Queen’s Birthday Festival returns to Dunolly

The Dunolly Queen’s Birthday Festival will feature two very special musical events. On Saturday 11th June is the concert with famed Tibetan singer-songwriter and flautist, Tenzin Choegyal at the Dunolly Town Hall.

On Sunday 12th June, it is rumoured that Queen Victoria is to be gracing us with her Royal presence along Broadway during the Dunolly Community Market. The Queen is readying herself for many photos with her subjects, who will no doubt wish her a Happy Birthday (she is very well preserved for her age, as she was born in May 1819).

The Queen will visit shops and businesses along Broadway and give Her Royal Seal of Approval. Look out for Her Majesty from 10am until 1pm at the Dunolly Community Market.

The Dunolly Queen’s Birthday Festival concludes on Monday 13th June, with a musical delight from opera singer Piera Dennerstein, by the fire in the Melba Lounge.

We are delighted to welcome acclaimed soprano Piera to Buckley’s of Dunolly. Together with pianist/composer Alisha Redmond and librettist Grazia Marin, they are known as the Ensemble Volante and are presenting their newly-recorded original work called “Regermination”.

Monday 13th June at 2pm. Donation of $25 per ticket, with proceeds going to the artists. Limited seating to this special event.

CK cat has made herself very comfortable, sound asleep in the lid of a 1,000 piece jigsaw box. Trouble is, about half the pieces are still in the lid.

When I was coming home from Maryborough in the late afternoon last week, the sun was getting low. As I was coming around the corner near Rachel's, I was blinded by a very bright light.

I did not think she would have a spotlight on at that time of the day, if she had one at all. When I went past the house, I realised that the light was just the sun reflecting off the historical notice on the side of the road. It would need the angle of the sign changed slightly, so it couldn't reflect. It is truly dangerous.

I was out for the day and thought I'd missed the planned power outage. However, when I was getting ready for bed, the lights went out. Had to go very carefully in the dark to find the torch. The time was 11.30pm. Then the penny dropped, and I checked the notice (by torchlight). I should have read it properly in the first place.

There is a song about smoke on the water, but I don't know if what I saw on the paddock over the road was smoke, or mist rising on the grass, but either way it was really pretty.

Emergency food relief The emergency food relief centre, run by Uniting, is still operating from the rear of the Dunolly Uniting Church every fortnight.

This relief has been operating through Uniting at Kangaroo Flat for many years, but due to the many donations received by Dunolly church members, it was decided to further expand the service to meet the many needs within the Dunolly population.

The service operates every second Thursday afternoon.

Many types of products are available, including tinned food, cereals, household and personal care products, fruit and vegetables, plus many more.

Please enquire at the Op shop if you or someone you know would benefit from this much-needed service.

Uniting relief assistance will again be in Dunolly on Thursday 2nd June from 2pm.

Praying Mantis The first article I read every week, inside the front cover of the Welcome Record is Rosie’s Ramble. She covers a lot of subjects, which are good to read about, but the one in last week’s paper, which I found interesting, was the one about the green grasshopper-like insect that she came across while pruning.

Being a keen gardener and nature-lover, I knew it well. I have those ones as well as the greyish/brown sort. Not that I see much of either one, as they are extremely good at camouflage. They are named Praying Mantis, because of their folded-up front legs, which are very long and used for hunting other insects.

These creatures can grow up to almost 5 inches (13cm) long. Their legs, as well as their bodies, are deceptively shaped like leaves. They lay eggs on a sturdy branch of a shrub and then build a nest around and on top of them, measuring about one inch around and coloured very pale green. The nest is soft at first but hardens up to look like it’s made from very thin layers of tissue paper.

The babies hatch inside, then chew and claw their way

out. They are very tiny and look like a bunch of little pins stuck together, however, they soon grow and help keep aphids etc out of our gardens. So, we are very lucky to have them. Keep up the good work Rosie.

My Ghosts of the Gold Rush One often hears of stories where people have unknowingly gravitated back to the areas where their ancestors once lived. This has certainly been my experience, as without even being aware at the time, circumstances prevailed where, nearly 17 years ago, I ended up moving to an area only a few kilometres from where one of my ancestors was buried. Growing up in Sydney, I had always known that my father and his parents had moved to NSW from Victoria in 1940 and that they were all descended from adventurous English and Scottish men and women who had followed their dreams of finding gold and a new life in Victoria. At the time, I knew that I had many ancestors and their families buried in cemeteries in Ballarat, Creswick, Campbells Creek, Smythesdale, Geelong, Horsham and in different parts of Melbourne and, together with my son, I had spent many years tracing the family history. I had, however, temporarily overlooked the fact that the burial place of one of my great-great-grandfathers and his infant son, was so close to Dunolly, in Timor.

