Wattle time
It is one of the best times of the year right now. Wattle Time! The nondescript small trees and greyish shrubs have now cloaked themselves in glorious yellows and have become the belles of the bush. The red flowering gum which has been flowering at the back of my place for more than a month is lovely. I have been gloating over it for quite a while, but next to the glamorous wattle, the red flowers look very drab indeed. Within a week, they have gone from yellowish tinged buds to a beautiful bright yellow. The smaller and more delicate Cootamundra were the first to fully form, but the

black wattle with their bigger and bolder blooms were not far behind. The smaller shrub varieties such as the sticky wattle are a little slower, but those in a spot getting more sun are starting to put on their show too. Standing up at the town water supply on top of Basin Hill and looking down the gully towards Dunolly the wattles are magnificent. They draw your eye down and light up the otherwise uniform forest in an amazing way. When you go down the gully and look up to the top of the hill it is equally lovely. Continued on page 3
