I

T IS cliché, asking, “How ‘bout this weather?” but, I can’t help it. Weather.com has informed me we’ve been a good 20 degrees above average all week. As of printing, I hadn’t worn long sleeves in three days, and it’s really discouraging my ability to get into the holiday spirit. Sleigh bells, roasting chestnuts and reindeer all seem so out of place when it’s too warm outside to wear a jacket. Maybe I’m strange, but I want to be donning a knee-length pea coat and wrapping myself in a scarf before I start singing carols. Hopefully the cure to my spiritlessness will come in the form of West Chester’s Old-Fashioned Christmas. If you live in the borough I’m probably wasting your time talking about how great the event is. You’re well aware this town will be inundated the evening of Friday, December 2 for the tree-lighting ceremony, jingle elf run and Christmas parade. Of course we’ll be at those events snapping photos, enjoying the festivities and sipping some warm Applejack from a hidden flask. As always, consult our calendar on page five for other upcoming holiday events. The holiday trend continues in these pages as we’ve jumped on the coattails of the “Shop Small” campaign with our guide to holiday shopping right here in the borough on page 25. Eight local businesses have dished up great shopping ideas, and our guide will let you know what you should be buying, how much it’s going to cost and which person on your list will be ever-so excited to receive it. And, because we know the holiday season puts a kink in regular operating schedules, we’ve also assembled a chart with all the information you’ll need to navigate this town’s bars and restaurants throughout December. You can find it on page 15. The truth is there’s nowhere I’d rather be this time of year than right here in West Chester, so fingers crossed I catch the holiday bug quite soon. Hopefully this Old-Fashioned Christmas will be contagious. Dan Mathers

Finding Treasure

I

Pickin’ through Chester County, by Tara Dugan

T IS nearly winter in Chester County, and the “pickings” are not only slim but freezing, too. If you are missing your weekly yard sales, I have the perfect way to sate your appetite for McCoy pottery and Heywood Wakefield rattan – pick up a book. You heard me, pick up a book. Don’t download it or listen to it in traffic, but head over to the Chester County Library on Church Street or Chester County Book & Music Store and physically turn some pages and lose yourself in a nice, comfortable chair with your book. For an entertaining read for the yard sale crowd, I recommend Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews. It was given to me on a beach four years ago by my best friend Regina in an effort to shut me up after my own book was done and I was hot, bored and whiny. It worked, and I spent a wonderful afternoon on the sand in Cape May while my head was in Savannah. New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews is a southern lady with a literary magic wand that weaves together all the things we love about the South, together with fun details about antiques, into a murder mystery with a heavy

helping of romance on the side. Though she has written many bestsellers, Savannah Blues stands out for the way in which the author has harnessed the excitement of real-life picking and put it on the page. In the novel, picker Eloise Foley has finally gotten the chance to score an antique treasure from Beaulieu, the grand mansion she’s been after since childhood. An ill-advised sneak preview of the goods lands her at the center of a murder investigation, and it takes her finely tuned antiquing instincts to save her own hide. The details are dead-on, and yes, you will learn something about spotting a treasure. For example, here is our heroine at one of her sales: There was a whole carton of Fire-King jadeite dishes, with sectioned luncheon plates, matching coffee

mugs, cereal bowls and chop plates, enough to stock a small 1950’s diner. Another box yielded mint-condition magazines from the thirties and forties: Field and Stream, Boys’ Life, Argosy, Collier’s and Vanity Fair. The covers were original illustrations by the biggest names of the era. The Field and Streams alone would bring fifteen dollars a pop from my antiquarian book guy in Charleston. The author also knows her stuff about Yankee goods, too, and has visited Chester County Book & Music to do a signing for her book The Fixer Upper. For Mary Kay Andrews, her dream day of Pennsylvania picking begins in local barns and attics searching for yelloware bowls, Amish quilts and Ohio Art toys. While this laid-back lady is humble and professes to “just love old junk,” the artist emerges when she elaborates and says she really loves “the stories old junk can tell.” You can find those stories at Chester County Book & Music, where John can also guide you around one of the best antique sections in the country. And take heart – yard sales (like pitchers and catchers) will be back before spring.

