Enjoy Two Great Gap Rotary Christmas Events The two events which are organised by the Rotary Club of Ashgrove The Gap are the Santa Sleigh 3-9 December and Carols

by Candlelight 10 December Santa and his helpers will be cruising the streets of The Gap on his sleigh from 6.00pm to 8.30pm each night from 3rd to 9th December, and then enjoy Carols by Candlelight in Dorrington Park, Mirrabooka Road, Ashgrove on Saturday 10 December.

Santa Sleigh

The Sleigh won’t be able to cover every street, so from 7.00-7.30pm, Monday 5th December, Santa and his Sleigh will park on the Payne Road service road at the corner of Hawthorn Street. Come and see him there, or just listen for the Christmas music and find Santa on his run!

Carols by Candlelight

Enjoy Carols by Candlelight in Dorrington Park, Mirrabooka Road, Ashgrove on Saturday 10 December.

Come early, music begins around 5.00pm, bring your own hamper, and enjoy your own picnic, or food and drinks will be available from the Norths Hockey Club. (Note: Mirrabooka Bridge on Girraween Grove has been reopened) Jenny Woodward, Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV and radio presenter, will again compere.

This event is presented by the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap with funding assistance from the Brisbane City Council Festival Fund and the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Program through Andrew Wines, Councillor for Enoggera.

After a night of singing some favourite carols.

Ace Fireworks will climax the evening with a dazzling fireworks display around 7.45pm.

Ward Happenings with Councillor Steven Toomey Cr Toomey can be contacted at The Gap Ward Office on Phone: 3407 1900 The Gap Stomp Remembrance Day holds a special significance in our Country’s short history. On this day we pause for one minute to remember the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. More than 60,000 men never came home and over 156,000 were wounded or gassed. For a young country of less than five million this was a significant loss felt by the entire nation. In the 98 years since the armistice the meaning of pausing in silence to remember those who have fallen from WW1 to all of our service personal in conflicts near and far.

This year the inaugural The Gap/ Ashgrove Stomp was held to commemorate Armistice Day with a hike from ANZAC Square in the City to The Gap Memorial in Walton Bridge Reserve.

Over fifty hikers from all walks of life, including ex and current servicemen stood in silence at the base of Epitaph to observe Australia’s loss in all conflicts, before making the twelve kilometre hike along Enoggera Creek to The Gap. Funds raised from the hike go towards Whiskey’s Wish, a non-for-profit that provides service dogs to first responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Christmas in The Grove 2016 This year marks the 10th anniversary of this free event for our local community.

Hosted by The Grove Baptist

Community Church since 2007, the Carols by Candlelight program will begin at 7pm with carol singing, a visit from Santa and culminating with a fireworks display.

I am looking forward to attending this event and look forward to seeing you all there.

The Year That Was 2016 I am extremely honoured to have been elected as your local councillor in the March 2016 elections.

I have enjoyed attending the meetings of all the organisations, particularly the P&C’s, P&F’s community group meetings, working bees and in some case your

homes. I would like to thank the hundreds of people who volunteer their time to the schools, sporting clubs, historical societies, seniors groups and environmental groups. Without your support in our community The Gap ward would not the best place to live in Brisbane.

Next year there is more work to be done. In particular work will continue to finalise two neighbourhood plans for the area. Operation works will begin on many deliverables for the Ward and I am excited to be discussing them with you in the coming year.

Christmas is the time of year we get together with family and friends to celebrate what is dear to us. We are all looking forward to the break over Christmas and the office will be closed from Thursday 22 December 2016 until Monday 9 January 2017.

On behalf of The Gap Ward team I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and very happy 2017.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Success

Congratulations Graduates

Students across the Ashgrove Electorate have been taking part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge in recent months, learning a love of reading for life.

This year’s Challenge broke records with more than 2.24 million books read across Queensland, 42,772 of those right here in our community.

Ashgrove State School students made a great contribution to the total, reading 20,702 books as part of the challenge. Budding readers at Enoggera State School read 1,665; Hilder Road State School read 905; Mitchelton State High School read 200; Mitchelton State School read 1,662; Newmarket State School read 4,560; Payne Road State School read 1,165; St Peter Chanel Primary read 9,134; and The Gap State School read 2,779.

Well done to all the students who took part, I hope you learned a lot and got to read some great stories.

As the school year draws to a close, graduation ceremonies, Christmas concerts and end-of-year celebrations are in full swing at our local schools.

For Year Six students this will be a particularly exciting, and a little nerve wracking, time as they finish primary school. Moving into high school is a big step but the great education they’ve had at our local primary schools will no doubt set them up for the challenges ahead.

