EDITOR'S NOTE

Ever since moving upstate, I’m fully invested in the seasons’ changes. I learned to let go with autumn’s falling leaves, I cozied up and savored warmth as the winter winds howled around me, and I feel the fresh start as the temperature outside start to rise and daffodils shyly peek out from moist soil, charming us with their bright color and freshness.

But somehow, amid the birds’ cheerful chirping, and the bunnies’ and chipmunks’ return, it isn’t solely anticipation that I experience. As our world comes out of winter hibernation, I find that I too, am squinting at the glaring sunlight and wondering where time has gone.

It isn’t by accident that the days leading up to Matan Torah, when we are supposed to be motivated to grow and improve, occur in the spring. Invariably, this is the season of the inexplicable antsy feeling, a clawing sensation, as if we are psychically attempting to grab hold of life itself. It’s been dubbed spring fever, this longing to open up the windows to our souls and let ourselves breathe the glorious bliss, the yearning to make the current moment matter more, and the anticipation and anxiety for what the future holds.

It should be pure happiness that we experience, and yet there’s this discomfiting irritability of a life passing too fast. Somehow, spring

fever has a sense of déjà vu, mockingly reminding us that we are at this point, again.

And suddenly, the relentless march of time feels heavy, with each passing moment a step further from what was. But when viewed through the lens of bitachon and the promise of Geulah, time transforms from a depleting force into a vessel carrying us toward that sweeter tomorrow.

Hers is not merely a story of the miraculous medicinal powers of Hashem’s natural world; it is a story of not giving in, not giving up— and not allowing others to make all the decisions.

Instead of a thief stealing moments, time becomes the very current that propels us toward the promised future. Each sunrise isn’t just the start of another day, but a step closer to the fulfillment of that ancient hope. The passage of years isn’t a lament for what’s lost, but a patient unfolding of the Divine plan.

Like a planted seed, the time that passes isn’t a period of decay, but a necessary stage for growth. We don’t despair as the days go by; rather, we anticipate the eventual blossoming. Our emunah allows us to see beyond the immediate moment, to perceive the promise inherent in the unfolding future.

It reframes time not as an ending, but as a continuous becoming.

Although time only marches forward, our stories are best told backward. Retrospectively, we see the beginning, middle, and end.

We can recognize cause and effect.

We can see the bigger, more complete, picture.

In our Medical Saga this month, you will read the story of Mrs. Hanna Roth, an indomitable woman who would not take her diagnosis lying down. Precious days were passing, and she saw it as her responsibility to not allow life to

We’ve all been granted the ability and intellect to read and learn, to fight for our lives, to proactively choose to embrace our precious moments here on Earth and make them count. We know that it isn’t up to us to determine what will happen in the future, but it is undoubtedly our choice to decide what we will do in the present.

Mrs. Roth told me about her frustration at her failed attempts to spread the word. Eager to offer her priceless from-the-trenches expertise, she was disappointed and disheartened to find the general public mostly indifferent. To be fair, it is a whole lot easier, and certainly more common, to throw our hands in the air and insist that getting involved in the decisions regarding healthcare is beyond the scope of our responsibilities.

But it isn’t.

We were only given one life and each day is a precious gift. It is our responsibility to protect and invest in our future.

In this issue, we explore the gift of the priceless, irretrievable passage of time. The goal, though, is not to view the ticking clock as a somber reminder of life slipping away. Rather, as we count the omer aloud, we recognize that the rhythmic beat of the march of time is counting up toward a brighter reality.

There’s Light Ahead Issue #110: Health News Roundup In Health News Roundup, there was a discussion about light therapy for treatment of Alzheimer’s. On the topic of Alzheimer’s, I would like to add something I heard on Del Bigtree’s podcast, Highwire Plus. A proven remedy for depression and Alzheimer’s is to take a lithium supplement, being cautious not to take too much. I use lithium by Life Extension, which is only 1,000 mcg (1 ml). This dose is safe and potent, but too weak to have any negative side effects.

If You Know, You Know Issue #110: Well Asked I greatly enjoyed your Pesach magazine. In Well Asked, Vichna replies to a woman who says her in-laws view her as less than them. Vichna

says, “If your family has clearly said to you, ‘You are inferior,’…speak to a rav to find out [whether there is] any obligation to remain in contact with them.”

From personal experience I can state with certainty that people don’t have to spell out how they view you. When you’re around individuals with a superiority complex, you know it.

Some people are capable of making others feel unwelcome by subtly insulting them (sometimes with backhanded compliments), talking down to them, or simply ignoring them.

And not everyone stays in contact with their family because of obligation or even because they hope things will improve. Sometimes people keep in contact with their unwelcoming and unkind family because they want their kids to have a normal childhood, which includes grandparents and cousins.

The challenge is precisely as the questioner posed. How do we spend time together, without us—and even more so, our kids—feeling like unwelcoming pariahs? I appreciated the latter part of the answer, where Vichna reminds us to not allow any human to determine our value. It

Quick Question Question: Can you offer any insight as to why Zyrtec isn’t working for my allergies? I can’t go to work, and I can barely breathe. My eyes and nose are running, and I am sneezing nonstop. My doctor is recommending steroids, and I’m at my wit’s end. Is there anything at all you can suggest?

Answer: In addition to allergy medication, consult with a homeopath and take the recommended remedies; they help amazingly well. You can also try Sarno’s method, which may help your aggravating symptoms to subside somewhat.

It’s possible that the medication is ineffective because there are so many different symptoms to be targeted. Every person reacts differently to allergies; some have a difficult time breathing, some sneeze, and others cough or have watery or itchy eyes and nose. We can’t expect one medication to work for everybody.

Homeopathy is more individualized and treats many different symptoms quickly and safely, especially for kids who are suffering from allergies.

Recognize Increased Risks Issue #110: The Unheard Heart Thank you for bringing attention to the correlation between diabetes and cardiac disease. I also appreciated the cautionary mention that all women have to be conscientious about their increased cardiac risk.

But in addition to women in general, it is important to note that women who are up to six months postpartum are at an even greater risk, yet they all too often ignore their symptoms or have others dismiss them as insignificant or “normal.”

Postpartum women often deal with anxiety due to the very nature of their hormonal state, and I do not wish to exacerbate it. But it must be noted that at this stage, these women have an increased predisposition to cardiac and other issues. Don’t dismiss lightheadedness, chest pain, or abdominal pain as simply par for the course. Too many have done so, with tragic outcomes. If something feels off, recognize your vulnerable state and call Hatzolah.

Take Heart Issue #110: The Unheard Heart Hidden heart attacks are indeed a risk if you already have complications. Every person with diabetes, specifically type 1 diabetes, should have their blood vessels checked annually, even if the blood glucose control is excellent.

That said, I need to note a few things to keep in mind after reading the story, since it can sound disheartening and terrifying to other people with diabetes. Note that I am not saying you shouldn’t be careful, but due to the constant need for blood glucose management, people with diabetes are much more prone to anxiety and depression, so I suppose we are already more susceptible to getting scared from reading

The present reality is more reassuring on other fronts as well. So while diabetes may indeed increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, it does not have to, at least not to a large extent. We can do something about it. We aren’t helpless. Chazak ve’ametz!

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai on Temptation in This Era

The Sifri, a commentary on the Chumash compiled by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, speaks in no uncertain terms about the consequences of an unhealthy relationship with food. In the song of Haazinu, the Torah writes, “Vayishman yeshurun vayive’at—[The Jewish People] became fat and kicked” (Devarim 32:15).

The Sifri uses this verse as a foundation for comparing how many of the horrific downfalls in our history were caused by the same behavior—a desire for opulence and indulgence in the temporal physical pleasures of this world. Instead of using them as a vehicle for appropriate enjoyment and spiritual elevation, we allowed our desires for excess to take center stage, even under the guise of doing mitzvos and celebrating joyous events.

The Sifri writes that just like the generation of Mashiach will be spiritually compromised by the deviant behavior referred to in the verse in Haazinu, so too, the following seminal historical tragedies were rooted in the same source: (1) the generation of the flood, (2) the Tower of Bavel, (3) the people of Sodom, (4) the complaints of the Jews in the desert, and (5) the exile

of the ten tribes of Israel.

As we wrote previously regarding Purim (Megillah 12a), Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his students understood that the reason the Jewish People were subject to the decree of extermination at the hands of Haman “le’hashmid le’harog ule’abed es kol hayehudim—to destroy, to slay, and to exterminate all the Jews” was because of their participation in the grand feast of King Achashveirosh. This display of their unmitigated investment in physical indulgence was completely contrary to the core value of being a Jew. The Sifri in Parashas Eikev teaches that the progression from enjoying excess and extravagance to completely forgetting about Hashem and forgoing a spiritual life is a sudden and slippery slope: “And you will eat and be satisfied. Beware lest your heart be seduced and you turn astray and serve other gods and bow to them. Then the wrath of Hashem will blaze against you” (Devarim 11:15– 17, Krias Shema).

So too, the Sifri explains, regarding the sin of the Golden Calf: “The people sat to eat and drink, and they got up to revel…

the way that I have commanded them” (Shemos 32:6, 8).

Harav Yitzchok Sorotzkin shlita expounds extensively on this idea. He asks how Klal Yisrael could turn their back on Hashem and fall to the level of avodah zarah so soon after having received the Torah. He answers that their hearts craved and lusted after the pleasures of Olam Hazeh. Rav Sorotzkin explains, based on the Sifri, that when a Jew turns away from Torah, he becomes engulfed in a sea of ta’avah that ultimately leads to avodah zarah. The craving for material pleasures taints his hashkafos until he falls prey to all the “isms” that creep up over history.

According to Rav Sorotzkin, the Sifri prophesized more than a thousand years ago about the times of Mashiach and how our generation would be saturated with materialism. Indeed, we see people losing the enjoyment of their avodas Hashem, and the youth from even the best homes turning away from Torah.

Rav Sorotzkin explains that “it is incumbent on parents and teachers…to teach kids while they are young not to get used to Olam Hazeh.” We have a different tachlis in life than those

in the secular world and we must emphasize the importance of not giving in to the desire for gashmiyus. Our purpose is to live a life of Torah and mitzvos, and the less we focus on Olam Hazeh, the greater simchah we will have in our avodas Hashem.

The Vilna Gaon says that the neshamah of a Jew craves ruchniyus, and if he doesn’t get used to gashmiyus when he is young, he will naturally crave spirituality. When we get used to fleeting pleasures, we extinguish that fire and can’t appreciate the everlasting joy of learning Gemara or doing a mitzvah.

As Rav Sorotzkin emphasizes, our bubbies and zeidies had barely the shirts on their backs, but they didn’t feel deprived.

It is our generation, blessed with plenty of gashmiyus, that struggles to have simchas hachayim. He questions our need to have everything the non-Jews have—the weddings we make that overflow with delicacies—and urges us to daven to Hashem to help us live a Torah lifestyle in which we and our children are zocheh find simchah in our avodas Hashem.

Certainly, a message very relevant for our time, as we count up in our aliyah toward Matan Torah.

Big Time, Little Time

I’m sitting in my new home in Yerushalayim, staring at my watch in great anticipation.

By the time I’m about halfway through writing this piece, something will have happened in my life that has never happened at any time before. You see, eight days ago, a little boy was born in Manchester, England. As the mother of that little boy is my granddaughter, I became for the first time ever, an elter-zeidy, or as I discovered it’s called in modern Hebrew, a saba rabbah.

Someone pointed out that it is only in very recent times that elter-bubbies and zeidies have become quite commonplace.

That’s because it’s only in the very recent past that life expectancy has increased so much that a person could be here, waiting anxiously as I am, to hear what a little great-grandson (or great-granddaughter) will be called.

When Hashem created the world, He created time. A “clock”—or rather “clocks”— started ticking across the universe. Countless planets began to turn on their axes, stars began twinkling, and our world began its repetitive elliptical orbit around the sun. It also meant that countless Jewish souls would come to the world.

The funny thing is that when we are young, we generally pay little attention to time. For children, time seems to move very slowly and, at least to our young eyes, the changes it brings in us emerge imperceptibly. There simply appears to be too much time when we are children. Summer days in particular seem to go on forever and consequently, we feel that we will too.

It’s easy to understand how fleeting time is if we look at those numbers slightly differently and examine instead how many days we have.

The closer we get to zeidy status and certainly to joining the elter-zeidy club, time doesn’t seem so relaxed and unhurried.

Time seems instead to be insistent, impatient, and demanding.

It knows after all, how much of it you have been allotted since the moment your soul arrived in this world. As David Hamelech notes in Tehillim 80:10, “The years of our lives are seventy years or eighty and they are filled with struggle and delusion and they quickly van-

At age twenty, we have already used up 7,305 days from those seventy years, so we only have 18,262.5 days left.

The funny thing is that when we are young, we generally pay little attention to time.

At thirty years, we have only 14,610 days to go.

Forty years leaves us only 10,957.5 days.

Fifty years leaves a mere 7,305 days.

At sixty years, we have 3,652.5 days left and at seventy years… times up!* Of course, we might get an additional 3,652.5 days if we reach eighty, but all this shows

how misguided was our youthful perception of time moving slowly and of us living forever.

The words of David’s son Shlomo Hamelech about time in Koheles 3:2 are among the most famous on the subject.

He takes us even deeper into what happens in the seventy or eighty years his father talked about: “There is a zeman [time] and an eis [era] for everything under the heavens. A time to live and a time to die…a time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to eulogize and a time to dance…A time to hate and a time to love, a time for war and a time of peace.”

And because we are Jews, it’s possible that we will all experience the different times Shlomo Hamelech talks about—both positive and negative, 28 in all—during our own lives.

A few days before Pesach, we went to one of Yerushalayim’s biggest electrical stores to buy a handheld vacuum cleaner.

We wanted the kind that works with a battery that pops out and is recharged overnight; not one with a cord.

A woman waiting in the line turned to my wife and pointed at a white-haired man sitting near the register. I had noticed him and wondered why he was sitting there alone. I thought he might have some medical condition that made it hard for him to stand for too long or perhaps he was waiting for his wife to pay.

