Welcome Back Golden Triangle Archers Golden Triangle Archers had their first shoot for the year, last Sunday 27th March. Shoots are normally held on the fourth Sunday of each month, however due to Government regulations and some recent equipment theft, the shoots have been on hold. More than 20 enthusiastic archers, including some new members, were keen to take the opportunity to practise their skills. All enjoyed two rounds of the nine-course target, followed by a sausage sizzle.

If you are looking for a family-friendly place to visit in Dunolly, be sure to add this venue to your list. Shoots start at 10am. Equipment can be hired at a minimal cost; you will need to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Friendly archers are willing to assist you and your first shoot is free.

It seems I was not the only one who received multiple notices about the power outage last week. Just about everyone I've spoken to got them. Is this how our hard earned money that goes to pay our bills is used — or did the Powercor computers have a communal hissy fit?

I saw on the TV that we throw 23 kilos of clothing in the rubbish every ten minutes! Once again I want to know who is putting my 23 kilos in the rubbish — most of the clothes in my wardrobe have been there for many years.

It is probably the same person who is drinking my beer and smoking my cigarettes.

My hoya has bloomed for the first time this year — just one flower so far. The plant must like living in the corner outside the kitchen door as it is trying to do the hoya thing and take over the whole wall. It gets fed on banana peels and watered occasionally. It is the lovely pink waxy flower.

I bought a container of artificial flowers from the op shop last week. When I got them home I noticed there were several carved wooden tulips among them. I haven't seen anything like them before. There were some little round things in the bottom of the container that looked like fish eggs. I put some water on them to soak them off.

In the morning, to my surprise, the little balls had swollen up and have now grown to the size of peas. Every time I put water on them they swell up some more. I think I'll have to stop the water in case they escape and take over like the Triffids. I think they are meant to swell up and hold flowers in place in a vase. If anyone out there knows what they are, I would like to hear from them.

The website looks a little bit different, so I have provided some screen shots. When you first access the home page you will see a blue tab “View our Current Issue” at the bottom of the screen. Last Thursday evening a free information was held at the Dunolly Neighbourhood Centre. These sessions will help you prepare for what to do in the case of flood, bushfire, storm or heatwave.

Central Goldfields Shire Council has partnered with Loddon Council to host these free sessions. The events are supported by CFA and SES. If you missed this session there are additional sessions planned for the near future and will be communicated shortly. Registration is not necessary.

The Welcome Record has operated for over 40 years, producing an informative community paper, due to the selfless dedication of volunteers from Dunolly and the surrounding area. The face of the paper has changed dramatically over this time and the volunteers have been the ones who have been instrumental in bringing about these changes. Over time, people move on for a variety of reasons and there have been many changes, although some volunteers even end up returning, after a break of several years.

From time to time, we ask for new volunteers for either office or Committee positions, so if you are thinking you would like to be part of a community organisation and spend a few hours each week or month assisting in the production of the paper, or as a committee member, you would be very welcome.

There is a variety of tasks where you would be of great assistance to us, so if you are interested, please contact our President, Jan Brock on 0438 180 752. Thank you.

Fond farewell

Would just like to say a massive congratulations to our juniors on their efforts at the State Championships held in Mooroopna. Their efforts throughout the day were completely amazing, and we couldn’t wipe the smiles off the boys faces. Would also like to thank Beazley Bridge for accepting them to run under their amazing leadership.

Last Friday night in Dunolly, the ever-popular Railway Hotel was packed with locals and visitors for Happy Hour, when Trent rang the bell and announced to us all that he, Karyn and John were saying goodbye to their valued customers because the pub had been sold. Trent and his parents stated that they want to thank the many people who have come through their doors over the past six or more years and enjoyed their service. They look upon them as very happy years and made sure that it was always considered a family pub. In return, I know that the residents of Dunolly most appreciated the reopening of the Railway Hotel and the good and friendly service meted out to all. We would like to wish them the very best in their retirement but it’s not goodbye, as Karyn, John, Trent and Megan have their own homes in the town and plan to stay, so we will still see them about.

Dunolly Golf Club Thanks to the hard work of members over the past few weeks, the golf course is looking good for the 2022 season. The flags are being put out this week, so the course will be open for play by the weekend. We need some more rain, but conditions will be okay for that much needed practice prior to official opening. At the moment, we intend to have our first official round on Saturday April 9th.

