I thought I must be seeing things when I went through town on Wednesday. There were at least two cars in the street that looked like escapees from an ac on movie One was very low to the ground and very expensivelooking. The other looked like the owner had built it himself They were a rac ng a lot of a en on, mainly from male passers-by.
Same day in Maryborough l saw a sign that seemed to say that the local police had all gone to a higher place It is on the corner of Nolan and Clarendon Street, it says POLICE and is poin ng up to the sky

There is a par cularly nasty scam that appeared on my Gmail page, saying that they could recover any monies that were in deceased estates and asking permission to do so for me (good luck there) It made me feel quite ill
While I was in Maryborough, I saw a man trundling along Alma St in charge of two push bikes. He was riding one and guiding the other one with his free hand. Pre y good effort.
Heard on the ABC that scien sts studying snakes have proved that they (the snakes) can hear sound through the air, not just ground vibra ons. Their ears are in folds near their eyes. That should brighten your day.
I o en wonder, in idle moments, who decided to use their forks upside down, like the Americans, and then convinced others to follow suit Handy for picking up peas and pasta, but a bit awkward for meats etc

I always approach my veggie garden with op mism following the usual hot Summer and with the approaching milder Autumn, comes rain which sparks enthusiasm.
Last year, my daughter was visi ng a er a couple of years including COVID, so I wanted to make a special effort.
My brother-in-law had generously forked over the area and added animal manure, so all was set for a successful growing season. Plots were marked out and rows placed.
Broad beans are popular at my house so they were planted first Silver beet is another showy edible, then broccolini which was a new venture
All was progressing well!
I had two varie es of seed potato so when my daughter arrived in August, we lovingly enjoyed plan ng those True, there wasn’t any produce to eat but proof of my endeavours were there and
fun was had My daughter’s visit came to an end before the humid weather cycle struck from the north My backyard is always at risk of flooding with heavy down pours.
Under, went the veggie patch and I feared for the potatoes Then the mildew struck the broad beans, followed by wind which blew from all quarters
Somehow the beans being about three feet high, managed to stand! The weather pa ern moved on.
Spring arrived, beans were picked (a fair crop), potatoes flowered then dug, presen ng me with excitement and lots of new potatoes to eat and store Sadly, the silver beet went to seedsomething for the hens to eat Broccolini turned into ‘Gigantos’, two foot high leaves but not a sign of flowers or heads, sigh! But as always with gardening, pa ence paid off and lots of meals were picked as it matured Hopefully it won’t put me off this year!

Meals on Wheels, My Aged Care, and services available for the future
I’ve had the opportunity to assist my neighbour this week with an inquiry into Meals on Wheels availability and how to access other services
The Central Goldfields Shire Council-run Meals on Wheels service visits Dunolly on Mondays, and the cost per meal is $10.70.
The meals are delivered cold-chilled but can be popped in the freezer to use later.
To access this service and other services such as home-help, you need to be assessed through the Federal Government’s ‘My Aged Care’ service
This is a government subsidised service to help elderly people remain in their home longer, or to find the right aged care home for their individual needs. There is a phone number you can use: 1800 200 422 or the inquiry can be made online
If you think this service is something you would like to get started, but find it all a bit daun ng, I’m happy to offer my assistance as an advocate. Just give me a call, and I’ll set aside some me for you to get it started.

Over the past few weeks, we invited our community to share their views on the Commonwealth Home support program (Aged Care Review) that provides in home support and other aged care services in Central Goldfields Shire.

Dunolly Community Garden News
By Liz Spiteri
This week the Community Garden had two days of ac vi es. Due to the hot weather forecasted for Thursday a ernoon we decided to have an early ‘meet-up’.
Anna was busily working away when Michael & I arrived Between the three of us, tomatoes were harvested, gardens were watered, damaged fruit collected and disposed of, as well as a small amount of weeding
Because we were planning our stall for the Dunolly Country Market, I spent me packaging up seeds while Anna worked on the cupboards Shortly before we were ready to pack up for the morning, Rick arrived, so he died up the edges of the walkway with his trimmer
On Sunday we had our stall at the market! Veronica, Lisa and I looked a er the stall and met so many lovely community members. We very much enjoyed cha ng with everyone and hearing about how they are using the share table to drop off their excess harvests or how they jump at the chance to get some lovely fresh tomatoes, plums etc, these
Op Shop News

stories made our hearts sing! Obviously the Share Table is a ‘give and take’, we need people to share their home harvests, and we love people to take what they need, even if they are unable to gi back to our Share Table. We're very hopeful some of the people we met through the markets will join us on a Thursday in the near future. If we didn't get to meet you, pop down and introduce yourself!

