The British Council’s work touches on the idea of Resonance or Resonating all the time.

Arts are a powerful way to bring people closer together, to stimulate mutual understanding and to help us appreciate what we have in common — to help us resonate with each other’s cultures.

Oman has a thriving visual arts scene with many well-established and emerging artists. Through our work in the arts and culture we hope to encourage more people to participate and experience works by both Omani and international artists, to share knowledge, experiences and ideas.

We are very proud to be supporting the programme Resonance which enabled four Omani artists, Rawan AlMahrouqi, Safa Baluchi, Ruqaiya Mazar, and Riham Noor Al Zadjali, to produce new works with the encouragement and support from the established Finnish artist Elina Brotherus.

The first time we crossed the Al-Hajar Mountains, the highest mountain range of the eastern Arabian Peninsula, flying from Bahrain to Oman, they were glowing in deep orange light. The sun was already below the horizon. We glimpsed down through the oval window of the Oman Air Embraer EMB 175 jet towards the deep ravines slowly disappearing in inky darkness. This rocky, dry, treeless landscape looked like nothing we had seen before. We were high above the highest peak of Jabal Shams, but we didn’t know that then. We didn’t know that eighteen months later we would hire a 4 × 4 to drive into the middle of these mountains and photograph Jabal Shams at dawn, as it emerged from the twilight and reflected the intense Middle Eastern sunrays towards our camera lenses.

‘What are we going to do?’ I asked.

‘Let’s see what happens, what this place is like,’ Thomas replied.

‘Umm, this is not quite what we are meant to be doing.’

I was worried that there was a blank in my mind. I wanted to be more prepared, to have clarity, not just a set of vague possibilities. We were exhausted. We had been travelling for almost two weeks. From airport to airport, from hotel to hotel, from museum to museum, from meeting to meeting, from pitch to pitch.

‘Let’s just see. We’ve already done what we were meant to do. This might be something new. Isn’t the idea of this programme to enable collaborations between art institutions from the UK and the Gulf?’ As usual, Thomas was much more relaxed about it all. Let’s see, let’s just see. Maybe we should have cancelled this last leg of the trip and had gone home, I thought.

But I wanted to come to Oman. I had never been before.

Eventually, a project emerged. A much more inspiring and stimulating one than we could have dreamed up from our desks in London. It took a few more trips, many hours of conversation, hundreds of WhatsApp messages, a handful of misunderstandings, four Omani and one Finnish artist, two arts organisations, one house in the mountains.

Elina Brotherus, with whom we had worked on a number of occasions since 2000, took on a task of being a mentor and peer to Rawan AlMahrouqi, Safa Baluchi, Ruqaiya Mazar, Riham Noor Al Zadjali. She set off into Jabal Akhdar in the Al-Hajar Mountains in a 4 × 4 with the four Omani artists she had never met before. They were to live and work together for a couple of weeks: drive, shop, cook, eat, washup, walk, think, film, photograph, draw, write, share, discuss, sleep.

Elina’s starting point for making her work is the concept of event score that comes from the American Fluxus artist George Brecht in the early 1960s. To describe what would happen in their works (events), Fluxus artists wrote a short instruction sheet or protocol — a score. It is analogous to a musical score: it says what to do to whomever wants to perform the piece.

Event scores were not meant to be performed by their authors only, but could be played by anyone, anywhere, according to their own interpretation. Elina expanded on the idea of the score and allowed herself to be influenced by a range of artists including filmmakers, photographers and poets. Anything can be used as an instruction: an existing artwork, a quote, an excerpt from autobiographical writing.

A number of scores the five artists worked on during their residency came from List of Art Ideas for 1st Class of CalArts, Post Studio (If They Have No Ideas of Their Own from which to Make a Piece), 1970, put together by the American artist and professor John Baldessari who passed away in January this year.

This publication celebrates the journey into the unknown that began two years ago, the risk we took to allow for the five bodies of work to be created. We wouldn’t have met Hassan Meer, Artistic Director of Stal Gallery in Muscat, who was prepared to take a leap of faith and work with strangers that turned up on his doorstep with a pile of books and publications and no concrete idea to pitch, if we had cancelled that last leg of our British Council scoping trip. We wouldn’t have met the artists Hassan introduced us to — Rawan AlMahrouqi, Safa Baluchi, Ruqaiya Mazar and Riham Noor Al Zadjali. We wouldn’t have had a project to work on with Elina Brotherus, and we had been searching for one for a while. None of these pieces of writing would have been written, translated, edited, designed and printed onto these pages.

In Make it resonate!, translated from English into Arabic

by Daisy Vaughan, Jen Calleja, reflects on resonance in her work of a translator of literature retelling stories written by people in another time and another place, and that of the five commissioned artists translating scores created decades ago by legendary artists: mediating them, making them theirs, ‘having a personal, which is to say, political response to them’, and regenerating them over and over again.

Saara Turunen’s piece Resonanssi (Resonance), translated from Finnish into English by Owen F. Witesman, and from Finnish into Arabic by Maria Pakkala, draws on the autobiographical to speak about resonance from two different directions. On one hand, it deals with the impact of feedback on life choices, on the other, it looks at the relationship between resonance and an artwork, how works affect their environment and change the world.

In Jokha Alharti’s short story ‫( زيارة‬A visit), translated from Arabic into English by Marilyn Booth, a woman tries to visit her lover who lives on the fifth floor of a strange building. The woman’s journey through the building to find a hidden passage is mired in obstacles, real and imaginary.

Resonance 2 is a counterpart to Resonance 1 published on 1 September 2019 and continues our exploration of ideas around different forms of resonance.

Translators often talk about resonance. Will this line or poem or word or novel or essay I’ve translated resonate with new readers in my translation? The way it resonated with me when I read it? Resonance is a matter of communicating meaning, but it’s also so much more than that. For something to resonate it needs to touch the person exposed to its presence in a deep way that feels meaningful: the reader might understand the stated information that a village is having a festival, for instance, but they might not understand the significance of the celebration, or how someone from that village might look forward to it or feel when it comes around every year. It is something both very specific and describable and straightforward, this kind of communication, and simultaneously abstract, inexplicable and highly creative. The ways a translator, or any mediator, conveys meaningfulness, conveys resonance, will differ from translator to translator, from artist to artist.

I see myself — as a translator of literature — as a storyteller, like those from oral traditions and cultures both past and present. I tell stories written by people in another time and another place, in my own way: in my singular interpretation of it. Another translator’s interpretation might be very similar to mine, or wildly different, depending on what we see in the text, what we bring to it as a reader, what our life experience has been, how we move through the world, where we are, and when.

Scores or prompts for works of art, like the ones created by Fluxus and presented by Elina Brotherus to the other artists during their residency, are in need of activation — they need translating into art and performance. Brotherus’ invitation is ingenious in that real, directed freedom to create often comes from a place of constraint, boundaries, instruction — I find translation so stimulating because of this restraint, this invitation to be creative within tight parameters. You know when you’ve gone too far and broken the rules, or when you haven’t gone far enough by being too literal — also breaking the rule of resonance.

These scores, created decades ago by legendary artists have grown famous, become myths, and the artworks generated from them ever since become the retellings — created in a different time, in different places, by different people. Doing the scores one’s own way, through one’s own self, shows us how unique and idiosyncratic a way even the most straightforward piece of text can be transformed and recommunicated. They’re

a Rorschach blot that sets off a period of free association.

They’re notations and instructions to be performed by you, like a musician interpreting sheet music, or a theatre director putting forward their vision of a written play. They’re thrillingly generative. These scores mean your blank page or tablet or canvas won’t be blank for long. They’re necessarily made from the stuff of you, conjured up by you. It too becomes a kind of scoring — marks made by you as a record, a trace, a response to something while in a certain time and place and frame of mind.

Brotherus has been working with these scores since 2016, and the photographs that make up her series Règle du jeu — ‘rule of the game’ — created with collaborator Vera Nevanlinna are so surprising and joyful and zingy. They remind me of young girls in a playground playing ‘tag’, singing a call and response back and forth across a field or a beach. (The field, beach, landscape too becomes a collaborator.) The scores become a game — the commands, the exclamation marks, it’s like the childhood favourite ‘Simon Says’ — ‘Simon says hide! Simon says pretend to be a fish!’. By dint of titling something that doesn’t yet exist, it makes you want to conjure up something into being to fill the void so the score isn’t left hanging. The scores are like restless cats. They are playful by design, and call for playfulness and acting up. There are novels that beg you to translate them, these scores are begging you to play with them. They have collaboration built into their very existence.

In her meditation on translation This Little Arts, Kate Briggs talks of how we sometimes have the impulse to do things ourselves because we benefit from it, even if it’s been done a hundred times before. Why do we like to copy out passages from books, why do we want to make a table when we can buy one, why do we want to write someone’s book again (translate), why keep making art based on Fluxus scores? Because we want to feel like it is ours, we want to feel close to it, because they can regenerate over and over again, and not lose power because of it. If anything, this proliferation shows us the complexity of the world.

Safa Baluchi’s work speaks to a tactile impulse, of physically feeling stone, water, material, sand, of being in it and passing through it — even if its abrasive or suffocating or repetitive. Her video work of scrubbing, washing, wringing, and wearing/ unwearing comes across as almost Sisyphean. Scrubbing the stones while the tide comes in could be viewed as a futile act,

but also one of care and attention. Routine can bring comfort, or it can bring about alienation. The action of cleaning makes one think of purity — both of spirit, but also of a kind of perfection of an achieved, completed goal. Her repeated acts also make one think of erosion — can working away at something for too long rub all meaning from it?

If you are to translate a message, what form should it take?

Why have an essay when you can have a photograph, a video, a sculpture or a poster? The importance of form in the communication of a message is apparent in Riham Noor Al Zadjali’s work. For many, her use of the intrusive/attractive image of the eye and the eye-catching form of the poster makes what she has to say much more accessible than words themselves.

Inspired by one of the most successful art-poster campaigns in contemporary art history — the Guerrilla Girls’ ‘Do Women Have to Be Naked to Get into the Met?’ — she translates it to her own cultural context to ask ‘Do we still need to fit into your fantasy box? — Oppressed Terrorist/Oppressed Sex Object’ — and usurps the original in the process.

Rawan AlMahrouqi connects the scores through her focus on domestic abuse, harnessing the inherent playfulness in the scores to make her message come through even stronger. A shop window of lampshades becomes a rabble of male eyes watching you, the viewer. A woman is permanently in the shadow of a man. The most striking image of all is a mother smiling with a boy, and two more smiling boys — a welcoming image — which is titled: ‘Female infanticide. The Disappearing Act’. When asked to think of a disappearance, it is not of herself or an object like in a magic trick, it’s of girl children.

Similarly, Ruqaiya Mazar’s series of photographs in response to the scores communicate so clearly the strength of feeling words like ‘freedom’, ‘bride’, ‘head’, ‘disguise’, ‘timeline’ and ‘disappear’ bring out from her as a young Omani woman with expectations on her life and the way she is ‘read’ in society. She is tied up in rubble, a visibly anxious bride, a womb waiting to be made use of, and reduced to her black clothing flapping in the wind.

The artists’ responses to the scores stun you by making you double take. Your expectations are jarred once the image sinks in, because so often they work on two levels, or oscillate between states. They are saying: I, as the translator, as the human mediating and passing on this fragment, am having a personal, which

is to say, political response to what I am reading. I am not simply a vessel for the passing on of a communicating, I feel this message a certain way because of who I am. This is the way I have to do my retelling, so that it resonates with me, and you.

Mirroring runs through these individual and collaborative works by the five artists — reflecting one another’s body language, dressing up like each other, somehow twinning no matter how incongruous, to become a translation of the other.

Or equally a translation of oneself from and into the private and public selves — do we want to be interpreted by the eye? It is in these moments of wearing costumes, wearing matching outfits, wearing the hijab, wearing identical or complementary colours, wearing a real or digitised mask or veil, or wearing nothing at all that we notice how clothing or the lack thereof can both create solidarity, sisterhood and belonging, but also create an effect of making one indistinct and unindividualised, even objectified or inhuman, or alienated from oneself. When we translate, we are always also translating ourselves, we must become dislocated and relocated in a new context — the score becomes a map that sets your path, while you remain the only one who knows what your destination will be.

If their work is their translations, the snapshots from their residency are the Translator’s Note or Afterward or Diary. How did this work come about? What was the environmental context? Who was there, who collaborated, who supported who?

What were the conditions of production? One could argue that they could have been made anywhere, but the works feel like a trace and record of a time of being together, a time of focus.

How were these translations made? Through the language of images, shared intent, bodily gestures, collaboration, sharing a meal, taking long walks, assisting one another.

The absolute presence of them, these five individuals who work together to produce interconnected and frequently collaborative work, is empowering for the viewer in the way their presence is palpable, it vibrates from these images. The snapshots from the residency don’t feel like still and posed, but nanoseconds before or between action, movement, as if they’ve all been dancing for hours and have just paused for a moment. Even these photos feel durational, that they will pass through time and last forever. They look like rock stars, a touring band who’ve just jumped out of the van in the middle of a landscape between shows. They are a punk band, performing a song in the sea.

Who does this work resonate with? It is not solely a matter of gender, but these images of women’s bodily presence and absence affected me deeply with their statements on the experiences of women, often within the confines of patriarchal society. That they seemed to often ‘read’ this experience within these very open scores, shows that it is not simply a theme, but the expression of the ubiquity and the embeddedness of this kind of tension and struggle. Even the simplest and most absurdly banal of things, like an orange, can become a tool for autobiography and a way of communicating a whole perceived world. An orange can be marvelled at, it can be segmented, it can be squeezed.

Vietin lapsuuteni pienessä itäsuomalaisessa kylässä.

Mahdollisuudet, joita ympäristö tarjosi vapaa-ajan viettoon, olivat jääkiekko, hiihtäminen ja kirkossa käyminen. Ne, jotka aikuiseksi kasvettuaan halusivat jäädä paikkakunnalle, saattoivat omistaa elämänsä lisääntymiselle, ja kaupan kassalla tai autokorjaamolla työskentelylle. Itselleni oli jo varhain melko selvää, että jollakin keinolla sieltä olisi päästävä pois.

Isäni työskenteli rakennusalalla, äitini puolestaan ravitsemusterapeuttina läheisessä kaupungissa. Minä kävin koulua ja iltaisin hiihdin pitkin metsiä. Joka toinen viikko oli kilpailut. Pärjäsin niissä yleensä melko hyvin. Sisälläni oli jonkinlaista patoutunutta raivoa, joka siivitti minua laduilla eteenpäin.

Perheessäni kuri ja ankaruus olivat arvossa. Myönteisten tunteiden esittäminen ei kuulunut tapoihin. Hellyyttä ei osoitettu, ei halailtu, kannustettu tai kehuttu. Vanhempani yrittivät parhaansa, mutta he eivät vain yksinkertaisesti osanneet sellaista. Heidän arvomaailmassaan liiallinen hemmottelu ylpisti lapsen. Ei ollut mitään pahempaa kuin nokkava tyttö, joka luuli itsestään liikoja. Äidilläni oli tapana painottaa lahjattomuuttani, ja sitä, miten en osannut kieliä, en ollut musikaalinen, en nätti, en kiltti enkä matemaattisesti älykäs. Ainut asia, jossa muistan äitini joskus antaneen minulle hyvää palautetta, oli siivoaminen.

Hän kehui minua siitä, miten hyvin osasin järjestellä tavarat tai pestä kylpyhuoneen lattian ja sillä keinolla hän sai minut tekemään lisää kotitöitä, koska janosin lisää kiitosta.

Muistan, kun kerran seurakunnan päiväkerhossa kolkutin puisella soittokapulalla tuolin selkämystä, ja opettaja ohi kulkiessaan sanoi, että minulla oli hyvä rytmitaju. En tiennyt mitä se tarkoitti, mutta otin sanat silti kohteliaisuutena vastaan, kätkin ne sydämeeni ja annoin niiden tehdä siellä työtään.

Lapsuuden perheessäni kenenkään mieleen ei juolahtanut, että joku meistä voisi ryhtyä taiteilijaksi. Taiteilijan viitta oli varattu vain joillekin hienoille ihmisille, sellaisille suurille miehille, jotka olivat kuolleet jo aikoja sitten ja tehneet taidetta Jumalan armosta, ja siksi, että he vain yksinkertaisesti sattuivat olemaan niin lahjakkaita, ettei heillä ollut muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin suoltaa ulos mestariteoksia, niin kuin Mozart, joka suoraan kehdosta noustuaan alkoi säveltää sinfonioita.

