Gap State High School 2019 Student Leaders’ Investiture The Gap State High School’s 2019 Student Leaders’ Investiture was conducted on Tuesday 19 February.

Following after the Acknowledgement of Country and the National Anthem, Principal Mrs Anne McLauchlan and State Member for Cooper, Hon. Kate Jones MP addressed the audience before the Paganini Strings performed to the guests, staff and students.

The official Badges of Office were presented to this Year’s leaders and the Student leaders’ pledge was read, before the School Captains made their first official address. The Gap State High School community wish our Student Leaders every success in 2019 and look forward to working with them to ensure that 2019 is both an enjoyable and rewarding year.

Incredibles 2 Movie in the Park – 6 April 2019 Mark your calendar for Saturday 6 April! With the support of the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund, The Gap Ward Office will be hosting a ‘Movie in the Park at Wittonga Park, The Gap’.

‘Incredibles 2’ will be screening from 6.15pm. The Ashgrove/The Gap Lions Club will be hosting a free community barbecue from 5pm, there will also be a food truck onsite selling tasty vegetarian food.

Brisbane City Council’s Pop Up Library and ‘Giant Games’ will be setting up in the park from 4.30pm, come along and have some fun!

This is a plastic free event, all recycling cans will be donated to Hilder Road State School.

In the event of wet weather on the day, please call BCC Call Centre on 3403 8888 to find out whether the Movie in the Park is going ahead or being rescheduled.

This site is an important riparian corridor adjacent to Enoggera creek and connects aquatic diversity from Fish Creek to Breakfast Creek.

125 Years of the St Vincent de Paul In the aftermath of the 1983 Flood, local community members gathered to plan how they could help rebuild and assist locals that had been devastated by the floods. These volunteers, first Queensland Vincentarians, then founded the Red Hill Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society, the first in the state.

A special mass was held at St Brigid’s Church to celebrate the 125 year milestone since that very first meeting of the Red Hill Conference.

Our community should be proud that an organisation with such a long history of Celebrating Mass with St Vincent de Paul on their 125th Anniversary helping those most vulnerable in our community, is still making a difference today – particular with Queenslanders currently affected by drought, floods and storms.

Protecting our children I was very proud last week in parliament to vote for new legislation in Queensland that makes it a crime to distribute a person’s intimate images without their consent.

We know that sharing images without the approval of the person is often used for cyberbullying and as act of revenge following the breakdown of a relationship.

That’s why we have taken action and passed these new laws with some of the strongest protections for our young people in Australia.

For example, the laws include: that a person 16 years and under cannot consent to the sharing of these images that photo-shopped or edited images and videos will also be covered that threats to distribute the images, even if those images do not exist, could still mean jail If you would like more information on how the Queensland Government is addressing cyberbullying please visit https://campaigns.premiers.qld.gov.au/ antibullying/

The Gap RSL Sub-Branch As part of our continuing service to The Gap community, The Gap RSL will be continuing its Justice of the Peace (JP) service this year, in conjunction with The Gap Village Centre management.

If you need a JP, you can find us at The Gap Shopping Village each Tuesday between 10 and 12 pm. Our JPs can provide services such as witnessing of documents and our service is open to anybody within the community.

If you are a JP (or CDec) and are able to contribute about two hours a month to our JP roster, please contact Doug Parry on 0466 989 427.

We’ve got some exciting news! The Sub-branch, supported by community donations and funding from the Commonwealth Government’s Armistice Centenary Grants Program has commissioned Mr Cameron Eaton, a resident of The Gap, to design and construct a formal entry to the recently upgraded memorial

section of the Walton Bridge Reserve. Fittingly, the project will be completed for use on ANZAC Day and marchers will enter Memorial Park though the entry for the first time this year. Don’t miss it!

The Subbranch must thank the Hon Jane Prentice MP Federal Member for Ryan and Assistant Minister for Social Services & Disability Services, Cr Steven Toomey BCC Councillor for The Gap Ward and members of The Gap community for their support and generosity in bringing this commemorative project to fruition. It truly will be the cherry on top of all the wonderful new Memorial Park upgrades.

The Gap’s commemorative activities for ANZAC Day this year will include a Dawn Service from 5.40am, the Community March from 9.15am, followed by the Commemorative Service at the Walton Bridge Memorial Park commencing at 9.30am.

Federal Update Fall of Singapore This year marks 77 years since the ‘Fall of Singapore’.

On the 17th of February, I laid a wreath on behalf of Ryan residents at a Memorial Service held at the Shrine of Remembrance in Ann Street, Brisbane.

We remembered those members of the 2/10th Field Regiment, 8th Division Australian Imperial Force, the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Nurses, and Associated Services who made the greatest sacrifice for our Nation.

