Welcome to the RED Issue.

Every Summer when the hot weather arrives, we look to our local Fire Brigades in our District to keep us safe.

The RED Issue is dedicated to our Dunolly Fire Brigade volunteers who put their lives at risk each and every me they unwaveringly respond to a call for help.

You would think that although alarmed when they arrive at your home or property due to a fire event that they would be welcomed as you are relieved by their mely presence and grateful for their help.

However that is not always the case.

Recently, during an early morning call, an irritated owner complained about their sirens on arrival grumbling “Do you have to be so noisy.. Who’s going to put my child back to sleep now?”.

It never occurred to that owner that each volunteer fireman who arrived at his property may also have children whose sleep was uninten onally disturbed. As one volunteer put it - ”Who’s going to put “MY child back to bed?” The big difference between the two parents is that one is unselfishly there to help the other. Our Fire Brigade Volunteers deserve be er.

Children's Hospice - A Lifeline for Regional Families

R

egional families living with terminally ill children o en feel isolated and alone.

Thankfully, this is where Very Special Kids House comes in, the only facility of its calibre in Australia and the only children’s hospice in Victoria.

The newly rebuilt Very Special Kids House held its grand opening on November 21, marking a new era of world-class holis c pallia ve care for children and young people with life-limi ng illnesses. Very Special Kids CEO Michael Wasley said the new facility would improve the quality of life for regional children.

“The new Very Special Kids House is a world-class facility that will make a real difference in the lives of Victoria’s sickest children and their families when they need support most.” Mr Wasley said.

Although a paediatric pallia ve care facility, the state -of-the-art new centre is designed as a bright ‘home away from home’ featuring spaces for music and art therapy, a wheelchair-accessible playground, a hydrotherapy pool, and a resident therapy dog called Jaffa.

For 13-year-old Numurkah resident, Charlo e Hall, a stay with Very Special Kids is life changing. “It gives me a holiday when I kind of need it. It gives me a place to go and have fun without my siblings and where I can be myself. When I come back home, I say ‘Mum, when is my next me?” she said.

The hundreds of kilometres between Charlo e in Numurkah and Very Special Kids are no hurdle.

SUPPORTS AND GRANTS FOR VICTORIAN VETERANS

T

he Vic State Government is honouring the service and sacrifice of veterans across Victoria, with new wellbeing supports and grant programs for veterans.

Applica ons are now open for the two programs suppor ng facility upgrades for community organisa ons, as well as the recipients of the Victoria Remembers and Anzac Day Proceeds Fund grants.

Member for Ripon Martha Hayle welcomed the announcement,

“Our veterans have given so much to our rural and regional communi es. These grants will improve their building facili es so that everyone can pay their respects and learn about our na on’s history.”

The Veterans Capital Works program gives local organisa ons funding to upgrade their buildings and facili es for Victoria’s veterans.

Interested organisa ons can apply for grants from $5,000 up to $50,000 for projects that can be completed within a year.

This program has

supported 55 projects since 2021 to complete building and facility upgrades such as the Creswick-Smeaton RSL Sub-Branch which received $33,830 to con nue their work on building maintenance and access improvements.

The Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour program provides grants of up to $30,000 for projects that restore community war memorials, honour rolls and avenues of honour and closes on 29 January.

The Anzac Day Proceeds Fund supports ex-service organisa ons to deliver a range of ac vi es that boost the wellbeing of veterans.

Grants have also been awarded to 27 projects through the Victoria Remembers grant program, which provides grants of up to $30,000 for projects that honour veterans’ service or educate Victorians on veterans’ contribu ons.

HALLELUJAH! A JOYOUS, TRIUMPHANT MESSIAH

L

ast Sunday afternoon on the 26th November, the exquisitely restored Inglewood Town Hall was filled with the glorious music of Handel’s Messiah by the Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra.