The Dating Column

B

Diane Stopyra’s enlightened take on dating from a woman’s perspective

ILL is a handsome man – big dimples, sun-bleached hair, abs you’re tempted to poke just to see if they’re real. He’s also smart (he’s got an advanced degree in chemical engineering), funny (I laughed so hard the last time we were together, iced tea came shooting out of my nose), and manly (he once carried me for a half-mile after I sprained my ankle on a hike). It’s mind-blowing that such a catch could be unattached. Or, at least, it used to be. Then I encountered Bill’s temper — the big, bad, snap-at-any-moment kind. I first experienced the Mr Hyde to Bill’s Dr Jekyll on a fancy date in Philly, where a friendly bartender served us our drinks — Bill’s in a glass, and mine in a plastic cup. I wasn’t fazed; the bartender could probably sense my klutziness, I figured. But Bill was angry. He took the drink from my hand, slammed it onto the bar, and demanded a new cocktail for me. At first, I wrote this off as endearing: Bill was only trying to protect me, I thought, and I love a guy who will stand up for his girl. But it didn’t take long to realize that Bill’s outburst had nothing to do with me. Neither did the argument that

ensued when a stranger rested his heel on the back of my barstool. And neither did the road rage that came spewing from Bill’s mouth when a lousy driver tailgated my Jeep. A guy with a short fuse is like a ticking bomb that will blow for any arbitrary reason. It doesn’t matter if I’m not the target. When a guy flies off the handle, I’m turned off. I’ve always thought it would be nice if you could give a man a temperament test before taking him home, like the kind you give to a

dog before adopting him. Otherwise, there’s no way to tell who the hot-heads are until they snap. The last time I went to Barnaby’s with my friend Lou, usually a soft-spoken guy, I had to diffuse an argument of the what-areyou-looking-at variety. (Which is the kind of testosterone-fueled fight only men could have. At least when women stare each other down, we make snide remarks to our girlfriends about what the other is wearing and leave it at that; no need to get physical.) So before fists started flying, I jumped between the two men and started asking inane questions of Lou’s adversary. Do you like the band? Where’d you get your shirt? What is that you’re drinking? Eventually, the man got tired of me — or completely weirded out by me — and made his way out of the bar. His wife followed behind, mouthing the words “thank you” as she went. The way I see it, life’s too short to be flipped out over plastic cups and the guy who’s looking at you across the bar. And it’s too short to be saddled with a person who is. In my (mild-mannered) opinion, a hot bod will always be canceled out by a hot head.

The December Playlist DJ Romeo's must-download tracks of the month

E

LECTRONIC songs are the biggest new trend in dance floor requests, from clubs to weddings. Songs like Avicii’s “Levels” are now acceptable in the middle of a wedding reception. This only proves my theory that electronic music (and remixes) are taking over everywhere. One song that has caught my ear comes from French dancepop band, M83. You may have heard “Midnight City” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, HBO’s How to Make it in America or the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. This unique sound has already captured many listeners and will continue to climb the charts.

Check out this song and more on our playlist at thewcpress.com Song of the Month M83 - Midnight City Top Picks Kaskade feat. A Trainer’s Tips On Staying Fit

I

Christine Mooney shares her insights on staying happy and healthy

N A literal sense, the most common definition for a conduit is simply a passageway that moves water. But water itself can act as a conduit, a passageway of its own that transports anything from electricity to sound to thousands of years’ worth of explorers traveling around the world. Water is an element that renders us nearly weightless as soon as we submerge ourselves in it. And once submerged, water — and by extension, swimming — forces us to reorganize our breathing patterns and forgo, for an instance or for a full minute or more, the compound most essential to life: air. It frees us from the normal requirements of life on terra firma. This simple act of submersion serves to provide us with not only a physical sense of weightlessness but a momentary mental and emotional one as well. Or, to paraphrase the Center for Disease Control, swimming improves mood. Improves mood. A deceptively simple statement, indeed, yet put yourself in water, swim laps in it, hold your breath and immerse yourself in it, and suddenly that statement takes on greater meaning. A friend of mine,

Kelly, has started swimming regularly because of health issues that would otherwise prevent her from engaging in more jarring exercise, such as running. It provides her with a way to push forward through pain and discomfort like no other form of exercise can, and so instead of becoming discouraged with certain physical limitations, she is invigorated by the opportunities that swimming provides. In my own life, water has always had an extraordinary influence. I swam in my first meet at age six and didn’t swim my last one until twelve years later. It was only a year

or two later that I took up triathlon training, which once again put me back in the water, spending hours a week swimming laps in a nearby community pool or donning a wetsuit for long, open-water swims off the coast of Torrey Pines Beach in San Diego or in the calm waters of Falls Lake in North Carolina. Every January 1 I use frigid water as a way to welcome in the New Year. I drive out to some lake or beach or river and take part in my own personal polar bear plunge. It is certainly very stupid but also energizing in a way that can be difficult to understand. It makes me feel very alive, yet very fragile, knowing that too long in that water would kill me. I don’t let it stop me because, regardless of the type of swimming I do, I know that I’ll walk away from it with what the CDC so cleverly calls an “improved mood.” Water is an incredibly efficient conduit on its own. Not only can it carry daring people to far off, unknown places, it carries aways stress, hurt, anger and other negative things in your life. Maybe a polar bear plunge isn’t quite your cup of tea, but you can always go for a dip in the heated indoor pools at the YMCA.