City Deal for South East Queensland The Coalition Government recently announced that they will be working with the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council as part of the South East Queensland City Deal.

The Coalition Government is investing $7.2 billion into major transport infrastructure projects in and around Brisbane including $200 million for additional lanes on the Ipswich Motorway between Rocklea and Oxley; $300 million to support better public transport via the Brisbane Metro; $2.7 billion to upgrade the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and $1.2 billion for six projects to eliminate congestion on the M1 Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

‘If I know I’ll be passing the school at 7.30 am,’ says car pool member Bronwyn Richards ‘I can post those details on our Facebook group and if that suits another member, they are welcome to my spare seats.’

The details around pick up and drop off points is negotiated between the parties.

‘It’s early days for the group,’ reflected Bronwyn, ‘but if more people get involved, it could take some of the stress out of our commute as well as take some cars off the road. LNP candidate Julian Simmonds has welcomed the announcement of $500,000 funding grant for the Bardon Latrobe Football Club as part of the second $30 million round of the Coalition Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program.

“After being unsuccessful in the first round of funding, the Bardon Latrobe Football Club contacted me to help fight for these Federal funds and I was pleased to tour the club myself to see just how desperately these funds are needed,” Mr Simmonds said.

“This significant grant of half a million dollars will enable the club to take their facilities to the next level and produce an upgraded clubhouse fitted out with new change facilities” The funds will also be used to upgrade the kitchen and canteen and provide more space for players who were previously having to store gear in public areas.”

“Securing these Federal funds is yet another way I am protecting our local lifestyle through the enhancement of our community facilities.”

“Investments in grassroots sport like this one helps us increase participation and promote the social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport – a key priority for the Morrison Liberal National Government,” Mr Simmonds said.

The Bardon Latrobe Football Club was founded (as Latrobe FC) in 1916. The Club’s home ground is Bowman Park in Bardon, Brisbane. The club caters for players of all ages, gender and ability. From squirts all the way to our over 35s Mens teams.

A local resident generously giving to the appeal

It is hard not to be touched by the flood disaster that North Queensland has recently suffered. To see the jubilation of the farmers, who had been suffering through a drought, when the rains finally came but which quickly turned to despair was hard to watch. So many people have lost their homes and their livelihood.

The Lions motto is “Where there is a need, there is a Lion” and this recent event was no exception. Immediately the extent of this disaster was apparent, the Australian Lions Foundation was able to give $100.000 to Lions clubs in the affected areas to put towards providing initial support where it was needed the most.

Ashgrove/The Gap Lions were also quick to play their part by collecting for the North Qld flood appeal in both The Gap Village and outside Woolworths in Ashgrove. In the three days our members were out collecting donations from the public, over $3.500. was raised. It is wonderful that people in our local community are so willing to help those who are dealing with this terrible event, an unprecedented natural disaster that will take many years to recover from. On behalf of the people in North Qld, Ashgrove/The Gap Lions thank you for your support.

to the Australian Lions Foundation who is then able to donate it to the Lions clubs in areas most in need. As all Lions clubs and the ALF is run entirely by volunteers, every dollar collected goes directly to where it is needed the most.

Youth of the Year club final At the end of February Ashgrove/The Gap Lions held our annual Lions Youth of the Year club final. This is a national Lions project, not to raise money, but to work with our local schools to encourage young people to develop their leadership skills. Mt St Michaels College and Marist CollegeAshgrove have both put forward two students to compete for the title of Youth of the Year and to represent our club in the next level of the competition and, hopefully, to continue on to the National final in May. At the time of writing the club final is yet to be held so all we can do is wish each participant the best of luck. The winner will be announced in the next edition of the Western Echo.

Ashgrove Forum Ashgrove Forum Communicators Club reconvened for 2019 on 16th January and held its 937th monthly meeting at the Ashgrove Library meeting room on Wednesday 20 February.

Member’s speaking topics covered media reviews of movies including the following which were highly recommended by the reviewers: “Vice”, a biographical comedy-drama film written and directed by Adam McKay which stars Christian Bale as former US President George W Bush’s U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney; “3 Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri”, a funny, raw, brutal dark comedy written by Martin McDonagh which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who rents the billboards to call attention to her daughter’s unsolved rape and murder; “First Man” directed by brilliant young Academy Award winning director Damien Chazelle, starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy, tells the personal story of Neil Armstrong and his wife Janet during the years that took Armstrong from a test pilot to a pioneering NASA astronaut who became the first man on the Moon in 1969.

Ashgrove Historical Society

The topic for the April meeting is Reminiscences of Nursing. This autobiographical sketch by Eunice Paten (18831973) of The Gap, a prominent nursing figure in her day, includes her service in both world wars and in civilian life, and will be presented by her great-niece, Katrina Paten. The meeting will be held at Ashgrove Library on Saturday 6 April from 10am to 12 noon. Visitors are welcome to attend the presentation and the morning tea that follows which provides an opportunity to share memories, chat to the guest speaker and purchase publications such as Lost Ashgrove ($25) which is our best seller.