Our Year 12s are also heading into a new chapter in their lives, moving on to university, training, or into the workforce. The Queensland Government is this year running the #ipledgeqld campaign to keep young people safe as they head to Schoolies. #ipledgeqld encourages Schoolies to take a stand against violence and asks them to ‘Walk Away, Chill Out’.

Congratulations to all our local graduates on your hard work. I hope all our teachers, students and their families have a relaxing and safe school holidays.

Christmas Hamper Donations This is a great time of year to be thinking of others and our community has always been so generous toward those doing it tough. This year my office will be collecting non-perishable foods to include in Micah Projects’ Christmas hampers, for families in need of a little help this festive season. Items such as Christmas cakes, long-life custard, and tinned ham can make Christmas just a little bit brighter for people who might otherwise go without. Please drop your donations into my office by December 16 so we can ensure they get to those in need in time for Christmas.

Federal Update Happy, Safe & Healthy Holiday Season As the end of the year approaches I would like to wish everyone in the Ryan electorate a happy, healthy and safe Christmas season.

Heading into the warmer months, please remember to be safe around pools and waterways. Always watch out for your children, wear a life jacket and learn life-saving skills.

It is also important to prepare for bushfire and storm season. Keep up to date at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov. au/community/communitysafety/disasters-emergencies/ be-prepared.

If you are going away these holidays it is important to make sure you are informed and prepared for any situation.

It is also very important make sure you have not just travel insurance, but the appropriate cover for your circumstances.

More than half of young people travelling believe the government will help them get home in the event of a medical emergency and this is NOT CORRECT. Having the right travel insurance for your holiday is vital to ensuring you are looked after should anything happen to you. Before you go away visit the Smart Traveller website at www.smartraveller.gov. au to get all the information you need to be informed and prepared.

I would like to wish those students who have recently graduated Year 12 all the best for their future endeavours, whether it be in employment, university or travel. If you are still unsure about which direction you will take next

Grants available to support volunteers in Ryan Vo l u n t e e r s a r e t h e backbone of our community

and we have many dedicated groups in the Ryan electorate who go above and beyond for others. The Volunteer Grants 2016 recognise these groups by providing funding of up to $5000 to assist the work of their volunteers.

These grants can be used by organisations for anything that helps with costs incurred by their volunteers, such as first aid training, background security checks

or transport for volunteers who may have a disability.

Community organisations can also purchase much-needed equipment, such as iPads or printers, so they can keep pace with technology.

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Ryan Christmas Card Competition this year and thank you to the community judging panel who had the difficult task of choosing just a few winners from so many wonderful entries!

Another grant which I would like to bring to the attention of parents and young people is the Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions Grant.

These grants of $500 are available for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 who are travelling more than 250 kilometres to participate in a sporting competition.

The first run of 100 copies has already sold out, but the next will be available at our 2 Christmas stalls and displays outside Woolworths, Ashgrove. The first is on Thursday December 1, the second on Friday December 16. At $25 a copy, the booklet makes an excellent gift or addition to one’s library. As some local schools have bought class copies, other groups or schools may also be interested. Morning tea follows. Carolin Klinger from the Heritage Council Queensland will talk about the role of the council and aspects of heritage laws as they affect property, housing development and heritage protection. This is a most interesting topic, especially in a suburb like Ashgrove where some residential and commercial properties have historical and cultural significance. Visitors are most welcome.

The Gap Sub-Branch RSL The inaugural The Gap/Ashgrove Stomp, from Anzac Square to the Walton Bridge Reserve was completed by 55 walkers on Sunday 6th November, following the Stomp many walkers placed commemorative bricks around the Walton Bridge Memorial, which were left in place for Remembrance Day. Once again we thank The Gap Football Club for the use of the club for the breakfast following The Stomp and our sponsors, Ritual HQ, Alex Gow Funerals and Hollingworth & Spencer Lawyers.

The Stomp will be held again next year on Sunday 13th August 2017, save the date!

The Remembrance Day service at the Walton Bridge Reserve saw the largest attendance in recent years, with many joining us at The Gap Football Club for morning tea prepared by Margaret Gibbons and served by our members. This year a group of soldiers from 2/14 QMI (LH) attended the service in addition to the Catafalque party, our thanks go to the Commanding Officer and soldiers of 2/14 QMI (LH) and 2 General Health Battalion for their support again this year.

We also thank Pastor Garry Rucci of the Rivercity Church for his delivery of the Prayer of Remembrance and Benediction, while the Bugle calls of Sergeant Mark Nettle of the Queensland Police Service and piping by Mr Gary Forno QC were a significant contribution to the ceremony.

We also acknowledge Cr Steven Toomey for his support of both The Stomp and Remembrance Day activities, his attendance at the morning tea after the ceremony presented a great opportunity for our members and others in attendance to meet with him and discuss matters of importance. The Sub-branch also acknowledges the assistance of management of The Gap Village Shopping Centre for making space available for our sale of poppies, badges and other memorabilia, Meixner’s Quality Meats and Sports F1rst for their contributions.