He sat perfectly still, staring ahead with hollow eyes and an empty expression. He reminded me of the kind of electrical appliance we wanted to buy—waiting for its battery to

be recharged and replaced so it could come to life. That thought and metaphor turned out to be more accurate than I could have imagined.

The whispered message to my wife was that this man’s son is being held captive in Gaza.

That whisper passed along the line.

Someone who heard it left the people waiting to pay and approached the old fellow. I couldn’t overhear what he said but the father of the kidnapped son stood up and the man enfolded him in a hug. When our turn came, my wife told me to give him a hug too, as well as a berachah.

“A time for war.”

Later that night, we drove to the engagement of the son of one of my closest talmidim.

We hadn’t seen each other for a very long time and the talmid, his son, and I danced joyously together for a very long time.

“A time to dance.”

The whispered message was that this man’s son is being held captive in Gaza.

The Maharal says that the difference between the two words “zeman” and “eis” is that a zeman is a specific and exact time. It refers to something that happens precisely at a given moment, for example 9:30 p.m.

That’s the zeman a train leaves a station. It cannot leave a minute before or after; only that exact time will do.

An eis refers to an era or epoch. That’s a period of time, for example the Second World War. It lasted five years from 1939 to 1945. Or the period from the attacks of October 7, 2023 until now.

Rabbi Dessler zt”l quotes Rav Tzvi Hirsch Brodie of Kelm who says, “It’s not that time passes over a man…but that man passes through the times.” The intriguing part of Rav Broide’s statement is his choice of the word “times” in the plural.

I think of it as “Big Time” and “Little Time,” and it is itim that contain events that tend to make history.

Of course, we pass through “little times” like personal simchas or losses.

Yet it is the “big times” that offer a kehillah, a people, or the entire world the opportunity to stop and consider what message Hashem is sending us and why it had to be delivered so dramatically and over such a long period.

That is particularly true after these big times come to an end. We can then catch our breath and search for meaning.

Pesach was certainly a big time. Its whole point and its message enabled us to move to the next big time, the seven-week preparation period we needed to arrive at the biggest time of all, coming face-to-face, kevayachol, with the Borei Olam at a little moun-

tain called Sinai.

It was only when that eis was over that we could look back and see the whole picture and learn the message it was meant to teach us.

When we failed to learn that lesson— or rather—the great talmidei chachamim and students of arguably the Talmud’s greatest rabbi, Rabbi Akiva, failed to learn it, another time was required.

This was the eis of sefiras ha’omer.

Every one of Rabbi Akiva’s talmidim died because “shelo nahagu kavod zeh le’zeh—they didn’t value and honor each other.”

That failure meant they hadn’t truly grasped the entire point of the eis of

yetzias Mitzrayim, followed by seven weeks of hachanah and the giving of the Torah.

What was this point? It was that each of the 600,000 letters of the Torah stands for a Jewish soul, each of which has its own clock that ticks for the time it needs to fulfill its tachlis. And that is something that’s definitely worthy of kavod…from all of us. *There are an estimated 722,000 centenarians (people aged 100 or older) alive in the world today, with roughly 108,000 in the United States.

Inarguably, longevity is a gift granted from Shamayim. It is comforting to note that the gift of “bonus years” graces increasingly more people, with each passing year. Ad meah ve’esrim…

The Melatonin Seesaw Continues A small clinical trial published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine suggests that melatonin supplementation may help counteract DNA damage linked to night shift work by enhancing the body’s ability to repair it. Night shift workers experience suppressed nighttime production of melatonin, a key hormone regulating the body’s internal clock. This suppression weakens the body’s ability to repair DNA damage—a natural byproduct of cellular processes—potentially increasing the risk of certain cancers.

To investigate whether melatonin supplementation could mitigate this damage by improving DNA repair, the researchers conducted a study involving 40 night shift workers. Half the participants were randomly assigned to a daily 3 mg melatonin pill taken with food and an hour before going to sleep during the day for four consecutive weeks.

The other half were randomly assigned to a 3 mg dummy pill following the same schedule. Levels of 8-OHdG, which is an indicator of DNA damage repair capacity, were higher in the group that took the melatonin supplement. This study has proven that melatonin supplementation may prove to be a viable intervention strategy to reduce the likelihood of cancer among night shift workers. Researchers add: “Assessing longterm efficacy is critical since those who work night shifts for many years would need to consistently consume melatonin supplements over that time frame to maximize the potential cancer prevention benefits.”

Caffeine and Cognition A new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology has revealed that the way caffeine impacts thinking skills is not just about how much coffee a person drinks, but also about their genes. Researchers discovered that people with genes for fast caffeine processing performed differently on cognitive tests depending on their caffeine consumption levels, particularly in tasks involving emotion recognition and complex thinking. This suggests that our genetic makeup plays a significant role in how we respond to caffeine’s effects on our brainpower. Scientists have long been interested in understanding how different substances affect our cognitive abilities, from students trying to boost their study sessions to older adults hoping to maintain sharp minds. Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, and many other drinks, is the most commonly used stimulant in the world and is often considered a potential brain enhancer. While it’s known that caffeine can improve simple mental tasks like paying attention and reacting quickly, its effects on more complex abilities like decision-making are less clear. The researchers behind the new study wanted to investigate how an individual’s genes, specifically those related to caffeine processing, interact with their usual caffeine consumption to affect various aspects of their cognitive abilities in everyday life.

The “Stop Eating” Switch

Cheese Isn’t Just Food Fermented foods, including yogurt and cheese, are among the most widely consumed dietary components.

But these sour and savory foods are not just nice condiments or great dairy options; they are so much more.

Researchers have found that the specific lactic acid bacteria in cheese can be easily transferred to the human gut, exerting fantastic positive effects. While studies had explored the health effects of cheese intake, its impact on gut health had not yet been exposed. In this new study, researchers evaluated the effects of cheese intake on gut microbiota using an in vitro gut environment– simulating medium (GESM). This is a culture medium designed to mimic the complex conditions found within the human gut, allowing researchers to study the gut microbiota in a controlled in vitro environment. Fifteen cheeses were cultivated in GESM for 16 hours, followed by DNA extraction. In the extraction, researchers identified three expression clusters (EXC1–EXC3), with EXC2 being the most prevalent. Further analysis of these clusters revealed 62 enzyme-coding genes related to oxidative stress protection, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) biosynthesis, inflammation reduction, and vitamin production. That’s a lot of goodness in one package of cheese! Overall, the results underscore the significance of fermented foods in shaping gut microbiota and promoting human health.

Columbia scientists have discovered specialized neurons in the brains of mice that signal the animals to stop eating. While many feeding circuits in the brain are known to regulate food intake, the neurons within these circuits do not make the final decision to stop eating. The newly identified neurons, a previously unknown component of these circuits, are located in the brain stem—the oldest part of the vertebrate brain. This discovery could pave the way for new treatments for obesity. “These neurons are unlike any other neuron involved in regulating satiation,” says Alexander Nectow, a physician-scientist at Columbia University who led the research. To see how the neurons influenced eating, the researchers engineered the neurons so they could be turned on and off by the researcher, with light. When the neurons were activated by the light, the mice ate much smaller meals. The intensity of the activation determined how quickly animals stopped eating. Interestingly, these neurons don’t just signal an immediate stop; they help the mice to slow down their eating gradually. “We think it’s a major new entry point to understanding what it means to be full, how that comes about, and how that is leveraged to end a meal,” Nectow adds. “And we hope that it could be used for obesity therapies down the road.”

Five Ways to Reduce Microplastics in Your Body Your brain is 99.5 percent brain tissue—but the rest? Plastic. That’s the unsettling takeaway from a new study that found microplastics in human brains at far higher levels than other organs. Even more troubling, these tiny particles are accumulating rapidly, having increased 50 percent over the past eight years. On the heels of this shocking new study, experts say there are a few ways to limit exposure and consumption of these dangerous specks. Previous research suggested that humans consume a credit card’s worth of plastic every week on average, and the pesky particles—which are less than 5 millimeters long—have been found in the oceans and clouds. Though microplastics may be nearly impossible to completely avoid, experts say there are steps you can take to limit your exposure. The five main ways are as follows: Don’t drink from plastic water bottles, choose the paper or loose-leaf tea bags, boil and filter tap water, don’t use plastic cutting boards, and never microwave plastic containers. Research has shown that microwaving plastic food containers can release massive numbers of plastic particles—in some cases, more than 2 billion nanoplastics and 4 million microplastics per square centimeter of container within 3 minutes of microwave heating.

The Bad Guy: Sugar Sugar substitutes such as xylitol and artificial sweeteners show up in many diets and “low-calorie” products, promoted as a way to help people enjoy sweet flavors without the usual calories. Some people choose them to help manage weight goals or reduce daily sugar intake. Others look for sugar-free snacks to limit changes in blood glucose. Their popularity reflects a common desire to avoid sugar-related pitfalls. Yet concerns continue to surface about how these substances may affect overall health. In recent research, it was found that individuals with higher xylitol levels appeared to have an increased likelihood of experiencing serious cardiac-related events over the following few years. Since these trends emerged in people already facing cardiovascular issues, the question has become whether these substances could pose added risks. While xylitol and similar substances fit the profile for reduced-calorie sweetening, this latest work suggests that they merit deeper research to see how they interact with blood and overall heart function in various groups. In light of the new data, there are suggestions for caution, particularly if a person has conditions linked to thrombosis or other cardiac complications. It seems that choosing sugar-sweetened treats occasionally and in small amounts would be preferable to consuming drinks and foods sweetened with these artificial sugar alcohols, especially for people at elevated risk of heart disease.

Jog My Memory A new study challenges the long-held belief that infants cannot form memories. Researchers found that babies as young as 12 months can encode memories, suggesting that infantile amnesia, the inability to recall early childhood experiences, is more likely due to retrieval failures than an inability to form memories in the first place. Despite infancy being a time of rapid learning, most people cannot remember events from their first three years of life. This phenomenon has puzzled scientists for years. One theory suggests that this is because the hippocampus, a brain region essential for episodic memory, is not fully developed during infancy. To investigate this, researchers used fMRI to scan the brains of infants aged 4 to 25 months while they completed a memory task. The task, adapted from a method commonly used in adult studies, involved showing infants images of faces, scenes, and objects, followed by a memory test based on preferential looking, all conducted during neuroimaging. The results showed that by around 12 months, the infant hippocampus can encode individual memories. This finding provides strong evidence that the ability to form memories begins in infancy. According to the researchers, the presence of memory-encoding mechanisms, despite the temporary nature of these memories, supports the idea that infantile amnesia is primarily due to retrieval failures rather than an inability to create memories.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Announces Ban on Artificial Food Dyes Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be delivering on a campaign promise to ban artificial food dyes by announcing the phasing out of eight petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the nation’s food supply. These dyes are commonly used in thousands of products marketed to kids, including candy, breakfast cereals, and soda, giving the products bright, vibrant hues. Kennedy has railed against Big Food and Big Pharma and blamed the nation’s “chronic disease epidemic” on additives and junk food as part of his Make America Healthy Again agenda. “If food executives want to include petroleum in their food, they should do so for themselves,” says Kennedy. “For too long, some food producers have been feeding American children petroleum-based chemicals without their parents’ knowledge or consent.” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said the FDA will authorize four new food dyes it says are derived from natural sources in the coming weeks.

The FDA had approved 36 food dyes, nine of which are artificial and made from petroleum.

The others are derived from natural sources, like vegetables. Other countries, like Canada, have their foods colored with natural ingredients like concentrated carrot juice, watermelon juice, and blueberry juice. The FDA had allowed US companies to use artificial dyes, including Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, and Blue 2. All of these artificial dyes have been linked to various chronic conditions and are now, on account of Kennedy, being phased out with a deadline set at the end of the year. “The food our kids are eating today is not really food. It’s food-like substances,” he said. ““We’re going to do real science, and we’re gonna do science precisely on the issues that Americans care about: making sure their kids are getting food that isn’t poisonous.”

Our day begins with Modeh Ani, in which we thank Hashem for our renewed existence, and ends with Shema, an introspective review in the evening, when we give thanks for the day that has passed and recognize the blessings we’ve encountered.

In sefiras ha’omer, we are given the mitzvah of counting aloud and marking the passage of each irretrievable day. Is the purpose of counting aloud to make us more aware of the days passing us by? Time is so crucial—so precious a commodity—yet too often we fail to give adequate thought to the fleeting opportunities it offers for us to accomplish and achieve.

Through time we witness the growth of little children, we get to marvel at the human body’s capacity for healing, and we tentatively discover our ability to find comfort and move on.

Time is the ultimate teacher; she allows us to acquire mastery, gain awareness, and develop understanding.

Time is also said to be a healer. As with many forms of medicine, she often leaves a bitter aftertaste—especially when we watch this great treasure slip away, despite our intense desire to hold on. But that, right there, makes it infinitely more precious!

The Time Is Now Life comes rushing at us with never-ending responsibilities.

We easily get caught up in the busyness of life and mistake our doing for being. We feel good knowing we’ve accomplished, but in the process, we might be giving up our day for something menial that all too often will not matter tomorrow.

“I bought my kids the best games,” Ruchama says. “I cooked elaborate and complicated dinners. We used to

vacation twice a year, with all the planning and stress that entailed. But my kids just have vague recollections of their loaded game closets or the locations we visited. They do remember the few times we actually played the games.

They have clearer, and more positive, memories of the time we took a road trip instead of a plane ride because I was more relaxed. And they taught me, too late, that kids don’t need large living; they need large loving.”

If we hustle through the bustle of life, constantly stressing about the imminent future without real acceptance of the present, we aren’t really living.

After all, being stranded at the airport is not the same as flying, owning a book is not the same as reading it, and having the ingredients for a gourmet meal is not the same as eating it. And to bring the point home—being alive is not the same as living.

Maximize the Moment Trying to keep a toddler in bed in the morning is a near impossibility. As soon as their little peepers pop open they’re ready to run, eager to explore and embrace every element of their environment. They might not be able to articulate—or even formulate—the thought, but they instinctively feel that life is just too exciting, filled with too many possibilities, to squander it away in bed.

Mastery Takes Time But time isn’t only our present; it also forms our future. In the simplest and most obvious way, our greatest life lessons can only be learned with time.

