Topologies of Air is a powerful and timely exploration of the implications of the changes in the composition, nature and use of airspace on each of us individually and as humanity.

The British Council Bahrain is delighted that artist Shona Illingworth spent time working on Topologies of Air in Bahrain and that its landscapes feature prominently in the work.

Through the Sky Forum that took place in April 2019, Shona had an opportunity to engage with the perspectives on air, airspace, outer space and the sky from scientists, archaeologists, historians, architects and artists based in Bahrain. She also hosted workshops with children to explore their imagination of the sky and what its future may hold.

Arts are a powerful way to connect people and cultures and offer imaginative ways to further mutual understanding. British Council supports a variety of cultural projects in Bahrain, offering opportunities for more people to experience visual arts, film, music, literature, performance from both the UK and Bahrain.

We are therefore very proud to be supporting the first exhibition of Topologies of Air, which was commissioned by The Wapping Project, and look forward to seeing this immersive three-screen video and surround sound installation on show at the Bahrain National Museum.

We hope you enjoy this publication featuring fragments of the many contributions that made Topologies of Air such a rich, complex and engaging installation – a journey through the places where Shona worked and the voices of those with whom she spoke to along the way.

The Bahrain National Museum (BNM) prides itself with a rich and diverse archaeological collection accumulated throughout years of excavation at various sites across the island. In 1953, excavations led by Danish archaeologists uncovered valuable insights into the history of the region, contributing artifacts added to the collection at BNM, many of which are on display today in the permanent galleries. Shona Illingworth, the granddaughter of one of those archaeologists, P. V. Glob, presents her artwork Topologies of Air, a sound and video installation examining the impact of accelerating geopolitical, technological and environmental changes on the composition, nature and use of airspace, in a gallery across from the one dedicated to archaeology. We have spent decades studying and exploring our terrestrial environment through surveying and excavations, while this exhibition explores other horizons to which we have been oblivious in the past. We need to reconsider our anthropogenic impact on the atmospheric layers of our planet.

An important part of Illingworth’s process of making the work was the research undertaken in Bahrain, where forums and workshops brought together people of different backgrounds and expertise to discuss and deliberate about the sky.

During her residency in Bahrain, I had the privilege of joining her during filming and gained insight into the techniques used in making video works, as well as her research and approach to her subject. What I have realised through this experience with Illingworth is that the atmosphere is something that each individual shares, and it is a common space that is perceived, impacted and appreciated in unique ways across different communities around the world.

We are grateful for the support of The Wapping Project in ensuring that this exhibition was accompanied by a series of workshops and educational sessions addressing local artists, broadening their perspective on international artist film and video. The BNM would also like to extend its gratitude to the British Council, DCMS and GREAT for supporting this project, through the UK-Gulf exhibition programme.

It was just over two years ago that The Wapping Project codirector Thomas Zanon-Larcher wrote to me about a project conceived with the artist Shona Illingworth that would explore the notion of air and how it is understood across time, cultures and geographies. The conversation resulted in the artist’s twoweek research and production residency in Sharjah in April 2019 as well as the Sky Forum, which brought together experts across history, culture, astronomy and space science in October to consider the past, present and future relationship of the people in the Arabian Gulf to the sky. With each of these projects, the artist’s engagement with the local context and community was both rewarding and deeply thought-provoking for everyone involved.

Illingworth’s time in Sharjah was planned as part of the artist’s ongoing work on a new commission with The Wapping Project. Titled Topologies of Air, this three-screen video installation offers audiences new ways to consider the importance, and often overlooked richness, of the sky as an overarching and fundamental element that unites all humanity.

It has been a great pleasure to collaborate with The Wapping Project on the realisation of this commission, which will now premiere at the Bahrain National Museum. Co-directors Marta Michalowska and Thomas Zanon-Larcher have been exemplary partners in this project, generously supported by the UK-Gulf Exhibition Programme, the British Council, DMCS and GREAT. It has also been a privilege to host the artist during her time with us in Sharjah. We would like to thank her for the truly meaningful contribution she has made to our work at the Foundation.

Air

a void is not

It was on board of a propeller plane, just above the line of thick autumn clouds, when we first talked about Topologies of Air. The artist Shona Illingworth and I were flying back from Belfast City Airport to London City Airport after a talk at the MAC, Belfast, the previous evening. That short and noisy flight felt like an appropriate setting to talk about air. We were hanging in its midst thanks to the technology that fulfilled the ancient human dream of flying, technology propelled by oil. But this was long before flight shaming. Only just over three years ago, but a whole generation of consciousness earlier. Before Veganuary, Extinction Rebellion, Greta Thunberg. Even before Blue Planet 2, paper straws and bamboo toothbrushes.

Perhaps the view on the setting sun in the deep blue sky from the Flybe plane window that provided the backdrop to Shona’s words that evening influenced my thinking. By the time we cut through the grey layer of clouds and hit the tarmac at London City, I was buzzing with excitement. I couldn’t wait to call Thomas and tell him about this project.

I was probably incoherent when I eventually called. I’m sure I couldn’t convey all the ideas and issues Shona talked about with such an eloquence and precision. She had been thinking about it for quite some time. Her childhood spent under the enormous skies of northern Scotland, next to a live bombing range made her look up with a mixture of awe and dread.

The dramatic landscape where she grew up could shift from being a place of tranquil beauty to a space of violence and terror within seconds as the military planes flew low above her head.

This experience stayed with her and prompted her to keep on looking up. Often looking up didn’t mean craning her head but shifting the perspective.

Topologies of Air is about air, the mix of gases that forms the Earth’s atmosphere, invisible when one breathes them in. But how does one talk about something that is as if it weren’t? Shona wasn’t going to map out the chemical composition of air and how it has changed, is continuing to change and will be changing in the future. This kind of analysis wouldn’t form a profound and engaging starting point for an artwork, at least not of the kind one would expect from Shona – an immersive piece that touches one on an intellectual, emotional and sensory level, one that lingers in one’s mind for a very long time, one the provokes questions, one that seduces with the beauty of its images, one that penetrates deep under the skin through its layered soundtrack.

There is much more to air than what one can take in a single breath: the sonic boom travelling through the invisible air to one’s ears when a fighter jet crosses the sound barrier and the emotions this sound evokes; the sand particles suspended in the air after a dust storm and how the wars in the Gulf region made these worse over the past four decades; the satellites that peek at us from the fuzzy boundary between the airspace and outer space and make the romantic idea of solitude in a landscape just an idea from a bygone era; the aerial bombardment which seems to have become a method of choice in most armed conflicts since the Second World War and the trauma it carries as an invisible threat to those who experience it on the ground; the sun reflectors and other outlandish technology being dreamed up by engineers and scientist trying to solve the climate crisis while ignoring its underlying causes; the space travel beyond the confines of the Earth’s atmosphere and the wish to know if we are alone in this universe; the international legal structure that tries to define who owns each section of the airspace and which is troubled by the possibility of space colonisation (Who owns the moon?); the radiation circling the atmosphere as an invisible cloud following a nuclear explosion and the memories of those that experienced it up close; the rights that perhaps we should have to protect us from threats from above; the night sky dotted with stars as a meeting place of science, religion and dreams.

Shona invited many people from across different disciplines into a conversation about air – atmosphere, airspace, outer space, climate, weather, breath and the sky. This publication brings together some of these voices alongside Shona’s images to accompany and celebrate the new installation Topologies of Air, an immersive three-screen video and surround sound installation, commissioned by The Wapping Project. We are delighted that we have been able to support the making of this timely work that encourages one to think about the element and the space that impacts every aspect of our lives as individuals and as humanity, and which is undergoing rapid and far-reaching changes at this very moment.

I can share the sky with you. No one has ownership of the sky. It is for all of us.

When we draw lines between the stars, we get our bear, our horse, our tiger, our lion. It is ours. I think it is the only free space for us. We can only enter it through imagination, through thoughts.

The threat of nuclear war was one of the most, I guess, iconic threats during the Cold War. And it can be argued that this has not changed. But what is perhaps less well known is that weather was also seen as a major potential Cold War weapon.

There’s a whole generation of children in the Middle East who understnd what drones mean. That sound.

And they respond in visceral ways.

I think most of the civilisations sought knowledge and wisdom from the sky.

It is the biggest thing in the world.

I think the sky is like a medicine for us.

The day sky and the night sky have changed profoundly since ancient times.

The sky has a cultural history, it has a chemical history, it has an environmental history. It has many, many histories.

I thought about the sound of cluster munitions falling on Lebanon. They make a particular sound. And during one of the episodes of violence there, I thought a whole generation of people were having that sound associated with that time of their lives.

It is paradoxical that we look at the sky to predict the future, when we are actually seeing the very distant past of the universe.

There were literally birds falling from the sky in Indonesia and Malaysia, because they were suffocating in the fires.

When we environmentally alter the air and the atmosphere above us, it has far reaching implications elsewhere around the globe.

Even if we cannot imagine how big the sky is, we know it is not like the earth. The earth is small. If I go west, I can reach somewhere.

If I go east, I can reach somewhere.

But the sky is endless.

I think for ancient societies the sky was always a very well-defined entity. The things which were associated with the sky were out of reach and distant, even though they were fully conceptualised.

For example, the night sky was very important for many purposes, both practical and ideological, but it has changed profoundly with light pollution, especially in our urban centres. We are subjected to light pollution which more or less takes away the experience of the ancient night sky.

I believe the best way to imagine what the sky was perceived as cross-culturally in the ancient past is to say that it was a constant of cyclical contrasts, with the moon, the sun, the astral phenomena, the stars and the planets. They are constant, and they are also cyclically constantly changing. And you have to make sense of that when you are living under the sky.

These cyclical constants were important to all societies. It seems that there was a cross-cultural agreement across all continents. Once you as a society developed a conceptual framework for explaining what happens above in the day sky and the night sky, it provided you with ontological security – a sense of order and continuity and an explanation of what you are going to experience throughout your life. This conceptual framework gave you a sense of place in the reproduction of everything, which is essentially a definition of cosmos, at least a very broad one.

In the past, people did not know what the moon eclipse was. Now it is simple for us. It is nothing. But before when people saw it, they thought that a monster came and was holding the moon, pressing on the moon. They would make noise by grinding coffee or cardamom to ask the monster for mercy for the moon.

They would tell the monster that the moon is innocent. ‘Please leave him.’

They would pray for the moon to be free.

I remember when I was a child, I heard this grinding sound from many houses. It was like music. Sometimes, I did not hear it for a long time and would wait for it, even if it was scary. Every child can imagine a monster – a dinosaur or a dragon or something like that. I always imagined the monster as a giant dog.

Sometimes when the moon became red or bluish, my grandmother was really scared and believed that it was the monster. If she heard a huge sound coming from the sky, she would think that it was God beating angels because they made a mistake.

My grandmother was a treasure trove of unusual fairy tales and stories about monsters. When she saw a black cat, she would tell us to go inside. She did not think the cat was a cat. It was in Khor Fakkan. We were surrounded by the mountains, the sea was in front of us.

There were many strange beliefs there.

Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Sharjah, April 2019 For the ancients, the universe was centred around Earth in the geocentric system. The Greeks believed that each 19

planet around Earth moves around in a spatial sphere and that there was one sphere for Mercury, after Earth, one for Venus, one for the Sun, one for Mars, one for Jupiter, one for Saturn and the last one was the sphere of stars. They had no idea that this sphere of stars is not at the same distance from Earth.

