Gaffney, Chef
Q: Why do you refer your guests to The Welcome Guide®, and what makes it an important resource for you?
A: I love to get updates from The Welcome Guide®. As a concierge in a city like this one, I need to stay updated on the happenings that my guests care about. The Welcome Guide® makes it easy to get a snapshot of what's important to know.
Q. What should be on every visitor's "bucket list" when visiting?
A: At this time of year, Midtown is the place to be. Rockefeller Center's giant Christmas tree shouldn't be missed. I also love Bryant Park Winter Village for shopping and ice skating. You've got to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall at least once.
Q. What is the best suggestion you can give a first-time visitor?
A: There's no excuse for skipping Times Square. Locals often avoid it, but if it's your first time in New York, you have to see it. I've lived in New York City for over 30 years, and I still often marvel at the sheer magnitude of the place. The massive billboards, the theater marquees, and even the crowds. How can you say you've been to New York without that experience?
Q. Where's the best place to take kids of all ages?
A: Kids love the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Gardens Mercer Labs in FIDI is also an easy choice for all ages. My kids are always begging to go, and I don't mind because I love it too. It's a multi-sensory art space with many rooms and interactive activities. I suggest it all the time.
Q. What is your expert tip?
A: Plan ahead. Many of your favorite restaurants start booking 30 days in advance, so same-day reservation attempts may not cut it. But don't despair. If you're not on their books, you may be able to walk in if you go at the very start of their dinner service or at the end of the night.

It might be winter, but there’s still plenty to explore in the Big Apple. When it’s dry, traveling by foot is still a great way to get around and see the sights.

A comprehensive guide to New York City’s seasonal delights must begin with the legendary Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes. This iconic annual production is a hallmark of the season, captivating audiences with its precision choreography, stunning costumes, and spectacular sets. Visitors will be enthralled by the high-kicking precision of the worldfamous dancers, the breathtaking “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” number, and more. Seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall is a timeless, NYC holiday tradition.

featuring the company’s full roster of talented dancers, a live orchestra, and stunning visual elements. Visitors are consistently mesmerized by the famous, enormous Christmas tree that seems to grow endlessly before their eyes, the beautifully delicate Waltz of the Snowflakes.
The historic Merchants House Museum offers a unique and intimate way to experience a classic holiday story with its exceptional performance of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Far from a grandstage production, this immersive event takes place in the museum’s preserved 19th-century parlor. An actor transports the
audience back to Victorian New York, recounting the beloved tale of Ebenezer Scrooge against the backdrop of an authentic, candlelit drawing room. This provides a charmingly atmospheric and unforgettable holiday experience that connects travelers with the city’s literary traditions.
One of the most cherished New York holiday traditions is the New York City Ballet’s performance of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, set to Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score. This celebrated production transports the audience to a dreamlike Land of Sweets,
For a dazzling, modern spectacle of holiday lights, a visit to Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West Side is an absolute must. The annual installation, known as Shine Bright, transforms with an extravagant display of over two million glittering lights. As you walk through the Public Square and Gardens, you are immersed in a glowing landscape created by hundreds of illuminated evergreen trees. Inside The Shops and Restaurants, the centerpiece is an incredible sight: a massive, lightstrung hot air balloon suspended in the soaring atrium.
For a distinctly New York holiday experience that blends festive spirit with architectural drama, head downtown to Brookfield Place. The spectacular glass-enclosed Winter Garden is transformed into a seasonal escape, with towering palm trees, dazzling decorations, and panoramic waterfront views. The venue hosts an array of free cultural events, including a beloved presentation of Keith Michael’s The Nutcracker by the New York Theatre Ballet and the Holiday Harmonies lunchtime concert series featuring talented musicians.
The Shops at Columbus Circle hosts one of Manhattan’s most spectacular indoor light displays, known as Holiday Under the Stars. This annual installation features forty-four enormous, illuminated stars suspended from the atrium’s ceiling, creating a dazzling spectacle set against the backdrop of Central Park. The stars, which feature over 300,000 twinkling lights, are choreographed to change colors and ‘dance’ to holiday music every half hour from evening until midnight.
We know we highlighted this spectacular event last month. Still, we would be remiss not to mention the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show once more, as it remains one of the city’s most cherished seasonal traditions. This daytime exhibition transports guests into a magical miniature world where G-scale model trains journey through a whimsical cityscape of beloved New York landmarks, each painstakingly crafted from natural, plant-based materials such as bark, seeds, and leaves. For an elevated after-dark experience, be sure to
reserve tickets for Holiday Train Nights. During these special evening celebrations, the Conservatory glows with festive lighting, offering an illuminated display complemented by seasonal drinks, music, and a distinctly adult atmosphere—the perfect holiday outing for any New Yorker or visitor.
The Museum of Ice Cream brings a vibrant, delightfully festive twist to the season with its annual celebration, Pinkmas. This limitedtime experience transforms the museum’s already colorful installations into a winter wonderland soaked in signature pink hues. Visitors can explore the sprinkle pool, enjoy holiday-themed ice cream treats, and interact with installations, all while surrounded by playful seasonal décor, including pink tinsel, frosted trees, and unique photo opportunities. Pinkmas offers a uniquely cheerful, interactive holiday event perfect for travelers seeking a memorable, sugar-filled diversion from traditional red-andgreen décor.
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden hosts the highly anticipated Lightscape, an immersive evening exhibition that transforms the garden's grounds into a winter fantasy. Visitors follow a specially crafted, mile-long trail illuminated by over a million festive lights and artistic light installations. This multi-

