Broadway Guide Insider:
Some of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Andrew Durand, who stars as Elmer McCurdy in DEAD OUTLAW, about his favorite places in New York City.
we still root for him. We want him so badly to succeed and have a peaceful life. Non-Spoiler Alert: He dies, and ends up having a very successful showbiz career as a traveling corpse.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
Durand- I did my first show at my local community theater in Roswell, GA, when I was 10 years old. I did countless shows there. When I wasn’t doing the shows, I was helping out however I could by selling concessions, painting sets, and any excuse I could find to be close to the magic of theater. I then went to an arts-focused High School and College. In my professional career, I have performed in several Broadway shows including SHUCKED, HEAD OVER HEELS, WAR HORSE, and SPRING AWAKENING. I have even more Off-Broadway shows to my name and a production in London’s West End.
What do you love most about the show you are performing in right now?
Durand- I love that this is an original musical. It is not based on a popular movie or book. It doesn’t have any movie stars in it. It has found itself on Broadway because of its merits. It is the highest quality of the art form. The music, script, direction, lighting, sets, costumes, sound, and performances are all executed by awardwinning artists at the top of their game, doing what they do best.
What was the one NYC lesson you learned shortly after arriving in the Big Apple?
Durand- The difference between a local and an express train in the Subway
What are the best tips you can give a visitor?
Durand- Explore different neighborhoods! The best thing about New York is how much variety is packed into one small place. Don’t just stay in midtown. Explore!
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC, and where is it best?
Durand- I really love Thai food. I spend most of my time in midtown because that is where I work. Luckily, there are two great Thai spots there: Lum Lum, and Chalong. I also love Thai Diner down on Mott Street, but you should make a reservation.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Durand- I always encourage people to go check out Central Park. It’s hard to believe there is a park in the middle of Manhattan that is so big you can forget you are in New York City.