Membership fees are $10 single per annum, or $15 couple/family. This includes the bi-monthly newsletter, Tram Stops, which is full of interesting information about Ashgrove and Brisbane.

TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE Residents to areas surrounding the Enoggera Close Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume.

Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h.

Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. During these core operating hours, residents in the surrounding areas may experience louder than normal noise levels. This could be due to a change in weather conditions or wind direction, or due to the type of munitions or simulation devices being employed to achieve a training outcome.

Defence now has the capability to notify residents of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residents of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in this notification process, please contact range control on (07) 3332 7455 and provide your name and mobile number.

The proliferation of townhouse developments in The Gap is a common topic of conversation in our district. One of these developments, “Tallowwood”, is located on Soldier Settlement land in Settlement Rd which was selected by ballot by Mark Proctor. The land settled by Mark and his wife Agnes was lot 101 of seven acres, two roods and 35perches, situated on the corner of (now)Settlement and Kaloma Roads. Mark and Agnes moved into their home in 1920. Later Mark purchased neighbouring lot 100. Like other soldier settlers, Mark established a poultry farm. Years of drought and lack of farming knowledge made success very difficult for these farmers. Supplementing the fortnightly pension of £2 with milk from house cows and vegetables grown on the farm Mark and Agnes raised eight children after their first son, Robert, died at ten months. Mark and Agnes Proctor now have 107 descendants, with the latest baby being born last Sunday, 17th February 2019.

Agnes Proctor was known throughout the district for her kindness and hospitality, especially to the other young war brides. The Proctor home was near the bus terminus and was a good place to stop off for a cup of tea and a chat. Most of the soldier settlers were very poor, and Agnes was even known to lend her shoes to an expectant mother when she travelled to Wickham Terrace for a rare medical check-up before her babies were born. On one occasion five Proctor children had whooping cough. Despite this, Agnes looked after her friend, Mrs Probert’s two children, who also had whooping cough, while she went to hospital to have another baby.

Our president, Jack Proctor, and his wife, Maureen, still live on part of the Proctor property. They are determined to see 100 years of occupancy of that land by the Proctor family next year.

Brisbane Tramway Museum The oldest tram in our fleet is 47, built in1901. A total of 62 trams of this class was built in Brisbane using imported electrical components such as motors, controllers etc.

Known locally as the “Matchbox” series, it was known internationally as the “Californian Combination Car” due to similarity of design to the San Francisco Cable Cars. One feature of these trams was the oil lamp installed inside the cabin. This lamp shone a light through a coloured disc at the leading end of the carriage to indicate which route that tram was taking so that passengers could identify the right tram at night—different colours were used for each route.

47 had the dubious honour of running on the shortest tram route in Australia—from Queen Street to the City Botanical Gardens along Edward Street.

Our big news this month is the forthcoming commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the last tram trip in Brisbane.

The museum will operate from 1.00 pm until 8.00 pm on Saturday 13th April—the exact date of the last trip in 1969.

We will have at least 6 trams running—from 47 through to 554—the tram that actually made that last trip. Apart from the tram rides, there will be static displays of our own trolley buses,

vintage tow truck and overhead line vehicle as well as vintage cars, trucks and motor cycles and historic BCC buses will run local tours during those hours.

There will be a number of attractions for the kids and food and drinks will be available during the afternoon and evening.

Fares will be $14.00 for adults, $11.00 concession, $7.00 for children and family passes for $42.00.

NBN now available to more suburbs in Brisbane’s north west The continued rollout of the National Broadband Network across Brisbane’s north western suburbs will deliver huge opportunities for local homes and businesses to transform the way they operate.

In the last month, more than 20,177 homes and businesses across Ashgrove, Bardon, Arana/Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove, The Gap and Samford can now access the nbn network via Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technology.

As adjoining areas across Enoggera and Gaythorne come online over the next few months a further 12,000 homes and businesses will also be eligible to connect to the NBN. Telstra Regional Area Manager May Boisen said the arrival of the NBN in these suburbs mark the beginning of a new digital era.

“Individuals, communities and businesses are becoming increasingly digital-dependent.

We’re streaming more video content than ever, uploading huge amounts of data and, by 2021 households are expected to own an average of 30 connected smart devices1,” she said.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church Fete

St. Paul’s Anglican Church Ashgrove in conjunction with the Ashgrove Dance Studio, will be holding a Fete on Saturday 23 March from 9.30am to 3pm at 10 Jubilee Terrace Ashgrove.

