What a sad time for admirers of Queen Elizabeth. She was loved by many, many people, even those who are not fond of the Royal Family I turned on the TV to watch the news and to see all the pomp and ceremony of the Proclamation of King Charles III. It is going to take some time to get used to that for us and for him too, no doubt.

I bought a zucchini slice last week, and very nice it was too As I read the heating instructions, I saw a notice that said something like “all care had been taken to ensure that there were no bones in the product” The ingredients were zucchini, cheeses, eggs, bacon not a lot of bones there.

I heard a woman on the radio last week saying there is some sort of movement to revise fairy tales and films so that children don't get the wrong idea about the outcome of life's happenings Some of these stories might give the readers/watchers the idea that everything ends up happy ever after. Won't that squash imagination which is so important? The Billy Goats Gruff and the Hobyahs have had no lasting effect on me (that I know of).

Due to Mr Arthur Ritis (my partner), striking a match now is no longer a pleasure for me, as our good friend Rachel Buckley has explained to us.

I am another one who has also found today’s matches are nowhere near the quality of those from yesteryear. They were always a part of my younger days, (no gas or electricity at a farmhouse), they lay about in gutters and everywhere and back then, most were made in Australia. In the 1950s, I started collecting and swapping them, along with stamps and coins of course, among my penfriends all over the world. My travelling friends would bring home any they found, and of course in my own travels, I did as well Even in the few years I smoked, I used matches. Lighters had hardly been invented in those good old days, they also cost a lot of money, whereas matches were tuppence a dozen and could be found everywhere.

A dispute of a peculiar character between a very large number of the ratepayers and the Dunolly Borough Council has been causing a great deal of excitement recently in the locality The council was authorised last year to provide a fountain to be placed in the Gordon Gardens to commemorate the jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria No definite arrangement was made about the inscriptions to be placed on the memorial, although some suggestions were made. When, some months ago, the different parts of the memorial arrived at the local railway station, it was found that the council had had the names of all the members of the council placed on one side of the central marble block, occupying the whole of the space on this side The names appeared in bold black letters

husband had a transfer to the BBC in London where he was paid on an Australian wage index This happened with many expat Aussies who still worked under their Australian banner Even so, when it came to buying a house, the prices were still too high to afford anything but a small, average house. When I visited them on a trip over there in the ‘80s, I was surprised when they told me the very high price they had to pay, because they could have managed to buy a mansion back here.

Stories from Cynthia

Apart from those drawbacks, I loved living in London and my favourite job was my last and longest, because I was given leave to travel and return to the job That was at the BBC in the overseas news department at Bushy House, where I subedited the news to hand to the translators and we had a lot of fun

My sister in law and I visited England and travelled through Europe in the ‘80s When in London, we were able to stay at the Union Jack Club, for which servicemen and ex servicemen and their families were eligible. It was a pleasant enough place with heavy oak surrounds and rich, red carpet but the rooms were very Spartan. There were no towels or coat hangers supplied, with only a small cupboard, bed and table, no TV of course, and generally a room you only wished to enter for sleep, yet for the same tariff we could have stayed at the Paris Hilton in Melbourne.

P/L

Cynthia Lindsay

In between travelling, I worked with an agency, taking temporary jobs to fill in for people on leave etc and was most surprised to discover how many young married women could not afford to leave work to have a family, nor save enough to buy a house. Many years later, Anne Marie, one of the girls I lived and travelled with, married an ABC journalist back in Australia and later, her

AT BETTER THAN REASONABLE RATES

Eating out was not a regular occurrence for Londoners, as prices were prohibitive for the average wage earner; hence we read about so many English people holidaying in Spain, where everything was and still is, I believe, much cheaper. When my girlfriends and I were travelling in Spain, we found food, accommodation and petrol at half the price we paid in England

When we first found a place to stay in England, we rented an attic flat in Wimbledon and that was a quite reasonable rent, shared between three. Later, when moving to London we were lucky to find a smart flat in Notting Hill Gate, but could only afford that, because we had teamed up with a friend who was a doctor and had the lease on the flat. Consequently we were charged affordable rent, which otherwise would have been out of our reach.