The next meeting for members of the Sub-branch is at 4.30pm on Friday 9th December 2016.

A small dedicated group of Members have put in many hours in promoting a display of some of the Society’s activities during the month of November at The Gap Village Shopping Centre.

Thanks is extended to those who visited and supported The Gap Historical Society during the display. Altering photographs on display was one way of ensuring interest was maintained with winners of the raffle notified and listed on the notice board.

With it’s annual Christmas Party held at the Arana Leagues Club on Saturday 3 December, apart from great company and a historical quiz, highlights of the event included the awarding of Life Membership to Foundation Members Bob and Julie Rowe, Jan Healion and Beryl Hogan for their 16 years of great support to the Society. November being what it is, no-one is surprised that the Probus Club had a Melbourne Cup lunch, and no-one is surprised that all those there enjoyed it – win, lose or draw. The Gap Tavern did us proud.

At our regular monthly meeting the following week our guest speaker was Margaret Bruce, who with her husband had given up a quiet life on the Sunshine Coast and taken herself off to a strange city in central China, to teach English. As practically the only westerners in a city of nearly five million, Margaret and her husband had a lot of adjusting to do: everything was new from the shopping, the accommodation, the teaching and even the way they were paid.

We listened fascinated to this brave woman and her stories – as of the time her middle-aged husband and a young female guide went to a pharmacy for headache pills: as soon as the assistant saw the two of them she offered Viagra before a word had been spoken!

Besides the general meetings and the outings we also go to bowls carnivals, organise theatre block bookings (with a discount, therefore!), have dine-outs, run a book group, have coffee mornings, keep track of members’ welfare and in general seek to have “an active retirement” and keep the brain active.

We have room for more members, so if you are interested in joining, or just having a look, we would welcome your enquiry – simply call our secretary Rhoda on 3312 2283. Apart from the outings and trips and special occasions we meet at 2pm on the first Thursday of every month, at The Gap Baptist Church, by the traffic lights at the junction of Waterworks and Settlement Roads – handy to lots of buses, and with some spaces for car parks. Finding your family: a beginners course in research The Queensland Family History Society (QFHS) is offering a beginners course in family history research early in 2017. The six-week course is designed to involve participants in the process of sound genealogical research and to teach the most up-to-date methods of family history searching using a variety of resources.

All participants will have the opportunity to use all the resources at the QFHS Library and Resource Centre. This means that any non-members who enrol in the course will have complimentary use of the Library for the duration of the course.

In addition, everyone who enrols in the course will receive a copy of Shauna Hicks’s recent book Where do I start?: a brief guide to researching your family in Australia and New Zealand.

The course will be based around this publication and it will provide a handy reference guide.

This course offers beginners a chance to find out what is available in the field of family history research, as it is not a case of just typing in your name and letting the computer or subscription website do the rest.

The course will be held at the QFHS Library and Resource Centre, 58 Bellevue Avenue, Gaythorne, beginning at 7.30 pm on Monday 13 February 2017. The cost, including the booklet, is $50 for QFHS members and $70 for non-members. You can book and pay online at www.qfhs.org.au under the Events tab.

Serenata Singers Seek New Members The Serenata Singers are seeking new members - Sopranos, altos, basses and especially tenors. Emergency?

Anyone who has ever pulled out a credit card at the emergency clinic for something that wasn’t as dire as it seemed comes away wishing for a better knowledge of what constitutes an urgent situation -- and what doesn’t. But as big an “ouch” as a non-emergency can be to the budget, it’s a lot better than the opposite situation: an emergency that goes untreated until it’s too late for your pet.

But how can you tell? The signs of a healthy pet are pretty apparent to an observant pet owner: bright, clear eyes with no sign of discharge; clean ears, free of build up or smell; a mouth not overpowering by its odour, with pink gums free of infection; a nose that appears moist, with no discharge; a shiny coat, with unblemished skin below that snaps back easily when pulled away from the shoulders. A healthy attitude, with normal appetite and thirst are part of the package, too, without signs of intestinal upset. No lameness, no swelling. No lumps, no bumps. No heavy panting.

Anything to the contrary is reason to have a pet checked. But is it a “go to the veterinarian this very minute” emergency?

The “see the vet now” indicators include seizure, fainting or collapse, as well as any suspected poisoning (including rodent poison, snail bait or human medication). Snake or tick bites, too, demand immediate attention. Cats in particular can be fatally sensitive to insecticides (such as flea-control medications that are safe for dogs), petroleum-based products and common human medications.

Sometimes situations that might not seem urgent really are, such as eye injuries or allergic reactions -- swelling around the face or hives. A single incident of vomiting or diarrhoea is probably nothing, but anything more than two or three times within an hour or so could indicate a serious problem. Other signs of possible serious conditions are breathing problems, chronic coughing or difficulties urinating or defecating, the latter especially in cats.