This season we will be having a slightly different format each Saturday. We will have our normal 18 hole competition, but we will also run a 9 hole competition concurrently. This is to take into account the fact that we have a number of beginners, a number of senior players, and a number of members who prefer a more social approach to the game.

Anyone who wants to play golf at any level will be catered for, and we encourage anyone who is interested in a game to come along and have some fun, whilst keeping fit and socialising with others of similar golfing ability, or lack thereof! The Weekend Prospector films in Dunolly

The Weekend Prospector TV series was in Dunolly last week. They spent two days filming in the Dunolly Museum and out in the forest. This whole half hour episode is based on Dunolly.

Geologist Andrew Bales is the host of The Weekend Prospector. Andrew is a regular visitor to Dunolly where he holds geology courses. This show is now in its fourth series and has worked its way up to be one of the most popular programs on 7mate.

Andrew intends returning to do another Dunolly based story in the next series.

New Mural for Dunolly

Some may have recently seen signs of activity outside the old blue bank building in Broadway; the last business to operate from there being the gold detecting shop, GoldSearch Australia, who were the sole Australian distributors for White’s Metal Detectors. People and times have moved on and the exterior of the building is about to take on a whole new life. Paul, the owner, has given his blessing to an idea which will be yet another drawcard for heritage tourism and the arts in Dunolly. Last weekend, the White’s sign was taken down, also an end of an era, as the company no longer exists. Local PMAV (Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria) members then spent many hours cleaning the wall in preparation for an exciting new mural relating to the history of the area. An artist has been commissioned and it is anticipated that work will commence within the next few weeks. We will provide further updates closer to the time, so please watch this space!

Tiny Towns Art Trail Update

The Tiny Towns Arts Trail is all set to go again this Anzac weekend, 23rd, 24th and 25th April 2022. This is our sixth year and our wonderful People’s Choice Portrait Prize is on again.

Central Goldfields Shire Council News Mayoral Column In early March, the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal made a Determination on the allowances payable to Councillors, Deputy Mayors and Mayors.

Importantly the Determination report has a considerable amount of useful information on the role of elected officials and some key observations are highlighted in this column.

Local Government has wide-ranging responsibilities under more than 120 pieces of legislation ranging from land-use planning to domestic animal control and environment protection. Councils spend over $7 billion on service delivery annually and $2 billion on infrastructure.

Councils manage over $70 billion in public assets and employ over 50,000 people.

In addition, the Government sets out added priorities for the sector which include social and economic recovery from the pandemic and cultural change in local government, including creating a safer and more welcoming environment for women.

The Tribunal quoted several findings from elected Councillors suggesting increased workload and complexity " it feels like the workload is growing and we are being asked to make more and more major decisions about a range of things."

The report showed average hours for Councillor’s duties were 16-23 hours a week with Mayors allocating 40+ hours a week.

The Tribunal concluded "the scope and complexity of a Council member's role has increased significantly in recent years. The role of Mayor is a full-time commitment," noting especially the critical relationship between the Mayor and CEO. Essentially, the Tribunal Report recognises a rapidly changing society and its impact on local government.

Mike was thrilled with the turnout for our first archery session last Sunday, 22 people were excited to return at last!

We’re slowly gathering our equipment after the theft of last year; the next step is to purchase some 3D targets from our supplier. It’s awesome to see things come back from being dormant so long, and I would like to thank Mike for his dedication and hard work on the range behind Deledio Reserve. It’s situated in a beautiful bush setting, and he has put in such an enormous effort to tidy it up and ensure the safety of participants. Call me at the Centre for more information.

Due to the current COVID situation in Victoria, the Chief Health Officer has advised that all Neighbourhood Centres must ask all adults for proof of vaccination for all our non-essential activities.

Government forms and applications

This week, I will be helping one of our lovely residents apply for the disability pension by using an online form.

Many government services seem to be online only these days, and face to face assistance is hard to find. I will make every effort to be of assistance if anybody in our community needs it. I know that online forms can be a bit of a puzzler, and sometimes it helps to have a cheerful assistant to get the ball rolling for you. If you need to reapply for your disability parking permit, I can help as well. Just give me a call, and we’ll make a suitable time to meet.

What’s on at the Neighbourhood Centre?

Family History group with their newest member!

Jemma, our newest member, is just visible in her pram and is enjoying being part of the family history conversation! Our group access the records of Ancestry, My Heritage, Find My Past and Family Search as part of their weekly catch-up, and occasionally research people of interest to our district. If you are interested in learning more, they meet Tuesdays at 1pm here at the Centre.