sensory experience emphasizes the natural beauty of the garden in the colder months, featuring vibrant colors projected onto towering trees, fire garden installations, and a dramatic light tunnel, all synchronized to a cheerful holiday soundtrack. Lightscape offers a visually spectacular and memorable outdoor holiday activity for both families and couples seeking a unique seasonal outing in Brooklyn.

The Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights spectacle is one of New York City’s premier family-focused holiday traditions, transforming the park’s grounds with millions of lights and hundreds of intricately designed illuminated animal lanterns. The walk-through experience is spread across multiple trails, each representing different geographic regions and featuring wildlife from around the globe, connecting visitors to conservation efforts. Beyond the glowing animal displays and towering holiday tree, the event offers a whole festive evening with interactive experiences, including snow tube slides in the new “Freeze Zone,” mesmerizing ice-carving demonstrations, puppet shows, and plenty of seasonal treats.

A holiday weekend in New York City is an immersive, high-energy experience defined by the dense concentration of seasonal spectacles. From the intricately decorated hotels and dazzling light displays to the holiday popup bars, ice skating, and tree lightings, there isn’t a single dull moment to be had on a holiday weekend in the Big Apple.
Mariah Carey’s Holiday Bar is a highly immersive, over-the-top Christmas pop-up that transforms the space within the Untitled Hotel in New York City into a dazzling, festive oasis, which the “Queen of Christmas” personally curates. Returning and expanding nationally this season, the experience is a glamorous celebration of her holiday legacy, featuring wall-to-wall sparkling décor, themed photo opportunities like Santa’s Sleigh and album backdrop recreations, and exclusive cocktails made with her Black Irish cream liqueur. The experience is designed as a joyful, fun, and highly photogenic tribute, complete with a “Letters to Mariah” station and non-stop plays of her classic holiday hits like “All I Want for Christmas is You.”
Santa’s Winter Wonderland transforms the Watermark venue at Pier 15 in the Seaport District into a spectacular waterfront holiday destination. This whimsical experience features extensive illuminated décor, dozens of Christmas trees, and a variety of festive activities suitable for all ages, including photo opportunities with Santa and a carousel ride. Guests can choose general admission for an outdoor experience with hot cocoa, or they may reserve one of the magical, heated glasshouses or chalets for dining and drinks while enjoying panoramic views of the Brooklyn skyline and bridges. The venue often hosts special events, such as weekend brunches with Santa, making it a cheerful New York holiday outing.
Omni Hotels & Resorts welcomes the holiday season by transforming its locations, including the New York City property, into festive havens, highlighted by the return of the popular Blitzen’s Bar pop-up. Starting late November, this highly decorated bar offers a fresh, innovative menu of cocktails and non-alcoholic options curated by globally recognized mixologist Julie Reiner, featuring playful drinks like the ornament-served The Blitzen and the elegant Espress-Ho Ho Martini. The New York location shares in this sophisticated celebration, inviting guests to enjoy creative mixology and a festive atmosphere.

New York City truly earns its title as the epicenter of winter festivities through its abundance of annual tree lighting ceremonies, transforming the city’s most famous landmarks into dazzling spectacles throughout December. While the legendary Rockefeller Center tree lighting on December 3 commands the most attention, the holiday cheer extends across the boroughs. The Financial District kicks off with the NYSE Tree Lighting (December 4) and the festive Seaport Tree Lighting (December 2). Public parks glow with the Bryant Park Tree Lighting (December 2), the Madison Square Park ceremony (December 9), and the traditional caroling under the Arch at Washington Square Park (December 11). Further enhancing the city’s glamour is the solemn lighting of the trees along Park Avenue (December 7) and the festive display at the Central Park Holiday Lighting (December 4).