It took us 3,000 years to change this concept, to put the Sun at the centre and then the planets, move away from geocentric to heliocentric system. In the seventeenth century, the heliocentric system was not very widely accepted because people needed a proof that the Sun is at the centre. Having the Sun at the centre of the Solar System did, believe it or not, free our minds from being geocentric. If the Sun is just one star among billions of stars, and Earth is just one planet among zillions of planets, we may not be unique.

From one planet at the centre of everything, to one star at the centre, to

one galaxy, to trillions and trillions of galaxies. This is how our minds have opened to the whole universe. If you compare this with the ancients, how they thought about the sky, it was very restrictive.

Today, the limits of our universe depend upon what kind of tools you use to observe it. If you use only optical tools, it may be limited because our telescopes are limited. But if you look beyond that optical window, if you use the infrared window, if you use the radio window, the universe is much, much, much larger.

As we advance in technology, we see better, and we see farther and farther. Our concept of the sky today is very different from the old concept.

We have a wider understanding of the universe than, let’s say, only about a hundred years ago. A big leap.

Maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after tomorrow, maybe next month, maybe next year this concept of

the universe will change because we are going to improve the way we observe it.

This is the way science evolves. It is not stagnant. That is why the sky has no limits. We love Star Trek, we love Star Wars. They go beyond what we can do today, but it is a very good way to imagine our universe. You go to another galaxy, you go to another star system, you may have a planet. There may be a civilisation there.

Do aliens exist? Can you have a planet that looks like Earth? You cannot say no, you cannot say yes, because only science can answer that. When you search, when you look, when you observe, you may find.

Ilias Fernini, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 Aboriginal people, when they look up to the sky here in Australia, see something different to what Europeans see.

We see the Milky Way and talk about the

different constellations. And Aboriginal people see a dark emu, they see the space in between the constellations.

Felicity Ruby, Airspace Tribunal, Sydney, October 2019 The Milky Way has more than 200 billion of stars. The general belief is that we have five to ten planets around every star. And there are galaxies that have 200 planets per star.. So, if we take 200 billion multiplied, let’s say, by five planets, we have 1,000 billion, one trillion of planets in only one galaxy. And today we believe that there are more than 2,000 billion of galaxies, two trillion…

Ilias Fernini, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 I was struck by the fact that when you were younger, the sky was more present, and it is less visible to us living in the cities now. For me growing up in Pakistan, we had a lot of power cuts,

I remember the way our parents entertained us by teaching us the constellations. At that time, you still had just enough darkness in the city.

Nada Raza, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 When I was in Korea, I had a traditional composer as my mentor. He used to complain to me each time we met that the sky used to look different when he was younger. He would say that in the 1960s and 1970s it looked much bluer than it does today. Did it really change?

Or is it his perception that changed?

It became an exercise, a daily exercise, every time we began our conversations, that’s where we would start.

Hasan Hujairi, Sky Forum, Bahrain, March 2019 Starting with the industrial revolution about two hundred years ago, we started having the ability to actually reach up into the sky and into the stars. There have been essentially two impulses that have been shaping and conditioning how this has gone ever since.

The first one is an idealistic impulse, an impulse of unity, of human togetherness. We are going up together in a spirit of exploration and discovery. This is what drove the Wright brothers’ flights, Amelia Earhart’s flights. Only a week or so ago the Emirati astronaut joined his colleagues on the International Space Station in the spirit of unity and togetherness, went up into space to work together with other astronauts.

The second impulse is the reality of who we are. It means mostly conflicts, rivalries, people seeking political power, wealth. All of the things that we have disunity and division about, those are the things that we have brought up with us into the sky. You can see this reflected in a lot of sci-fi that is out there.

Sci-fi writers have commented that the most dangerous thing that humans will encounter when we go up into space is ourselves.

James Lockhart, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 What is the sky? It is a seemingly straightforward question. It is everything that lies above us. To answer this question from a mathematical perspective, I would say that the sky is the infinity. The sky means an endless number. At the same time, the sky a limited resource from an economic and environmental perspective, used until it is depleted or destroyed. And then what do we do? So, yes, it is infinite, if we think about the sky as containing the universe, but when we think about the sky as immediate air, atmosphere, what we breathe in, the limited range, the physical location we live in, it becomes something very different.

Mayasa Al Sowaidi, Sky Forum, Bahrain, March 2019 Humanity have been altering the earth, the air, the atmosphere, for thousands of years and in the last two hundred years we have been altering it at an exponential rate with the industrial revolution, pumping sulphur, nitrogen and carbon into the atmosphere. So much so that

we are causing severe environmental damage, we are causing smog. The great smog in London in 1952 killed between 4,000 and 12,000 people and led to the Clean Air Act. Anson Mackay, Airspace Tribunal, London, September 2018

live in cars and malls. We have restricted not only the access to clean air, but viewing the actual sky, because of how we have forced people to live in these bubbles.

In about a square mile above our heads, there is no less than three billion insects migrating on currents and winds. And those currents and winds also carry nutrients from as far as the Sahara Desert into Europe, and into other parts of the world. So, really, the sky above us is a superhighway well before we put planes up there. Nature has a way of ignoring what we think are borders between countries, between activities, and even the strata that we have. If anybody has gone skydiving, you will know it is very chilly up there, and then when you hit a certain altitude, all the humidity, and all the heat, and all the dust kicks back in. If you know any pilots, they all fly at different strata, and as you keep going into the sky, you move through different gas levels. There is an immense complexity above us.

I am speaking as an architect whose selection of words deals with the sky neither as a space with volumetric quality, nor as a field of great depth.

Although I suppose those readings of the sky would be legitimate and perhaps even architecturally rich, my talk has to do with the sky as a plane against which figures are read.

Perhaps the most common example is the figure-sky relationship – the relationship with the private skies of a courtyard. In this case, the sky acts as a planar entity. It is a cut-out of a page, a cut-out of desaturated blue into which a family may exhaust the smell of frying fish or the noise of everyday life, and from which the sky may enter allowing sunlight to dry clothes, to pickle garlic and tomatoes, and, of course, the rare but eventual rainfall.

Much of social convention at the urban scale was aimed at protecting this family sky. The common knowledge between people, the common laws which governed construction aimed to preserve the sanctity of the courtyard sky. Ensuring that no one would be looking into your sky and seeing your courtyard or sharing that sky with you.

In the past, prior to the Second World War, in Bahrain, the vast majority of the buildings where people lived were close to the ocean to allow for air corridors, wind corridors – natural air conditioning. Alleyways between buildings also acted as air conditioning. They were shaded, making the heat more bearable.

Since, we have turned our society into a bubble society where we are forced to

plane becomes inverted, and the topdown relationship, looking at the figures on the ground, becomes the more dominant one at the urban scale.

The creation of limits, lines and organisations is no longer an action from an imagined vantage point or a conceptual plane. These are no longer drawings on earth from an imagined position, but a real position: from the position of an airplane or military power, such as those of the British Royal Air Force, which conducted many of the first aerial mappings of Bahrain. To this day, the capacity to affect change comes from the sky.

The relationship of a figure to the sky or a figure to the ground is shifting, and in the 2000s, it becomes a question of a figure to the skyline. The sky becomes a vertical plane onto which iconic forms are arrayed, conferring the identity for a city or a nation. In Bahrain, the twinning of towers, meant to mimic sails, creates a skyline of doubles. The skyline is not only a plane onto which buildings are projected but mirrored as well.

With this switch Bahrain’s orientation towards the sky changes from a planometric view of our world, either from the perspective of worm, or from the perspective of bird, to an elevation, looking at the horizon not only for ships, but for identity.

To bring it back to the question of the sky, many of the aspirational qualities that the sky held, I think, have been lost in the changes of the past century.

One Saudi poet writes ‘We awoke from the poverty of the villages and found ourselves in cities. Our windows were filled with the vastness of open sky.’

I think the fantasy of an open sky,

is one that may have existed in the moment between the figure-sky of the courtyard and the moment we live today where the skyline must be occupied by symbols of economic value. We only need to think back to a generation or two ago to remember how incredible it must have been to think of the sky not as a hole in the collective ceiling, but a personal hole in the wall. A personal piece of sky is – although increasingly banal – the greatest promise of modernity. A promise that has become so prevalent that we hardly ever think of looking up.

Ali Karimi, Sky Forum, Bahrain, March 2019 Today, the sky as eminently annexable is no longer a problem for thought but rather a given – the ownership of the sky, its ethical boundaries, its material parameters. Every year almost two hundred satellites are rocket-launched into the sky, various spacecrafts operate around other planets and moons at any given time. Both India and the UAE attempted ambitious projects in 2019, including moon landings and launches of surveillance satellites. And of course, the privatisation of space via Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Amazon’s Blue Origin has produced nearly hundred further satellite launches.

In relation to this, I have a few thoughts on decolonial cosmologies.

What other means do we have philosophically, ethically and culturally to think the sky? For the Argentinian theorist Walter Mignolo, ‘decoloniality is the energy that does not allow the operation of the logic of coloniality nor believes the fairy tales of the rhetoric of modernity.’

Decolonising space can thus not be a project to further nationalist visions or a new space race but one that requires both international and intranational vision. For the Peruvian sociologist Anibal Quijano, decolonial cosmology might be the unlearning of the hubris that says one specific version of the cosmos is universal. In this case, decolonising the cosmos would require a multi-sited, multi-ethnic approach. For Begum Rokeya, whose feminist dream written in 1905 has flying cars and solar visions, but insists that the men are shut indoors, a new cosmology would require thinking of gender. Is a non-masculinist vision of the cosmopolis possible?

Given the contemporary context in which spaces, skies and stars can no longer be thought as a singular universe or universal, nor it is desirable to sliver them into ever more narrow shards of nations, companies and individuals, can we think of Mignolo’s pluriverse? If the

universe as a concept has a monopolistic singular voice – uni-, what if we consider the value of space in its muti-versality and pluri-versality, furthering only the values of reciprocity, conviviality and mutuality? What are the implications for the symbolic value and potential of sky-as-trope if we do not?

Toral Gajarawala, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 I experienced the siege of Sarajevo during its first eighteen months. I was working as a young journalist with international war correspondents. The debate around satellites and the imagery that we receive from them was really important for the war in Bosnia. It was a commercial satellite that captured the pictures of mass graves after the genocide had been committed in Srebrenica.

The satellites were also very important, because it was the only way of transmitting the truth as I saw it then. We were

transmitting the images and the news from Bosnia. And I truly believed that, if we told the world the truth, the world would act. That action actually did come, and it did come in a very terrifying form, from the air. It was on my birthday, and I remember it very clearly, May 1993.

A no-fly zone was declared and policed over the skies of Bosnia by the NATO troops. There was a relief, but also it was the most terrifying experience with these jets flying above the city of Sarajevo and breaking the sound barrier.

And that was supposed to make us feel safe. But somehow it did not. And it did not because it was a reminder of all other dangers that were flying in.

And all these dangers were very much associated with sound. The sound of shelling and bombing is very scary.

There is this saying and superstition

that we had during the war in Bosnia that you are not going to hear the one that is going to hit you. But all the other ones that you are hearing are terrifying and damaging you for the rest of your life.

Zrinka Bralo, Airspace Tribunal, London, September 2018 I was eight years old at the time, and before that time the sky was this vast space above my head, full of legends, fairy tales and sci-fi stories. A place of dreaming, a place that did not hold fear.