Walking groups, the woodwork shed Tuesday mornings at 9am, Whispering Weeders garden club on the last Monday of the month, family history Tuesday afternoons at 1pm at the Centre, table tennis at the golf club (Wednesday 9am to 12pm and 7pm to 9pm), ballroom dancing Mondays at St. John’s (times can change), craft on Wednesday from 10am at the Centre, card making and scrapbooking with Rhonda on the last Monday of the month at 10am, Archery on the fourth Sunday of the month behind Deledio Reserve from 10am, and of course our wonderful Arts Hub (cnr Thompson and Alice Streets), which has a talented Mosaic group meeting on Mondays at 10am. More workshops will take place throughout the year.

Croquet (start date April 21st at 10am, behind Courthouse), machine sewing, ‘yarn/wool’ group, basket weaving, ‘Autistic Narnians’ exhibition at the Hub during the Tiny Towns Arts Trail (ANZAC weekend). Our ukulele group is on hold for now, we will revisit it after winter.

Community Bank Maldon & District There’s been a changing of the guard at Community Bank Maldon & District and we are thrilled to announce that the position of Branch Manager will now be taken up by our previous Customer Relationship Manager, Paul Simmons.

In addition to seeing Paul move up in his role, we have also seen an internal promotion for Lara Mulholland who has previously held a customer service role across our branches, but has now taken up the position of Customer Relationship Manager.

Paul (or Simmo as many people know him) has spent most of his life in the Maryborough area apart from a stint in Brisbane after he qualified as a bookbinder when he got a job with Spicer’s papers in Queensland. Paul is also an avid sports lover and as a young person played footy, cricket, basketball and golf. These days his preferred participation is in golf and he’s currently off a neat handicap of 10 so his aim is to get into the single figures.

Paul has been an existing part of the team based at the Maldon branch for the last two years and is ready for this next step. “I know we have a great team here and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead, not only for our small team, but also for the ways we can give back to our communities - after all, that’s what Community Banking is all about.”

Lara joined the team at Maldon in her role as Customer Service Officer back in 2017, after having spent two years in banking in Castlemaine as well as working in a number of local cafés during her youth. Lara is a Geelong supporter, loves walking her two dogs, Mobi & Axel, and counts Japan as one of her most amazing holiday experiences. Lara is looking forward to developing and building great relationships with the Bank’s customers in her new role.

MDFSL Chair Ross Egleton says ‘it’s really pleasing we can promote local people who live and work in the community. Lara has lived in Maldon nearly all of her life and to see her promoted to management after the years she’s been with us is just so great to see. Simmo has just moved to Castlemaine and been in various community groups his whole life so will bring such experience and knowledge as our new branch manager.’

Supporting our local youth More than 1,500 young people participated in Council-run youth programs during 2021, with participation expected to grow during 2022 with the return of in-person events and programs.

Providing opportunities for local young people is the focus of the Central Goldfields Shire Youth team – who deliver the Engage, FReeZA and L2P programs – all of which are funded by the Victorian Government.

Engage The Engage Program is targeted at young people aged 12 to 25 to build skills, leadership and connection to the community. The 2021 program included: ∑ Teenage Holiday program, 21 activities, 315 participants. ∑ Engage Youth Health and Wellbeing, 2 activities, 650+ participants. ∑ Local Mobs Engage, 1 activity, 12 participants. ∑ Engage LGBTIQA+, 4 activities, 46 participants. ∑ Qualifications for Employment, 5 activities, 30 participants.

Highlights included: ∑ ‘Chill out Space with the Anglicare KiT van ∑ Snapshot 2.0 photography competition ∑ LGBTIQA+ youth social support gatherings ∑ Life and creative skills workshops ∑ Accredited short courses (30 participants and fully subsidised) Next on the agenda for the Youth team is to work on the creation of a Youth Action Group/Youth Council, LGBTIQA+ youth support group and an event to acknowledge young people and their contribution to the community, Local young person Felix Skilling shared his experiences as a participant of the Engage! Program.

“I took the opportunity, with the help of Council, to do my food safety and handling certificate and it helped me gain employment.

“I couldn't be more grateful about the opportunity to participate in the accredited short courses that were provided to young people through the Engage! Program.

“I also participated in an opportunity to go on a trip to Melbourne where I was able to learn more about the city and the universities there and once again it helped me so much.

