New Shingles Vaccine A new shingles vaccine has recently been added to the Na onal Immunisa on Program What is Shingles? Shingles is a painful blistering rash caused by reac va on of the same virus that causes chickenpox. While most symptoms last up to 3 weeks, shingles can be serious. It can lead to long-term nerve pain that can last for months (post-herpe c neuralgia) and other serious complica ons, including pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness and swelling of the brain. About 1 in 3 people will get shingles in their life me. Shingles usually affects older people, and the risk of complica ons increases with age, par cularly for those over the age of 70. People who are immunocompromised are at higher risk of shingles and severe complica ons. Vaccina on is a safe and effec ve way to protect you from serious disease caused by shingles.
What has changed? From 1 November 2023, the shingles vaccine Shingrix® will replace Zostavax® on the Na onal Immunisa on Program (NIP)for eligible people most at risk of complica ons from shingles. The NIP funded 2-dose course of Shingrix® will be available for - people aged 70 years (only); First Na ons people aged 50 years or older; immunocompromised people aged 18 years or older with certain medical risk condi ons. The Shingrix® vaccine has shown to be safe and effec ve at preven ng shingles and severe disease from complica ons. Although the Shingrix® vaccine may be free, there may be a consulta on fee or administra on cost to have the vaccine. The Zostavax® shingles vaccine and catch-up program for people aged 71-79 years will end on 31 October 2023. There will be no catch-up program on the NIP from 1 November 2023. COST A BARRIER TO HEALTHCARE FOR OLDER AUSTRALIANS New research from Na onal Seniors Australia suggests 68% of older people have recently gone without or hesitated to access essen al healthcare because of cost. The report is based on a survey of nearly 6000 people aged 50 and older. The survey found only 32% of respondents said cost had not affected their access to health care. Chief Advocate Mr Ian Henschke said, unsurprisingly, older people with limited wealth have greater barriers to accessing health care. For those who missed out because of cost, almost a third said it had nega vely affected their health or wellbeing. “Most Australians expect to receive lifelong universal healthcare, but it is clearly not the case,” he said. The survey showed differences in the propor on of older people experiencing cost related barriers according to the type of health care being accessed. Mental health care, dental treatment and dental checkups were the most likely to be forgone, with 20%-26% of respondents unable to afford them on one or more occasion. Prescrip on medica on and GP appointments were the least likely to be skipped because of cost, but even they were unaffordable for 5%-7% of older people. On top of these numbers, for every form of healthcare the survey enquired about, another 21%-33% of people hesitated over the cost. Na onal Seniors Australia survey respondents reported various health and wellbeing consequences

The situa on is similar among the 832 respondents who had been on an elec ve surgery public wai ng list, 46% of whom could not afford to pay privately to speed things up. Dear Editor, Well done Vicky Fizzell! Your comments on the behaviour of the raven towards your dog were very descrip ve. On checking up to make sure the following informa on is correct; we see that ravens are very intelligent birds. Ravens belong to a class of other intelligent birds but are more sedentary and territorial. Mr. Dog-Hounding Mr. Raven may have lost his mate. Ravens mate for life. Perhaps Mr. Raven’s mate may have been taken by a dog similar in appearance to your pet. Although this may appear somewhat fanciful, ravens have episodic memory like us. They can recall, place, and even dis nguish between different humans. This skill is also shown in our magpies which swoop at strangers, whilst protec ng their nest, but do not swoop at the humans who have befriended them. Ravens chase, divebomb and cry out to protect their nests. They gesture; that is, they hold an object in their beak to show another bird, par cularly when ma ng. On the other hand, Mr. Raven may feel threatened by other animals in the area that he regards as his own stamping ground. Look out for your chooks and collect eggs as soon as possible as ravens eat from a very wide range of foods. Big, loud, black Ravens made a marvellous topic coming up to Halloween. he Prospectors and Miners Assoc. of Victoria (PMAV) returned to hold their Annual General Mee ng at our magnificent Dunolly Town Hall on Saturday 21st Oct 2023. A great turnout of 200 PMAV members a ended with a great line-up of speakers including: Neville Perry and Brent Shannon both local miners/prospectors & reality TV stars from Aussie Gold Hunters; Mick Spiteri – local business owner who repairs and modifies GPX machines for the prospec ng community; Ian Holland miner/ prospector – reality TV star from Adventure Gold Diggers; John Harris – Geologist who spoke about tectonic plates and Victorian gold and Doug Stone – Author/cartographer on the importance of keeping public land open. Most members then stayed on for the Dunolly Gold Rush Fes val on the following Sunday, contribu ng considerable economic benefit to the town as well as manning the
