I

HAVE to admit, I failed. After all the big talk in our last issue, I didn’t bring home a single prize. My pup lost by a significant margin in our Halloween Costume Contest For All Pets, work kept me from making it out to Chester County Art Association’s Pumpkin Carve, and I came in third place in Landmark’s costume contest behind a very convincing Andy Reid (“Blame me,” he kept repeating) and a store-bought Snow White. Losing to her hurt significantly more. West Chester, however, was a big winner because all of these competitions were extremely well-received. As for this issue, I know it seems like the holiday season gets longer every year, but we’re going to add to that expansion. Hey, at least we're not skipping Thanksgiving and moving right on to Christmas. In this issue you'll find excellent recipes from Limoncello sure to entertain your seasonal guests (I was lucky enough to try them, so I know you won’t be let down). They're worthy of being clipped from this magazine and retained for your records, so get out your scissors and turn to page 21. Since it's the season of giving, you’ll also find a short-but-sweet compilation of local charitable organizations. Check out the piece on page 15 for information on how you can get involved. Finally, knowing just how fat I get every year between November and January, we reached out in advance for a bit of help, and Brian Chamberlain of Club Fit 24/7 really delivered. You can find his home workout regimen in this issue on page 43. Finally, the weather might be getting chilly (What was with that snow storm?), but that shouldn’t keep you at home. There are a ton of great things to do in town this month, from wine tastings to fundraisers, and we hope to see you there. Dan Mathers

Getting A Head Start On The Holiday Spirit

D

Information we think you should know about charitable organizations in West Chester

ESPITE the fact that the holiday season has become overrun with commercialism, it still brings with it a sense of goodwill – of benevolence to our community. But why wait until Christmas to start the giving? Charitable organizations are often overwhelmed with donations and volunteers in December, so we here at The WC thought it might be a good idea to get the holiday spirit into swing a little early. We have put together some information on a few organizations in West Chester that work to better the community we all share. We encourage you to reach out to these organizations: you'll find some tips on how to get started below. Safe Harbor Shelter 20 North Matlack Street 610-692-6550 SafeHarborofGWC.org What Safe Harbor does for the community: Safe Harbor of Chester County is an independent, nonprofit organization pro-

viding food, shelter, friendship, counseling and recovery opportunities to homeless men and women in Chester County. Safe Harbor's objectives focus on rehabilitation, treatment, employment, financial stability and housing for its residents. How to get involved: People can volunteer to serve or prepare a meal once a month or they can provide a life skills session. You can reach kitchen supervisor, Tariya Edwards, by email, Tariyasafeharbor@comcast.net. What to donate: Safe Harbor accepts most items needed to run a household (cleaning supplies, paper goods, coffee, milk, sugar etc). They prefer new clothing – predominantly underwear and outerwear. Suggestions for items to donate are listed on their website. Cash donations are always welcome.

The Arc of Chester County 900 Lawrence Drive 610-696-8090 arcofchestercounty.org What Arc does for the community: The Arc of Chester County provides services to people of all ages with disabilities as well as their families. They provide services ranging from early intervention for infants and toddlers through employment, life skills and housing programs for adults. How to get involved: They're always looking for volunteers to help with events, committees and activities with clients. They are also looking for help speaking up about legislative issues impacting people with disabilities. By signing up to receive the ARConnections e-newsletter on their

What to donate: Monetary gifts as well as cars, and Box Tops for Education. How to donate: You can make online gifts with a credit card or mail a check. You can designate Arc for your United Way, State Employee Combined Appeal, or Combined Federal Campaign gifts at work. You can also purchase Arc Art cards and prints online or at The Arc. West Chester Food Cupboard 545 East Gay Street 610-344-3175 westchesterfoodcupboard.blogspot.com What the Food Cupboard does for the community: The West Chester Food Cupboard are an all-volunteer organization that provides a safety net for the many people in West Chester who are food-insecure. They try to make sure that West Chester families who struggle to make ends meet have enough food to last the month. How to get involved: You can run a food

drive in your neighborhood or workplace, or ask for a food or monetary donation to the WCFC instead of exchanging gifts. What to donate: Money, food, personal care and household cleaning products. How to donate: You can send a check to the Cupboard or visit the website and donate through PayPal. Chester County SPCA 1212 Phoenixville Pike 610-692-6113 ccspca.org What does the Chester County SPCA do for the West Chester Community? The CCSPCA is the county's largest non-profit animal welfare organization, serving nearly 5,000 animals each year. They accept both stray and surrendered animals. In addition to adopting animals out, they also help reunite lost pets with their owners. They also help the residents of Chester County by