The fete is being staged to assist in raising funds to improve the current hall facilities. After a number

of unsuccessful grant applications to Local, State and Federal government grants, St Paul’s has taken up the challenge to dedicate 2019 to significantly improving the Church Hall, which will greatly benefit all groups, particularly the Ashgrove Dance Studio dancers, who use the hall on a regular basis.

LOCO are Looking for New Home

Delivering great tasting, fresh, The Gap Local Organic Cooperative Ltd. (known as The Gap LOCO) is still looking for a new home.

For four years they operated a shop space in the Old Pony Club building in Yoorala St, but had to leave in July last year.

While a financial setback for the co-op, the workers have kept this social enterprise afloat, by continuing to deliver certified organic produce to The Gap and surrounding areas.

The LOCO is a registered cooperative and social enterprise that is trying to establish a new way of doing business that is community based, community owned, environmentally sustainable, egalitarian and democratic. About 30 local families actively support the LOCO and its vision by ordering a delivery each week.

The LOCO has been offered some space for a shop front from a very supportive local organization. This arrangement which would be mutually beneficial for both groups, but plans are currently on hold, as this organization is still waiting on BCC to get its lease renewed. Hopefully this will happen soon and with community support we can gain permission to operate and fit out a new community owned shop space.

Hilder Road State School We have had such an amazing start to the new school year with many achievements and events already worthy of celebration. This year sees an expansion of our Performing Arts program with the addition of specialist drama lessons for all students, and auditions currently be conducted for our first ever school musical.

Our school community welcomed 63 new Preppie students and their families this year, with a wonderful Magic Show event last month that enabled all Prep and Year 1 families to come together. The P&C Association are gearing up to a busy year as our school celebrates 40 years this year!

Hilder Road students continue to show their talents this year with Harrison S making the district team for swimming and Dylan G making the district team for basketball. Caroline B, Daisy B, Leo M, and Sam N have all been selected for the Metropolitan Choral Honours Program. Congratulations to all students!

Last month we also held our Student Leaders Investiture Ceremony as we acknowledged the newly elected student representatives for 2019.

They conducted themselves admirably as they all pledged to uphold and support others to uphold our school’s virtues of being Harmonious, Engaged, Responsible and Organised.

This year will be a busy time in developing our school’s next 4-year strategic plan. We undertook a school review a couple of weeks ago, and look forward to hearing about the commendations and recommendations from the review team, which will inform the future strategic direction for our school community.

Jodie Watts - Principal Mt Nebo State School It is my privilege to be working in an Acting position as Principal of Mount Nebo State School for Term 1 this year. Having worked at various schools in the Mount Coot-tha Cluster for many years, in different capacities, I am very excited to be the leader of learning at Mount Nebo.

We are a small school with a big heart. If you haven’t heard, Mount Nebo State School is currently being transformed with a new double-teaching space building, which was transported from Pallara State School to Mount Nebo in the last few weeks of Term 4. Perhaps some of you saw it. We are now waiting, with baited breath, for the final stages of our Outdoor Learning Area, to be completed.

Students are learning several virtues, patience being key.

at Greenslopes S.S. as their Deputy Principal and Mrs Cathy Rough, Secretary of The Mount Nebo Resident’s Association, who presented the Student Leader badge to Aviv Oddy, our Year 6 Leader.

Aviv is an amazing writer and an unassuming student who learnt his leadership pledge off by heart. Besides this, he presented a realistic leadership goal to the school community of reigniting skits about values during whole school parades. Aviv will have the opportunity to participate in cluster activities this year, the first being the leadership camp at Samford State School in March and then the Mount Coot-tha Writers Camp.

I look forward to sharing the achievements of our students this year.

Stephen Rowe - Principal The Gap State High School We have had a wonderful start to 2019. Our first week back to school was very exciting especially for our new Year 7 students. We celebrated our first school assembly where the entire student body came together to officially start the year.

We are always very proud to see our new Year 7 students be welcomed into our school community by our Year 8 through to 12 as they stand and clap the sevens as they parade in with the school banner and ringing the old school bells heralding their arrival and the start to the new school year.

The 2019 Swimming Carnival saw over 1200 students attend the Albany Creek Leisure Centre. The carnival, despite the heavy rain in the morning, was a great success. Throughout the day, students from grade 7-12 participated in a range of fun swimming events such as pool noodle races, team relays and of course, the incredible slides. Students, who wanted to participate for Age Champion, swam in “Championship races” and this year saw our biggest number of swimmers partake in these events. Congratulations to Orion House who won the overall point score of the day.

Orion house not only won the Championship event point score, they also had the most students participate in the fun events as well.

Special thanks to our SHAPE Committee who put on an amazing BBQ throughout the day. All proceeds from this BBQ will go towards muchneeded funds for our students who represent The Gap State High School in a number of Sporting events throughout the year.

