REMEMBRANCE DAY
SATURDAY 11TH NOVEMBER, 2023 COMMENCING AT 10.45AM Remembrance Service will be held at the Cenotaph on Broadway at Dunolly Post Office. “LEST WE FORGET”.
TOGETHER WE REMEMBER 2023 POPPY APPEAL UNDERWAY
Each year, in the lead-up to Remembrance Day the Dunolly/Bealiba RSL runs its Poppy Appeal to raise much-needed funds for veterans and their families around the state. RSL members have been out and about with the poppy badges and there have been a few new ones this year. Dunolly & Bealiba RSL President Richard Gale said, “With the increased public awareness of the many struggles that our veterans and their families so frequently face – including increased housing instability and a suicide risk that is 30 per cent higher than the rest of the community - we hope Victorians one and all will sense the urgency of this cause and buy a poppy. “ For over 100 years, the Victorian community has made both Remembrance Day and our corresponding Poppy Appeal part of their lives. We are so thankful for the warm support we receive. As the Royal Commission has revealed, however, much more needs to be done to ensure our veteran community is supported in mes of crisis and need. This is the RSL’s mission and we cannot achieve it without the public’s help. The funds raised through the RSL’s Poppy Appeal enable us to deliver much needed assistance to those men and women who have served our country and who now need our support.” The Welcome Record — Wednesday 8th November - Page 2
CHECK YOUR HOME BATTERY SYSTEMS LG Energy Solu on Australia urges households to check home ba ery systems due to Electrical Safety Recalls. LG Energy Solu on Australia is working with the Australian Compe on & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to urge all households with a solar system to check if their system includes a recalled LG ESS Home Energy Storage System ba ery. Affected ba eries may overheat and catch fire resul ng in injury, death and/or damage to property. Incidents have occurred and caused damage to property. Philip Cro y, Managing Director, LG Energy Solu on Australia said, “We cannot stress the importance enough: Australians need to check their home ba eries. If you have checked your ba ery before, please check it again as new serial numbers have been added. If you have friends, family or neighbours with a ba ery, please ask them to check their units too. It is essen al that we iden fy all affected ba eries and ensure the safety of customers through this recall.” To iden fy if an LG ESS Home Energy Storage System ba ery is affected, households need to check the unique serial number. Affected ba eries can be contained in both LG and non-LG branded home energy storage system ba eries. LG serial numbers can be checked via
RAINBOW LORIKEET TOPS AUSSIE BIRD COUNT A decade of rainbows— the Rainbow Lorikeet tops the 10th Annual Aussie Bird Count. BirdLife Australia, leaders for bird conversa on in Australia, today revealed the preliminary results for the Aussie Bird Count. With more than 420,000 counted, the colourful Rainbow Lorikeet once again comes out on top, bea ng the Noisy Mynah with nearly 220,000 and the iconic Australian Magpie with around 154,000 counted. In total, over 80,000 Aussies counted more than 3.6 million birds during the week submi ng over 100,000 checklists and observing 658 bird species. “The enthusiasm with which Australians have taken to the Aussie Bird Count has been outstanding,” said BirdLife Australia's Na onal Public Affairs Manager, Sean Dooley.
www.lghomebatery.com.au/isyourba erysafe If households are unable to locate their ba ery’s serial number, LG Energy Solu on Australia will arrange on site visits to assist. The list of affected ba eries has been recently updated to include new dates of manufacture so all households with home ba eries need to re-check their units to iden fy any poten al risk. If an affected ba ery is iden fied, it must be switched off immediately and households should contact LG Energy Solu on Australia’s support team for next steps. For safety, any affected ba ery should not be switched back on un l the product is remedied. Under the recall ac ons, a so ware update is required in some cases, whereas others will require a free replacement or refund. All replacement ba eries carry a new 10 year warranty and performance guarantee. LG Energy Solu on Australia is offering financial compensa on to consumers to offset any increase to electricity bills due to switched off or shutdown ba eries. Over the past 10 years, the Aussie Bird Count has helped raise the profile of Australia’s bird life and encouraged thousands of people around the country to connect with nature. “In addi on to being good for our mental health, bird watching is o en the first step towards nature conserva on. We can’t protect something if we don’t know how it is faring in the first place.” With nearly 1 in 6 bird species in Australia at risk of ex nc on from threats such as climate change, habitat loss, fires, and invasive species, BirdLife Australia relies on data to inform priori es and insights from monitoring projects such as the count to help shape our broader Bird Conserva on Strategy, aiming to halt bird ex nc ons by 2032 and overall bird declines by 2050. The results will be closely ve ed by BirdLife Australia’s avian experts with a comprehensive data release for the Aussie Bird Count scheduled for December this year. Congratula ons Dear Editor, Congratula ons to The Welcome Record Team for winning the CNAV Best Community Newspaper 2023. That is very definitely something to be proud of. I was fortunate to a end a very early CNAV annual conference and was blown away by the dedica on and work ethic of the other par cipants, and I am sure that has not changed. Over the years The Welcome Record has won a number of CNAV awards, all of them well deserved as is this one. Enjoy your moment. Vicky Frizzell PS Thank you Heather Cooper for your well researched comments on crows.
New Tourism Display Dear Editor, I recently viewed the new audio visual at the revamped Maryborough Tourist Informa on Centre. It could be described as from the view of ‘how the miners ruined the environment and how the Aborigines are repairing it.' I suggest people look for themselves and decide if it is a fair representa on of our district. There is not one men on of modern metal detec ng. This is the main form of tourism to the shire but unfortunately the shire does not include them in their tourism figures. It goes against what they want.
Vale Jeff Borch 24-12-1959 to 17 -7-2023 Jeff had his last days with his family by his side and passed away peacefully on 17th July. His passing comes a er a courageous 12 year long ba le with cancer. A funeral was held for Jeff near the family home in Pakenham on 28 July, followed by a private crema on. However, Jeff was a long- me Dunolly resident and loved the bush. Accordingly, we plan to sca er Jeff’s ashes in the Central Victorian bushland. Date: 18th November 2023 Time: 1.30pm Place: Moliagul Historic Reserve, one of Jeff’s favourite places to be. The Moliagul Historic Reserve sign is about 12 mins. from Dunolly, just past the Moliagul Cemetery on the Le Hand Side (when coming from Dunolly) and just a er the sign, there is a track which leads into the bush where we plan to meet. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome.

The Shire is pushing for World Heritage status and con nuously say they will not restrict access to public land. This technically is correct. If World Heritage is granted, a management body will be set up and it is they who will decide what happens. The Shire could easily have promoted gold prospec ng and other forest ac vi es and made tourists feel welcome. Instead, the money was used to promote the grand plans of a few, whose long term idea is to lock up the forests. I suspect this le er will elicit a long rambling response that adds li le and admits nothing. hen I go to Maryborough, I usually buy sandwiches and a coffee and go to the back of Prince’s Park near the swimming pool to eat lunch. There is a lot that goes on in the park … people crossing to who knows where, people ea ng at the table being begged from, by Maggies and lots of dog walkers. I watched one lady training her dog to sit, wait and jump through a hoop. There are also lots of birds including a family of wagtails that reckon they own the park. I saw on the News the other night that the State is going to spend $4 million dollars on fireworks for New Year celebra ons. Talk about bread and circuses. Don't know if the car I saw parked near the gardens is a local or not, but they have an interes ng number plate - 2 bums. I kid you not.
Saw an advert for hypnosis to help people stop smoking naturally. I thought that only fires and volcanoes smoke naturally, but I know what they mean. I saw a small goanna racing across the road last week. I think goannas are creepy creatures. ROSIE