offering pet food to people in need, low-cost rabies vaccinations, dog licensing services, and transport clinics to facilitate low-cost spaying and neutering. How can people get involved? People can get involved with their cause in many different ways. The best way to help an animal is to offer it a loving forever home. Although this isn't possible for everyone to do, everyone can help spread the message and remind others looking for pets to check out their local shelter or rescue group. You can also join the many dedicated volunteers. Volunteer applications are available at the shelter, or on their website. What kind of donations are best? The SPCA accepts both monetary and product donations. Due to the current renovations happening at the shelter, they have very little space to store physical donations at the moment. Therefore, monetary donations are most appreciated. However, items used daily, like towels and sheets, pet carriers and paper towels, are still very much appreciated. How should people go about making donations? They are happy to accept donations at any time in any form. Donations can be made in person at the shelter or by mail. Donations may also be made online.

Avoid That Thanksgiving Gut

Brian Chamberlain, co-owner of Club Fit 24/7, gives some tips on staying fit from home

VERY year we put on weight during the holidays. If you’re one of the few who doesn’t, well, then good for you. For the rest of the world, we thought it a good idea to prep with some excercises you can do at home (with dumbbells, kettle balls or even text books) to be more proactive this year For help we turned to Brian Chamberlain, a former professional body builder who is now a personal trainer and co-owner of Club Fit 24/7. The following excercises incorporate balance and coordination for extensive muscle recruitment, meaning you get more bang for your buck. “The more muscles you involve, the more you stimulate your metabolism, and the more calories you burn,” says Brian. These excercises are set to work the core and help you tone and burn calories, rather than bulking up.

1

1. Squat Shoulder Press From a standing position, angle your feet slightly outward in the same direction your femur (thigh bone) will point when you bend your knees. Then, bring the weights above your shoulders, making sure to keep your forearms vertical. Breathe in as you squat down, making sure to keep your back arched, head up, and chest and butt out. Squat until your hips and knees align. Exhale as you stand back up and extend your arms all the way. Repeat.

2. Deadlift Start this one from a standing position with the weights hanging at your sides. Again, angle your feet outward in the same direction as your femur. Keep your head up. Inhale and slowly squat down, making sure to keep your back arched with your head up, and chest and butt out. Stop when your hands are at about mid-shin. Exhale as you stand back up, and clinch the entire posterior (back) side of your body tight, bringing your shoulder blades together. Repeat.

Thanksgiving Gut-Busting ? From Page 21 3. One-Legged Dumbbell Back Row With your back arched and your body parallel to the ground, lift one leg off the ground. Hang your arms in front of you with weights in hand. Keep your back arched and head up. Also, keep your elbows close to your body. Slowly pull your elbows back and up as high as you can, then slowly let them back down. Switch legs and repeat.

4. Run The surest way to keep the weight off is with cardio. So, no matter how hard it may be to motivate yourself, you’ve just gotta do it. You can either get out and brave the elements, or you can head on down to the gym. For more advice, find Brian at Club Fit 24/7, located at 348 Hannum Avenue. The gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (hence the name). You can give them a call at 610-430-2048 or visit them on the web: clubfit247.com. Photos by Adam Jones

Finding Treasure

M

Pickin’ through Chester County, by Tara Dugan

OST look forward to spending time with friends and family at Thanksgiving, but there are plenty of people who would rather have a root canal than sit at the same table with relatives. Books, movies and reality television are full of feuding families, and the world of craftsmen is no exception. Think The Real Housewives of New Jersey are disloyal? Meet the Stickley Brothers. Born in Wisconsin in 1858, Gustav Stickley was the eldest of five brothers. Gus, as he was called, learned to make chairs in his uncle’s workshop. According to author and expert Larry Koon, Stickley was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement of the time, and by visits to missions in the American Southwest. He began producing mission furniture and published a catalog with do-ityourself instructions for home woodworkers. His work evolved over the years and iconic details emerged, including the use of quartersawn, white American oak and “through tenons” (where the joint protrudes though