On that day, in 1986, a very sunny day in May, I was at school and we were all called to the courtyard, given iodine drops on a tablespoon of sugar and sent home. From that moment on, the sky completely changed for me. There was fear introduced to everything that was above us. It was the day when the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded and sent a nuclear

cloud around the world. Something that was not visible. Something that came down from the beautiful blue sky on us.

From that moment on, the sky almost closed on me, because of the fear of nuclear radiation, while, at the same time, it expanded, because something from very far away influenced where I was, an event, an accident that happened in one place in the world, travelled all around the globe. Perhaps remnants of that event are still with us somewhere in the atmosphere.

Marta Michalowska, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 I was five or six at the time. I remember that I was just sitting and playing while my mom was in a distance, and then, all of a sudden, the house shook. The windows broke and the shuttered glass came in with a big wave. My mom just grabbed me and ran downstairs. She said, ‘it’s a chemical bomb, it’s a chemical bomb.’

My mom, she was pretty young when the bombing happened, maybe thirty. I remember that she got very stressed because her kids were not there. She thought that it was a chemical bomb. She wanted to take everyone to shower and make sure we can breathe properly. It happened around the time when Iraq used chemical weapons in the Kurdish area. It was on the news. They showed dead people, and everybody was afraid that they would use them in Tehran or other big cities.

We had a basement and she was hosting people there that were injured or distressed and this I think added to her

stress. She started taking anti-depressants soon after the bombardment and she took them forever. The bombardment was the trigger for her depression.

She lost her brother and her brother-inlaw in the war too.

Sara Mir, Sydney, October 2019 I think when we talk about past, we tend to think about deep past rather than recent past. In my research, it was fascinating to look at the more recent past that has been forgotten and excavate aporias and lacunae in our memories.

There are the ancient knowledges, but there are also more modest, everyday knowledges, which are passed down from father to son, or from grandparents to grandchildren, in local stories, in local mythologies that we hear, which do not have to be these grand narratives, but can be simple poems for memorising the positions of the stars. I feel that these micronarratives and the preservation of them is something that we in the artistic and cultural world are able to do.

We are able to include personal conversations in the way that we do artistic and curatorial research. In my practice, that is one of the methodologies that I found quite useful – you start from your own circle, and then broaden out from there.

We have different kinds of winds.

The best one is from the west, which we call al-Gharbi. Algharb means the west.

There is also al-Khor, a wind coming from the coast. It is always a wet wind.

From the north, Shamal can take all the good things from us. We do not like that one. It comes from Rub’ al Khali, the Empty Quarter, the land of legends and fairy tales. There is nothing there, no life, not even insects. The softest sand is there. If you step there, you can get sucked in. In many of our legends, heroes went there to meet the King of the Jinns and some of them won. It is always windy in the Empty Quarter.

That is why the Arabs here, when we go to desert, we put on kohl, like mascara but grey, to protect our eyes from the dust. If you go to the desert, to the Bedouins, you always put it on your eyes.

When I was a child, I played with a kite. I remember there was a season for the kites, because of wind. And we needed wind to send kites into the sky. We would make kites with big tails and strong rope. Sometimes the rope would break, and the kite would go up into the sky until it disappeared.

It was glorious, even if you were sad.

Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Sharjah, April 2019 As an astronomer, if I would like to see Earth’s future, I look not very far away, at Venus, the second planet. It is hell. It has ninety-six per cent of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere, the hottest planet in the whole solar system. It is a dead world.

Then, I would go and look at Mars. Mars, as far as we believe in our research, was a living planet. It had water. Something

happened to it. It lost its atmosphere, so now water cannot exist there as liquid.

It is as vapour and ice. Venus has lost its life. Mars has lost its life. And we are in between. We are in what you call the life zone, about 150 million kilometres from the sun, where water can still stay liquid.

Ilias Fernini, Sky Forum, Sharjah, October 2019 We have few landmarks on earth here compared with other places around the world. Our landscape is mostly desert.

There are not many trees or high mountains, so our landmarks are in the sky, the stars. We draw maps of the sky, because we use the stars for agriculture, for directions. There has always been a connection between us and the sky. We measure love by the sky. All the good things come from up there, as well as the scary ones. It is a world, a complete world.

Nick Grief

I have always been fascinated by aeroplanes and airspace.

I grew up in south Lincolnshire, near The Wash on the east coast of England. I loved watching planes flying in the vast open skies above the Fens. They were mainly light aircraft – there were no airways over that part of the country. There were several military airfields, though, and sometimes I watched military planes practising their bombing runs over the local marshes. The wider implications of those activities did not occur to me then.

When I was about nine years old, one of my father’s friends gave me an Airband radio so that I could listen (legally!) to communications between civilian pilots and air traffic controllers.

He owned a de Havilland DH.84 Dragon (G-ACIT), built in 1933, which he flew from a field on his Northamptonshire farm. I went up in it with him once or twice. When my family flew abroad on holiday, I was often lucky to visit the flight deck during the flight. I collected aeronautical charts and learned about radio beacons, air navigation and Flight Information Regions, and about the Organised Track System over the North Atlantic.

I was also fascinated by space travel. I remember Telstar, a pop record named after a communications satellite launched in 1962, and, of course, the first moon landing in July 1969. One of my favourite memories is of the Apollo 8 mission in December 1968, the first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth’s orbit, orbit the Moon and return. It was Apollo 8 which gave us that wonderful photograph of Earthrise.

Studying law at the University of Kent in the mid-1970s, I was particularly interested in international law. It was taught

by Dr John Kish who had written a book called The Law of International Spaces (1973) which was based on his Cambridge PhD thesis. I discovered later that John, who was born János Kiss in Budapest in 1936, had survived the Holocaust and lectured at the University of Budapest, was a legal adviser to the Hungarian Navy and participated in international conferences on maritime law and space law before emigrating to the UK in 1966. Through John’s teaching and writing, I developed a keen interest in the legal regimes of airspace and outer space, and in the delimitation of those spaces. It was a consuming passion. I remember lying on a beach looking up at the sky and thinking: ‘somewhere up there is the boundary between airspace and outer space.’

After my first degree, I remained at Kent to begin my PhD under John Kish’s supervision on Public International Law in the Airspace of the High Seas, later published by Martinus Nijhoff in their Air and Space Law series. My doctoral thesis combined my passion for international law with my fascination with airspace.

When I began teaching international law at the University of Exeter in 1979, I made sure that the legal regimes of airspace and outer space were part of the syllabus. I loved teaching those subjects. Now, over forty years later, back at Kent where my academic journey began, the wheel has come full circle. It is a joy to be collaborating with my artist colleague Shona Illingworth on a law-art project called the Airspace Tribunal, designed to stimulate debate about airspace and how it is used, and contributing to her video and sound installation Topologies of Air. Relationships with the sky run deep across cultures, spaces and time. The sky can teach us about the cosmos and how the universe functions. It teaches us perspective. The quotation attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, ‘once you have tasted the taste of sky, you will forever look up,’ may have been intended to express his fascination with flight but it also captures the vital, life-enhancing nature of our relationship with the sky.

That relationship is all too easily fractured. A few years ago, I was a member of the legal team which represented the Marshall Islands in nuclear disarmament cases before the International Court of Justice. From 1946 to 1958, while under UN trusteeship, the Marshall Islands was the location of repeated nuclear weapons testing by the United States. I will never forget Tony deBrum, the country’s former Foreign Minister, telling the Court how, on Rongelap Atoll in March 1954, children played in the radioactive fallout that rained from the sky, thinking it was snow…

There is something very special about having the freedom to look up at the sky without feeling threatened. In the face of growing commercial and military exploitation of technology in airspace and outer space, we must do all we can to protect this freedom and preserve it for future generations.

Shona Illingworth I think there are several beginnings. The first is my experience of growing up on the edge of a major NATO live bombing range on the north west corner of Scotland. This was during the 1970s and at the time we were cut off from the rest of the world geographically, living in a very remote, sparsely populated area – in a wild landscape. No trees, very little grass, just the mountains, the sea and a big sky.

There was a striking contrast between that sense of being a small person under this vast sky and the sudden sound of jets screeching through the air, cutting through it, making the sky no longer infinite and endless, but controlled, completely belonging to the military overhead. I felt a sense of a physical limitation placed above me by jets flying low and the deafening sound of the thousand-pound live bombs they dropped.

I think the experience of that very dramatic contrast between an open and a controlled sky was probably the beginning of this project.

The next beginning is marked by two of my earlier works. In 2009, I completed Balnakiel, a single-screen film, shot in and around the abandoned military barracks where I grew up. This work focused on the role memory, perception and social tensions play in how landscape is constructed, as well as how the military’s use of landscape and sky affect the civilian population. Following this, while working on my three-screen installation Lesions in the Landscape (2015), I spent time on the remote, depopulated volcanic islands of St Kilda forty miles west off the Outer Hebrides. In that work, I explored how amnesia shapes not only the present but also how it affects the ability to imagine the future.

I wanted to question the narratives constructed about St Kilda as an isolated outcrop of islands inhabited by people who exist outside of time, outside of modernity.

Those narratives exclude the fact that St Kilda is now at the centre of a major missile and weapons testing range.

I see it is a form of amnesia.

In Lesions in the Landscape, the upper perimeter of that landscape is the International Space Station that is orbiting above, along with countless satellites, marking another edge, another limit.

I also explored the contrast between the construction of that sky as part of a romantic, oceanic sublime and the military instrumentalisation of that space. QinetiQ, the company that runs the weapons testing range there describes that sky as a sanitised airspace, with unlimited altitude – an empty void that can be used without interruption for complex weapons testing.

In 2012, I was invited to an artist residency by Sea Change at Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre in the Outer Hebrides, which focused on the environmental approaches to climate change. I was interested in exploring how the sky was being commodified and territorialised by business and the military, for example through building large commercial wind farms and extending the weapons testing range. I considered this in relation to the cultural and historical relationships people had to the sky there.

This residency informed a lot of my early thinking for Topologies of Air. TWP It seems that this project has a very long history and draws on your lived experience as if you were trying to unpick an early memory or a recurring sensation connected with the space above your head.

SI I suppose what I am describing is something that also comes from experience that is embodied, a deep experience that exists almost outside of conscious memory. I remember what it is like to have the sky above you completely dominated by a military presence that could appear suddenly out of nowhere, with the shattering sound of jets flying very low to the ground in a show of force.

When I was twelve or thirteen years old, I became more politically aware. This was during the Cold War and I was surrounded by a pervasive sense of anxiety that we could be annihilated at any moment by an atomic bomb. In fact, my parents’ choice to move to a remote location was partially driven by the wish to find a place to live peacefully away from those pressures.

The consciousness that an attack could come suddenly out of the sky and just wipe you out without warning was very present. My friend Anson Mackay and I set up a Schools Against the Bomb campaign at school. It was a very tense time when even this small, local action was seen on wider political terms.

Visiting Hiroshima all these years later reminded me of those early campaigns. It was an emotional and disturbing experience for me, and important when talking with survivors there, especially in the context of current escalating global threats, including the continued development of nuclear weapons.

TWP Now that we have gone through the genesis of this project, maybe we could talk a little bit about why you think it is important to speak about the airspace, the sky, the weather, and all the issues surrounding them at this very moment?

SI Over the last hundred years humans have been radically transforming airspace. These changes are chemical, geopolitical, military, as well as psychological. They are also accelerating and growing in complexity due to developments in technology, while, at the same time, we are facing catastrophic climate crisis.