“I now feel a lot more comfortable knowing that I have that little bit of knowledge when it comes to Melbourne that I didn't before.”

FReeZA Targeted at young people aged between 10 and 25, the FReeZA program aims to build skills and involvement in music, arts, cultural and recreational activities.

Highlights include: Friday Sounds Like online performances - over 10,000 view online ∑ Halloween Party ∑ Movie launch ∑ Pool vouchers ∑ Pool parties The Youth team are now working on the creation of a pop-up Youth Hub, bus tours, Skate Park visit and creating opportunities for online and in-person concerts and theatre activities.

TAC L2P program The TAC L2P program provides driving assistance to young people across the Shire. The program supports learner drivers aged 16 to 21 who have no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

During 2021, 12 learner drivers achieved their P plates, approximately 470 driving hours were logged, and 6 volunteer driver mentors helped deliver the program.

Central Goldfields Shire Maryborough Ward Councillor Wayne Sproull said the fantastic work of the Youth team was having a real impact on local young people.

“I am often asked what we are doing to support local young people and what interesting and engaging activities are available to them.

“The enthusiasm and excitement of our two youth officers, along with fantastic participation numbers from events held during 2021, speaks wonders for the programs that are being offered here in the Central Goldfields.

“I’d expect that participation and engagement will only grow this year as events and activities return to being in person.

“If you know of a young person, or you are a parent or carer of a young person, I encourage you to follow the Central Goldfields Youth Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s happening and upcoming events.”

Fire Danger Period ends in Central Goldfields

The Fire Danger Period (FDP) has officially ended in the Central Goldfields Shire. CFA District 2 Assistant Chief Fire Officer Steve Alcock said that while the FDP has come to an end in some areas, it is still important to remain vigilant.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas,” he said.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

It is important residents check local conditions are safe for any burn-off they were considering undertaking. “You must register your burnoffs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” ACFO Alcock said. “Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be crosschecked with the burn-off register, which will then prevent volunteer firefighters being taken away from workplaces, families and potentially genuine emergencies.”

Loddon Mayoral Column Fire Danger Period lifted

The Fire Danger Period for Loddon Shire was lifted as of 1am Monday 28th March 2022. The CFA is reminding community members that while the Fire Danger Period has ended, it is still important that residents check that local conditions are safe for any burn-off you’re considering undertaking.

You must register your burn-offs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations.

Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be cross-checked with the burn-off register, which will then prevent volunteer firefighters being taken away from workplaces, families and potentially genuine emergencies. Landowners can now register their burn-off online at: www.firepermits.vic.gov.au.

Eddington Car Sprints The 37th annual car sprints event was held last weekend. The event is a traditional quarter mile single car sprint run down Playfair Street in Eddington.

Over 90 entries competed individually against the clock to set the fastest time they can, making individual runs down 400 meters of closed road.

Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program The State Government’s Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program opens today, 29 March. Claims for the Dining Program opened at 10am, while claims for the Entertainment Program open at 3pm.

The Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program encourages people to get out and enjoy the world-class dining and entertainment experiences Victoria has to offer.

Another great weekend of events The weekend saw another fantastic round of events in Loddon Shire, with Mother Nature treating us to beautiful weather once again.

I was fortunate to attend the Eddington Vintage Sports Car Club Sprints on Saturday (26th March). It was a great day with a fantastic crowd, and I’d like to thank the organising committee and volunteers for putting on such a great event, as well as catering.

There was a large variety of old classic cars from across the world — including some very old vehicles. The event also featured historic motorbikes, which also ran on the day.

A Bella in Bealiba A few weeks ago on a sunny Thursday, I thought I would take a trip to explore Bealiba. Being new to the Goldfields area, I’m learning about Maryborough Coles and Lyall Earls (my partner loves this shop!) but wanted to learn a little more about the small towns around the area.

I started with a walk along the main street to check out the old buildings and learn a little bit about the history of the place during the gold rush. I stopped into the post office/general store and picked myself up a refreshing drink and a lovely ‘Mr Happy’ Mr Men cup; which will be a great addition to our mug collection at the farm.

It was just after heavy rains, so I wandered down to the swollen creek to find a chorus of frogs welcoming me.

Next I had a swing at the local park near the school — I believe you are never too old to play! I drove out of town to Bealiba Reservoir and got quite excited about planning a future camping trip or picnic at one of the shaded camping spots. There is a nice length walk that you can take around the perimeter.