There is great benefit to

learning when we are younger, when our brains are still malleable and readily absorb everything—for better or worse. Even then, the lessons are not instantaneous and require practice for best retention, but ultimately, it is time and repetition that will make the lessons stick.

“I took a lengthy course before starting my job and I had wonderful training,” Shani shares. “I felt confident when I started working. Interestingly, it wasn’t that I made mistakes, but I couldn’t even conceive of the more practical or preferable solutions until I

was on the job for two weeks, and the processes didn’t come to me instinctively until I was doing the work for considerably longer. Many bosses believe some positions don’t require much knowledge and insist they can have inexperienced employees for lower wages, but they don’t realize the benefit long-term employees offer—even when it doesn’t appear that they’re working as hard. They might not be, but through experience they can still do a better job than the hardworking novice.”

“Parenting is a role we can only grow into,” Chedva says.

“No amount of parenting books and classes could have given me the awareness and instincts I picked up over time.

Planting Perennials “Birthdays are meant to be celebratory events,” Sarala says, “but I found that each year I’d get sadder with the realization that another year had passed, and I often couldn’t point to one substantial change in my life. A few years back, I started a ‘This Year’ list.

Each year on my birthday, after reviewing last year’s list, I create a new one. Some of the accomplishments are small, some large, but each one is something I can be proud of.

I’ve memorized some kapitlach of Tehillim, I’ve been consistent about learning shemiras halashon every day, and perhaps more importantly, I smile more. It took effort, but now it’s a middah, a habit I’m proud of. I’m sure everyone has their own goals and these might not seem like much, but had I not purposefully invested this time building these traits, I wouldn’t have had anything to show for the year that just passed.”

Time Is the Present It is only in the moments when we are fully present that we truly exist. Although mindfulness is all the rage these days, the concept isn’t new to us; we’ve already been instructed to live life fully over three thousand years ago. In Parashas Nitzavim we’re told to “choose life,” and we understand this as the obligation to

do our utmost to ensure our health and, hopefully, longevity. But though we don’t like to think about it much, we know that we can’t know when our lifeline ends—that date is cleverly concealed by the Granter of Time. How then, does one choose life?

While we can’t choose the length of our days, it is worthwhile to remember that the breadth and fullness of our days is entirely up to us. Each day, each moment, instead of reaching for and already thinking about the next, we

have the opportunity to contemplate the presence of the present and choose to live life.

“When I was younger,” Mendel says, “I thought a bloated bank account was the embodiment of success. I pushed people aside and directed all my time toward my work. I remember the first time we considered a massive purchase and I realized we could do it without strain—but there was no joy in the purchase at all.

That empty feeling scared me.

We spend so much time working hard to obtain things we

will subsequently spend time on to maintain. If there is no time to enjoy the reward, then to what end is the struggle?”

With time being so precious, our most valuable commodity—the greatest chessed we can do—is to give of our time. In the true style of olam hasheker, giving financially gets the most recognition, but the truth is, giving money is easy. Money can be re-earned.

Giving of our time, though, is akin to giving our very selves.

Time to get Busy At the same time, are we investing in our own futures?

Too often, taken in by the foolhardy belief that we still have plenty of time in the days or years to come, we keep busy accomplishing a boss’s goals, achieving others’ dreams, or being otherwise preoccupied with “busyness” that has no bearing on our future and gives us no joy in the present.

There are no guarantees. Putting things off is a waste of the present and presumptive reliance on a precarious future.

“With a youngster’s presumption of invincibility and immortality, I used to think tomorrow would always come and I’d get to my laundry list of dreams…at some point,” Devora says. “The ‘tomorrows’ became todays and yesterdays. Years went by, and then suddenly, today looked very different. My capabilities had suddenly and drastically changed. Though I’m grateful to Hashem for the ability to get through my day, I can’t help but cry for those missed

opportunities, time that went by unmarked. Ironically, time taught me—too late—that she was my greatest possession.”

Time is the Ultimate Teacher There are concepts we can’t learn when we are younger.

No amount of practice will have an infant walk or a typical three-year-old write. Similarly, some ideas are just beyond our comprehension until we are ready for them.

My friend Shevy shares, “We know a person is supposed to feel ‘bishvili nivrah ha’olam— the world was created for me.’

But there is also the concept of ‘anochi afer ve’efer—I’m but dust and ashes.’ I struggled to understand how the two concepts can coexist in one person at one time.

“When my father passed away, I suddenly understood how someone can be everything and also nothing. I remember sitting on the plane feeling so overwhelmed—yet the world went on spinning.

People were laughing, cars were driving…life continued.

True, my father was everything, yet we are not more than dirt and ash. But I felt this importance and this unimportance so deeply. And that’s when I understood.

“I’ve applied that feeling to many areas of my life. When I daven, I know my tefillos are important, but I am deserving of nothing. When I speak to people, I know the world was created for them just like me and every individual. I try to think about how each person

When I have an opinion, I allow it to be valuable and important to me, but still know it isn’t that consequential. The Speeding Train The passenger on a train who is engrossed in conversation, reading, or lightly napping, is bound to be disappointed with the brevity of the trip when he’s jarred awake and informed that he’s reached his destination. This unceasing and fast-moving journey of life is much the same, and whether awake or asleep, we traverse it at the same pace—the preoccupied become aware of it only when it is over.

As soon as we get distracted lamenting the loss of yesterday, or agonizing about the worries of tomorrow, the moment is gone. This precious gift of the present is entirely squandered. And if we are sleeping through it, then for all intents and purposes, was the moment even here?

Time slips through our fingers; she never stands still.

Now is not now anymore. The moment is gone and all that remains are the memories made or the lessons learned.

Yes, yesterday may be gone, but today—and tomorrow— are wide open. And the possibilities are endless!

Mourning Time’s Passing Time is the very essence of growth itself—adaptation, familiarity, progress, and healing.

Hashem installed time into the briah, a loving gift and guide to all aspects of our lives.

In the sefirah, when we mourn the passing of Rabbi Akiva’s talmidim, it would behoove us to recognize that the regimented process of aveilus too is a gift designed for our healing.

Parents are the first people a child loves. The halachos surrounding mourning recognize this and offer a year to stand still and hold on.

“For a while now, I’ve noticed

that the intense pain is gone,” says Mindy. Now approaching her mother’s second yahrzeit, she marvels at the healing power of time. “It got harder before it got better, but I find the day-to-day has become easier. There’s still plenty of sadness, but the sharp pain is no longer here. Like a painful burn, the blisters have healed but the scar remains.

“Looking back, I distinctly recall being in the throes of intense pain, and time seemed to stand still. When I first noticed time had passed, it felt indicative that some healing had been happening.

“There’s gratitude to Hashem for His infinite wisdom in designing a system that allows us to heal, for the gift of time, but above all, for giving us the gift of faith. It’s a tremendous balm to know that it’s all from Hashem, and that we have our belief system that allows us to know the neshamah lives on— that this isn’t the end.”

“Everyone grieves differently,” says Elisheva, who recently came out of aveilus after her father’s sudden passing.

“What I remember distinctly at the beginning was the series of firsts. Each time there was an event and he was missing,

Losing a spouse is a very different experience.

Eventually, though, my appetite returned to normal. And while in the first few months I would fall apart at the smallest of triggers, I no longer cry from petty things as easily.”

“Losing my mother thirty years ago was incredibly and debilitatingly painful,” my own mother shares. “I couldn’t imagine carrying on without her. It was the suddenness of her death, the intensity of our connection to each other, and the life still ahead of her that exacerbated the pain. I couldn’t fathom smiling again.

But now when I think of her there is absolutely no pain— just a warm glow at her memory, and pride and gratitude at

The evidence of growth over time is most apparent in a garden, but it is also seen in humans—specifically, when two individuals make the monumental commitment to spend the rest of their time on earth together, in a joint effort to build a bayis ne’eman be’Yisrael.

With the purpose of marriage being the perpetuation of Klal Yisrael, the very premise of the union is built on the necessity to grow past our basic natures and embrace another unique individual’s ideas and identity.

In horticultural terms, grafting is when two unique species are merged in order to grow a stronger and longer lasting plant. Beyond obvious skill, the key elements required are time and patience.

In shanah rishonah, the goal is to form a solid foundation upon which the fleeting infatuation can be stoked into deeper and more meaningful sentiments, and the growth of understanding, acceptance, appreciation, and respect can commence.

The most perfect of marriages didn’t have these elements embedded at the onset—how could they? They require time to form. Despite the genuineness and charm of the early

spring glow, going from those sweet and soft smiles to a solid and secure structure is a process that cannot be rushed.

to know and understand each other—but learning all there is to know is only achieved over time. Despite the noblest of intentions, there is no crash course to speed up the process.

Creating a solid foundation requires time…and patience. In good news, interacting with the same person every day will eventually remove most of the guesswork and make things easier.

“The tefillos of a chassan and kallah on their wedding day are so powerful,” the Sanzer Rav z”l famously said, “it is a pity that this day is given to individuals so young and inexperienced, they don’t know what to pray for.” He concludes that the inherent message is that we rely on Hashem to know just what we need and to provide it.

A similar sentiment can be said about shanah rishonah, that first year of marriage when the foundation for the future is formed. The year is so impactful on this lifetime merger—if only the two would have the experience and insight of those who’ve traveled through the twisty and sometimes hilly roads ahead.

With that in mind, the following is a compilation of advice from longer-married couples.

Tomorrow is always going to be better than today, if for no other reason than we will know our partners more.

“My advice to my younger self: chocolate,” Shimshon says. “Just know the magic that chocolate wields, and when you see her having a hard day, buy chocolate. I know for some women it’s flowers, but I wish I had known just how powerful that bar of chocolate could be. She feels seen and understood. It means more to her than any other gift. And speaking of gifts, even more appreciated than the expensive present are the words I write alongside it.”

With a positive and growth-oriented mindset, we realize that tomorrow is always going to be better than today, if for no other reason than we will know our partners more. In day-to-day life, we interact with a variety of individuals. Each interaction requires that we read them,

attempt to interpret where they might be coming from, and conceive the best possible way to work with their specific personality traits. Marriage simplifies life because we get to know what annoys and encourages, what offends and what pleases. Over time— when time is cleverly invested—we’re given the opportunity to perfect our game.

The Perks of Quirks We all have our own hangups, quirks, and personality traits; some irritating, some less so. When encountering someone doing things differently, especially when it’s more noisily, slowly, or intrusively than we would, it is human nature to become annoyed.

With time, the unusual becomes familiar, the “different” becomes the same, and those annoying quirks may no longer irk. They might even become so familiar and expected that their absence would feel worrisome.

In the beginning, Rena was annoyed. “Back then, I found it exasperating the way he’d research and compare everything we purchased in order to get ‘the best’ value. I was frustrated with the time wasted, and a part of me viewed it as him not trusting me. Although he hasn’t changed much in this regard, I have. I began recognizing it as a protectiveness; a way to ensure his family gets the best. These days, when he tells me he isn’t ready to make a decision, it’s actually expected and almost appreciated.”

Respect Early on, adoration goes hand in hand with infatuation.

But the fleeting nature of the latter also impacts the longevity of the blind admiration. It is only with time, when we truly know the extent of the effort, ehrlichkeit, intelligence, and kindness embedded in our spouse’s behavior, that the respect can be genuine and deep-felt.

Suri wishes she could go back and tell her younger self, “You may think you have similar upbringings, but you come from different worlds, with different family cultures and very different communication styles. Try to be patient in this learning process. You will misunderstand each other frequently, but that’s okay.

There’s no need to panic; just ask more questions, listen more, and try to understand where his perspective is coming from.”

Deep Devotion Develops Our shidduch system has multiple modalities that result in varying levels of emotional connection prior to the finalization of the shidduch. But irrespective of the degree of endearment at the onset, the nature of that initial infatuation is that it’s fleeting. IS YOUR CHILD STRUGGLING WITH BEDWETTING? A NEW DRUG-FREE SOLUTION THAT WORKS

OUR EYES ON EGGS

Eggs are an incredible superfood, especially during pregnancy. Not only are they a convenient source of protein; they are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals commonly lacking in a prenatal diet.

For starters, egg yolks are rich in choline, which is a relative of the B vitamins that didn’t gain much attention until the last two decades. Choline has some of the same beneficial effects on a developing baby as folate, including fostering normal brain development and preventing neural tube defects. It can also permanently change, in a positive way, the genetic expression of your growing baby.

Unfortunately, most women only consume a fraction of the choline they need, partly because food sources are limited or perhaps because they’ve been scared away from egg yolks. But egg yolks and liver have, by far, the highest concentrations of choline compared to any other foods. Just two eggs (with the yolks) meet half of a pregnant woman’s dai-

ly choline needs.

fect breakfast option if you have food cravings, feel very hungry in the morning, struggle with low energy, or find yourself gaining weight faster than you expected.

Additionally, eggs increase the strength of the amniotic sac, thus preventing premature rupture of membranes, informally known as early “breaking of the waters.”

Blima was a new client when she told me that her water always broke as early as three weeks before her due date, thus complicating labor. I advised her to eat eggs every single day.

This was five years ago. At her two subsequent deliveries, her babies came in a water slide; the water did not break until she was ready to deliver.

Eggs are also rich in vitamin A, vitamin E, omega-3, and vitamin D—and I should specify that all the nutrients listed are found in the egg yolk. So, make sure to eat the “whole” egg so as not to miss out on many of the benefits. There’s a reason an egg comes with a yolk, after all.

This is why I recommend eating eggs every single day.

Bread has gotten a bad rap, but let’s question this. Often, clients tell me with pride that, as a health goal, they never eat bread. Is skipping bread a good idea?

The Good Whole grain bread is nutrient-rich, helps with feelings of fullness, and provides much-needed energy. It is a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, bread is satiating and has a calming effect. Since bread provides carbs, it fuels the brain and muscles. For these reasons, bread has universally been a diet staple.

When making healthy habit changes, it is common to run out of food ideas, but bread can be a great menu filler because of its quick prep time. Additionally, bread is a food that most people don’t get bored of, making healthy eating sustainable.

The Bad Why would you cut bread out of your menu? The reason, for some, is to limit carb intake, while others feel that bread causes bloating. Some people have food sensitivities, such as gluten intolerance. Since not all breads were created equal, finding the right bread for you is a better idea than cutting it out completely.