Bartender Of The Month

Neil is happy to prove that Nonna’s isn’t just about great food

W

“Our top seller is wine. Period,” says Neal of what is popular at Nonna’s Adam Jones

HEN you think of Nonna’s, it’s likely that you, like the rest of us, think great Italian food first and foremost – not bar. But, Nonna’s is home to one of West Chester’s most talented bartenders. After receiving a nomination from Nonna’s owner Marissa Powell and from our own “Food Safari” writer Jeremy Malanka, we knew it was time to make him our bartender of the month. Name: Neil Age: 36 Hometown: West Chester Born and raised? Uh, yeah, born and raised here in West Chester. Have you ever left? I went out to school at Slippery Rock for a year to play baseball, but then I transferred back to West Chester University the following year. I graduated from there with a degree in marketing. How did you get into bartending? I was working in a restaurant through college, and

I kinda just fell into bartending. I could work fewer hours, make more money and finish with school sooner. Where were you working? I was out at Maddie’s Restaurant in Frazer or Malvern, whatever that is. Down off of Route 30? Yeah, that one. That’s closed now, right? Is that why you came here? No. I worked there from ’96 to 2007 and they ended up closing in 2009. Then I spent about a year out at Big Easy in Paoli, then I came here and have never left. Marissa says you’re her best bartender. Does that surprise you? I guess not. I mean, when other bartenders are coming up to you and asking you to make their drinks for them, saying, “Here, you make this better than I do,” I guess that is an indicator. What is it, in your eyes, that makes you a good bartender? Ugh. Umm. Hmm... Experience? Like, good drink knowledge? I have 15 years experience bartending, and I do it because I have a love for the job – some people just do it for the money.

Since Nonna’s is primarily a restaurant, what percentage of patrons just come for the food? I’m not sure. I would guess it was something like 60%. Maybe 65. On the other hand, we do have a pretty significant crowd of happy hour regulars. What does the happy hour crowd drink here? Our top seller is wine. Period. Then martinis and an occassional beer. How about your pre-dinner drinkers. What are they usually having? I would say that crowd is split a little more 50-50 between the wine and the cocktails. How many wines to you have by the bottle? We always have around 75 wines available by the bottle. Do people frequently eat at the bar? Yeah. I guess. It’s not uncommon for people to order full meals while they sit here, but we serve a lot of food to the happy hour crowd because it is half off appetizers? If you’re not here, where are you drinking? I would say you could find me at Barnaby’s, Side Bar or over at Pietro’s Prime.

The Craft Cocktail Crawl

Jeremy Malanka sets out to sameple five cocktails and ends up with a whole lot more

Dan Mathers and Jeremy Malanka kick off their bar crawl (done purely for scientific purposes) with fishbowls at Doc Magrogan’s Adam Jones

E

MBARKING on a bar crawl the weekend after Thanksgiving may seem like overkill. On the other hand with a week of pure gluttony already behind me, finding room for delicious cocktails should be easy. With two feet forward and my liver quivering in the corner I bravely took the challenge of five bars and five craft cocktails in one afternoon. [Editor’s Note: This is the point where we should say something about, “Don’t try this at home,” or more likely, “Don’t attempt to recreate the acts you are about to read here.” The WC does not encourage binge drinking, and writer Jeremy Malanka was under sober supervision throughout the course of his endeavor. Okay, now you can enjoy reading about him making a fool of himself.]

drinking before 5pm since I was 21. So, I guess it was fitting that we started with fishbowls, since they too were something I enjoyed thoroughly back when I was 21. The bartender, Jenna, quickly built an Orange Crush, Sex on the Beach and a Blue Hawaiian. I enjoyed all three, but the beverage that stood out was the Sex on the Beach, or SOB. It’s loaded with vodka and then cloaked with pineapple, cranberry, and fresh OJ to disguise the booze. It is vital that the drink be as sweet as it is, because it’s hiding a whole lot of booze inside. We joked and laughed about stories of first time bar experiences, and Dan insisted I finish all 28 ounces before we could complete the pregame and move on. I had a slight buzz, and a giant smile.