Animals can sometimes seem fine after accidents, such as being hit by a car, exposed to extreme heat, or bitten. Even if your pet looks OK, you need to take him to a veterinarian to check for internal injuries that can kill if left untreated.

There are also situations that may not be life-threatening but are certainly painful enough to warrant immediate veterinary attention. Some of the signs of an animal in pain include panting, laboured breathing, lethargy or restlessness, loss of appetite, aggression, hiding, or crying out. While it may be possible to wait until your regular veterinarian is available, put yourself in your pet’s place. Don’t let your pet suffer!

When in doubt, call your veterinarian. It’s better to make a trip you needn’t have made than to miss the one you should have made.

New Mirrabooka Bridge opens to traffic A major upgrade of an integral Ashgrove Bridge is now complete, delivering a stronger, sturdier structure for local residents.

Field Services Chairman Peter Matic said the $5.5 million upgrade of the Mirrabooka Road Bridge was now open to traffic, following a complete reconstruction of the bridge.

“The old Mirrabooka Road Bridge was originally designed

in 1942 and had a weight limit of 22.5 tonnes,” Cr Matic said.

“This $5.5 million upgrade has delivered a much stronger and sturdier bridge, which means the previous load limit no longer applies, providing access to vehicles and loads of all sizes.

“The lane widths have also been increased on the new bridge to bring the load limit in line with other bridges across the city, as well as Field Services Chairman Peter Matic, Councillors Steven Toomey and Andrew Wines at the opening of Mirrabooka Bridge

“The new design includes two on-road bicycle lanes, encouraging more residents to get out and about and enjoy active travel in their local community.

“This project has also delivered a new pedestrian walkway, new kerb and footpath ramps, upgraded traffic islands and landscaping.”

Local Councillor Andrew Wines said the project was a win for the local community, and will ensure the road network can cater to current and future demand.

“This is an important connection in our local community and this project will ensure the longevity of the bridge which has served the community for around 70 years,” Cr Wines said.

“The bridge has been

closed off since January to allow for this major project to take place, which included lifting 72 deck units, each weighing seven tonne, into place.

“Some ongoing works such as landscaping are required to be undertaken and are expected to be completed in early 2017.

“I thank the community for its patience as Council completed this vital project.”

Motorists and cyclists should also be aware that there is now a Stop sign and No Right Hand Turn from Acacia Avenue into Girraween Grove (for traffic wanting to travel northbound towards Frasers Road) as well as a Stop sign on the Moola Road intersection with Girraween Grove.

The Bardon-based Voices of Birralee has opened enrolments for 2017, with lots of exciting opportunities for young people, aged five – 30 to sing with the highly acclaimed choral organisation.

The angel of the Lord told Joseph that his betrothed, the virgin Mary, would bear a child and that he would be called Immanuel which means “God with us.” The world is as troubled now as it was when Christ was born 2,000 years ago. It was a brutal world filled with corruption and the abuse of the powerful over the weak. Christmas is a time to celebrate that God was willing to be born a human being, to set about overcoming evil with good. Christ did not come with a sword; instead he healed the sick. He did not walk the halls of parliament but taught in the backwaters, making wise the simple. He did not live a life of luxury but instead only had one garment to his name.

Christmas reminds me that God cares about broken people and the brokenness of our world. So much so that he gave his only son (Jesus) to save all those who would trust him. Immanuel means that God came and he is still with us. He cares for you.

He would overcome evil with good. Have you been hurt? Ask Christ to bring healing in your life. Have you brought hurt to those you care about? Ask Christ to help you be reconciled, to bring healing to those you have hurt. This Christmas is an opportunity not to be overcome by evil but to overcome evil with good. Jesus Christ came and overcame evil with good. In weakness he vanquished the strong; in defeat he won the greatest victory; in his death he won for us eternal life. I encourage you to put your trust in Christ and ask him to help you do good this Christmas among your family, friends and community. As time goes by is the theme of our 2017 calendar; as a long term resident of Enoggera and districts as you peruse it, surely you must remember this. Each month brings back a memory evergreen of what used to be coupled with a view of what it looks like now. Gaythorne RSL, Enoggera Memorial Hall, Brookside Shopping Centre, Mitchelton State School, trams in the streets; the memories are all there to see. I am intrigued by the young couple strolling in the middle of 1950s Blackwood Road: Who were they and where are they now? Would they try walking down the middle of 2016 Blackwood Street?

The calendar will be on sale at Brookside SC and RSL Gaythorne and also at the society’s library in the Enoggera Memorial Hall on the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, where it will be available on Thursday mornings up to December 8; cost $10 plus $2.50 postage.

