Q: What are your best tips for exploring NYC like a local?

A: Depending on one’s schedule and time, it is truly wonderful to explore various residential neighborhoods such as the Upper West Side, Upper East Side and other areas that do not necessarily have famous landmarks or sightseeing attractions but “hidden gems” that local New Yorkers frequent. For example, the East Side neighborhood of Beekman Place not only contains historic homes such as the original home of Irving Berlin, who wrote the famous song White Christmas, but also there are parks and gardens with a lovely promenade walkway along the East River, weather permitting. Here, you feel as though you are truly in a local residential pocket neighborhood of Manhattan.

What should be on every visitor’s “bucket list” when visiting?

A: 1) If one has never visited NYC before and it is their first time, I would highly suggest seeing a classic Broadway Show that is so iconic to NYC. 2)

Additionally, a Boat Cruise around the Statue of Liberty, walking along the Brooklyn promenade from across the East River to take in the spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline from afar both day and night. 3)

Visit a historic, famous NYC Deli to experience a real authentic “Corned Beef” or “Pastrami Sandwich on Rye.” 4)A Walk on the High Line: The former elevated Railway transformed into a modern sculpture garden while passing through areas known as Hudson Yards, Chelsea and the Meatpacking District.

What’s an excellent spot to capture a great selfie?

A: Washington Street in Brooklyn is one of the most Instagrammable photo opportunities in NYC. Located in DUMBO between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge, one has a backdrop of a charming street and the bridge crossing the river together with the Manhattan skyline in the distance. There is a certain time of the day close to sunset when it is truly spectacular.

Broadway Guide Insider:

city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Carly Sakolove, who stars as Rosie in MAMMA MIA! about her favorite places in New York City.

being a pillar of support for Donna when all hell breaks loose!

Described as a “total clown,” Rosie is unabashedly herself at all times, using humor to both cheer up her friends and diffuse awkward situations and to disguise any insecurity she has (mainly when it comes to her new “friendship” with Bill Austin). I see so much of myself in Rosie, and playing her night after night is a total delight. Being a clown is a specialty of mine, as is being a good friend

How would you describe MAMMA MIA! to someone completely unfamiliar with Broadway?

Sakolove: This show is such a great segway for people who aren’t selfdescribed “Theater People.” Picture the entire ABBA Hit Songbook,

place it on a Greek Island with a semiShakespearean plot, pepper in high-energy choreography, gorgeous lighting, and brightly colored spandex, and you have MAMMA MIA!

What do you love most about MAMMA MIA!?

Sakolove: I love the joy that this show exudes. With songs that already produce such feelings of nostalgia for our audiences, and characters that are so easy to identify with, people leave the theatre feeling happy. It doesn’t hurt that it ends with a 70’s‘70sstyle rock concert where everyone in the crowd is singing, dancing, and holding the hands of their loved ones. It’s truly magical.

If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?

Sakolove: For a night on the town, I personally would go to Minetta Tavern for a Black Label Burger, then shoot up to Times Square for a Broadway show, and out for cocktails after at Glass House Tavern or Bar Centrale

What are the best tips you can give a visitor?

Sakolove: If you are visiting NYC, talk to locals and find out one or two places that they go, that aren’t in any guidebook. You might just have the best day of your life.

What was the one NYC lesson you learned shortly after arriving in the Big Apple?

Sakolove- Don’t assume that every black car at the train station is a taxi. You may just accidentally get into somebody’s Porsche. Oops!

Read more at govisit.guide and follow Sakolove on social media at @carlysakolove!