William Newham, the son of a carpenter, was born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk in 1832. He arrived in Victoria in 1855, shortly afterwards meeting his future wife, Frances (Fanny) Manning, the daughter of a miller, who had recently arrived from Cambridge, England. They married in Geelong and moved to Sebastopol, where the first of their children was born. After searching for gold in the rushes around Ballarat for some years, the family, by then including seven children, of which my great-grandmother was one, eventually arrived at the Chinaman’s Flat diggings, close to Timor. As with many mining families, records have been unable to show when they arrived, how long they were there, or whether they found enough gold to eke out a living, however the move ultimately put an end to their dreams. Their next three children were born in Timor, however the second of these, George Ernest, died in 1875, aged six months. There was a widespread scarlet fever epidemic in Victoria during 1875/76, so without direct proof, I have concluded that may possibly have been the cause. Another boy, once again named George, followed shortly afterwards; thankfully he survived to adulthood. The harsh and unsanitary conditions on the goldfields resulted in the deaths of many children and their family would have been no exception. Unfortunately, William himself was to succumb to the perils of the harsh life and possibly a weak constitution and in 1877, he passed away in Maryborough Hospital at the age of 45. William and baby

George Ernest are both buried in lonely graves at Timor.

In some ways, I feel that by living so close and knowing the area where they had lived and died, I have been able to bring some life to their stories. It was interesting to realise that my grandmother’s mother, who I had heard a lot about, actually spent some years of her childhood there. I certainly feel very fortunate to be surrounded by so many ancestors in Victoria, together with their rich histories, to which I feel very connected. This is especially significant, as prospecting was the reason I had originally visited and relocated to this area.

Postscript: Following William’s death, Fanny, together with her younger children, returned to the Ballarat area and remarried in Sebastopol. After some years, she was widowed again, after which time she went to live at the home of one of her sons, William, by then a successful stationer in Castlemaine. She passed away there in 1906 and is buried at Campbell’s Creek. Her daughter Sarah, our great-grandmother, married Emerson Bowes, a longtime employee of the Ballarat Courier, they died in 1915 and 1922 respectively; both are buried in Ballarat.

Councillor Liesbeth Long In Dunolly and surrounding areas, we all know how important tourism is to our communities. Attracting tourists is one challenge, but ensuring they spend time and money within the Shire and its towns is another. This has become particularly important as communities recover from COVID, which saw the tourism industry come to a screeching halt.

This is why Council is installing new wayfinding signage in Dunolly. Wayfinding signage is any type of sign that gives directions. They exist to help a visitor find their way without lengthy explanations or complicated maps. They will often give other interesting information as well, such as interesting facts and/or historical anecdotes.

Planned in response to community feedback received during the development of the Community Township Plan for Dunolly and district, two new signs will be installed to help visitors find their way around Dunolly. The signs will include a map highlighting attractions and facilities as well

as information about various points of interest – this will help tourists explore Dunolly further.

Community consultation to help decide the design and the location of the wayfinding signs recently closed and it was great to have many community members taking the time to provide useful insights.

Based on this feedback, one sign will be installed in Broadway, whilst another will be installed in Gordon Gardens.

The next step is finalising the design to allow the manufacture and installation of the signage, which will hopefully be in August/September, of course depending on the availability of contractors.

The project is being funded through the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund. This will be another great boon for Dunolly, and I look forward to seeing the new signs installed in the near future.

99th Birthday Celebration Recently, I brought my mother to Dunolly to celebrate her 99th birthday. Trudy Camm (a former resident of Dunolly) now lives in Melbourne but when she lived in ‘the old home town’ as she likes to call it, her maiden name was Gertie Wood. Gert’s family home was the former London Chartered Bank, where she lived with her father David Wood, sisters Dorothy (Doss), Gwen and brother George.

