Ransomware can cause you a lot of headaches and heartaches if your computer is infected.

Primarily ransomware infections come from fake emails that claim to be from AGL, Australia Post, Origin, the ATO, Ebay, Paypal and many more. If you see an email from any of the above DO NOT OPEN IT – just delete the email.

The first check.

Fake emails will often have the sender as (Example) AGL Energy <admin @ volcalsmut.com> The second part of the sender address is known as ‘on behalf of’. It is the actual sender address. Always check this.

If in doubt, delete.

You can check if the email is fake by looking at the link embedded in the email. If you hover your mouse over the link you will see that the link does not go to the actual website eg: I received an email from “AGL” this week to advise me of my latest bill with a link “View you paperless Bill” this link when I hover over it does

not relate to AGL in any way, shape or form, the link has langaragolfclub.org with other letters and numbers at the end of it – this shows that the email is not from AGL. If you are unsure of any emails with a link in them just DELETE the email.

Health savings: Sport and Exercise costs less than injuries Australians saved the health system more than $320 million in a single year by participating in sport and other forms of physical activity, according to a report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The report, Economics of sport and physical activity participation and injury, shows that while there are costs to the health system from treating sport and other exercise-related injuries, this is outweighed by savings from benefits such as lower blood pressure, stronger bones, and improved mental health.

‘Physical activity has physical and psychological benefits for individuals which can in turn benefit the health system by reducing the need for people to receive treatment for illness and injuries,’ said AIHW spokesperson Dr. Heather Swanston (PhD).

‘We estimate that physical inactivity accounted for around $2.4 billion in health spending in 2018-19.

‘The cost to the health system would have been $1.7 billion higher without the health benefits from current levels of physical activity, including sport, undertaken in Australia.

‘Around $1.2 billion was spent on injuries incurred while undertaking physical activity and $149 million was spent on osteoarthritis due to

previous injury from physical activity.

‘Overall, sport and physical activity provided a net saving of $321 million to the Australian health system.’

More spending could have been avoided through improved injury prevention and management in sport and other forms of physical activity.

From directly associated conditions, physical activity prevented the most spending on falls ($488 million), depression ($392 million) and anxiety ($173 million).

The research for this report used data from the Australian Bureau of Disease Study 2018 and Disease expenditure in Australia 2018-19 because they contained the most recent estimates of both disease burden due to risk factors and disease spending.

Goldfields Music Club –Feature Friday 27 October 2023 & Vibes on Broadway! 2023 What a huge weekend it was in Dunolly last weekend. It was great to see so many people around the place getting out and enjoying life!

The Goldfields Music Club had the pleasure of presenting Vibes on Broadway! 2023 with five bands presenting a variety of music in the street on Broadway. The Dunolly Country Market was buzzing around us and whilst the absence of cars was a bit weird at first, dancing in the street did happen. With the Goldrush Festival in the Gardens the love was certainly spread around the town.

Our Lucky draw was one by Helen M from Kangaroo Flat with Cameron P, Geoffrey R and Amy T getting the minor prizes. Thanks to all who joined in with our fundraiser.

Thank you also to all our supporters, volunteers and donors. Also, the Central Goldfields Shire Council, Vic Roads and GAME Traffic for assistance to close Broadway for the day. Especially thank you to everyone who came out to the Events!

AND don’t forget we have Feature Friday on this week at the Dunolly Golf Club – come and join us to see the Midnight Blue Blues Band – dancin’ & foot tappin’ a plenty coming up. (No Country Roak this time sorry – next year!!)

Sunday, November 26th 2023 Handel’s Messiah Inglewood Town Hall The Dunolly Gilbert & Sullivan Society is delighted to announce that we are partnering with the Community Bank Maldon & District to bring the Heidelberg Choral Society to perform Handel’s Messiah in the Inglewood Town Hall on Sunday November 26th at 2pm.

Bring a score and singalong to the great choruses including the Hallelujah chorus.

Handel's great oratorio Messiah sung by the Heidelberg Choral Society was hosted by us in 2014 and 2017 to great acclaim. The HCS is available as part of their Centenary celebrations to make a rural tour. This performance with sixty singers and orchestra and professional soloists will perform for us before their Melbourne season.

