Tiny Towns Arts Trail Portrait Prize Winner Congratulations to Val Wilkinson for receiving the most votes for her work, Birds with Attitude Series: Cockle Creek Currawong, and for winning the Tiny Towns Arts Trail Portrait Prize. In total, we counted 180 votes and we were very excited to find out who the winner was; although there were clear favourites over the weekend, it was impossible to know which artwork would be the final winner. The votes were so diverse and every single work got multiple votes. This is why art is so wonderful. It’s subjective and you can never know what people will respond to. Val’s work (both pieces) clearly spoke to a lot of people. Between them, they got the most votes overall, but the currawong’s intense stare and major attitude got him over the line as the definite favourite. I was personally very taken by Fiona Rogers’ tiny portrait of her goat Evon and I felt her piece, Portrait of the Block, was just so evocative and creative. It was quite hard to choose between them to be honest. In the end Evon, the goat of good luck, got my vote because I loved the simplicity of the brushwork and I adore goats. “It’s so hard to choose!” was actually the most common phrase we heard from people, when they were told to cast their vote for their favourite artwork. Lynda Vater’s beautiful mosaic sculpture had a real wow factor that connected with a lot of visitors. Lynda’s work received the second highest vote count after Val’s painting. People also really loved Monique Gavriladis’ four portraits of television and movie characters and if we’d tallied the results on the artist and not just the single artwork that received the most votes, Monique

would have only been one vote shy of winning after Val. Monique is only 18 and we hope she keeps painting, because as she gets more experience and miles on her brush, she will keep getting better and better. Everyone did a great job and we’d really like to express our appreciation to all the artists who entered their work and for all the wonderful

interpretations that evolved out of the concept of the portrait. It definitely wasn’t the Archibalds (thank goodness) but we had fun and we hope everyone else did too. Thank you again to The Welcome Record for generously donating the prize money and for all the support provided to Tiny Towns Arts Trail.