In addition to conflicts driven by power struggles between the major nation states, the major economic blocks, we are also facing the colonisation of airspace and outer space for both military and commercial advantage. We are witnessing accelerating global disparity of power between those that are occupying the space above, controlling the space above, and billions of us on the ground.

TWP And this is impacting our lives on every level.

SI Certainly. I also think that we are facing a cultural challenge, or perhaps a socio-political problem, with the development of technology and the use of it to dominate that space. The narratives around that technology come from a perspective of privilege, and they construct that space as masculine, sanitised and disconnected. We need to create

opportunities for other dialogues, other interactions, other encounters. We need to challenge the hierarchies of knowledge at play and consider how we discuss the future, how we shape an idea of the future which, I think, should include different cosmologies, experiences, knowledges and world views.

I have worked for many years looking at memory, and memory’s importance in how we imagine the future, how it is absolutely fundamental to the futures that we can imagine as individuals and as societies. As a consequence, if we do not draw on a diversity of memory and perspective, we will significantly limit the possible imaginings of the future.

The current visions of the future of outer space and airspace are very narrow, because the prevailing base from which they are being projected is limited. They do not include, for instance, the many different cosmologies that have deep roots in cultures, in people’s understanding of being, in their relationship to the sky and their sense of what the sky is and why it is important.

TWP The questions around air, airspace and outer space and their use are probably not very present in most people’s consciousness. Distinct issues such as the Australian fires, the extreme air pollution in major cities around the world, the challenges to privacy with the exponential increase in the use of satellites and so on and so forth, are being discussed but separately.

SI I would differentiate between atmosphere and airspace.

Airspace is defined within legal terms in which the sky is divided into territorial zones or zones of control, every state has sovereignty over the airspace above its territory.

Atmosphere doesn’t conform to those territorially defined boundaries.

There is an increasing awareness that what we are discussing are global problems which affect all of us, but the picture is very different depending on where you live, who you are and how much power you have to change things.

The Airspace Tribunal, established in collaboration with Nick Grief, which explores our relationship to airspace from the perspective of human rights, and the Sky Forums which look at our changing relationship to the sky from

geopolitical, cultural and environmental perspectives, are part of the process of creating Topologies of Air. These international platforms bring many different perspectives into dialogue. For instance, someone who has dedicated their working life to researching climate change can discuss the risks of geo-engineering, which proposes to control climate change through technological interventions, with an expert in human rights. Somebody who is developing the use of satellite data to identify slavery on the ground can have a discussion with a media sociologist who is investigating the impact of satellite surveillance on human lives and freedoms, and with someone who has lived with the threat of being physically attacked from the air.

TWP It seems crucial to draw attention to what is happening above our heads. The oceans have been overlooked for a very long time, and little attention was given to their importance to the equilibrium of the whole planet, all the life on it including that on the land.

SI Yes, you are right, the attention is predominantly on what is happening on the ground.

The sky is a complicated space but in the modernist period, in the West in any case, there has been a secular idea of the sky as a space of projection, an open and free space. This view can obscure other ways of experiencing or thinking about the sky.

TWP Yes. But it certainly is not empty and void.

SI No, not at all. And it has never been. For example, people have spoken about the sky not as a singular entity, while others see it as a place of spirits, or a place that is full of presences, where there are millions and millions of entities.

These are very different cosmologies, very different understandings of how you move about and inhabit a space. It is the opposite of instrumentalising the sky.

TWP In the West, perhaps this has something to do with invisibility. To oversimplify, if it cannot be seen, it does not exist. It is easy to not give much thought to something that has not a visual presence.

SI I think that introduces a very interesting question about the ocular, about how and what we see, and what we expect to see. For many people sight is not the only sense that makes things visible, or makes presence known. One also needs to make a distinction between the way in which things are described and presented and the way they are felt. For instance, many people would say that they feel an atmosphere of a place.

Technology now has long gone beyond focusing on what is visible to the human eye. It is geared to look for things that we cannot see. We are making instruments to make them apparent and I am very interested in the language, perspectives and images that emerge from this process, but this is not the only way to understand the world.

TWP This must complicate things for a visual artist?

SI I think it makes it interesting.

TWP You work in equal measure with sound and image, but the image is what, in a way, people first experience as they walk into the gallery space.

SI For me sound is as important as image, it creates a changing atmosphere, it is important to how you move people not just intellectually or conceptually, but also physically in space, in the installation. My films and installations include many voices and layers of sound. They are intended to operate on multiple levels and not just the visual.

TWP Your work addresses people on the emotional level, on the intellectual level, stimulates them visually and aurally, but lets them make their own interpretation, ask their own questions. Perhaps we can go one step back and think a little bit about the experience of making Topologies of Air across in different places around the world and what you encountered by talking to different people, filming in different places, and how that was informing and shaping the work as it was being made.

SI It has been very important for me to spend time in other places. It has been a process of exploration, but also exploration in dialogue with people. The making of the work has been a process of intense listening and thinking.

Not just listening to what people are saying but trying to think about the implications of what they are talking about in relation to the many other conversations that are taking place throughout this project. For instance, there have been discussions about the incredible penetration of surveillance technology into the lives of people, and how that is becoming even more invasive through biometric profiling, right down to your particular gait as seen from a satellite. Combining all of this data and information on a person, increasingly using artificial intelligence, algorithms create what is called a pattern of life. At the centre of this is a question of being, which also affects how we think about ways to protect people from harm or exploitation from above. And it is a question of how we understand who we are and what we are, and how we maintain a sense of being a person, an individual, a human being, not just a set of information or data points.

TWP That mostly we have provided ourselves.

SI Yes, exactly, because we are in a system, we need to understand fully the impact of data and control.

TWP Sometimes the system is convenient for us, so we keep our GPS tracking on, for example.

SI Not only that, by giving out our data which is used to construct patterns of life, we are inadvertently exposing others who do not conform to them.

TWP I am not doing anything wrong, I have nothing to hide, therefore I should not be worried about providing my data.

SI Exactly. We are also contributing to the profiling that will expose others.

TWP The problem with this technology is that a lot of these things are happening at such a pace that there has not been a possibility to reflect whether this is something that we should be questioning, something we should keep at bay. It has just happened. We are facing the fact that most people’s lives are connected to a satellite all day long, at every waking hour, and at night. And this has just happened, happened in the last decade, almost while we were not paying attention.

SI The other thing that is profoundly important, I think, is that we are struggling to find a language to talk about it, we are struggling to find a way of picturing what this looks like, we are struggling to find a way of imagining how it could be in any other way, because we are using the old language of visibility, as you pointed out earlier. We are using the old language of nation state borders that can be defended.

People now are struggling to navigate the use of terms conflict and war in the face of these rapid technological developments. There is now what is described as a grey zone within the cyber realms of manipulation, control and power.

TWP In a fundamental way, through the technologies that we are now using we are ultimately physically connected to the outer space.

SI Yes, completely.

TWP Outer space is not an abstract, there is a physical link for most people who carry a mobile device in their pocket, they are physically connected to that space.

SI Absolutely. And this also has a profound impact on our night sky which is becoming more and more populated by satellites.

Some of those small satellites last only about a year or eighteen months and they are supposed to break up, disintegrate and disappear, but orbits in outer space are becoming full of rubbish. Our material presence there is caused by our increasing reliance on connectivity, which is understood as immaterial, invisible, but relies on vast amounts of hardware.

TWP The cloud.

SI Yes, exactly.

TWP A heavy data centre somewhere in a desert connected to a network of satellites.

SI Exactly.

TWP Using more energy than a mid-sized city.

SI That material infrastructure is vulnerable. Hence increasing anxiety, increasing investment in potential outer space war. There is a shift from the outer space being understood as a commons, towards that space becoming a site of power struggle and conflict.

TWP I think we have covered quite a lot of ground. What would you like people to take away from experiencing the work, and what kind of questions you would like to leave them with?

SI I would like people to consider that it is important that the sky is not dominated and utilised and controlled from a singular perspective, for a singular set of objectives. I would like to question whether representations of the sky as empty and boundless deny the many different ways it is experienced and understood across different cultures and, at the same time, conceal what is going on there. With the accelerating transformations that we have just discussed, it is crucial to create space for new discussions across different knowledges and representations, to challenge the growing disparity of power, and to consider how different futures could be both imagined and made possible.

‫وابينغ بروجكت أنت تعملين على قدم المساواة مع الصوت والصورة‬ ‫ولكن بطريقة ما‪ ،‬فإن الصورة هي ما يواجهها الناس‬ ‫أوال أثناء دخولهم إلى مساحة المعرض‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جوا‬ ‫شونا بالنسبة لي الصوت ذات نفس أهمية الصورة‪ ،‬فهو يخلق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مهما في تحريك مشاعر األشخاص ليس فقط‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫متغيرا ويلعب‬ ‫أيضا في الفضاء جسدياً‬ ‫من الناحية الفكرية أو المفاهيمية‪ ،‬بل ً‬ ‫وفي المعرض التركيبي‪ .‬تشمل أفالمي ومعارضي التركيبية العديد‬ ‫من األصوات وطبقات الصوت‪ .‬أنها تهدف إلى العمل على‬ ‫مستويات متعددة وليس فقط البصرية‪.‬‬ ‫وابينغ بروجكت يخاطب عملك األشخاص على المستوى العاطفي‬ ‫وسمعيا‪ ،‬لكنه يتيح لهم‬ ‫بصريا‬ ‫والفكري ويحفزهم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫استمداد تفسيرهم الخاص وطرح أسئلتهم الخاصة‪ .‬ربما‬ ‫قليال في‬ ‫يمكننا تراجع خطوة واحدة إلى وراء والتفكير‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تجربة إبداع طوبولوجيا الهواء في أماكن مختلفة حول‬ ‫العالم وما واجهتيه من خالل التحدث مع أشخاص‬ ‫مختلفين والتصوير في أماكن مختلفة‪ ،‬وكيف كانت تلك‬ ‫التجارب ساهمت في العمل وتشكيله كما كان يجري‪.‬‬ ‫جدا بالنسبة لي قضاء بعض الوقت في أماكن‬ ‫شونا لقد كان من المهم ً‬ ‫أيضا عملية استكشاف‬ ‫مختلفة‪ .‬فكانت عملية استكشاف‪ ،‬ولكن ً‬ ‫في حوار مع الناس‪ .‬كان إبداع العمل عبارة عن عملية استماع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫دقيق وتفكير وليس فقط االستماع إلى ما يقوله الناس بل‬ ‫محاولة التفكير في اآلثار المترتبة على ما يتحدثون عنه فيما يتعلق‬ ‫بالعديد من المحادثات األخرى التي تجري خالل هذا المشروع‪.‬‬ ‫على سبيل المثال‪ ،‬كانت هناك مناقشات حول االختراق المذهل‬ ‫لتكنولوجيا المراقبة في حياة الناس وكيف أصبحت ذلك أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اجتياحا من خالل تحديد سمات األشخاص البيومتري‪ ،‬وحتى بما‬ ‫في ذلك مشيتك الخاصة كما يظهر من قمر صناعي‪ .‬تخلق‬ ‫الخوارزميات ما يسمى نمط الحياة من خالل الجمع بين كل هذه‬ ‫البيانات والمعلومات عن شخص ما باستخدام الذكاء االصطناعي‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫بشكل متزايد‪ .‬في قلب هذا هناك مسألة الوجود التي تؤثر ً‬ ‫على كيفية تفكيرنا في طرق حماية األشخاص من األذى أو‬ ‫االستغالل من األعلى‪ .‬إنها مسألة كيف نفهم من نحن وما نحن‬ ‫‪ ،‬وكيف نحافظ على الشعور بأننا شخص وفرد وإنسان وليس‬ ‫مجرد مجموعة من المعلومات أو نقاط البيانات‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫غالبا أنفسنا‪.‬‬ ‫وابينغ بروجكت وفي الحقيقة قدمناها‬ ‫شونا نعم‪ ،‬بالضبط‪ ،‬ألننا داخل نظام ونحتاج إلى‬ ‫الفهم بشكل كامل تأثير البيانات والتحكم‪.‬‬