the surface to lovely and solid effect). Gustav’s settles, bookcases and rockers remain popular today, and are sought after. A true prize might be marked with his motto “Als Ik Kan” – meaning "as good as I can." Gustav Stickley made furniture from 1898 until 1915, which seems a suspiciously short period of time for a man regarded as the master of American furniture from that period. So what happened? Gustav’s four brothers, Charles, Albert, John and Leopold, were also talented craftsmen, and guess what? They made mission furniture, too. Charles and Albert founded the Stickley Brothers Furniture Company in New York and Michigan, while Leopold and John George called themselves L. & J.G. Stickley. The brothers spent years venturing out on their own, creating numerous Stickley-

sounding furniture companies, and generally leaving everyone confused about what the name “Stickley” meant. So what ever happened to Gustav, the most famous Stickley? He was forced out of business and declared bankruptcy in 1915. A large group of competitors, chiefly his brothers, copied his work and made it for less. Gus went to work for Leopold and John, which was convenient as they took over his factory. Naturally, it didn’t last long. On the bright side, all of the work produced by any of the Stickley brothers is beautiful, strong and highly collectible. At a Chester County auction, I recently purchased a Stickley Brothers chair with its original label, dating it to about 1910. This label (the “Quaint” line from Stickley Brothers Furniture) made the chair easily identifiable to anyone who bothered to turn it over, but the well-known Stickley details revealed its identity at first sight. The beautiful tiger striping of the oak is still luminous after 100 years, and the reupholstered leather seat makes it as good as the day it left Leopold's shop. Or was it Gustav's?

The Dating Column

I

Diane Stopyra’s enlightened take on dating from a woman’s perspective

AM A firm believer that people should be able to date whomever they choose. Of course, there are a few big exceptions. No one in their right mind should be trying to court minors, anything that can be purchased at PetSmart, or Glenn Beck, but other than that, who cares who you are loving as long as you are loving someone? If you want to date a person of the same sex or of a different generation, and that person enjoys your company, too, then by all means, nourish the hell out of that relationship. I would never dream of begrudging anyone the right to romance. Well, almost. In the spirit of full disclosure, there is one coupling that annoys the hell out of me. It's a silly pet peeve, I know, and it's totally discriminatory. But I can’t help it. I am really bothered by short women who date tall men. Intellectually, I know that petite women have just as much a right to the six footers of West Chester as the tall ones do, but I can't help but feel a twinge of irritation whenever I see such a pairing. When you're a lady who’s only five feet tall, you can spend time with

whomever you like without height being an issue; even a tiny Tim is likely to tower over you. So why must you snatch up one of the few available men who is going to tower over me? At 5'8", I’m not super tall, but I am tallish. In my favorite pair of heels, I look ridiculous next to anyone who’s not an ogre. On the treadmill the other day, I watched a daytime talk show where a panel of guys discussed height differences in relationships. The short ones all agreed: the taller

the lady the better. Apparently, for vertically challenged men, a tall woman is an exciting challenge, like a mountain waiting to be scaled. The panel’s taller men, on the other hand, felt none of this macho incentive. They cared more about a pretty face and shapely legs. Unfortunately, this particular mountain would prefer it if her future rock climber didn’t have to look up the first time he gazes into her eyes. Ironically, it’s only the shorties who seem interested in me recently. I know, I’m probably being superficial, but I think everyone has got some kind of hang-ups about height. Last week, a friend told me about his crush on the singer Shakira. “Really?” I said. “I heard she’s only four-foot-eleven.” He thought about it for a moment before responding: “Imagine how manly I'd look to a woman that small.” So there you have it, dear reader. Once and for all, size does matter. Maybe such dating discrimination makes me shallow; that’s probably fair. But I figure if I’m going to spend my entire dating life feeling like a mountain of a woman, I can at least make the effort to be an honest one.

The November Playlist DJ Romeo's must-download tracks for the month

A

RECENT DJ Times poll voted Kaskade “America’s Best DJ 2011," and he has since released a two-CD album, Fire & Ice. The first CD, Fire, has all the original tracks recorded in collaboration with other artists. The second CD, Ice, includes Kaskade’s own remixes of the songs from Fire. The album will make a huge splash in the world of music. I’m drawn to Kaskade's music because, no matter what genre you like, you can relate to these songs through the vocals and instrumental beats. It's the same reason I'm picking Kaskade's new single as the song of the month. The rest of this list is a solid collection of party music that will serve as air candy while we prepare ourselves for the holidays.