“Bread Gladdens the Heart”

Bread is a great meal option. Look for bread with “whole” as the first ingredient, and minimal added sugar or sweetener. The same applies to sourdough bread; choose sourdough made with whole ingredients. White bread, including sourdough, is stripped of fiber and nutrients, making it a poor food choice. For a nutrient-rich bread, try Ezekiel bread made with minimally processed ingredients. Eat wholesome bread and see the positive difference it has on your day.

Eating bread may be the foundation of eating right. Before omitting an essential food, it is smart to have a viable replacement. The question to ask yourself is, what will I eat instead? Skipping bread may lead to eating cake, since cake is very similar. Get past the brainwashing against bread, and start feeling fuller, happier, and lighter all at once.

“For Hashem gives wisdom; from His Mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” (Mishlei 2:6) Hashem is the ultimate Healer. Invariably, human doctors will at times be stumped, leaving us searching for alternate answers.

Reactions I am very close to my aunt, and I felt very sorry for her when she shared with me a few months ago that she had developed intense itching across her whole body. It wasn’t constant, but whenever it happened, it was incredibly uncomfortable.

She told me she had consulted a prestigious dermatologist, and he had advised her not to bother with major dietary changes.

His recommendation, since the itching only happened sporadically, was to take Benadryl whenever she felt it was necessary.

My aunt is almost seventy and has been on the same diet for most of her life. She was happy with the doctor’s advice, primarily because she was grateful

not to have to make any major lifestyle changes at her age. Besides, the one concern she had about Benadryl—its predicted drowsiness—didn’t seem to be affecting her at all. And so, over the course of the winter, she made sure her drawers, cabinets, and car were well stocked with Benadryl so she had a dose handy whenever the need arose.

She invited my family for Pesach and was her vivacious and capable self. The morning after the first Seder, she started itching like crazy and nothing she tried helped. Throughout the day it got progressively worse. After the second Seder she couldn’t sleep at all, and the following day she was literally

crying from the pain.

She was grateful not to have to make any major lifestyle changes at her age.

I have a close friend who is a respected holistic healer, and among her modalities, she does muscle testing to determine allergies and other issues. I made an emergency appointment for my aunt. The muscle testing revealed that the “must”—the homemade juiced grapes my aunt drank at the Sedarim— had caused the severe allergic reaction. Interestingly, she was also reacting to the walnut oil and freshly squeezed juice.

My friend prepared a kosher for Pesach homeopathic remedy (company Rayz from Monsey), which contained Apis Mel and Rescue. After only three hours, my aunt began to experience relief.

When my baby was four days old, I noticed some definite signs of jaundice. I consulted the nurse on duty, but she dismissed it and said the baby looked fine.

This was difficult because this facility was nowhere near my hometown and the baby’s pediatrician was not local. I called the practice and spoke to the

BYE BYE BAD BREATH Lately, I’ve been dealing with acid reflux, which is causing me to wake up with a dry mouth and bad breath. It also affects my teeth, making them dry and brittle. I know this issue could be helped with healthy diet changes, but I’m not so sure I’m ready for that. Any advice?

Reflux is tough and can worsen during nighttime hours. When I had such symptoms, I was told to sleep on an incline where my head was six to eight inches higher than my feet. I used metal bed risers on the legs of the bed to create this set-up. This gave me that gravity boost and helped my inner digestive systems settle down more smoothly while asleep. Another pointer to keep in mind to alleviate reflux issues is weight loss. My nutritionist shared with me that increased weight can pressure the esophagus area and lead to more heartburn. Back when I suffered from reflux, I was very on top of my diet, and losing some weight really made a difference to the symptoms. Wishing you all the best.

When acid reflux produces chronic symptoms, GERD is usually diagnosed.

Many people with GERD complain about dry mouth, bad breath, and dental issues. In my position as a registered dietitian, I’ve seen that GERD symptoms can be significantly reduced by some easy lifestyle changes. In regard to diet, you don’t have to make any drastic changes; just stick with some simple, effective pointers. I would suggest the following tips: eat slower, stick with blander foods, pinpoint and avoid trigger foods, stay away from sparkling drinks, don’t move too fast after a meal, and don’t sleep immediately after eating. Keeping to these habits on a regular basis can really help ward off GERD or reflux issues. Feel better!

That can be really uncomfortable. We should really stop and be sure to thank Hashem for the gift of saliva, which offers us a more comfortable feeling in our mouths. I always like to research ways to deal with any issue as opposed to resorting to medication. I wonder if there is an underlying virus causing these symptoms. Perhaps a thorough check-up at the doctor is in order. That way, you can know more clearly what core issue you are dealing with, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. It may also be a low-grade flu or chronic cold showing up as acid reflux. I hope you gain lots of clarity and the symptoms ease up real soon.

Avoid trigger foods. The body is sensitive; it has likes and dislikes. There was a time when I craved a certain type of drink and would purchase it often. Without fail, every time I drank that drink, I’d experience heavy reflux. Physical symptoms are the body’s way of telling us how to care for ourselves more. So, take stock.

What foods are you eating? When do you experience these symptoms? When is it most severe? Sometimes, eating smaller, more frequent meals for a couple of days can help you more easily pinpoint which foods to avoid. In general, drinking plenty of plain water is very helpful with reflux symptoms. Lastly, chewing foods very thoroughly can be a game-changer, too.

Tea with milk. It is such a soothing drink. Whenever my reflux acts up, I know it’s time for a tea. I alternate between peppermint and chamomile, which promote relaxation and reduce inflammation. The milk mixed into the tea is there to coat the stomach lining and prevent acids from acting up. Enjoy and feel better.

For those dealing with acid reflux, timing is huge. Avoid all large meals and any meals close to bedtime. When I experienced these types of symptoms, I stopped eating two to three hours before I went to sleep, and it really helped. This gives you the greatest chance to properly and safely digest all the food without inducing the reflux. Aloe vera juice or any antacid juice was a big help, as well. Have it handy in your kitchen, car, and at work so you can take small sips throughout the day. Interestingly, I found that wearing loose-fitting and comfortable clothing really eased the symptoms for me too. Tight clothes put pressure on the abdomen, which can potentially worsen the symptoms. I hope these ideas are useful for you.

My doctor always tells me that he recommends probiotics for many gastrointestinal issues. Some probiotic strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus are known to be very effective in easing heartburn symptoms.

There is an interesting study that showed that chewing sugar-free gum for 30 minutes after any meal could reduce acid levels in the esophagus. Some people say that peppermint gum is the best one to use to calm down acid issues after a meal. As with all suggestions, do what works for you. If gum-chewing is helpful, then that’s wonderful. If not, then skip it and move on to another suggestion. Everybody reacts differently.

Stress can trigger reflux symptoms in some people. Does that come as any surprise? I hear that you don’t want to make major dietary changes. Often, we get very complacent with the typical foods we eat and it’s hard to change.

Can you try some mindful meditation, muscle relaxation, or deep breathing?

Monitor the reflux reactions after you do these exercises. Are they any better?

Take up a hobby. Dabble in art or practice yoga. Sometimes a healthful distraction from our troubles is just what the doctor ordered for our healing. I wish you lots of peace and success.

That is tough. My daughter experiences acid reflux. Just like you, she didn’t want to take on any major food restrictions. It was too much of an overhaul for her. So I did some research for her and found some foods to add to her everyday meals that are proven to help stave off reflux symptoms. She happily reports that these foods made all the difference in alleviating her symptoms. First is ginger. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can really soothe the stomach. Baking soda mixed with water, gurgled in your throat can neutralize stomach acids as well. Apple cider vinegar (try it in salads) balances stomach pH levels. Lemon juice is so deliciously fresh. It contains citric acid, which helps the stomach to digest food. There are also bananas, which are loaded with potassium that aids digestion as well. Get creative in how to incorporate these foods into your diet. The more the better!

Next Up: A month ago, I was calmly sitting on my couch nursing my baby, when I experienced a tremendously excruciating pain in my back. Downward Dog Lying flat, face down on the ground, place the palms of your hands and soles of your feet on the floor and lift the hips as high as they’ll go. The body makes an upside-down V, and the head looks between the two arms. Stretch the heels to the ground and lean the head further in between the arms to deepen the stretch.

Make a box with your body. Start off on all fours, knees and shins on the floor and palms supporting you. Arch the back so the head looks upward and the belly pushes inward and the hips thrust upward. And then round it out and curve the upper body toward the ground. The back becomes rounded, head tucks into chin, and hips tightly squeezed inward.

Lying flat, face down on the ground, place the palms of your hands on the ground to lift the upper body. One leg bends inward toward the chest and slides to align the shin/lower leg right under the chest. The opposite leg extends outward. Fold upper body over bent knee under chest. Repeat on the opposite side.

Hold each side for 10 seconds.

From a prone position lying on the floor, push up on the palms, drop onto the elbows, and arch the back, keeping the head high.

Sit on the floor and bring the soles of your feet together.

Upper body is stiff with a straight posture. Gently lift your knees up and down in a rhythmic “flapping” motion. Your palms are supporting your knees or flat on the ground.

Hold for 10 seconds.

Rochel Albert is a fascinating, energetic, and multifaceted woman. I’m in New York, and Rochel is in Florida, so we connected over the phone. Her energy seemed to sizzle through the wires, as she passionately shared her story and invited me to enter her fascinating world.

Dating didn’t go as she had hoped. It felt like the scene was full of partying and fun, but without actual focus on marriage and building a relationship.

Rochel wanted something different.

She longed to connect in a deeper way with someone who shared her vision of creating a loving home.

Her partner was a socialite and public figure, and Rochel felt the tension of the unspoken pressure to be the same.

Rochel was not raised religious. She was an only child, and she lost her father at the tender age of four. Growing up, Rochel pined for her own family.

She wanted a husband, children, and a lively home. Living in the Beverly Hills area of California, as soon as she was old enough, she started dating in the same way as everyone around her.

Then she stumbled upon Aish HaTorah LA. Rochel began attending classes and soon found out about dating for marriage the Jewish way. “No physical contact before marriage?” she thought.

“That sounds so smart; where do I sign up for this?!”

In 1991, when court reporting was slow, Rochel flew off to Israel to learn more about being a religious Jew. She registered in Aish HaTorah, planning to stay for a few weeks. As she learned, she began to feel overwhelmed with how much there was to learn and do.

She confided in one of the rabbanim, who advised her to slow down and just

take on one mitzvah a month. Rochel knew she was going to start with Shabbos candles, shomer negiah, and mezuzah. She flew back to LA and dove right back into work, while trying to hold on to what she had learned in Israel.

Coming back to LA was challenging.

As she learned and grew in her Yiddishkeit, Rochel’s vivacious personality remained unchanged, but she no longer felt the need to be so publicly visible in order to achieve recognition. She was becoming more comfortable with her inner self, and she was moving further into a world where accomplishments were measured very differently than in the world in which she was raised.

Time passed. Soon it had been eight months and Rochel was still adding on one mitzvah each Rosh Chodesh.

Eventually, Rochel recognized that she could no longer live and thrive in two opposing worlds. At 25, she sold her share of the business to her partner.

Although the business was growing and becoming prosperous, it was becoming impossible to live in two such contradicting environments and value systems, and she could no longer live in a plastic world. With great determination, and a bit of trepidation, Rochel walked away from the company and into a life of Judaism.

Back in Israel, she once again settled

into Aish HaTorah. This time, she figured she’d need about six months and then she’d be ready to start dating, but she soon realized she needed more time. She stayed at Aish for two years and finally began dating for marriage at 29.

Being smart, outgoing, and successful, Rochel had no trouble getting dates—but none of them went anywhere. It felt like she’d been suggested every single guy in Israel in her age range. She wasn’t worried though, as she knew Hashem had something special in mind for her.

There was one South African whose name came up a few times. He was

also from a nonreligious family, and he was learning in Israel.

He’d gotten semichah and was planning to go back to South Africa and become a rabbi there.

Rochel wanted to make aliyah, so she kept saying no. But soon she felt like she was running out of options for a woman of five foot ten who wanted a man under forty. So she relented. She was excited to get married and build a life and family together with him.

Kallah classes were a challenge for her. She studied with a kallah teacher who took a very old-school approach, and in response to some of her questions, the teacher would say things like, “You’re out of the secular world now, and we need to clear your perverted mind.” Rochel became confused about what was normal and Torah sanctioned and what was not. Sadly, many parts of a healthy Torah marriage and relationship were portrayed inaccurately by this teacher’s attitude and lessons.

To this day, Rochel is not sure where the woman got her information from, or if she just made everything up herself. “The advice she was giving was not Torah based at all, and was ruinous to a healthy relationship,” Rochel reveals. “It looked like she was trying to be super frum, but it wasn’t actually frumkeit; it was krumkeit.

“It took me over a year to work through the issues that came up due to the woman’s inappropriate teaching,” she continued. “Eventually, with the help of other mentors, I relearned how to build a marriage from a proper Torah perspective. To this day, I wonder how the other women she taught managed to build healthy marriages.”

Rochel’s first two children put her through many of the stan-

dard difficulties that new mothers face, but it was her third who really sent her for a spin. For the first few months he was easy to deal with, but as he grew older, he began having many health and behavioral difficulties beyond the norm. In preschool, he became fearless and destructive.

At three years old, he was kicked out of playgroup. Between the ages of 5 and 13, he was in and out of four psychiatric facilities.

Nobody could figure out what was wrong with him or how to make things better so he could function in a healthy manner.

At that point, after living in South Africa for the first three years of their marriage, followed by a stint in LA and a few years in South Carolina, the Albert family ended up in Florida. Rochel started a new court reporting business, and her husband got a job as the chaplain in a hospital in South Miami.

As in many instances where there is a child with high-level needs, especially when there is no clear diagnosis or pathway to health, Rochel’s marriage began to suffer. Her husband was a structured and scheduled South African and his way of doing things was often at odds with her free-flowing Californian spirit. The other children were traumatized by their brother’s behavior, and their parents didn’t know how to help them.

For Rochel and her husband, dealing with their son was rapidly becoming a huge stressor and their marriage was crumbling.