Gert’s father ran a drapery store in Broadway, next to the Railway hotel. The shop is now the Welcome Stranger and Co. Gertie attended Dunolly Primary School and was taken to school on her first day by local Hazel Watts (deceased) and that is where she met her best friend of over 90 years, Edna Brownbill (nee Scarfe).

Gert also worked in her father’s shop, was a keen golfer and played competition tennis for Dunolly. Another favourite pastime was yabbying at Station Dam and she also pumped the bellows of the organ for her sister Doss, at St John’s Anglican Church.

Gert remembers sitting on the window sill of her house, watching them plant the palm trees out the front of the Royal Hotel. During WW2, a group of carpenters came to Dunolly to build the wheat silo and that’s when Gert met her future husband Jack Camm, at a dance in the Town Hall.

After some time in Dunolly, John was transferred to the Northern Territory to work on building an airstrip. Their romance continued by letter writing for two years, until Jack returned to Dunolly and married Gert at St John’s church on 28th April, 1945.

The happy couple then moved to Melbourne, but Gert has been a regular visitor to Dunolly over the years. She celebrated her 90th birthday in the Railway Hotel and this year returned for her 99th with her son Peter and daughter Judy.

Gert enjoyed lunch at the Gold and Grain Cafè, which used to be a building her father owned 80 years ago and she had a great chat with her half-sister, Trish McNaulty from Logan.

Peter and Judy took Mum in a wheelchair up and down both sides of Broadway and she recounted lots of memories, as well as naming all the shop keepers from 80 years ago. Gert’s father, David Wood was on the

Council for many years and was instrumental in getting the clock installed in the Post Office and the aeroplane propellor at the John Flynn Memorial at Moliagul.

Gert was excited to be able to come to the St John’s church 150-year celebration in December 2019 and she always talks affectionately about Dunolly and loves to come for a visit.

Central Goldfields Shire Council News Motorised scooter users The Motorised Mobility Device Strategic Plan 2022-2027 was adopted at this week’s council meeting (24/5). The Strategy identifies the needs of people who use motorised mobility devices in Maryborough and develops actions to provide better connections and safety of the users.

This strategy primarily focuses on motorised mobility device usage in the town of Maryborough as the majority of motorised mobility device users in the Shire are known to live, work and study in Maryborough.

Based on the community engagement and fieldwork findings, the vision developed for this Strategy is: “Motorised mobility devices, supported by well-designed infrastructure, enable members of the Maryborough community to safely and actively participate in community life and retain their independence.”

Central Goldfields Shire Councillor Grace La Vella said the Shire has a high number of residents who use motorised scooters as their primary mode of transport.

“We also know that we have an ageing population, and increasing disability usage, in the Central Goldfields, with the number expected to increase over the next decade,” she said.

“Therefore, it is integral to ensure we understand the needs of motorised mobility users and increase the safety by improving accessibility and providing education opportunities.”

In early 2021 Council received funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to prepare a scooter strategy and action plan for safe motorised mobility aid in Maryborough. The need for a Strategy was first identified by the Walking and Cycling Strategy 20172026.

The Draft Motorised Mobility Device Strategic Plan went on public exhibition from 27 April to 13 May to seek community feedback. Scooter users were also engaged through small group and one on one meetings and key stakeholders consulted through workshops.

The Strategy has been developed by consultants CommunityVibe and Cardno.

Supporting our sporting clubs in post-COVID recovery Council is playing its part in supporting local sporting clubs in their recovery from the pandemic, approving a 50 percent fee discount for the 2022/23 Financial Year at its Ordinary Meeting last week. There are numerous clubs across the Shire who use various facilities and the fees paid across these organisations range up to $12,000 per year.

As part of the COVID-19 support measures introduced

by Council in March 2020, associated fees were waived. Central Goldfields Shire Councillor Gerard Murphy said following the expiry of waivers for these clubs, Council has had contact from clubs wishing to reduce the fees to support COVID-19 recovery.

“We know it’s been a tough few years for all community and sporting groups and that’s why it’s important for Council to offer support,” he said. To ensure equity amongst clubs, a 50 percent discount in recognition of COVID recovery will be offered to all clubs. The financial impact to Council is $15,433.

Each of the clubs impacted will be contacted by Council officers. Additional funding has also been allocated in the 2022/23 Financial Year Budget for a review into Page 10 The Welcome Record — Wednesday 1st June 2022

Animal Registrations now overdue Pet owners are reminded that animal registrations are now overdue. If you are a dog or cat owner, you are required by state legislation to register your pet by 10 April every year.

