Interestingly, because native bees have adapted to our region’s climate and flora, native bees are often more efficient at pollinating native Australian plants than introduced species.

Meanwhile, blue-banded bees, so called “buzz pollinators,” because they vibrate their bodies to release pollen, are especially helpful for pollinating garden plants like tomatoes and eggplants.

The ‘buzz’ is that the presence of native bees in our urban environments contributes to healthier and more productive ecosystems, from bushland reserves to urban gardens.

The good news is supporting native bees to thrive in our local area is easy. You can plant a native flowering species in your garden, leave a small patch of bare ground for ground-nesting bees, or even install a simple “bee hotel”. In return, these tiny pollinators will keep our suburbs blooming, one flower at a time.

The year is speeding away. This month’s cover article features eco tips and teddy bears – of the bee variety – leading up to the Brisbane West Eco Fest taking place on 16 August in The Gap. A great event for all ages – with local community stalls, guest speakers, workshops, kids activities, wildlife show, free native plants, food and drinks, and more.

PaddingtonSongbirds New Community Singing Group Invites Western Brisbane Seniors to Sing, Connect and Thrive A new community singing group is giving older residents across Brisbane’s western suburbs the opportunity to improve their wellbeing, meet new friends and rediscover the joy of singing.

Paddington Songbirds, a new initiative supported by BrisWest Centre, is now welcoming expressions of interest from anyone who enjoys singing, regardless of musical experience or ability.

With loneliness and social isolation recognised as growing challenges for older Australians, community singing is proving to be a simple and enjoyable way to support healthy ageing. Research has shown that singing together can improve mood, reduce stress, strengthen social

connections and even enhance breathing, memory and confidence.

Best of all, no previous singing experience is required.

Paddington Songbirds has been created to provide a relaxed and inclusive environment where people can enjoy familiar songs, have fun and connect with others. There are no auditions, no pressure to perform and no need to read music. “We know that music has an extraordinary ability to bring people together,” said founder Grace Lam. “Paddington Songbirds isn’t about singing perfectly - it’s about creating friendships, building confidence and giving people something enjoyable to look forward to each week.”

The weekly group is expected to attract participants from Paddington and surrounding western suburbs seeking a welcoming activity that combines creativity, friendship and wellbeing. Community members are encouraged to register before the first session to secure their place.

WINS SILVER

at World Championships!

Ryan Edgar (a local student) and Thomas Turner have won a silver medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U18 World Championships, claiming a historic win in The Hague - as the first Australian men's team to achieve this.

They finished up as runners up to the gold medal winning team Germany, 21-17.

It was a phenomenal result for the boys. They finished second in their pool after victories over Switzerland and the Netherlands and a narrow loss to France. In the knockout stages, they defeated Argentina, Lithuania, and Norway to reach the semi-finals. After a hard-fought three-set win against Poland (19-17), they advanced to the final, where they ultimately lost to Germany.

Both boys played with incredible heart and fully deserved their place in the final.

An amazing achievement for Ryan and Thomas, following on from their U18 Asian Championship title.

Mitchelton & Districts GardenClub Fascinating Orchids Members of the Mitchelton Garden Club were treated to an engaging and information-packed morning recently when local orchid expert Lynda Rapkins presented a talk dedicated entirely to the fascinating world of orchids, with a special focus on growing them successfully in Brisbane's subtropical climate.

Lynda began by walking the audience through the incredible diversity of the orchid family, before turning her attention to practical advice for local growers. She spoke at length about the challenges and opportunities Brisbane's warm, humid summers and mild winters present, offering tips on choosing orchid varieties best suited to the region, such as Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums and native Australian species.

Attendees were particularly interested in her guidance on watering routines, potting mediums, and positioning plants to get the right balance of light and airflow without exposing them to harsh afternoon sun. Lynda also addressed common problems Brisbane growers face, including humidity-related fungal issues and pest management during the wetter months.

