We are having a great year at Webb! There is much to share with you, and so little space from my editor! The accomplishments of our students have been varied - two National Merit Semifinalists, a new cheerleading squad, and The Webb Players performed “GODSPELL.” Field Studies exposed all students to new experiences and ideas, Advanced Placement results were excellent for the second straight year, and art students made bowls for “The Empty Bowls Project.” Author Ruta Sepetys enthralled our students with her book presentation, the girls’ cross country team won the John Freeman Invitational, while the boys placed second, and we had a successful Alumni Honor Council weekend. The list goes on and on. All of these accomplishments can be seen on our website. Please visit often! Most recently, our eight-man football program finished the regular season 11-0, and then went on to win the Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference championship and place second in the National Association of Christian Athletes Tournament. Coach David Forrest started the program three years ago and has transformed a group of inexperienced boys into a football powerhouse! Congratulations to the 40 players, the coaches, and all involved with this successful season. It has been exciting to watch the construction of the ScienceMath Building. The brick exterior work is almost finished, and the building will be enclosed soon. We hope to occupy the classrooms in February and dedicate the building in April during Alumni Weekend. Three new labs and two new classrooms will greatly enhance the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). A focus for faculty this year is to develop stronger writing across the curriculum. Webb’s emphasis on communication (written and spoken), what we call our “Emerging Voices Program,” continues to produce young men and women who speak with confidence, and write with persuasion. This issue of the Webb Magazine is focused on archives. Webb’s history and traditions encompass almost 150 years! We continue to find and receive wonderful remembrances. Each treasure reveals the human elements of relationships from Webb’s rich past, and we grow as a school through these memories. A significant find this fall was the “Culleoka Bell” that is featured in this issue. Also in this issue is The Webb School Annual Report. I want to thank all of you who have made a difference by supporting Webb in this past year. Our record-breaking Webb Fund total last year enabled us to not only maintain our existing programming, but to add and to improve in many areas of the school. I am deeply grateful for your gifts to the school, as they help us “to improve a little every day.” Ray Broadhead Head of School

NY Times best-selling author is first 20132014 Follin speaker Webb hosted New York Times best-selling author, Ruta Sepetys, as the year's first guest in the Follin Speaker Series, an endowed program. Sepetys discussed what led her to become an author of historical fiction after a 22-year career in the music industry. The author focused on Between Shades of Gray, a New York Times bestseller. Inspired by the story of her father’s escape from Lithuania when he was a child, Sepetys described her detailed research and the real-life characters who told her their stories. She also discussed her writing process and the first experience with the publishing industry. Out of the Easy is her second novel. She notes on her website that the novel “combines my love for New Orleans, historical scandal, and the idea that we are most perfect in our imperfection.”

Class of 2014 receives blazers, rings in new tradition Seniors in the Class of 2014 participated in Blazer Day, Nov. 12, one of many traditions, as they received their senior blazers in a special chapel ceremony. The presentation is scheduled annually on or near the birthday of founder, W. R. “Sawney” Webb, who was born on Nov. 11, 1842. Marking the Blazer Day ceremony, Jennings Jones ’90 of Murfreesboro, an assistant district attorney

for the State of Tennessee for the past 15 years, was the keynote speaker. As seniors continued the longtime tradition, the class members added something new following the ceremony. They each had the opportunity to ring the bell that once stood at the original school in Culleoka, Tenn., where Sawney Webb and brother, John Webb, began their classes. The Ransom Jones, Sr. family of Murfreesboro recently gave the bell as a gift to Webb. It has been placed on a brick pedestal adjacent to Sawney’s Garden and the Administration Building. The bell was purchased from collector Milner Carden of Tullahoma, Tenn., who bought it 50 years ago and had it displayed at his home. Each year, alumni board members of the school traditionally present the blazers during a school-wide chapel service. This year, Julie Harris ’95, director of admissions, George Huddleston ‘76, and Jennifer Rupley Smith ‘93, both members of the alumni board, participated. Parents, underclassmen, faculty, staff and guests attended the event.

New Chambliss seminar provides intensive leadership study at Webb Thirteen students are spending the school year in intensive study of leadership in a new program, Chambliss Leads. The 10th12th grade residents of the Chambliss Dormitory are researching leaders, examining leadership styles, profiling their personal leadership qualities and characteristics, exploring peer review and peer coaching, and completing group leadership development projects. A joint Chambliss-alumni service project will complete the program.

