What Does Expo 2011 Show Us?

M

uch like the window that turns to a mirror at night, Expo 2011, our 11th annual fall conference and tradeshow, offers us an opportunity to look outside our current comfort zone, as well as to reflect those things we hold important.

The tradeshow floor gives us that window to the future.

More than 60 exhibitors, most of whom are RHA affiliate members, make a substantial financial commitment so they can showcase for the RHA industry members the latest

in products and services. The center section of this issue of Bay State Apartment Owner displays the logos of our exhibitors, some entering their 11th year of participating in the show, and others who are exhibiting for the first time.

What they all have in common is their leadership in their respective fields. Although many are competitors, all support the show because they recognize the RHA as an important industry organization. Exhibiting is also a good business decision, as evidenced by the testimonials we receive every year.

Rental Housing Association’s NextGen committee. This newlyformed committee invites RHA members with 10 or fewer years in the industry to participate in programs and social media designed for and by the NextGen committee. Non-members are welcome, with the “NextGen Test Drive,” an opportunity to sample what the committee and RHA have to offer at a low introductory rate. Stop by the NextGen booth at the tradeshow and learn more.

Learning is what we see when we look at the window as a mirror. It reflects back to us one of the core components of the services that our members rightfully expect – education.

We start the day with Kate Good, professional apartment industry speaker and consultant, presenting a session titled “Total Team Tactics for Higher Occupancy.” You will walk away with and be able to implement Kate’s tips, allowing you to engage all of your property team members to improve property performance.

We will also offer an environmental update panel. Over the past year, the Environmental Protection Agency’s adoption of the renovation, repair and painting rule, and the subsequent assumption of enforcement by the Commonwealth, has created a new regulatory regime for those working with lead painted surfaces. And while there was a rush to achieve certification a year ago, John MacIsaac of ASAP Environmental will give your maintenance team members the information they need to stay abreast of what has transpired recently.

In the same vein, our environmental update will separate the hype from the facts on bed bug remediation. Mark Weaver, of

Crime and Death Scene Cleaning M.D. Weaver, will provide a quick update on best practices in dealing with this pervasive issue.

For our second session, all attendees will gather to hear perennial favorite Jackie Ramstedt, chief motivational officer for Ramstedt Enterprises. Her session, “In It to Win It,” will show you how to harness your passion and drive your performance to achieve extraordinary results.

It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy Ruettiger achieved his first goal in life – to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. As fans cheered RU-DY, RU-DY, he sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the only play in the only game of his college football career.

Hear, from our keynote speaker, the inspiring story behind the film “Rudy,” and see how significant obstacles are overcome with a lot of heart and determination.

And Now, for the Rest of the Story…

T

he late radio commentator Paul Harvey had finely-honed story-telling skills: setting the stage, engaging the listener, and telling the story, only to be interrupted by what we would call a commercial break. After the break, Harvey would complete the tale, often with a surprise ending and then close with his trademark, “and now you know the rest of the story.”

And while I would not presume to share his story telling abilities, the dramatic style of his delivery, or the wit that was so often displayed, I can share with you the “rest of the story.”

The fact that this issue of Bay Sate Apartment Owner is dedicated to Expo 2011, the Rental Housing Association’s 2011 Fall Conference and Expo, is inescapable. Our president’s message offers a preview of the speakers and the content of their presentations. He also makes reference to our exhibitors, whose logos can be found on pages 10 and 11. The feature article profiles our speakers. In all, Expo 2011 is an impressive array of exhibitors and presenter enough to justify your investment in the event.

But now, it is time for the rest of the story. There are two additional major benefits of Expo 2011 that we have not talked about: networking and recognition.

To ensure maximum, sustained participation on the tradeshow floor by the industry members, the conference features both a continental breakfast there during the morning exhibition session, as well as a buffet lunch at the opening of the afternoon session. This affords both the industry and affiliates the opportunity to share informal conversation over a snack or light lunch, creating a positive, relaxed atmosphere conducive to developing and maintaining relationships.