A Trainer’s Tips On Staying Fit

I

Christine Mooney shares her insights on staying happy and healthy

N HIS writings, Ralph Waldo Emerson described his daily walks when he lived out in the small hut in the woods by Walden Pond. On any given day, he would walk 20 miles or more. He wrote that it wasn’t for exercise that he did this; instead it was for his soul. Truth is, though, whatever his motives, Emerson was still getting his exercise. But that idea of uniting something physical, like exercise, with the intangible intrigues me. (It should also be noted that on his walks, Emerson would talk to animals, squirrels in particular, in their “native tongues,” so you can take all of this with a grain of salt, if you’d like). Though I can’t remember the last time my mom and I took a walk together, at one time it was a daily ritual. Sometimes the walk was short and brisk, other times more languid. When Scout, our lovable, feisty, rescued mutt, came home with us, the walks became more start-stop-lunge-after-a-rabbit-find-aninteresting-tree-and-move-on sort of events. But whether we walked around the lake near the house or up the street to get a better view of the harvest moon, we still got our exercise

and always in a way that made it feel more holistic because as we walked, we talked. We could talk about anything. Those walks stuck with me. Even now, if I’m on a treadmill on a cold winter evening, I imagine myself walking back home with Mom around the lake. I picture each curve and the slope of the trail, and I feel more tired and a lot more at peace than when I started. The weather in our area this summer made life difficult. If it wasn’t the blistering heat that made anything besides drinking iced tea in an air-conditioned living room

sound miserable, it was the near-constant rain keeping us indoors. But autumn has been kinder to us, and in this brief reprieve before the cold settles in, spending time outside feels like a happy requirement, a rite of passage from one season to another. With this thought in mind, I recently took a walk through West Chester with a friend of mine and his Saint Bernard puppy. Leaves rustled underfoot, people stopped and cootchie-cooed over the dog. We ate breakfast at Penn’s Table amidst the smell of molding oak leaves. And then we walked back, the chill of the shadows broken up intermittently by the warming sun. It was soothing. That’s what walking does. It soothes. Maybe that quality isn’t always apparent, but it is truly cathartic. Regardless of the company — your mother, a friend, a spouse — walking is what humans were designed to do, just as we were designed to think. So go out, walk through our town, let your footsteps pound out the finer points of whatever you are contemplating, and in doing so, get in some exercise, regardless of the initial motives for stepping out your door.

Bartender Of The Month

Brian Nash of The Social Lounge talks music and whiskey

S

“One day I shot a 12-penny nail through my hand... the next day I got out of construction and back into bartending,” says Nash Adam Jones

URE, there are plenty of bartenders out there who just serve drinks – that’s their sole profession. But, there are also a large number of bartenders who serve drinks as a day job (albeit done at night) and pursue another project or passion on the side. Nash is in the latter category. He’s toured the country, playing guitar in bands that many from the West Chester area would recognize, and he’s still at it. We met up with Nash during a recent shift behind the bar at The Social Lounge. Name: Brian Nash, but just call me Nash. Age: 31 Hometown: West Chester Have you held any jobs other than bartending? Construction and music. What do you play? Guitar, bass, a little piano. I play just about everything except for drums – I just can’t separate my body into playing eight different things at the same time. What bands have you played in? A couple, but the big one was Monacy, and now I’m playing in a group called Spacecamp.

What happened with Monacy? I played lead guitar, and we were touring all over the East, recorded two albums, but not everyone in the band had faith in themselves and how good we could be. So, after a while they said, “This is all we’re gonna be,” and we split up. And Spacecamp? We’re original rock. It’s sort of like Jack Johnson meets... I don’t even know, man. We’ll get up on stage with spaceman costumes, and the music is all fun. It’s me on electric guitar, a guy on acoustic and a DJ keeping the beat. Do you ever play in West Chester? Yeah. Donnie [Donnie Moore, owner of The Note and co-owner of The Social Lounge] is putting us on at The Note as an opening act pretty soon. Where else have you bartended? I worked out at Ruffini’s in Thorndale and at The Blue Lagoon in Santa Cruz, California. What took you to Santa Cruz? I went out there to play in a band, but it turned out that nobody in the band was very good, so I ended up bartending. I did get to play with John Lee Hooker while I was out there though. How did you get into bartending? Well, I

was doing it out in Santa Cruz, but then I moved back this way, and I was working construction. One day I shot a 12-penny nail through the back of my hand and had to play a show that night. I was in horrible pain, but I played the show, and the next day I got out of construction and back into bartending. Do you have a specialty drink? We’re about to roll out a new cocktail menu here at The Social Lounge, just waiting for the menus to arrive. We’re going to have Prohibition-era cocktails, and I make an excellent Old Fashioned. And what do you drink? Jameson. Miller Lite and Jameson. Though, we have Pumpking on tap right now, it’s brewed by Southern Tier, and I would drink that every day if I could. What’s the best night to bartend? Coming from a music perspective, I love being in here on Monday nights when we have The Rolling Thunder Blues Review and open mic. Rolling Thunder are just evil – they’re amazing musicians, and there is just nowhere else to go on a Monday night and get to see that kind of talent. We’re also starting Mojitio & Burrito Wednesday, so I think that’ll be pretty good, too.