Being a man of peace at all costs, her husband would often withdraw rather than force his point. Meanwhile, out of frustration at the lack of communication, she’d judge him as incompetent for not standing up and taking charge. That, in

Baruch Hashem, today her son is a fine and healthy young man, and he tells her all the time, “Mommy, the only reason I survived this is because you always believed in me.” The violent and irrational part of him has gone, and he came back to his genuine sweet self. But it took a lot of work to get there.

One of the first people who was truly able to help was Rabbi Herschel Lazaroff, a Chabad healer with a background in particle physics. Rabbi Lazaroff is well-versed in Chassidic philosophy and has trained with traditional Kabbalists, healers, and kinesiologists. He has also worked with physicians, including MDs, osteopaths, chiropractors, and psychiatrists, who refer patients to him. Rabbi Lazaroff was able to help remove a tremendous amount of the negative energy attached to her son, but there was still more work to do.

Rochel began taking her son to appointments for LoRETA neurofeedback in Boca, an hour away from where the family lives. Three times a week they’d make the trek, slowly rehabilitating the disconnect in his brain. Finally, with the help of Hashem, he started doing better. He got off some meds. The

school stopped calling with complaints. The brain scan showed healing. And then Rochel got stuck in court one day and everything unraveled.

“I was doing reporting at a deposition,” she explains, “and his school called me and said that he couldn’t come back without his immunization records. I asked my husband to take our son to the doctor and get a note for a religious exemption. The infant and early childhood immunizations he had gone through had messed him up badly, and there was no way I was going to give him any more unnecessary shots.”

Her husband took their son to the doctor but forgot to tell him not to give the shots. Neither her husband nor her son mentioned this to her at the time.

The next day, somebody from the school called, frustrated.

“We don’t know what’s going on with your son, but he is acting out of control. You need to come get him.”

Rochel picked him up and took him to the neurofeedback provider. At the office, he was off the walls, driving everyone crazy. The doctor did a scan and asked Rochel, “What happened here? Things that were better suddenly look worse.”

Her son looked at her and said, “Could it be because of the shots they gave me?” Rochel almost felt her jaw drop to the floor.

How could her husband have made such a terrible mistake?

This wasn’t a healthy mainstream child! This was a highly sensitive boy with a strong history of bad reactions to immunizations.

Rochel requested before and after scans of her son's brain and showed the evidence of new inflammation to the pediatrician, who said there had to

be a coincidence. Of course, it wasn’t possible to prove such a thing, and Rochel realized that she wasn’t going to accomplish anything with this pediatrician.

The LoRETA neurofeedback sessions had been eating up a tremendous amount of time each week, and now so much of the work had been undone. Rochel realized that she needed to take over her son’s healing.

With her marriage falling apart and her son out of control, Rochel pulled herself together and went back to school. She trained in biofeedback and learned a variety of healing modalities, including energy therapy and gemstone therapy. She wrote a book on medical scams. Eventually, she purchased an e-power machine, which does work similar to neurofeedback, but in a more free-flowing way, and she used that to help her son.

Rochel sat down with her husband and they had some difficult conversations. “It’s kind of like with a plant,” she tells me.

“You can kill it by poisoning it, overwatering it, or neglecting it. Ignoring my marriage wasn’t going to fix it. We discussed different boundaries and needs that we both have. We identified pain points that were really getting in the way. Finally, we found a way forward.”

Slowly, her son began to heal again. But her marriage didn’t.

Twice, she and her husband went through a period of separation where he moved out of their home. She vividly recalls one Friday night after they separated for the second time. “I lit the Shabbos candles and was filled with an intense sadness.

I almost felt like blowing out the flames. ‘Hashem,’ I said, ‘I tried so hard. I want to be close to You. I want to build a Jewish home. Is this what I get? A

Reading books with marriage advice also helped a lot. “I’m a very strong woman,” Rochel admits, “and my husband is super kind and empathic. His softness is a great asset to his job as a chaplain, but in our marriage, our strengths were clashing in an unhealthy way.

“I especially learned a lot from a book written for strong women who want to make their marriages better. I learned to be a giver, and more importantly, a receiver. A receiver is different from a taker. A receiver

is a special kind of giver, who grants others—in this case, my husband—the ability to give to them. Receiving is a unique and holy feminine form of giving.

“When I started implementing these changes on my part, he began changing in ways I hadn’t expected. Suddenly, our marriage was doing a whole lot better, and we were both so much happier. I stopped triggering him and he stopped triggering me. His fight-or-flight dorsal vagal response could finally calm down; he could give, I could receive, and I knew I had to share this magic with others.”

After lots of training, talking to rabbanim, and many successful healing sessions, Rochel launched MOODTEK, a healing business that harnesses the power of Kosher Energy Therapy and helps people learn how to heal themselves and help others. Her program is halachically approved by Rabbi Rephoel Szmerla, a dayan from Lakewood who is also a world-renowned expert on energy healing. Her work is designed for frum individuals and families seeking holistic solutions to a variety of life’s challenges, including shalom bayis and intimacy issues, learning difficulties, physical pain, allergies, emotional distress, childhood traumas, fears and phobias, and addictions.

Aside from the work she does with individuals and the courses she gives in Energy Dynamics, Rochel has a special focus on marriage; she doesn’t want anyone else to go through what she did. In her Baggage-Free Marriage Energy Course, Rochel teaches how to pinpoint, release, and fix trouble spots in a marriage from an energy perspective. The tools she teaches help people release traumas, distorted programs, core beliefs, 48

patterns, emotions, and triggers. She shares a Torah-true perspective on manhood, womanhood, matchmaking, emotional connections, and emotional IQ, as well as the halachos of a husband-wife relationship.

“Couples need to understand that Hashem brought them together to work it out, not to get divorced. People need to get rid of baggage, set clear boundaries, and fix communication.

We have generations and generations of traumas that are passed down and are ruining our homes. We need to recognize them for what they are— traumas, klipos, sitra achra. We need to let go of them, not hold on tighter.”

“Most couples bring a ton of baggage into marriage,” Rochel asserts. “That baggage has nothing to do with marriage, but it plays out when they step all over each other’s triggers and childhood wounds, especially when they don’t have good communication skills. I teach people how to clear out all that baggage and remove conflicting beliefs like, ‘I have to be perfect, but I’m flawed,’ or ‘I have no right to be happy.’

“If someone was brought up in a way which taught them that they have no right to be happy, how can they possibly have a positive attitude toward the goodness and kindness their spouse is sending their way? Of course such a woman won’t be happy with her husband! If he’s nice to her, she feels happy, and that feels wrong. So she gets upset, and he gets upset, and the nicer he is, the less happy they are, and if that makes no sense to you—you're right! It makes no sense. It’s not a way to live!

That’s not what Hashem wants for us. Most of this has nothing to do with marriage, but it has to do with baggage.

Today, Rochel lives in Miami with her husband as empty nesters. Her son is learning in Israel in Yeshiva Midrash Shmuel, and he’s doing great.

He works in the afternoons as a plumber and plays the violin in his spare time. He loves to learn and still has a heart of gold.

Although her son’s fearlessness continues to worry her— she’s a Jewish mother, after all—Rochel knows that one day it will serve him well. She is confident that just as she found her calling, he will find his. And so can everyone else. “Hashem put so much healing into the world,” she emphasizes. “We need to keep looking until we find the right path. There is a way forward for every person, in any situation.”

FROM PATIENT TO PARTNER RECOGNIZING MY OWN ROLE IN THIS JOURNEY Hanna Roth

These days, everyone has an awareness of the most dreaded diagnosis. Many people will not allow the name of this disease to pass their lips. It seems that an overwhelming number of people know someone, directly or indirectly, who is suffering through this harrowing condition. I went through a cancer experience with my father, and years later with my husband a”h. I was witness to all the ups and downs: the fear, the torment, and the struggle to keep going. When years later, the unthinkable happened and I found myself in this same dreadful situation, I was numb with shock. I looked to draw from my experience but soon realized that this was different.

This was me. This was going to be my personal journey.

I thought a lot about my choices, from how I would deal with my inner turmoil to how I’d go about sharing it outwardly with my family. It broke my heart to watch my children look so sad and bewildered. I’d been in their shoes. I am the mother; I was supposed to fix whatever ails them. How would I help them navigate a trip down an unpredictable, bumpy terrain, when I myself wasn’t sure where we were headed?

The very first thing I did was inform my family that if they wanted to do something for me, the plan forward was for everything and everyone to proceed as normal. Yes, we were in a crisis, but we were going to go through it together.

There would be no secrets. At the same time, there was a lot of living to do and that’s exactly

what we were going to continue doing. Despite this disruption, I was determined to have the spirit of the family remain intact.

wholehearted belief that irrespective of what I do, Hashem is the real healer of the sick, as we say every day in Shemoneh Esreh, “Rofeh cholei amo Yisrael.” At the same time, I felt that what was happening to me was a test, a nisayon, that called for some kind of response. I found a new purpose.

I found myself indulging in thoughts that led me down memory lane. During the course of my life, I’d had my share of trials and tribulations.

It was comforting to remember how in the past, in the midst of enormous difficulties, I’d always found rachamim. Even when the odds seemed stacked against me, be’chasdei Hashem, I’d always gotten through situations. This perspective and reminder brought me solace and the hope that Hashem would not abandon me now either.

April of 2022 was the start of my first round of chemo. I don’t see how much can be gained by describing what that was like, other than to say it was a debilitating ordeal. When four months passed and the treatments did not yield any results, my doctor was pleased the disease had not progressed any further. Medically, her position was sound, but for me the status quo was not an option.

One day, I heard someone say that cancer is a Divine tap on the shoulder. A light went on.

I woke up like a lion that had been sleeping. I had been going along with the prescribed protocol but was not actively making any choices in my treatment. Why was I lying around like a rag doll, allowing others to call all the shots? It was time for action.

First and foremost, I want to state clearly that I have a

I learned about the connection between food and cancer, the role of my immune system and the importance of strengthening it. I found the connection between chemicals and cancer to be undisputed.

It became apparent to me that I should not continue to fuel this machine in the same way that allowed it to malfunction in the first place.

The body is a wondrous, super complex metaphorical “machine,” created by the Almighty, with different systems that work together harmoniously.

Our design is one that no genius in the world has ever been able to duplicate. It became apparent to me that I should not continue to fuel this machine in the same way that allowed it to malfunction in the first place.

I needed to remove impurities and flood the system with clean fuel and potent additives to culminate in a well-oiled, optimally functioning apparatus that would promote healing and partner well with the conventional treatments.

Eating is a habit, and habits are hard to break. It takes a lot of work and commitment to bring about drastic change.

It doesn’t happen overnight. I began the elimination and then the substitution process in relation to my diet. I believe that

helpless victim sitting idly by while this predator was wreaking havoc on every part of my being, both physically and emotionally.

Hashem created foods in a way that is perfectly orchestrated to give us everything we need for sustenance at optimal levels, enjoyment, and healing when necessary. Therefore, in my well-researched, self-designed diet, I eat everything, except dairy. I place tremendous focus on “clean,” aka organic. I do still regularly enjoy eating red meat and chicken, but only grass fed/ pasture raised. I also eat wildcaught fish and sardines. Everything must be chemical free, sugar free, and low in acid. All these specifications translate into a great deal of time in the kitchen where I am busy experimenting and creating healthy meals that are tasty and beautiful. My emphasis is on smart, cancer-fighting superfood choices in all categories of the food pyramid. Food planning and preparation is now my passion.

I know the above might seem overwhelming, but actually,

there’s more! I now make my own household cleaning concoctions. I use only natural personal care products, and for my clothing too, there are no more fabric softeners or toxic laundry detergents. Even the paper goods I use are unbleached and untreated. We are fortunate to be living in a time where there is a huge market for natural, organic, and health-promoting products.

I researched supplementation, and with the help of the advanced health organization Ezras Chaim, I got onto a program that, in tandem with my diet, I took very seriously.

Results did not present themselves overnight. But with time, patience, and hard work I began to notice small changes for the better, until I got to the point where I actually found myself doing more, feeling noticeably stronger, and my energy increasing further. It was empowering to not feel like a

I endured 12 months of unsuccessful conventional treatments, while at the same time I continued to follow my own program diligently. None of the previous drugs had been helpful, but rather than trying another new approach, I suggested to my doctor that I go back to the last drug I’d had a detrimental reaction to, but at the lowest dose, just to test my tolerance level. She told me it wasn’t a good idea since it was typically used as a maintenance dose and would be a waste of time.

At my insistence, my doctor decided to humor me and let me try it for three months, to be followed with a PET scan. For the first time, be’chasdei Hashem, unexpected and unprecedented improvements appeared on the scan. It was decided to try another three months with the same low-dose drug. Miracle of miracles—for the first time I had a perfectly clean scan, followed by two more scans at sixmonth intervals with the same outcome.

I pointed out to my doctor, who believed that my nutritional effort was nonsense, that oncologists are geared to eradicate disease but disregard overall healing of the body. In jest, I told her, “Oncologists are acting as exterminators, but why aren’t they doing their role as healers?” I explained that what I was doing was strengthening my immune system for a good fight, protecting my organs, and revitalizing and healing my body. “Wouldn’t that make us partners?” I asked. I’m not sure I changed her mind about the

role of nutrition, but I know I earned her respect. Previously she’d laugh at my insistence on nutrition. Today, she celebrates me.

I would like to share another surprising aspect of my journey, an unexpected bonus that was not of my making at all. We’ve all heard and learned about the concept of finding light within the darkness. To actually experience it was stunning. That which is threatened becomes more precious than ever. I noticed changes in my thought processes, my choices, and priorities. Some things that I used to view as a problem suddenly started to seem petty and a waste of time. I found the ability to be more tolerant in my relationships. I developed an inner strength I never knew I had.

Every day is a gift I cherish. I get excited about the change of seasons. There is such joy and gratitude in my ability to host one Shabbos meal, myself, with all the trimmings. Nothing is taken for granted. It’s like living in a heightened state of awareness and appreciation.

The grand prize, though, was watching my children come together with a common cause to support me. They congregated at my house every evening after their day of work. At the time of the diagnosis, we lovingly called this congregation “The Yeshiva,” and it continues to this day.