After a refreshing wade in the reservoir, I drove back to town and checked out the beautiful gardens of the railway station.

All in all, a nice trip —I recommend it to anyone that hasn’t visited Bealiba. They also have a community day coming up on the 9th April from 12 to 2pm, so mark it in the calendar!

Urban Echidna Part 2

When I was a teenager, I was out one day with friends on horseback, on the back roads around Broadford, when we came across an echidna. Having never seen one before, I quickly dismounted beside it to get a closer look.

Once it became aware of me, it disappeared under the soil, in what looked like three or four shrugs of its spines.

It was amazing to see it vanish so quickly.

Over twenty years later, I saw my second one. In Dunolly. It was a lovely summer evening and we were sitting outside, quietly chatting, when our little dog began to yap at something. That was quite out of character for the little fella, so fearing a snake, I went to investigate.

And there it was, a small echidna, calmly ignoring the aggravating dog. It was investigating every nook and cranny of our veranda, checking behind tools, boxes and cans as well as the wheelbarrow. Once the dog was inside, the echidna kept on with its purposeful exploration. Every ten minutes or so I went back to check on its progress and it had moved on a few metres. It took nearly an hour for it to circumnavigate the house. During that time it had me spellbound. To get out of the yard it had to climb the steps up the garden path. I was sure it would be too small to scale them, but up it went, no trouble at all. It crossed behind our neighbour's place and walked along a deep cleft in the concrete where the sliding garage door went when it was open. That evening the door was shut and the cleft in the concrete was about two metres long, at least thirty centimetres deep and about twenty centimetres wide. The perfect size for a little echidna. Fascinated to see what it would do when it reached the dead end, I stood looking for something to fish it out with. I need not have worried because when it reached the end it climbed to its full height and kind of spun sideways and fell at the same time. Within seconds it was on its feet and waddling back up the cleft. Once it got to the end it headed across the road into the bush. To my knowledge it never visited again, but it left some wonderful memories for me to unpack and revisit from time to time.

News of our Railway Hotel changing hands set me thinking about all the changes I have seen over the last thirty-five years. The hotel was built in 1861, in the gold rush days and was first named the Criterion, to later become the Railway. In that busy time, there was a number of hotels in the town, probably one on every corner. There were rumours of ghostly hauntings in the Railway over the years. Quite a few of the early hotels were destroyed in the bush fires and then, as the gold diggings were abandoned, over the years Dunolly finished up with only two pubs, the Royal and the Railway. As we all know, there is now only the Railway.

Rachel’s Buckley House was the Junction Hotel and on the Avoca road is the old Terminus hotel, now a private residence. When Mike and I came to Dunolly in 1987 and bought the licensed grocer, the Railway hotel had been purchased only two months beforehand by David and Pat Chapple. As a result, we became firm friends, as we still are; although they headed off for a trip around Australia after selling the pub but returned to settle back in Dunolly. After that, David worked behind the bar for two successive publicans. The Chapples decided to restore the pub to its former glory so, in conjunction with an interior decorator; Pat scraped off old wallpaper to discover the original patterned dado round the walls and had it copied and replaced. Pat is a talented artist and was able to display some of her paintings on the walls.

They renovated the upstairs rooms, and, in those days, there was accommodation available. Pat and David set up a lovely private flat upstairs for themselves, but discovered they were hardly ever there, because back then people stayed longer after dinner and often had impromptu songs with Waistcoat Willy on guitar. Sunday nights were the only publicans’ free night as on that day, they closed early. We used to barbecue chickens in our shop, so would keep one aside on Sunday and Pat and David would bring a bottle of wine and that would be their night off.

Publicans came and went over the years; one couple just tootled off without a word; one couple closed down the TAB, so most of the blokes all departed to the Royal in protest, but it all worked out in the end. So, hooray for the good old Dunolly Railway Hotel.

Check your smoke alarms before Daylight saving ends Firefighters are asking Victorians to check their smoke alarms are in working order before embarking on their Easter getaways this weekend.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) say the best time to do this is before daylight saving ends this Easter Sunday.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said it was vital for families to conduct this life-saving check because only working smoke alarms save lives.

“Normally we’d ask people to check their smoke alarm when they change their clock at the end of daylight savings, but this year we’re urging Victorians to take action before they hit the road this Easter long weekend,” he said.