Feeding The Holiday Hordes

T

Paul and Frank Mingrino of Limoncello share some secrets

HERE are a few restaurants in West Chester that have become staples in a community that loves to eat just as much as it loves to drink. Limoncello is, undoubtedly, one of those places. Run by the Mingrino family, Limoncello is one of West Chester's favorite stops for Italian food. What you might not know about Limoncello is that their restaurant, located at 9 North Walnut Street, isn't the only place you can get their food. Limoncello also have a flourishing catering business. So, when we wanted to design the perfect holiday menu, we turned to brothers Frank and Paul Mingrino for help. They were kind enough to share recipes for an appetizer, entrée and dessert/cocktail. Appetizer: Arancini Thought to have originated in Sicily in the 10th century, arancini are fried rice balls coated with bread crumbs and filled with meaty, cheesy goodness. If you do it right, the outside is crisp, while the insides are soft and gooey. This recipe yields 16 croquettes. Ingredients 3 oz butter (room temperature) 5 oz peas 5 lbs ground meat (90% lean) 3 cups risotto 1/2 cup grated Parmesan 5 oz Mozzarella cheese 1 large egg yolk All-purpose flour for dredging Egg washes – 2 large eggs whisked 1 cup breadcrumbs Vegetable oil for deep frying 2 cups tomato sauce 5 cups water Directions 1. Cook the risotto in water until it is soft and there is no water left. 2. Let it cool for two hours. 3. Mix in butter and Parmesan. 4. Cook ground meat. Drain the excess fat from the pan. 5. Season meat with salt and pepper and mix in tomato sauce. 6. When risotto is cool, cup in hand and stuff in ground meat, peas and Mozzarella, then top with more risotto and roll into a ball. 7. Flour the ball, dip in egg wash and coat with breadcrumbs. 8. Fry in a pot of oil at 375 degrees until golden brown. 9. Serve with warm tomato sauce.

We were lucky enough to convince one of West Chester's favorite restaurants that it would be good idea to teach our readers how to make some of their signature treats Adam Jones Entrée: Chicken Valdostano This chicken and cheese dish comes hot off the skillet, dripping with a white wine/mushroom sauce. The flavors meld together perfectly, and the cheese oozes out of each bite. It's hearty, savory, and is a dish your guests are sure to enjoy. Ingredients 2 oz extra virgin olive oil 2 tbs all-purpose flour 6 8-oz chicken breasts, halved 1/4 cup of butter

10 fresh mushrooms, sliced 3/4 cup sweet marsala wine 3/4 cup chicken stock 3 tbs fresh parsley, chopped 6 thin slices prosciutto di Parma 6 slices Fontina cheese 2 oz fresh basil, chopped 8 oz fresh baby spinach 12 toothpicks

It’s Just A Three-Letter Word

E

Jill McDevitt explores why something as natural and necessary as sex is so taboo

VERYONE has seen those funny email forwards of bizarre state laws like, “In California it’s illegal to eat an orange in your bathtub.” Similarly, there are odd sex laws: in Halethorpe, Maryland, it’s illegal to kiss for more than one second in public. It’s funny to think about how such silly rules came to be legislated. Less funny, however, is when these sex laws are actually enforced. From my workshop “The Politics of Sexual Oppression,” the following is a list of sex things you are not (or were not) free to do in our own free country. Own Six or More Sex Toys: Under Texas Penal Code it’s illegal to own six or more sex toys, or as the code calls them, “obscene devices.” Numerous people have been prosecuted under this law, including the clerk at a sex shop in Lubbock, Texas in 2007. During a sting operation, an undercover officer asked to see the hidden display of sex toys, and then arrested her. There was speculation that the woman who showed the officer the vibrators available for sale would have to register as a sex offender. In Alabama, selling an adult a sex toy is punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to one

year in prison. Have Sex with a Same-Gender Partner: We know in many places in America, it’s illegal to marry a same-gender partner. Until just a few years ago, sex with a same-gender partner was illegal, too. In 1998 in Houston, Texas, a man was having sex with his male partner in his home until a neighbor called police, who then entered the unlocked home with guns drawn and arrested the two men. They were charged with violating the Texas anti-sodomy law, fined $200 and spent the night in jail.