"Chambliss Leads, though rigorous and tough, is certainly a great building experience,” said Chris Lapid. “It’s teaching me the importance of being able to efficiently manage myself, my time, and my work.” He added, “The brain, an edge --- Chambliss Leads, the grindstone.”

During Webb's 11-0 regular season, the team scored 572 points, and held opponents to 71 points.

"I was very fortunate to start with a good group of sophomores -- now seniors -- who stayed together and gained experience. We added a couple of other seniors this year, everybody bought into the program, and it paid off." Forrest added that freshmen, who started with the program, are now juniors and continue to gain experience. The team has made up for "taking some hard knocks" during the first year of the program, he said. Forrest thanked the administration, faculty, staff, students and cheerleaders for the support shown the football program.

Two very different paths will lead Wilson to her goals There are two very diverse paths that Shelby Wilson '14 of McMinnville walks each week -- the brick sidewalks that take her to classes and the fashion runways that are taking her to a career as a full-time model. Wilson was raised in several places around the world, including Italy and South Korea, and the family returned to Middle Tennessee six years ago to be near extended family. Her father, Lt. Col.(R) Mitch Wilson, is from McMinnville, and her mother, Gina Wilson, has relatives in Smyrna. Through the years, she and her brother, Levi '16, had visited the area.

She began modeling after signing with DAN Talent Group, Brentwood, Tenn., in August 2012. Her first runway job was "A Foreign Fashion Affair" for Manuel Exclusive Clothier in Nashville. "It was a lot of fun. I didn't realize how intense it was." Other assignments followed including work with Designs by Max, Jeff Garner, LollyDee

After less than a year of modeling, she appeared in The New York Times Fashions and Styles as part of Adrian Morales' "Street Style: Tie Dye" on Oct. 7, 2013. "I still can't believe that's me," she said, "doing what I love." Wilson and other models have become friends. They understand the work, long hours for shoots, misconceptions about models and getting high school homework completed on time. Her family also has been very supportive even if her brother still jokes and "tells me this isn't a real job." There are agencies in New York and Los Angeles that would sign her full-time now, but prefer she finish high school. That fits in with Shelby's plans. She wants to graduate from Webb and earn a college degree.

Fall - Winter 2013 - 2014

Both Shelby and Levi chose Webb to complete their high school education. "When I came to Webb, I just knew this is where I was supposed to be," she said. Having lived abroad, Shelby said, the cultural diversity at Webb was appealing. The school's emphasis on honesty and character also meshed with her background being part of a military family.

and Jose Braulio. She's also done commercial print and mannequin modeling. Part of her work has been at charitable events, something she wants to continue to do. The new model has gained industry attention for her walk and has taught a runway class because of that distinction.

Smiths committed to Webb, have maintained vibrant teaching styles "The thing that I have enjoyed most about Webb is the professional freedom I've been given. I have cherished the school's trust that allows me to pursue my own teaching style." --- L.R. Smith L.R.’s and Moira’s time at Webb is not simply measured in terms of how they have made History and French come alive for their students. The fact that they've been on this journey together has made their relationships special — with the school and with each other. "Ours is a simple story of how each of us came to Bell Buckle to interview at Webb, got hired by Mr. (Jack) Heffner, and then set to work," Moira said. Moira was finishing a master's degree after working in France when her dad (retired to this area from the Air Force) suggested she apply to teach at Webb. L.R., from North Carolina like W. R. “Sawney” Webb, graduated from The Asheville School, Guilford College and received a master's degree from University of North Carolina-Greensboro before moving for the only time as an adult to Bell Buckle to accept a history position. "It is interesting to me to hear from L.R. the good and great impact that Mr. Heffner had on him as he did on me, plus the encouragement to begin our teaching careers by working hard to inspire young learners," Moira remarked. The pair actually taught a course together early in their careers. It was a semester course in World War I history and literature. By the end of the semester, Moira had finished the literature part, and L.R. had only made it through two years of the four-year war. But he had them hooked, and many of the students elected to go on with him for the "rest of the story."