The talk concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, with members eager to troubleshoot their own orchid-growing struggles.

Many left inspired to re-pot, relocate, or simply pay closer attention to their orchid collections at home.

In September we will welcome Carol Kerkin as our guest speaker.

Carol will be sharing her expertise on cottage gardens and salvias. Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at the Enoggera Memorial Hall (entry via Trundle St). Doors open at 9:30 am - entry is $5.00 and morning tea is complimentary. Visitors are always most welcome.

The picture shows year-six hands assembling one here in The Gap. This provides a huge boost to education in such places and teaches kids here that there are less fortunate people, without diesel generators.

Taylor RangeClub Club Taylor Range Club Biodiversity Caring for a special corner of our local environment Many people know Taylor Range Club as a community and recreation club tucked away in St Johns Wood, Ashgrove. What may be less well known is just how unique the land around the Club is.

Situated beside Enoggera Creek, the Club is home to a significant stretch of creek bank, riparian habitat and bushland. It is a beautiful setting and one we take seriously, recognising our responsibility to care for and strengthen its biodiversity.

Our monthly Biodiversity Group brings together Club members and local volunteers to remove invasive weeds, care for native plantings and restore areas around the creek and across the wider site. Regular volunteers Will, Jenny, Mike and others bring their time and energy each month. As a Board Director, I coordinate the group, guided by Janette Mangan, whose enormous environmental knowledge and experience shapes our work. David leads much of the ongoing creek restoration work.

A major milestone was the planting of 200 native plants through the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Planting Grant, initiated

by Padma and supported by Save Our Waterways Now (SOWN). After the March 2022 floods cleared part of the waterway, further riparian and creek floodplain planting began. Each year, around 250 plants have been added between the waterway and upper bank.

Volunteers have tackled Balloon Vine, Mother-in-law’s Tongue, prickly Bougainvillea and other invasive weeds. Native garden beds have been established and mulched, while the Club has invested in removing Cocos Palms and large Murrayas. Taylor Range Club is also a Land for Wildlife property.

This long-term work takes knowledge, persistence, partnership and many willing hands. Our monthly biodiversity working bees are open to Club members and the wider community, and we welcome people who would like to get involved.

We’ll be sharing a stand with SOWN at the 2026 Brisbane West Eco Fest at The Gap State High School on 16 August. Come and say hello and discover more about Taylor Range Club and our biodiversity work.

Ashgrove The Gap Lions Club Installation of the Board of Directors for the new Lions year is a time for reflection; a time to celebrate and acknowledge achievements over the past year and for the Incoming President to foreshadow priorities for the coming year. This liminal moment is captured in the Lions emblem, which features the profile of a lion facing to the left, looking to the past and another facing right, looking to the future.

The new Board of Directors was installed by District Governor, Narelle Gluer, Sunday afternoon, 28 June at Red Hill Bowls, Sports and Community Club, with Lions, partners, Friends of Lions and guests in attendance.

Over $40,000 was distributed by the Club in the past year, with the majority going to local organisations and lesser amounts to National and International causes.

Trek2Health Why an Ecological Approach is Shaping the Future of Trek2Health At Trek2Health, we believe the future of mental and physical wellbeing for frontline personnel lies not in treating the mind and body separately, but in understanding how people, their environment, and their actions work together. This is the foundation of our evidence-based ecological approach.

For many years, health programs have focused on education, treatment, or motivation alone. While these remain important, growing scientific evidence shows that lasting change occurs through meaningful engagement with natural environments, supportive communities, and purposeful action. Rather than simply talking about resilience, Trek2Health creates opportunities for participants to experience it.

Our ecological model recognises that improvements in mental health, physical fitness, confidence, and resilience emerge when people actively engage with challenging yet supportive environments. Every trek, every conversation, every shared challenge, and every step taken in nature strengthens the connection between brain, body, and environment. This integrated approach promotes neuroplasticity, improves physical health, regulates stress, and builds the capacity to adapt to the demands of frontline life.