Registering a dog or cat greatly improved the chances of it being returned if it became lost. Council's Compliance team will commence doorknocking across the Shire from late May to check your pets are registered - the fine for non-registrations is $363.

To avoid a fine, pet-owners are encouraged to register their pet as soon as possible. The cost to register a desexed cat or dog is $37 and if you hold a pension card the cost is $18.50. For pet registration renewals, residents can pay their animal registration via: ∑ BPay; online or by telephone. ∑ In person — Central Goldfields Shire Customer Service Centre, 22 Nolan Street, Maryborough between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. ∑ Mail — cheques can be mailed to PO Box 194, Maryborough, 3465.

Firearm storage laws set to change in Victoria

Changes are on the way for how Victorians are required to store their firearms, and local police are encouraging residents to ensure their storage is up to scratch ahead of time.

The changes, set to happen at the end of August, will apply to all Victorian firearm owners and Maryborough Police Leading Senior Constable Jason Browning said it’s important locals are across the new requirements.

“This is a big change that probably should’ve been done a long time ago,” he said. “The majority of people are complying and have good safes, but there’s still the occasional person who has firearms stored in a clothing locker or home made wooden safe in the cupboard — they’re the ones we’re trying to get rid of because they’re too easy to break into.

“We really want to get this information out to gun owners because we do regular inspections of safes, and we want people to be ready and up-to-date with regulations before we get there.”

The changes will come into effect from Tuesday 30th August 2022 and are that: ∑ Firearms must be stored in a purpose-built steel storage receptacle ∑ The steel must be of a thickness of at least 1.6 mm. ∑ If the receptacle weighs less than 150 kilograms when it is empty it must be bolted to the structure of the premises.

∑ The receptacle must be locked with a lock of sturdy construction when the firearm is stored in it.

Firearm owners are urged to check their storage meets the new requirements. For further details, visit www.police.vic.gov.au/firearmstorage or contact the western region divisional firearms officer on 5448 1307.

Penalties for failing to comply with storage requirements can include terms of imprisonment ranging from 12 months up to four years while fines can range from $10,904 up to $43,618.

John Tully’s Dunolly Street Names Military names When Dunolly was formed the big recent news was the Crimean War with Russia. News that Great Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire won the war arrived a month before the rush to Dunolly. Dunolly honoured the event with street names.

LAWRENCE STREET: General Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence 1806-1857 was the first Governor General of Oudh in Northern India. When the Siege of Lucknow started in May 1857 he was the commander. Two months later he was killed during the battle HAVELOCK STREET: General Sir Henry Havelock 1795 -1857 relieved Lucknow two months after General Lawrence was killed. Lucknow became surrounded again trapping the relief troops. Havelock died there of disease in November 1857.

Councillors & other officials DESMOND STREET: John Desmond councillor 18651884 and 1887 - 1906 mayor six times.

CLARK STREET: Donald Clark, Bet Bet Shire councillor 1946-1979, mayor three times.

WOOD STREET: David Wood councillor 1949-1963, mayor 1954 .

These were good councillors and the street names justified. But what of the other streets named after public officials.

Another theme in naming the first streets in Dunolly was to name the streets after officials in the town. This gave us the east west streets of Bull, Thompson, Hardy and Orme.

BULL STREET: Captain John Edward Newell Bull 18061901 gold warden at Dunolly 1856.

THOMPSON STREET: George Agar Thompson 18241860 gold warden at Dunolly 1856-1857.

HARDY STREET: Philip Dixon Hall Hardy 1823-1858 magistrate at Dunolly 1856-1857.

ORME STREET: Francis Knox Orme 1817-1891 magistrate in Dunolly from 1862.

Was Thompson Street justified? Thompson whilst in Dunolly was described in the newspaper as an imbecile.

On another occasion when he had to inspect a prospecting claim in order to grant it he stopped at a sly grog tent.

Then after a few drinks decided it was too hot to ride further so he went back to town. He was an alcoholic. At Inglewood in 1860 he suicided by cutting his throat with a razor.

New vision and era for healthcare in region Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) has officially launched its strategic plan marking a new era of innovative healthcare for Maryborough and the wider region.

Chief Executive Officer Nickola Allan and Board of Management Chair Kelly Mason today unveiled the Maryborough District Health Service Strategic Plan 2021 – 2025.

