Clip Art Contest WHILE you are poring over the pages of The WC, you will have the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to use at a local business. How would you go about winning this? We have sneakily hidden a happy little sun in one of the ads in this issue. It’s a smaller version of the guy above. When you have located the piece of clip art, enter our contest by sending an email to dan@thewcpress.com. Make sure the subject line of that email reads “WC Clip Art Contest.” In the email, tell us on which page you found the clip art and in which ad the clip art was hidden. Don’t forget to include your name and address in the email so that we can send you your prize. A winner will be selected utterly at random by the time the next issue of The WC is printed, and the name of that lucky person will be printed in the next issue of The WC and at www.facebook.com/thewcpress. Last week’s winner was Phil Tripp who found the clipart hidden in the Spaz Beverage ad. Good luck this week!

I

T’S SAFE to say you’ve noticed that West Chester has quickly grown from the quaint town in a quiet suburb that it was just 10 years ago. It is now home to a collection of restaurants, bars, shops and a healthy social scene... and you will be reminded of this every time you pick up The WC, which I hope will be every single week in the not too distant future. The team behind The WC will not only be profiling the people who run the restaurants, pour the drinks, plan the activities and curate the shops but will also be turning the spotlight on the people who enjoy this town. Flip through these pages and you will see what I mean – our photographer will be traveling to events all over the borough, capturing the fun of a parade, the excitement of a local fundraiser, the energy of a Friday night out. Although we’ll try to refrain from using buzz words like hyperlocal (oops) we WILL be paying special attention to establishments right here in downtown West Chester. But that doesn’t mean we won’t try to create a paper that reaches out to the community of greater West Chester and Chester County. The WC is here, in short, to celebrate West Chester’s diverse and growing culture. The culture that you, and I, and everybody else in town knows and loves. We hope you join us each and every issue to be kept abreast of events, fundraisers and specials. We’ll introduce you to the people who make up your community and maybe even enlighten you about places and things you didn’t know existed. We’ll see you there. Dan Mathers

Finding Treasure

Grove, just under a half-hour’s drive from downtown. It has great walking paths, and as I rounded the back of the park, I spotted a yard sale on the other side of the fence. Hard to believe I could see anything at my blistering 12-minute-mile pace, but there it was. Even from a distance I could see that the goods, though plentiful, were drenched and muddy. Only my iron-willed determination to avoid exercise convinced me to head over. After perusing the sad, soggy quilts, toys and tools that had been left in the rain, I was ready to give up when something caught my eye. In a muddy heap of chairs I spotted an unusual butterfly-shaped inlay in the veneer. Upon closer inspection, the dirty pile was actually a

set of six mid-century modern dining chairs. I didn’t know what they’d look like beneath the grime, but I offered $10 for all six, based on that butterfly inlay alone. When I got the chairs home I was thrilled to find that they were sturdy and cleaned up beautifully. The veneer literally glowed under my cleaning rag and the original black vinyl seats regained their buttery softness. Though they were certainly lovely, I still didn’t know what I had. Thanks to Google and those distinctive butterfly joints, I found I had a rare set of Lane Acclaim dining chairs. The beautifully crafted Acclaim series was made in the late 50s and early 60s, with gorgeous walnut veneers and visible fruitwood dovetails. As Lane wrote back then: “So precise are these joinings that your fingertips, brushing across the surface, cannot detect them.” The pieces are highly collectable and my chairs found a home with a collector in Washington, D.C. When you are out hitting yard sales this spring, remember that the best treasure is usually buried treasure – even under mud.

FTER a long winter trapped indoors, spring brings gifts to coax us from hibernation. Some look forward to daffodils and cherry blossoms, but the true harbinger of spring for the treasure hunter is the yard sale. Whether held in a garage, on a stoop or elsewhere, the yard sale is commerce in its purest form. I have it, you want it, you pay me and take it home. Done. No storefront, mercantile license or sales tax number required. Though some may disagree (and may be married to me), the charm of the yard sale comes from the wildly eclectic offerings of the amateur merchants. Frequently met with headless Barbies, or worn out Old Navy sweatshirts, the die-hard yard sale corps are an optimistic bunch whose hope is renewed with each new homemade sign. Just keep your eyes sharp when scanning the junk or you might miss a great score. It had been raining all week in West Chester, so the first break in the weather sent me out to Penn Township Park in West