ONLY IN DUNOLLY!
The End of an Era – Farewell to the Gold & Grain Café
Well, we all knew that it was going to happen eventually, but most of us have probably been like ostriches and hidden our heads in the sand, un l last week’s reality check.
Watching many hospitality businesses in Dunolly come and go over the years, or else change ownership and focus, the Gold & Grain has been a breath of fresh air in town, providing a constant in these ever-changing mes. A great tourism drawcard, Linda, Georgine and their wonderful staff have embraced the Café patrons who have visited from far and wide to sample the many delights on the menu. They have made many friends in the process, many of whom have treated the café as a home-awayfrom-home! The ambience and décor of the Café suited all seasons, with a roaring fire in the winter and a shady dining area on the deck, to cater for relaxed lunches on hot summer days
vagaries of the public during those mes, the family rallied and reinvented the business, changing the focus to catering for the a ernoon and evening market, including their very popular takeaway pizzas.
We are sure that everyone understands the reasons for Linda and Georgine’s re rement, as they have both owned hospitality businesses for many years. Although they will be sorely missed, one thing for sure is that they will close the Gold & Grain with an even wider circle of
Thankfully, they will all be staying around Dunolly, so we will not be losing them completely The property at 71 Broadway will remain on the market. It is hoped that in the near future, an entrepreneur with a hospitality background will decide to purchase and move into the comfortable residence and take up the challenge of opening a new restaurant or café, with an already established, well-equipped commercial kitchen and clientele.

For some weeks, I could only manage to get him to talk by bringing up subjects that I thought might interest him
Then one day, a er quite a few visits, when I arrived, he came in and announced with a big smile, “Guess what, I am ge ng my bedroom painted.” That was quite a breakthrough.
His mother lived interstate and he had lived here since he was a toddler with his dad. He loved cooking, so we would whip up biscuits or li le cakes.
At the end of the session he would take them into his classroom and would tell the class how they were
made, and then everyone would clamour for one and he would hand them round That certainly was good for his ego.
He loved sport and was such a good footballer that some mes when he was in Grades 5 and 6, he played with the under 17s.
This small, wiry boy would swerve in between the bigger players, get the ball and kick a goal. His aim was to one day play in the AFL.
He also coerced me into playing golf and he decided he would be ‘Happy Gilmour’,so we set up a ‘hole’ between the goal posts and of course he always ran rings around me.
I visited this young man un l he went to high school and some mes, he would drop round to my house with a mate and offer to do odd jobs
I would give them pocket money to barrow the firewood up to the house or sweep the shed. When he visited, he was always carrying a football. I used to go to the school concerts with his dad to cheer him on; his dad referred to me as his ‘other mother’ and I was very chuffed.
A er he le school, he got himself an appren ceship and s ll played footy but unfortunately an injury and the demands of his job put paid to his football career He came one day to introduce me to his lovely girlfriend
I call him one of my success stories Cynthia

What an amazing happening week for Flynn Ward. The Pool Party and the Dunolly Country Market were extremely well-patronised and quite possibly overshadowed the Skate Park opening.
The community of Flynn ward be proud and keep se ng your standards high
Extremely well done and fantas c to see, be part of and hear great reports
While driving around Flynn Ward this weekend, we no ced the number of fallen limbs and trees on the roadside everywhere
This was men oned to us while a ending the Dunolly Market. A number of people showed concern how, over the past two years this has not been addressed. Quite possibly, since the SES opera ons were paused - could it be that the amazing work the SES did has not been picked up by the Shire?
Once again this highlights the value of our volunteer groups around our Shire.
Please support our volunteer groups.
Another concern was that it appears Microdevelopments are being passed on a regular basis by Council in the Maryborough area, yet there are many planning applica ons outside the Maryborough area which are being stalled, ignored or not ac oned
Our Councillors need to be aware of this, we need to raise this issue with all of Council and have this issue
addressed, and addressed immediately.
In the Council’s second quarter update, many projects listed for Flynn Ward s ll seem to be si ng idle.
Is it me our Councillors and Council realise that there is more to the Central Goldfields Shire than Maryborough?
The Dunolly community is certainly doing their bit with their events, which are leading the Shire with tourism
Maybe it's me they got some recogni on from the Shire It is great to hear from the community how well they have done, it would be nice to receive some more support from Council
A er all, it certainly appears Flynn Ward seems to be doing the lion’s share of tourism for our Shire. No $2 million gold display, no $3 million Art Gallery, and the list goes on.
Well done Flynn Ward - stand tall and be proud. Our next Ratepayers mee ng will be in Dunolly on 4th April - me and loca on TBC
Thank you all and please look a er each other

Although the weather chose cloudy skies to grace the day, it did not stop us from making the Dunolly Pool Party the perfect way to celebrate the end of Summer
With a giant inflatable slide and jumping castle, slushies and popcorn on offer, along with the CFA’s sausage sizzle, Wheelie Bean Coffee, Whataburger and the Pool Kiosk, kept the 300+ crowd well fed on the day
With all proceeds from all sales going to our worthy volunteer- run CFA, the Pool Party raised just over $1,100.
Captain Greg Humphrey said, “Special Thanks to Jake, his family and everyone in the community
who came and supported the day which helped us raise much needed funds. We even ran out of sausages and had to re-stock!”
Organised by Jake ‘Everywhere’ Meyer who made this happen within a two week period by harnessing the power of community support said he’d like to “thank everyone involved organising this community event and providing all the fun.
Big thanks for your me and effort…the kids’ smiles, the families spending the day out and the size of the crowd speaks for itself!”
We can’t wait for this to be a regular Summer in Dunolly event. Well done Dunolly!