The plan outlines an ambitious vision to change to the healthcare story with the community at an exciting time of transformation in the region.

It builds on a rich history and a strong commitment to providing best practice patient-centred care to improve health outcomes in the region under four main goals.

The strategic pillars are: Connecting our community to care, Purposeful partnerships, Our team and Sustainability.

The master plan will enable MDHS to work with patients, carers and partners to: ∑ Provider better access to the right treatment at the right time. ∑ Ensure people feel safe and supported when using the service. ∑ Help residents live longer, happier and more connected lives, and ∑ Reduce length of stay in hospital by getting clients back to health and home sooner.

“In a 168-year history for Maryborough District Health Service, few moments have been as critical as now, as we emerge from a pandemic and look ahead to the rest of the 21st century,” said Nickola Allan, Chief Executive Officer.

“The need for innovation in healthcare has never been more important, and we are thrilled to be officially launching our new strategic plan today. “This is not a onedimensional document that gets pinned to a wall. This strategy is the basis of a powerful new story for Maryborough and the wider region.

“While it won’t be easy, we are well-placed to tackle some of the long-standing social and health challenges in our communities - to help change the story,” said Mrs Allan.

“We have a strong passionate team and partnerships behind us to connect our community to quality care, and significant investment to expand and redevelop Maryborough Hospital.”

A $100 million Victorian Government investment in the redevelopment of Maryborough Hospital will bring new state-of-the-art facilities, programs, services and jobs to help meet the growing demand and address workforce challenges.

Maryborough District Health Service developed the strategic plan to meet with needs of people living in the Central Goldfields and Pyrenees Shire based on extensive community consultation. This included feedback from 170 staff and more than 100 community members, as well as partner agencies. “We see ourselves as a bridge between the people in our community and their wellbeing. “The community and patient experience is at the heart of everything we do, and we have worked with great care to listen and embed this feedback in our plan,” said Mrs Allan.

“On top of that we’re also investing in research to better understand the patient journey and how we can create or co-design new approaches to how we deliver care.

“These community-led insights hold the potential for MDHS to lead the region in healthcare and pave the way for innovation across other hospitals and healthcare

providers,” she said. “Real change requires a team effort and we are well supported by our partners including community groups, service providers, and government and education organisations.”

MDHS Board of Management Chair Kelly Mason said the board is excited about the opportunities ahead to provide a more sustainable and better healthcare experience.

“This is a very special time for Maryborough District Health Service and our community.

“In the coming months, you will see many exciting developments which are shaped by a new vision, purpose and promise to deliver great healthcare, which are backed by a clear action plan, a dedicated team and strong partnerships,” said Ms Mason.

“You will begin to feel the changes in how MDHS delivers care to positively transform the region with initiatives such as a new model of care for maternity services and new technologies to improve clinical systems and telehealth services.”

Travelling back to New Guinea, where Billy and friend Peter are working for a Sydney company finding gold, we find them in the jungle mingling with the local natives and joining in their activities. One day they were told the men planned to kill a pig. As the two friends walked down the riverbank, they heard the pig screaming and went to discover the poor animal’s fate, only to see the natives tying the pig on to a big branch and hanging it upside down. Billy was a bit dismayed and hoped they were not going to kill it. He and Peter gathered their work gear and headed off on their gold search, when they came to a clearing to see a big fire roaring. They found that the pig had been chopped up into big chunks, not neatly cut, as would be expected, then thrown on to the fire. Not a very pleasant sight.

The two men continued on to their work site, where they remained for four or five hours, then setting off for home.

On the way back, they came across the fire and now there were chunks of barbecued pig, charred and black as the ace of spades, certainly not very palatable.

Arriving at their lovely little native dwelling, they sat down to relax with their Sydney boss who was visiting, when two natives arrived carrying a large banana leaf containing a big black lump of the pig. They threw it on the table, saying the word “Eat” and then left. They thanked the men and promised to eat it later. The boss asked Billy whether he fancied it and Billy said, “we can only sample it and try.” So, Billy scraped some black off the meat, then carved a slice and thought it didn’t look too bad. They eventually decided to save it for the next day, when Billy made a curry, which turned out to be very tasty.

Next day, the chief’s wife came to pick up the laundry which the women had taken down to the river to wash; she saw the curry and asked about it. Billy then gave her a taste and she decided it was delicious; she had never before tasted anything like it. As a result, the head lady deemed Billy an excellent cook and often came down to see what he was making.