The couple related how it was L.R.'s interest in French World War I military history, and the start of what is now a considerable military collection, that gave them many common points along the way. There's also the tale about their being married on Waterloo Day and then being

on the Waterloo battlefield in Belgium two days later. L.R. and Moira have made history and French living experiences by leading Webb students on travel-study trips in several countries, but mainly different regions of France. "One of the neat things about taking the students to France is getting them to see and hear history with L.R., especially when he channels Sgt. Alvin York in the Argonne Forest," Moira said. On their last trip, they got to see the document that tells the story of the Norman Conquest, when William of Normandy became King of England. This long tapestry dates from 1080. The group also visited the D-Day beaches, museum, and cemetery on the coast. Moira weaves French cuisine into her lesson plans occasionally, knowing that to gain a full sense of the French language a person has to also taste it. Her current French Club is about cinema and crêpes, two of the students' big interests with French culture. The couple's daughter, Caroline '11, grew up at the Webb School. "She was raised bilingual from the word go," said L.R., who added that she accompanied her parents on school travel-study trips. Caroline is a French, Arabic and International Studies major at Davidson and will spend the spring semester studying in France. "The real joy about teaching at Webb is that how we bring the lesson to life absorbs our students' attention, like when a French IV student gives a "live report" on what chef Paul Bocuse is doing, or what famous French movie star we might "see" at the Bell Buckle café,” said Moira. “L.R.'s history students get caught up with the fascination history can be when learned from someone whose extensive knowledge makes it compelling for them as well."

Fall - Winter 2013 - 2014

At Heffner's suggestion, L.R. became chapel director and was involved in administrative and discipline matters for many years. He also served as Honor Council sponsor for more than 30 years and currently serves as Trap and Skeet Program sponsor, a program he started in the 1980s.

"There’s nothing in the world I’d rather do than to go up that hill every day and teach French at The Webb School, and to take Webb students to France." --- Moira Smith

History lives at Webb

You’ve seen it in dozens of movies – a person comes across a long-lost relative’s name in an old newspaper clipping, census, military record or school roll book. It’s a treasured find, and the person is caught up in the moment. That same scene plays out numerous times throughout the year as alumni, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends come to campus in search of some piece of their personal history with Webb.

The Webb School Magazine

Webb’s history and those who lived it are celebrated every day in a myriad of ways. Classes are taught in the Jr. Room, a fully restored schoolhouse from the 1800s. Students regularly cite the school motto and the mission statement and still sign an honor pledge book. The names of early benefactors are proudly reflected in awards and scholarships.

12

The Bond Library, under the direction of Hannah Little, along with Susan Howell, cataloger/ archivist, and Ann Chandler, circulation assistant, serves as the official repository of Webb’s archives – an extensive collection of historical documents, photographs and other memorabilia – some pieces dating to the late 1800s. We invite you to visit campus and the library archives to reminisce, to research and most of all to enjoy your connection to Webb.

Howell named school archivist Susan Coop Howell, Webb’s library cataloger for nearly 20 years, recently was named school archivist and has her own family ties to Webb. Her grandmother and aunt were Webb staff members, and she discovered that her grandfather attended Webb. Howell recently completed the American Association of State and Local History "Basics of Archives" online course and will continue professional development. “I love seeing the old photographs from the late 1800s, correspondence between Webb family members, and original documents, such as those from Culleoka,” said Howell. “New facts are uncovered almost every day, so I'm constantly learning something new.” Upcoming archival projects include: Organizing The "Son Will" Collection, having interchangeable exhibits of archival items in the library, improving storage for current archival items, cataloging and digitizing archival items, converting media to current formats, continuing to update the Webb Family Tree on Ancestry. com, working on Exhibit 2020, Webb’s sesquicentennial project, and co-authoring a book about The Webb School with library director, Hannah Little, through Arcadia Press.

Master roll book popular piece of Webb's history

The Webb School Magazine

Dorothy Elkins, who joined the Webb staff in 1957, has been recording the names and other information about graduates in each class since 1960. She took over the task of handwriting the names in a large ledger book from Sybil Steiner, who began the record with the Class of 1955.