“Most fatal fires in the last 10 years have started in either someone’s lounge room or bedroom. We know that many fatal fires start at night and the smell of smoke won’t wake you up. We recommend that smoke alarms are powered by a 10-year lithium battery and are interconnected – so that when one of your smoke alarms activate, the others will too.

“We’re encouraging Victorians to keep themselves safe from fire as we move into cooler weather, especially when heaters and electric blankets bring an elevated risk of house fires, Chief Officer Heffernan said.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Block said it was equally important to test smoke alarms and clean them regularly.

“It’s no good having a smoke alarm installed if it isn’t working – a smoke alarm that is properly maintained can save your life if there is a fire,” he said.

“If you’re staying home this weekend, it will only take a few minutes to clean and then test your smoke alarm by pushing the test button. And if you’re travelling, make sure you do it before you leave. “It’s a small step you can take to ensure your smoke alarms will work when you need it most. “Regardless of the type of smoke alarm you have, all smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years,” Commissioner Block said.

When checking, installing or replacing your smoke alarms, FRV and CFA recommend: ∑ Smoke alarms should be installed in every living area and bedroom. ∑ Smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when any alarm activates, all smoke alarms will sound.

Test your smoke alarm batteries every month by pressing and holding the test button until the smoke alarm beeps three times. ∑ Clean your smoke alarms every year by dusting, vacuuming or gently wiping around the cover to clean it so it will sound if there is smoke. ∑ If you have 9-volt batteries in smoke alarms, the batteries must be replaced every year. ∑ All smoke alarm units (including those attached to mains power) should be replaced every 10 years, and it is best to replace with hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms. Otherwise, replace your smoke alarms with a unit that has a tamper-proof chamber and 10year lithium battery.

Central Goldfields Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc. Looking at the agenda for the March 29 Central Goldfields Shire Ordinary Council meeting, it was very pleasing to see:8.1 Carisbrook Flood Levee Construction Contract No. G1592-2022.

8.8 Maryborough Aerodrome Taskforce, amongst several other issues.

The Carisbrook levee, as much as this present design is believed to assist some of the community, there remain many question marks over the present design. It is believed this present design will give some protection to some of the houses, but it is also believed to disadvantage several other areas. Great to see action, even though it is not the design many residents wish for, it appears to be the design they are going to get.

The Airport Task Force report. This is quite a long and in places, a very thorough report, but does it go far enough to give the council the information it will need to get this issue moving? Well done to the participants for their time and effort — a lot has gone into this. However, the present issues, which have not been resolved since the deregistration, still remain.

The lease agreements still need to be finalised, a Master Plan needs to be in place, planning issues and the water and erosion issues still need to be addressed. The idea of an Aircraft Landing Area with Instrument landing is a very impressive idea, however the initial issues, we believe, still need to be addressed. We ask Council to sort out the issues at hand so the Airport can move ahead as a united body and work together.

What has the Council done to actually instil confidence in their direction to encourage new development and enterprises with this area? Two years ago, the big drive was to put up that kangaroo fence. Now in this Task Force report, one issue is “a significant kangaroo population inside the aerodrome fence that presents a safety hazard”. Once again, we ask what research was done before placing this fence there?

It appears a larger issue has been created just from one decision. We need to make sure every step is a winner, Since December 2021, CGR&RAI has been monitoring the Council's “planning vacancy” situation and published advertisements. We use the Council's own vacancy listings for our data. The Council has been stating that surveyor and planning staff shortages are an issue across the State and they are doing the best they can.

We have compared our Shire's advertised planning positions with similar Councils — Mount Alexander, Ararat, Golden Plains, Loddon, Campaspe and Pyrenees Shires.

Over the past three months, only one Shire has advertised for surveyors — Loddon Shire 1 x weekly.

No other Shire advertised for surveyors over our threemonth period of research. This raises a question? Where else does our Shire advertise vacancy positions?

Our figures did not incorporate the Governance officer,

which is presently advertised, nor the recently-vacated position of General Manager Infrastructure Assets and Planning. The average planning positions advertised over the past three months are:Central Goldfields Shire planning positions x 3.75 per week, average of all the other shires per week is x 0.75 per week.

Loddon did advertise two planning positions over several weeks, most other shires had very few advertised.

We would welcome the Council replying to this, as we do not have all the data to which they have access.

It appears all shires are doing it hard, but our shire still seems to be doing HARD better than most.