Dear Editor Sport is not only a great way for kids to get ac ve, but it also helps improve their social skills, mental and emo onal health.

That’s why I’m so excited that applica ons are now open for the latest round of the Get Ac ve Kids Voucher Program to support kids and families from across Victoria with the cost of ge ng involved in local sport.

Through the program, eligible families can apply for vouchers of up to $200 per child to use without the worry of upfront costs. Each voucher can be used to pay for memberships, registra on fees, uniforms, and equipment across spor ng codes and recrea onal ac vi es.

We’ve seen more than 115,000 vouchers delivered to deserving families to date – that’s a huge number of kids who might have missed out on the fun of par cipa ng in sport if it weren’t for the vouchers.

I’m so glad even more families can benefit with this new round.

The program encourages kids to par cipate in physical ac vity and maximises support for families who face addi onal barriers to par cipa ng in community sport.

For voucher recipients to be eligible, they must be aged 18 and under, a Victorian resident, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, and named on a valid Medicare

Card at the me of applica on.

A special consideration stream is also available to support kids residing in Victorian Care Services, temporary or provisional visa holders, undocumented migrants and international students aged 18 and under at the time of application.

Applica ons will close once the alloca on has been exhausted. Vouchers can be used up to 30 April 2024. Families can also con nue to claim reimbursement for expenses incurred from 8 May 2023. For more informa on about the program and to apply, visit getac ve.vic.gov.au/vouchers.

Dear Editor Windy weekend weather wasn't ideal for the Gold Rush Fes val Ac vi es. Despite that, crowds of interested people wandered along Broadway and through Gordon Gardens browsing among the varied stalls. Not many braved the breeze to sit and listen to the music for long, but people enjoyed it as a back drop to their browsing. As always food was a big draw card and everywhere people were ea ng delicious looking things. It was obvious that The Dunolly Today Tomorrow Commi ee had worked hard to bring an enjoyable event to Dunolly over the weekend. Well Done!!

Our Pantry hours are Monday to Thursday 1.30 to 3pm inside the Centre. We stock dry goods such as rice, pasta, nned fruit and vegies, long-life milk, and sauces. We also have a chest freezer, which is chockfull of bread and the occasional frozen meal!

If you or someone you know needs a li le bit extra for the pantry, please drop in. The a er-hours pantry on the verandah is always kept stocked, so if you would rather not drop into the Centre itself, feel free to use this service instead.

WHOLE TOWN GARAGE SALE! Saturday 18th November from 8am Registrations are open! Give me a call or drop into the Centre to register. The cost remains $5, and you’ll receive a little pack of goodies including posters for your yellow wheelie bin, a how-to guide plus a decoration for the letterbox or fence. The Centre will be open if any out-oftowners wish to set up a stall here- I already have one household doing just that, so it’s certainly an option.

ATTENTION FAMILIES: Monday the 13th of November 10am to 2pm: The newly formed ‘Goldfields Collec ve’ will be bringing their Community and Health Services ‘POPUP’ to the Neighbourhood Centre!

This a free, not-to-be-missed event for local families will cover kinder registra ons, family support, dental and mental health, maternal and child health, housing and playgroup plus more! It is currently being organised, so please mark it down in your diaries, and tell other families that it’s coming up.

Along with our plants, we're not sure what the spring season is going to throw at us. One day it's hot and the next day it's freezing. We have a whole lot of plants that have decided to go to seed much too early in their cycle. Many of these plants didn't even reach their full size before heading to seed.

No ma er what the weather holds, we're declaring that tomato season is officially upon us.

On Thursday we planted up heaps of tomato plants for sale at the Dunolly Country Market. Most of the tomato plants we have available this year are from saved seeds of the best tomato plants from last season. By saving our seeds each year the plants are becoming more acclima sed to the local weather.

We had a fabulous me at the Country Market. We got to meet lots of folks and sold quite a few tomatoes, some herbs and the last of our pea straw bales.