Bartender Of The Week

Rik Cadavid of Kooma talks about martinis and his hatred of parking meters

W

“It’s not just about the sushi here,” says Rik Cadavid of Kooma. Adam Jones

HEN you buy a drink at Kooma and leave the change on the counter, those quarters could be going to good use. “If I see a meter running out and I have quarter, I’ll put one in,” says Rik Cadavid. We caught up with Rik to talk about life as a bartender, and ended up learning about life in The WC. Name: Rik Cadavid. Age: I’d really rather not say. Hometown: Queens, NY. What brought you to West Chester? Primarily school. I went to West Chester University and studied literature with a minor in speech communication. How long have you been bartending? Since about 2000, maybe 1999. Have you bartended anywhere else in town? I started at Iron Hill and was there for seven years. I was briefly at Kildare’s for a couple months, but I’ve been at Kooma for the past five-and-a-half years. When is the bar busiest? The bar is busiest for dinner between 7:30-9:30pm,

and on weekends we clear out some of the tables for a dance floor. We get the DJ in there around 11pm, and we’re pretty busy from 11:30 to about 1:30am. Have you heard about the proposed drink tax? I have heard about it. I don’t fully know what they’re planning. What are they proposing, a 10% tax on drinks? Basically. I don’t think it would be worth it, because bars would just end up charging more for drinks to make up for the loss, and so the money is coming right out of people’s pockets. I’m already frustrated enough by what they’ve done with parking. What about parking? Well, the meters used to run until 5pm during the week, now they run until 10pm Monday to Friday and again from 5pm-10pm on Saturday. How mean, how much do they think they can get out of people coming into this town? With that and a drink tax they’re going to start driving away business. What are the most common drinks in Kooma? We are pretty popular as a martini bar and lounge, so I make a lot of the drinks

on our martini list. It’s mostly the French Whore, our take on a French Martini, the Cherry Cosmo, a Cosmo made with cherry vodka, and the Stoli Razzle, which is served in a champagne glass and with grenadine and sugar on the rim. Can we say that’s your favorite cocktail? [Laughing] No, no, no. It’s a great drink, but I wouldn’t call it my favorite. Well then, what is your favorite cocktail to make? The Dirty Dirty. It’s basically a dirty Ketel One martini. What is your least favorite drink to make? No bartender really likes to make a drink that is too process oriented. We make a Sweet 16 cocktail that has Tang, Stoli Peach and triple sec, with Tang coating the rim. I don’t really like making a lot of those. What makes Kooma a great bar? I have to say it’s the diversity of the crowd. We get a huge variety of people in here, from people who just turned 21 right up to people who are in their 50s. And, they all mix really cohesively. It’s not just about the sushi here.

What is the most romantic thing someone has ever done for you? It was probably a picnic for two on the hills outside of downtown West Chester. How often do you receive flowers? I don’t know... once this year? Not often enough. [Editor’s Note: We’re looking at you, Rich Meadows.] Flowers courtesy of... The Dating Column

Diane Stopyra’s enlightened take on dating from a woman’s perspective

I

’VE HAD very few relationships. Sure, I’ve been on a lot of dates, probably more than I should admit. But when it comes to the serious, exclusive, wearhis-T-shirt-to-bed kind of relationship, I’ve only been in two. And each, suffice it to say, stunk. The first one was especially bad. Lifetime movie kind of bad. You’vebeen-convicted-of-what?! kind of bad. Now, looking back, I breathe a sigh of relief that this relationship ended when it did. But at the time, I was devastated. If love is a battlefield, I was a wounded soldier. For a long time, I was constantly on the verge of tears. Every man I saw on the street reminded me of my ex – he was tall like my ex, he had hair like my ex, or, you know, ears like my ex. Every song I heard became the soundtrack to my own personal pity party. I would have cried to the Macarena. After a month, mostly to keep my family and friends from shopping in the self-help section of Atlantic Books for me, I got out of my pajamas, took the shower I’d been neglecting and decided that if life was going