Could this be a management issue or just hard luck?

We would welcome a change in these rather disturbing situations.

Dunolly Railway Hotel Pool Club

The A grade team played at our home against The Old Boys from Maryborough. After the first round of singles, we were up 3 frames to 2 but then the Old Boys hit their straps. We lost the night 4 frames to 7, all the games were very close except for the game yours truly potted the black ball out of turn.

The Dunolly Railway Hotel B grade had the night off because of covid related issues. Bealiba Hall Indoor Bowls Report Some excellent bowling this week from all bowlers. Games were close & several were decided on the last end. Only one team however had three wins, congratulations to Gordon Smith and Tiger Coburn. Shirley Coburn & Ian Lovel were a very close second with two wins.

With everyone bowling so well, the votes for the ‘Sam Whitehead Memorial Trophy’ are proving very difficult.

Dunolly Bowling Club Saturday 26th March: Congratulations and celebrations to our Division 2 Bowlers, Dunolly Gold. Our bowlers travelled down to Newstead to play Carisbrook in the grand final, a picture-perfect day for bowling, clear blue skies, with little or no wind. The teams were: Peter Freemantle (S), Andrew Mebbrey (3rd), Emmitt Smith (2nd), Keith McKenzie (L). Score was Dunolly 25 Carisbrook 20.

Roy Pickering (S), Don Mortlock (3rd), Ian Flett (2nd), Wayne Stephens (L). Score was Dunolly 27 - Carisbrook 11.

Barry Mortlock (S), Frank Mifsud (3rd), Paul Chase (2nd), Mathew Potter (L). Score was Dunolly 20 - Carisbrook 28.The emergency bowler was Keith Elliott. Final score was Dunolly Gold 72 defeated Carisbrook 59.

It was encouraging to see Dunolly non-playing bowlers, family and friends supporting the bowlers on to a victory.

Sunday 27th March: Another perfect day, the club opened its doors to all, for a music afternoon. Jacqui greeted all at the door kindly accepting the gold coin donations. Don and Raeleen were kept busy serving adult refreshments, Terry Long was selling raffle tickets, there were two lucky winners.

We even had a surprise birthday; one of our bowlers celebrated a milestone birthday, his beautiful wife surprised him with a birthday cake, which was enjoyed by all. To top the day off, John on the guitar and Tracie with her beautiful voice entertained us for most of the afternoon. This day would not have been the success that it was without the help of the volunteers, also a huge thank you to Jan Stephenson; Jan organised this day for the club, seeing to the lighting effects and sounds. To all the guests who came, thank you, it was our first music afternoon and l am sure there will be a few more in the near future.

Up Coming Events for April Saturday 2nd April: Come along to the club, starting at 1.30pm, for a friendly game of bowls. No need to write names down; it will also be an opportunity to complete some of the in-house bowling competition, followed by an Aussie BBQ, sausage and onion in bread, minus the flies. A gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Sunday 3rd April: Dunolly’s Medley Day has been cancelled. Please see Chris, Alan or Terry for further information.

Monday 4th April: Monthly committee meeting, 7.30pm sharp. If late, it will be your shout at the bar after the meeting.

Tuesday 7th April: Dunolly Bowling Club Ladies Section Invitation Day. Please contact Jill Morse either via email or phone no later than 4th April if intending to play. This event is proudly sponsored by Russell and Jacqui Prior.

Tuesday 12th April: Veterans Day at Maryborough Golf.

Wednesday 20th April: Dunolly will be hosting their last Monthly triples for this season. If you haven’t already put your name down, ring Barry Cann for Dunolly’s last hosting. As it is the Wednesday after Easter, maybe the Easter Bunny has left a surprise or two, no it is not poop droppings.

Bowlers, as previously mentioned, you would have all seen the flyers many clubs send to us, regarding tournaments they are having; these tournaments are held to raise money that most clubs depend upon financially, our club is no exception.

Please make an effort to go to one or two if possible.

Dunolly Football Netball Club A big congratulations to Laane Dunolly cricket club A grade team on their grand final win on the weekend.

Last weekend saw the final practice match for our senior footballers before Round 1.

One of our co coaches Bailey Goodwin has written a fantastic report on this for me as I sadly missed it this week. Please have a read lots of positive stuff in there.

This week around the club it is handover week! This means we have our Thursday nights kicking off. Come along, watch training, grab a drink and a bite to eat and hang around with the players and other supporters!