We s ll have quite a few tomato plants le so if you would like some head down to the Community Garden on Thursday, we have various sizes, and the prices are $2 to $4. We meet Thursdays 3.30pm, 94 Maude Street Dunolly. Come join us!

TOMATO SOUP Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, chopped 1 carrot, peeled and diced finely 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 celery stick, finely chopped 450g/1lb fresh ripe tomatoes, halved 1 tsp sugar 1 litre/1¾ pints vegetable stock

Handful fresh basil, shredded (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onions, carrot, garlic and celery.

Cover and cook gently for 10 minutes until soft.

Add the tomatoes and sugar. Season with salt and pepper, stir and cook for another 5 minutes.

Add the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Liquidise until smooth. If using the basil, stir in just before serving.

This is a fresh and simple soup—perfect for a glut of tomatoes.

Live4Life Program supports mental health of local young people

I

mproving the mental health of local young people and reducing youth suicide is the focus of the Central Goldfields Live4Life program.

Our Shire was chosen to be a Live4Life Community in 2021 due to the collective efforts of Council, local schools and local services who recognised the need for more support for our young people.

Live4Life is the only mental health education and youth suicide prevention model designed specifically for rural and regional communities. This is important because in rural communities like the Central Goldfields, the suicide rate is reportedly 40% higher.

Since its launch earlier this year, the Live4Life program has ramped up with a dedicated project officer appointed to lead the project locally.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Grace La Vella said it was wonderful to see what the Live4Life program has delivered in our community in such a short period of time.

“It has never been more important to assist our rural youth and challenge the stigma associated with mental illness.

We are proud to partner with Youth Live4Life and thrilled to see how our local schools, services and students are responding to the program and their willingness to put themselves forward so that we can support our community to understand the signs and symptoms of mental illness.”

To date the Central Goldfields Live4Life program has delivered: ¨ Establishment of a Partnership Group consisting of local schools, services and Victoria Police who all come together regularly to support Central Goldfields young people with their mental health through the Live4Life model. ¨ 10% of staff at Highview College and Maryborough Education Centre have been trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid. As a result of the training, staff have shared that they now feel more confident in supporting a young person who is experiencing poor mental health and in getting them the help that they need.

Live4Life Project Officer Shelley Feilding and Maryborough Education School Nurse Fiona Phelan have become licensed Teen Mental Health First Aid Instructors to deliver Teen Mental Health First Aid training to Year 8 and Year 10 students.

Highview teacher and Year Level Coordinator Bridget Wilson has also been accepted into an upcoming Instructor course.

Year 8’s from Highview College (approximately 60+ students) have completed their Teen Mental Health

First Aid training.

Year 8’s from Maryborough Education Centre have also recently commenced Teen Mental Health First Aid training.

Teen Mental Health First Aid training gives young people skills and confidence to look after themselves and their friends. One of the key messages from the training is about involving a trusted and responsible adult, especially in a mental health crisis.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is delivered to adults to equip them with the skills to assist young people.

Training our students and community in Mental Health First Aid is vital given that suicide is the leading cause of death of Australian young people and that 75% of people with mental ill health have their first episode during adolescence. The training provided is based on research and guidelines developed by experts and people with lived experience and is currently delivered both nationally and internationally.

In the future, parents, community leaders and sporting coaches will have the opportunity to participate in Youth Mental Health First Aid training so they can provide appropriate support and refer young people to professional help, if needed.

It’s these key individuals in our young people’s lives who may be the first to notice if a young person is having a hard time.

Oh My – Halloween Craft is Great for Spooking up

From dressing up to trick-or-trea ng, there’s no doubt about it, kids love Halloween.

Cra expert, Shannon Wong-Nizic who runs paren ng hub Oh Crea ve Day , says that crea ng and making Halloween costumes and decora ons is a great way to s mulate kids’ imagina ons.

“World-building and storytelling is an important part of a crea ve childhood which is why Halloween really captures kids’ imagina ons – it makes anything possible!” She says. Here, Shannon shares her top ps for Halloween cra ing with the kids.