14

Elkins said the “master roll book” was a good way to maintain records of the students, their parents’ names, where they went to college and, in later years, their activities, awards and honors. “At that time, there was no technology to do it any other way,” Elkins said. And, it served as a quick reference resource when information about students was needed. Through the years, it has also been a popular piece of Webb’s history as visitors to campus often want to look for a relative’s name in the book.

Dick Webb, of North Carolina, whose great-grandfather was a brother of “Sawney” Webb’s, visited campus in June 2013 with his wife, Betsy. Susan Howell, right, Webb archivist, shows exhibit documents and photographs to the Webbs.

Sawney’s last living grandchild is proud of family’s history Margaret Reagan was three years old when her grandfather, W.R. “Sawney” Webb, died in 1926. She readily admits she has no personal memories of him, but adds that strong family bonds, numerous reunions in many parts of the country and countless stories have given her a vivid picture of her grandfather. She can recount the stories told her by relatives through the years – some of the same stories that Laurence McMillin reflected in his 1972 book “The Schoolmaker: Sawney Webb and the Bell Buckle Story." “I really don’t have a memory of him except for pictures and stories,” she said. Margaret, who resides in Savannah, Ga., is the last surviving of Sawney Webb’s 16 grandchildren. She celebrated her 90th birthday on Sept. 25. Her cousins included Emma and Sawney Ben Webb; Lois, Peyton and Joseph Sibley; Ed

and Emily Price; Suzanne McLean; and Tom, Howell, Bill and Jack Webb. “We’ve always been a close family and had many reunions. I knew my cousins well,” she said. Margaret and her older brothers, William Robert Webb III ‘37 (founder of the Webb School in Knoxville) and George McCulley Webb ‘38, were the children of Daniel Clary Webb (Class of 1899), the fifth of Sawney and Emma Clary Webb’s eight children. Their mother was Daniel Clary Webb’s second wife, Julia McCulley. From her father’s first marriage to Maud Lindsey, who died in childbirth, Margaret had a half-brother, Daniel Clary Webb Jr. Daniel Clary Webb Sr. was a lawyer and later a Juvenile Court Judge in Knox County, Tenn., where Margaret and her brothers grew up. The family often traveled to Bell Buckle to visit her uncle and aunt, Will and Louise Webb. They also made several visits to California to visit her uncle and aunt, Thompson Webb and family in Claremont, where he had founded The Webb School. One California visit coincided with a visit by her uncle Will Webb, who flew there to deliver the Claremont commencement speech. “Family reunions have been in Claremont, Bell Buckle and Knoxville. We were interested in going to each one of the Webb Schools,” she said. “The last reunion was in North Carolina. We went to see where Sawney Webb was born and other places of family interest. I’m proud of the family history. It’s very precious to me.” She still finds the stories of her grandfather’s life fascinating. “He set the standard in education. He had so many theories of how to teach children … not keep them in a room sitting at a desk. He was apparently so perceptive about character that he could size up a boy, what he needed and how to handle him – and he was very successful. He tried hard to see them all educated in an individual way.”

The Reagan’s three children include: Chip Reagan (deceased), Judy Huckaby (Rod) of Knoxville, and Bobby Reagan (Beth) of Atlanta. She has six grandsons.

Webb's 2013 Summer Program attracted 123 participants for the day camp, SAT prep courses and basketball and soccer skills camps. Rising 4th-8th graders attended one or two weeks of day camp focusing on robotics, science, technology, art, writing, Chinese and outdoor skills. The SAT English and math prep courses were well attended by 9th-12th graders, and the basketball and soccer skills camps drew athletes in 2nd-12th grades. Summer Program 2014 will include an expanded day camp in one- to two-week sessions offered on June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, and June 30-July 3. The SAT English and math prep courses and the basketball and soccer skills camps also will be offered again in 2014. New to the program will be the Intensive English Summer Institute 2014, a four-week English language summer program for students ages 14-18. The program, June 29-July 25, offers the study of academic English while experiencing American culture and adventure on Webb's scenic campus, as well as in Nashville and the surrounding area. Board approves new in-state and contiguous-state tuition rate By Julie Harris ‘95, Director of Admissions Last April, the Board of Trustees voted to phase out our fiveday boarding program and replace it with a new Tennessee and contiguous states boarding tuition rate. The tuition rate, which is roughly 20 percent lower than the seven-day boarding rate, will be extended to families who live in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

relationships within the residential life program,” said James Garcia, dean of students.