The Student Leaders’ Induction Ceremony was conducted on Tuesday 19 February. We wish our Student Leaders every success in 2019 and look forward to working with them to ensure that 2019 is both an enjoyable and rewarding year. The growth team did an amazing job spreading the love on Valentine’s Day last week, selling roses, broses and teddy bears, face painting and taking photos in the quad. The leaders will be bringing back many successful Gap traditions such as cross-country, trivia night, free dress days and the talent quest and will be incorporating a few new events such as spirit week and kindness week.

Our Year 7 to 12 students travelled to Lennox Heads for the annual Music Camp where they were immersed in the biggest music intensive of the year. Mixed-in with activities such as high-ropes, archery and beach activities, all students attended their ensemble rehearsals and specific tutorials each day, where music was learnt and perfected.

This week our Year 7’s

have loaded onto buses for Camp YMCA. Annual Year Level camps are a significant part of The Gap State High School’s Applied Positive Psychology program – (APP).

Camps provide a continuity and intensity that enhances learning and development in a range of capacities. The Year 7 Camp is also an excellent way for us to build group cohesion and identity for a new cohort of students.

During the camp students will participate in a range of adventure-based experiences and group initiatives.

Calm, positive, enthusiastic and productive classrooms are operating each day across the whole school. fellow students. Our Student Leader Investiture Ceremony and opening of the extended Multi-Purpose Building will be held on Wednesday 6 March from 1:30PM. We are very fortunate to have our local member for Cooper the Honourable Minister Kate Jones attend.

Our School Captains for 2019 are Madison Greig and Hugh Todman. Our Vice Captains are Sophie Wright and Jayden Fulwood.

I was impressed with the behaviour of our students and their support of each other as they raced. The students who represented our school were: Matthew, Sonny, Georgie, Hanna, Nicholas, Tully, Ryan, Eila, Isabel, Charlotte and Aden.

We also had four students who qualified to make the North West District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Regional trials.

Our parent information sessions were held during the first weeks of school.

The information sessions provided an invaluable opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the year ahead and the expectations of the year level and class.

Many parents also attended the Principal’s and P&C’s address. It was an opportunity for me to reiterate our school’s 2019 improvement agenda of writing, as well as outline new additional priorities. I also presented a new initiative and partnership with the P&C – The Advancing The Gap State School initiative that the school and the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) will embark on in order to revitalize the school campus, through provision of enhanced programs, facilities, learning and play environments. This campaign, involving targeted fundraising projects, is a tangible approach to support our school vision for both current and future students.

It seeks to establish strong partnerships with parents through a common goal, whilst maintaining the school’s high expectation of success for students. Throughout the year there will be opportunities to support, contribute and be a part of ‘Advancing the Gap State School.’ I am looking forward to our collective achievements in 2019.

Support Networks, growing communities supporting communities In 2011 a group of people in Samford came together with a single purpose: to see if they could help the elderly people in their community.

Eight years later, the Samford Support Network (SSN) is a registered charity and offers a diverse range of support to people of all ages, providing services such as transport, social networking, emergency support, a hardship fund and includes programs such as “keeping people in their homes” and most notably, is proudly fully funded by the community.

The special component of the system is that the SSN networks with everyone who is supporting the person in need of assistance, providing a fully integrated approach.

The SSN works with family members, government support such as Aged Care, local GPs, hospitals, health professionals, neighbours, NGOs, community groups and others and acts as the link between volunteers and professionals and ensures continuous support is offered to struggling community members, predominantly free of charge.

As an example of the community partnership in Samford the QAS Paramedics/ First Responders have been requested to ask if a person needs help when they arrive with the ambulance and they alert the SSN via the SupportLink system (an integrated Support Framework in the Federal Government Gateway). The SSN volunteer will pick people up from hospital, provide meals and check-ins as required and see what further support is required always keeping in mind government support in place or potential support available.

Recently the Samford Support Network obtained a call from a lonely lady in The Gap and the president of the Samford Support Network, Barbara Kienast, reached out to The Gap community via Facebook to find a friend

for this lady. As a result, on 13th February 2019, a group of 10 people met at The Gap Tavern and agreed that there was a very real need for a networked support system in the community and formed The Gap Support Network.

This new Support Network will focus on establishing transport support as its first priority.

Barbara Kienast, who was a finalist in the Australian of the Year - Queensland 2019 in the Local Hero category, has prepared a proposal to build Support Networks across Australia. She believes that this network approach has, and continues to help, so many people in Samford that it should be expanded.

This proposal is with Federal and State representatives at the moment with a view to securing funding to help

Ashgrove/The Gap Men’s Shed Men’s Shed has kicked off the new year full of enthusiasm in its recently refurbished premises.