Minulle painotettiin, että tärkeintä olisi, jos oppisin olemaan hiljaa ja kiltisti, enkä häiritsisi muita. Toki täytyi myös kammata tukka, ja auttaa äitiä pitämään koti järjestyksessä, takit naulakossa ja hatut hyllyn päällä. Teini-ikään tultuani ryhdyin suunnittelemaan pakoa.

Jossakin sieluni uumenissa tajusin, että minun olisi löydettävä uudenlainen paikka, sellainen, jossa hiihdon ja kirkon penkissä istumisen lisäksi voisin tehdä muutakin, sellainen, jossa minua katsottaisiin hyväksyvästi ja kannustettaisiin, jossa ympäristöni värähtelisi ystävällisesti. Tämä halu oli hyvin intuitiivinen. Tajusin kai, että muuten tukahtuisin lopullisesti.

Ymmärsin myös, että jollakin tavalla pakenemisen mahdollisuus liittyi opiskeluun. Jonkin sattuman kautta sain kuulla maamme pääkaupungissa sijaitsevasta lukiosta, joka olisi erikoistunut taideaineisiin. Sain myös tietää, että sinne olisi erittäin vaikea päästä, mutta niille, jotka siinä onnistuisivat, aukenisivat monenlaiset ovet. Niinpä suostuttelin ja rukoilin vanhempiani. Sanoin, ettei heidän tarvitsisi pettyä, tulevaisuuteni tulisi olemaan loistava, jos he vain antaisivat armon käydä oikeudesta. Lopulta isäni suostui, vastahakoisesti, mutta kuitenkin. Äitini ei pitänyt siitä ajatuksesta, että muuttaisin yksin vieraaseen kaupunkiin ja omistaisin aikani jollekin niin tyhjänpäiväiselle kuin taide, mutta toisaalta hän ei myöskään asettunut vastaan, jos isäni oli jotakin päättänyt. Täytin hakemuspaperit huolella ja opiskelin peruskoulun loppuun hullunkiilto silmissä, ja kuin ihmeen kaupalla minut hyväksyttiin tuohon oppilaitokseen.

Ja niin jätin taakseni sen kaukaisen kylän ja vanhempieni neuvot. Muutin Helsinkiin ja aloitin uuden elämän. Myöhemmin olen ajatellut, että jollakin tavalla äitini vähättelevät sanat siivittivät minua. Minun oli pakko näyttää maailmalle, ettei hän ollut oikeassa, että minustakin olisi johonkin.

Koulutoverini tulivat aivan toisenlaisesta todellisuudesta.

Monet heistä olivat taiteilijoiden lapsia. He olivat asuneet koko elämänsä pääkaupungissa taiteen, kulttuurin ja luovan elämän ympäröiminä. He olivat tanssineet ja laulaneet, ja tienneet aivan pienestä saakka, että oli olemassa sellaisia ammatteja kuin näyttelijä, laulaja, kirjailija tai teatteriohjaaja, ja nuo

ammatit olivat sitä varten, että niihin ryhdyttäisiin, että joku sellainen kuin he itse voisivat niitä harjoittaa. Heitä oli jopa niihin kannustettu. Monet heistä soittivat jotakin soitinta sujuvasti ja pystyivät tuosta vain seurustelemaan vierailla kielillä. Olin ihmeissäni, seisoin koulun edessä kuin puupölkky ja katselin jäykkänä ympärilleni. Jostain kumman syystä en kuitenkaan lannistunut, vaan ajattelin, että kaikki tämä kuuluu nyt minulle ja aloin ammentaa elämää kitaani suurella kauhalla kuin se olisi ollut raikasta mehua, jota olin jo kauan aikaa janonnut. Luulisin, että kaikki tämä oli mahdollista vain siksi, että olin niin nuori ja tavallaan sokea. Ymmärsin lähtökohtieni erilaisuuden vasta myöhemmin ja silloin ihmettelin, miten oli mahdollista, etten ollut luhistunut olosuhteiden alle.

Muistan kyllä, että koulunkäynti oli minulle hankalaa, sillä olin valovuosien päässä muiden tasosta. En osannut puhua englantia, muista kielistä puhumattakaan, en ollut koskaan käynyt teatterissa, en tiennyt mitä oli ooppera, en osannut laulaa, käyttää järjestelmäkameraa tai soittaa mitään soitinta.

Myöskään hiihtotaidoistani ei ollut enää hyötyä. Helsingissä kukaan ei hiihtänyt, eihän kaduilla ollut edes lunta. Räpiköin silti eteenpäin ja huomasin pian, että kirjoittaminen oli ainut asia, jossa millään aiemmin tehdyllä ei ollut oikeastaan väliä. Jos osasi pitää kynää kädessään ja laittaa ajatuksia paperille, se riitti. Muistan, että opettaja kehui minua. Ja outoa siinä oli se, ettei hän kehunut niitä, jotka tulivat noista hienoista perheistä, vaan minua, jonka ei olisi kuulunut osata mitään. Tämä sai minut odottamaan noita tunteja kiihkeästi, kirjoittamaan yökaudet läpeensä ja lukemaan tekstini mielellään ääneen.

Tutustuin erääseen tyttöön, joka edusti tuota toista maailmaa puhtaimmillaan. Hän oli pääkaupunkilaisesta sivistysperheestä, harrasti modernia tanssia ja sellon soittoa.

Pidin hänestä kovasti ja opetin hänelle omat taitoni, joita olivat muun muassa holtiton alkoholin käyttö ja kaupoista varasteleminen. Luulisin, että tuo tyttökin piti minusta ja katsoi kai, että taidoissani oli jotakin jännittävää, ja niin meistä tuli ystävät.

Myöhemmin erilaisten mutkien kautta päädyin opiskelemaan dramaturgiaa teatterikorkeakouluun. Koulu oli hyvin arvostettu ja on omituista, että ylipäätään uskaltauduin pääsykokeisiin, mutta se johtui ennen kaikkea

siitä, että tuo ystäväni oli päässyt aiemmin opiskelemaan näyttelemistä, ja hän oli kertonut minulle, että koulussa oli linja, josta valmistui kirjoittajia. Lisäksi muistan, että minua kiehtoi tuon oppilaitoksen maine nimenomaan taidekouluna.

Minulla oli sellainen käsitys, että siellä opiskelevat ihmiset tekivät mitä huvitti, omistivat koko elämänsä taiteen palvelukseen, vaeltelivat pyjamassa kouluun, polttivat tupakkaa kahvilan edessä, ja pohtivat maallisten seikkojen sijasta elämää suurempia kysymyksiä. Niin minäkin halusin tehdä. Onni oli puolellani ja onnistuin pääsemään sisään. Käytin tuossa opinahjossa kaikkiaan kahdeksan vuotta, mutta se ei siltikään vielä tehnyt minusta taiteilijaa.

En mitenkään voinut nähdä itseäni sellaisena. Kuvittelin, että taiteilijuus olisi eräänlainen leima, joka iskettäisiin ihmiseen jostakin ulkopuolelta käsin. Odotin, että joku legitimoisi minut ja olemiseni. En uskaltanut itse legitimoida mitään. Äitini sanat kaikuivat yhä takaraivossani, ja jokin osa minua uskoi vakaasti, etten osannut mitään, että tulisin pettymään, jos kurottelisin liian korkealle.

Ylipäätään ajatus subjektiudesta oli minulle vieras.

En ollut oppinut ajattelemaan, että voisin ottaa kohtalon omiin käsiini ja tehdä asioita. Kaikkien noiden vuosien jälkeen kuvittelin edelleen, että minun olisi löydettävä joku mies, joka huolisi minut ja sillä tavalla elämäni ongelmat ratkeaisivat. Odotin monta vuotta tuota miestä tumput suorina, ja ajattelin, että jonain päivänä hän saapuisi ja sitten hän tekisi puolestani kaikki ne taideteokset, joita olisin itse halunnut tehdä. Näin jälkeenpäin katsottuna ajatus on kerta kaikkiaan järjetön, mutta menneisyys värähteli yhä sielussani ja kuristi kurkkuani, ja vain sattuman kaupalla pääsin pyristelemään irti tuon tukahduttavan kouran otteesta.

Opintojeni päätteeksi kirjoitin näytelmän. En kuitenkaan löytänyt sille ohjaajaa. Kyselin kaikilta vastaantulijoilta ja entisiltä opiskelutovereilta, josko joku olisi voinut auttaa minua. Mutta kaikki olivat kiireisiä tai eivät muuten vain kiinnostuneet tarjouksestani. Heillä oli heidän omat projektinsa tehtävänään.

Lopulta eräs vanhempi taiteilija sanoi minulle, että minun olisi ohjattava näytelmäni itse, tai muuten sitä ei ohjaisi kukaan, eikä se koskaan näkisi päivänvaloa. Tuo ajatus oli liian karmea ja niinpä ryhdyin työhön, epävarmana mutta kuitenkin. Ja hyvin pian aloittamisen jälkeen huomasin, ettei työ ollut yhtään vaikeaa, päinvastoin se oli mieltä rikastuttavaa ja antoi elämälle

sisällön tunteen. Paljon vaikeampaa ja pahempaa oli ollut pelko, joka oli sitä edeltänyt. Työtä tehdessä epäilykset unohtuivat ja eteen avautui uusi maisema. Nämä tapahtumat olivat tulevaisuuteni kannalta oleellisia. Toki myöhemminkin kohtasin paljon vaikeuksia, mutta tärkeää oli se, että olin ottanut ensimmäisen askeleen, muuntautunut tarkkailijasta tekijäksi. ��� Kun joitakin päiviä sitten postilaatikkooni saapui viesti, jossa minua pyydettiin kirjoittamaan jotakin aiheesta resonanssi, menin ensiksi Googleen ja katsoin, mitä tuo sana oikeastaan merkitsee. Löysin Wikipedia-artikkelin, jossa puhuttiin fysiikan laeista, ja ilmiöstä, jossa jokin voima saa kappaleet tai jonkin aineen värähtelemään, miten esimerkiksi tuuli voi murtaa betonisen sillan, miten aallot vyöryvät rantaan ja miten kielten värähtely aiheuttaa sen, että syntyy musiikkia. Siltojen romahtaminen, aaltojen vyöryminen ja kielten värähtely kuulostivat mielestäni melko kauniilta, jotenkin voimakkaalta, ja yritin miettiä, synnyttäisivätkö ne mielessäni jotakin.

Ennen kaikkea aloin ajatella taidetta ja taiteilijuutta, ehkä sen takia, että mielestäni taiteeseen kuuluu hyvin oleellisena kommunikaation ja jakamisen elementti, se hetki, jossa teos ja sen vastaanottaja kohtaavat ja syntyy värinää, resonanssia.

Ja toisaalta siksi, että usein taiteilijoista puhuttaessa kuulee puhuttavan lahjakkuudesta. Myös minut kasvatettiin tuohon ajatukseen poikkeusyksilöistä. Ajattelen kuitenkin, että lahjakkuus on vain häviävän pieni osa sitä, mikä tekee ihmisestä taiteilijan. Kaikki lapset syntyvät täynnä vaistonvaraisia taitoja, he tykkäävät laulaa, tanssia ja piirtää. Toki joku pysyy laulun sävelessä kiinni helpommin kuin toinen, ja yksi osaa hahmotella paperille kolmiulotteisen talon paremmin kuin toverinsa, mutta lopulta sillä ei ole paljoakaan merkitystä. Merkitystä on vain sillä, että jatkaa luovien toimien tekemistä kaikesta huolimatta, ja moitteista piittaamatta tuo tekeleensä esille, muiden nähtäväksi.

Ajattelen, että teokset tarvitsevat yleisön, kuulijan, lukijan tai katsojan, että oikeastaan niitä ei ole olemassakaan ennen kuin ne on nostettu pöytälaatikosta esille ja tuotu ihmisten saataviksi.

Vasta silloin teokset heräävät eloon, alkavat täyttää tehtäväänsä ja värähdellä ihmisten mielissä, tuottaa tunteita ja ajatuksia, jotka usein johtavat sanoihin ja tekoihin, ja joskus lopulta jopa romauttavat siltoja, tai edesauttavat vallan vaihtumista.

Teoksen yleisön eteen saattaminen on kuitenkin taiteilijalle toisinaan haastavaa, ja pelosta, itsekritiikistä ja tuomituksi tulemisen kauhusta johtuen jotkut eivät uskaltaudu tähän vaiheeseen koskaan, vaan antavat teostensa jäädä piiloon. Heidän käsityksensä omista kyvyistään ovat kenties realistisemmat kuin yhdenkään sellaisen, joka ylittää tuon rajan, mutta samaan aikaan lopputulos on se, etteivät heidän teoksensa pääse kohtaamaan sitä taiteelle välttämätöntä hetkeä, jossa se alkaa vaikuttaa maailmaan.

Ajattelen, ettei ole mitään väärää tai oikeaa tapaa, jolla teos voisi resonoida. Se resonoi aina eri tavoilla riippuen ajasta, paikasta ja katsojasta tai kokijasta. Taiteilija ei voi vastata siitä, miten teos milloinkin toimii. Tultuaan valmiiksi teos alkaa elää omaa elämäänsä.

Taiteilija on latautunut sana ja yhä edelleen se tuo mieleeni ensimmäisenä jonkun kauan sitten eläneen ja kuolleen suurmiehen, jonka haudalle turistit nyt jonottavat. Hän oli taiteilija, sanovat turistit ja hymisevät yksimielisinä. Huutokaupassa myydään taiteilijan jäämistöstä löytyneet kalsarit kalliiseen hintaan ja joku konservaattori nostaa ne esille museotyöskentelyyn tarkoitettuja hansikkaita apunaan käyttäen.

Usein tuntuukin siis hiukan röyhkeältä käyttää itsestään tuota nimitystä, eritoten, jos sattuu olemaan pieni nainen, ja vieläpä elossa. Olen kuitenkin päättänyt tehdä niin, sillä mielestäni taiteilijuus kytkeytyy ennen kaikkea arkiseen työskentelyyn. Ja toisaalta olen hyvin kiitollinen siitä, että monien epäröintien jälkeen pääsin työhön käsiksi, sillä ajattelen, että taiteilijuutta eivät määritä ulkopuolelta tulevat leimat, vaan se, että jatkaa tekemistä kaikesta huolimatta, laulaa, tanssii ja piirtää, vaikka maailma ympärillä ei aina siihen kannustaisikaan.

Ja se, että kutsun itseäni taiteilijaksi on ennen kaikkea muistutus itselleni siitä, että minun on työskenneltävä, eikä odoteltava kuolemaani saakka, että joku arvovaltainen herra jossakin arvokkaassa salongissa nostaisi työni jalustalle.

Olen päättänyt olla taiteilija jo eläessäni, ja sillä hyvä.

Viime aikoina olen huomannut, miten erityisesti hyvyys ja hyvät eleet ovat liikuttaneet minua. Ehkä olen vain tullut vanhaksi ja olen yhä heiveröisempi kestämään väkivaltaisia uutisia tai shokeeraavia taideteoksia. Mutta toisaalta ajattelen myös, että hyvyyden ja kauneuden näyttäminen niin elämässä kuin taiteessakin on paljon haastavampaa kuin synkkyys ja murjotus.

Luin kirjaa, jossa kirjailijan isä teki kuolemaa ja kirjailija kävi tuntojaan lävitse. Ennen kuin isä kuoli, onnistui kirjailija sanomaan hänelle, että arvosti tätä. Tuo yksittäinen kohta itketti minua. Itkin myös, kun katselin kuvaa kahdesta sotaveteraanista, joiden perhe oli kuollut vuosikymmeniä sitten, mutta jotka istuivat yhä vierekkäin sohvalla ja pitivät toisiaan kädestä. Tuo ele, kädestä kiinni pitäminen, siinä oli jotakin niin kaunista, eikä sellainen ole aikuisten miesten kesken yleensä tapana. Ja uutisissa näin erään koulutytön haastattelun. Kaikki koululaiset oli kutsuttu kaupunginjohtajan taloon viettämään juhlapäivää, ja he olivat saaneet tanssia.