Set the scene – create a fun, spooky mood for your Halloween cra ac vity. Dim the lights, put some ghoulsome music on to transport your li le cra ers to another world, where the only limit is their imagina on. Kids love to immerse themselves in a crea ve adventure and Halloween is the perfect opportunity to go all out!

Simple Symbols – from cats to bats, to witches and ghosts – Halloween is burs ng with symbols that can be drawn free-hand or can be traced and cut-out to create fantas c masks, costumes and decora ons. For li le children, prac sing cu ng out with scissors helps build fine motor skills as well as confidence.

Tools for the job – so many parents say they dislike cra due to the mess. I hear you!

You don’t need to go gli er glue crazy to create fabulous artwork. Scissors, Sellotape or a glue s ck and some colours are all you need. My advice is to keep it simple. I love using paint markers such as Pilot Pintor because they are low mess and require no set-up or cleaning a er, plus the colours are pleasingly vibrant.

Balance it out – young ar sts can some mes find a blank page confron ng. Ideally, we want to encourage them to engage in crea ve ac vi es that are open-ended and where they have a choice over their designing and making. We also need to find that balance between guiding and scaffolding, which is why some mes a template can be helpful. They can cut it out, colour and create it how they like, then add their own touches to create a unique artwork to be proud of.

It has a ‘haunted door’ they can open and close and use their imagina on to create their own cute or creepy creature to hide behind and even build their own story. EXCITEMENT AT THE LONDON CHARTERED BANK

T

he Welcome Stranger, an over-sized nugget discovered at Moliagul in 1869, was bought into the township of Dunolly to the London Chartered Bank.

A major find like this cannot be kept a secret no matter how hard you try and word spread like wildfire throughout the surrounding community.

The nugget was loaded into a wooden dray and pulled by a sturdy draughthorse along Broadway with Messer’s Deason and Oates also on board to escort it to the bank.

Children ran along behind the dray joining in the excitement. Men and women spilled onto Broadway from homes and businesses, wanting to witness the historical event.

The scales bought out from the interior of the bank and with the anvil was set up on the steps, saw the blacksmith summoned to preform the division of the nugget. The safe was not big enough to hold the nugget nor was safe carriage assured in one piece, to Melbourne.

The crowd gasped at the size of the nugget as it was revealed for all to see. The Bank Manager had to excuse himself as an expletive escaped his lips (in front of decent women) on viewing the expanse of the nugget. In the crowd a single rebellious voice rang out ‘Down with British Sovereignty, Long live the Republic!’.

With the blacksmith’s work deftly performed. the nugget was divided and stored for cartage under guard.

Dapper gentlemen, finely dressed ladies, humble folk and crusty diggers joined as one as they thronged Broadway. Intermingling, passing pleasantries of the day and congratulating the owners of the now famous nugget. Such excitement had not been seen before or since that day when the Welcome Stranger came to the town of Dunolly!

The Federal Government’s Fee-Free TAFE ini a ve has been an enormous success, with the newest federal data showing the enrolment target has been significantly exceeded, with the program remaining within budget.

The figures show that Fee-Free TAFE has a racted more than 214,000 Australians enrolments in its first six months, meaning the program has hit its targets six months ahead of schedule.

Senator for Victoria Jana Stewart said that enrolment figures for Fee-Free TAFE con nued to climb and showed that Australians were hungry to re-train and fill vital skill shortages with the program helping Australians to acquire new skills, and to access jobs.

Na onally, 25,000 Australians now enrolled in A TAFE course have a culturally or linguis cally diverse background.

“1 in 3 of Fee-Free TAFE enrolments in Victoria are from a regional or remote area, meaning country students will get the skills they need, and our economy needs, for the future,” Senator Stewart said.

Over 15,000 people with a disability have enrolled, and almost 7,000 are First Na ons Australians. Women make up over 60 percent of enrolments, with more than 35 percent of total enrolments being in cri cal parts of our care sector.

A er the referendum on Saturday, when everyone had used a new pencil to vote, I had one of my random thoughts.

I wondered what happens to the millions of pencils used that day. Are they packed away to be used for the next elec on, or thrown away and wasted?