www

to keep on keeping on around me, I needed to get back on my feet. Desperate to feel normal again, I took some pretty wacky advice from anyone willing to dish it out. First, I read a book in which the author travels, after a horrible break-up, to a new age massage therapist. In the story, the therapist recommends wearing bright-colored panties to help rebalance sexual chakras and to brighten one’s aura. Not knowing or caring what chakras were, I bought new underwear. Of course, I was just as miserable in

neon lingerie as I’d been in granny panties, so my mother suggested that I make new friends and be more social. Even though I’ve got the hand-eye coordination of a goldfish, I joined a company softball team. Foolishly, I volunteered to play catcher, an especially difficult position to handle while wearing an aura-brightening thong. When the season ended, I continued doing anything and everything to feel less sad. I wasn’t content with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and a bubble bath, like most girls going through a breakup. Instead, I took up yoga, seriously considered shaving my head, learned to make lasagna and bought an impromptu ticket to Switzerland. None of these things worked. When it comes to mending a broken heart, the greatest healer isn’t a new age massage therapist or any aura-brightening piece of clothing – it’s time. Wait long enough and even the most painful heartache subsides. One day, you wake up and realize that every relationship will end, until the one that doesn’t. And maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.

What’s Happening In West Chester

M

Dan Mathers ventures outside the borough in search of a ride home

Y WIFE clocks in at a massive 117lbs (sorry to put that out there, babe) and has the alcohol tolerance of a toddler. If we go somewhere that’s not within walking distance of our house, she can’t even sip on a light beer if she’s planning on operating heavy machinery. There’s no wine with dinner, no cocktails on the patio under the sun. If she’s driving, she’s not drinking. It’s not quite as bad when it’s my turn to drive, because I weigh nearly 200lbs. Problem is, we like to drink together. She’ll have her “G&T,” and I’ll have whatever tap beer is the hoppiest. If one of us has to stay sober, it’s not as much fun – even for the drinker – as it is when we drink together. That’s why Duffer’s is a blessing: they have a party bus. The Duffer’s we head to is off of Route 352 (N Chester Road) near the intersection with 926 (Street Road). Google Maps says it’s less than six miles from downtown West Chester, and as long as you’re

there, they’ll give you a ride home to just about anywhere on their decked-out party bus. This past weekend the driver took a group to the edge of Malvern without a complaint. True, you may have to share the bus with a group of kids hauling home from a 21st birthday party, but that’s rare... especially if you hitch a ride before last call. I can’t think of a bar with a more diverse crowd than Duffer’s. It’s the place my stepdad and I head when he gets the notion he can still beat me in shuffleboard. It’s the place I took my little sister for her 22nd birthday because she (rightly) claimed she could whoop me in eight ball. I’ve lost many a game of Golden Tee and seen many a meathead prove his manli-

ness on the automated punching bag. I’ve also had one too many shots from their oversized shot glasses. The upstairs at Duffer’s has a long bar and plenty of seating. I’ve met old friends there to watch the game, grab a bite to eat and relax. Downstairs at Duffer’s is the kind of place where the bouncers won’t throw out your little sister because she got into a shouting match with a grown woman over a game of pool while you were away in the restroom – they’ll just buy her a rematch to settle the argument. Plus, they’ve recently banned smoking in the basement (a long-standing tradition), so non-smokers feel at home, and smokers get the pleasure of huddling around outside the door making new friends. We all know there is plenty to do in the borough, especially during restaurant week and with the film festival coming up tomorrow, but sometimes it’s nice to get out of the bubble you’re used to. It’s even nicer to have a designated driver... just don’t forget to tip.

FREEA is a nice young adult spayed female Pit Bull. She came to the shelter as a lost dog with puppies. Her puppies are adopted, and she’s been waiting her turn for a forever home. She loves car rides, seems to know most basic training, and takes rawhide very nicely.

«

HOSS is an adult neutered male Pit Bull. He was lost and brought to the shelter to find a home. He is very sweet and mellow, and loves people and attention. He is very well behaved and seems to know basic commands. He’s a big boy – weighing in at 73lbs, but he’s a gentle giant.

«

JULIE is lost and looking for a new loving home. Cute as a button with a brown coat and short hair, this Pit Bull mix has lots of love to give. She can be nervous around strangers, so go slow with her. She loves to play with toys though, so hand her a rawhide and she’ll be on cloud nine.