Tytön olemuksessa oli jotakin tomeraa ja emäntämäistä, mutta silti hän oli pukeutunut herkkään röyhelömekkoon. Kyllä tämä on hieno lahja, että me tänne saatiin tulla, hän sanoi kuuluvalla äänellä. Ja taas minä itkin. Tytön kiitollisuus liikutti minua.

Luulisin, että menneisyydessäni ja ehkä myös kulttuurissani on jotakin sellaista, joka on tehnyt minulle hyvyyden ja myönteisten tunteiden esittämisen vaikeaksi. En ajattele sillä tavalla kuin minulle lapsuudenkodissani painotettiin, että kehuminen ylpistäisi ihmisen. Päinvastoin, mielestäni kauniita asioita tulee sanoa muille ihmisille lakkaamatta. Mutta samaan aikaan minun on itse usein vaikea saada niitä ulos suustani.

Minun on yhä edelleen hankala osoittaa läheisyyttä kanssaeläjilleni ja olen taipuvainen näkemään asioissa helpommin epäkohdat kuin kiitoksen aiheet.

Toisaalta minulla oli sen verran onnea elämässäni, että saatoin omistautua taiteelliselle työlle. Opin rakentamaan teoksia, osoittamaan epäkohtia ja näyttämään sellaiset asiat, joihin en ollut tyytyväinen. Vasta viime aikoina olen kuitenkin kysynyt itseltäni, miten voisin näyttää elämän kauneuden ja ihmeellisyyden, osaisinko tehdä jotakin sellaista, joka voisi tuottaa iloa. En tiedä. Olen kuitenkin päättänyt katsoa siihen suuntaan.

I spent my childhood in a small village in eastern Finland where the main leisure activities were hockey, cross-country skiing, and attending church. Anyone who wanted to stay when they grew up could devote their lives to reproduction, standing behind a cash register, or working as a mechanic. Early on, it was clear to me that some way or another I had to get out.

My father was employed in the construction industry, while my mother worked as a nutritionist in a nearby town. I spent my days in school and my evenings skiing in the woods. Every other week, we had races, and I generally did pretty well. There was this pent-up rage inside of me that gave me wings.

My family placed a great deal of stock in strict discipline.

Displaying positive feelings wasn’t our way. We didn’t express affection or hug, let alone give encouragement or praise. My parents tried their best, but they simply didn’t know how to do any of that. In their value system, pampering meant spoiled children. There was nothing worse than a sassy girl who thought too much of herself.

My mother made a regular habit of calling attention to my lack of talent. I wasn’t good at languages or music, I wasn’t pretty or good-natured, and I wasn’t gifted at maths. The only good feedback I remember receiving from my mother was about cleaning. She congratulated me on my tidying skills and how well I could scrub the bathroom floor, and she used that to get me to do more housework, because I was hungry for her praise.

Of course, there were also some small, fleeting moments during my childhood when someone outside of my family said something nice about me. I remember once at our children’s play group at church I was beating the back of a chair with a drumstick and as the teacher passed, she commented on what a good sense of rhythm I had. I didn’t know what that meant, but I still took the words as a compliment, treasuring them up in my heart and letting them do their work.

In our home, it never crossed anyone’s mind that one of us might end up as an artist. The artist’s mantle was reserve for great men who had died long ago and made art by the grace of God. They had been men of such prodigious talent that they couldn’t help but produce one masterwork after another, like Mozart who began composing symphonies the moment he crawled out of the crib.

My parents stressed that the most important things I could learn were to be quiet and polite so I wouldn’t disturb anyone.

Of course, I also had to comb my hair and help my mother keep the house in order, the coats on their hooks, and the hats on the shelf. Those were the skills that were useful for girls, and I was taught that if I was very obedient and well-behaved, someday a man might take a fancy to me, and I might be able to get married, at which point my purpose in life would be complete.

Once I was a teenager, I began planning my escape.

Somewhere in the depths of my soul I realised that I had to find a new place where I could do things besides ski and sit on a church bench, a place where people would accept me and encourage me, a place where the entire environment would practically resonate with benevolence. This was an intuitive desire. I think I realised that otherwise I would suffocate. I also understood that any possible escape would have to involve education. Through some coincidence, I heard about a secondary school in Helsinki that specialised in art. I also learned that it would be very difficult to gain admittance, but that people who did get in would have all sorts of doors open for them. So, I started working on my parents. I told them that they wouldn’t be disappointed and that my future would be brilliant if they would only temper their justice with mercy. Eventually, my father reluctantly agreed, but he did agree. My mother didn’t like the idea of me moving to a strange city and devoting my time to something as useless as art, but on the other hand, she never objected to anything once my father had made up his mind. So, I carefully filled out the application forms and finished middle school with a mad glint in my eyes, and, as if by some miracle, I was accepted to the school! Not long after, I left behind that distant village and my parents’ guiding influence to move to Helsinki and start a new life. There have been times since then when I’ve thought that my mother’s belittling words actually spurred me on. I had to show the world that she was wrong, that I could make something of myself.

My new schoolmates came from an alternate reality. Many of them were the children of artists and had lived their whole lives in the capital surrounded by art, culture, and creativity.

They’d learned to dance and sing, and they’d always known that actor, singer, writer, and theatre director are perfectly legitimate professions, and that these professions exist so that people can enter them — people just like my schoolmates. Many of them played a musical instrument and could converse in foreign languages as if it was nothing. Sometimes I would just stand in

front of the school in astonishment. But for some strange reason, I didn’t give up. I thought that all this belonged to me now, and I began scooping life into my open mouth with a huge ladle as if it was the juice of a sweet fruit I’d been thirsting for my entire life. I imagine that all of this was possible only because I was so young and blind in a way. I didn’t completely comprehend how different my background was until later, and then I was flabbergasted that I hadn’t collapsed under the weight of circumstance.

I remember school being difficult because I was light years behind everyone else. I didn’t know English, let alone any other language. I’d never been to the theatre. I didn’t know what an opera was. I didn’t know how to sing. I didn’t know how to use an SLR camera or play any instrument. And my cross-country skiing skills weren’t any use anymore. No one skied in Helsinki, and there wasn’t even snow on the streets. And yet I floundered forward and soon found that writing was the only thing where it really didn’t matter what you’d done before. If I could hold a pen and put my thoughts down on paper, that was enough. I remember my writing teacher praising me, and the strange thing about it was that she didn’t praise the ones who came from those wonderful families. I shouldn’t have known how to do anything, but I was the one receiving the attention. This made me look forward eagerly to those classes, and I found myself staying up nights to write. I even enjoyed reading my work out loud.

At school there was a girl I met who represented that alternate world in its purest form. She was from a sophisticated family, a modern dancer who also played the cello. I liked her a lot and taught her some of my own skills, like excessive alcohol consumption and petty larceny. She seemed to like me, and she must have thought there was something exciting about what I taught her, because we became friends.

Later through various twists of fate, I ended up studying dramaturgy at the Helsinki Theatre Academy. It was a very well-respected school, and it’s strange that I ever worked up the courage to sit for the entrance exams. Mainly it was because my friend had gone there to study acting, and she’d told me that there was also a program that trained writers. I also remember being intrigued by the reputation of the school specifically as a school for artists. I had this idea that the people who studied there must do whatever they felt like, devoting

their lives to the service of art and wandering the halls in their pyjamas when they weren’t sitting in front of a café smoking and pondering the great mysteries of life rather than bothering with mundane facts. That’s what I wanted to do, too. Luck was on my side again, and I managed to get in. I spent a total of eight years in that great seat of learning, but it still didn’t make me an artist. I just couldn’t see myself that way. I imagined that being an artist was a sort of stamp that was placed on a person by some external body. I was waiting for someone to legitimise me and my existence. I didn’t dare to legitimise anything myself.

My mother’s words still reverberated in the back of my head, and some part of me firmly believed that I was no good at anything, that I would fail if I reached too high.

When I started out, the idea of subjectivity was completely foreign to me. I hadn’t learned that I could take my fate in my own hands and just do things. After all those years, I still imagined that I had to find a man to take care of me and solve all the problems in my life. I waited for that man for years with my life on hold, thinking that someday he would step in and create all the works of art I had wanted to make myself. Looking back on it, the whole idea was absurd, but the past still echoed in my soul and made my throat constrict. It was only by chance that I managed to fight my way out of that suffocating grip.

At the end of my studies, I wrote a play. I couldn’t find a director for it, though. I asked everyone I ran into and all my old college friends if one of them could help me, but everyone was busy or otherwise just not interested. They had their own projects to worry about. Finally, an older artist told me that I would have to direct my play myself or no one would direct it, and it would never see the light of day. That thought was too horrible to bear, so I got to work, insecure, but still. And soon after getting started, I found that the work wasn’t that hard after all. On the contrary, it enriched my mind and gave life a sense of fullness. The fear that had preceded it had been much more difficult and unpleasant. As I worked, I forgot my doubts and a new vista opened up. These events were essential for my future. Of course, later I experienced any number of difficulties, but the important thing was that I’d taken the first step and moved from observer to doer. ��� 44

A few days ago, when a message arrive in my mailbox inviting me to write something on the topic of resonance, I first went to Google to look up what the word actually means. A Wikipedia article talked about the laws of physics and a phenomenon where a force amplifies the movement of an object or substance. The wind can break a concrete bridge, waves roll in to shore, and the vibration of vocal cords can make music. Bridges collapsing, waves rolling, and vocal cords vibrating all sounded rather beautiful to me, powerful somehow, and I let those images gestate in my mind.

Most of all, I started thinking about art and being an artist, maybe because I think that communication and sharing are a fundamental element of art — the resonance in the moment when the artwork and the person experiencing it meet.

And also, because often when we talk about artists, we talk about talent. Like many people, I was raised with the idea of artists as exceptional individuals. But now I think that talent is only a vanishingly small part of what makes a person an artist.

All children are born full of instinctive skills. They love to sing and dance and draw. Of course, some of them can stay on key easier than others, and one might be able to sketch a three-dimensional building better than her peers, but ultimately that doesn’t matter much. What does matter is continuing creative pursuits regardless of everything else, ignoring criticism and showing off your creations no matter how unrefined.

I think that works of art need an audience — a listener, a reader, or a viewer — and that they don’t really exist at all until they’ve been retrieved from the drawer and placed where someone can see them. Only then do works of art come to life, beginning to fulfil their purpose as they resonate in the human mind, evoking feelings and thoughts that often lead to words and deeds, sometimes to the point of toppling not only bridges but also power structures.

Bringing a work to an audience can be difficult for an artist sometimes, though. Fear, self-criticism, and a desire to avoid rejection can lead to some never making this leap and instead allowing their work to remain hidden. Their conceptions of their abilities may be more realistic than those of anyone who steps across that line, but that also means that their work never reaches the moment that is so essential for art when it begins to affect the world.

I think that there isn’t any right or wrong way for a piece of art to resonate. It will always resonate in a different way

depending on the time, place, and viewer or experiencer. An artist cannot be responsible for how a piece works at any given moment. Once completed, art takes on a life of its own.

Artist is a charged word, and it still reminds me first of those long-dead great men whose graves tourists queue up to see. ‘Now there was an artist,’ the tourists unanimously intone.

Then when his underpants are discovered among his belongings, a conservator dons white museum gloves to hold them up as they are auctioned off.

Often it feels a little cheeky to apply the word to myself, especially since I happen to be a short woman with the temerity to be alive. But I’ve decided to go ahead and do it anyway, because, in my opinion, being an artist is mostly about hard work. But even so, I’m grateful that after so much hesitation, I finally managed to get down to that work. I think being an artist isn’t determined by external validation but by sharing what you create despite anything external. You sing, you dance, and you draw even if the world around you doesn’t always give you any encouragement. And the fact that I call myself an artist is above all a reminder for myself that I have to work, instead of waiting until I’m dead for some distinguished gentleman in some fancy salon to place my work on a pedestal. I’ve decided to be an artist in my own time, and that’s all there is to it.

Lately I’ve been noticing how much goodness and kind gestures move me. Maybe I’m just getting old, and that’s why I’m less able to tolerate violent news or shocking art. But then again, I also think that enjoying goodness and beauty in life and in art is much more challenging than gloom and sulking.

I read a book where the author’s father was dying, and the author was processing his emotions. Before the father died, the author managed to tell him that he appreciated him. That passage made me weep. I also wept recently when looking at a picture of two war veterans. Both had been left widowers decades earlier, and they sat on the sofa hand-in-hand. That gesture, holding hands, had something so beautiful in it, especially because it’s so uncommon for grown men. And on the news, I saw an interview with a little girl. All the children in her school had been invited to the mayor’s house to celebrate a holiday, and they’d got to dance. She seemed so energetic, like she owned the place, but she was still dolled-up in a frilly frock. ‘This was such a nice present that we got to come here,’ she announced loudly. And I cried again, because her gratitude moved me.

I suppose that there is something in my past and maybe also in my culture that has made it difficult for me to express goodness and positive emotions. I don’t think the way I was taught at home as a child, that praise will spoil a person. On the contrary, I think we should say nice things to each other constantly. But at the same time, I frequently have a hard time getting the words out of my mouth. I still have difficulty expressing affection to others, and I have a tendency to see defects more readily than reasons for praise.

And yet, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to dedicate my life to my work. I learned to build works of art, to point out the ills of the world and to highlight things I’m not satisfied with.

But not until recently have I begun to ask myself how I can present the beauty and wonder of life and whether I can make things that bring people joy. I don’t know. I’ve decided to look in that direction, anyway.

Jokha Alharthi A visit

I decided to pay a visit to the man I love.

I chose the most ordinary possible time of day; late morning it might have been, or perhaps late afternoon. And so there I was, one morning or one afternoon, on the street called after the King of the Jinn and the Winds. But I had no luck finding the right entrance, for these structures all looked alike and the building numbers had somehow been rubbed out. I knew that the building I was looking for had two entrances. There would be one in front, with a guard sitting behind some overturned cardboard cartons on which there were arranged stacks of cigarette packs, chewing gum, multi-coloured erasers, strings of silvery prayer beads, pencils, and flat balloons in their transparent plastic wrappers. The door guard would not be calling out his wares, though. In fact, he would be acting a little embarrassed about it all, sitting slightly apart from the cardboard cartons and exhaling his cigarette smoke lazily as though he

had nothing to do with this paltry little commerce that sat out there for all to see, but sitting close enough that he and his wares would not be a tempting target for petty thieves.

The back door was not under guard. But it only gave access to flats that were not the flats one could reach through the front entrance. That is, except for one floor of the building, where a long corridor joined the building’s front and back halves. But I did not know which floor that was. I guessed that this dull grey, heavy wooden door I could see was the second entrance to the building. I felt certain that it was the right door, and this was the right building, even though I could not step back far enough to make out the shape of its balconies clearly.

Right now, my darling might be standing on one of those balconies, leaning forward over the railing and smoking and thinking about me, or drinking his strong tea with cardamom and not thinking about me at all.

I entered the building, displaying a confidence that I didn’t feel. Before leaving home, I carefully put on an outer garment that would draw no attention, and I had decided not to add any colour to my face. I stuffed the long-stemmed rose I had bought far enough into my rucksack that it would not show. The day before, I had assembled everything I imagined I might possibly need to justify my presence here, in case I ran into someone unexpectedly. And so now I held my head high, I breathed deeply, and my trainers stepped smartly and decisively onto the marble steps. But my heart was pounding so loudly that I could barely hear anything else. I caught sight of a black cat flitting past, coming from the darkness under the stairway, and I suddenly remembered a Japanese story about an elderly woman. When

she fainted, she was attacked and eaten by her cats, who had been nearly dead of hunger after being stuck for so long inside a home where they had no way to get out. I imagined a horde of cats suddenly appearing, ready to attack me and keen to draw blood, and when the man I loved came downstairs to go out and do his shopping, he would find me lying here, a shredded corpse.

But despite the cat slinking by and the gloomy, unnerving atmosphere, the ground floor was completely calm and quiet, and I easily found the stairs to the first floor.

The flight of stairs led me onto a corridor slightly brighter than the entrance below. Two pairs of doors faced each other on either side of the hallway, leading into four seemingly identical flats. I had to walk from one end of the corridor to the other in order to see if I could find the passage linking the two halves of the building. But there was no second corridor there. I felt myself perspiring as I climbed to the next floor.