700 grasses planted on Fish Creek bank The local community rallied to save Fish Creek by planting more than 700 native grasses, rushes and sedges along the creek bank at Glenella Park on Saturday 19 November.

One of Australia’s bestpreserved urban creeks, Fish Creek is under pressure from erosion caused by the stormwater which runs off our roofs and yards.

Huge volumes of stormwater have been eroding the creek banks already damaged in years gone by cattle grazing to the water’s edge.

Remedial work had already been carried out by Brisbane City Council on a 30-metre section of the creek. With this additional planting by 40 enthusiastic locals, the creek bank is well on the way to recovery.

The volunteers were also lucky to have a nature walk and a presentation of native

animals by wildlife expert Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife.

The live animals on display were all reptiles and most of the species live locally along our creeks.

The reptiles included a Long-necked Turtle, Saws h e l l e d Tu r t l e , L e g l e s s L i z a r d s , E a s t e r n Wa t e r Dragon, Bearded Dragon, Pink-tongued Lizards, Green Tree Snake and a huge Carpet Python called Shag Pile.

The most unusual animal on display was a Pygmy Crocodile which is found in the Northern Territory. These tiny but clever crocs have learnt to avoid being poisoned by cane toads by only eating the hind legs.

Another unusual animal on display was the Yellow-spotted Monitor. This lizard is usually found further inland but seems to be migrating to the urban fringes of Brisbane. It can grow to about one and a half

The Physiologix Corner Ankle sprains… Not so simple

Ankle sprains are one of the most common lower limb injuries in sports. There is no such thing as a simple ankle sprain however only 55% of patients seek medical treatment for an ankle sprain. Many people underestimate the severity of the injury which may lead to persistent symptoms, recurrent ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability (CAI). CAI encompasses multiple insufficiencies that have occurred due to inadequate rehabilitation of the ankle. The ankle can become weak, feel unstable or stiff and cause difficulty balancing or walking/ running on unstable surfaces. In sports is can begin to affect performance with less ankle stability and decreased ability to perform changes of direction or cutting manoeuvres. It can also affect confidence levels and certain movements or sports may be avoided due to a fear of re-injury.

The good news is that if rehabilitated well the risk of re-injury and CAI decreases. A good rehabilitation program is split into 5 phases below and progressed as the injury heals: Initial Phase: This stage begins from the time of ankle sprain to around 3-4 days post injury. This is the time where the injured tissue requires protection. The RICE principle is followed in this phase along with taping and or bracing.

Intermediate Phase: This stage can last from a few days to a few weeks. Gait retraining and exercises including stretching, balance, strength and endurance are the focus. Your physio will also advise you on the best way to maintain fitness levels throughout your rehab.

Advanced Phase: This stage can continue up to 4-6 weeks depending on the severity of the injury. Exercises become more advanced along with the inclusion of jumping and landing drills, running, hopping and change of direction.

Return to Sport Phase: Sport specific movements and activities will be integrated into the exercise program with a gradual progression back to trainings and sport. Your physio will test multiple functional movements to make sure you are fit for return to sport. An ankle brace may be recommended for return to play depending on your ankle history and severity of injury.

Injury Prevention and Monitoring Phase: Once back into sport it is important to continue to work on exercises to help prevent recurrent sprains. Fitness and performance testing can be carried to track progress over time so you can see you are making positive changes with your exercise program.

Overall ankle sprains are a complex injury that require a thorough rehabilitation plan. It is important seek treatment from a physiotherapist as soon as possible to get started on an individualised exercise program. Over the last month we have brought our classroom learning to a close for another year and I wish to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff of Hilder Road State School for making learning alive in each classroom. It takes all members of our school community to really bring a well-rounded education to all of our students.

I would also like to thank the fantastic Environment sub-committee of the P&C for their tireless work on our Fish Creek Project. We were State Finalists at the DET Showcase Awards this year in the Community Engagement category – a great testament to the wonderful community spirit that permeates Hilder Road SS. The volunteer work they have contributed has been enormous and greatly appreciated. Last month saw our annual Volunteers Morning Tea well attended again. It is a time when teachers thank all of the members of our

community who go out of their way to come and lend a hand at our school. Some people bake, others help in classrooms, some do tuckshop or uniform shop and others still volunteer at planting days.

Other groups get together and organise special events like Trivia night, the Art and Well Being week, the Chaplaincy Car boot sale and the Year 6 Graduation. It really doesn’t matter how our community helps us, we want to thanks them form the bottom of our hearts – it really does make a difference.

We have had a delightful time welcoming our 2017 Preps to Transition days in November. They seem so ready for school. What a great job the parents and preprep providers have done in preparing them all for school – they only have to wait for 4 weeks after Christmas and they will be at school!