‫شونا إيلينغوورث‬ ‫أعتقد أن هناك عدة بدايات وأولها هي تجربتي في قضاء طفولتي‬ ‫على حافة ميدان القصف قيد االستعمال لمنظمة حلف شمال‬ ‫األطلسي في الركن الشمالي الغربي من اسكتلندا‪ .‬كان ذلك‬ ‫الوقت خالل سبعينيات القرن الماضي‪ ،‬وكنا معزولين عن بقية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جغرافيا كما كنا نعيش في منطقة نائية للغاية ذات كثافة‬ ‫العالم‬ ‫سكانية منخفضة في منظر طبيعي بري‪ .‬لم تكن هناك أشجار‬ ‫جدا من العشب‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى الجبال‬ ‫وفقط كان هناك القليل ً‬ ‫والبحر والسماء الكبيرة‪.‬‬ ‫كان هناك تناقض صارخ بين هذا اإلحساس بأنك شخص‬ ‫صغير تحت السماء الشاسعة والصوت المفاجئ للطائرات التي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫صريرا في الهواء وتقتحمها مما يجعل السماء لم تعد‬ ‫كانت تطلق‬ ‫ال نهائية وغير محدودة‪ ،‬بل خاضعة للسيطرة وتنتمي بالكامل إلى‬ ‫القوات الجوية‪ .‬شعرت بإحساس من وجود قيود جسدية وضعت‬ ‫فوقي بواسطة طائرات تحلق على ارتفاع منخفض وصوت يصم‬ ‫من القنابل الحية تزن ‪ 500‬كيلو جرام التي كانت تسقطها‪.‬‬ ‫أعتقد أن تجربة هذا التناقض الهائل للغاية بين السماء‬ ‫المفتوحة والسماء الخاضعة للسيطرة ربما كانت بداية هذا‬ ‫المشروع‪.‬‬ ‫تتميز البداية التالية باثنين من أعمالي السابقة‪ .‬في عام ‪2009‬‬ ‫‪ ،‬أكملت فيلم "بالناكيل" ‪ ،‬وهو فيلم بشاشة واحدة ‪ ،‬تم تصويره‬ ‫قضيت طفولتي‪.‬‬ ‫داخل وحول الثكنات العسكرية المهجورة حيث‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ركز هذا العمل على الدور الذي تلعبه الذاكرة والتصور والتوترات‬ ‫االجتماعية في بناء المناظر الطبيعية‪ ،‬وكذلك كيف يؤثر استخدام‬ ‫الجيش للمناظر الطبيعية والسماء على السكان المدنيين‪ .‬بعد ذلك‬ ‫وأثناء العمل على معرضي التركيبي على ثالث شاشات‪" ،‬الجرح في‬ ‫المناظر الطبيعية" (‪ ، )2015‬قضيت وقتً ا في الجزر البركانية النائية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كيلومترا غرب الهيبريديس الخارجية‪.‬‬ ‫في سان كيلدا على بعد ستين‬ ‫أستعرض في هذا العمل كيف يشكل فقدان الذاكرة ليس فقط‬ ‫أيضا يؤثر على القدرة على تخيل المستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫الحاضر بل ً‬

‫لطالما كنت مفتون بالطائرات والمجال الجوي‪ .‬قضيت طفولتي في‬ ‫جنوب لينكولنشاير بالقرب من ذا واش على الساحل الشرقي إلنجلترا‪.‬‬ ‫كنت أحب مشاهدة الطائرات التي حلقت في سماء مفتوحة وشاسعة‬ ‫فوق المستنقعات‪ .‬كانت أغلبيتها طائرات خفيفة فلم تكن هناك خطوط‬ ‫جوية فوق هذا الجزء من البالد لكن كان هناك العديد من مهابط الطائرات‬ ‫العسكرية‪ ،‬وفي بعض األحيان شاهدت الطائرات العسكرية تمارس‬ ‫حركات الطائرة للقصف على األهوار المحلية‪ .‬ولم تخطر على بالي آنذاك‬ ‫اآلثار األوسع لتلك األنشطة‪.‬‬ ‫عندما كان عمري حوالي تسع سنوات‪ ،‬أعطاني أحد أصدقاء والدي‬ ‫(قانونيا!) إلى االتصاالت بين‬ ‫راديو أرباند حتى أتمكن من االستماع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الطيارين المدنيين ومراقبي الحركة الجوية‪ .‬كان يمتلك طائرة دي هافيالند‬ ‫يطيرها‬ ‫دي أه دراغون (جي‪-‬أسيت) التي بنيت في عام ‪ 1933‬والتي كان‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من حقل في مزرعته في محافظة نورثهامبتونشاير وصعدت معه فيها‬ ‫مرة أو مرتين‪ .‬عندما سافرنا أنا وعائلتي إلى الخارج لقضاء إجازة‪ ،‬كنت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جمعت‬ ‫محظوظا في الكثير من األحيان لزيارة غرفة التحكم أثناء الرحلة‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وتعرفت على االرشادية الراديوية والمالحة الجوية ومناطق‬ ‫خرائط الطيران‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫معلومات الطيران ونظام المسارات المنظم فوق شمال األطلسي‪.‬‬ ‫أيضا بالسفر إلى الفضاء وأتذكر تالستار وهي أسطوانة‬ ‫كنت مفتون ً‬ ‫شعبية سميت على اسم قمر صناعي لالتصاالت تم إطالقه في عام‬ ‫‪ ،1962‬وبالطبع أتذكر أول هبوط على القمر في يوليو ‪ .1969‬وإحدى‬ ‫ذكرياتي المفضلة هي مهمة أبولو ‪ 8‬في ديسمبر ‪ ،1968‬وكانت أول‬ ‫مركبة فضائية مع طاقم على المتن خرجت من مدار األرض‪ ،‬دارت حول‬ ‫القمر ورجعت‪ .‬وكانت أبولو ‪ 8‬المهمة التي زودتنا بتلك الصورة الرائعة‬ ‫"شروق األرض"‪.‬‬ ‫لقد درست القانون في جامعة كنت في منتصف السبعينيات ‪،‬‬ ‫وكنت مهتم بشكل خاص بالقانون الدولي‪ .‬قام بتدريسها الدكتور جون‬

‫وهي المعارف اليومية التي تنتقل من األب‬ ‫إلى االبن أو من األجداد إلى األحفاد في‬ ‫القصص المحلية واألساطير المحلية التي‬ ‫نسمعها‪ ،‬والتي ال يجب أن تكون روايات‬ ‫عظيمة‪ ،‬بل يمكن أن تكون قصائد بسيطة‬ ‫لحفظ مواقف النجوم‪ .‬أشعر بأن هذه‬ ‫القصص الصغيرة والدقيقة والمحافظة عليها‬ ‫شيء يمكننا في العالم الفني والثقافي القيام‬ ‫به‪ .‬نحن قادرون على تضمين المحادثات‬ ‫الشخصية بالطريقة التي نقوم بها بالبحث‬ ‫الفني والمشرف‪ .‬ووجدت في ممارستي أنها‬ ‫جدا ‪ -‬فتبدأ‬ ‫هذه واحدة من المنهجيات المفيدة ً‬ ‫من دائرتك الخاصة‪ ،‬ثم تتوسع من هذه‬ ‫النقطة‪.‬‬ ‫ندى رضا‪ ،‬منتدى سكاي فوروم‪،‬‬ ‫الشارقة‪ ،‬شهر أكتوبر ‪2019‬‬

‫دية الكونية لميجنولو؟ إذا كان‬ ‫مفهوم التَ َع ُّد ّ‬ ‫للكون كمفهوم صوت احتكاري وفريد ‪ -‬أي‬ ‫أحادي‪ .‬فماذا سيكون لو أخذنا في االعتبار قيمة‬ ‫الفضاء كمتعددة االستخدام مما يعزز فقط قيم‬ ‫المعاملة بالمثل وشعور البهجة والمتبادل؟ ما‬ ‫هي اآلثار المترتبة على القيمة الرمزية وإمكانات‬ ‫السماء المجازية إذا لم نفعل ذلك؟‬ ‫تورال جاجارواال‪ ،‬منتدى سكاي فوروم‪،‬‬ ‫الشارقة‪ ،‬شهر أكتوبر ‪2019‬‬ ‫لقد واجهت حصار سراييفو خالل الثمانية عشر‬ ‫شهرا األولى بينما كنت أعمل كصحفي شاب‬ ‫مع مراسلي الحرب الدوليين‪ .‬الجدل حول‬ ‫األقمار الصناعية والصور التي نتلقاها منها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قمرا‬ ‫مهما للغاية للحرب في البوسنة‪ .‬كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تجاريا التقط صور المقابر الجماعية بعد‬ ‫صناعيا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ارتكاب اإلبادة الجماعية في سريبرينيتسا‪.‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى ذلك كانت األقمار الصناعية‬ ‫جدا ألنها كانت الطريقة الوحيدة لنقل‬ ‫مهمة ً‬ ‫الحقيقة كما رأيتها في ذلك الوقت‪ .‬فكنا ننقل‬ ‫اعتقدت‬ ‫فعال‬ ‫الصور واألخبار من البوسنة وأنا‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أنه إذا أخبرنا العالم بالحقيقة‪ ،‬فسيعمل العالم‪.‬‬ ‫ولقد حدث هذا العمل بالفعل‪ ،‬وجاء في‬ ‫طريقة مرعبة للغاية‪ ،‬وكانت من الهواء‪ .‬كان‬ ‫يوم عيد ميالدي‪ ،‬وأتذكره بوضوح تام‪ ،‬فكان‬ ‫في شهر أيار ‪ /‬مايو في العام ‪ .1993‬أعلنت‬ ‫قوات حلف شمال األطلسي منطقة حظر‬ ‫الطيران وتمت مراقبتها على سماء البوسنة‪.‬‬ ‫بفضل هذا‪ ،‬كان هناك إحساس من االرتياح‪،‬‬ ‫رعبا مع هذه‬ ‫لكنها كانت ً‬ ‫أيضا التجربة األكثر ً‬ ‫الطائرات التي كانت تحلق فوق مدينة سراييفو‬ ‫وتكسر حاجز الصوت‪ .‬وكان من المفترض أن‬ ‫يجعلنا نشعر باألمان لكن بطريقة ما لم يفعل‬ ‫ذلك ألنه كان بمثابة تذكير بجميع األخطار‬ ‫األخرى التي كانت تطير وتقترب منا‪ .‬وكانت‬ ‫كل هذه األخطار مرتبطة إلى حد كبير بالصوت‪،‬‬ ‫فمثال صوت القصف مخيف للغاية‪ .‬وهناك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫القول والخرافة التي كنا نقولها خالل الحرب‬ ‫في البوسنة بأنك لن تسمع القصف الذي‬ ‫‪74‬‬