I could not keep my imagination from running away with me, I could not avoid thinking that now I was becoming just like him, breaking out in a sweat the minute I had the slightest sense of anxiety. As long as I had known him, he had been anxious most of the time; and he was covered in sweat most of the time. In the beginning, I was perpetually astonished at the endless, trivial matters that gave him such anxiety. I had been brought up with the idea that life was fairly simple and straightforward.

It amazed me to discover that it could be made so complicated.

Over time, though, I became used to his unease. I learned how to discount his drama-filled exaggerations over issues that appeared to me too minute to even deserve a passing thought.

Maybe I was moving unconsciously in his direction, coming to resemble him.

Now here I was on the second floor, my hands trembling slightly, as I realised there was no corridor here either, other than the main hallway, with another four flats opening off it, more or less identical to those on the floor below. I paused in front of one of them to regain my breath. The wood surface of the closed door was carved with geometric designs. It seemed to me that I could hear the sound of snoring inside, but I didn’t think those were a man’s snores. What if it was a huge cat, sensing my nervous presence as he sat on the other side of the door, breathing noisily with his claws drawn to pounce on me? Then, if my darling

were to come this way as he headed downstairs and outside for a walk, he would find me on the floor, so frightened that my legs would be incapable of holding me up, or else unable to move because of the scratch marks across my face and body.

For a moment I considered retracing my steps. If I went down those stairs right now, and out into the street, and walked around the building and bought a packet of gum from the guard and simply retreated, this would all fade behind me: the snores of that enormous cat, the forbiddingly identical doors, the sweat all over my body, and the trembling in my hands. But I didn’t turn back. I was walking forward inside of my dream.

And so my dream had to walk along with me to its own end. He used to say to me, ‘You are such a stubborn woman.’ He had a point, I knew that. Or maybe he didn’t, maybe this wasn’t really the issue. Perhaps it was just that I had got accustomed to finishing whatever I started. I had to always close the circle. To memorise the whole poem, not just part of it. To keep mounting the stairs, all the way to his home. His home: the thought calmed me down and seemed to stop the sweat, which was threatening to spoil the aromas of my perfume and the soap I’d used, from running down my body. His home: it would be a compact home, with wooden chairs modelled on those in Van Gogh’s Room in Arles. And the sculptures — stone, wood, paper.

These were the centre of his life, the core of his being.

I could not imagine what else there might be in a home of his. A kitchen? A frying pan? Wardrobes with clean, well-organised shelves? Tinned food? A cat? I didn’t know, I couldn’t imagine.

The sculptures took up all the space in my imagination. I was never able to understand how he had so much patience for sculpting. But the more obscure the sources and motives for his art seemed, the more I wanted to embrace everything he was. I imagined myself having a pelican’s throat pouch, like the ones we used to see in the pictures in our elementary school books, which were meant to teach us how to read English. In those illustrations, the pouch was always stuffed with cheese wedges.

I imagined myself opening my mouth to ingest him, swallowing him down into the big, safe hiding place below the pelican’s bill, along with his sculptures which were like nothing else I had ever seen. Every time we met, he gave me something he had crafted himself. Maybe a doll made out of wool with the first letters of my name embroidered on its front. A paper lantern holding a candle

inside. A wooden dove with eyes made of black beads. A hand carved from wood, its fingers spread like wings. A plaster flamingo. Earrings made from tiny lavender globes. Tinted motherof-pearl beads strung into a necklace. He told me he found the mother of pearl by chance in a mountain cave in the interior — not by the sea — and I believed him. He was a magician with hands that were miraculously steady. Whatever raw material he happened on, he knew instinctively what to do with it. If he touched my face, I was certain that he would rearrange its features. He would sculpt it into something new, take possession of it. I would close my hands over his, and he would say, ‘My hands are yours.’ But this was nothing more than a manner of speaking.

As long as his hands had not disappeared inside the ungainly pelican’s bill, they would never be mine.

I tugged at my white shirt, as if I wanted to shake off an imaginary layer of dust, and I headed up the stairs to the third floor. I smelled cooking and heard faint voices from a TV programme.

Standing at the head of the corridor, I could see that one of the four doors along it was slightly open. From it came a woman’s voice. The TV presenter. Or maybe that is where the smell of food was coming from. There was no corridor connecting the two halves of the building on this level either. Suddenly the thought came to me that perhaps this corridor-bridge didn’t exist at all, that each of the two entrances led only to the flats in its own part of the building, and that the only thing I knew for certain was that I was in the wrong part. A little girl slipped out of the slightly open door. Her watery eyes stared at me for a few seconds. I searched my brain for those excuses I had prepared so carefully. But the child didn’t ask me anything. She was clutching what must have been some coins and she galloped down the stairs, her yellow hairband slipping off. Was she going to buy a balloon from the doorman? Or would she cross the street to the sweets shop, eager to strip silvery paper off a little chocolate bar with an ecstasy that would make her forget her tears? I had not imagined the existence of little ones here.

My darling had had a wife at some point in the past, but he didn’t have children. Since he seemed to have great difficulty in managing the business of his daily life, and his communications with others, it was impossible to imagine him surrounded by children. What if I wanted a child with him? I had never posed that question.

A strong beam of light was coming from somewhere. It allowed me to discover that all of these flats had double-digit numbers. That meant the flats carrying single numbers were in the block’s other half, the side I had skirted in order to avoid the entryway guard setting his sights on me. Likely there was also a lift over there, but I was certain that either it didn’t work or my love didn’t use it. He was always telling me how new ideas came to him when he was walking or climbing the stairs. He was a great walker, roaming all over the city. It was his one way of facing up to the world — a world that constantly provoked terror in him.

But the thought of his constant panic simply forced me to realise, standing there in the corridor, how alarmed and frightened I was. If he did not find me — as he was descending the stairs, to take his walk through the city, as he fixed his stare on his own fears — if he did not find me torn to pieces by cats’ claws, then he would find me frozen in place here, immobile in my terror, cowering in this light so strong it made me think of a morgue.

All I could do was to keep going forward. I ascended to the fourth floor. I was beginning to feel dizzy, and I thought I smelled something decaying. I could see immediately that the fourthfloor corridor did not stop just beyond the four doors to the flats.

At the other end, there was what looked like a long walkway lit by a blue lamp. Perhaps, outside, it was still bright daylight, but in this moment my life hung entirely on this thin blue light illuminating the passage. Fewer than twenty steps and I would be on the proper side of the building, very close to my love, and I would know his door right away. Not because my heart would lead me — for my heart was perennially blind — but rather because his wooden door would be carved with his own hands, those hands which remained far away from the pelican’s enormous bill.

I would knock on his door, hard, with my fist, just as he had knocked on the door to my soul with his. When he opened the door, I would delight in the dawning astonishment and disbelief in his eyes, coming over them gradually, the way his eyes changed colour. I always teased him that there was no fixed colour to his eyes. They had been one shade, he always responded, when he was a child; they had been brown. But the colour changed later, because he spent so much time staring into the world. When he opened the door and found me here, he would be so pleased. The remnants of cloth which he was making into a sofa cushion, or perhaps a doll, or a seat for a chair, would fall

from his hand. When he opened the door, we would both be full of delight, and the guard’s balloon would fly away, along with the loud pops of his chewing gum, and all the cats would flee.

I closed my eyes, breathing deeply. It was only a few seconds but when I opened them, I saw a woman walking directly towards me. I twisted my lips into a sort of smile as I tried to make room for her to pass in this very narrow passage. But the woman — an expression on her face that seemed joyful and welcoming but could have been simply wary attention — stopped in front of me and blocked the way.

‘Good morning,’ I said.

She laughed. ‘Good evening to you.’

I made a move to continue on my way, in whatever way I could get by, but the woman standing there in the shadow of the blue lamp did not budge.

‘You aren’t from here,’ she said, ‘Who are you looking for?’

My throat went dry. My love lived alone, and the other residents here must be aware of that. They must be thoroughly familiar with how he kept himself apart, that he was not even in contact with any relatives. Remembering the explanations I had concocted, I slipped off my black rucksack and opened it. The woman was looking at me intently. She did not appear to be in any hurry. I thought she was smiling, but it may have been my imagination. Smiling and scrutinising me, judging my appearance. No, it was more than that: she seemed to know exactly why I was in this corridor connecting the two halves of the building. I took out a packet of brown paper envelopes on which there were carefully written his name and address. I told her that I was delivering these invitations and project proposals, in my capacity as representative of a tourism firm, to the sculptor who lived on the fourth floor. Our company was hoping to conclude an agreement with him to sell some of his works to the tourists. The woman snatched the envelopes with both hands and began turning them over as if it were her name written there. I suspected she might tear them open in the end.

I studied her more closely. She looked exactly like the teachers I used to have at school. Like them, she was wearing

a pale beige-coloured blouse, figured with creeping floral designs and stained with sweat at the underarms, and a baggy brown skirt. The side seams were stretched with long use. She wore a white hijab that was wrapped and pinned with great care, although the fabric itself was threadbare. She had on open-toed slippers. I couldn’t tell if they were house slippers or shoes you could wear in the street. It was impossible to guess whether, for instance, she was paying a visit to her neighbour in the same building or whether she was about to leave the building, starting her commute to a school where she worked. I had made up my mind that she must be a teacher. It didn’t even occur to me that since I had finished school many years before, I would have no idea what teachers looked like now. It was likely that teachers no longer dressed as they had had back then, after all.

She returned the sheaf of envelopes to me silently and I stuffed them into the rucksack. But she didn’t move. She looked me up and down, staring at me from head to toe without any evident hesitation or embarrassment, as if she were working to evaluate my tourism projects. I muttered a few phrases by way of saying a polite goodbye. But the woman seemed to have all the time in the world, not to mention a flat in this building, and rights.

Her face seemed to grow fuller as I watched, as if she had just that moment finished eating her favourite meal. All I would have to see now was the milk dribbling from her chest to form two little wet spots on the floral blouse, for her to become Abla Sanaa, the maths teacher at my school when I was about twelve.

In an utterly ordinary voice, with a perfectly natural intonation, she proposed coming along with me. I thanked her and turned down her offer, my own voice dry and flat, though surely I sounded awkward and anxious. She insisted, ‘I will show you the way from here.’ I told her I knew the way, but she gave no sign of having heard me, as if whatever came out of my mouth was immediately swallowed up by the blue shadow before it reached her. She smiled at me — in fact, it was almost a laugh — and I could see her teeth. They looked strong. I wanted to call out to my beloved; I wanted him to come and help. I wished he could rescue me from this siege, but I knew that he wasn’t capable of rescuing himself, let alone me.

‘Never mind, Abla Sanaa,’ I said, ‘He may not be at home anyway, so I’ll come another time.’

I tried to turn around, to go back, to run, so that finally I would be out in the street, free. But she did not hear me. She gave me no room to escape. She gazed at me steadily. There was no meanness or cunning in her expression; just the confidence of a teacher who caught her pupil cheating in class.

Our blouses close together — beige and white, both showing circles of perspiration — we walked, together, the presumed teacher and the pretend tourist-industry representative. The light tap-tap of the open-toed house slippers echoed and called to the heavier footfalls of the trainers. The full face and the blue-shadowed face which the cats had not attacked marched together; one back ramrod-straight with triumph and the support of long experience, and the other bent beneath the black rucksack holding the brown envelopes and the rose preserved in cellophane, breath mints and a red lipstick. That’s how we walked down the very long corridor, on the fourth floor, into the other half of the building, together, to where the sculptor lived.

Contributors Jokha Alharthi is an Omani writer and academic. She has published three collections of short stories, three novels (Manamat, Sayyidat el-Qamar and Narinjah) and three children’s books. Jokha won the Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature, for her novel Narinjah (Bitter Orange) in 2016. Sayyidat el-Qamar was shortlisted for Zayed Award 2011.

An English translation by Marilyn Booth was published in the UK by Sandstone Press in June 2018 under the title Celestial Bodies and won the Man Booker International Prize 2019. Celestial Bodies has been so far translated into twenty languages including French, Norwegian, Russian, Portuguese, Greek and Chinese.

Rawan AlMahrouqi graduated from Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat. Rawan’s multidisciplinary practice focuses on the female experience in the Arabian Gulf, the double standards, the thin line between tradition and religion. She draws most of her inspiration from her Khaleeji (Arabian Gulf) culture and the experiences she has had growing up and living in the region.

She won the Young Emerging Artist Prize (YEAP) run by Stal Gallery, Muscat, Oman, in 2015. Her work was featured in the Arte documentary Women in Islam. In 2018, Rawan, together with her sisters, founded Makan Studios art school, the first of its kind, offering arts classes to adults and children in Muscat.

Safa Baluchi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spatial Design from the University of Nizwa. She works across performance, video, photography and installation. Her work, which draws on her personal experience, explores questions around the relationship between the individual and the society.

Depression, entrapment and erosion are recurring themes in her work. She won the Young Emerging Artist Prize (YEAP) run

by Stal Gallery, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 and participated in a number of exhibitions at the gallery. In 2018, she curated Disfiguration exhibition at Stal Gallery.

Recent scholarly books are Classes of Ladies of Cloistered Spaces: Writing Feminist History in fin-de-siècle Egypt and Migrating Texts: Circulating Translations around the Ottoman Mediterranean. She is completing a monograph on nineteenth-century feminism in Egypt. She has translated many works of fiction from the Arabic, most recently Jokha Alharthi’s Celestial Bodies, winner of the 2019 Man Booker International Prize, and The Penguin’s Song and No Road to Paradise, by Lebanese novelist Hassan Daoud. She is currently translating Huda Barakat’s Night Post, winner of the 2019 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, and Jokha Alharthi’s most recent novel, Narinjah.

Elina Brotherus works in photography and moving image.

Her work has been alternating between autobiographical and art-historical approaches. Photographs dealing with the human figure and the landscape, the relation of the artist and the model, gave way to images on subjective experiences in her recent bodies of work. In her current work she is revisiting Fluxus event scores and other written instructions for performance-oriented art of the 1950s-70s. Another ongoing interest is photographing in iconic houses by architects such as Alvar Aalto, Hundertwasser and Michel Polak. Elina has been exhibiting widely since 1997 and her work is represented in major public collections including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, MAXXI, Rome, Fondacion ARCO, Madrid, Hasselblad Center, Gothenburg, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, and Museum Folkwang, Essen, to name a few.

Jen Calleja is a writer and literary translator. Her short story collection I’m Afraid That’s All We’ve Got Time For is published

by Prototype. She was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2019 for her translation of Marion Poschmann’s The Pine Islands (Serpent’s Tail) and she was the inaugural Translator in Residence at the British Library.

She writes a column on translation for the Brixton Review of Books and is writing an autofictional work on being a literary translator as part of a PhD at UEA. @niewview

Ruqaiya Mazar graduated from the University of Nizwa in central Oman. Ruqaiya works across drawing, photography, video and digital arts. In her practice, she draws on her experience as an artist living and working within the Arab culture. Her works ask questions about search for balance in human existence, struggle between light and darkness, shadows lurking in the depths of oneself, dreams and failure.

Her work was shown in Oman and Saudi Arabia. She was shortlisted for the Young Emerging Artist Prize (YEAP) run by Stal Gallery, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 and participated in a number of exhibitions at the gallery.

Riham Noor Al Zadjali graduated with BA in Fine Arts from Paris American Academy. In her work, Riham poses questions about the most current global events including conflicts, military interventions, displacement and migration. Her work has been shown widely in Oman. She was shortlisted for the Young Emerging Artist Prize (YEAP) run by Stal Gallery, Muscat, Oman, in 2015. She cofounded the initiative Art with Refugee, a traveling exhibition of artworks by refugees and artists from around the world in support of better living conditions for refugees mostly in Greece. The exhibition was shown in Piraeus, Greece, Children’s Museum of Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, the Human (Art)istic Festival in Brussels, Belgium, as well as in Spain and Oman.

Maria Pakkala is a translator and interpreter. She holds a Master’s Degree in Translation and a PhD in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Helsinki, Finland. She has translated several works from Finnish into Arabic, including non-fiction, novels, poetry, plays and children’s books. She is also a lexicographer and has published an Arabic-Finnish Dictionary in 2008. She was awarded the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for the Best book translated into Arabic in 2012.

Saara Turunen is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning author, playwright and director. Much of her work examines the themes of art, identity and social norms. Turunen is known not only for her two highly acclaimed novels, Love/Monster (2015) and The Bystander (2018), but also for her work in theatre.