Even putting aside how special their presence and participation makes me feel, I watch them sharing their lives, bonding like never before. The love that has blossomed between them is extraordinary to witness. What a gift to any mother! It was in the midst of the darkness that I found happiness.

You too can turn a challenge into an opportunity to shine.

While remembering to hold onto your emunah in Hashem, daven for the wisdom to figure out how to navigate this new reality. Are you going to allow a crisis to bring out the best or the worst in you, or are you going to remember that your loved ones, your caregivers, are also suffering, and opt to be loving and considerate? In the throes of anxiety and uncertainty, it is easy to forget that they are watching your every move.

What an incredible opportunity for teachable moments and for making memories that will forever be cherished.

I do not have the adequate words to express my gratitude to our Almighty Creator, Who gave me the good sense, the guidance, motivation, and strength to persevere and endure in the most difficult challenge of my life. When I consider everything that happened to me, I am in awe. I am in awe of the unimaginable strength and willpower that can be brought forth, far beyond perceptions and expectations.

The word “healed” at this time is a prayer and a hope simply because I am still a patient; I am still on medication, albeit minimal. We learn from Yaakov Avinu that after he ran away from Lavan, Lavan set out to pursue him with the intent to kill him. Hashem came to Lavan and warned him not to dare even touch Yaakov Avinu.

Why did Hashem stop Lavan from harming Yaakov only after Yaakov was already well on his way? He could have spared him the trouble of uprooting his entire family. Midrash Tanchuma (Vayeitzei 13) explains that a person should never say, “I won’t bother to do anything; I will wait and Hashem will help me.” Rather, a person should “with his hands” do whatever he can and then Hashem shole’ach es birchaso, he will be blessed.

Only after Yaakov Avinu actually made the step to save himself did Hashem protect him.

I would like to leave Wellspring readers with one final thought. Next time you’re tempted to say, “I can’t,” stop and think. Know that your mind has enormous powers, even when your body is weak.

If you really want to play a part in the healing process, harness that power and you will be surprised when you find that with the help of Hashem, “Indeed, I can” will become a reality.

GUT REACTION

ULCERATIVE COLITIS: A CASE STUDY see success from dietary changes as he had not yet tried any nutritional intervention and his diet quality was poor.

Right around the time that Meir became a father at the age of 24, he started experiencing digestive issues. The symptoms came on entirely out of the blue.

He initially attributed his loose stools and constant bathroom breaks to the stress of adjusting to his new stage in life, but the continued interference with his quality of life landed him in the office of a respected gastroenterologist.

After a round of testing, including a colonoscopy, Meir was diagnosed with mild ulcerative colitis. The doctor put him on a regimen of mesalamine, a relatively mild medication used to manage the inflammation associated with colitis. Three months later, Meir’s symptoms still weren’t under control, which was what brought him to my office seeking some more direction.

When I asked Meir about his eating habits, Meir said that he had until very recently been on what would be defined as the Standard American Diet, which goes by the fitting acronym SAD. It is high in processed foods, meats, dairy, and sugary

Meir’s previous lab work showed that fecal calprotectin and CRP—both markers of inflammation—were high, and his vitamin D was low. Additionally, Meir confirmed that there had been frequent use of antibiotics in his childhood and early teens due to recurrent strep throat infections.

desserts. Grab and go of pastries and junk food in the coffee room had been a consistent part of Meir’s lifestyle. Unfortunately, the gastroenterologist, subscribing to mainstream protocol, had told him that diet had no relation to his condition.

Thankfully, Meir intuitively recognized that line of thinking to be flawed. Recently, due to his gastrointestinal difficulties, he had slowly decreased his junk food intake, with an accompanying unintentional weight loss of 20 pounds.

As well as his less-than-stellar eating habits, Meir said he considered himself to be more of an uptight/high-strung personality type. He conceded that while he’d noticed stress contributing to gastrointestinal flare-ups, he found it difficult to improve his emotional state due to the inherent stress caused by his medical condition. He was highly motivated to change his diet due to the decreased quality of life his condition caused and his desire to prevent progression to other more intensive medication regimens. He was also a likely candidate to

Meir was ready for my suggestions and eager to follow through. He agreed to follow a more restricted diet initially to bring him quickly into remission. Because he was still experiencing loose stools with active bleeding, we temporarily restricted raw non-blended fruits and vegetables along with whole nuts and seeds for the first 4–6 weeks, with the plan to resume those once active bleeding had ceased for 2–3 weeks.

The challenge then became to incorporate anti-inflammatory plant-based foods even within his raw food restrictions. As I always explain, it’s not just about what you take out of the diet for gut healing; it’s just as much about making sure to put in healing anti-inflammatory foods to the diet—a principle often overlooked by many.

Animal fats from red meat and dark meat chicken were limited to twice weekly, with his remaining protein coming from white chicken, fish, and beans. In order to reap the benefits of anti-inflammatory foods that were difficult to incorporate, he purchased a daily turmeric carrot ginger-based juice and blended up a morning breakfast smoothie with pomegranate juice, chia seeds, kale, avocado, and organic strawberries and cherries. He also used a greens powder when possible, and his wife tried to use more herbs, garlic, and turmeric in her cooking. All processed oils were completely removed from his diet, aside from avocado oil and extra virgin olive oil, and I provided him with a list of food chemicals to avoid that are known triggers for IBD. Dairy was limited to healthier A1 protein-free forms of yogurt or cheeses only, as the A1 protein present in most traditionally raised cows’ milk has been associated with gut inflammation and IBD. In addition, due to research possibly linking the glyphosate pesticide sprayed on corn, wheat, and oats in the US as associated with the rise of IBD, I encouraged organic forms of these grains whenever possible. We initiated a few basic supplements and put together a clear diet to follow for 6–12 weeks. We also added bone broth (good ol’ chicken soup made with bones) as often as possible, and fermented foods to heal the intestinal lining and colonize the gut with healthy bacteria.

I also suggested a short list of supplements; namely, curcumin, high-dose probiotics, L-glutamine, and vitamin D. I recommended that Meir stick to the same nutritious and safe breakfasts rather than experimenting and guessing as he went along. We decided on two options: oatmeal cooked in almond milk with honey, and a smoothie, or oatmeal almond-flour muffin with eggs.

Snacks were limited to almond butter on rice cakes, A1 protein-free yogurt,

For lunch we came up with more options for Meir to choose from: organic whole grain preservative-free bread with nut butter or eggs, lentil pasta with sauce and A1 protein-free cheese, leftover fish with quinoa or sweet potato, or leftover bean or split pea soup with almond flour-based crackers.

For the initial month until salads were added in, cooked veggies or soup leftover from dinner were encouraged with lunch, for anti-inflammatory purposes.

Dinner Ideas: • White chicken or fish with a side dish of quinoa, potato, sweet potato, winter squash, or corn • Bean chili with brown rice and stirfried vegetables • Half beef/half chicken meatballs with organic whole wheat pasta or lentil-based pasta • Homemade pizza made with organic whole grain flour • Lentil/pea or bean-based soups are encouraged, as well as a cooked veggie, progressing to raw after 4–6 weeks Meir’s progress was astoundingly rapid, and he was completely symptom free by the six-week mark. After two months, he reintroduced raw produce and whole nuts successfully and weaned off some of his supplements.

His blood work and stool tests showed normal inflammation markers at the

three-month mark, and he was able to wean off his mesalamine medication.

Over the course of the next six months, he slowly liberalized his diet to allow for the occasional treat, while maintaining a healthful anti-inflammatory diet 95 percent of the time, with no negative repercussions. At the one-year mark, he was feeling energetic and symptom free, in complete remission, and happy that his healthy eating had become an easy part of his long-term lifestyle.

Removing known dietary triggers that contribute to a leaky gut and overgrowth of harmful bacteria and replacing them with healing plant-based anti-inflammatory foods that feed good gut bacteria usually has such dramatic and rapid success that I am no longer surprised to see inflammatory markers drop rapidly in colitis cases. In fact, such success cases are more the norm than not.

With an evidence-based dietary approach, most ulcerative colitis and IBD patients can look forward to—at minimum—some degree of significant improvement in their condition, with the possibility of complete remission.

A Happy and Healthy Haven There is something undeniably pleasurable about a neat and freshly cleaned home. Unfortunately, there is also something undeniable about the fact that doing the housework isn’t the most appealing pastime for many women.

I should know; after all, I never did enjoy it. I used to claim that my reluctance was due to it being boring and no fun, but since Hakol Beseder’s inception, that excuse is gone. So too is the notion that “there are more important things in life,” because I’ve come to realize that there are few things more important than a family home that is calm and clean; a warm, neat environment where children are free to express their innermost selves.

My favorite, though, was the oft-cited refrain “I just don’t have the time.” And then I foolishly sabotaged my ultimate justification by discovering the amazing power of time management.

If you are still hiding behind your excuses and don’t want your comfort level disturbed, then don’t read on. Finding that you do have the time—and learning how to use it—will make it difficult to play the hapless damsel in distress.

If on the other hand, you are eager to infuse joy and ease into this timeless task, well…it’s about time.

Like most amazing discoveries in life, I came across this one entirely by accident. I was just coming back from outdoor errands and my daughter’s school bus was to arrive in 10 minutes.

Not a lot of time in the grand scheme of things, but instead of waiting outside, where each moment feels so much longer than it should, I decided to run indoors and do something in that time.

Our goal is to recognize and actualize each moment—not by feeling obligated to accomplish in every breath, but by being cognizant of its value, and therefore appreciating its presence.

I didn’t want to miss the bus, so I set the timer for 10 minutes. By the time I was back downstairs I was marveling at just how much I had accomplished in those whirlwind few minutes. While I was patting myself on the back, I suspected that the timer was somehow also responsible.

I tested my theory with other sets of minutes and noticed something remarkable. When the time limit was under 15 minutes, there was a certain motivational ticking sensation that egged me on, encouraging me to work faster. I was having fun and getting so much done!

I found that the kids were just as enamored by this little tool and kept pointing out how amazing they were.

“I got dressed in four minutes!”

“I made my bed in two minutes!”

“I packed up the blocks in one minute!”

“I leined krias Shema in two minutes!” (Another lesson learned: the timer and siddur aren’t ideal companions.)

Overall, it was amazing the way the timer kept them focused and they were done in record time.

We too, throughout our days, have fleeting moments pass us by. They’re here…and then they’re gone. Too often we fail to pause and pay attention to their presence, which is tragic considering that once lost, these moments will never return.

Our goal is to recognize and actualize each moment—not by feeling obligated to accomplish in every breath, but by being cognizant of its value, and therefore appreciating its presence. One effective approach is to put those minutes on a timer. Once the timer is set, there is magical momentum in our movements.

This physical tool isn’t quite the same as the other Hakol Beseder tools, which are more conceptual, but it’s powerful, nonetheless. In our workshops, timers have been receiving amazing feedback, getting even reluctant kids to enjoy the work. It is one of the best-kept

In recent years, timers have gained popularity with children (and adults) who are dealing with ADD, ADHD, OCD, and other alltoo-real struggles. With the constant bombardment of technology and nonstop stimuli, most of us— even if we don’t quite subscribe to any of these labels—still sometimes struggle with focusing and knowing when to start and stop.

The timer can serve as a wonderful assistant. Aside from serving as a reminder and advising us on how many minutes we have for the task, somehow when the timer is set, there is a little ticking clock that goes off in the back of our minds, cheering us on, sharpening our focus, and fading out any distractions.

We’ve all had days when we were proud of ourselves and our accomplishments. We’ve also had days when the hours passed us by, but nothing of value was achieved.

As the day wraps up, we all want to feel good about ourselves. While it’s true that satisfaction doesn’t come from wasted moments, it also doesn’t come from cramming so much into each minute that all the joy is sucked right out of it. On the contrary, it’s achieved by discovering the beauty of enjoyable, well-lived days. Hours filled with joyful and successful moments.

The clock is ticking…precious minutes passing by. Aren’t you glad you’re doing something worthwhile?

Panto and C B5, also known as pantothenic acid, can alleviate symptoms by reducing nasal secretions, decreasing histamine levels, and reducing eosinophils. Bonus: it supports the body’s natural cortisone production, which can counteract allergens and alleviate symptoms. Look for pantothenic capsules that are combined with vitamin C. The latter also acts as a natural antihistamine and can help reduce allergy symptoms.

The Nose Knows EOs Adding essential oils to a bath or diffuser has been shown to reduce allergy symptoms. Try lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, or chamomile and inhale the pleasantly scented, soothing, and healing air.

Detox from Stress Stress can worsen allergies. Research shows that detoxifying the body can help improve immune function, which is also important for allergy sufferers. For a soothing and smart solution, try a detox bath with baking soda, Epsom salt, bentonite clay, and borax.

Hydration Correlation Pursue the Q Quercetin, an antioxidant (think, bodyguard) is found in healthy foods like apples, berries, onions, and leafy greens and can help calm down the mast cells that are responsible for the release of histamine, a key player in allergic reactions. Enjoy eating these fruits and vegetables as they may just help keep those allergies in check.

Drinking plenty of water is helpful for many ailments. When it comes to allergies, hydration helps keep nasal passages moist and prevents them from drying out.

A Sweet Treat Some studies suggest that consuming local honey can desensitize individuals to local pollen, thus reducing allergy symptoms—but other studies claim that all benefits noted stemmed from the placebo effect.

We’ve been struggling financially and live in a community with some very rich people. Recently, one of my neighbors made a le’chaim, and I stopped over to say hi and mazel tov. The wife, with whom I’m not very close and only occasionally meet in shul, asked me who I was, and I told her I live down the block.

She then invited me to come in and join the simchah. I felt like she saw me as a stranger; nobody had thought to call to tell me of the simchah in the first place until I came over and asked. I waited until she walked away and then I went home and cried.

Today she called to invite my family to their Lag B’Omer backyard barbecue, and I feel like it was a pity-invite. I often feel like no one cares about what is happening to us, and no one is inviting us, but now being invited feels worse. I don’t want to be the street’s nebach case. How do I handle this?

I will not address you as “nebach case,” because I don’t think you are a nebach. You are a beloved child of Hashem, and to quote a comic a friend sent me back in the ’90s: “I know I’m somebody ’cuz G-d don’t make no junk.”

"In retrospect, I did many things to protect my fragile self-esteem, things that were costly to myself and my family,” Rabbi Twerski writes.