Incoming President, Neil Phillips acknowledged the success of Club fund raising but also the fact that much of what the Club does to serve our community is not through providing money but rather through providing volunteer hours. “I think we should grab these opportunities when they present themselves,” he said.

Throughout 2027, our programs will progressively introduce this evidence-based framework across every module. Participants will explore three key concepts that underpin our approach: Affordances (recognising opportunities for positive action), Social Environment (the power of connection and shared experience), and Niche Construction (creating environments that support long-term wellbeing).

The guest speaker in June was Associate Professor Vince Kelly (QUT). His presentation was titled “The Belief Effect: How a Positive Mindset Shapes Healthy Aging.” This engaging and evidence-based talk explored how our attitudes, expectations and beliefs about the process of aging can have a powerful impact on our physical health, cognitive function and overall quality of life.

This evolution represents an exciting new chapter for Trek2Health.

By combining world-leading research with practical, nature-based experiences, we are building a program that not only improves health today but equips frontline personnel with the adaptive skills needed to thrive throughout their careers and beyond.

SOWN Pretty Flowers, but Deadly to Native Insects

Rotary Club Of Paddington A New Rotary Year Begins: Creating Lasting Impact Together July marked the beginning of a new Rotary year, and the Rotary Club of Paddington is excited to embark on another year of service, friendship and community impact.

Brisbane’s subtropical climate allows a vibrant range of flowering trees and shrubs in our streets, parks and gardens. However, some popular exotic plants come at a hidden cost. Many have become invasive weeds, and some can be fatal to native insects which contribute to pollinations and food chains.

The beautiful Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is now a threatened species, due to loss of dry vine forest and the butterfly’s host plant (the native vine Pararistolochia praevenosa), and the spread of a closely related flowering vine from Brazil (Dutchman’s Pipe Aristolochia elegans).

Adult butterflies are ‘tricked’ into laying eggs on the exotic vine leaves, which are toxic to the emerging caterpillars.

African Tulip trees (Spathodea campanulata) are widespread and popular, both in gardens and as street trees. It produces striking orange flowers rich in sugary nectar throughout the year, attracting native birds and insects. However, its pollen, nectar and flower secretions are toxic to native stingless bees and other insects, which become trapped in the tree’s large, cup-shaped flowers. These flowers have also been linked to Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome, fatal to Rainbow Lorikeets.

Both Dutchman’s Pipe and the African Tulip Tree are Category 3 declared weeds which cannot be sold in Queensland, and landholders are encouraged to remove them from their properties.

Other ornamental plants known to be harmful to native insects include Angel’s Trumpet, Oleander and Rhus Tree.

SOWN recommends removal of these plants and replacement with local species which enhance biodiversity, and cause no harm to our local insects.

Age no barrier for 80-year-old prison chaplain Meet Myra, the 80-year-old prison chaplain who has no plans to quit supporting people inside a southeast Queensland correctional centre any time soon. The local greatgrandmother has been a dedicated volunteer with Gaythorne-based Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy for 18 years.

Myra provides vital emotional and spiritual support to people facing dark times inside prison. She also strives to help break the cycle of prisoners being released, reoffending and returning to jail.

Myra was inspired to become a chaplain after she first visited a prison in – of all places – Moldova.

“The first day we were there we were taken into a prison. I thought we were just going to look it over … but I was asked to give a message to 200 men without preparation,” Myra recalls.

“I was convinced that inside prisons was where I was to go. As soon as I got home, I applied to join Inside Out.” Chaplains are well regarded inside correctional centres and vital supports for prisoners’ rehabilitation.

“For men on the outside you often find that grandma is the person in a family who tries to hold it together,” Myra said.

“I’m a good age to be a chaplain because I’m like a grandma for these prisoners. They can talk to you easily, and I hear their stories.”