For a quintessential winter experience in New York City, ice skating is a beloved holiday activity, with beautiful rinks set against iconic city backdrops. The most famous rinks create a distinct ambiance for travelers. Wollman Rink in Central Park provides an expansive sheet of ice, surrounded by the park’s picturesque natural beauty and the towering skyline, offering a classic, cinematic experience. Meanwhile, the rink at Rockefeller Center delivers glamour and excitement, positioned directly beneath the famous Christmas tree and the stunning light show, making it a bucket-list destination. Finally, the Bryant Park Winter Village features a popular, free-admission ice rink surrounded by European-style holiday market stalls, allowing visitors to skate and shop in one festive location.
The Peninsula New York establishes itself as a premier destination for elegant holiday celebrations in Manhattan, blending sophisticated style with warm seasonal hospitality. The luxury hotel, situated on Fifth Avenue, captivates guests with opulent yet tasteful décor, a festive calendar of events, and bespoke services, including the popular New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Afternoon Tea and the whimsical Peninsula Sweet Shoppe. The celebration culminates on the rooftop with the New Year’s Eve Rooftop Party at Pen Top, which offers exclusive dining, entertainment, and panoramic views of the city, completing the hotel’s identity as a cherished New York holiday retreat.
The Plaza Hotel stands as a legendary New York City landmark, offering a truly iconic holiday experience where the grandeur of Fifth Avenue meets the festive calm of Central Park. The historic hotel celebrates the season with elegant flair, featuring a “Suitest Season of All” package that includes in-room holiday trees and elaborate dining options, such as the traditional Holiday Afternoon Tea in The Palm Court. For fans of classic holiday cinema, The Plaza honors its role in the beloved movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York with a special-themed package, allowing guests to relive the adventure of staying at this magnificent hotel during the holidays, complete with festive amenities that capture the film’s spirit.
The Lotte New York Palace, located near St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center, transforms its iconic courtyard during the holiday season, hosting one of the city’s most elegant and frequently photographed Christmas trees. While the tree’s height may not rival its Rockefeller counterpart, its intimate setting amidst the historic Villard Mansion and glamorous hotel architecture provides a highly photogenic backdrop that attracts visitors seeking a sophisticated photo opportunity. Guests can enjoy the glittering spectacle in the Courtyard while savoring seasonal treats and decadent hot chocolate from the Winter Bar, cementing the Palace’s status as a quintessential holiday stop in Midtown Manhattan.

Broadway Guide Insider:

notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Kate Baldwin, who stars as Roxie Hart in CHICAGO, about her favorite places in NYC.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
Baldwin- When I moved to New York, my first job was in the ensemble of a musical called Babes in Arms at City Center. Since then, I’ve been nominated twice for the Tony Award (once for Hello Dolly in 2017 and once for Finian’s Rainbow in 2010). I also starred on Broadway in Big Fish, Wonderful Town, Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Full Monty
How would you describe your show to someone completely unfamiliar with Broadway?
Baldwin- It is sexy, funny and pure showbiz. I might even call it a perfect musical.
What do you love most about the show you are performing in right now?
Baldwin- I love the witty songs and iconic choreography most of all.
What was the one NYC lesson you learned shortly after arriving in the Big Apple?
Baldwin- Wear good walking shoes, have a functional bag and be aware of the flow of foot traffic.
What are the best tips you can give a visitor?
Baldwin- New Yorkers are kind and love their city. If you ask for suggestions or directions, they will be happy to help. Just don’t slow them down or clog the sidewalk!
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC, and where is it best?
Baldwin- The Gramercy Tavern’s tasting menu is seasonal and delicious.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Baldwin- MoMA, The Plaza for tea, 54 Below, Breads Bakery, Murray’s Cheese Shop, Museum of Math, Don Antonio for pizza, Bar Centrale
If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
Baldwin- The Up & Up cocktail bar in the West Village is my favorite place for my drink, called Promise of Adulthood.
What do you love best about New York City?
Baldwin- The energy!

If you’re in the mood for steak, Mastro’s Steakhouse and Nusr-Et Steakhouse are both right around the corner.
The activities are endless at Rockefeller Center. While you can always take in the stunning panoramic views at Top of the Rock, the holiday season is even more stunning. The world-famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is lit and ready, and with it comes one of the world’s most photographed ice skating rinks. Make sure to check online for a list of all the fun holiday events you can enjoy this season, like live perfor- mances, fun seasonal vendors, and so much more. Just around the corner, you’ll find Radio City Music Hall, home of the Rockettes and the Christmas Spectacular. It’s a holiday classic you won’t want to miss!
If you’re looking to do some shopping, you’re in the right place! Some of the best places to check off everyone on your Christmas list can be found right around the block. You’ll find Nintendo, American Girl Place, The Lego Store, and the iconic FAO Schwarz for the little (or big) kids. If you’re looking for designer digs, Fifth Avenue has some of the best choices and a number of fantastic department stores (withsome of the most gorgeous window displays).