What I hear in your painful letter is that when your neighbor pays no attention to you, you feel ignored, and when she does pay attention, you feel pitied. There is something within you that is making it difficult for you to see these encounters as neutral or even positive experiences.

One of my favorite authors, Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski, zt”l, wrote extensively, publishing over 90 books by the time of his passing from COVID. He used to relate that people often asked him, “Is it true that you’ve written over fifty books? How did you find time, with your busy schedule, to write so many books?”

He would tell them that he did not really write fifty books. He wrote one book, in fifty different ways. According to his own admission, almost everything he wrote relates in one way or another to the theme of self-esteem.

Why did such a brilliant and successful doctor and rabbi devote so much effort to this topic?

“I emphasize the problem of low self-esteem because I was a victim of this condition, but had no idea that this was so, just as any delusional person has no idea that one’s perceptions of reality are incorrect. In retrospect, I did many things to protect my fragile self-esteem, things that were costly to myself and my family,” Rabbi Twerski writes.

Rabbi Twerski defines self-esteem

as “a true and accurate awareness of one’s skills, capabilities, and limitations.” Self-esteem does not mean that I am any more or less valuable or useful than anyone else. It means that I am important in my own way, just as everyone else is important in their own way.

A true assessment of self-esteem means taking stock of what strengths you have as well as what weaknesses you have. When you recognize the tools Hashem has given you, you can begin to figure out what your path in life should be. Hashem gives each person exactly the tools they need—no more and no less. You are important because there are things only you have and jobs only you can do.

For some people, the work they need to do may be large scale and public. In that case, Hashem may grant them a broad or public personality, or a lot of money or social connections. Other people may have a tafkid that is more

internal and specific. Perhaps they were given a quieter personality so they are better poised to focus on the hidden things in life.

In your life, it is far more important to see what you have than to pay attention to what others have. Look at what Hashem gave you and ask yourself, “What can I do with these tools?

How can I better myself and the world using the talents and resources that I have?”

As you focus more on yourself and what you can do, you will find yourself less concerned with how others view you. Concern about what others think tends to fade into the background when you face the world with the conviction that you are the custom-made handiwork of the Creator and Administrator of the world, and you are doing your best to make Him proud. I know you can do it. Now go out there and prove me right!

Have you ever noticed that men are, well, different? Not just in visible ways, but emotionally, psychologically, communication-wise, relationship-wise, and everything in between?* Ever wonder why this is so?

If Adam was lonely in Gan Eden, why didn’t Hashem give him someone exactly like him?

They could discuss politics, drink beer, and learn Gemara together, and everything would be great. Wouldn’t that be a lot easier than throwing him together with an individual that was so essentially different than him, she might as well be another species?

We see this process occurring everywhere in the physical world. When you set out to learn a new instrument, create a chessed organization, or design your son’s bar mitzvah seudah, you start out with the excitement of a concept and a vision of what it can become.

And then comes the work—the physical and emotional process of taking that dream and making it a reality.

The answer lies in the foundational framework that is the underpinning of the physical universe: the two-step process known as the mashpia-mekabel relationship.

We all have inside ourselves the ability to be a mashpia and the ability to be a mekabel, and we tap into them at different times and in different circumstances and relationships. But it is fascinating to note that these two concepts also have another set of labels in the Torah: the stage of mashpia is also known as zachar. And mekabel is—you got it—nekeivah.

The mashpia refers to the spark of inspiration. It is raw unprocessed potential—the energy of what is yet to be. The mekabel stage receives that potential in order to actualize it

So, when Hashem created Chavah, He was not simply creating someone to keep Adam company. He was creating the husband/wife unit, with each contributing their primary

role to achieve a final product, together. We tap into that dynamic when we focus on the distinctly feminine role of being a receiver.

Why didn’t Hashem give him someone exactly like him?

To illustrate the relationship of receiver to provider, imagine you are on a desert island with no fresh water, and suddenly, it starts pouring. Frantically, you grab the only thing you can find to catch the water: a sheet of plastic. Obviously, if you hold it out flat, you will be left with only a few drops when the storm is over. If you draw up the corners and turn it into a makeshift bag—a vessel for receiving—you will be able to collect and save the water that is flowing down so abundantly.

When you tap into that intuitive drive, you reach the point where a request from you is another opportunity to bring you closer—because he feels fulfilled when he has the satisfaction of giving to you.

I once heard an astounding How to Glow podcast by marriage coach Kayla Levin, who interviewed her own husband, Noach, to get the male viewpoint. To quote his words: “I want you to want me to provide for you, and that there is something I can actually provide…By giving you an experience or gift or time that means something to you, I can fulfill that role—I get to matter.”

Wow. Is this man’s best kept secret or what? Who knew that you could actually increase emotional intimacy by expressing a desire to your husband?

But here’s the key: Your husband needs to feel that he is doing this for you—not because you’re dividing the responsibilities, not because it’s his turn, and not because it needs to get done. Your power comes from sending him the message that what he is doing is something that will make you happy.

Wondering how to make that shift?

One way is to preface your desire with “I would love…”

Rochi had an ongoing fight with her husband about the temperature in their room. He would turn the heat up, she would complain that it was hot, and he

would leave it turned up.

Finally, Rochi decided to try expressing a desire: “I would love it if the room was cool so I could sleep better.”

Next thing she knew, her husband was taking out a warm hat for himself… and turning down the heat.

Amazing to see the difference between complaining and letting your husband know how he can make you happy.

Then there was Danya. It was spring of 2017, and she found herself yearning to see the full eclipse. It goes without saying that expressing a desire in this way does not guarantee your husband will fulfill it 100 percent of the time. After all, he is entitled to his own desires, opinions, and priorities. But when you allow your husband to be your hero, something magical happens. Dear Cooks, Spring is back in full swing and emerald is returning to the landscape. The dull browns of winter are fading away with each cutting of the grass, and as your allergies might have told you, the trees are blooming, too. How glorious!

A few years ago, I learned something interesting.

Spring is my favorite season and I naturally assumed it was everyone else’s too. Not too hot, not too cold, and full of beauty—what more could anyone want? I was startled when a friend of mine said that she loves winter best. I started asking other people which is their favorite season, and I got a variety of answers. Some people love the scorching heat of summer. Others prefer the crispness of fall. It really was surprising to see the variety of responses I received.

While it was eye-opening, I still love spring best, though. There’s something about rebirth and renewal that is so invigorating. I love going back to the fresh earth after a winter’s sleep and planting

tender seedlings. I get a boost from watching the perennials pop back up shyly and then burst into color. Spring tells me that there is always hope for a brighter day and a healthier tomorrow.

Speaking of healthy eating, some people think you can save money by growing your own food.

The truth is, it’s pretty expensive. One city gardener, William Alexander, wrote a book titled The $64 Tomato about his escapades and expenses in trying to grow his own vegetables. (Thankfully, my tomatoes haven’t cost me quite that much.)

Despite the necessary investment of time, space, and money, I still plant them every year because nothing can match the flavor and nutrition of home-grown, fresh-off-the-vine produce.

Colorful and Clean Comfort Dishes I suspect it’s the availability of healthier options—or maybe it’s a growing awareness thanks to available information—but healthy food is becoming trendy.

When I was a little kid, not that long ago, if your family ate quinoa or made their own granola, you kept it to yourself and hoped no one found out. How things have shifted! Nowadays, homemade sourdough is trendy, fresh juices are all the rage, and feeding kids junk food is often followed with an apology and an excuse.

Overall, there has been a definitive upswing toward healthy eating in the last decade or so, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s proclamation to Make America Healthy Again has added momentum to the commitment.

In fact, in the past few months, there has been more national conversation regarding our eating habits and overall health than there has been in the entire decade prior.

The current focus is on less refined sugar, additives, and food coloring. Suddenly, there’s more awareness of all the rich colors that exist in nature because nothing looks or tastes as delicious as food made with healthy, wholesome ingredients.

The recipes in this issue use old-school ingredients prepared with a palatepleasing—as well as palette-pleasing— modern twist. It’s a win-win!

Make America Healthy Again Quinoa salads have become a staple in most upscale restaurants, but it’s hard to tell where their sudden popularity came from and why.

Considered an “ancient grain,” native to areas in Bolivia and Peru that surround Lake Titicaca, quinoa can be traced back to ancient history and has pretty much remained unchanged. We eat quinoa in its seed form, but initially, people ate the leaves as a source of food as well.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the year 2013 was named the “international year of quinoa.”

That’s because that year saw a significant increase in demand for quinoa in developed countries and, consequently, a significant rise in the supply. In 2014, the United States alone imported 68.9 million pounds of quinoa. To this day, it continues to be the trendiest grain.

Quinoa Crusted Chicken Strips with Dijon Honey Drizzle Why not coat your chicken strips in a nutrient-dense grain in place of the usual carb-laden breading?

2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled ½ cup whole wheat flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1½ lbs chicken strips 1 tsp salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 Tbsp olive oil Dijon Honey Drizzle ¼ cup Dijon mustard ¼ cup honey ¼ cup olive oil 1 frozen garlic cube

Place quinoa, flour, and eggs in three separate shallow dishes.

Coat chicken fingers in flour, then dip into the egg, and then into quinoa until fully coated. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper.

Heat oil in large skillet. Fry chicken strips for about 3–4 minutes per side, ensuring that the exterior is golden brown and the inside is cooked through.

For the drizzle: combine all ingredients and mix well.

Drizzle over chicken when serving.

Make America Healthy Again Sourdough is the oldest form of leavened bread and was used at least as early as ancient Egypt. Legend has it that it was discovered by accident when bread dough was left out and good microorganisms—wild yeast—drifted into the mix.

The resulting bread had a lighter texture and better taste.

Fast-forward to the turn of this millennium and sourdough popularity started surging. It started in the hip neighborhood of San Francisco and then filtered down into mainstream bakeries.

Its popularity is thanks in part to the realization that commercially prepared loaves contain many additives, including extra yeast, extra gluten, sugar, and preservatives. Many of these ingredients are the culprit behind allergies and intolerances.

Because sourdough is made from fermented yeast that occurs naturally, it produces a superior textured loaf which is perfect for toasting. It becomes super crispy and has a naturally sweet flavor despite containing absolutely no added sugar.

Sourdough Toast with Avocado and Poached Eggs This is a party for the palate. The rich array of textures and flavors, all presented on a soft, fluffy piece of wholesome bread, makes this a choice breakfast, lunch, or even dinner.

Although it is quite simple to prepare the components of this dish, the timing and sequence is critical for the perfect final product. Make the avocado too early and it turns brown; make the toast too late and the eggs will be ready first.

Preparing poached eggs takes a little practice, but once you’ve mastered it, you’ll see how delicious they are.

2 thick slices of sourdough bread 1 avocado, cubed ½ red onion, finely diced ½ tsp salt ½ lemon 3 cups water 1 tsp vinegar 2 eggs Handful cherry tomatoes, halved

Start by preparing a guacamole. Gently mix avocado, onion, and salt; squeeze lemon over it.

In a small saucepan, bring water to a rapid boil. Add vinegar and stir.

Crack each egg into a cup, then slowly drop into the rapidly boiling water. The vinegar will keep it from spreading.

At this point, toast the sourdough slices.

Check the eggs after 2 minutes. The whites should be set.

After another minute, use a slotted spoon to remove eggs and drain on paper towel.

To assemble, place toast on a plate, spread with avocado mixture, and top with poached eggs and sliced tomatoes.

Serve immediately.

Make America Healthy Again While their popularity as a meal base has grown recently, chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are one of the earliest cultivated legumes. Their distinctive nutty taste and velvety texture make them incredibly versatile in cooking.

Chickpeas are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, and because they’re high in protein, they’re perfect for replacing meat in vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Vegetarianism, and particularly veganism, has had a stratospheric upswing. So when people want to make a dish that is protein rich and has a “meaty” texture, chickpeas are the solution.

BBQ Cauliflower and Chickpea Tacos While this dish is vegan, even the heartiest carnivore in your family will love these wraps. The crunch of the carrot slaw with the spice of the chickpeas is a winning combination.

1 pkg frozen cauliflower 1 can chickpeas Olive oil 3–4 Tbsp barbecue spice rub Whole wheat tortilla wraps Carrot Slaw 1 pkg shredded colored carrots or coleslaw Juice of 1 lemon or lime 2 Tbsp monk fruit sugar ¼ cup olive oil ¼ tsp salt

Preheat oven to 375°F. To prepare the slaw: Add lemon juice, monk fruit sugar, olive oil, and salt into the bag of carrots/coleslaw.. Seal bag and allow to marinate in refrigerator until serving.

Spread cauliflower florets and chickpeas onto a large baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with spice rub. Use your hands to toss everything together so the cauliflower and chickpeas are coated well. Bake for about 25 minutes, flipping once.

If desired, warm up tortillas on the stove or in the oven.

Place about ¼ cup of cauliflower and chickpeas on each taco and top with a few tablespoons of slaw.

Chewy Tahini Brownies I’ve added a swirl of tahini into this brownie mixture.

Not only does it add to the flavor, but it also increases its nutritional value. Once you’ve tried these, you may never go back to regular brownies again!

4 Tbsp coconut oil 1 cup dark chocolate chips 3 Tbsp cocoa powder 2 large eggs 1 cup monk fruit sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp kosher salt ¾ cup tahini paste ⅓ cup whole wheat flour Make America Healthy Again While tahini may be familiar to many as the sesame paste commonly used to make techina, its culinary and nutritional perks only became popular in mainstream cooking a few years back.

A delicious paste made from toasted ground sesame, tahini has a unique nutty flavor and is most commonly used in Middle Eastern cuisine.

Though high in natural fat, tahini is packed with health benefits. Far from just being used for techina to top a falafel, tahini is used in smoothies, salad dressings, and even cocktails.

It’s becoming a popular substitute for peanut butter among people with nut allergies. Tahini’s versatility is its USP. It’s pareve, yet adds a rich creaminess to dishes and can be used in both sweet and savory recipes.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.

Melt coconut oil in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips and cocoa; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs and monk fruit sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla and salt and keep mixing until mixture has thickened. Add tahini and stir to combine, then fold in flour.