Every day is busy, every week is busy, every month is busy and November and December are no different. We still have our Year 5 Student Elections, Senior Swimming Carnival, the Christmas Stall, Carols in the Cow Paddock, Graduation and our Final Assembly to look forward to over the coming weeks! I wish our students, staff and school community a peaceful and relaxing break over summer and a safe and happy holiday.

Our senior leaders made farewell speeches and the school was able to officially thank them and wish them every success in their future careers and endeavours. In a school setting, this time of the year is a time for both planning for the year ahead and reflecting back over the year that has been.

Students have been involved in a number of final performances for the year and an information evening for prospective 2017 Year 7 students, as well as preparation for the allimportant end of year exams.

The end of year Instrumental Music Concert took place on Tuesday 8th November.

Students received ribbons and medals as recognition of their accomplishments and commitment to our music program.

The joy of singing was celebrated on Wednesday 16th November at the Ashgrove Baptist Church.

The Sopraninos along with the Junior, Senior and Boys’ Choir performed at this end of year concert. Thank you to all our music teachers and parent support group for their unrelenting commitment to our school’s music program.

Students’ academic achievement will be acknowledge at the Academic Aw a r d s A s s e m b l y o n Wednesday 30th November at 2pm. At this assembly, the School Captains for 2017 will be announced.

Graduation Ceremony for the graduating class of 2016 will be held on Tuesday 6th December. Most importantly, they often provided admirable examples of The Gap State School’s values in action. We say farewell to two long term The Gap State School teachers. Mr Rob Kolomoteitz has taught for 37 years with 26 years at our school. Mr K is well known and much

loved in our school and our community. Throughout his time at our school Mr K has trained and coached countless students in a range of sports with many of his students progressing to regional and state level. Mr K’s passion and commitment to state school sport has been greatly appreciated and will be dearly missed. Mrs Anne O’Reegan has taught for 38 years and has been our music teacher at The Gap State School for 13 years. Over these years Mrs O’Reegan has co-ordinated the music program and played a key role in the development of our elite music programs. Mrs O’Reegan’s love of music and performance has brought joy to our school community and we will miss her enthusiasm for all things music.

The Probus Club of Mitchelton Inc.

The end of the year is fast approaching which I find quite amazing. Our Guest Speaker for last month, Annette Henderson, has expressed a desire to return to our Club to talk about her second book. She was a very interesting speaker so she is most welcome to return, a good start for our li9st for next year.

We are going to be entertained this month, November, by Terry and Ros, two great artists and I know we will have a really good morning with them. On an entirely different note, also in November, we went to Victoria Barracks to view their display on the Battle of Fromelles, (19-20 July, 2016) which has been described as the worst 24 hours in Australian military history.

In a single night and day of fighting, 5.533 Australian soldiers, who had arrived in France only a few days earlier, were dead, wounded or taken prisoner. It was one of the AIF’s first actions on the Western Front in World War I. This British Australian action was intended to divert the enemy’s attention from the vital Battle of the Somme, which had begun to the South on July 1, and to prevent the enemy from sending reinforcements. Although they were initially successful, the Germans counter attack was too prepared and too strong and so the carnage happened.

This display has been running at Victoria Barracks since July and finishes on 7th December. It was certainly well worth seeing and a reminder of the horrors experienced in World War I. A tour of the Barracks was included in the visit, with some of the buildings going back to the very early settlement of Brisbane.

It was a very interesting morning and one I personally, was glad to have undertaken.

Apparently the Barracks are being ‘eyed’ for redevelopment.

What a shame that would be as we do not have as much heritage areas in Brisbane as we should have.

Ashgrove/The Gap Men’s Shed A new roof on the Shed should be a reality when this edition goes to press.

Council has provided several improvements this year enjoyed by all users of the community facilities at Yoorala Street.

An assessment inspection to result in a compliant access for Shed members with mobility issues was scheduled for 23 November.

Not too many Sheds have published authors in their ranks. We have both Allan Barbeler with his crime thriller “Absence of Discretion” and David Earley with his helicopter pilot memoir “Beneath Blades”.

The Shed Book discussion group focus this year has been on Australian authors. It is unusual to have the author of a book present to answer questions about characters and plot but this month we are doing just that with Alan and “Absence of Discretion”.

Speakers for the month included Clytie Binder from the Brisbane City Council on composting and worm farms.

Having a former film reviewer in the Shed means occasional opportunities to view advance screenings of award winning films. This month a small group went to see “I, Daniel Blake”.

Walks, cards, Pétanque, Tai Chi, toy repair, discussion groups, social club and woodwork all continue to be well supported. A relatively small group has been doing longer, more demanding bushwalks for several months now. Walking in the heat at this time of year requires extra planning and earlier starts.

The formula of good company with good food at our BBQs has been extended to the Tuesday morning break with quite a boost to numbers.