‫سيقتلك‪ .‬لكن جميع عمليات القصف األخرى‬ ‫التي تسمعها مرعبة وتضر بك لبقية حياتك‪.‬‬ ‫زرينكا برالو‪ ،‬محكمة المجال الجوي‪ ،‬لندن‪،‬‬ ‫شهر سبتمبر ‪2018‬‬ ‫كنت في الثامنة من عمري في ذلك الوقت‪،‬‬ ‫وقبل ذلك الوقت كانت السماء مساحة‬ ‫شاسعة فوق رأسي‪ ،‬مليئة باألساطير‬ ‫والحكايات الخيالية وقصص الخيال العلمي‪.‬‬ ‫وكانت مكان الحلم‪ ،‬وهو المكان الذي ال يحمل‬ ‫الخوف‪ .‬في ذلك اليوم في عام ‪ ،1986‬وكان‬ ‫جدا في شهر مايو‪ ،‬كنت في‬ ‫يوم مشمس ً‬ ‫جميعا الذهاب إلى‬ ‫بنا‬ ‫الطلب‬ ‫المدرسة وتم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الفناء وأعطونا قطرات اليود على ملعقة كبيرة‬ ‫من السكر وإرسالها إلى المنزل‪ .‬منذ تلك‬ ‫تماما‪ .‬كانوا‬ ‫اللحظة‪ ،‬تغير معنى السماء لي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يقدمون الخوف لكل ما كان فوقنا‪ .‬كان ذلك‬ ‫اليوم الذي انفجرت فيه محطة تشيرنوبيل‬ ‫للطاقة النووية في أوكرانيا وأرسلت سحابة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شيئا‬ ‫نووية في جميع أنحاء العالم‪ .‬وهذا كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وشيئا نزل من السماء الزرقاء‬ ‫مرئيا‬ ‫لم يكن‬ ‫فصاعدا‪ ،‬تقريباً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الجميلة علينا‪ .‬منذ تلك اللحظة‬ ‫أغلقت علي السماء بسبب الخوف من‬ ‫اإلشعاع النووي‪ ،‬بينما توسعت في الوقت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا قد أثر على‬ ‫نفسه‪ ،‬ألن‬ ‫شيئا ما من بعيد ً‬ ‫مكاني وهذا الحدث حادث وقع في مكان ما‬ ‫في العالم وسافر في جميع أنحاء العالم‪ .‬وربما‬ ‫بقايا هذا الحدث ال تزال معنا في مكان ما في‬ ‫الغالف الجوي‪.‬‬ ‫مارتا ميكالوفسكا‪ ،‬منتدى سكاي فوروم‪،‬‬ ‫الشارقة‪ ،‬شهر أكتوبر ‪2019‬‬ ‫كان عمري خمس أو ست سنوات في ذلك‬ ‫الوقت وأتذكر أنني كنت أجلس وألعب بينما‬ ‫كانت أمي على مسافة قريبة‪ ،‬ثم فجأة هز‬ ‫المنزل‪ .‬انكسرت النوافذ ودخل الزجاج المحطم‬ ‫في موجة كبيرة‪ .‬أمسكت بي أمي وركضت‬ ‫إلى الطابق السفلي وقالت‪" ،‬إنها قنبلة‬ ‫كيماوية‪ ،‬إنها قنبلة كيماوية‪".‬‬ ‫أمي كانت صغيرة السن عندما وقع‬ ‫القصف‪ ،‬ربما الثالثين في العمر وأتذكر أنها‬ ‫تعرضت لضغوط شديدة ألن أطفالها لم‬

‫يعني من موقع طائرة أو قوات عسكرية‪ ،‬مثل‬ ‫تلك القوات الموجودة في سالح الجو الملكي‬ ‫البريطاني والتي قامت بتعيين العديد من‬ ‫الخرائط الجوية األولى للبحرين‪ .‬حتى يومنا هذا‪،‬‬ ‫تأتي القدرة على التأثير على التغيير من السماء‪.‬‬ ‫العالقة بين الشكل والسماء أو بين الشكل‬ ‫واألرض آخذة في التحول‪ ،‬وأصبحت خالل‬ ‫العقد ‪ ،2000‬مسألة الشكل على األفق‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عموديا تُ َّ‬ ‫صنف‬ ‫مستويا‬ ‫سطحا‬ ‫وتصبح السماء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فيه األشكال األيقونية‪ ،‬مما يمنح الهوية‬ ‫لمدينة أو أمة‪ .‬فإن يخلق مركز البحرين التجاري‬ ‫العالمي‪ ،‬الذي من المفروض أن ّ‬ ‫يمثل األشرعة‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سطحا‬ ‫مزدوجا‪ .‬إن األفق ليس فقط‬ ‫أفقا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تُ‬ ‫أيضا‪.‬‬ ‫مبان بل تعكسها ً‬ ‫مستويا سقط عليها‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مع هذا التحول ‪ ،‬يتحول الجانب البحريني‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مسطح لعالمنا‪ ،‬إما‬ ‫نحو السماء من مشهد‬ ‫من منظور الدودة أو من منظور الطيور‪ ،‬إلى‬ ‫االرتفاع‪ ،‬وبعبارة أخرى النظر في األفق ليس‬ ‫فقط للبحث عن السفن بل عن الهوية‪.‬‬ ‫ومن ناحية مسألة السماء‪ ،‬أعتقد أنه قد‬ ‫فقدت العديد من الصفات الطموحة التي‬ ‫كانت تحملها السماء في تغيرات القرن‬ ‫الماضي‪ .‬يكتب شاعر سعودي "استيقظنا من‬ ‫فقر القرى ووجدنا أنفسنا في المدن‪ .‬كانت‬ ‫تمتلئ نوافذنا بوفرة السماء المفتوحة‪".‬‬ ‫أعتقد أن األوهام عن السماء المفتوحة‬ ‫موجودا في الحظة بين السماء‬ ‫قد يكون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الشكلية من الفناء واللحظة التي نعيش فيها‬ ‫اليوم حيث يجب أن يشغل األفق رموزً ا ذات‬ ‫قيمة اقتصادية‪ .‬نحتاج فقط إلى التفكير مرة‬ ‫أخرى لجيل أو جيلين قبل لكي نتذكر مدى‬ ‫قدرتنا على التفكير في السماء ليس كفتحة‬ ‫في السقف الجماعي‪ ،‬بل حفرة شخصية في‬ ‫الجدار‪ .‬إن قطعة شخصية للسماء ‪ -‬على الرغم‬ ‫من أنها فارغة بشكل متزايد ‪ -‬أعظم وعد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سائدا لدرجة أننا بالكاد‬ ‫للحداثة‪ .‬وعد أصبح‬ ‫نفكر في النظر إليها‪.‬‬ ‫علي كريمي‪ ،‬منتدى سكاي‪ ،‬البحرين‪،‬‬ ‫شهر مارس ‪2019‬‬

‫للضم بشكل بارز بل‬ ‫قابال‬ ‫لم تعد السماء اليوم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تعتبر حقيقة ‪ -‬ملكية السماء وحدودها‬ ‫األخالقية ومعاييرها المادية‪ .‬ويتم إطالق كل‬ ‫عام ما يقرب من مئتي من األقمار الصناعية‬ ‫في السماء‪ ،‬وتعمل العديد من المركبات‬ ‫الفضائية حول كواكب وأقمار أخرى في أي‬ ‫وقت معين‪ .‬حاولت كل من بلدان الهند‬ ‫واإلمارات العربية المتحدة تنفيذ مشاريع‬ ‫طموحة في عام ‪ ،2019‬بما في ذلك هبوط‬ ‫القمر وإطالق أقمار المراقبة وبالطبع‪ ،‬فإن‬ ‫خصخصة الفضاء عبر سبايس أكس من رجل‬ ‫األعمال أيلون ماسك و بلو أوروجين من شركة‬ ‫أمازون قد أنتجت ما يقرب من مائة عملية‬ ‫إطالق لألقمار الصناعية أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫فيما يتعلق بهذا‪ ،‬لدي بعض األفكار حول‬ ‫إنهاء االستعمار للكوزمولوجيات‪ .‬فما هي‬ ‫الوسائل األخرى التي لدينا للتفكير في السماء‬ ‫بشكل فلسفي وأخالقي وثقافي؟ بالنسبة‬ ‫للمنظر األرجنتيني والتر مينولو‪ ،‬فإن "إنهاء‬ ‫االستعمار هي الطاقة التي ال تسمح بتشغيل‬ ‫منطق االستعمار وال تصدق القصص الخيالية‬ ‫لخطابة الحداثة"‪ .‬لذلك ال يمكن أن يكون إنهاء‬ ‫مشروعا لتعزيز الرؤى القومية‬ ‫استعمار الفضاء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جديدا للفضاء‪ ،‬بل من المفروض أن‬ ‫سباقا‬ ‫أو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يتطلب رؤية دولية وعالمية‪ .‬بالنسبة لعالم‬ ‫االجتماع من بيرو‪ ،‬أنيبال كويخانو‪ ،‬قد يكون‬ ‫إنهاء االستعمار لعلم الكونيات هو إزالة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫محددا من‬ ‫واحدا‬ ‫إصدارا‬ ‫الغطرسة التي تقول إن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الكون هو عالمي‪ .‬في هذه الحالة‪ ،‬سيتطلب‬ ‫إنهاء استعمار الكون مقاربة متعددة األعراق‬ ‫والمواقع‪ .‬بالنسبة لـلكاتبة بيجوم روكيا‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫كتبت حلمها النسائي في روايتها في عام ‪1905‬‬ ‫وتتكون من سيارات تطير في الهواء ورؤى‬ ‫شمسية‪ ،‬لكنها تصر على أن الرجال يكونون‬ ‫مغلقون داخل منازلهم‪ ،‬فعلم الكونيات الجديد‬ ‫سيتطلب التفكير في النوع االجتماعي‪ .‬هل‬ ‫الرؤية غير الذكورية للعالم ممكنة؟‬ ‫بالنظر إلى السياق المعاصر الذي ال يمكن‬ ‫فيه اعتبار المساحات والسماء والنجوم ً‬ ‫كونا‬ ‫عالميا‪ ،‬وال من المرغوب فيه أن‬ ‫فرديا أو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقطعهم إلى شظايا ضيقة من الدول‬ ‫والشركات واألفراد‪ ،‬فهل يمكننا التفكير في‬