nother historical fact is that the original creators of the Dunolly Gold Rush Fes val were also part of the main commi ee of the PMAV! Created in the 1980’s, the PMAV have represented prospectors and small scale miners for over 40 years. They are major sponsors of every event rela ng to prospec ng in the Central Victoria region: Laanecoorie Gold bash (Fundraiser for Peter Mac cancer charity); Wedderburn Jamboree, Australian Gold Panning Championships (Blackwood); Australian Gold Prospectors Expo (Bendigo), Ararat Gold Fes val etc. With 8 branches, the PMAV con nually hold field trips in and around Dunolly. Mayor, Cr. Grace La Vella Last week’s Council Mee ng included eight Officer reports and one urgent business item for endorsement. The majority were procedural rela ng to policy reviews, Governance Rules review and the Annual Ac on Plan for 2023-24. A highlight was the endorsement of the Maryborough Town Hall Electrical & AV upgrade contract which following an extensive tender and evalua on process was awarded to EPM&C Pty Ltd for the sum of $539,639. The works will commence by the end of the year and once complete, the works will mean that the Town Hall can re-open to community use. Our vision is that the Town Hall becomes a mul func onal entertainment nerve-centre for our community and future genera ons to enjoy and to further enhance tourism in Central Goldfields Shire. We will con nue to seek further funding opportuni es to restore the Town Hall to its former glory to bring backstage performances, exhibi ons, debutante balls, fashion shows, dances and more. Speaking of tourism, we are seeing a fantas c response from a growing number of visitors to key Central Goldfields a rac ons including the Art Gallery and Maryborough Sta on, which are now regional drawcards. We also have Energy Breakthrough coming up soon which is always a huge event for our Shire and, there is a strong appe te in Central Goldfields to further build on investment in these and other a rac ons led by our local operators. I’m heartened by many other ideas I’m hearing such as enhanced signage in key loca ons and opportuni es to build industry connec ons through professional bodies such as with a tourism accord. In late November, we’ll host a workshop with Bendigo Regional Tourism to bring together tourism and hospitality operators to share ideas and work together to define priori es for tourism in the Shire. Operators will receive an invite shortly.
FIRE SEASON PREPARATION FREE GREEN WASTE DISPOSAL Central Goldfields Shire residents are being urged to prepare for a poten ally dangerous fire season by reducing fuel loads on their property now. To assist the community, Council is offering free green waste drop off at the Carisbrook, Talbot and Dunolly transfer sta ons from Saturday 4 to Tuesday 14 November 2023. SKILLED FORCE Work is con nuing to determine how we can establish a Learning Hub in the Central Goldfields. This week representa ves from Council, Latrobe University, Country Universi es Centre and local businesses joined together to discuss next steps. A Learning Hub would support local people in iden fying post-secondary educa on and training op ons. It would also help create closer rela onships between educa on and business to shape a skilled future workforce for our Shire. The vision for the Learning Hub also features: study spaces, compu ng facili es, high-speed internet administra on and academic skills support services like developing wri ng and research skills, student services including study and pastoral support, advice to access ter ary educa on student services. The group is now considering an applica on for funding to establish a Learning Hub through the Federal Government’s Regional University Study Hubs Program. ENDING SOON: Our Immunisa on Team have been running free immunisa on sessions in Dunolly since July. The last one for the year is 22nd November . CWA BEALIBA UPDATE This month has seen Stuart Mill (one of the branches in the East Wimmera Group) celebrate its 90th anniversary – a wonderful achievement. Nine of our members a ended the celebra ons and from all reports it was a lovely a ernoon topped off by a sumptuous a ernoon tea. Also, this month the branch held its AGM. It was a busy me for Pam Brightwell who, in her dual role as Branch Secretary and Group President, had to deliver several reports whilst Sharon Douglas, the previous Group President, conducted the elec on of office bearers for Pam. Prior to the AGM members enjoyed a shared lunch. With so many events taking place during the fes ve season it was decided to move the branch Xmas lunch to December 14th. BUSHFIRE RESILIENCE RATING APP
In a world-first, Australians now have access to a free app to be er prepare their home from bushfire risk and help put downward pressure on insurance premiums. The app enables Australians to assess their site-specific risk and take ac on to improve their bushfire resilience. The Australian Government contributed $3 million to support the groundbreaking work of the Resilient Building Council (RBC) who launched their free Bushfire Resilience Ra ng app today. Households can now measure the bushfire resilience of their own home through a star-ra ng system and receive a customised ac on plan to make prac cal, evidence-based bushfire safety improvements to their homes. As tasks are completed, their home becomes safer and the home’s Resilience Ra ng is updated through the app. The RBC received funding from the Australian Government’s Disaster Risk Reduc on Package, to develop the app. Over 1,200 households from bushfire impacted areas helped co-design and trial the app, undertaking ac ons that resulted in an average 67% reduc on in the likelihood of their home igni ng in a bushfire. The Bushfire Resilience Ra ng is calculated using the