Her plays have been translated into numerous languages and performed all around the world. Turunen was awarded the Helsingin Sanomat Literature Prize in 2015, and the Finland Prize in 2016, both high-profile awards given in Finland.

Daisy Vaughan graduated with a first class honors with distinction in her BA in Arabic, Persian and Spanish from the University of Exeter. Since, she has been working as a freelance literary translator in both Spanish and Arabic, and recently worked on a publication for an academic journal of some 14th century Arabic poems on the meaning of words.

She also works as a freelance interpreter in the public sector and for non-governmental organisations, particularly in the refugee resettlement sector.

With more than forty published titles spanning all genres, Owen F. Witesman is the most prolific literary translator ever of Finnish into English. His translations include eleven novels from the Maria Kallio mystery series by Leena Lehtolainen, Sofi Oksanen’s Norma, Salla Simukka’s Sisterland, and Laura Lindstedt’s Oneiron, winner of the Finlandia Prize for Literature.

Owen holds an MA in Finnish and Estonian and a PhD in public affairs from Indiana University. He resides in Springville, Utah, with his wife, three daughters, one son, a dog, a cat, six legal chickens, eight illegal chickens, and twenty-nine fruit trees.

‫تخرجت ديزي فاغون مع شهادة بكالوريوس بمرتبة الشرف األولى‬ ‫وامتياز في اللغة العربية والفارسية واإلسبانية من جامعة إكستر‪ .‬تعمل‬ ‫منذ ذلك الحين كمترجمة أدبية مستقلة باللغتين اإلسبانية والعربية‬ ‫مؤخرا على إصدار لمجلة أكاديمية حول الشعر العربي في‬ ‫وقد عملت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا كمترجمة فورية‬ ‫القرن الرابع عشر حول معنى الكلمات‪ .‬تعمل ً‬ ‫في القطاع العام وللمنظمات غير الحكومية‪ ،‬ال سيما في مجال إعادة‬ ‫توطين الالجئين في بريطانيا‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫منشورا يشمل جميع‬ ‫كتابا‬ ‫يفتخر أوين أف‪ .‬وايتسمان بأكثر من أربعين ً‬ ‫األنواع ولذلك ُيعد المترجم األدبي األكثر غزارة اإلنتاج على اإلطالق‬ ‫من اللغة الفنلندية إلى اللغة اإلنجليزية‪ .‬تشمل ترجماته إحدى عشرة‬ ‫رواية من السلسلة البوليسية ماريا كليو للينا ليهتوالينن‪ ،‬و نورما‬ ‫لسوفي أوكسانين‪ ،‬و سيسترالند لسال سيموكا‪ ،‬ورواية لورا ليندشتيت‬ ‫أنيرون‪ ،‬الحائزة على جائزة فنلندا لألدب‪ .‬حصل أوين على درجة‬ ‫الماجستير في اللغة الفنلندية واإلستونية ودكتوراه في الشؤون العامة‬ ‫من جامعة إنديانا ويقيم اآلن في سبرينغفيل بوالية يوتا مع زوجته‬ ‫وثالث بنات وابن وكلب وقطة وست دجاجات شرعية وثمانية دجاجات‬ ‫غير شرعية وتسع وعشرون شجرة فواكه‪.‬‬

‫تخرجت رقية مزار من جامعة نزوى بوسط عمان وتعمل في مجاالت‬ ‫الرسم والتصوير والفيديو والفنون الرقمية‪ .‬تستعين في ممارستها‬ ‫بتجربتها كفنانة تعيش وتعمل داخل إطار الثقافة العربية‪ .‬تسأل أعمالها‬ ‫أسئلة حول البحث عن التوازن في الوجود اإلنساني والصراع بين النور‬ ‫والظالم والظالل الكامنة في أعماق النفس واألحالم والفشل‪ .‬تم عرض‬ ‫عملها في ُعمان والمملكة العربية وكان اسمها موجود على القائمة‬ ‫المختصرة بأفضل المرشحين لجائزة الفنان الشاب الناشئ في عام‬ ‫‪ )9( 2015‬التي يديرها معرض الفن ستال غاليري في مدينة مسقط‪،‬‬ ‫عاصمة ُعمان وشاركت في العديد من المعارض في نفس المعرض‪.‬‬ ‫تخرجت ريهام نور الزدجالي مع شهادة البكالوريوس في الفنون الجميلة‬ ‫من أكاديمية باريس األمريكية‪ .‬تطرح ريهام في عملها أسئلة حول‬ ‫األحداث العالمية الحالية بما في ذلك النزاعات والتدخالت العسكرية‬ ‫والنزوح والهجرة وقد تم عرض أعمالها على نطاق واسع عبر ُعمان‪.‬‬ ‫وكان اسمها موجود على القائمة المختصرة بأفضل المرشحين لجائزة‬ ‫الفنان الشاب الناشئ في عام ‪ 102015‬التي يديرها معرض الفن‬ ‫ستال غاليري في مدينة مسقط‪ ،‬عاصمة ُعمان‪.‬‬ ‫قامت ريهام بتأسيس مبادرة الفن مع الالجئ‪ ،11‬وهو معرض متنقل‬ ‫لألعمال الفنية لالجئين والفنانين من جميع أنحاء العالم لدعم‬ ‫ظروف معيشية أفضل لالجئين الذين يعيشون معظمهم في اليونان‪.‬‬ ‫ونقل المعرض من بيرايوس باليونان إلى متحف األطفال في‬ ‫ويلمنجتون بوالية نورث كارولينا بالواليات المتحدة األمريكية والمهرجان‬ ‫وعمان‪.‬‬ ‫الفني اإلنساني‪ 12‬في بروكسل ببلجيكا وكذلك في إسبانيا ُ‬ ‫ماريا باكاال مترجمة تحريرية وفورية حاصلة على شهادة الماجستير‬ ‫في الترجمة‪ ،‬وعلى درجة الدكتوراه في اللغة العربية والدراسات‬ ‫اإلسالمية من جامعة هلسنكي‪ /‬فنلندا‪ .‬ترجمت العديد من األعمال من‬ ‫الفنلندية إلى العربية من بينها كتب علمية وروايات ودواوين شعرية‬ ‫ومسرحيات وكتب أطفال‪ .‬كما صدر لها كذلك قاموس عربي فنلندي‬ ‫عام ‪ .2008‬حصلت على جائزة مؤسسة الكويت للتقدم العلمي ألفضل‬ ‫ترجمة إلى اللغة العربية عام ‪.2012‬‬ ‫سارة تورونين مؤلفة وكاتبة مسرحية ومخرجة لقيت استحسانا‬ ‫دوليا وحائزة على جوائز ويبحث الكثير من أعمالها في موضوعات الفن‬ ‫والهوية واألعراف االجتماعية‪ .‬تشتهر تورونين ليس فقط بروايتيها‬ ‫المشهورتين‪ ،‬الحب ‪ /‬الوحش (‪ )201513‬و‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫المتفرج (‪ )142018‬بل ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بأعمالها المسرحية‪ .‬فتمت ترجمة مسرحياتها إلى العديد من اللغات‬ ‫وتم أدائها في جميع أنحاء العالم‪ .‬وحصلت تورونين على جائزة األدب‬ ‫هيلسينغين سانومات‪ 15‬في عام ‪ 2015‬باإلضافة إلى جائزة فنلندا‬ ‫في عام ‪ ،2016‬وكالهما من أبرز الجوائز في فنلندا‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫تتولى مارلين بوث أستاذية خالد بن عبد الله آل سعود لدراسة العالم‬ ‫‪5‬‬ ‫العربي المعاصر في جامعة أكسفورد‪ .‬تشمل كتبها العلمية الحديثة‬ ‫كتاب عن تاريخ النسوية في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر في مصر وكتاب‬ ‫ثاني حول الترجمات في البحر المتوسط العثماني‪ .‬وفي الوقت الحالي‬ ‫تقام بوث بكتابة أفرودة كاملة عن النسوية في القرن التاسع عشر‬ ‫في مصر‪ .‬قد قامت بوث بترجمة العديد من الروايات من اللغة العربية‪،‬‬ ‫وآخرها األجرام السماوية لـجوخة الحارثي الذي فاز بجائزة مان بوكر‬ ‫الدولية في عام ‪ ،2019‬باإلضافة إلى غناء البطريق و ال طريق إلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا على ترجمة كتاب بريد‬ ‫الجنة للكاتب اللبناني حسن داوود‪ .‬تعمل‬ ‫الليل لهدى بركات الحائز على الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية في عام‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وأيضا نارنج وهي أحدث رواية بجوخة الحارثي‪.‬‬ ‫‪2019‬‬ ‫تعمل إيلينا براذاروس في مجالين التصوير الفوتوغرافي والصور المتحركة‬ ‫ويتناوب عملها بين نهجين السيرة الذاتية والفنية التاريخية‪ .‬وأفسحت‬ ‫الصور الفوتوغرافية التي تتناول الشكل اإلنساني والمناظر الطبيعية‬ ‫والعالقة بين الفنان والموديل‪ ،‬المجال أمام الصور المتعلقة بالتجارب‬ ‫الشخصية في مجموعات أعمالها الحديثة‪ .‬وتقوم في عملها الحالي بإعادة‬ ‫سيناريوهات األداء ّ‬ ‫الفنية من مجموعة فالكسوس والتعليمات‬ ‫النظر في‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫المكتوبة األخرى للفن الموجه نحو األداء من الخمسينيات والسبعينيات‬ ‫وواحد من اهتماماتها الجارية األخرى هو القيام بتصوير بعض المنازل‬ ‫المميزة للمهندسين المعماريين مثل الفار آلتو وهوندرتفاسير وميشيل‬ ‫بوالك‪ .‬تم عرضت إيلينا على نطاق واسع منذ عام ‪ 1997‬وتُ مثل أعمالها‬ ‫في مجموعات عامة مهمة في معارض فنية دولية بما في ذلك مركز‬ ‫بومبيدو في باريس ومودرنا ميوزيت في ستوكهولم وماكسي في روما‬ ‫وفونداسيون أركو في مدريد ومركز هاسيلبالد في جوتنبرج ومتحف‬ ‫كياسما للفن المعاصر في هلسنكي ومتحف اإلليزيه في لوزان ومتحف‬ ‫فولكوانغ في إيسن على سبيل المثال ال الحصر‪.‬‬

‫جين كااليا كاتبة ومترجمة أدبية ُ‬ ‫ونشرت مجموعتها للقصص الصغيرة‬ ‫أخشى أن هذا هو كل ما يمكننا القيام به اآلن‪ 6‬من قبل دار النشر‬ ‫بروتوتايب‪ .‬وكان اسمها موجود على القائمة المختصرة بأفضل المرشحين‬ ‫لجائزة مان بوكر الدولية لعام ‪ 2019‬لترجمتها لرواية ماريون بوشمان جزر‬ ‫الصنوبر (ذيل الثعبان)‪ 7‬وكانت المترجمة االفتتاحية في السكن في المكتبة‬ ‫البريطانية‪ .‬تكتب كااليا‬ ‫عمودا عن الترجمة في مجلة استعراض الكتب‪،8‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وتقوم بكتابة سيرة ذاتية خيالية حول تجربتها في الترجمة األدبية كجزء من‬ ‫الدكتوراه في جامعة إيست أنجليا في بريطانية‪niewview@ .‬‬

‫المساهمين‬ ‫جوخة الحارثي كاتبة وأكاديمية عمانية‪ .‬وقد نشرت ثالث مجموعات من‬ ‫ونار ْنج)‬ ‫القصص القصيرة ‪ ،‬ثالث روايات (منامات وسيدات القمر َ‬ ‫وثالثة كتب لألطفال‪ .‬فازت جوخة بجائزة السلطان قابوس للثقافة‬ ‫نارنْ ج في عام ‪ 2016‬واختيرت سيدات القمر‬ ‫والفنون واألدب عن روايتها َ‬ ‫لجائزة زايد ‪ .2011‬تم نشر ترجمة باللغة اإلنجليزية بواسطة مارالين‬ ‫بوث في المملكة المتحدة بواسطة دار النشر “ساندستون بريس”‪ 1‬في‬ ‫‪2‬‬ ‫المملكة المتحدة في يونيو ‪ 2018‬تحت عنوان األجرام السماوية‬ ‫وفاز بجائزة مان بوكر الدولية في عام ‪ .2019‬وقد تمت ترجمة األجرام‬ ‫السماوية حتى اآلن إلى عشرين لغة بما في ذلك الفرنسية والنرويجية‬ ‫والروسية والبرتغالية واليونانية والصينية‪.‬‬ ‫تخرجت روان المحروقي من جامعة السلطان قابوس في مدينة مسقط‪.‬‬ ‫تركز ممارسة ِم ْه َنتة روان متعددة التخصصات على تجربة اإلناث في‬ ‫الخليج والكيل بمكيالين هناك والخط الرفيع بين التقاليد والدين‪.‬‬ ‫تستمد معظم إلهامها من ثقافتها الخليجية والتجارب التي مرت بها في‬ ‫بينما تَ َر ْع َر َعت وعاشت في المنطقة‪ .‬تستمد معظم إلهامها من‬ ‫ثقافتها الخليجية والتجارب التي مرت بها في بينما تَ َر ْع َر َعت وعاشت في‬ ‫المنطقة‪ .‬فازت بجائزة الفنان الشاب الناشئ (‪ )3‬التي يديرها معرض‬ ‫الفن ستال غاليري في مدينة مسقط في عاصمة ُعمان في عام ‪.2015‬‬ ‫وظهرت أعمالها في فيلم وثائقي “المرأة في اإلسالم” على القناة‬ ‫الفرنسية واأللمانية أرت‪ .‬وفي عام ‪ ،2018‬أسست روان وشقيقاتها‬ ‫المدرسة الفنية ماكان ستوديوز‪ ،‬وهي األولى من نوعها التي تقدم‬ ‫دروس الفن للكبار واألطفال في مسقط‪.‬‬ ‫تخرجت صفا البلوشي مع شهادة البكالوريوس في التصميم المكاني‬ ‫من جامعة نزوى وتعمل اآلن في مجاالت األداء والفيديو والتصوير‬ ‫والتركيب ويستعرض عملها الذي يعتمد على تجربتها الشخصية أسئلة‬ ‫حول العالقة بين الفرد والمجتمع وتظهر مواضيع االكتئاب والحصر‬ ‫والتآكل بشكل متكرر‪ .‬فازت البلوشي بجائزة الفنان الشاب الناشئ التي‬ ‫يديرها معرض الفن ستال غاليري في مدينة مسقط‪ ،‬عاصمة ُعمان‬ ‫في عام ‪ 2015‬وشاركت في عدد من المعارض في نفس المعرض‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫عام ‪ ،2018‬قامت بتنظيم معرضا فنيا باسم التشويه‪ 4‬في معرض‬ ‫ستال غاليري‪.‬‬