This month we pay particular attention to one of our highly regarded activities, the Book Club, which meets eight times a year to analyse great male and female Australian writing. This is one of the few male book clubs in Brisbane. Sessions are relaxed, but structured, and focus questions are precirculated to guide discussion.

The West Brisbane Orchid Society commenced its 2019 program in January. This year’s theme is “How I Grow My Orchids”. January’s program featured an intriguing presentation on native cymbidium orchids by the Society’s President (who is also a very competent photographer as well as an expert on local native species), as well as a hands-on experience of mounting orchids on slabs. February’s meeting will continue the theme with a presentation by another successful local grower.

The Society’s Autumn Show will be held at the Auditorium, Brisbane Botanical Gardens (Mt Coot-tha) on Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 March.

POWERtalk Brisbane Art in Bark Association Central Starts the Brisbane Garden & Plant Expo Year on a High After a 6 week recess, POWERtalk Brisbane Central reconvened on the 5th Feb with 17 people in attendance.

Members and guests all joined in the fabulous evening of fun and learning and we were delighted to welcome three people into club membership.

POWERtalk Brisbane Central gather on the first and third Tuesdays each month at the Community Meeting Room in Grange Library to grow together in confidence whilst leading and speaking to a group. The run-on effects of this confidence help members shine in all areas of their lives. As a not-for-profit organisation, full membership is very affordable and costs approximately the equivalent of two coffees a month.

If you’d like to feel more confident, or if speaking to a group is a challenge for you, we invite you to join us as a guest, free of charge, for up to three meetings. We are a really supportive and nurturing group who love to help people to reach their goals.

Do you know what to do if someone has a seizure?

Purple Day for Epilepsy Awareness - March 26, 2019 For Purple Day 2019 (March 26) people with epilepsy are encouraging the Australian community to watch a short video illustrating the basics of seizure first aid in order to reduce the fear they may experience if someone has a seizure in front of them and requires assistance.

Around 250,000 Australians are currently diagnosed with epilepsy, and approximately 3.5% of the Australian population will experience this neurological disorder at some point in their lifetime. On a global scale, more than 65 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it the world’s most common serious brain disorder. However, despite these statistics, epilepsy remains shrouded in mystery and misconceptions for much of the community.

“Every year for Purple Day, Epilepsy Action works to bring epilepsy out of the shadows and increase awareness of the impact that this condition can have on individuals and families,” explains Carol Ireland, CEO of Epilepsy Action Australia.

“This year our focus is on highlighting the potentially life-saving benefits of seizure first aid. We believe having more friends, family members, colleagues and acquaintances know what to do if someone has a seizure will help make people with epilepsy feel more confident and secure carrying on with their day-to-day lives, knowing that if they do have a seizure, someone will be able to help them.”

Seizure First Aid – Key Steps • Stay with the person • Keep them safe, removing anything that could hurt them • Don’t try to restrain them • Don’t put anything in their mouth • Roll them onto their side once

Action for Purple Day will go towards life-changing programs and services which are delivered to people with epilepsy right across the country.

Amnesty International Local Groups Meet in Ashgrove and The Gap In 2019 Amnesty groups will meet regularly in The Gap and Ashgrove to write letters advocating for the rights of political prisoners worldwide. Amnesty International supplies all the background material that is necessary to understand these cases and either copy or formulate a letter.

The Gap group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 9am. The Ashgrove group meets fortnightly at 7.00pm on Thursdays.

In addition to these regular meetings, there are guest speakers and film screenings. The next film screening will be held at the Ashgrove library in March – the film is called “Mary meets Mohammad”. There is no admission charge, but donations are very welcome and there will also be the opportunity to sign petitions.

Native Bleeding Heart 3300 6304

If you are searching for a tall bushy shrub with interesting foliage to fill in a semi-shaded spot in the garden in frost-free areas, the native bleeding heart (Homalanthus nutans) may be the right plant.

The common name is derived from its roughly heart-shaped leaves that start off green but turn red just before falling. This rapidly growing plant reaches maturity within 24 months, with a thick canopy as wide as it is tall. This feature makes

it an ideal pioneer species for rainforest regeneration since it provides shade and humidity for secondary rainforest plants. The fallen leaves also form a deep litter layer that provides shelter and habitat for macro-invertebrates and their predators, thus enriching the soil.

Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

On Thursday, 4th April, Ann Blundell will be the guest speaker at the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club which meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall situated at the junction of Trundell and Wardell Streets. Ann will talk about Indoor and Patio Plants.

All types of plants were once outdoor plants, but now certain plants are referred to as indoor plants, because of their tolerance of certain temperatures and light conditions. For instance, the dark green leafed Rubber Plant or Ficus which comes from deep jungle conditions, does not need a lot of light, but plants with variegated leaves such as the Sansavera (Mother in law’s tongue), Maranta or Calanthea, require a fair amount of light.