One day, this lady told the two men that the villagers were planning a Sing Sing for them. She explained that they had a big green grass circle where council meetings and other matters were held and now, they were planning a big Sing Sing for the visitors. When Billy and Peter arrived, all the villagers were sitting around the green circle; the two men were told that they must remain standing and hold hands. Peter said to Billy, “You’d better not tell anyone back home about this” and Billy just laughed. The man holding hands with Billy on his other side was the local policeman! Then a native, painted completely white, appeared and danced about, suddenly turning and running full pelt at Billy, seeming certain to bowl him over. Billy held his ground, waiting for the crash, but then the dancer stopped right in front of Billy, stared into his eyes, then smiled and danced off.

One of the elders went over to Billy and explained that it was a test and had Billy moved, then he wasn’t very brave. Since he held his ground, that proved his bravery and the men would respect him. Whew, thought Billy, that’s a relief!

Then a very old man approached Billy and asked from where he came and when he heard he was from Australia, he started crying and hugging Billy. He then told Billy he had been a soldier in WW2 and the Australians had saved him.

It would seem there has never been a dull moment in our Waistcoat Willy’s life.

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc. With the Federal Election results still undecided, the November State Election looming, and heading to the end of the financial year, it is probably a good time to get all our projects and reports in order.

At the 24th May Council meeting it was mentioned by a Councillor about misinformation being reported, the Council staff are highly qualified and the Council should be approached about obtaining correct information.

Over the past six months some Councillors have publicly stated that reports by CGR&RAI and others around the Annual Report, Skate Park, Splash Park and Carisbrook levee offered misinformation. Yet those Councillors did not offer the correct information to rectify what is deemed by them as misinformation.

Do you feel rather than correcting the error it seems some Councillors are more intent on telling people your information is incorrect instead? CGR&RAI have a policy of not making statements on issues without requesting clarity from Council. With no adequate response from Council on the issues being returned, we then decided to publish what is in Council's own data with our report.

The question we have is: If the reports Council publish are incorrect, then why vote to approve it and publish it, and why did Councillors not offer the correct information they use to make their accusation of misinformation?

Last week one Councillor claimed we used misinformation and (in a first) offered information around it. Well done for that. But when we asked for more information, he referred us back to Council, who at this stage still will not answer our concerns. Once again gaslighting and not supplying answers.

We now have Councillors stating the Council staff are of high quality and we can rely on their reports. Yet we are told many Council reports are incorrect. Just three months ago, Council published an amendment to the 2020-21 Annual report and it had four major obvious errors, yet was submitted, passed by Councillors, then signed by the Auditor General.

We have been pursuing the Skate Park, Splash Park and the Carisbrook levee updates since Dec 2021, and the Annual Reports 2019-20 since last year. Still no firm reply from Council — just continuing changes in the reports if we get a reply. We ask Council to please inform the

community of Carisbrook the actual plans for the levee, and also answer all the questions the community have, to give confidence to the community that they are in safe hands. We believe since the Council's alterations to the original plans from 2016, there have been many questions and concerns now on five different areas which were not of concern originally.

The main concerns we believe, are the culverts under Pyrenees Hwy, Stage 3, the Pleasant St Levee design itself, and the direction of water after (if) it goes through the Pyrenees Hwy culverts down to the creek, also the creek clearing.

It appears that Stage 4 plans do not have overflow culverts at Belfast Street or Williams Road, which was also drawn on the original plans. We are of the belief the funding has been allocated and has been available since May 2021 and it is there for the Council to claim. Yet progress is continually on again, off again.

We are sure the Council and Councillors are tiring of the continual mention of the levee issue. Most of Council and Councillors have only lived with the levee issue for a few years. The community has lived with flood issues since 1999. Is it time this was put to rest? The funding is available, as it was in 2016, is it only right that this time we have the levee completed and correctly.

This is a very big issue and we ask Council and Councillors to actually address these issues and resolve these situations. Simple - follow your own communication, transparency and accountability policies, — not make unhelpful statements with no adequate answers offered.

On 1st June, the Council's re scheduled Maryborough Major Reserve Master Plan Draft report is open for public submission at the Maryborough Hub at 4 pm and another session at 6 pm. Well done to Council for this.