‫الطابق الرابع‪ ،‬ترغب شركتنا في االتفاق معه لبيع بعض أعماله إلى‬ ‫السياح‪ .‬أمسكت المرأة األغلفة بيديها االثنتين وأخذت تقلبها كأنما‬ ‫ستفضها في النهاية‪ ،‬أخذت‬ ‫شككت أنها‬ ‫اسمها هي المكتوب عليها‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أتأملها‪ ،‬كانت تشبه تماما معلماتي في المدرسة‪ ،‬بالقميص الحليبي‬ ‫المشجرالمبقع بالعرق تحت اإلبطين‪ ،‬والتنورة البنية الواسعة التي ظهرت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البلى وطول االستخدام على جانبيها‪ ،‬والحجاب األبيض المعقود‬ ‫حبيبات ِ‬ ‫بعناية رغم رثاثته‪ ،‬وكانت تنتعل خفا مفتوحا‪ ،‬لم أعرف إن كان بيتيا أو‬ ‫للخروج‪ ،‬ولم أستطع تحديد إن كانت تزور جارتها مثال في نفس البناية‪ ،‬أم‬ ‫قر في خيالي أنها مدرسة‪ ،‬ولم أنتبه إلى‬ ‫ستذهب فورا إلى مدرستها‪ ،‬فقد َّ‬ ‫أني أنهيت المدرسة منذ سنوات طويلة جدا واألرجح أن المعلمات لم‬ ‫يعدن يلبسن على هذه الشاكلة‪ .‬أعادت لي أوراقي بصمت فدسستُ ها في‬ ‫الحقيبة‪ ،‬ولكنها لم تتحرك‪ ،‬نظرت إلي بحرية من رأسي حتى قدمي وكأنها‬ ‫همهمت بشيء ما على سبيل الوداع‪ ،‬ولكن‬ ‫تقيم “مشروعي السياحي”‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫المرأة كانت تملك كل الوقت في العالم‪ ،‬وشقة في هذه البناية‪،‬‬ ‫يبق‬ ‫أنهت للتو وجبتها المفضلة‪ ،‬ولم َ‬ ‫وحقوقا‪ ،‬وازداد وجهها امتالء‪ ،‬كأنها َ‬ ‫إال أن يسيل الحليب من صدرها ويشكل بقعتين على القميص المشجر‬ ‫لتصبح أبلة سناء معلمة الحساب في اإلعدادي‪.‬‬ ‫اقترح ْت بصوت عادي جدا‪ ،‬وبنبرة طبيعية جدا أن ترافقني‪ ،‬شكرتها‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫“سأريك الطريق من‬ ‫فأصرت على اقتراحها‪،‬‬ ‫مرتبكة‪،‬‬ ‫وبنبرة‬ ‫جاف‬ ‫بصوت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يبد عليها أنها سمعتني‪ ،‬كأنما‬ ‫لم‬ ‫ولكن‬ ‫الطريق‪،‬‬ ‫أعرف‬ ‫بأني‬ ‫فقلت‬ ‫هنا”‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫كل ما أقوله يبتلعه الظل األزرق قبل أن يصل إليها‪ ،‬ابتسمت لي‪ ،‬ضحكت‬ ‫رغبت في أن ينقذني‬ ‫أردت االستنجاد بحبيبي‪،‬‬ ‫تقريبا والحت أسنانها قوية‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫من الحصار‪ ،‬ولكني كنت أعلم أنه عاجز عن إنقاذ نفسه‪ ،‬فضال عن إنقاذي‪.‬‬ ‫قلت لها‪“ :‬ال بأس يا أبلة سناء ربما ليس موجودا أصال‪،‬‬ ‫سآتي في وقت آخر”‪،‬‬ ‫وحاولت االستدارة ألعود‪ ،‬وأجري‪ ،‬وأصبح حرة في الشارع‪ ،‬ولكنها لم‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫إلي بغير خبث‪ ،‬ولكن بثقة المعلمة التي‬ ‫ونظرت‬ ‫تفلتني‪،‬‬ ‫ولم‬ ‫تسمعني‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ضبطت التلميذة تغش في حصتها‪.‬‬ ‫المبقعين بدوائر العرق‪ ،‬سرنا جنبا إلى‬ ‫بقميصينا الحليبي واألبيض‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بالخف البيتي‬ ‫معا‪،‬‬ ‫َ‬ ‫جنب‪ ،‬المعلمة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المفترضة ومندوبة السياحة المزيفة‪ً ،‬‬ ‫تتجاوب مع طقطقته خطوات الحذاء الرياضي‪ ،‬بالوجه الطافح والوجه‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫األزرق الذي لم تهاجمه القطط‪ ،‬بالظهر المشدود باالنتصار ومؤازرة الوقت‪،‬‬ ‫والظهر المحني بالحقيبة السوداء ذات األغلفة البنية والوردة المحفوظة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ومنكه الفم بالنعناع وأحمر الشفاه‪ ،‬سرنا في الممر الطويل‪،‬‬ ‫في السيلوفان‬ ‫معا‪ ،‬إلى بيت النحات‪.‬‬ ‫البناية‪،‬‬ ‫من‬ ‫الثاني‬ ‫القسم‬ ‫في‬ ‫الرابع‪،‬‬ ‫في الطابق‬ ‫ً‬

‫الساللم‪ ،‬كان َّ‬ ‫مشاء عظيما‪ ،‬جاب المدينة كلها تقريبا على قدميه‪ ،‬وكانت‬ ‫هذه هي طريقته الوحيدة لمواجهة العالم‪ ،‬عالم طالما أثار ذعره‪ .‬التفكير‬ ‫في الذعر جعلني أدرك أني مذعورة‪ ،‬وإذا لم يجدني وهو ينزل ليجوب‬ ‫المدينة محدقا في خوفه ممزقة بمخالب القطط‪ ،‬فسيجدني متجمدة‬ ‫من الخوف تحت الضوء الساطع‪ ،‬كضوء مشرحة‪.‬‬ ‫صعدت الدرج إلى الطابق الرابع‪ ،‬بدأت‬ ‫ليس أمامي إال المضي قدما‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أشعر بالدوار‪ ،‬وبرائحة عطونة في الجو‪ ،‬لكن الطابق الرابع لم يقفل رواقه‬ ‫على الشقق األربع‪ ،‬بل كان في آخره ممر طويل يضيئه مصباح أزرق‪ ،‬قد‬ ‫يكون الوقت نهارا‪ ،‬لكن حياتي كلها تعلقت اآلن بهذا الضوء النحيل األزرق‬ ‫في الممر الواصل‪ ،‬أقل من عشرين خطوة وأكون في القسم الصحيح من‬ ‫المبنى‪ ،‬وقريبة جدا من حبيبي‪ ،‬وسأعرف بابه على الفور‪ ،‬ليس ألن قلبي‬ ‫دليلي‪ ،‬فقلبي كان أعمى على الدوام‪ ،‬وإنما ألن بابه الخشبي منحوت‬ ‫بيديه اللتين تنأيان عن البقاء في منقار البجعة الضخم‪.‬‬ ‫سأدق باب بيته بقبضتي كما طرق باب روحي بقبضته‪ ،‬وحين يفتح لي‬ ‫سأفرح‪ ،‬بتدرج الدهشة وعدم التصديق في عينيه كما تتدرج ألوانها‪ ،‬كنت‬ ‫أمازحه بالقول أال لون ثابت لعينيه‪ ،‬فيقول أن لونا ما‪ ،‬درجة من البني ربما‪،‬‬ ‫كانت لهما في طفولته‪ ،‬لكن األلوان تحولت بعد ذلك من كثر ما حدق‬ ‫بهما في الدنيا‪ .‬حين يفتح لي سيفرح‪ ،‬وسيفلت من يديه قصاصات‬ ‫األقمشة التي يصنع منها وسادة ربما‪ ،‬أو دمية‪ ،‬أو مقعدا‪ .‬حين يفتح لي‬ ‫سنفرح‪ ،‬وسيطير بالون الحارس مع فقاعات علكته وتهرب كل القطط‪.‬‬ ‫أغمضت عيني وأنا أتنفس بعمق‪ ،‬لحظة وحسب‪ ،‬ولكن حين فتحتهما‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫رأيت امرأة تسير بمواجهتي‪ ،‬تقلصت شفتاي في شبه ابتسامة وحاولت‬ ‫إفساح الطريق لها في الممر الضيق‪ ،‬ولكن المرأة‪ ،‬بوجه طافح‪ ،‬ال أدري‬ ‫وسدت الطريق‪.‬‬ ‫بالبشر أم بالتحفز‪ ،‬وقفت أمامي مباشرة‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قلت‪ :‬صباح الخير‪،‬‬ ‫ضحكت‪ :‬مساء النور‪.‬‬ ‫هممت بالحركة‪ ،‬كيفما اتفق‪ ،‬ولكن المرأة الواقفة في ظل المصباح‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫األزرق لم تتزحزح‪،‬‬ ‫سألتني‪ِ :‬‬ ‫أنت لست من هنا‪ ،‬عمن تبحثين؟‬

‫جف حلقي‪ ،‬فحبيبي يعيش وحيدا‪ ،‬وال بد أن باقي السكان يعلمون‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫تذكرت الحجج‪ ،‬فأنزلت حقيبة ظهري‬ ‫بوحدته وانقطاعه عن أي أقارب‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫السوداء الرياضية‪ ،‬وفتحتها‪ ،‬والمرأة التي ال تبدو على أي عجلة من أمرها‬ ‫تقيم مظهري‪ ،‬ال‪ ،‬بل أكثر من ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫إلي أنها تبتسم ‪ ،‬وأنها ِّ‬ ‫إلي‪ُ ،‬خِّيل ّ‬ ‫تنظر ّ‬ ‫أخرجت رزما من األغلفة‬ ‫كانت تعرف تماما لماذا أنا في الممر الواصل‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫البنية‪ ،‬مكتوب عليها اسمه وعنوانه بعناية‪ ،‬وقلت لها بأني أوصل هذه‬ ‫الدعوات والمشاريع باعتباري مندوبة لشركة سياحية إلى النحات في‬

‫علي أن أغلقها‪ ،‬أن أحفظ القصيدة حتى آخرها وأن‬ ‫ترك دائرة مفتوحة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يهدئني‪ ،‬ويمنع العرق الخفيف من‬ ‫أصعد الساللم حتى بيته‪ُّ .‬‬ ‫تخيل بيته ّ‬ ‫كراس خشبية‬ ‫التدفق وإفساد رائحة صابوني وعطري‪ ،‬بيت صغير‪ ،‬فيه‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫منسوخة من لوحة “غرفة في آرل” لفان جوخ‪ ،‬ومنحوتات من الحجر‬ ‫والخشب والورق هي محور حياته وجوهر روحه‪ ،‬ال أقدر على تصور أي‬ ‫شيء آخر في بيته؛ مطبخ؟ مقالة؟ خزائن بأرفف نظيفة؟ معلبات؟‬ ‫قط؟ ال أدري‪ ،‬المنحوتات تستحوذ على خيالي‪ ،‬لم أفهم أبدا كيف يمتلك‬ ‫هذا الصبر كله على النحت‪ ،‬كلما ازدادت منابع فنه غموضا ازدادت رغبتي‬ ‫تخيلت نفسي بمنقار البجعة الضخم الذي كان مرسوما في‬ ‫في احتوائه‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫كتب االبتدائي لتعليم القراءة باالنجليزية محشوا بقطع الجبن المثلثة‪،‬‬ ‫وأنا أفتح فمي ألتهمه وأخزّ نه في مخبأ البجعة مع منحوتاته الفريدة‪ .‬كلما‬ ‫التقينا أهداني شيئا صنعه بنفسه‪ :‬دمية صوفية مطرز عليها الحرف‬ ‫األول من اسمي‪ ،‬فانوس ورقي في داخله شمعة‪ ،‬حمامة خشبية عيونها‬ ‫يد خشبية أصابعها تشبه الجناح‪ ،‬طائر الفالمنكو من الجص‪،‬‬ ‫خرز أسود‪ٌ ،‬‬ ‫أقراط صغيرة بنفسجية‪ ،‬صدف ملون منظوم في عقد‪ .‬قال بأنه عثر على‬ ‫وصدقتُ ه‪ ،‬كان ساحرا بيدين‬ ‫الصدف في كهف جبلي ال في شاطئ‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لمس وجهي‬ ‫قبض على خامة أتى بالفتنة‪ ،‬وإذا‬ ‫ثابتتين كالمعجزة‪ ،‬كلما‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫طب ُق على يديه‬ ‫أعرف أنه سيعيد تشكيله‪ ،‬سينحته من جديد‪،‬‬ ‫ويتملكه‪ُ .‬أ ِ‬ ‫فيقول‪ :‬يداي ِ‬ ‫لك‪ ،‬ولكن هذا كان مجرد مجاز‪ ،‬مالم تدخل اليدان فم‬ ‫البجعة القبيحة فلن تكونا لي أبدا‪.‬‬ ‫وارتقيت الدرج إلى الطابق‬ ‫شددت قميصي األبيض كأنما ألنفضه‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫شممت رائحة طبخ‪ ،‬وسمعت أصواتا خافتة لبرنامج تلفزيوني‪،‬‬ ‫الثالث‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وقفت في الممر على حافتيه الشقق األربع‪ ،‬كان باب إحداها شبه‬ ‫وحين‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫مفتوح‪ ،‬ومنه ينساب صوت المذيعة أو رائحة الطعام‪ ،‬ولم يكن الممر‬ ‫الواصل بين قسمي البناية هناك‪ ،‬وخطر لي فجأة أنه ربما ال وجود لهذا‬ ‫الممر إطالقا‪ ،‬وكل مدخل لهذا المبنى يفضي إلى جزء منفصل‪ ،‬والشيء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫انسلت طفلة من باب الشقة الموارب‪،‬‬ ‫المؤكد هو أنني في الجزء الخطأ‪.‬‬ ‫إلي لبرهة بعينين دامعتين‪ ،‬ففتشت في رأسي عن الحجج التي‬ ‫نظرت ّ‬ ‫حضرتها‪ ،‬غير أن الطفلة لم تسألني شيئا‪ ،‬أحكمت قبضتها الصغيرة على‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ما يبدو أنه نقود وقفزت الساللم هابطة‪ ،‬وشريط شعرها األصفر يكاد‬ ‫ُّ‬ ‫ينحل‪ ،‬هل ستشري البالون من الحارس؟ أم ستعبر الشارع لدكان الحلويات‬ ‫فتقشر الغالف المفضض للشوكوال بفرح ينسيها دموعها؟ لم أتصور‬ ‫وجود صغار هنا‪ ،‬كان لحبيبي امرأة في زمن ما‪ ،‬ولكن لم يكن له أطفال‪،‬‬ ‫وإذ كان يجد صعوبة بالغة في تدبير شؤون الحياة اليومية‪ ،‬والتعامل مع‬ ‫رغبت أنا في‬ ‫البشر‪ ،‬فإن مشهده محاطا بأطفال ال يمكن تصوره‪ .‬ماذا لو‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫طفله؟ لم أسأله هذا قط‪.‬‬ ‫ضوء ساطع يأتي من مكان ما‪ ،‬وأنا أكتشف أن لجميع الشقق أرقاما‬ ‫زوجية‪ ،‬إذن فالشقق حاملة األرقام الفردية هي في القسم اآلخر من هذه‬ ‫البناية‪ ،‬القسم الذي تجنبته هربا من أن يقتنصني الحارس على بابه‪ .‬لعل‬ ‫مصعدا أيضا في ذلك القسم‪ ،‬ولكن المؤكد أنه ال يعمل أو أن حبيبي ال‬ ‫يستخدمه‪ ،‬إذ يحدثني كيف تأتيه األفكار الجديدة وهو يمشي أو يصعد‬