2:14pm – Doc Magrogan’s I met editor Dan Mathers and photographer Adam Jones as they unloaded camera equipment on Gay Street. My excitement to start with the first sip was slightly stifled by just how early it was – I have not started

2:45pm – Pietro’s Prime My spirits were high as we left for Pietro’s. Walking down Gay Street, I laughed at the condition I was already in from that one massive drink – it was effective. The brick wall beside me as well as the sidewalk beneath my feet

were leaning just a bit as we arrived at the West Market martini bar. After meeting Dan’s wife Tanya and The WC’s assistant editor Jon Roth, I watched as Mike the mixologist shook up a drink I wouldn’t normally order: an Appletini. However, this beverage had a cinnamon and sugar-coated rim added to the equation. It’s named The Marissa after owner Marissa Powell and her renowned love of the drink. The cinnamon and sugar cut any taste of alcohol, and this delicious drink went down smooth. However, as would quickly become a theme, Mike wasn’t willing to let me get out the door after having only tried one of his drinks. Marissa’s father Frank is a fixture in Pietro’s, and Frank has trouble remembering names so he simply calls everyone Howard. The Howard was the next drink on my tour, and this beer and shot combo (the Crown Royal is non-negotiable) is aptly named because after one or two you’ll likely start forgetting names, too. 4:02pm – Mas Mexicali Cantina

emy was shouting, and the bar was filling up with dinner patrons.] At this point I was just a passenger on the journey. I settled in as Al the alchemist encrusted the rim of a martini glass with crushed pretzel and salt. A Chocolate covered pretzel? I’ve only ever had that as a shot. Al lovingly decorated the glass with chocolate syrup then shook chocolate whipped cream vodka, Frangelico and Godiva white chocolate liqueur. It looked like a work of art, and I made quick work of this delicious martini that took longer to make it did to drink. The martini is sweet and savory and tastes as its name suggests. Frankly, I don’t remember leaving and have to thank Dan for safely escorted me down the treacherously crooked sidewalk. [Editor’s Note: Please remember, when drinking heavily, have a sober friend handy. It was at this point that we had to curb Jeremy’s attempt to cross High Street despite a high volume of oncoming traffic and a glowing, red “Do Not Cross” sign.]

sure to scribble down my thoughts in my note pad – consulting them the next day, they turned out to be mostly gibberish. After deciphering what I can of the notes, I have concluded that basil and simple syrup together is a match made in heaven, and that grain alcohol could be added to this mix and it would still taste amazing. Everything’s still fuzzy in hindsight; by that point I was embarrassing myself (and possibly my family) by remaining in public. My thoughts rushed to Dan – can he be trusted? Why did he do this to me? Did Thanksgiving happen? Did I order food? Cigarette? Where am I? I was shaken back to reality by the bartender’s inquiry about the drink, and I confirmed it was fantastic. Still, I wanted my burger to go. I took my burger, stepped out the door then suddenly woke up the next day safe and sound in my bed with a headache, notebook full of illegible chicken scratch, and a spent Social Lounge to-go container.

5:32pm – The Social Lounge My ability to walk was rapidly diminishThe smell coming from the kitchen of The ing as Dan guided me to Kooma, my eyelids Social Lounge jarred me into drunken hunrelaxed and setting with the sun. Most towns can’t facilitate a proper bar crawl. You need a good variety of quality bars, all within walking distance. Downtown West Chester offers a car-free journey across the brick sidewalks, from swanky martini bars to college favorites. There’s something memorable for everyone… even if you don’t always remember all of it... or most of it.

When I caught back up with the rest of the crew after a quick trip to the powder room, bartender Josh had a Pepino ready for me. Giro tequila with fresh lime, triple sec and housemade simple syrup with muddled cucumber – yes, cucumber. It’s refreshing and tantalizing, and the fresh cucumber and lime make it the best margarita I have ever had. For good measure Josh served up a Low Rider Candy Skull with Jack Daniels, sweet tea vodka, Goldschlager, coke and sour making for what he called a Fireball Long Island, an amalgamation of spicy, sweet liquor that is probably responsible for putting me over the edge. I was also powerless to say no to a $25 shot of Don Julio 1945, tequila that tastes more like Scotch than a typical Anejo. 4:47pm – Kooma