‫النجوم‪ ،‬وكانت األرض مجرد كوكب واحد من‬ ‫بين ماليين الكواكب‪ ،‬فقد ال نكون فريدين‪.‬‬ ‫من فكرة كل شيء يتمركز حول كوكب‬ ‫واحد إلى فكرة التمركز حول نجمة واحدة إلى‬ ‫مجرة واحدة وبعد ذلك إلى تريليونات وتريليونات‬ ‫من المجرات‪ .‬هكذا فتحت عقولنا للكون كله‪ .‬إذا‬ ‫قارننا هذا مع القدماء وكيف فكروا في السماء‪،‬‬ ‫فستعتبر أفكارهم مقيدة للغاية‪.‬‬ ‫تعتمد اليوم حدود كوننا على نوع األدوات‬ ‫التي نستخدمها لمراقبته‪ .‬فإذا كنت تستخدم‬ ‫أدوات بصرية فقط‪ ،‬فقد تكون محدودة ألن‬ ‫التلسكوبات التي قد طورناها محدودة‪ .‬ولكن‬ ‫إذا نظرت إلى ما وراء تلك النافذة البصرية‪ ،‬وإذا‬ ‫كنت تستخدم نافذة األشعة تحت الحمراء أو‬ ‫مثال‪ ،‬فسيكون الكون أكبر بكثير‪.‬‬ ‫نافذة الراديو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مع تقدمنا في التكنولوجيا نرى بطريقة‬ ‫أفضل ونستطيع أن نرى أبعد وأبعد‪ .‬مفهومنا‬ ‫تماما عن المفهوم‬ ‫للسماء اليوم يختلف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫القديم ألننا لدينا فهم أوسع للكون مما كان‬ ‫لدينا قبل مائة عام فقط‪ ،‬ويعتبر هذا قفزة‬ ‫كبيرة في التقدم‪.‬‬ ‫غدا‪ ،‬أو ربما‬ ‫قد يتغير مفهوم الكون هذا ً‬ ‫في اليوم التالي للغد‪ ،‬أو الشهر المقبل‪ ،‬أو‬ ‫سنحسن طريقة مالحظتنا‬ ‫العام المقبل‪ ،‬ألننا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫له‪ .‬هذه هي الطريقة التي يتطور بها العلم‪،‬‬ ‫وهي ليست راكدة‪ ،‬وهذا هو السبب في أن‬ ‫السماء ال حدود لها‪ .‬نحن نحب األفالم ستار‬ ‫تريك و حرب النجوم وعلى الرغم من أنها تتجاوز‬ ‫ما يمكننا القيام به اليوم‪ ،‬إال أنها طريقة جيدة‬ ‫جدا لتخيل كوننا‪ .‬إذا تمكنت من الذهاب إلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مجرة أخرى‪ ،‬أو إلى نظام نجوم آخر‪ ،‬فقد تجد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‪.‬‬ ‫كوكبا وربما تكون هناك حضارة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫هل توجد الكائنات الفضائيه؟ هل يمكن‬ ‫أن يوجد كوكب يشبه األرض؟ ال يمكنك أن‬ ‫تقول ال‪ ،‬وال يمكنك أن تقول نعم‪ ،‬ألن العلم‬ ‫وحده هو الذي يستطيع اإلجابة على ذلك‬ ‫السؤال‪ .‬عندما تبحث في شيء ما‪ ،‬أو تنظر أو‬ ‫تالحظ‪ ،‬قد تجد شيء ما‪.‬‬ ‫إلياس فرنيني‪ ،‬منتدى سكاي فوروم‪،‬‬ ‫الشارقة‪ ،‬شهر أكتوبر ‪2019‬‬ ‫‪78‬‬

‫عندما نقوم بتغيير الهواء والغالف الجوي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بيئيا‪ ،‬يكون لذلك آثار بعيدة المدى في‬ ‫فوقنا‬ ‫أماكن أخرى حول العالم‪.‬‬

‫أعتقد أن معظم الحضارات سعت إلى‬ ‫المعرفة والحكمة من السماء فإنها أكبر‬ ‫شيء في العالم‪.‬‬

‫حتى لو لم نتمكن من تخيل حجم السماء‪ ،‬فإننا‬ ‫نعرف أنها ليست مثل األرض ألن األرض صغيرة‪.‬‬ ‫غربا‪ ،‬يمكنني الوصول إلى مكان ما وإذا‬ ‫إذا ذهبت ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا الوصول إلى مكان ما‪،‬‬ ‫شرقا‪ ،‬يمكنني‬ ‫ذهبت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لكن السماء ليست كذلك ألنها ال تنتهي‪.‬‬

‫فعال كان هناك طيور تسقط من السماء في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إندونيسيا وماليزيا ألنها كانت تخنق في الحرائق‪.‬‬

‫هناك جيل كامل من األطفال في الشرق‬ ‫األوسط يفهمون معنى الطائرات بدون‬ ‫طيار‪ .‬ويفهمون ذلك الصوت ويستجيبون‬ ‫لها بطرق غريزية‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫نتنشقه في نفس‬ ‫هناك ما هو أكثر بكثير في الهواء مما يمكننا أن‬ ‫فمثال‪:‬‬ ‫واحدة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وي اختراق حاجز الصوت الذي ينتقل عبر الهواء غير المرئي إلى أذنيك‬ ‫َد ّ‬ ‫عندما تعبر طائرة مقاتلة حاجز الصوت والمشاعر التي يثيرها هذا الصوت؛‬ ‫والجسيمات الرملية المعلقة في الهواء بعد عاصفة ترابية وحقيقة أنها‬ ‫قد سببت تلك الحروب في منطقة الخليج تفاقم هذه الظاهرة على مدى‬ ‫العقود األربعة الماضية؛‬ ‫واألقمار الصناعية التي تختلس النظر علينا من الحدود الغامضة بين‬ ‫المجال الجوي والفضاء الخارجي وتجعل فكرة العزلة الرومانسية في منظر‬ ‫طبيعي مجرد فكرة من حقبة ماضية؛‬ ‫والقصف الجوي الذي يبدو أنه أصبح طريقة االختيار في معظم النزاعات‬ ‫المسلحة منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية والصدمة التي ينطوي عليها كتهديد‬ ‫غير مرئي لمن يختبره على أرض الواقع؛‬ ‫الع ِجيبة التي يحلم بها المهندسون‬ ‫وعواكس الشمس وغيرها من التكنولوجيا َ‬ ‫والعلماء الذين يحاولون حل أزمة المناخ مع تجاهل أسبابها الكامنة؛‬ ‫والسفر عبر الفضاء وراء حدود الغالف الجوي لألرض والرغبة في معرفة‬ ‫ما إذا كنا لوحدنا في هذا الكون؛‬ ‫والهيكل القانوني الدولي الذي يحاول تحديد من يملك كل قسم من المجال‬ ‫الجوي والذي يقلق على احتمال استعمار الفضاء (من يملك القمر؟)؛‬ ‫واإلشعاع الذي يدور حول الغالف الجوي باعتباره سحابة غير مرئية بعد انفجار‬ ‫نووي وذكريات أولئك الذين واجهوا ذلك عن قرب؛‬ ‫والحقوق التي ربما يجب أن تكون موجودة لحمايتنا من التهديدات من األعلى؛‬ ‫وسماء الليل المعجوج بالنجوم كنقطة اللقاء للعلم والدين واألحالم‪.‬‬

‫عندما تحدثنا ألول مرة عن طوبولوجيا الهواء كنا على متن طائرة مروحية‪،‬‬ ‫فوق خط السحب الكثيفة الخريفية‪ .‬كنا أنا والفنانة شونا إيلينغوورث في‬ ‫طريق العودة من مطار مدينة بلفاست إلى مطار مدينة لندن بعد حديث‬ ‫شعرت بأن تلك‬ ‫الليلة السابقة في مركز بلفاست متروبوليتان للفنون‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫مناسبا للحديث عن الهواء ألننا‬ ‫الرحلة القصيرة وكثيرة الضجة كانت مكانً ا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كنا نتدلى في وسطه بفضل التكنولوجيا التي حققت حلم اإلنسان‬ ‫القديم في الطيران وهي التكنولوجيا التي تدفعها النفط‪ .‬ولكن هذا كان‬ ‫قبل بفترة طويلة من تشهير الناس بسبب رحالتهم بالطائرة‪ .‬كان ذلك‬ ‫قليال عن ثالث سنوات‪ ،‬ولكنه جيل كامل من الوعي‬ ‫الوقت قبل ما يزيد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫في وقت سابق‪ .‬فهو قبل الحركات فيجانيواري واكستينكشون ريباليون‬ ‫وقبل الناشطة غريتا ثونبارغ وحتى قبل السلسلة بلو بالنيت الثاني‬ ‫وشفاطات الشرب من الخيزران وفرش أسنان الخيزران‪.‬‬ ‫ربما كان منظر غروب الشمس في السماء الزرقاء الغامقة من نافذة‬ ‫طائرة فالي بي التي وفرت خلفية لكالم شونا في ذلك المساء قد أثرت‬ ‫على تفكيري ألنه بحلول الوقت الذي عبرنا فيه الطبقة الرمادية من‬ ‫أعج بالحماس وانتظرت‬ ‫الغيوم وضربنا مدرج المطار في مدينة لندن‪ ،‬كنت ّ‬ ‫بشوق حتى كنت قادرة على التواصل بتوماس وأخبره عن هذا المشروع‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أخيرا اتصلت به فأنا متأكدة من‬ ‫متفككة عندما‬ ‫من األكيد أنني كنت‬ ‫أنني ال أستطيع أن أنقل كل األفكار والقضايا التي تحدثت عنها شونا‬ ‫فكرت في هذا األمر منذ وقت‬ ‫بنفس الفصاحة والدقة‪ ،‬فبالطبع لقد‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫طويل‪ .‬وطفولتها التي قضتها تحت سماء شمال اسكتلندا الهائلة‪ ،‬إلى‬ ‫جانب ميدان القصف‪ ،‬جعلتها تنظر إلى السماء بمزيج من االحترام‬ ‫والتوجس‪ .‬كان من الممكن أن يتحول تلك المشهد المثير الذي‬ ‫والرهبة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كبرت فيه من مكان الهدوء والجمال إلى فضاء من العنف واإلرهاب في‬ ‫غضون ثوان عند تحليق الطائرات العسكرية فوق رأسها‪ .‬بقيت هذه‬ ‫التجربة معها ودفعتها إلى استمرار النظر إلى فوق ولكن ال يعني هذا‬ ‫النظر إلى فوق في الكثير من األحيان رفع رأسها بل تغيير المنظور‪ .‬تتعلق‬ ‫طوبولوجيا الهواء بالهواء نفسه‪ ،‬وهو المزيج من الغازات التي تشكل‬ ‫الغالف الجوي لألرض الذي يكون غير مرئي عند التتنفس فيه‪ .‬لكن كيف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫موجودا؟ لم تكن شونا سوف‬ ‫موجودا كأنه لم يكن‬ ‫نتحدث عن شيء يبدو‬ ‫ترسم التركيب الكيميائي للهواء وكيف تغير وتستمر في التغيير وستتغير‬ ‫في المستقبل‪ .‬لن يشكل هذا النوع من التحليل نقطة انطالق عميقة‬ ‫وجذابة لعمل فني‪ ،‬أو على األقل ليس من النوع المتوقع من شونا وهي‬ ‫قطعة غامرة تمسك على المستوى الفكري والعاطفي والحسي‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تبقى عالِ ً‬ ‫جدا‪ ،‬وتلك التي تثير األسئلة وتغويك‬ ‫قا في اعتبارك لفترة طويلة ً‬ ‫عميقا تحت الجلد من خالل الموسيقى‬ ‫بجمال صورها والتي تخترق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫التصويرية ذات الطبقات‪.‬‬