‫تفحصها عن ُبعد ألتأكد من شكل شرفاتها‪ ،‬التي قد يقف حبيبي اآلن‬ ‫في‪ ،‬أو يشرب شايه الثقيل‬ ‫على أحدها متكئا على الدرابزين يدخن ويفكر ّ‬ ‫في‪.‬‬ ‫بالهيل وال يفكر ّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫حرصت قبل خروجي أن ألبس ثيابا ال‬ ‫وكنت قد‬ ‫بثقة مصطنعة‪،‬‬ ‫دخلت‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وحشرت الوردة النضرة في حقيبتي‪،‬‬ ‫تثير االنتباه‪ ،‬وأال أضع زينة على وجهي‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫صادفت‬ ‫أعددت منذ األمس الحجج الالزمة لوجودي هنا في حال‬ ‫وكذلك‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وسرت بحذائي الرياضي على‬ ‫تنفست بعمق‪،‬‬ ‫رفعت رأسي‪،‬‬ ‫أحدا‪ ،‬وهكذا‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫لمحت‬ ‫أذني‪.‬‬ ‫يصم‬ ‫رخام الدرج‪ ،‬لكن قلبي كان من الصخب بحيث أوشك أن‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫قصة يابانية عن عجوز سقطت‬ ‫تذكرت‬ ‫يمرق من بيت السلم‪،‬‬ ‫قطا أسود‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫في غيبوبة فافترستها قططها بعدما كادت تهلك جوعا في البيت المقفل‪.‬‬ ‫تخيلت حشدا من القطط‪ ،‬ستهاجمني وتدميني‪ ،‬وحين ينزل حبيبي ليشتري‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫حاجياته سيجدني جثة ممزقة‪ ،‬ولكن الطابق األرضي كان هادئا في الحقيقة‬ ‫رغم ّ‬ ‫قطه العابر وعتمته الخفيفة واجتزته بسالم إلى الطابق األول‪.‬‬ ‫أفضى بي الدرج إلى ممر أقل إعتاما على جانبيه أربع شقق متقابلة‪،‬‬ ‫اضطررت للمشي فيه من أقصاه إلى أقصاه بحثا عن الممر الرابط بين‬ ‫جزئي البناية‪ ،‬ولكن لم يكن ثمة ممر‪ .‬بدأت أتعرق بشكل خفيف وأنا‬ ‫أصعد الدرج للطابق الثاني‪ ،‬ولم أستطع كبح جماح التفكير في أني‬ ‫أصبحت مثله؛ أتعرق حين أتوتر‪ ،‬وقد كان هو متوترا أغلب الوقت‪،‬‬ ‫هشت من األشياء الصغيرة الالنهائية التي توتره‪،‬‬ ‫ومتعرقا‪ .‬في البدء ُد‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫نشأت على البساطة في حياتي وتعقيده أثار دهشتي‪ .‬ثم تكيفت‬ ‫فأنا قد‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫مع قلقه بمرور الوقت‪ ،‬وتعلمت كيف أتغاضى عن مبالغاته الدرامية في‬ ‫كنت أمضي‬ ‫مواقف تبدو لي تافهة وال تستحق حتى التفكير فيها‪ .‬ربما‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫بال وعي في طريق التشبه به‪ ،‬وها أنا في الطابق الثاني‪ ،‬ويداي ترجفان‬ ‫اكتشفت أال ممر هنا غير الممر الرئيس وعلى جانبيه الشقق‬ ‫قليال إذ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫األربع‪ ،‬المتطابقة الشكل تقريبا مع شقق الطابق األول‪ ،‬وقفت أمام‬ ‫إحداها أستعيد أنفاسي‪ ،‬خشب الباب المغلق محفور بتشكيالت هندسية‪،‬‬ ‫إلي إني أسمع صوت شخير‪ ،‬ربما ال يكون شخير رجل‪ ،‬ماذا لو كان‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وخِّيل ّ‬ ‫علي‬ ‫وينقض‬ ‫الباب‬ ‫خلف‬ ‫المرتبك‬ ‫وجودي‬ ‫يحدس‬ ‫ضخم‪،‬‬ ‫قط‬ ‫شخير‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بمخالبه؟ إذا نزل حبيبي للتنزه سيجدني مرمية هناعاجزة عن الوقوف من‬ ‫الخوف والخموش‪.‬‬ ‫فكرت للحظة في التراجع‪ ،‬لو نزلت الساللم اآلن وخرجت للشارع‬ ‫وقفلت راجعة النتهى‬ ‫ودرت حول البناية واشتريت علبة علكة من الحارس‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫كل شيء‪ :‬شخير القط الضخم‪ ،‬واألبواب المتشابهة‪ ،‬والتعرق والرجفة‪.‬‬ ‫كنت أمشي داخل حلمي‪ ،‬وعلى حلمي أن يمشي معي‬ ‫لكني لم أستدر‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫إلى منتهاه‪ .‬كان يقول لي‪ :‬أنت عنيدة‪ ،‬أعرف أنه محق‪ .‬أو ربما ليس‬ ‫تعودت فقط أن أكمل كل شيء أبدأه‪ ،‬وال أستطيع ببساطة‬ ‫محقا‪ ،‬ربما‬ ‫ُ‬

‫قررت أن أزور الرجل الذي أحب‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫اخترت أكثر األوقات عادية‪ ،‬ربما الضحى أو العصر‪ .‬إذن كان الوقت ضحى‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وكنت في الشارع الذي يحمل اسم ملك الجان والرياح‪ ،‬لكني لم‬ ‫أو عصرا‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أفلح في تحديد مدخل البناية‪ ،‬إذ كانت البنايات متشابهة واألرقام ممحوة‪،‬‬ ‫وكنت أعرف أن للبناية بابين‪ ،‬باب أمامي يجلس قدامه حارس‪ ،‬وأمام‬ ‫الحارس صناديق مقلوبة مصفوف عليها علب سجائر وعلكة ومحايات‬ ‫ملونة ومسابح فضية وأقالم رصاص وبالونات مطفأة في أكياسها‬ ‫الشفافة‪ ،‬والحارس ال ينادي على بضاعته‪ ،‬بل يتصرف كأنه خجل منها نوعا‬ ‫ما‪ ،‬فيجلس على مبعدة نافثا دخان سجائره بحيث ال يبدو متعلقا بتجارته‬ ‫الصغيرة‪ ،‬وعلى مقربة بحيث ال تغدو هدفا سهال للصوص الصغار‪.‬‬ ‫أما الباب الخلفي فكان غير محروس‪ ،‬غير أن الشقق التي يفضي‬ ‫إليها غير متصلة بالشقق التي يفضي إليها الباب المحروس‪ ،‬إال في أحد‬ ‫الطوابق‪ ،‬حيث يربط ممر طويل بين قسمي البناية‪ ،‬األمامي والخلفي‪،‬‬ ‫وكنت ال أعرف أي طابق هو‪ .‬غلب على ظني أن الباب الخشبي الثقيل‬ ‫الكالح هذا هو المدخل الثاني‪ ،‬وأن البناية هي هذه‪ ،‬رغم أني ال أستطيع‬

‫وشاهدت في األخبار لقاء مع تلميذة مدرسة خالل حفل‪.‬‬ ‫الرجال عادة‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وس ِمح‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫تلقى كل التالميذ دعوة إلى بيت رئيس البلدية لالحتفال بالعيد ُ‬ ‫لهم بالرقص خالل الحفل‪ .‬كان في هيئة تلك الفتاة شيء من الحيوية‬ ‫والنشاط مع أنها كانت ترتدي فستانا مكشكشا رقيقا‪“ .‬يا لها من هدية‬ ‫رائعة أن نُ دعى إلى هنا‪ ”.‬قالت الفتاة بصوت عال‪ .‬ومرة أخرى بكيت‪.‬‬ ‫حرك مشاعري‪.‬‬ ‫امتنان الفتاة ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ماضي‪ ،‬وربما في ثقافتي كذلك‪ ،‬يجعلني أجد‬ ‫أعتقد أن شيئا ما في‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫صعوبة في التعبير عن الخير وعن المشاعر اإليجابية‪ .‬ال ُأ ّ‬ ‫فكر بالطريقة التي‬ ‫نشأت فيه حيث كان والداي ُي ّ‬ ‫ؤكدان أن اإلطراء‬ ‫يت عليها في البيت الذي‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ّرب ُ‬ ‫ُي ِّ‬ ‫علم اإلنسان العجرفة‪ .‬على العكس من ذلك‪ ،‬أعتقد أن علينا أن نشيد‬ ‫باألمور الجميلة في الناس باستمرار‪ .‬ولكن وفي الوقت ذاته‪ ،‬أجد صعوبة في‬ ‫إخراج تلك الكلمات من فمي‪ .‬ما زلت أجد صعوبة في التعبير عن مشاعري‬ ‫لآلخرين‪ ،‬ومازلت أميل لرؤية السلبيات بسهولة أكبر من رؤيتي لإليجابيات‪.‬‬ ‫ولكن‪ ،‬لقد حالفني الحظ في حياتي ألنني تمكنت من تكريس نفسي‬ ‫للعمل الفني‪ .‬تعلمت إنتاج األعمال الفنية‪ ،‬واإلشارة إلى السلبيات‪،‬‬ ‫وإظهار األمور التي ال أنظر إليها بعين الرضا‪ .‬في اآلونة األخيرة فقط بدأت‬ ‫أتساءل كيف يمكنني إبراز جمال الحياة وروعتها‪ .‬هل يمكنني أن أفعل شيئا‬ ‫يبعث على الفرح؟ ال أعرف‪ .‬ولكنني قررت توجيه نظري إلى ذلك االتجاه‪.‬‬

‫أحاسيس وأفكار تقود عادة إلى كلمات وأعمال‪ .‬بل إنها أحيانا قد تهدم‬ ‫الجسور أو تساعد على تغيير السلطة‪.‬‬ ‫غير أن عرض العمل الفني على الجمهور بالنسبة للفنان قد يمثل‬ ‫تحديا في بعض األحيان‪ .‬فإن بعض الفنانين‪ ،‬بسبب الخوف والنقد‬ ‫الذاتي والرعب من أن ُيحكم عليهم‪ ،‬ال يملكون الشجاعة الكافية لالنتقال‬ ‫تصورهم عن قدراتهم‬ ‫إلى هذه المرحلة أبدا‪ ،‬بل يتركون أعمالهم مختبئة‪.‬‬ ‫ُّ‬ ‫قد يكون واقعيا أكثر من تصور أي فنان آخر استطاع تجاوز تلك الحدود‪.‬‬ ‫ولكن في الوقت ذاته‪ ،‬النتيجة أن أعمالهم ال تحظى بفرصة الوصول إلى‬ ‫تلك اللحظة الضرورية للفن والتي يبدأ فيها العمل في التأثير في العالم‪.‬‬ ‫أعتقد أنه ليس ثمة طريقة خاطئة أو صحيحة يمكن لصدى العمل أن‬ ‫يتردد من خاللها‪ .‬فصداه يتردد بطريقة مختلفة حسب الزمان والمكان‬ ‫وحسب المتفرج والمتلقي‪ .‬الفنان ال يمكنه أن يكون مسؤوال عن األثر‬ ‫الذي يحدثه العمل في المتلقي‪ .‬ذلك أن العمل بمجرد أن يصبح جاهزا‪،‬‬ ‫يبدأ حياته الخاصة به‪.‬‬ ‫كلمة فنان كلمة مشحونة بالمعاني‪ ،‬وما زال أول ما يخطر على بالي‬ ‫عند سماعها هو رجل عظيم عاش ومات منذ زمن طويل‪ ،‬وأصبح السياح‬ ‫يصطفون لزيارة قبره‪“ .‬كان فنانا‪ ”،‬يقول السياح ويبتسمون وهم‬ ‫ُم ِ‬ ‫جمعون على األمر‪ .‬يجدون ضمن تِ ْر َكة الفنان مالبسه الداخلية ويبيعونها‬ ‫في المزاد العلني بسعر باهض‪ .‬وخالل المزاد‪ ،‬يحملها أحد أمناء المتحف‬ ‫وهو يرتدي قفازات خاصة بالعمل المتحفي‪.‬‬ ‫لذلك‪ ،‬عادة ما يبدو اإلنسان الذي يدعو نفسه فنانا متغطرسا بعض‬ ‫الشيء خاصة إذا صادف أن ذلك الفنان امرأة صغيرة الحجم‪ ،‬بل وال تزال‬ ‫قررت أن أدعو نفسي فنانة ألن هوية‬ ‫على قيد الحياة كذلك‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪ ،‬فقد َّ‬ ‫الفنان في رأيي ترتبط أوال وقبل كل شيء بالعمل اليومي‪ .‬ومن ناحية أخرى‪،‬‬ ‫فأنا ُم َّ‬ ‫متنة جدا ألنني تمكنت من بدأ العمل بعد الكثير من التردد‪ .‬ذلك أنني‬ ‫حدد بخواتم خارجية وإنما تحدد بمتابعة العمل على‬ ‫أعتقد أن هوية الفنان ال تُ َّ‬ ‫الرغم من كل شيء؛ أن يتابع المرء الغناء والرقص والرسم حتى لو كان‬ ‫دائما على ذلك‪ .‬أن أدعو نفسي فنانة هو أوال‬ ‫العالم من حوله ال يشجعه‬ ‫ً‬ ‫علي العمل وعدم االنتظار إلى أن أموت‬ ‫بأن‬ ‫لنفسي‬ ‫وقبل كل شيء تذكير‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫لكي يأتي رجل رفيع المستوى ويرفع عملي إلى المنصة في صالون مرموق‪.‬‬ ‫قررت أن أكون فنانة وأنا ال أزال على قيد الحياة‪ .‬هذا كل ما في األمر‪.‬‬ ‫لقد‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫الحظت مؤخرا أن اللطف والبوادر الطيبة على وجه الخصوص تحرك‬ ‫مشاعري‪ .‬قد يكون سبب هذا أن العمر قد تقدم بي ولم أعد أقوى على‬ ‫تحمل األخبار العنيفة وال األعمال الفنية الصادمة‪ .‬لكنني‪ ،‬من ناحية‬ ‫أخرى‪ ،‬أعتقد أن إظهار الخير والجمال في الحياة وكذلك في الفن يمثل‬ ‫والعبوس‪.‬‬ ‫تحديا أكبر بكثير من الكآبة‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قرأت كتابا يراجع فيه الكاتب أحاسيسه بشأن والده الذي يرقد على‬ ‫فراش الموت‪ .‬قبل موت األب‪ ،‬تمكن الكاتب من أن يعبر له عن تقديره‬ ‫له‪ .‬هذه النقطة بالذات أبكتني‪ .‬بكيت كذلك عندما نظرت إلى صورة‬ ‫َر ُجلين من قدامى المحاربين ماتت زوجتاهما منذ عشرات السنين وبقيا‬ ‫يجلسان على األريكة جنبا إلى جنب وهما يمسكان بيدي بعضهما‪.‬‬ ‫إمساكهما بيدي بعضهما أمر فيه قدر كبير من الجمال‪ ،‬وهو أمر ال يفعله‬

‫كتبت مسرحية ولكنني لم أجد لها ُمخرجا‪.‬‬ ‫في نهاية مشوار الدراسي‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لعل أحدهم يستطيع‬ ‫سألت كل من صادفتهم وكل رفاق الدراسة‬ ‫إال أنهم جميعا كانوا مشغولين؛ أو ربما لم ُيثر عرضي‬ ‫مساعدتي َّ‬ ‫اهتمامهم هكذا دون سبب معين‪ .‬كانت لديهم مشاريعهم الخاصة بهم‪.‬‬ ‫علي أحد الفنانين المخضرمين بأن أخرج مسرحيتي‬ ‫وفي األخير‪ ،‬أشار‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وإال فإن أحدا لن يخرجها ولن ترى نور الشمس أبدا‪ .‬هذه الفكرة‬ ‫بنفسي َّ‬ ‫كانت فظيعة جدا‪ ،‬ولذلك عكفت على العمل ولو أنني كنت غير واثقة في‬ ‫نفسي‪ .‬وأدركت بعد بدء العمل بوقت قصير أن إخراج المسرحية لم يكن‬ ‫صعبا أبدا‪ ،‬بل على العكس من ذلك كان ً‬ ‫وم َن َحني إحساسا‬ ‫أمرا أثرى عقلي َ‬ ‫بأن للحياة مغزى‪ .‬ما كان أصعب وأفظع بكثير هو الخوف الذي سبق بدء‬ ‫اإلخراج‪ .‬أثناء االنهماك في العمل‪ ،‬تالشت الظنون‪ ،‬وانفتح أمامي منظر‬ ‫جديد‪ .‬هذه األحداث كان لها تأثير جوهري على مستقبلي‪ .‬ال شك أنني‬ ‫خطوت‬ ‫واجهت صعوبات كثيرة فيما بعد كذلك‪ ،‬ولكن األهم أنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫مراقبة إلى ِ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫فاعلة‪.‬‬ ‫وتحولت من‬ ‫الخطوة األولى‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫���‬ ‫عندما وصلتني قبل أيام قليلة رسالة ُي َ‬ ‫طل ُب مني فيها الكتابة عن موضوع‬ ‫الرنين‪ ،‬ذهبت أوال إلى محرك البحث غوغل وبحثت عن معنى تلك‬ ‫وجدت في موسوعة ويكيبيديا مقالة تتحدث عن القوانين‬ ‫الكلمة‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫تُ‬ ‫قوةٌ ما على جزئية أو مادة فتجعلها‬ ‫بفعلها‬ ‫ر‬ ‫ؤث‬ ‫التي‬ ‫الفيزيائية‬ ‫والظواهر‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تحطم الريح جسرا خرسانيا مثال‪ ،‬أو أن تتكسر األمواج على‬ ‫تهتز‪ .‬كأن‬ ‫ُّ‬ ‫الشاطئ‪ ،‬أو أن تهتز األوتار فينتج عن ذلك موسيقى‪ .‬تحطم الجسور‬ ‫وانكسار األمواج واهتزاز األوتار في رأيي أمور جميلة جدا‪ ،‬قوية بشكل ما‪.‬‬ ‫وهكذا حاولت أن ّ‬ ‫أفكر لعلها تُ َو ّلد شيئا ما في خلدي‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫رت بادئ ذي بدء في الفن وفي هوية الفنان‪ ،‬ربما ألن التواصل‬ ‫فك ُ‬ ‫والمشاركة في نظري هما جزء ال يتجزأ من الفن‪ .‬تلك اللحظة التي يلتقي‬ ‫فيها العمل الفني بمتلقيه فينشأ عن ذلك اهتزاز‪ ،‬ينشأ عن ذلك رنين‪.‬‬ ‫ومن جهة أخرى ألن الناس عندما يتحدثون عن الفنانين غالبا ما‬ ‫يت على تلك الفكرة القائلة‬ ‫تسمعهم يتحدثون عن الموهبة‪ .‬أنا كذلك ُر ّب ُ‬ ‫بأن الفنانين أشخاص استثنائيون‪ .‬غير أنني أعتقد أن الموهبة ما هي إال‬ ‫جزء صغير جدا مما يصنع من اإلنسان فنانا‪ .‬كل األطفال يولدون‬ ‫مفعمين بالمواهب الفطرية‪ ،‬يحبون الغناء والرقص والرسم‪ .‬من نافلة‬ ‫القول إن بعضهم ُيحسن الغناء أكثر من البعض اآلخر‪ ،‬وبعضهم‬ ‫يستطيع رسم بيت ثالثي األبعاد بسهولة أكبر من أقرانه‪ ،‬ولكن هذا غير‬ ‫ذي أهمية كبرى في نهاية المطاف‪ .‬المهم فعال هو متابعة األنشطة‬ ‫اإلبداعية على أي حال‪ ،‬وإطالع اآلخرين عليها دون االكتراث للنقد الذي‬ ‫يوجهونه لها‪.‬‬ ‫قد ّ‬ ‫قراء أو‬ ‫أعتقد أن األعمال تحتاج إلى جمهور‪ ،‬إلى ُمستمعين‪ ،‬إلى ّ‬ ‫إلى متفرجين؛ وأعتقد أنها في الحقيقة غير موجودة قبل أن تُ رفع من‬ ‫األدراج وتُ عرض على الناس‪ .‬حينئذ فقط‪ ،‬تُ بعث الروح في األعمال‪،‬‬ ‫وتبدأ في شغل وظيفتها‪ ،‬في االهتزاز في خلد الناس‪ ،‬وفي إنتاج‬