Already there have been concerns around the Councilnominated Project Control Group, who guided the outcome around local knowledge and conflict of interest.

We are sure this will be discussed as this issue continues.

Increasing it from one to two meetings is a very welcome decision.

Tarnagulla & District Golf Club Inc Hello to Tarnagulla & District Golf Club members, supporters, families and friends, We're having the Queen's Birthday Bash on the Saturday morning of the Queen's Birthday weekend. Everyone is very welcome. This will be a fun event where we play Stableford Pairs, teeing off around 9.30 to 10am. Even if you've never played Stableford before, just play in pairs and each record your score for each hole. Then we work out, using your handicap, the Stableford points, which can be plus or zero points for each hole. The points for each pair will be added up by us at the clubhouse.

Come along and enjoy the course, as it’s playing so beautifully. The course looks a treat and we thank the wonderful volunteers who keep it looking marvellous. It's always invigorating to walk around the course and enjoy the bush, the bird life, (often the kangaroos) and the fresh air. Of course, talking to friends as you play the round, and afterwards sharing laughs in the clubhouse, is a treat.

The Entry Fee is $15 per person or free to all Members.

Membership is $80 (can vote at AGM) or $50.

School children are free. I should also say that you can play golf all year round at the course — free each day to members and school children and $5 per day for nonmembers.

150th Game Last Saturday Melanie Schodde played her 150th game at Dunolly in a stunning win over Carisbrook. Mel first joined the club in 2008 and was successful in playing in two premiership sides.

Since then Mel has been a reliable steadying influence in the mid court for the A grade team. Mel is a tireless worker at the club these days. You will find her of a Saturday at the game around 8.30am where she is the super talented, inspiring and patient coach of the 11 and under team. Mel is then often donning the ‘whites’ to umpire before she gets to entering the results. Mel then plays her game and concludes the day around 4.30pm finishing up the administration side of things for the netball department.

When she’s not doing that, Mel is baking for the club, coaching juniors in the Maryborough competition, and various other admin duties during the week.

Mel has three daughters who were lucky to share her big day. Congratulations on your 150th game and for being a wonderful volunteer at the Dunolly Football Netball Club.

Dunolly Football Netball Club news U 14.5 Football Report A nice sunny morning had the 14s pumped and raring to go against a strong Carisbrook outfit.

With super coach Hayden Wellard off to bigger ventures for the weekend, the young group got a new face to take over the reins for the day!

The day started as it ended, with the young eagles eager and cracking in for all 4 quarters, a very proud effort and unfortunately the scoreboard didn’t reflect how hard everyone tried. A massive thank you to Carisbrook for lending us enough players to fill the side at each quarter.

The best player for the day was Captain Isaac Scott, Zane Tyzack also tried hard all day.

A learning experience for all and as a senior coach I’m very keen to see these guys stick around and improve as footballers and become great young men. Thanks again for the opportunity. Onto next week.

Rhys Brown Seniors Coach Reserves Report A difficult day was presented to a makeshift Reserves Team with injury, illness and availability proving challenging issues to overcome as we welcomed a inform Carisbrook team to the nest.

Welcoming players from far and wide to put a side together, the return of Retired Assistant Coach Gavin Prigg, recruitments of Steve Fulton (wanting to show his son the way his football is played, while his son waited for his hamstrings to give out from the sidelines), and Matthew Goodwin gave the side some enjoyment, heading into what they knew would be a tough day.

Mitch Goodwin was handed the reins over the bench and rotations for the game, for once putting him in the position of power over his old man Matthew Goodwin in instructing him on the way to play. He was backed in his efforts by what seemed like the rest of the Senior side, keen to make a fun day of it in trying circumstances.

An initial goal to Gavin Prigg courtesy of a Carisbrook clearance in the wrong direction, followed by some exciting clearance work, gave the side some hope early before being overrun by a very strong Carisbrook, throughout the rest of the day, in a game that provided very few scoring highlights for the team.

One was afforded the opportunity to get himself a consolation prize at the end of the game but rushed his kick to put it well wide, giving his players a perfect lesson on the way not to kick at goal.

Best Players on the day were Grant Raven, Jackson Goodwin & Cooper May. Andrew Bearpark, Reserves Coach Seniors Report Dunolly v Carisbrook Injury and illness-ridden; we knew from the outset that overcoming a strong Carisbrook outfit was going to be no easy task.

