In 2023, The WEST Journal has continued to explore, discover and share with you the wealth of beauty, the character and vibrancy of Western Sydney.

We again show you destinations ‘West of WEST’ and explore some of regional NSW which shares a unique and direct economic relationship with Greater Western Sydney.

Local tourism and exploring our own backyards has gained more and more popularity and the explosion of new venues, activities and places to visit and see continues to grow.

Above all, we want to share with you the quality of life to be found in Western Sydney and help drive the changing perception of what are proud communities with unique qualities and characters.

We launched The WEST Supper Club in late 2022 which brings together a variety of Sydney-based food media, influencers and writers to share with them our love of Western Sydney. We did this in collaboration with BIASED PR to help shine a light on one select venue in each Local Government Area that is doing something truly amazing. The response has been incredible with these venues gaining an enormous amount of promotion and exposure to new audiences and a Sydney-based audience who otherwise wouldn’t know about them. We were even fortunate enough to be asked by Sydney Radio 2GB to come along and have a chat with Deborah Knight about exploring Western Sydney.

Inspired by the very site it sits on, the built form holds an exceptional duality - it is bold in architectural expression yet grounded to the site by its materiality.

Primarily consisting of rammed earth, concrete, charred timber and glass; the darker toned materials allow the house to recede into the landscape, while the large glass openings are able to filter the golden light into internal spaces.

Golden Vale is an inspiring piece of architecture that has a lasting impact on all. The site, the people and the local community have been transformed by this project, becoming a memorable point of reference in Megalong Valley."

Doonside is a culturally diverse and vibrant suburb that sits on Dharug land. It is a great place to visit, with plenty of activities to do, history to explore, and delicacies to try.

Travel to Doonside by train and arrive in the heart of this residential area at the station.

Or, if you’re travelling by car, Doonside is just off the M4.

Doonside has a strong Filipino community as over 13 per cent of the population are of Filipino background. You can see their influence as you walk down the main street Hill End Road.

From bakeries to restaurants to grocery stores, Filipino people from all over Sydney travel here for the authentic businesses, and you can too.

Next, head next door to Sydney Zoo. Opened at the end of 2019, Sydney Zoo is a popular and large attraction with over 4 000 animals.

Containing no hills or stairs, the zoo is easily accessible for visitors of all abilities. Explore the five iconic precincts and spot animals including a rhino, lions, sharks, elephants, cheetahs, and plenty of native Australian animals.

The zoo also has a great and rich connection to country through its informative signage and integration of Aboriginal history, stories, and local language. This is a truly world-class zoo in the heart of Western Sydney.

Doonside is also home to another place of Indigenous cultural significance. Head to Nurragingy Reserve, which is on the site of the first ever land grant given to the Indigenous people of Australia. The reserve is named after Dharug man Nurragingy, who in 1819 was one of the two Indigenous men given this land. Explore

the reserve which features picnic areas, a playground, and Chinese gardens surrounded by bushland.

The Chang Lai Yuan Gardens were opened in 2012 and are part of the sister city partnership between Blacktown City and the Liaocheng municipality in China. The seven arch granite bridge spans over the lake and makes for an impressive photo.

It really is an unexpected surprise and a must-see.