Myra says there is an increasing demand for prison chaplains, noting that since she commenced the correctional centre’s prisoner population has almost doubled – and getting younger.

“We’re starting to see more guys in their 20s who look about 15. Some of these new prisoners are terrified,” she said.

That’s why Myra is looking forward to bringing up 20 years of faithful service with Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy – and hopefully a few more years beyond that.

“I’ll continue as a prison chaplain until God stops me – or I’m too old.”

Kobo vs. Kindle – the great debate!

For me nothing beats a physical book, but when it comes to travel or even just ease of obtaining a book, an e-reader comes in very handy. But which to choose?

Look at the reasons you want one and go from there. Do you want to buy ebooks online? Access books from your library for free? Obtain netgalleys?

Integrate with a reading tracker?

When buying ebooks online it’s no surprise Kindle can offer cheaper and wider variety. The Amazon library is huge and they have sales and daily kindle deals. Kobo ebooks can be accessed through the kobo.com.au site and it does have a wide range and some sales, but not as many as Kindle.

For library borrowing most libraries can connect to the Libby or Borrowbox apps. Both of these are available on Kobo. Libby even allows multiple library cards so you get a huge range of ebooks to choose from. Kindle cannot connect to the library.

Netgalley, an online hub where you can request early copies of ebooks in exchange for review, can send direct to Kindle and they recently added Kobo.

In regards to integrating with a reading tracker, Kobo can now link direct to StoryGraph. It offers stats and links to other readers, similar to Good Reads but independently owned. Kindle cannot link directly to a tracker at this stage, although as both are owned by Amazon I imagine it will link to Good Reads soon.

Wild InThe The Gap

“A Policeman’s Lot is not a happy one” In 1859 at the time of separation the police force was staffed by one office to every 425 citizens and a Constable was paid 5/6 per day. A uniform was provided and he received an allowance of £20 per year to feed and provide care for his horse. Many of these beasts were considered inferior, described as “old worn out and miserable crawlers”. A policeman often provided his own horse at a cost far more than the allowance. During the 1900/1 drought pushbikes replaced horses in many instances. His personal equipment consisted of a night stick, carbine with bayonet, pistol and 20 rounds of ammunition.

Single men were much preferred as housing for a family was far more difficult to provide. Accommodation was overcrowded with the men being housed in stone, galvanized iron, movable huts, tents and even cane grass structures. Duties included searching for those lost, horse theft, assaults, larceny, murder and gold escort duties.

The first Police Commissioner was David Seymour who instigated many improvements to the discipline and training of officers.

In the 1950s Brisbane was beginning the transition from town to city. Vehicular traffic began to overtake trams and buses; however there were only three sets of traffic lights. The very busy five way intersections at Albion, Petrie Bite and Wooloongabba (including the railway crossing) were controlled by police on point duty. This was a rather hazardous occupation as many men were injured.

An outstanding personality was the Police Constable Richard Daniells.

His athleticism and distinctive hand movements earned him the name “Dancing Dickie” and many were the car loads of people who drove past him simply to view his directions. He directed traffic from the 1950s to 1982.

The Gap Baptist Church Making good decisions We have to make decisions everyday otherwise we would do nothing. But even doing nothing is a decision we make. The trick to having a good life is to make wise decisions.

A great line of the crooners is, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread but Angels never fall in love so how are they to know.”

So often our decisions are made from emotions or feelings rather than logic and wisdom. Even logical decisions do not guarantee good outcomes.

So how can we make wise decisions?

The collection of proverbs in the Bible are often quoted by non-religious people because they just make sense. Have a look and you will see for yourself. The first nine chapters of Proverbs is a discourse about Wisdom and Folly. It is only a couple of pages and I really recommend it. It is very poetic, easy to read, and is written as parental advice to their maturing children.