The musical afternoon was led by renowned conductor Peter Bandy featuring soloists Teresa Ingrilli (soprano), Dimity Shepherd (mezzo soprano), Timothy Reynolds (tenor) and Oliver Mann (baritone) with our own Queen Victoria joining in as part of the Chorale.

The 150 strong audience enthusiastically joined in the famous Hallelujah Chorus, thoroughly delighted for having experienced this ‘world-class’ performance.

The Dunolly Gilbert & Sullivan Society presented the event in partnership with the Community Bank MALDON & District.

The Society also acknowledges and is grateful for the generous support of the Peggy and Leslie Cranbourne Foundation and Henkell Wines. BRAVO! DUNOLLY NEIGHBOURHOOD PANTRY Monday to Thursday, 1.30 to 3pm at the Centre.

This is a ‘dry pantry’, so we stock items that have a long shelf-life. This service is open to any community member needing that li le bit extra. The ‘a er hours’ pantry is on the veranda and is kept stocked for anyone unable to visit during opening hours. We are now able to offer frozen vegies and bread.

CHRISTMAS HAMPER DRIVE: Just like last year, the Dunolly Neighbourhood Centre will be providing Christmas hampers to people in our community who need a li le Christmas cheer.

If you would like to contribute some Christmas fare, feel free to drop it off here at the Centre during opening hours. Some people in our community have done it tough this year, so this is a good opportunity to let them know that their community cares.

SOLAR PANEL PROJECT NEARS ITS COMPLETION! Next Monday, the Centre will receive a visit from EnviroShop Newstead, for the installa on of our solar panels on the woodwork shed! This exci ng development is courtesy of a lot of fundraising, plus some generous grants from Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, Community Bank Maldon and District, and Central Goldfields Shire Council. It will make such a difference to our running costs when they’re up and running, as the bulk of our ac vi es take place during daylight hours. I’ll make sure I get the camera snapping when the installa on is taking place. Just a reminder to our woodworkers- no woodwork on Tuesday the 5th due to the installa on.

Flood repair works con nue to roll out Delivering the upgrades needed to repair and restore our road infrastructure following last year’s flood event con nues to be a focus for Central Goldfields Shire.

Whilst a significant amount of works has been carried out, there are several packages of works to repair roads, bridges and associated infrastructure s ll to be delivered.

Life Savings Lost to Tech support Scam A 76-year-old man s ll working to make ends meet said Australian banks should be compelled to return money stolen by scam operators a er he was fleeced of his life's savings.

Victoria's Ralph Chandler placed $15,000 into a fixedterm deposit to earn high interest for 90 days.

On the morning of September 1, Mr Chandler shut down his work computer to turn to his home laptop.

His bank account was already open and he saw a popup screen claiming to be from so ware company Microso that said, 'Warning, warning, please phone this number' with a New South Wales (02) code.

He called the number. "A woman answered and said, 'You've got an issue, that hackers are trying to get into your banking system'," Mr Chandler said.

Mr Chandler's losses included $15,000 from a fixedterm deposit account.

"She was pu ng some stuff across the screen to blank it out while she stole my money.

"I had $15,000 in a fixed deposit, which I thought was untouchable, but apparently, it's only untouchable for the first 90 days." he said.

Within 10 minutes the scammer had moved the

money around, transferring $15,000 from the fixedterm account to Mr Chandler's transac on account where there was another $5,000.

Bank statements show that $21,200 in total was removed by the scammer, leaving Mr Chandler and his wife, Sue, with $85.30 to their name.

"I realised, 'Well, hang on, what's all this stuff on the screen?', and realised what happened, and I rang the bank," Mr Chandler added.

The ACCC says Australians are vulnerable to scams because their banks do not have a uniform set of rules. A report by Microso found Australians were the second highest targeted popula on for tech support scams.

I

uncovered a surprising, and completely useless collec on (as opposed to my really useful other one's) which has rather crept up on me.

For some months I have been tossing the empty toilet roll centres into the magazine rack in the li lest room.

