PRESTIGE IN THE WEST McGrath Camden

Houses are more than shelter; they give an area its unique identity. This is true for the Camden area, which, like many old towns throughout Western Sydney is filled with many heritage homes that ooze life and character – giving this South-Western Sydney suburb its distinct historic feel.

As a town dating back to the 1800s, Camden’s buildings retain the stories of their previous inhabitants over the centuries. Old homes that line Camden’s streets are often known by their former owners’ names and usage, and the era they were built. In a beautifully communal way, it is the locals who pass down to each other the history and stories of what these homes once were.

Menangle Road bends and twists above Camden’s town centre and is lined with some of the grandest homes that accentuate the area’s history.

One such home was recently sold

by McGrath Camden for an area record - local icon Dr Crookston’s House which sits at the start of Mengangle Road on the top of John Street.. Built in the late 19th century by wool industry pioneering family the Macarthurs, this stunning estate has taken on character and sentimentality as it has passed from owner to owner.

The much-loved house was bought by a local family who grew up in the area and had a long-held dream of owning it one day, becoming a part of its history in the process. It continues to sit proudly overlooking the town and will remain an important part of the area’s identity.

The previous sale record was another heritage home sold on Menangle Road by McGrath Camden. This home also had also been transformed to accentuate its period style in a contemporary way.

A few doors down, 43 Menangle Road has recently come onto the market and is another older styled home. Last sold in 2012, the owners have given the 90-year-old house an enormous and very stylish makeover.

Homes like this, from various periods and styles define the broader Camden area, bringing and sustaining its richness in heritage.

One of these is Mount Annan’s Alex Zucchi – who handmakes and sells leather products for his business Lighthouse Leather Co.

WEST came across Lighthouse Leather during one of our many explorations when we noticed some of his beautiful products on display.

We first met Alex by chance, over a great coffee at his brew bar in Wetherill Park. We sat down with him to find out more about his story.

“I started constantly making until it was at the point where I thought I could sell it.”

In 2019, Alex first began his journey as a leather crafter. As a selfproclaimed collector of hobbies, it was through watching YouTube videos about the art, that Alex first thought leather crafting was something he could pursue.

After buying a kit and converting the spare bedroom into a studio, Alex committed to practicing and learning the art of turning leather

“It doesn’t get boring, there’s so much variety in what I’m doing. There’s so much you can make out of leather.”

From this began Lighthouse Leather Co Named after his love for lighthouses, Alex started an online store selling Kangaroo bookmarks made from leather, which proved to be successful not only because hundreds were purchased, but because it gave Alex the motivation to continue his passion.

The colour, form, and composition elevate these functional products into pieces of art – without losing their useability. Sourcing his leather from Australia, Italy, Japan, and the USA, Alex is committed to using quality leather that fits the product he is producing.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from, people appreciate good craftsmanship,” says Alex, “good things can come from anywhere and Western Sydney has a massive population of very creative people who can do anything.”

This community of local makers and producers is something Alex believes is important in deepening the perception of places like Western Sydney. He says that local crafters represent the immediate area they are producing in.

“We need people to be creative and to produce things,” Alex says, “the more crafters you have in the area, the more it adds to the identity of the area.”

Western Sydney is host to many (and an ever-increasing number of) local producer markets and artisan stores where craftspeople like Alex represent their skill in the community. These spots are one of the best places to experience the vibrancy of Western Sydney, and support local businesses and makers.

Alex Zucchi is just one example of a hard-working local producer who is proud of his art, and proud of his community in Western Sydney, and he knows that when it comes to perfecting a craft, the journey is never over.

Alex told us that once you think you’ve made it, or you’ve learnt all you can – you’re no longer a success. There’s always so much more to learn. That kind of ethos drives quality and is why Lighthouse Leather products are sought out by sellers and retailers in Sydney bringing the West to them.

While exploring The Horsley Drive and Wetherill Park, we met Clarissa Di Pietrantonio from Goliath Coffee Roasters. We quickly became friends and she shared with us why she is so passionate about her Western Sydney.