A recurring theme in these chapters is that “The fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. That makes sense, doesn’t it? If we want wisdom about a decision, then we should be seeking out what Our Father in Heaven thinks about it.

The Gap Pioneer & History Group Inc Bullock team goes nuts!

Written by Merv Kay in 2005 After reading a story on the bullocky’s travelling through The Gap long ago, it got me thinking. The last time I saw a bullock team was when I was only a young ‘un, and I still am in spirit.

At the time I was living with my grandfather, Alf Best, in the old “Sweet Home Dairy” farmhouse in Payne Road which was located near the present Payne Road State School.

On the opposite side of Payne Road and a little to the west there was a large Moreton Bay fig tree and two Bunya pines where the home of Henry Howard Payne once stood.

Held across Ruby Red Jewellery Artspace and the neighbouring Topology Creative Hub, In Her Skin celebrates the beauty, diversity and strength of the female form. Through expressive paintings, Schneider explores body positivity, self-acceptance and the individuality that makes every woman unique.

The opening event on Sunday, 9 August at 3 pm promises an inspiring afternoon of art, wine and cheese. Guests will enjoy a guided tasting of four exceptional Australian wines hosted by renowned sommelier Mark Whitaker from The Wine and Larder, paired with artisan cheeses

With just 30 tickets available, guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist, learn about the wine and cheese pairings, and be among the first to experience the exhibition.

In Her Skin is the inaugural Art&Eats Presents event, a new series by Colin Bushell and Katherine Kemp, showcasing Brisbane artists through experiences that bring together art, food, wine and community.

Payne holdings and as time went by, the trees were cut down with the aid of the old crosscut saw which was a lot harder and slower than the chain saws of today.

After the branches were cut off, the logs were rolled with the help of bullocks onto the wagon and hauled away by a team of about twelve bullocks. With the passing of the logs also went our future supply of Bunya nuts. When roasted in a fire they were very yummy, as long as you didn’t eat the yellow centre piece which was said to be poisonous.

I took their word for it and never tried it, that’s why I am still here today.

You will see some of our members exhibiting once again at The Gap Soirée on Saturday 22 August in the foyer to the performance venue at The Gap State School.

This night is always a joyous celebration of all forms of creativity, especially music, and we are lucky to have an event of this calibre held locally.

29-30 August: for the final weekend of the month we are hosting our 5th annual Open Studios event!!

More often than not, an artist’s home studio or creative space is a private haven that exists just for them. A quiet room filled with inspiration, where much time is spent alone, slowly making and creating.

Newmarket ViewClub In June our club officially came of age, and we celebrated this milestone as you should when you reach 18 by having a wonderful party. Our party had everything including games, decorations, laughter, shared memories of growing up, challenging and entertaining activities.

As a grand finale, as you should do when you turn 18yrs, we celebrated with not one but two delicious cakes thanks to Anne, our secretary.

The cakes were supplied by the Marhaba Café. The café is in the basement of the City Hall and great place to visit to eat or just have a quiet spot to sit and rest when you are in the city. If you remember visiting the RedCross Café in the City Hall, a trip down memory lane might be a bonus. The Marhaba is a social enterprise café set up to help break down barriers for people struggling to find employment opportunities due to many issues which may include mental health issues and disabilities. The café does this providing training and employment opportunities.

To assist in funding this remarkable service a nonprofit catering business is available. Anne purchased two cakes through the catering business and both cakes were delicious. The main cake was a luscious rich, beautifully decorated chocolate cake and the other was a gluten free Pear and Raspberry cake.

Newmarket View (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) Club is a leading Australian-wide women’s organisation who are dedicated to supporting children in need with their education through the Smith Family. Our club provides a friendly and safe meeting place for women (all ages welcome) to connect with other women in the community and make lasting friendships. We currently sponsor 8 wonderful children helping them achieve their education dreams.