Pour half the mixture into a separate bowl. Add the chocolate mixture to one of the bowls and mix well.

Pour into prepared baking pan.

With a spoon, dollop remaining tahini mixture on top.

Use a skewer to swirl tahini mixture into chocolate brownie batter.

Bake for 30 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.

Make America Healthy Again Zucchini is another popular way of using vegetables as a pasta alternative. Sliced into ribbons or “zoodled” into spirals, it makes a great base for a pasta sauce—without the added calories.

Cabbage Lasagna Who would have ever thought that cabbage would become the darling of the kitchen? Boiled cabbage has that distinctive smell which can turn one’s stomach, but cooked correctly, it’s not only delicious but incredibly healthy.

Cabbage is now being used as a substitute for pasta, making for a healthy low-carb alternative.

This recipe uses leaves of cabbage to replace the lasagna strips. Even if you’re not usually a cabbage eater, don’t be put off by this recipe. I say take the gamble.

4 cups water 1 cabbage head, checked 2 Tbsp butter, for sautéing 1 onion, diced 6 garlic cloves, minced 4 frozen basil cubes 1 16-oz container ricotta or cottage cheese 1 Tbsp monk fruit sugar ½ tsp salt ½ tsp oregano 1 jar marinara sauce 1 pkg shredded mozzarella cheese Olive oil, for greasing Fresh basil, for garnishing

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large pot, boil water. Using tongs, dip each cabbage leaf into water for 30 seconds and place on a paper towel– lined plate to dry.

In a large frying pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions and sauté until translucent. Add garlic and basil; sauté for additional 2–3 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and add ricotta, eggs, monk fruit sugar, salt, and oregano; mix to combine.

Grease a baking dish with olive oil. Spoon a thin layer of marinara sauce onto the bottom of the dish. Add a layer of cabbage leaves, then top with more sauce, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella. Repeat layering twice more.

Bake until cabbage is tender and mozzarella is bubbly, about 25 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil.

Leafy Green Vegetables Kale, spinach, and broccoli are leafy green vegetables rich in both lutein and zeaxanthin, a plant-based form of vitamin A. These nutrients must be consumed as the human body cannot make them itself, but most people who eat Western diets don’t get enough of them.

These antioxidants act as a natural sunscreen for your eyes and protect them from harmful UV rays. They are very important for eye health and lower the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Sweet Potatoes Orange-colored fruits and vegetables—like carrots, butternut squash, mangos, cantaloupe, and apricots—are high in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, a nutrient that helps prevent dry eyes and night blindness and maintains vision health. While most people associate carrots with these benefits, sweet potato has more beta-carotene—and therefore vitamin A—than any other vegetable. One sweet potato also has more than half the vitamin C you need in a day and a small dose of vitamin E as well.

Raw Red Peppers Bell peppers are a nutritional powerhouse.

They give you the most vitamin C per calorie, and various carotenoids. Research suggests that they are good for the blood vessels in the eyes and could lower the risk of cataracts. Heat breaks down vitamin C, so go raw when possible. Brightly colored peppers also pack eye-friendly vitamins A and E. A large study found that vitamin E, together with other nutrients, can help slow age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It may also help prevent cataracts.

Bananas are also a source of vitamin A, which is crucial for eye health. Vitamin A protects the cornea, which is essential for good vision.

Your retinas need two types of omega-3 fatty acids to work right: DHA and EPA. These nutrients are crucial for maintaining healthy retina function. You can find both in fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and trout. Omega-3s also seem to protect your eyes from AMD and glaucoma. Low levels of these fatty acids have been linked to dry eyes.

Additionally, salmon contains antioxidants that may help protect the eyes from oxidative stress.

Zinc is plentiful in beef, chicken, and some fish, but if you prefer a vegetarian, low-fat, high-fiber option that may be easier to nosh on, don’t pass on the lentils or chickpeas on Friday night. More importantly, consider making your cholent with kidney beans for a healthy, hearty serving of eyesight-enhancing nutrition.

Add chunks of meat and enjoy that bowl of cholent guilt-free!

It’s a great package deal: The zinc in an egg will help your body use the lutein and zeaxanthin from its yolk. The yellow-orange color of these compounds blocks harmful blue light from damaging your retina.

They help boost the amount of protective pigment in the macula, the part of your eye that controls central vision.

As the new secretary of health, RFK Jr., announces an upcoming ban on all artificial, petroleum-based food dyes—fully chasing them out by the end of next year—mothers across America are becoming more aware of the need for healthier breakfast alternatives. What easy breakfasts would you suggest as replacements?

Esti Asher, MS, RDN, LD We love yogurt (unsweetened or lightly sweetened) with cut-up fruit (apples, banana, and frozen mango are our faves) and chocolate chips.

Depending on the kid, slivered almonds, oats, or craisins are added as well. Yes, you heard this dietitian right—in my humble opinion, chocolate chips (when used in moderation) are a yummy and balanced addition. The sweetness of both the chocolate chips and the fruit help counterbalance the taste of the plain yogurt.

Sheindy Unger, CDC The most common breakfast food that contains artificial food dyes is boxed cereals. Most of them have the additional disadvantage of too much added sugar. In many cereals, sugar is the second ingredient. For this reason, I don’t consider cereal a nutritious food in the first place. Healthier breakfast options are cooked cereals or a whole grain toast.

In my house, we are very into the kids eating bread every morning. A slice of whole wheat bread with some avocado or cheese goes a long way. My kids also adore my easy-to-make protein pancake recipe, which is nice and filling.

I love having nutritious high-protein muffins on hand in the freezer; those are great for grab ’n go! I try to make a nutritious pancake batter at the beginning of the week (think cottage cheese, oats, eggs) because once that’s done, the frying takes a few minutes. My kids also love making paninis in the morning; spelt sourdough and nutritious cheese is a great combo.

But truthfully, the fastest breakfast is quick oats with hot water poured over. I add milk, pure vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a splash of maple syrup.

Breakfast Protein Pancake 1 egg Less than ¼ cup flour Pinch sweetener of your choice 2 Tbsp. cottage cheese or Greek yogurt Splash vanilla

Pinch cinnamon Spray a pan with cooking spray and fry on each side until golden. You can also do this in the Betty Crocker.

This recipe makes one nice-sized pancake. Multiply if making for many.

I recommend smoothies with half a cup fresh fruit (any favorites work, including strawberries, peaches, bananas, etc.), one plain low-fat or nonfat Greek yogurt, some natural vanilla. For sweetness and texture, add a medjool date. If you like even more protein, add a teaspoon of toasted almond butter or a scoop of unflavored pea protein, such as Trader Joe’s.

Blend and add ice, or you can use ready frozen fruit chunks.

Pro tip: If you see you won’t eat all the fruit you purchased, cube, combine, and freeze in portionsized baggies before it goes bad. It will take a minute to make them from ready “smoothie packs.”

I like to top with cacao powder or cinnamon. Delish!

Vichna Belsky, BS, CLC I combine oatmeal and milk in a ceramic mug and microwave it for two minutes. I like to top it with chocolate chips or—to make it colorful—frozen, fresh, or dried blueberries or strawberries. Or craisins! Any combination of these make for a delicious breakfast.

Like many parents, I’m thrilled about the upcoming ban on artificial food dyes announced

by RFK Jr. While I wish it would extend to even more artificial preservatives and additives, this is a huge step forward for our kids’ health—and a chance for all of us to rethink breakfast.

Cereals are by far not the only breakfast option.

Here are some other ideas, in no specific order:

Getting kids out the door with a healthy start can feel like a daily battle (I know it does in my house!). But with a little prep and creativity, breakfast can be simple, fun, and free of artificial dyes. Here are some kid-friendly ideas that make mornings smoother:

Yogurts with healthy muffins

Eggs and crackers Oatmeal Smoothies And then there are healthy cereals—ones without dyes—and milk.

Smoothies—Your Morning Lifesaver Pro tip: Set out the blender and to-go cups the night before. Some parents even preload the blender with ingredients and keep it in the fridge or freezer—just blend and go!

Favorite combo: frozen banana, nut butter, and milk. It’s sweet, creamy, and always a hit.

Pancakes with a Twist Protein-packed and perfect for batch cooking.

Use almond flour or spelt flour for a nourishing base.

Kid-friendly tip: Add a few chocolate chips to make them more appealing; it works like magic.

6 eggs 1½ cups cottage cheese ¼ tsp sea salt ½ cup almond or spelt flour ¼ tsp baking soda Optional: cinnamon and vanilla Beat eggs until fluffy. Blend cottage cheese until smooth and mix with eggs.

An absolute favorite in my home is chia seed pudding.

The ratio is two tablespoons to half a cup milk, and here especially, advance planning is key. Prepared the night before, it’s delicious in the morning. Top with berries for a full and filling breakfast.

I also like to make my spelt pancake batter. I combine the dry ingredients in a large, tall container and mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. I then add the wet to the tall container and shake well to combine. I heat the Betty Crocker and the pancakes are done within minutes.

Add remaining ingredients.

Spelt Pancakes

Drop by spoonfuls on a greased skillet and cook over medium heat until golden and set.

1¾ cups spelt flour

Serve with maple syrup or fresh fruit.

Garlic, often referred to as a “culinary powerhouse,” offers an impressive array of nutritional benefits that go beyond enhancing the flavor of foods. Very versatile, garlic can be used in assorted forms and in many dishes. Whether you are using it in a spice shaker, a frozen cube, raw, or infused in oil, garlic has many benefits and has been used for medicinal purposes throughout history. Packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, garlic is not only a tasty addition to your diet but may also improve health or prevent various health issues.

Rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, and selenium, garlic boosts immune health, promotes heart health, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Garlic contains compounds like allicin, which are released when garlic is chopped or crushed. Allicin is believed to be responsible for many health benefits, including reducing cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, and acting as an antimicrobial agent.

Additionally, garlic is known to improve digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which research has shown contributes to better digestion and overall wellbeing.

Most notably, garlic is a powerful antiviral and antimicrobial spice which can help the body fight off infections. In fact, studies suggest that garlic consumption, especially in the form of supplements or raw garlic, can reduce the risk of getting colds and shorten the duration of symptoms. One study found that people who took garlic supplements had fewer colds than those who took a placebo, and their symptoms went away faster when they did get sick.

Although aged garlic extract supplements are a viable option, eating raw garlic cloves or adding them to dishes is the purest and simplest way to reap the benefits.

As far as flavor, garlic is known for its pungent, spicy bite when raw, which mellows and becomes sweet and savory when cooked. The aromatic and slightly earthy flavor of garlic adds depth to any dish, making it versatile for various cuisines.

Garlic works wonderfully in a variety of recipes such as sauces, pastas, soups, stews, and practically all protein. In addition, garlic can be added to homemade salad dressings, dips, and marinades, infusing them with its distinct flavor. Whether roasted, sautéed, or used raw, garlic enhances both the taste and nutritional profile of a wide range of meals.

By Tziri Hershkovitz When my daughter comes crying to me during playtime, it is easy to discern whether the tears were prompted by a physical altercation or whether they were brought on by hurt feelings. Invariably, intense crying is a result of an emotional upset. Being teased or ignored hurts a whole lot more than a skinned knee.

It is no different for adults. Bruised feelings are by far the more painful injury.

There are countless forms of emotional upsets, but when our hearts are hurt, there’s a lump in our throat, a throbbing ache in our heart, and a lingering pain reminding us of what was or what could have been. In those moments, the sky seems dark, as if no sunlight can ever truly brighten our world.

After a little while, though, the agony will surprisingly start to abate, but like a persistent hum of background music, the memory will hang around.

And then that pain starts to fade, too. We don’t necessarily wish it away, but time, the great healer, is also a great thief. As the days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, like a gentle eraser, time fades the edges and slowly softens the entire picture. Like an old photograph, the image might remain, but the vivid colors, the sharp pain of the moment, begins to mellow and fade. New experiences cover it up, not with the desire to delete, but with the intent to add warmth and perhaps a subtle shimmer of life.

Be it guilt, regret, embarrassment, shame, anger, fear, anxiety, heartbreak, longing, disappointment, or loss. At one point, we find we’re past it.

With each sunrise and sunset, time gifts us tiny increments of healing. A joyous family simchah, a child’s laughter, a blooming garden, the comfort of a familiar song—these small joys act like gentle balm on our spirits. They remind us that even amid the echoes of yesterday, life continues to unfold with its own sweetness.

Every morning, we thank Hashem for the gift of a new day, for the gift of the passage of time. It hurts to acknowledge that time, like life itself, is transient. So much gets lost in the sands of time…

But there’s comfort there, too.

A new day will dawn with its own sparkle, sunshine, and the promise of more beauty and healing unfolding…in its own sweet time.

With Lag B’Omer approaching, many adults and children are excited at the prospect of gathering around the glowing bonfires. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or family this year, it’s important to be mindful of how bonfire smoke can impact your lungs. With these tips, you can take steps to enjoy the meaningful aspects of the event while protecting your respiratory health.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai taught a profound truth: contending with negative influences within our homes is even more challenging than the prophesied war of Gog u’Magog. The Chafetz Chaim zt”l elucidated this idea, explaining that in the end of days, our battle for faith will rage both inside and outside our dwellings.

Let’s start with the basics: Why is bonfire smoke harmful? Bonfire smoke releases gases and fine particles from burning wood and other organic materials. These travel through the air and irritate your respiratory system.

While this can affect anyone, it’s especially harmful to those with conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, heart failure, or an irregular heartbeat. I suggest that you take the following precautions whether or not you have a preexisting condition. Talk to your children, too, about these safety measures.

The first way to protect the lungs is to maintain a safe distance, which will reduce inhalation of smoke and hot air. You can do this by standing away from the direction in which the smoke is blowing and far enough from the fire that you don’t feel the heat on your face or hands, a sign that you’re standing too close.

Second, those in charge of fire construction should opt to only burn wood or dry, natural plants. Throwing other items into the fire can release harmful chemicals that affect lung health and the environment.

Third, take breaks by stepping away from the fire periodically to give the lungs some respite from the smoke. This is especially important for children (whose lungs are still developing), the elderly, and anyone with preexisting respiratory conditions. By taking these simple precautions, you can protect your lungs while enjoying the celebrations.