NATIVE FERNS

There are over 400 different types of Australian ferns.

They exhibit a tremendous variety of forms and great diversity of habitat. Most garden ferns, however, prefer a soil containing plenty of organic material that is kept moist during dry periods and where they receive filtered or morning sunlight. Heavy

mulching around the plants keeps the roots cool and reduces evaporation. Regular light applications of fertilizer such as blood and bone ensure good growth.

The Gap Chess Club Allegro (rapid chess) tournament is nearing completion, and at present Cameron De Vere and Joshua Morris are leading with 15 points from 18 games played, with Tony Morris ½ point in arrears. Following the completion of this tournament social games will be the order of play at the club until the year’s end. The club will open again in mid-January 2017.

The Marcus Porter Memorial attracted a field of 39 players, a great tribute to Marcus reflecting the enduring respect everyone in the Queensland chess community has for him. The runaway winner was Brodie McClymont who repeated Moulthyn Ly’s performance in this tournament last year, by winning all eight of his games. Khush Patel and Jasper Moss won rating prizes. Tom Maguire, who came second in the tournament won a special prize for the best performance playing the “Grob” opening.

Slender Brake

ferns (Platycerium sp.), the smaller ferns do not always attract as much attention. All ferns create a peaceful, cool ambience to any garden.

The hen and chicken fern (Aspenium bulbiferum) has lacey, pendulous fronds to 1-metre-long that makes it an attractive hanging basket plant. Being an epiphyte, it is a great feature plant growing, for example, on a log near a water feature. As its name suggests, the parent fern (hen) produces plantlets (chicken) along its fronds which can be removed and grown as new plants.

Another attractive epiphyte is the hare’s foot fern (Davellia pyxidata). Its scaly, brown

rhizome (which gives it its common name) normally clings to rocks and trees. The glossy green fronds of this fern also grow to about a metre long.

The trim shield fern (Lastreopsis decomposita) is a ground species that has dull green, tapering fronds emerging from a short rhizome and does well in rockeries.

The slender brake (Pteris ensiformis) is a neat, compact ground species, growing to 30cm with variegated silver and green fronds. With fronds only slightly longer, the jungle brake (Pteris umbrosa) is deep green with ribbon-like leaflets.

Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap Citizenship Ceremony at The Gap State High The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap will host its 23rd Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on Thursday 26 January, 2017, at The Gap State High School, commencing at 8:00am.

Applicants from many different countries will adopt Australian citizenship during the morning under the guidance of presiding officer Councillor Steven Toomey. It could be the largest number that the Rotary Club has ever catered for at their annual communityfocused Citizenship Ceremony.

Candidates pledge allegiance, and then as new citizens are enrolled on the electoral roll so that they can vote in future elections, exercising the democracy to which they have just committed themselves.

The Department of Immigration and Border Control will be issuing invitations very shortly, and soon we will find out the

mix of candidates. Countries represented in past years have included China, France, Germany, India, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, The Philippines, The Russian Federation, South Africa, Sudan, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

There will be representatives from all three levels of government in Australia: Federal, State and Local. A flag ceremony will

be held, with representatives from local schools making up the flag party. The Royal Bounty Bush Band have again been invited to provide Australian entertainment for the citizenship ceremony.

There will also be a morning tea for candidates, officials, helpers and friends.

The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap was the first Rotary club in Australia

to host an Australia Day Citizenship ceremony, back in 1995. For several years the ever-growing event has taken place at the J.A. Robertson Hall at The Gap State School hall, which affords shelter and shade in the event of inclement or blisteringly hot weather.

Reflections...2016 in Review

by Richard Speechley December is almost upon us with schools and places of education closed or about to close for the Christmas break with mums and dads planning for holidays or Christmas breaks.

Time to review my year’s contribution to Reflections and what better way to start than February 2016 where we paid tribute to our local retiring Ward Councillor Geraldine Knapp, who spent 18 years providing service to her local Ward in a most diligent manner. During the years Geraldine gave much time and assistance to all local groups and residents. As a Victorian, she was to become a well-respected Queenslander!

March was to bring me a slight health hiccup and not be able to complete Geraldine’s story. So, with ANZAC Day coming up in April, I reverted back to a “Lest We Forget” article published first in 2006 and acted as a reminder of the early days of services held on ANZAC Day here in The Gap. Back on deck, as it’s said, and up and about again, the April Reflections

was to complete the story of Geraldine Knapp, listing just some of her appointments and commitments during her 18 years in Council and her part played here in our suburb during and after the Microblast of Sunday 16 November 2008.

During May my mind drifted back to where my push-bike took me, which gradually evolved into a four month series of Reflections covering memories as I rode from Ashgrove West home to Bennett Road, Bennett Road to Walton Bridge, Walton Bridge to Settlement Road, then from there to the Enoggera Reservoir.