“In recent years there has been tremendous economic growth in Tennessee and surrounding states. Our goal in making this change was to pursue that market while realizing that we will be attracting students who will go home more frequently than distant boarders and therefore allow the school to pass the commensurate savings on to those families,” said Glenn Jones ’76, Trustee and Tuition Subcommittee chair.

The Webb School remains committed to providing students with the best education possible at an affordable cost. “We work hard to balance our commitment to keep costs down with our responsibility to continually improve the quality of our campus, curriculum, and overall educational experience for our students,” said Ray Broadhead, Head of School.

The Webb School magazine

In addition to attracting new families in the southeast region, the tuition rate helps support our weekend residential program. Our campus is very busy on the weekends, and students enjoy many varied activities. This new tuition rate will allow these students to stay on campus during weekends without being charged while still having the option of going home on the weekends at any time. “I think it is wonderful that Webb is transitioning to the contiguousstate tuition. It gives our students the opportunity to participate in what Webb offers on the weekends and to further develop strong

16

Financial assistance is also available to help families meet these tuition costs. This year we awarded $1,566,233 in financial aid or scholarships. Approximately 46% of Webb students in the 20132014 school year are receiving scholarships or financial aid.

We would like to remind our alumni that Webb also offers Legacy Scholarships for boarding students. Children whose parents, aunts, uncles, great-aunts or great-uncles, grandparents or greatgrandparents attended The Webb School are eligible to apply for $5,000-$10,000 Legacy Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded each year the student attends The Webb School. There are currently 36 Legacy Students enrolled at The Webb School. For more information about the new tuition rate or scholarship opportunities at The Webb School, contact Julie Harris, Director of Admissions, at 931-389-6003 or jharris@webbschool.com.

Competitive sports are complement to strong academics By Matt Wilson, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations Webb is coming off of one of its most successful seasons with the football team winning its first MTAC (Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference) Championship in just its third year of competition. Combined with the championship in boys’ lacrosse in 2011-12, Webb Athletics has grown under Ray Broadhead, head of school, and Scott Dorsett, athletics director. “Competitive sports are a wonderful complement to a strong academic program,” said Broadhead. “In team sports, the emphasis on collaboration promotes a bonding that is difficult to replicate in a classroom. In any sport, the notion of competition often forces a student to learn more about his or her physical limits through perseverance. The bonding with schoolmates through sports is often one of the most memorable experiences of a student's middle and secondary school years.” “I am excited about the level of enthusiasm for athletics,” said Dorsett. He noted that interest has grown over the past few years, and that he has always been very impressed with the students who attend the school. “The facilities and infrastructure were already there,” said Dorsett, who was attracted by the opportunity to help build the program. Today, he added, “… our kids feel like they can compete. I am so proud of the football team, because they (class of 2014) started Webb football, and no one else can say that. They put the icing on the cake with this year … they showed a lot of heart.”

The Webb Foot Mascot 2013

Many people who come back to campus remark positively about the new additions to the athletic facilities. Several improvements that have been made include lighting for Lagler Field. A new pressbox, scoreboard, bleachers, goal posts, and grass treatments have also helped to make Lagler Field a top place for soccer, lacrosse and football. The Frank G. Barton, Jr. Athletic Center has received updates, including a new sound system and a newly painted floor. Last, the weight room used by all members of the Webb community was refurbished during the summer. Thanks to the Class of 2013, a symbol of Webb athletics has just been reintroduced: The Webb Foot mascot. Originally sketched and painted by Casey Jones ’74, the mascot design was adopted by students in the 1970s--representative of a competitive, yet tonguein-cheek attitude. The Class of 2013 liked the design and decided to make a full-size mascot costume its “senior class gift” to be worn at football and basketball games. Looking towards the future, Broadhead noted, “This particular senior class has many strong athletes who play two sports or more, and they will be sorely missed next year. I hope that we can continue to attract studentathletes who see the value of interscholastic athletics as part of their middle school and secondary education. While championships are wonderful, the experiences of athletics can be just as important to a team that struggles. If we can field competitive teams, if our students can learn the effort that it takes to be successful, and if we can continue to find coaches who are passionate, we will be proud of our athletic program.”