Walk Around Your House Naked: In 2009, a Virginia man was naked in his kitchen making coffee at 5:30am. A woman and her child were cutting across his lawn and saw him naked through his window. The woman called police and they entered his home without a warrant and arrested him at gunpoint. The case went to trial. He was acquitted but had $15,000 in legal fees, lost custody of his child, and lost his job. Watch Pornography: In 2001, then Attorney General John Ashcroft started handing out indictments on federal obscenity charges. Obscenity is defined as something that is designed to be sexually arousing and lacks literary, artistic, political or scientific value. Speech deemed “obscene” is not protected by the First Amendment. As such, a husbandand-wife team of pornography producers were arrested and spent a year in prison. Jill McDevitt holds a Master’s degree in Human Sexuality and is currently completing her PhD, which will make her the only person in the world with three degrees in the field. She is the proprietor of Feminique Boutique on Church Street. Her book, Fighting the Crusade Against Sex: Being Sex-Positive in a Sex-Negative World, is due out this month.

DEXTER is a spunky, six-monthold, neutered male Pit Bull that was brought to the SPCA because his owner kept him in an unfinished basement and often left him without food or water. Like any puppy, Dexter will need all of his training and lots of exercise to release his puppy energy.

«

GRIFFIN is a young, neutered, male who appears to be some kind of Lab/ Hound/Pointer mix. Although we don’t know his exact age, his energy level and puppy-like behavior suggest he can’t be that old. Griffin will benefit from a patient owner who has the ability to train him properly.

«

PRINCE is a six-year-old, neutered, male German Shepherd. His previous owner kept him chained outside and didn’t interact with him very much. Naturally, he’s a bit independent, but he does love going for long walks and does well on a leash. He seems to be good with other animals, too.

The West Chester Food Safari

L

Jeremy Malanka is a simple man in search of breakfast foods

IKE Ron Swanson of Parks and Recreation, I am a simple man – I like pretty, dark-haired women and breakfast foods. While it would seem these two things would also go hand in hand, breakfast in West Chester is not always that simple – it can be decadent and luxurious. Nudy’s Cafe, located on the corner of Market and New, is a haven for pancakes and French toast. My favorite is the Melba, a double stack of French toast with a creamy raspberry sauce, fresh fruit and whipped cream. It seems like more of a desert, but one bite will have you returning every day for your breakfast fix. There are multiple other combinations of fruit and pancakes, but one for this season is the pumpkin spice pancakes sprinkled with cinnamon. A hop, skip and a jump down Market Street is Market Street Grill. The head chef is a woman after my own heart, because Darla’s breakfast is one of my favorite things about West Chester. Her Eggs Benedict stand out, particularly the cornbread and avocado Benedict, and the Donny Benny.

The Donny is named after High Street Caffé owner Donny Syracuse, and it consists of a classic Benedict of poached eggs and ham over an English muffin, smothered in cream chipped beef – truly a breakfast of champions. My favorite is the grilled cheese benny: grilled cheese with tomato and bacon topped with poached eggs and hollandaise. I’ll stop in at Market Street once a week to enjoy this, all washed down with West Chester’s own Lamont Café Blend coffee. Penns’s Table is located in the heart of the downtown of West Chester. It’s a classic spot that is always loud and busy. It has all the breakfast classics from pancakes

to homefries, Benedicts to French toast. However, at this spot it’s not the food, but the atmosphere that I love. When you walk in you can feel history exuding from the walls. There are photos of local and national celebrities, as well as locals like you and me that have visited the breakfast spot and made it what it is today. With outdoor seating, this is the place to start your day in the downtown when the sun is out. Every town needs a bagel spot, and West Chester’s is Country Bagel. They offer over a dozen types of bagels as well as fantastic cream cheese blends. I love the jalapeño cheddar bagel with a chive spread. If you’re in a hurry their breakfast sandwiches are great and quick, but get there early, because this place is popular and the line can reach the front door. The staff is welcoming and accommodating and deal with crowds efficiently. If Ron Swanson made a visit to our town, I believe he would appreciate it like you and I do. There’s a breakfast for the simple man with a thing for brunettes, and a dish or two for the blonde in need of something extravagant.