For one weekend each year, a group of our members choose to open their studio doors to the public. The diversity this year is incredible - mosaic art, enamels, photography, resin art, ceramics, jewellery, oil paintings, mixed media, stitching, portraits…and so much more!

This is a special opportunity to meet our members and see them working on their craft in real time - with live demonstrations and in progress works on display. Many creations will be available for sale, with some being shown to the public for the first time. Every location will be unique, all set amongst the natural surrounds and stunning greenery of The Gap. If you are a local and enjoy all things art and creativity, our membership is always open. Walton Bridge The GapGirl Guides Walton Bridge The Gap Guide District.

Walton Bridge The Gap Guides have enjoyed a wide variety of activities over this past month. Gumtrees and the Gumnuts have celebrated National Italian Day and Queensland Day. Guides went on a night hike to Wittonga Park and rock climbing at Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

Snow Trek 2026: 10 Guides, three Leaders from Walton Bridge The Gap plus 14 Guides, eight Leaders from John Oxley Region enjoyed a seven-day Snow Trek to Jindabyne and Perisher Valley.

We left Brisbane on an 8.25am flight to Canberra. We travelled to Cooma for lunch (McDonalds) then onto the Snowy Valley Ski Resort in Jindabyne for our five-night stay.

Monday to Thursday we headed to Smiggin Holes. Our beginners had fun mastering the magic carpet at Smiggins while our experienced skiers travelled to Perisher with their instructors for their three-hour lessons. Thursday afternoon the snow started to fall with 30cm falling overnight.

On Friday all groups went to Perisher and had a fun skiing the slopes.

Friday afternoon was snow play at Smiggins and the girls have fun burying a couple of the leaders.

On Saturday after our overnight stay at Kana Scout Den in Canberra we had a morning visit to Questacon Science and Technology Centre.

Then to the airport for our 3.35pm flight home.

We all had a snowing good time.

The GapProbus Probus Club Barbara Eastcoe, our speaker in July, addressed a truly local topic: the history of our adjacent suburb Mitchelton. Named by, and after, the Mitchell family from England in the 1870’s, the area was not subdivided until the 1890’s. The Mitchell and Blackwood families remained important. The railway, as in so many places, was crucial in turning from a rural area into a true suburb.

July, in Brisbane, means Christmas! Members duly celebrated at Medley, down by the river at Kangaroo Point. The menu was determinedly non-trad-Christmas, and a good time was had by all.

The GapRepairCafe RepairCafe Brisbane CitySounds Sounds We are looking for more volunteers!

There is growing community interest in repairing our belongings instead of discarding them to landfill and buying replacements. But often it’s cheaper to buy a new one, or hard to find potential repairers.

We offer free repairs for many household items by skilled volunteer repairers. But our capacity to repair things is often constrained by the number of repairers available each month.

Electrical repairs are always in the highest demand, and unfortunately, we turn many people away, as we only have one licenced electrician.

If you know (or are) a licenced electrician who could give four hours per month to help our community, we would love to hear from you!

We’d also love to expand the range of items we can repair. Do you have a knack for leatherwork, re-stringing guitars, restoring old photos, or something else? Maybe you love photography and capturing special moments. We’d love you to join our team! In return for a few hours each month, you’ll be rewarded with delicious snacks, coffee or tea, plus the amazing buzz that comes with helping your neighbours!

Newmarket Bocce Club News Precision At Its Best Sunday 14th July, 23 bocce players ventured onto the courts for a friendly game of precision bowl.

The game consists of a target mat which is placed on the bocce court.

Posties face growing danger with dog incidents

Australia Post is urging dog owners to take action as new alarming data reveals 47 Posties are encountering an aggressive or unrestrained dog each week, an average of nine incidents every day.

In the past six months, more than 1,200 dog-related incidents have been reported nationwide - a 5% increase on the same period last year, raising serious concerns for the safety and wellbeing of frontline team members. New South Wales remains the worst offender for dog-related incidents involving Posties in the country, accounting for more than a third of all cases.