Hopefully the footy will be on in the background too.

We have Lasagne for the seniors on the menu and our juniors are getting a choice of some fried options this week with dim sims, potato cakes and chips on the menu.

We have our first function of the season. Come along to the clubrooms on Saturday 12pm to 6pm have a few laughs. Tickets will be available Thursday night at training or by talking to one of our committee members.

Tickets are $25 each and you get 1 entry in the draw, a lovely BBQ lunch and selected drinks for free from 1pm to 3pm. (this is in line with liquor licence rules) It is also meet the senior coaches, so come and put faces to names and meet Bailey, Rhys, Bob and Nadine.

Bring your coins for some games. There will also be a small amount of merch available to buy as well.

And our social memberships will be available too. $50 for all 8 home games. See one of our friendly committee members to get yours. Countdown is on with only 4 weeks till round 1. Keep your eye out for our fixture in the coming weeks. See you Saturday.

Final Practice Match After being told early in the week we would be playing in 23 degree weather, mother nature took a slight turn, bumping the temperature up to 30 degrees with no wind…boy it was a warm one.

The game against Longwood started off fairly scrappy with both teams struggling to score in the first 5-minutes of the game; but once we hit the scoreboard, we continued to apply scoring pressure kicking 8 straight goals in the first quarter (3 apiece for the two youngest Goodwin brothers). As the game went on, we continued to run away with the game, outscoring the Redlegs in every quarter. Mitchell and Jackson Goodwin both finished with 5 goals, as did Jayden Beqir after going through the middle and swinging forward as opposed to down back. Adal Zuk was superb all day with his run and carry off half back, while our young ruck duo of Max Ryan and Oscar Keogh continued to impress.

Comfortable winners in the end, roughly 120 points.

Laane Dunolly A Grade Premiers The Laanecoorie — Dunolly Cricket Club completed a fantastic season to win their third successive Maryborough and District Cricket Association A Grade flag last Saturday at Hedges Oval in Maryborough.

Our captain Matthew Smith sent Clunes in to bat after winning the toss on a perfect day weather wise. We gained an early breakthrough to put Clunes on the back foot after opening bowler Chris Lee got us off to a good start with the first wicket in the 3rd over of the innings. Daniel Romeo chipped in with a second wicket in the 11th over as Clunes slumped to 2/16. Clunes consolidated after this however and at the 20 over drinks break were 2/40 as both sides battled for the upper hand in a very even contest.

The match completely changed complexion after the drinks break however as off spinner Ben Gunn made the initial breakthrough after drinks and Liam Hurse broke through twice in the 25th over to suddenly have Clunes 5/54.

Our bowlers really got on top after this with youngster Joe Lovel introduced into the attack. Joe picked up 2 wickets to go with his 2 in the semi final in a very impressive display of swing bowling for a 15 year old at senior level. Lee added another 2 wickets to his tally and Zac Graham picked up the last Clunes scalp as they incredibly lost 8/29 after the drinks break to be all out for 69 in 34.2 overs. Catches were taken by Daniel Romeo, Zac Graham, keeper James Shorney, Matthew Smith & Mitchell Blackman.

Chasing 70 to win, our batsmen were well up to the task chasing down the target in 11.4 overs to win the match by nine wickets. Tyler Hinds 18 was the only batsmen to be dismissed as Daniel Romeo 22 not out & Mitch Blackman 23 not out finished the job in aggressive fashion, completing a hat trick of premiership victories at A Grade level.

It was another great season for the club and President Ralph Williams mentioned there were several volunteers worth recognition for their efforts. Club curator Peter Beazley did a fantastic job with the turf wicket at True Blue Floors Oval putting in many hours to produce a top

Chris Lee man of the match class playing surface. Kaye Polinelli did a great job as scorer as per usual, for both Under 16’s and A grade. Our junior coaches Jamie Polinelli (Under 16) and Callum Liddicoat (Under 13) were both generous with giving their time to the youngsters, teaching them the skills of the game and both did a terrific job.

Our senior captains Matthew Smith (A grade) & Nathan Leist (A Reserve) both showed great leadership and organisational skills and we appreciate their efforts & guidance. Ralph also made mention of the support of the club sponsors. Without this support the club would not be in the position it is in today and they deserve our gratitude. The club’s senior presentation night will be held on Saturday night 2nd April 7pm at the Maryborough Golf Club. Meals from the main menu and drinks at bar prices.