We went into the game with belief in the 22 players we had selected and the feeling amongst the group was positive.

We started well, as we have in most matches, kicking the first goal through Joel Fisher. After controlling the play for the most part of the first quarter, we went into the first break with a three-goal deficit; lacking the ability to convert from our forward entries.

Ben McKinley set the tone early in the second quarter, showing why he has been such a valuable pickup for the

club. He continued his good form for the remainder of the game. Carisbrook extended their lead by five goals in the second quarter, due to small lapses at times. Our midfielders were competing well, breaking even, if not winning the clearance count, this being heavily impacted by the competitive nature of Oscar Keogh and Max Ryan in the ruck.

The feeling was still good at coming out from the main break, we were playing some good football; we just needed to do so for longer periods of time. It was no secret that third quarters had been our Achilles heel so far this season, something we were determined to change.

Kicking the first two goals of the quarter, more and more belief ran through the group, slowly chipping away at the margin. The remainder of the quarter was evenly poised, Carisbrook increasing their lead by nine points.

A win was out of the picture heading into the last quarter, but we knew Carisbrook were one of the benchmarks of the competition and we had been playing well, all things considered. We were determined to finish the game off.

Cannot fault the endeavour, effort and heart that we finished off this game with; something to take into future games, some very pleasing signs.

Final scores being 25.13-163 to 11.7-73. Four goals and three goals to Joel Fisher and Ben McKinley respectively while the two also lead our better players for the day on top of Oscar Keogh and Rhys Brown.

Dunolly Football Netball Club news President’s Report What another great home game day! I would like to thank Carisbrook for a great game over netball and football. We had a great turn out from both clubs. I would also like to give a big thanks to all volunteers and sponsors. Our auction night went off with a bang!! A HUGE thank you to all people who donated to the auction and all the people that dug deep that bought items.

It will go a long way to making our club the best we can be.

Next week we play Trentham at Trentham. The following week is a bye but then, hold your horses, we play at home against Talbot on 18th June. That evening we will be having a Trivia night hosted by our very own Jamie Townsend, (Football Manager and Vice President. Netball report The 11s girl came up against a very strong Carisbrook team. But with some fantastic team plays were able to run away with a narrow 12-10 win. Incentives were hard to give because everyone did such a fantastic job, but Melody stood out and was awarded this week's incentive.

13s: Continued on from the 11s with a really strong game.

Once again each and every player contributed to the game with a great win, 27-20. Incentives were awarded to Charlotte, Za and Claire.

15s: It was a very even start with the ball going back from one end to the other. The game turned a little scrappy and Carisbrook were able to capitalise on this and run away with the win 11-19. Incentives were awarded to Nhykita and Rose.

17s: It was a very physical game for the girls but they put in a really strong effort. Unfortunately, they went down 925.

C Grade: put in their strongest performance of this season The team is really beginning to gel and show some fantastic passages of play. Went down 13-39. Incentives were awarded to Cinta and Karina.

B Grade: was another physical contest. Both ends of the court were working really hard, but unfortunately Carisbrook were too strong. We went down 20-55.

Incentives were awarded to Serena and Hayley.

A Grade: Started the game strong and confident and took the lead early on. We were able to keep up the intensity

and gradually build on our lead to run away 10 goal winners. Taking the game out 50-40. Kate and Ash were awarded the incentives.

Milestones continued this week with Jade Marsden playing her 50th game Congratulations Jade! Keep your eyes peeled as we have some more junior legends reaching milestone games next week.

Keep your eyes peeled on our socials in the coming days for the announcement of The Future Stars Program. We will be running a program similar to Net Set Go and Auskick for boys and girls aged between 5 to 12.

Central Highlands Historical Machinery Society Tractor Trek Last Saturday, the Dunolly Vehicle Club Inc welcomed members of The Central Highlands Historical Machinery Society on their Tractor Trek.

Some of the historic tractors and their owners came from towns covering a wide area, including St Arnaud and as far away as Shepparton.

After a parade down Broadway, where they were viewed by interested onlookers, the convoy stopped over for a

breather and checked out Ned’s Shed on Broadway.

After a few cups of tea and chats with our members, they moved on to Waanyarra for a stopover on their return journey. Our Club, which is still in its relatively early stages, is looking forward to many more visits from other vehicle and machinery clubs in the future.