Following our keynote session, we celebrate the excellence in our industry by recognizing both corporate excellence with our Communities of Excellence Awards as well as the more personal Achievement Awards. The call for entries, which is available at www. gbreb.com/rha, highlights the five professional achievement award categories as well as the five categories for recognition as a Community of Excellence. All of the awards are presented immediately following the keynote to ensure the greatest possible recognition by the peers of those selected to win.

And finally, we have the closing reception. After a day of networking, education, a tradeshow with industry leading exhibitors, an inspiring keynote address and a celebration of excellence, we all gather for our closing reception. New relationships are forged, old acquaintances are renewed, and the energy becomes palpable as we wind up one of the most productive days on our industry events calendar.

Rudy Ruettiger, keynote speaker

Against all odds, on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger in 27 seconds carved his name into history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. The son of an oil refinery worker and third of 14 children, Ruettiger rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, but he achieved his first dream – to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. In 1993 TRISTAR Productions immortalized his life story with the blockbuster film “RUDY.” Today, a highly sought after motivational speaker, Ruettiger entertains with his motivational presentation to international corporate audiences with a unique, passionate, and heartfelt style of communicating. He reaches school children, university students and professional athletes with the same enthusiasm, portraying the human spirit that comes from his personal experiences of adversity and triumph.

His captivating personality and powerful message of “YES, I CAN” stays with his audiences forever.

In addition to his motivational speaking, Ruettiger has co-authored several books, including: “Rudy’s Insights for Winning in Life,” “Rudy’s Lessons for Young Champions” and “The Reveal Build-A-Big-Dream Journal.” He has established the Rudy Foundation, whose mission is to help children of all ages around the word reach their full potential. The Rudy Foundation develops and supports programs that positively impact the lives of children cognitively, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Kate Good

Kate Good has been leasing apartments her entire adult life. She quickly gained recognition from her employer, Trammell Crow, as the top leasing consultant by leasing 52 apartments and closing 48 renewals in one month! Her expertise and enthusiasm took her up the ladder in the corporate world until seven years ago, when she decided to start her own business as a professional speaker and marketing solutions

expert.

Good has shared her innovative ideas with many organizations, including apartment associations in 37 cities, and national conventions such as The National Apartment Association, 24 appearances at the MultiFamily Brainstorming Sessions, 10 presentations at the International Builders Show, and is an eight-time presenter at the Multi-Housing World Annual Convention. She consistently receives the highest marks possible for her content, presentation style and audience involvement. Her presentations have been described as “enthusiastic,” “cutting-edge,” and “quality information.”

Good spends the balance of her time working with clients in the for rent and for sale markets who desire a fresh and aggressive approach to solving marketing and sales challenges. As a leading marketing solutions expert, she is known for her hands-on approach and realistic plans that deliver desired results.

Jackie Ramstedt

Jackie Ramstedt, CAPS, CAM, CAS, is a nationally-renowned motivational keynote speaker, trainer, consultant, and performance coach who has more than 26 years of experience in the multi-housing industry.

She earned her CAM and CAPS designations back-to-back, then her Certified Apartment Supplier (CAS) designations, and she was awarded the CAS Designate of the Year from her local Austin Apartment Association, where she has served on the board of directors and the Education Committee. Ramstedt is an accredited instructor, teaching all designation courses for NALP, CAM, CAPS, CAS, ROC and CAMT, as well as core and MCE courses for the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). In 2008, she was awarded the “Faculty Member of the Year” for the Austin Apartment Association.

Starting out onsite as a part-time housekeeper and weekend leasing consultant, Ramstedt continued to work her way up through the ranks of apartment management, building credibility through her advancements, while winning numerous performance awards, including manager of the year. She has worked as a national marketing director, national performance director, national training director and university trainer for some of the nation’s largest management companies.

Ramstedt is an accomplished author, and her articles can be found in some of the industry’s leading publications. Her impressive clientele listing includes national management and investment corporations.

Her energetic and enthusiastic speaking style makes her seminars fun and exciting, with a downto-earth approach to education.