“As a child, I woke up to the aroma of coffee every morning. As I grew older, it became my job to prepare the coffee after each meal while the ‘grown-ups’ would debrief about that day’s event in our local family business,” says Clarissa.

Growing up in an Italian household in Fairfield, coffee has always been a way of life for Clarissa. Yet it wasn’t only her family’s culture that she grew up with, as her area saw an influx of immigrants from different backgrounds over the decades.

“This whole conversation about diversity, it just happened in my backyard. It wasn’t something I had to go searching for. I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in an area where I can experience food, languages, and culture from almost anywhere in the world,” she says, “I found that coming from a family with a business, we got to meet with people from all parts of Sydney. You saw their appreciation for the West grow once they experienced it for themselves.”

This was the reality for Clarissa as she completed all her schooling and university in Western Sydney, eventually leaving the area for a career in publishing.

“Being born here and brought up in the West – I always felt like what I had in me, and what I had access to – completely informed everything I did in my career.”

For many, a quick getaway to the country is a muchneeded dose of relaxation amid a fast-paced life. Sitting on Wiradjuri land, Dubbo is an inland city with a thriving food, and culture scene that you need to add to your weekend-away list.

Less than 400 kilometres West of Sydney, you can take on the drive to Dubbo, or book a seat on the daily Central West XPT. We recommend spending at least two nights in Dubbo, because there is plenty to do here. We’ve put together some suggestions.

When it comes to coffee, Dubbo is well in the game. We love Press, Black Tambourine, Cacao House, and The Auctioneer. Each of these cafés brings a trendy atmosphere centred around enjoying good coffee and food together.

The Shoyoen Japanese Garden is one of the most authentic Japanese Gardens in Australia and was gifted to Dubbo by sister city Minokamo in Japan.

It is a beautifully designed space centring around a large pond. Jurian is the name of a ceremonial tea house featured in the garden, which was designed in Japan and specially shipped to Dubbo. This tranquil and well-kept garden is perfect for a springtime stroll.

The Wiradjuri Garden was opened in June 2021 and was worked on by Indigenous community groups. Designed to represent the three large rivers of the area and the rainbow serpent, this garden is a beautiful place of cultural significance.

Dubbo has a great array of dinner options sure to suit any group. If you enjoy craft beer, Devil’s Hollow Brewery in East Dubbo serves their local brews on tap each named after something out of Dubbo’s folklore. They also serve great pub food, to satisfy any schnitty hankering you may have. If you can’t get enough of their beer, try a brewery tour and tasting, for the full craft experience.

A local institution, The Royal India Restobar is regal styled restaurant known for its authentic Indian food. It’s a favourite among locals, and with its impressively golden interior and exterior, there’s no way you’ll miss it on the street.

Dubbo is well known for Taronga Western Plains Zoo, and we’ve saved this great attraction for the second day. Of course, there’s so much other than the zoo to see and do in Dubbo, but if you’ve never been before, you don’t want to miss it.

A ten-minute drive away is the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience. Opened in 2019, this state-of-the-art centre is decked out with high quality augmented reality technology, interactive maps, and a full-sized plane previously used by the RFDS. Learn all about the incredible work the service does to provide for the health needs of remote communities.

Not only is the experience centre incredible, but the Outback Trek Café is also outstanding, with all the profits donated back into the RFDS. Enjoy lunch, and a rummage through their extensive gift store – knowing that all your contributions go towards enabling this important service.

Dubbo

The best thing about the zoo is that you can do the 5km loop on foot, in your car, in a buggy or on a bike. This means, no matter what, you see the animals at your own pace. Enjoy the huge enclosures with many African animals and get up close in their safari truck experience. You could easily spend half a day here at the zoo.

Although tickets can be purchased individually, if you’re interested in visiting the three attractions we mentioned, we recommend the Great Big Adventure Pass, which gives you unlimited access to the Zoo, RFDS, Gaol, and Wellington Caves.

Carrington is a charming little suburb in the City of Newcastle Carrington

Formerly known as Chapman and Bullock Island, Carrington was used by the traditional owners for mud crab and oyster fishing. European settlers reshaped the island in the early 1800s, which at the time sank below high tide, with ballast and reclamation work to create the land we see today.