I gathered them up today and there are 24 of them. They will be going into the recycle bin immediately.

Did you know that there is a unique tree in Dunolly? It is very rare, and it is not the cork tree.

It is situated in a front garden in Inkerman Street. The owner calls it a jug tree, but Yew tree sounds much more mysterious.

I no ced a very useful piece of informa on on one of those paper supermarket bags.

It warned not to get the bag wet as "the strength of the bag is compromised ".

Who would have thought?

Good to see Elkie's happy smiling face back at the Friendly Grocer and a welcome to the new owners.

Due to the fact I could not get to my usual lunch spot because of the road closures for the Energy Breakthrough, I found myself at the end of Franklin St (not that I was lost, mind you, just a bit disorientated, like half the popula on by the number of U-turns I saw).

It was in a nice quiet bush place called the Alex Power Reserve. I enjoyed lunch watching the birds and bu erflies. It is beside the far end of the golf course, and I reckon l will go back again.

ustralia is famed for its wildlife, and toxic spiders like the Sydney funnel web and red back are household names.

Despite our worries about them very few people die from spider bites.

Spiders are naturally shy creatures, hiding under beds and other dark out of the way places.

Orb spiders love our gardens and are natural predators of mosquitos and other flying insects.

They weave webs to catch nightly prey and sit atop the web facing down. When something flies into it, they quickly climb down and wrap them in silk un l ready to feed.

Of the wide variety of orb spiders in Australia probably the best known is the Golden Orb which spins a brownish web.

In my fernery there are plenty of spiders, but I have never seen a Golden Orb there.

The orbs at my place are nocturnal with very pre y colours when a light catches them. It is best to see them when I sit quietly.

Apparently, most spiders can hear through a mechanism involving the hairs on their legs, and orbs do that too.

While they do bite humans and pets, they rarely affect us much.

Their venom has evolved for different prey.

People who are hypersensi ve to

their venom can get a nasty reac on though.

They live in leaf li er or garden debris during the day, and if a keen gardener is clearing their yard, that is when they may be bi en.

Watching spiders climb up and down their webs is a very pleasant end to a warm day.

I wish them good hun ng. But I know very well some of them will be part of the birds buffet the next morning.

Cards, as well as decora ons for home and table, are at the Op Shop just wai ng to bring some Christmas cheer. Lovely baubles for the Christmas tree, which look as fresh as they did straight out of the original shop.

For a gi for those hard to select folk, try a Santa decorated mug, filled with sweets, wrapped in cellophane, ed with a bow.

Decorate a pillowcase with fabric paint, perhaps with the first le er of the gi receiver’s name.

These are excellent for storing items of clothing for the teenager who fails to comprehend pu ng away their washed smalls or socks.

Much of the Op Shop linen stock can become useful a rac ve wrapping, simply by using pinking shears.

DUNOLLY GOLF CLUB As the end of year approaches, all members are cordially invited to our Christmas break up.

The A grade side is undefeated this season with some notable performances.

South African recruit Luke Smith is leading the way with the bat for Laane-Dunolly on 325 runs with an average of 81.25 ahead of Tom Hanne on 220 runs

with an average of 40.

Joe Lovel leads the bowling performance on 10 wickets averaging a wicket every 15 runs.

This is just ahead of club faithful Daniel Romeo on 9 wickets.

Youngster Thang Nguyen who has come through the junior ranks has been rewarded for his dedica on with senior game me and is acqui ng himself admirably.

The junior compe on is kicking off and the U13s are training well.

A Great Year for Martial Arts Instructors & members from Kintsugi Mar al Arts (Dunolly Karate Dojo) have had a great year of training together!

It has been great to see our members achieve not only karate milestones, such as a grading, but also fitness goals too.

As 2023 comes to an end, we'd like to remind the community our dojo closes for Dec/Jan, and we look forward to seeing you all back in the dojo on 31st Jan. New members always welcome.