Despite repeated warnings, the majority of incidents occur when dogs are not properly secured during deliveries. Almost two-thirds of incidents happen on the street after a dog escapes a property or is roaming freely, with over a third of those incidents involving Posties being chased down the street. More than a third of all incidents take place on a customer’s property, often as a Postie approaches or leaves the front door after making a delivery.

These encounters can escalate quickly, with Posties suffering injuries including bites, puncture wounds, scratches and lacerations. In more serious cases, Posties have been knocked off their vehicles or required hospital treatment.

One year on from introducing citronella spray as a last-line-of-defense measure, it continues to play an important role in protecting Posties from aggressive dog encounters. The non-toxic, water-based spray is designed to briefly distract dogs, giving team members time to move to safety, and has proven effective in 95% of cases in the past six months. Posties have reported feeling safer on their rounds, knowing they have an additional tool to protect themselves if faced with an imminent threat.

Australia Post reports all dog-related incidents to local councils to support enforcement and mitigate risk, and may suspend deliveries to a property or street where it is unsafe.

Prevention in the first instance is key.

Australia Post advises dog owners to follow the three PAWS for delivery steps: Sit, Stay, Secure: •

Sit your dog safely in a contained place, separate room, or behind a locked gate at the back of the home when expecting a delivery.

Make sure it’s a place where the dog can Stay while your Postie delivers your parcel.

•

Keep your dog Secure behind your door or gate, allowing the Postie safe access to make the delivery and leave the property.

A portrait and reflection project for Queensland veterans who have served overseas Trek2Health and Colin Bushell Photography are inviting expressions of interest for ‘In Your Eyes’, a photography and storytelling project that will honour the service, sacrifice, resilience and lived experience of Queensland veterans.

The project will result in a curated exhibition and a high-quality photo book, with launch events planned for Remembrance Day 2026 and Anzac Day 2027.

Who can take part?

To be eligible, participants must have served overseas as part of the Australian Defence Force and be permanently residing in Queensland as of 1 January 2026.

St Mark's Anglican Church A View from the Pew

Twilight seminar series - August 2026 It has been said, "Nothing is certain except death and taxes"- yet, despite the certainty of death, there is generally an aura of silence over related matters. Often this silence is accompanied by fear, uncertainty and bewildering complexity. For those in the later stages of life it has been exacerbated in recent years by many changes in government policies, technology access and computer literacy plus the emergence of new approaches to social changes for the aged.

With that in mind, St Mark’s of the Gap has developed a four-part seminar series to address these issues aimed to give mental, emotional and spiritual insight and support for all as we journey towards our end-of-life. The seminar is not only for those in the twilight-years but would be of value to children of elderly parents, carers and support workers.

The first seminar deals with the legal issues and necessary documentation such as Wills, Enduring Power of Attorney and Medical Directives. The second seminar provides information regarding recent changes to Government policies and offers help with accessing various useful agencies. The third is examining the grief process, and the final is related to exploring how to plan a brilliant funeral. Speakers will draw on their professional experiences. Jonty Bush will be opening the series.

Dates are 1, 8, 15 and 22 August, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The cost is $5 for each session, and the venue is St Mark’s Church, Waterworks Road. There is no need to register.

Red Hill-Ithaca Probus Club Probus is a network of social clubs that provide retirees and semi-retirees with the opportunity to connect socially.

Probus Club members at our club enjoy making new friends and discovering new interests with like-minded retirees in our community. We get together once a month to listen to interesting speakers. Our club engages in a range of activities, trips, and outings, for members to participate in.

We have a cards group, a movie group, a walking group, a coffee and cake morning tea, a book table, and lots more.

Balaangala Community Group Pandanus Pandanus (Pandanus tectorius) is a familiar coastal plant for many Queenslanders.