Mobile

Going right back to the late ‘50s when I was living in London, I discovered that everything cost a great deal more than it did back home. Accommodation was extremely expensive and for example to stay in a very average hotel in London, with few extra amenities, the cost equalled a four or five star hotel in Australia.

Grease traps EPA LICENCE 5461

There were Spanish, Greek and Italian journalists in my department and I was always improving my language skills Sometimes we had a little banquet where the staff would bring in traditional food and we actually accompanied it with a glass of wine. The Editor-in-Chief was Charles Glass and when I was leaving to go home, everyone wrote messages in their language in a book, they then cut out a window on the first page and wrote, “From the Glass House to our departing guest” I loved that job.

The state of the economy throughout the world is not particularly healthy at present and the UK is no exception, indeed I believe they are in deep trouble. As I have no degree in economics and should I make any sweeping statements, a particular reader of the Welcome Record who is a good friend of mine, would shoot me down in flames, so these are merely some observations from my own experiences.

If the later plants are not needed, so much the better, it is only the loss of a few seeds

It is not too late to plant out long keepers or odourless onion plants (not seed). The main sowing of parsnips can be sown this month, they don’t mind a cold start to germinate and grow. Carrots sown this month could result in a good percentage of them running to seed before maturity October is the right month to sow the main crop of carrots All fine seed like firm soil, they will not germinate well when sown in very loose soil, as the seeds must have firm contact with the soil Greenfeast peas sown this month will grow rapidly and be ready to harvest in December They’re very good bearers and even a small sowing will give very good results The stalks make good mulch, and the space is available for another variety of Fveggie.orfrost

In the past few years, the Annual, plus the Performance report tabling has been deferred to December, due to COVID. We would welcome an update as to when these two reports will be tabled

situation and to clarify some issues. It is fantastic to see this happen, however should the Council have used community public consultation, and involved the community along the complete decision making process, this situation possibly may not have occurred We call on the Councillors and Council to open the path to more community involvement with development of projects and decision making With more transparency and community involvement CGR&RAI believe a lot of back pedalling will be avoided, and more trust and respect will be achieved We are looking for leadership from our Councillors and Council to steer us out of our poor ratings

A few weeks back we mentioned about some great communication by Council staff The outcome of those two issues: one resolved, the other still with no further communication, however, we will give more time for Council to finalise these issues Understandably Council will be busier over wet periods. Should you be not happy with the outcome from your conversation with a council representative, please take your concerns to your elected Councillor or contact the CEO Possibly they are unaware of the issue, or that other issues may have Wpresented.earelooking

With the past week of rain, we have been extremely lucky not to receive the torrents other areas throughout Australia have received This is a good opportunity for us all to take stock of the drainage situation around our Shire and tend to them, or report to the Central Goldfields Shire of any concerns Working towards making our Shire a complete all weather Shire is something we all need to be part of

One town which understandably would be keeping a very keen eye on the weather is Carisbrook On 4th October, 2022, at 7.30pm, following the CGR&RAI general meeting which starts at 7pm, there will be an open to the public presentation on the Carisbrook levee. The aim of this presentation is to inform the community of the levee journey, design, design changes, grants received and hopefully by then, Council will have provided an up to date expenditure report. Maybe Stage 4 will be completed by then However, with the present weather forecast, it could be a monumental task to achieve that. There are a lot of questions and uncertainty around this levee project, and the best way to tackle this is to understand the complete picture. This will not be a presentation fed by theory The presentation will be compiled from Council and the designers’ actual own data and releases Location Senior Citizens Hall, Urquhart St Carisbrook. All welcome.

The Heritage Victoria decision on the Station Project has raised a lot of community concern. From this, Council representatives have taken to social media to explain the