‫إلي توماس زانون‪-‬الرتشر المدير المشارك‬ ‫منذ ما يزيد عن عامين‪ ،‬كتب ّ‬ ‫تصوره لمشروع ننجزه مع الفنانة شونا‬ ‫لمؤسسة وابينغ بروجكت‪ ،‬عن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫إيلينجوورث تستكشف فيه فكرة الهواء‪ ،‬والكيفية التي يتعمق فيها فهمنا‬ ‫له عبر الزمن والثقافات والجغرافيا‪ .‬أسفرت هذه المحادثة عن اإلقامة‬ ‫البحثية واإلنتاجية للفنانة على مدى أسبوعين في الشارقة خالل أبريل‬ ‫‪ ،2019‬وكذلك "منتدى السماء"‪ ،‬الذي جمع خبراء في التاريخ والثقافة‬ ‫وعلم الفلك وعلوم الفضاء في أكتوبر من العام نفسه للنظر في العالقة‬ ‫السابقة والحالية والمستقبلية بين البشر والسماء في منطقة الخليج‬ ‫العربي‪ .‬مع كل من هذه المشاريع‪ ،‬كانت مشاركة الفنانة في السياق‬ ‫ومحفزة للتفكير العميق لجميع المعنيين‪.‬‬ ‫المحلي والمجتمعي مثمرة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا‬ ‫تم تخطيط الفترة التي أمضتها إيلينجوورث في الشارقة لتكون‬ ‫من العمل المتواصل لها على تكليف جديد مع مؤسسة وابينغ بروجكت‪.‬‬ ‫المكون من ثالث شاشات بعنوان "طوبولوجيا‬ ‫يقدم الفيديو التركيبي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طرقا جديدة للجمهور لمعاينة أهمية السماء‪ ،‬وثرائها الذي يتم‬ ‫الهواء"‪،‬‬ ‫تجاهله في الغالب‪ ،‬كعنصر أساسي وشامل يوحد البشرية جمعاء‪.‬‬ ‫كان من دواعي سروري أن نتعاون مع مؤسسة وابينغ بروجكت إلنجاز‬ ‫هذا التكليف الذي ُيعرض اآلن في متحف البحرين الوطني‪ .‬وكان المديران‬ ‫المشاركان مارتا ميشالوفسكا وتوماس زانون‪-‬الرتشر شريكين مثاليين في‬ ‫هذا المشروع الذي حظي بدعم كبير من البرنامج البريطاني الخليجي للثقافة‬ ‫والرياضة‪ ،‬والمجلس الثقافي البريطاني‪ ،‬ودائرة اإلنتاج الرقمي والفني‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا في‬ ‫والثقافي والرياضي البريطانية‪ ،‬وحملة "غريت"‪ .‬كان لنا الشرف‬ ‫استضافة الفنانة خالل فترة إقامتها معنا في الشارقة‪ ،‬وهي فرصة‬ ‫القيمة التي قدمتها لبرامجنا في المؤسسة‪.‬‬ ‫لشكرها على المساهمة ّ‬ ‫حور القاسمي‬ ‫رئيس ومدير مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون‬

‫والمتنوعة‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫الغنية‬ ‫األثرية‬ ‫يفخر متحف البحرين الوطني بمقتنياته‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مر األعوام‪ .‬حيث‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تم التّ نقيب والعثور عليها في مختلف أنحاء الجزيرة على ّ‬ ‫الدنماركيون في العام‬ ‫أظهرت أعمال التّ نقيب التي قادها علماء اآلثار‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتوصلت إلى مجموعة من‬ ‫قيمة حول تاريخ المنطقة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫‪1953‬م عن رؤى ّ‬ ‫األثرية التي ُ‬ ‫الوطني‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫البحرين‬ ‫متحف‬ ‫مقتنيات‬ ‫إلى‬ ‫ضيفت‬ ‫أ‬ ‫القطع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الدائمة حتّ ى يومنا الحاضر‪.‬‬ ‫للمعارض‬ ‫ا‬ ‫حقيقي‬ ‫ثراء‬ ‫ًّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تشكل ً‬ ‫تقدم شونا إيلينغوورث‪ ،‬حفيدة أحد هؤالء العلماء‪،‬‬ ‫المعرض‪،‬‬ ‫عبر‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وهو عالم اآلثار ب‪ .‬ف‪ .‬غلوب‪ ،‬عملها ّ‬ ‫الفن ّي (طوبولوجيا الهواء)‪ ،‬والذي‬ ‫يدرس تأثير التّ غيير الجيو ‪ -‬سياسي‪ ،‬التّ‬ ‫السريع على‬ ‫كنولوجي‬ ‫والبيئي ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مقابال‬ ‫موقعا‬ ‫الجوي‪ .‬وسيتّ خذ معرضها‬ ‫تكوين وطبيعة واستخدام المجال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫أثرية – ّ‬ ‫البحث‬ ‫المتداد‬ ‫ورمزية‬ ‫فن ّية‪،‬‬ ‫األثرية في‬ ‫لقاعات القطع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مقاربة ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وصوال للفضاءات المفتوحة‪،‬‬ ‫اإلنسانية‬ ‫جذر الحضارات‬ ‫واالكتشاف من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وهو ما ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بمنظور آخر‪.‬‬ ‫المحل ّية‬ ‫معرفي ًة‪ ،‬تُ عيد اكتشاف بيئتنا‬ ‫نقلة‬ ‫يمثل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫األرضية من خالل‬ ‫بيئتنا‬ ‫واستكشاف‬ ‫دراسة‬ ‫في‬ ‫ا‬ ‫عقود‬ ‫أمضينا‬ ‫فبعد أن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والتّ‬ ‫مقدمة الستكشاف آفاق‬ ‫ل‬ ‫يمث‬ ‫المعرض‬ ‫هذا‬ ‫فإن‬ ‫نقيب‪،‬‬ ‫المسح‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫إلعادةِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ماءِ‬ ‫ويتّ‬ ‫النظر‬ ‫موضوعا‬ ‫الس‬ ‫أخرى غفلنا عنها في الماضي‪ ،‬خذُ من ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الجوي لكوكبنا‪.‬‬ ‫البشري على طبقات الغالف‬ ‫في تأثيرنا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫البحث والتّ قصي‬ ‫تجارب‬ ‫يستلهم‬ ‫مهم من عمل إيلينغوورث‬ ‫جزء‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ٌّ‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫جر َيت في البحرين‪ .‬إذ جمعت‬ ‫وإعادة التّ فكير بالفضاء المفتوح‪ ،‬والتي ُأ ِ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫خلفيات وخبرات ومنظورات‬ ‫أفراد من‬ ‫المنتديات وورش العمل ما بين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫كفكرةٍ‬ ‫التّ‬ ‫األفكار‬ ‫في‬ ‫ق‬ ‫عم‬ ‫ومحاولة‬ ‫ومعنى‬ ‫السماء‬ ‫مختلفة لمناقشة ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المتّ صلة بها‪ .‬وخالل فترة إقامة ّ‬ ‫الفنانة في البحرين‪ ،‬كان لي شرف االنضمام‬ ‫فن‬ ‫إليها أثناء التّ صوير‪ ،‬واكتسبت رؤى حول‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التقنيات المستخدمة في ّ‬ ‫الفيديو‪ ،‬البحث واإلنتاج‪ .‬كما منحتني هذه التّ جربة مع إيلينغوورث فرصةَ‬ ‫حقيقية الستدعاءِ‬ ‫جماعيا‬ ‫فضاء‬ ‫و(السماء) باعتبارهما‬ ‫عنصري (الهواء)‬ ‫تأمل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ًّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عمق في مساحات‬ ‫واع‬ ‫بمنظور‬ ‫إدراكه‬ ‫من‬ ‫بد‬ ‫ال‬ ‫ا‪،‬‬ ‫مشترك‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫وجماعي‪ ،‬والتّ ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫بطرق فريدةٍ تتّ‬ ‫صل بالمجتمعات المختلفة حول العالم‪.‬‬ ‫التّ أثير عليه وتقديره‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مؤسسة (وابينغ بروجكت) التي ساهمت في أن‬ ‫ممتنون لدعم‬ ‫نحن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التّ‬ ‫عليمية‬ ‫ورات‬ ‫والد‬ ‫الورش‬ ‫من‬ ‫بمجموعة‬ ‫ا‬ ‫مصحوب‬ ‫المعرض‬ ‫هذا‬ ‫يكون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بالتّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قنيات‬ ‫هم‬ ‫تزويد‬ ‫أجل‬ ‫من‬ ‫يين‪،‬‬ ‫المحل‬ ‫انين‬ ‫الفن‬ ‫تستهدف‬ ‫التي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫الوطني‬ ‫البحرين‬ ‫متحف‬ ‫في‬ ‫م‬ ‫نتقد‬ ‫كما‬ ‫الفيديو‪.‬‬ ‫فن‬ ‫في‬ ‫مة‬ ‫ستخد‬ ‫الم‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البريطاني‪ DCMS ،‬و‪ GREAT‬لدعمهم‬ ‫قافي‬ ‫بعميق التّ قدير للمجلس الث‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الخليجي للمعارض‪.‬‬ ‫البريطاني –‬ ‫هذا المشروع‪ ،‬وذلك عبر البرنامج‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الشيخ خليفة آل خليفة‬ ‫الوطني‬ ‫البحرين‬ ‫متحف‬ ‫مدير‬ ‫ّ‬

‫ُيعد طوبولوجيا الهواء استكشاف مثير يأتي في الوقت المناسب آلثار‬ ‫التغييرات في تكوين وطبيعة واستخدام المجال الجوي على كل واحد منا‬ ‫بشكل فردي وعلى كلنا كبشر‪.‬‬ ‫يسر المجلس الثقافي البريطاني في البحرين قضاء وقت الفنانة‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫شونا إيلينغوورث في العمل على طوبولوجيا الهواء في البحرين وإبراز‬ ‫مناظرها الطبيعية في العمل‪ .‬من خالل المنتدى سكاي فوروم الذي‬ ‫انعقد في أبريل ‪ ،2019‬أتيحت لشونا فرصة تجاذب أطراف وجهات النظر‬ ‫حول الهواء والمجال الجوي والفضاء الخارجي والسماء من العلماء وعلماء‬ ‫اآلثار والمؤرخين والمهندسين المعماريين والفنانين المقيمين في‬ ‫البحرين‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى ذلك استضافت ورش عمل مع األطفال‬ ‫الستكشاف خيالهم في السماء وما قد يخبنه مستقبله‪.‬‬ ‫الفنون وسيلة فعالة لربط الناس والثقافات وتقديم طرق مبتكرة‬ ‫لمزيد من التفاهم المتبادل‪ .‬يدعم المجلس الثقافي البريطاني مجموعة‬ ‫فرصا لمزيد من‬ ‫متنوعة من المشاريع الثقافية في البحرين ‪ ،‬مما يوفر ً‬ ‫الناس لتجربة الفنون البصرية واألفالم والموسيقى واألدب واألداء من‬ ‫كل من المملكة المتحدة والبحرين‪.‬‬ ‫جدا بدعمنا للمعرض األول لطوبولوجيا الهواء‬ ‫ولذلك نحن فخورون ً‬ ‫الذي تم بتكليف من وابينغ بروجكت وننتظر بشوق رؤية هذا الفيديو‬ ‫الغامر بثالث شاشات والتركيب الصوتي المحيطي في متحف البحرين‬ ‫الوطني‪.‬‬ ‫فمثال‬ ‫الفني‬ ‫التركيب‬ ‫هذا‬ ‫دعموا‬ ‫الذين‬ ‫أوالئك‬ ‫جميع‬ ‫نشكر‬ ‫أن‬ ‫نود‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دي سي أم أس وجرايت من خالل برنامج الثقافة والرياضة في المملكة‬ ‫المتحدة والخليج وهيئة البحرين للثقافة واآلثار مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون‬ ‫وكذلك مجلس الفنون بإنجلترا وجامعة كنت‪.‬‬ ‫ريتشارد روز‬ ‫المدير القطري للبحرين‬ ‫المجلس الثقافي البريطاني‬