Fall - Winter 2013 - 2014

Webb currently offers 10 sports: In the fall, students have cross-country (boys and girls), football (boys), golf (boys), and soccer (girls). In the winter, both boys and girls play basketball. In the spring, opportunities for boys include baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis; girls play lacrosse, softball and tennis. “What is great about Webb athletics is that there are many offerings. It is rare

that a student gets cut from a team at Webb. It may depend on the sport, but in some sports, students who are beginners can develop, in time, into varsity players through good coaching and their own hard work,” said Broadhead.

Hardin '79

gives back to Webb as Burkhead Society member, new trustee and Webb Fund Chair Dr. William G. Hardin, III '79, father of Josephine '15, is a new member of the Board of Trustees, and the 2013-2014 Webb Fund chair. He is also the newest member of the Burkhead Society, a group of Webb alumni and friends who have made provisions for Webb in their estate plans. Hardin's family bond with Webb is strong and began when his greatuncles attended the school in the 1910s and 1920s. It has continued with his father, William G. Hardin, Jr. '52, and with his daughter, Josephine, in the class of 2015.

The Webb School Magazine

While Hardin remembers declamations, sports events, and enjoying friends, he added, "What is more memorable is being independent and responsible for getting things done. When I went to Webb, I was dropped off, and the expectation was you would be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas and perhaps a weekend if you could make that happen. The dorms had a couple of pay phones. The contrast with today is striking since we now have all the technology to keep track: phones, text, Instagram, Twitter, etc. … .”

20

His mentors included Mary Kate Murphy, Joyce Fort, Tim Graham, Marion and Virginia Marks, Sandy Truitt, Coach Imre Lagler, Dr. Lucas Boyd, and the faculty and staff in general. Then, as now, the Webb faculty and staff focused on honesty, character development, and leadership training in addition to providing rigorous academics. "Let’s face it, living in a small setting like Webb with people from all over and with many different goals and backgrounds gives us the opportunity to learn to deal with differences and conflict. People disagree, but that does not mean that we cannot in the end respect one another and acknowledge how we also have common interests."

Hardin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and planned to go to law school. Instead, he received his first graduate degree in international business from the University of South Carolina. While working in banking (international trade services and real estate lending), he decided to get a doctorate in business with a focus on real estate at Georgia State University. His first academic position was at Morehouse College. He then moved to Mississippi State as the Warren Chair of Real Estate directing the real estate and construction management programs in the College of Business and Industry. At Florida International University, Hardin is a professor of finance and real estate, and the founding director of the Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate. Throughout his career, Hardin has followed Webb's progress, served on the Alumni Board and has always given back to the school. “I give to educational programs in general and Webb, specifically. What I like about Webb is the emphasis on character, independence and education. I know many smart people, but the ones who make a difference are those who have the education to make smart decisions and are willing to try to make things happen.” Two ways that Hardin is helping this year are by serving as Webb Fund volunteer chair and by promoting the Burkhead Society. "The Burkhead Society, which is our planned giving society, is important since it allows for perhaps larger gifts and allows us to create a financial foundation for the school’s future," said Hardin. "Legacy gifts help support the school in perpetuity. They can be tax preferenced and can be residual parts of one’s estate. "The Webb Fund is vital to the operations of the school. It supports academic programs and scholarships and ties us all to the school. In short, it allows the school to invest in students and faculty," said Hardin. "Webb has a hardworking development staff, so my role is to be the alumni face of the campaign.” Hardin and his wife, Alyson, recently visited Webb. “The campus is in great shape. I also see a dedicated faculty with many great teachers who have spent years teaching our students. I am thankful for their commitment and efforts."

Dr. Collins '45 establishes The Frank Gilliland, Jr. Scholarship Dr. Robert Collins ’45 and his wife, Elizabeth, of Nashville, Tenn., honor the memory of Dr. Collins’ classmate and friend. “In 1941 Frank Gilliland and I met at Webb School as freshmen and began a lifelong friendship. Webb taught us how to think,” said Dr. Collins, a longtime professor at Vanderbilt University Medical School. “Who could forget Mr. Follin, Mr. Morgan, or Mr. Webb’s announcement, ‘Boys, you may have the day.’” Paraphrasing the alma mater, Dr. Collins said our hearts are filled with thy love indeed! “In the years to come, the Frank Gilliland Scholarship will help talented students to attend Webb and to receive a wonderful education,” said Claudia Hazelwood, Webb director of Alumni and Development. “It is truly a gift that "keeps on giving" as they graduate and go out into the world to become our leaders for tomorrow. We are very grateful for the opportunity to link his name in such a meaningful way to the school's rich history.”