You’ll find some indoor plants in pots have a dormant period in the colder months. They will look tired and faded, but a spell outdoors in a shaded sheltered position until the cold weather subsides will restore their lustre after new shoots are produced and nourished.

Many different plants grow well on the patio – flowering annuals, bromeliads, dwarf palms, ferns, even herbs and vegies.

The guest speaker will give more information about this.

Of course, whatever plants you have or wherever they are, all of them with need maintenance and nourishment. Also these plants are a great benefit to our well being because they purify the air we breathe.

This month garden beds need revitalising with plenty of organic material and pre-planting fertilizers, so that they are ready for winter vegetable and spring annual seedlings in April.

March is the time to plant strawberry runners too. Plan to plant vegetables and flowering annuals in the same garden beds as this will confuse garden pests.

This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month, except January. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome.

Indigenous to Queensland and New South Wales, the native bleeding heart is also found in Melanesia. In Samoa, it is called mamala tree and the local healers use the bark to treat hepatitis. Aboriginal

Australians and the early Chinese miners used its freshly crushed leaves to stop bleeding.

In more recent times a chemical in the bark, prostratin, is undergoing research for the treatment of HIV. This species is excellent for growing indoors. Pruning it to maintain a suitable height and shape, and the addition of slow release fertilizer for native plants will ensure several years of vigorous growth.

Each Thursday morning you have the opportunity to enter a time machine with the potential to take you back to the early decades of the 19th century; to a time when life moved a little slower. Dominated by a large military presence that once helped neutralise an invasion threat, seven or eight generations, largely made up of migrants from across the world, have helped provide the infrastructure that has taken us from the former Enoggera Shire to the group of thriving suburbs that now stretch from Newmarket to Cedar Creek. An infrastructure that has provided an ever growing population with construction, industry, commerce, law and order, schools, churches and a transport network all necessary components of our modern way of life.

This progress has been recorded by photos, documents and electronics, mostly provided by you the descendants of those pioneers, for us to put together and tell the story of our district.

This we are proud to do and we invite you to our research centre in the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street to see for yourself what we have achieved. SOWN History Book Launch - 24 March 2019 Members and friends of Save Our Waterways Now are invited to the launch of a new book called SOWN: Caring for Enoggera Catchment 19942019.

The launch will take place on Sunday 24 March from 2pm to 5pm at the Old Newmarket Bowls Club in Ashgrove Avenue at Newmarket.

This venue is close to some of the initial plantings on Enoggera Creek and where SOWN veteran, Trevor Ozanne, is still doing revegetation work.

President John Abbott said the book records the organisation’s history.

“During this year we want to recall and celebrate our achievements and look towards the future,” John said.

SOWN: Caring for Enoggera Catchment 19942019 will be published as an electronic document and in hard copy form.

It discusses how SOWN started, past and present projects, and profiles 30 local bushcare groups and sites.

The 236-page A4 book, with more than 300 fullcolour photographs, has been prepared by ToadShow’s Anne Jones and Robert Whyte with additional photography by Mark Crocker.

At the launch, Anne Jones and Robert Whyte will share the inspiring stories and photos that make up the book.

“The stories in the book have the common theme of bringing nature back to our creeks,” Anne said.

The Gap Garden Club Inc. Est 1963 The first meeting for the year was held on Tuesday 26th February, after our Christmas-New Year break.

Members were looking for ideas to keep their struggling gardens going in the long hot summer break. Our guest speaker Jenece Drake gave us some ideas for our gardens with her informative talk - More Plants, Propogating from Seed and Cuttings.

We look forward to another busy and informative year ahead -the committee has been busy organising interesting guest speakers, visits to members’ gardens, monthly field trips to gardens and nurseries and places of interest, arranging our involvement in the QCGC April A-Fair and planning a tour to Adelaide in October.

Our field trip in March will be to the Buderim area where we will visit private gardens and nurseries, and hope for cooler weather.

Our March meeting on Tuesday 26th is our Annual General Meeting and members are reminded that annual subscription of $30 is now due.

Currently, our Membership is closed, but a waiting list is available to anyone interested in joining.

Reflections...

The long festive season leading up to Christmas Day and the month of January being school holidays and break time for many workers, those like me in the older age bracket have enjoyed a quiet restful time.

Now learning to live with restricted mobility, a great pleasure in life is reading a good book. A Christmas gift from my wife was the book by Peter Fitzsimons “Mutiny on the Bounty” was a thoroughly engaging book and when I began reading it, very difficult to put down! The amount of time and effort this author had his researcher, Angus Fitzsimons his cousin, delve into was huge, and the finished story is riveting. Last year, his book “Burke and Wills” was also absorbing.