Some interesting phone calls and conversations made these articles a good talking point with some folk telling me it took them back to their past.

It also reminded me of the days when I could push up over Red Hill as I went to work at West End via the Grey Street Bridge or biking up Coopers Camp Road via Bardon down through Toowong to the Regatta Hotel where a ferry boat took me and the bike for

a three penny ride across to West End. On other occasions, when I and three mates spent a weekend on a Friday night ride to the coast and catching the train back to Brisbane on the Sunday afternoon, when trains left from Coolangatta or Southport.

Wi t h t h e E n o g g e r a Reservoir celebrating its 150th year since opening in August 1866 and SEQ Water providing a great day of entertainment, the September Reflections republished an article I had previously written and which highlighted again the wonderful aerial shot taken by the late Don Carnegie taken as a passenger in an Avro Anson plane not long after returning home from WWII after spending years as a POW in Changi.

Council will shortly be carrying out an upgrade to the Walton Bridge Reserve which includes the relocation of the toilet block along with the historical mural designed by artist Jamie McLean in 2005 and painted with the help of Grade 7 students of The Gap State School. I understand that some new form of technology will be used to ensure this very significant mural will still be seen at the new site. The October Reflections detailed the historical meaning of the mural.

The November Reflections touched on just some of the many hobbies undertaken by nimble fingered folk who knitted of an evening or were occupied in making family clothing and toys. Only the clever could turn a heel on four needles. Many in the organisation known as The Gap Willing War Workers in WWII were experts in this regard.

On a personal note, born in September of 1932, another milestone year has just passed.

The October issue marked 19 years since the Reflections articles began appearing in The Western Echo. October 6th saw my wife Pat and I celebrating 60 years of marriage. We married in the Albert Street Methodist Church all those years ago, to be greeted by a ‘guard of honour’ comprised of cubs and scouts of the local group formed in 1951.

December 6th marks 19 years since my kidney transplant at Princess Alexandra Hospital and am looking forward to a visit from my donors mother and father who hail from Perth and at present on a caravan holiday to the eastern states.

Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club Inc.

Although it’s still 2016, information about the first 2017 Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meeting is given this month because that meeting is on Thursday, 2nd February, 2017, and the first 2017 issue of this publication will not be in circulation by then.

The guest speaker will be Harry McKinnon, Senior Officer, Stafford - Wavell Heights Section of Home Assist Secure, and his topic will cover security for you and your home. These days we have to take precautions to make our homes safe and secure.

ACRO Home Maintenance (incorporating Stafford Home Assist) provides quality home maintenance and modifications for eligible clients aged 60+, people with a disability of any age and those with carers who wish to remain living independently at home.

Keep a check on potted plants and hanging baskets to make sure they don’t dry out. Some may require daily watering. Don’t allow fruit that drops from your fruit trees or vegetables to remain on the ground as this encourages pests and diseases. Promptly pick up the fruit and seal it in a black plastic bag which may be left in the sun to scorch its contents before it is placed in the garbage bin.

The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. meets on the first Thursday morning of the calendar month (except January) at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, 349 Wardell Street, Enoggera (Refidex 139 A10), corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets. The hall is wheelchair friendly and close to public transport.

Meetings commence at 9.45 a.m. with morning tea, and the official start is 10 a.m. when club business, judging of exhibits, and the introduction of a guest speaker take place.

Qualified judges and guest speakers are engaged each month and while the speakers’ topics, in the main, focus on horticulture, some speakers deal with well-being, health, craft, floral art, etc. and much knowledge and good fellowship are to be gained from attending. There’s no need for members to be gardeners.

At each meeting there’s a lucky door prize, continuous raffle, and trade and plant exchange tables where members and visitors have an opportunity to share excess plants and cuttings.

Visitors and new members are always welcome. New members who do not have a show schedule and would like to exhibit specimens from their garden at the February meeting, should contact Pat, the president, on 3356 1256, about the classes on the show schedule.

The Gap Garden Club Est. 1963 As the year draws to a close, members can reflect on a wonderful year of gardening events,field trips, both locally and interstate, and many varied and interesting guest speakers.

The committee has worked hard during the year to make the club meetings and outings varied and informative, as well as the assistance of other members in opening their gardens for clinic days, and organising the tours to Armidale and the Southern Highlands.

The Exhibit Bench has been very popular at meetings, with some beautiful entries each month in the floral art section, and keen gardeners entering their very best plants and produce in the horticultural section. There has been friendly competition for our annual trophies being presented at our Christmas luncheon and final meeting for the year.

This year, 16 new members joined the club so we hope they have enjoyed the ‘participation and good fellowship’ with other members.

We wish everyone happy gardening over our Christmas break- we will resume in February- our first meeting is on Tuesday 28th.