The name for this plant in the Yuggera language is winnam - as in the suburb of Wynnum, where many Pandanus grow. First Nations people know how to process the fruit and seeds to make them palatable for eating.

Pandanus leaves are also widely used for weaving.

Pandanus can reach 5-6 metres in height comprising separate male and female trees. The leaves are about 1 metre in length and 5-8 cm wide with sheathing bases. They emerge from the branches in a screw-like arrangement which gives rise to the common name - Screw Pines. The leaves have short spines along the edges and on their midribs. The plants are supported at the base by prop roots which help to anchor the plant in sandy soil. The flowers occur in clusters and plants may flower throughout the year.

Female plants produce large pineapple-like fruits. When ripe the woody segments of the fruit turn yellow, red or orange. Each segment contains an individual seed. Pandanus can be grown from seed collected from these fruit segments (which may take up to a year to ripen), or from large stem cuttings with some aerial roots attached.

Once the thorns are stripped from the long strappy leaves, the flexible but very strong fibre has beautiful natural variations of colour, and is used for weaving. First Nations women in northern Australia continue to harvest, dye and weave with their local Pandanus – which is a different species to the one that grows in southeast Queensland.

There are two Pandanus plants in the Balaangala garden, both of which are growing well.

The West Brisbane Orchid Society: 1965 To 2026 And Growing!

Members of The West Brisbane Orchid Society supported the recent North Moreton Show at the Lawnton Showgrounds. Members won several prizes, including Reserve Champion and Champion Species.

Planning is now well underway for the Society’s Spring Charity Show in association with The Australian Paphiopedilum Society. The Show will be held at the Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha, on 12-13 September.

A wise man once observed that “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance”. This is no less true of orchid cultivation: some pests don’t seem to know that it’s winter and time to take a holiday. I have found patches of scale on a couple of Cattleyas recently. Apparently, it’s time to take action! Eco-oil, with or without some pyrethrum, should do the trick.

Why don’t you come along to one of the Society’s meetings to learn more about orchids? The West Brisbane Orchid Society meets at The Gap Baptist Church on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm.

Hilder Road State School Exciting Times at Hilder Road State School Hilder Road State School recently celebrated three fantastic days of athletics, with learners participating in the Senior Athletics Carnival and Junior Athletics Carnival.

Our learners demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm and school spirit. Student leaders did an outstanding job supporting our younger learners, including our Prep students participating in their first athletics carnival.

It was also wonderful to see families cheering for learners across all houses, reflecting the strong sense of community that makes Hilder Road State School so special.

Excitement is now building for Porridge the Musical which is running at Stuartholme School.

Following the success of The Adventures of Super Stan last year, our learners have been rehearsing enthusiastically at school and on Sundays. This year’s production will feature our largest group of performers yet and promises to be another wonderful celebration of student talent.

We finished the term on a high with our Zing Activ Dance Concert, which showcased the enthusiasm, confidence and talent of our students. Throughout the term, students worked hard to learn new dance routines, and it was fantastic to see their efforts come together in such an entertaining performance. A special highlight of the concert

was our whole-school Auslan performance, which demonstrated not only our students' skills but also our commitment to inclusion and celebrating diverse ways of communicating.

Our learning extended well beyond the classroom. The Year 4/5 class has been working alongside Mr Mitchell to learn about composting and sustainability. Through this hands-on experience, students have been exploring how small actions can make a positive impact on our environment while developing a deeper understanding of responsible stewardship.

We were also incredibly fortunate to welcome our amazing Broncos Development Officer, and SPC dad, Jharal Yow Yeh, along with talented NRLW players Azalleyah and Kerri.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed hearing their stories, learning new skills and being inspired by their passion, perseverance and teamwork. Experiences such as these help bring learning to life and encourage our students to dream big.

The Gap State School Looking Ahead Together

There is something special about Term 3. It is the time of year when many families make one of the biggest decisions in their child's early years – choosing the school where they will begin their educational journey.