Jill McDevitt explores why something as natural and necessary as sex is so taboo

AST week, scientists at Rutgers created the world’s first movie of the female brain during orgasm. The research led me to thinking about how, when it comes to sex, being a lab rat is not all bad. Here are a few examples of people who got paid to climax in the name of science. Study # 1: Human Sexual Response Published: 1966 in a text book completely dedicated to the outcome of the study. What research subjects had to do: Vaginally masturbate in the laboratory using a plastic penis with a camera on the end of it to see where vaginal lubrication originates. Turns out, it doesn’t come from the cervix or a gland as previously thought, but rather is blood plasma that seeps through capillary walls in the vagina. The research was so groundbreaking on many levels, and much of what we know about female sexuality and orgasm today stems from this piece of research. Study #2: Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Male and Female Genitals During Coitus and Female Sexual Arousal

Published: 1999 in BMJ journal What research subjects had to do: The subjects would have intercourse in an MRI scanner, stopping periodically for scans. The layman rationale for the study was to understand the mechanics of sex. The researchers’ explanation was understanding “the caudal position of the male pelvis during intercourse, the potential size of the bulb of the corpus spongiosum, and the capacity of the penis in erection to make an angle of around 120° to the root of the penis, enabled penetration

along the bottom of the symphysis up to the woman’s promontorium”. The primary conclusion of the study was that academia can even make sex sound really unsexy. (Fun Fact: In this study, the participants were real couples. A similar study used random pairs so participants had MRI scans while they had sex with a stranger.) Study #3: The Effects of a Subjective Monitoring Task in the Physiological Measure of Genital Response to Erotic Stimulation Published: 1980 in the Archives of Sexual Behavior journal. What research subjects had to do: Watch pornography with instruments on their genitals measuring arousal while also making notes on how turned on they felt in order to determine how often physiological arousal matched up with mental or emotional arousal. Jill McDevitt holds a Master’s degree in Human Sexuality and is currently completing her PhD, which will make her the only person in the world with three degrees in the field. She is the proprietor of Feminique Boutique on Church Street. Her book, Fighting the Crusade Against Sex: Being Sex-Positive in a Sex-Negative World, is available now.

KING is a four-year-old, neutered male, American Staffordshire terrier who kept wandering from his unattentive owner’s property. He was simply searching elsewhere for the attention he didn’t get at home! He’d do well with a family who is home a lot and able to devote time to him.

«

GRIFFIN is a young, neutered, male who appears to be some kind of Lab/ Hound/Pointer mix. Although we don’t know his exact age, his energy level and puppy-like behavior suggest he can’t be that old. Griffin will benefit from a patient owner who has the ability to train him properly.

«

MAC is a neutered, adult male yellow Lab who was found as a stray. Mac is a very friendly and gentle boy who seems to love kids and would like nothing more than to be a member of a family. He has some training but may need some initial reinforcement on housebreaking.

INKY is a neutered male kitten that was brought to the shelter with his siblings after being found outdoors. Inky is now looking for a new, indoor home where he can play and snuggle with a family. The Chester County SPCA has many kittens in similar situations to Inky’s – why not adopt a pair?

«

MOM is another of the many who have come to us over the summer with kittens. Her kittens have all gone, but she’s still looking for a home. She is friendly, likes to be picked up, has been spayed and would love to spend hours sitting in your lap. Available for the special reduced adoption fee of $25.

«

MURPHY is a neutered, adult male tabby cat that was recently adopted from the SPCA but was brought back because his adopter is now moving. Murphy is a loving and docile cat who deserves a life-long commitment. Give him a chance, because he is certainly sick of being bounced around!

Seeing double: Kendra models two looks Adam Jones

T’S 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. Your bed looks like your closet just vomited all over it. The floor is covered with shoes. You’re sick of everything in your wardrobe, and it’s time to change it up. Fret not, because for this season, it’s all about the Body Con Dress. A what? A Body Con Dress is a dress that is fitted to hug all of your gorgeous curves. We’ve seen this style in lots of strapless silhouettes, but designers have modernized the look to give you more options for your Holiday outings. The two styles pictured on Kendra are sexy yet sophisticated ways to wear the Body Con Dress. The style on the left is a full-length sleeve, black dress with metallic silver splatters. While the scooped neckline and sleeve are still modest, the dress length and shape show everyone that you’ve got it going on. The style on the right is similar, but it’s a one shoulder dress – still a very popular look this season. It’s a feminine and flirty look without being overt. The fabric, though, is the best detail of the dress. Floral black lace overlays the nude lining so the lace pattern really pops. It’s classy, contemporary and simply beautiful. So instead of converting your bedroom into a disaster area, you need only pull out one dress that makes you look fabulous and exude the utmost confidence – the Body Con Dress. )