Bushfire House Loss Probability Model, bushfire informa on, and historical house loss data. This is the first scien fic model to calculate bushfire building performance. RBC’s Resilience Ra ngs were developed to improve the resilience and preparedness of households who have iden fied bushfire risk and plan ways to mi gate the risk. The app was trialled in several different fire-prone loca ons across the country including in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. It was developed in response to a key recommenda on of the Royal Commission into Na onal Natural Disaster Arrangements. The next phase of RBC’s Resilience Ra ngs program will be launched by mid-2024, providing expert on-site assessments for integrated bushfire, flood, storm, cyclone, heatwave, and energy efficiency ra ngs. On-site assessors will be able to provide a detailed assessment of a home and verify Resilience Ra ngs to support industry ini a ves, grants programs or adver sing Resilience Ra ngs when selling or leasing a property. Another item of clothing, which is important to the Op Shop is the School Uniform. Currently, we don’t have sufficient supplies to meet the requests. Please, review your wardrobes for unwanted, out-sized, expensive garments, as we would appreciate your dona ons of the same. Children grow out of their clothing at a remarkable rate, so school uniforms and Op Shops should be a happy couple. If your interest is in older books, we have received a wonderful selec on of vintage books from the 1950’s. Our ever-growing selec on of books makes the first ves bule on the right, as you enter the Op Shop look like a very, very overcrowded library! I drove up to have a s cky-beak at what all the big machines were doing beside the railway line near the sta on. Looks like a building site - is Dunolly ge ng a suburb? I am fascinated with the ad on TV for a re rement village for the over fi ies that claims to be filled with ‘rare finds’. Do they have a museum in there, or are the residents an endangered species? Would love to know what these rare finds are. I am surprised at mes how flexible cats are and some of the posi ons they get into—and out of! My cat CK was asleep on my lap the other night, on her back, head downhill with both front legs at full stretch up in the air. She slept like this for ages, then flipped over onto her front again. Got a bit of a surprise this morning when I stepped onto the scales to get my monthly reminder to cut back on bikkies and icecream (as if). The weight was 184.56 kilos!!!

RECORD BREAKING PROFIT FOR RHEOLA CHARITY CARNIVAL The Rheola Charity Carnival Commi ee has announced a record profit of $60,000 for the 150th anniversary event at the final mee ng prior to the AGM held on 15th October 2023. Outgoing President Peter Mason was delighted with the result saying "The 150th Charity Carnival was a wonderful event made possible by our dedicated army of volunteers”. The 150th celebra ons were delayed three years due to CoVid and to finally run the event was a great shot in the arm for the community. The $60,000 will be divided between the Inglewood and Dunolly Hospitals ($20,000 each) and the Rheola Hall and Rheola Recrea on Reserve ($10,000 each). Peter Mason is the fi h genera on of the O'Brien / Mason family to be involved in running the event. There were almost 80 family members involved on the day with family travelling from interstate to a end and work at the carnival. Ca o also talked about the future saying "Rheola as everyone knows is a ny place that really goes above and beyond for that day. It's ge ng harder to get volunteers. I think we need to engage more local community groups to be involved in the day ". The next RCC commi ee mee ng will take place on Sun 12th November 2023 at 1pm at the Rheola Hall, all are welcome.

We had a few absentees this week, so numbers were down a li le. That didn’t stop the fun that was had as a team of four took on a team of three. Top quality bowling in the first game saw the team of Malcolm Campbell, Gary McClelland, Tiger Coburn & Chris Evans easily score the win in the first game. Even though they bowled well in the next two games they were no match for the team of Lyle Streeter, Shirley Coburn & Heather Cooper who won the night with two wins to one. Heather Cooper played the shot of the night, one that would be worthy of a trophy for best trick shot. Happy Bowling Chris Evans

One team from Dunolly Gold played with three bowlers, Charlie Spiteri, Don Mortlock and Fabion Delconte, each bowler gave their upmost. Tuesday 31/10 Mid-week: Dunolly Blue vs Maryborough Golf at Golf. Dunolly Blue vs Carisbrook at Carisbrook. Results will be in next week’s Welcome Record. Unfortunately, l don’t have the score from Dunolly Gold who played Newstead at Newstead. Newstead was victorious on the day. Division 2: Dunolly Green vs Maryborough Golf at Dunolly. A. Bri on defeated T. Young 18-12; K. Waters was defeated by R. Andrews 12-28; D. Price was defeated by S. Sco 12-24. Dunolly Green 42, Golf 64. Dunolly Green, due to unavailability of some bowlers, our four young bowlers were asked to step up. Keisha and Jordan played as seconds, Corey and Ellio were Leaders. Record at True Blue Floors Oval It brings us great excitement to announce the opening partnership between Luke Smith and Tom Hanne on the weekend is now a club record. A massive win against Carisbrook was set up by our two openers Tom Hanne and Luke Smith who carried their bat not-out in the first innings. The bowlers then closed out the job to make 5-0 on the season. The record was previously 167, held by Shane Pollinelli and Colin McKenzie in the 2008/2009 season. Congratula ons to Tom and Luke and we hope to see many more amazing opening partnerships! Special men on also goes to Thang Nguyen who took his first A grade wicket which was followed by an even be er celebra on! Sam Bartle led from the front with his 2 wickets of his 4 overs while Jarryd Russell also chimed in with two wickets. You will receive a glass of champagne or so drink upon arrival. Finger food, Cheese/Fruit pla ers and sweets will be served throughout the a ernoon. One of our friendly bar staff will see to your refreshments. Our in-house bookie will be running sweeps. Enjoy a game or two of barefoot bowling.