The cat was in a snoot with me last week, as I had the cheek to throw out the blanket she sleeps on and replaced it with a nice warm fresh one. She ignored it for a couple of days and then deigned to sleep on it.

They were banging into the fence as they ran along.

A li le while later there was one running around in the back yard. I think it was a different lizard, as I don't think it could have travelled that far in that short amount of me.

FARMER COUNSELLING SESSIONS DOUBLE AS DRY CONDITIONS WORSEN Australian farmers are seeking mental health support at almost twice the rate they were seeking assistance last year, according to trusted rural charity, Rural Aid. In the past two months, Rural Aid counsellors have conducted 277 counselling sessions, a 95 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

Rural Aid’s counselling helpline is currently fielding an average of 13 calls each day from primary producers.

Rural Aid offers free, confidential counselling to farmers, their family members, and their workers.

Rural Aid’s Manager of Mental Health and Wellbeing, Myf Pitcher, said the range of topics that farmers are worried about has also recently widened.

“This time last year, our farmers were primarily coming to us with concerns about flooding and stress,” Myf said. “At the moment, farmers are worried about bushfires, dry conditions, water scarcity, fodder, varroa mite and poor stock prices”.

Sheep and cattle farmer Ron Dooley said the Rural Aid counselling service helped him get through a difficult time after the Black Summer bushfires.

“I had a bit of a mishap when I was fighting the front of the fire. I couldn’t see where I was going and I ran into a dam wall and stalled the tractor with the flames coming through the bottom of the tractor,” Ron said.

“It was a bit hard when you sat back after that and thought back to what could have been” “After talking with Darren from Rural Aid, he [helped me to make] some decisions on what to do when feeling like that, and it did help,” Ron said.

Rural Aid’s East Gippsland Counsellor and Community Representative, Darren Devlin, said farmers can easily get overwhelmed by the myriad of decisions they encounter after a disaster.

Rural Aid counsellors catch up with their farmers where they’re most comfortable; whether it’s on farm, in town, or over the phone.

We’re back in our newly refurbished hall. The hall looks fresh and so did our bowlers a er the break.

There was a good roll-up this week and, as it was supper night, that meant it was bowling to wherever ki y was rolled.

The scoreboards didn’t always reflect the top-class bowling; with some amazing shots being played.

Congratula ons to Pam Brightwell & Malcolm Campbell finishing with two wins & a draw to just pip Gary McClelland, Lyle Streeter & Karen Waters on two wins.

Supper followed and the raffle was won by Malcolm Campbell. Players were also no fied of the AGM set for Thursday November 9th at 7pm.

Next to the crease was Sam Bartle who steadied the ship. Both Hanne and Bartle would see off the early challenge thrown at them and runs started flowing, the 100-run partnership came up and was a much needed one at that.

Shortly a er both ba ers were able to pass 50 runs with no signs of slowing down. Bartle and Hanne were able to finish off the game Bartle finishing with 68 not out and Hanne closing it out with 55 not out.

A great team win a er being under pressure early in the game.

That win takes us to 3 wins and 0 losses to start the season.

Laanecoorie Dunolly Cricket Club Match report The day started off with Maryborough winning the toss and elec ng to bat first.

It was Sam Bartle and Joe Lovel who opened the bowling. Maryborough’s openers went to work early, and it was hard work for our bowlers who toiled hard in the early stages of the game.

They were on a roll with the bat before a persistent Daniel Romeo broke the opening stand with a stunning catch from captain Ma Smith. Slowly the game turned our way with the wickets star ng to fall more frequently.

At drinks, we had them two wickets down for 112.

Our bowlers slowly started to get some reward for their effort. New recruit, Sergio Rosier was a key part of wrestling momentum our way with figures of 3/39.

Romeo joined Rosier with 3 wickets taking 3/41.

Luke Smith and Sam Bartle each took their first wicket for the club, Smith taking 1/21 and Bartle taking 1/34, Lovel also finished with 1 wicket taking 1/27.

A commendable fightback from our bowlers to restrict Maryborough to 170. It was then our turn to bat. Luke Smith and Tom Hanne were the two at the top who got us started but Maryborough were up for the challenge capturing the wicket of Smith early for 16.