Frank Gilliland Jr. ’45 graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts and from Vanderbilt Law School. He was an attorney with the firm of Merrill, Gilliland and Russell in Memphis, Tenn. He was elected to the Webb Board of Trustees of April 7, 1961, and was made a Life Trustee on April 15, 1983. He died on Jan. 11, 1984. His widow, Tandy Gilliland, resides in Greenville, S.C. Family members who attended Webb include their daughter, Carol Bradford ‘82, Lexington, Ky.; and his brothers, Robert J. Gilliland ’44 and James S. Gilliland ’51, Palm Desert, Calif.; and Memphis, Tenn.; respectively. His father, the late Frank M. Gilliland Sr., graduated in 1908; uncle, the late Walter F. Gilliland in 1900; and uncle, the late John R. Gilliland in 1920. (Editor's Note: The Webb School extends sympathy in the death of Dr. Collins on Nov. 28, 2013.)

Wayne M. Rogers Matching Scholarship now Webb’s largest endowment scholarship Wife Amy’s efforts boost total

Inaugurated through the generosity of his Webb friends, led by James S. Gilliland ’51 and Fred Singer ’51, the scholarship was first awarded in 1999. Daniel Monroy ’14, a boarding student from Arlington, Texas, is the current recipient.

In the last six months, thanks to the efforts of Rogers’ wife, Amy, $100,000 cash has been solicited and received to enhance the scholarship. A Florida land gift from Rogers recently has been sold and added to the scholarship, making it Webb’s largest endowment scholarship. “The goal is to provide a full-tuition scholarship, which requires a total of $840,000 in endowment, and this progress is very encouraging,” said Claudia Hazelwood, Webb director of alumni and development.

Fall - Winter 2013 - 2014

Wayne M. Rogers Matching Scholarship, established in 1997, is a merit award given to a boarding student. Rogers, veteran film and television actor, Broadway producer, author, investment strategist and entrepreneur, is a 1950 Webb graduate and a member of the Board of Trustees.

Honor Council members gather at Webb for homecoming Alumni attending the Honor Council Homecoming weekend at Webb in September enjoyed a special chapel speaker, tour, time spent perusing archives, and a panel discussion. They also took time to participate in a video project to capture some of their Webb and Honor Council memories and had the opportunity to visit with Webb's current Honor Council. “The Honor Council is one of Webb's most important traditions. It was natural for us (Alumni and Development Office) to organize an event to invite Honor Council members back to campus, said Claudia Hazelwood, Director of Alumni and Development.

Annual Report of Gifts and Donors

Fall - Winter 2013 - 2014

27

Letter from the Chairman, Board of Trustees Dear Webb Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank everyone in the Webb Community for your support during the past year. The Webb School continues to be strengthened by your loyalty and commitment. As a donor, you clearly understand there is something special about our Webb School that stays with us forever. This year, alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff and friends of the school provided funds that have enabled the school to make marked improvements of which I am very proud.

I invite you to celebrate with me the results of Webb’s philanthropic support: The Webb Fund received $566,383.36 in gifts from 658 donors. These gifts provide critical support to ongoing operational needs and allow Webb to enhance educational opportunities.

In recognition of the many donors who have generously supported Webb during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013), this Annual Report is included in The Webb Magazine fall/winter issue. The stories and information you will find in the magazine describe and amplify the initiatives that are supporting our progress. From academics to technology, to capital projects to overall financial stability, I know Webb is succeeding in delivering on its mission.

Your philanthropy and your belief are moving the school forward, and I hope you will enjoy reading this annual report.

Gifts were also made to the endowment, for capital projects and other specific initiatives. These special gifts, when added to The Webb Fund, totaled more than $1.6 million. Thank you!

Very sincerely yours,

George E. Pine ’68 Chairman, Board of Trustees