Not one but on five o c c a s i o n s l a t e l y, w h e n shopping, I have been approached by a person who in the past has known me from my time at Taylor Range Country Club or by children have been taught to swim by a family member. Saying ‘hello’ is a great gesture with often a question asked: “How has The Gap changed?”

LIving on Moggill Road (place of lizards) as a young child and later in Payne Road, I remember the only road with paving was Waterworks Road. Bennetts Road, Payne and Paten Roads, Settlement and School Roads and Hilder Road were unsealed dirt roads, with areas washed away where water crossed and those with a downward slope, often slippery with a surface of granules or deco or in some parts, clay - a definite slide when wet!

Those early days would see farmers wives pushing a pram with the kids in as they set about to visit a friend on another property.

These enduring and lasting

friendships are now both an echo of the past.

Most farms had access to some creek or pool and warm summer days would see many visits. While Sheperd’s Pool, at the rear of the now Payne Road State School, and said to be five metres deep, the area to the west of School Road Bridge was a clear sandy bottomed pool in parts, with blue and yellow water lilies and a beautiful grassed lawn bank. It was here, on some Sunday afternoons, entertainment took place, sometimes being instrumental players or singers and some of the Rane brothers who lived on Moggill Road all oiled up and having wrestling matches on a huge, spread-out tarpaulin.

Commencing in August 1937 at the two-room Gap State School, then situated on the corner of Waterworks and School Roads, it is hard to comprehend the area now contains Payne Road State School, Hilder Road State School, St Peter Chanel, Mater Dei and the huge Gap State High School, with its wide range of subjects now available to modern students. The old Gap School was moved to the current location on the corner of Settlement and Waterworks Roads and is now an enormous complex for primary school students.

As young kids, we did see some ugly sights. With all power-lines being aboveground, it was regular to see bats hanging off the live lines electrocuted. Some falling to the ground and stinking something dreadful. Being just some of the many thousand bats who left their roost at the rear of the Reservoir each evening, making their way to the many fruit orchards in the Sunnybank area.

remember them being in the following spots: St John’s Wood bridge, Greenlanes Road, Bennett Road, corner of Payne Road, Walton Bridge and the corners of Settlement and Hilder Roads with the last at the toll gates above the Reservoir. Though only dim, these lights attracted moths and insects which in turn seemed like the manor table to our local owl population which were also attracted to the headlights of the few vehicles in the area and greatly led to their decimation.

All this was good picking for the local crows, who flew the bitumen strip in search of an early breakfast. A few of them in no hurry to leave a good feed and flying away too late they sometimes became victims themselves. Goanna and snakes - mostly carpet

snakes - were often a victim of road-kill. A rare sight, and only seen by me on two occasions, was a conga line of fine hairy covered caterpillars who linked up and travelled head to tail in a long line, up to four to six metres in length, before ascending into a low scrub wattle tree and gathering leaves around them to form a ball of tight leaves. I can recall an old guy telling me all those years ago “They can pass over a razor without a cut!”

Other species I saw not making it across a road or killed by the dazzling headlights of a car were possums, wallabies, bandicoots and the occasional echidna. Sighting of a koala in the district was rare and then only well back in the hills. I guess they were wary of our local dog population.

Newmarket Bocce Club President Tony Giacoboni adjudicating a game of bocce at a corporate work party 2018 - fun for all!

They say that the game of bocce goes back to the time of the ancient Romans. For many years bocce was played as a social recreation. In the 1950’s, it became an organised sport and part of ethnic Australia’s social culture. However, today recreational bocce is still played in back yards and parks by many cultures.

There is only one registered Bocce club left in Brisbane, being the Newmarket Bocce Club (NBC) which has four international standard playing courts. The Club is situated at 23 Foster Street Newmarket (behind the “City Church”). This club was established in 1972 and was incorporated in 2007 under its current name. It is a multicultural club.

I love the game because it is a game of skill, being able to accurately bowl a ball to take the shot from your opponent. It is not a physical game but can be lively, providing fun to people of all ages and you only need minimal equipment, a set of Bocce balls and a club polo shirt and off you go, you’re all set!

It is also a forum to meet people, make friends and enjoy a drink during and/or after the game.

The club has social games on Wednesday evening; competitive and social games on Friday evenings and Sundays from 1pm. It’s a great mid-week break away from work and the hustle and bustle of life. We are looking at the other forms of bocce that can be played.

It’s very exciting. For example, the feasibility of Beach Bocce, should be fun!

You have heard no doubt of Bare Foot Bowls, well we have something similar, but you must wear flat soled shoes. You can hire the courts for work or corporate events, birthday parties etc.

It’s a lot of fun. BYO drinks and food, we can cook it up for you and we also have members on hand to guide through the game.

The club welcomes all cultures to play Bocce, and all ages - young and old.