‫مهاراتي في التزحلق على الثلج لم تَ ُع ْد ذات فائدة‪ .‬فلم يكن أحد يتزحلق‬ ‫ثمة ثلج على طرقاتها‬ ‫على الثلج في العاصمة هلسنكي إذْ لم يكن َّ‬ ‫سريعا أن الكتابة‬ ‫أساسا‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪ ،‬شققت طريقي إلى األمام وأدركت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫هي الشيء الوحيد الذي ال يرتبط بما فعله اإلنسان من قبل‪ .‬إذا كان المرء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ويخط أفكاره على الورقة‪ ،‬فذلك يكفي‪.‬‬ ‫قادرا على أن يمسك القلم بيده‬ ‫طر على أولئك‬ ‫ي‬ ‫لم‬ ‫أنه‬ ‫األمر‬ ‫في‬ ‫والغريب‬ ‫علي‪.‬‬ ‫أتذكر أن األستاذ أطرى‬ ‫ُ ِ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫علي أنا التي ال ينتظر أحد منها‬ ‫الذين ينحدرون من ُأ ٍ‬ ‫سر عريقة وإنما أطرى َّ‬ ‫معرفة أي شيء‪ .‬وهذا جعلني أنتظر تلك الحصص بشغف‪ ،‬وجعلني‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جهرا‪.‬‬ ‫أكتب في الليالي بطولها‪ ،‬وأقرأ نصوصي‬ ‫فت على فتاة تنتمي إلى ذلك العالم اآلخر بكل ما في الكلمة‬ ‫تعر ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫من معنى‪ .‬تنحدر من أسرة هلسنكية عريقة‪ ،‬تمارس الرقص الحديث‬ ‫وتعزف على آلة التشيللو‪ .‬أحببتها كثيرا َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المتمثلة‬ ‫وعلمتها بعض مهاراتي‬ ‫في استعمال المشروبات الكحولية بإفراط والسرقة من المتاجر‪ .‬أعتقد‬ ‫أن تلك الفتاة أحبتني أيضا ووجدت في مهاراتي شيئا مثيرا‪ ،‬وهكذا‬ ‫أصبحنا صديقتين‪.‬‬ ‫ومرت األيام‪ ،‬وشاءت ظروف مختلفة أن ينتهي بي المطاف في‬ ‫المدرسة العليا للفنون المسرحية لدراسة فن التأليف المسرحي‪ .‬هذه‬ ‫تجرأت أصال‬ ‫المدرسة كانت ذات سمعة رفيعة‪ ،‬ولذلك أستغرب اآلن أنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫التقدم المتحان ولوجها‪ .‬ولكن سبب جرأتي هو أن صديقتي تلك‬ ‫على‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كانت قد حظيت بفرصة دخول المدرسة العليا للفنون المسرحية لدراسة‬ ‫قسم يتخرج منه ُ‬ ‫الكتّ اب‪.‬‬ ‫التمثيل‪ ،‬وكانت قد أخبرتني أن في المدرسة‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫وباإلضافة إلى ذلك‪ ،‬أتذكر أنني كنت مفتونة بسمعة تلك المؤسسة‬ ‫باعتبارها مدرسة فنون تحديدا‪ .‬كان لدي انطباع بأن َم ْن يدرسون هناك‬ ‫يفعلون ما يحلو لهم‪ ،‬يكرسون حياتهم كلها لخدمة الفن‪ ،‬ويذهبون إلى‬ ‫ويتدبرون في قضايا‬ ‫المدرسة بالبيجامة‪ ،‬ويدخنون السجائر أمام المقهى‪،‬‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫الحياة الهامة بدل التفكير في أمور الدنيا العادية‪ .‬وهذا ما أردت فعله أنا‬ ‫أيضا‪ .‬حالفني الحظ ونجحت في ولوج المدرسة‪ .‬وصرفت في ذلك‬ ‫المسار الدراسي ما مجموعه ثمان سنوات دون أن تصنع مني تلك‬ ‫السنين فنانة‪ .‬لم أتمكن من اعتبار نفسي فنانة بأي شكل من األشكال‪.‬‬ ‫نوع من الخواتم التي ُيختم بها المرء من‬ ‫كنت‬ ‫أتصور أن هوية الفنان ٌ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫علي وعلى كينونتي تلك الشرعية فأنا‬ ‫الخارج‪ .‬انتظرت أن ُيضفي أحدهم َّ‬ ‫لم أجرؤ على إضفاء الشرعية على أي شيء‪ .‬كانت كلمات والدتي ال تزال‬ ‫تتردد في ذاكرتي‪ ،‬وكان شيء ما بداخلي يؤمن تماما أنني ال أفقه شيئا‬ ‫في أي شيء وأنني َ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التطلع إلى األعلى‪.‬‬ ‫أفرطت في‬ ‫أمال إذا‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫يب ً‬ ‫سأ ِخ ُ‬ ‫بشكل عام‪ ،‬فكرة الذاتية كانت فكرة غريبة عني‪ .‬لم ّ‬ ‫أتعلم التفكير بأن‬ ‫بإمكاني أن أمسك بزمام مصيري وأن أنجز األمور بنفسي‪ .‬بعد كل تلك‬ ‫علي العثور على رجل يقبل بي فتُ َح َّل بذلك‬ ‫السنين‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫كنت ال أزال أتخيل أن َّ‬ ‫واعتقدت أنه سيأتي‬ ‫مشاكل حياتي‪ .‬انتظرت ذلك الرجل سنوات عديدة‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وينجز نيابة عني كل األعمال الفنية التي كنت أود القيام بها‪ .‬تبدو‬ ‫يوما ما ُ‬ ‫الفكرة سخيفة للغاية اآلن بالنظر إلى الوراء‪ ،‬ولكن صدى الماضي لم ْ‬ ‫يزل‬ ‫يهزّ نفسي ويخنق حلقي؛ وقد تمكنت من االنفالت من قبضته الخانقة‬ ‫بمحض الصدفة الصرفة‪.‬‬

‫عند بلوغي سن المراهقة‪ ،‬بدأت أخطط للهرب‪ .‬أدركت في أعماق‬ ‫علي إيجاد مكان من نوع آخر‪ .‬مكان أفعل فيه أشياء أخرى إلى جانب‬ ‫روحي أن ّ‬ ‫إلي فيه بعين‬ ‫نظر‬ ‫ي‬ ‫مكان‬ ‫الكنيسة‪.‬‬ ‫مقاعد‬ ‫على‬ ‫والجلوس‬ ‫الثلج‬ ‫التزحلق على‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لطافة من حولي‪ .‬كانت‬ ‫يهتز‬ ‫الرضا والقبول وأحظى فيه بالتشجيع‪ .‬مكان َّ‬ ‫أدركت أنني سأختنق تماما إن لم‬ ‫هذه الرغبة بديهية للغاية‪ .‬يبدو أنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أدركت كذلك أن فرصة الهروب مرتبطة بشكل ما بالدراسة‪ .‬وحدث‬ ‫أهرب‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أنني سمعت بالصدفة أن في عاصمة بلدنا مدرسة ثانوية متخصصة في‬ ‫علمت أيضا أن ولوج هذه المدرسة الثانوية صعب‬ ‫تدريس المواد الفنية‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫جدا غير أن من ينجحون في ولوجها تُ فتح أمامهم أبواب شتّ ى‪ .‬وهكذا‬ ‫لت إليهما‪.‬‬ ‫والدي بالسماح لي بالدراسة فيها بل‬ ‫حاولت إقناع‬ ‫وتوس ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫خيب ظنهما وأن مستقبلي سيكون مشرقا لو أنهما‬ ‫أخبرتهما أنني لن ُأ ِّ‬ ‫ورف ً‬ ‫قا‪ .‬وأخيرا‬ ‫أعطياني هذه الفرصة؛ ال ألنني أستحقها وإنما رحمة منهما ْ‬ ‫وافق أبي‪ .‬وافق على مضض ولكنه وافق على أي حال‪ّ .‬أما أمي فلم ترق‬ ‫أكرس‬ ‫لها أبدا فكرة انتقالي للعيش بمفردي في مدينة غريبة وال فكرة أن ِّ‬ ‫وقتي لشيء تافه مثل الفن؛ غير أنها‪ ،‬من ناحية أخرى‪ ،‬لم تكن لتعارض قرارا‬ ‫مألت استمارات طلب ولوج المدرسة بعناية‪ ،‬وأكملت‬ ‫اتخذه والدي‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫بجد واجتهاد مثاليين‪ .‬وحدثت المعجزة‪ ،‬وتم‬ ‫دراستي في المرحلة االبتدائية ٍّ‬ ‫تركت ورائي تلك القرية‬ ‫قبولي للدراسة في تلك المدرسة الثانوية‪ .‬وهكذا‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وبدأت حياة جديدة‪.‬‬ ‫والدي‪ .‬انتقلت للعيش في هلسنكي‬ ‫النائية ونصائح‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫رت فيما بعد أن كلمات أمي التي َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قللت فيها من شأني قد وهبتني‬ ‫فك ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أ‬ ‫أن‬ ‫لي‬ ‫د‬ ‫ب‬ ‫ال‬ ‫كان‬ ‫‪.‬‬ ‫ما‬ ‫د‬ ‫ق‬ ‫المضي‬ ‫على‬ ‫زتني‬ ‫وحف‬ ‫جناحين‬ ‫أن أمي‬ ‫للعالم‬ ‫ثبت‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ُ َّ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ليست على صواب‪ ،‬وأنني أنا أيضا أستطيع أن أنجح في الحياة‪.‬‬ ‫رفاق الدراسة كانوا من خلفيات مختلفة تماما‪ .‬كثيرون منهم نشأوا‬ ‫في ُأ َس ٍر فنية‪ .‬عاشوا كل حياتهم في العاصمة‪ ،‬وترعرعوا في كنف الفن‬ ‫والثقافة محاطين بحياة اإلبداع‪ .‬كانوا قد مارسوا الرقص والغناء‪ ،‬وعرفوا‬ ‫منذ نعومة أظافرهم أن ثمة مهنا مثل مهنة التمثيل ومهنة الغناء ومهنة‬ ‫زاو َلها‪ ،‬وأن‬ ‫التأليف أو اإلخراج المسرحي؛ وأن تلك المهن موجودة لكي ُن ِ‬ ‫أشخاصا مثلهم يمكنهم مزاولتها‪ .‬بل إن أهلهم شجعوهم على ممارسة‬ ‫تلك المهن‪ .‬كثيرون منهم كانوا يعزفون بسالسة على إحدى اآلالت‬ ‫الموسيقية‪ ،‬ويستطيعون تحدث لغات أجنبية بكل سهولة‪ .‬تملكتني‬ ‫رت أمام المدرسة ُأراقب ما حولي بعيون شاخصة‪ .‬ومع‬ ‫الدهشة‬ ‫وتسم ُ‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ذلك فإنني‪ ،‬لسبب ما‪ ،‬لم أشعر بخيبة األمل‪ ،‬بل ّ‬ ‫رت أن كل هذا هو‬ ‫فك ُ‬ ‫طازجا‬ ‫عصيرا‬ ‫لي اآلن‪ ،‬وبدأت َأنْ َه ُل من الحياة بشهية كبيرة كما لو كانت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫شت له منذ زمن طويل‪ .‬أعتقد أن كل هذا كان ممكنا فقط ألنني‬ ‫تعط ُ‬ ‫كنت صغيرة وعمياء نوعا ما‪ .‬لم أدرك اختالف نقطة انطالقي عن نقطة‬ ‫انطالق الباقين إال في وقت الحق‪ ،‬واستغربت حين أدركت ذلك كيف‬ ‫أنه ْر تحت َو ْق ِع تلك الظروف‪.‬‬ ‫أنني لم َ‬ ‫جمة في الدراسة ألن مستواي كان‬ ‫أتذكر جيدا أنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫واجهت صعوبات ّ‬ ‫ْيب ُعد بسنوات ضوئية عن مستوى اآلخرين‪ .‬لم أكن أتكلم االنجليزية‪،‬‬ ‫زرت المسرح من قبل‪ ،‬لم أكن‬ ‫ناهيك عن اللغات األخرى‪ ،‬لم أكن قد ُ‬ ‫أعرف شيئا عن األوبرا‪ ،‬لم أكن ُأحسن الغناء‪ ،‬لم أكن أعرف استعمال‬ ‫الكاميرات االحترافية‪ ،‬ولم أكن أعزف على أية آلة موسيقية‪ .‬وحتّ ى‬

‫ترعرعت في إحدى قرى شرق فنلندا الصغيرة‪ .‬وكانت األنشطة الترفيهية‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫المتاحة في تلك البيئة تقتصر على هوكي الجليد والتزحلق على الثلج‬ ‫والذهاب إلى الكنيسة‪ .‬أولئك الذين أرادوا البقاء في القرية بعد بلوغهم‬ ‫سن الرشد كرسوا حياتهم للتكاثر‪ ،‬والعمل في متجر أو في مرآب سيارات‪.‬‬ ‫علي مغادرة‬ ‫أما أنا‪ ،‬فكان واضحا تماما بالنسبة لي‪ ،‬ومنذ سن مبكرة‪ ،‬أن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المكان بطريقة ما‪.‬‬ ‫والدي كان يعمل في مجال البناء فيما كانت والدتي تعمل كخبيرة‬ ‫تغذية في بلدة قريبة‪ .‬كنت أدرس في المدرسة خالل النهار‪ ،‬وأتزحلق على‬ ‫بالء حسنا في مسابقات‬ ‫الثلج في الغابات في المساء‪ .‬وعادة ما كنت أبلي ً‬ ‫التزحلق على الثلج التي كانت تُ نظم كل أسبوعين‪ .‬كان بداخلي غضب‬ ‫مكبوت يدفعني للمضي قدما بقوة في مسارات التزحلق على الثلج‪.‬‬ ‫كان االنضباط والشدة في التعامل محل تقدير كبير في بيتنا‪ .‬ولم‬ ‫يكن من شيم أفراد أسرتي التعبير عن المشاعر اإليجابية‪ .‬لم نكن نعبر عن‬ ‫المودة‪ ،‬ولم نكن نعانق بعضنا أو نشجع بعضنا أو نمدح بعضنا‪ .‬كان‬ ‫إال أنهما ببساطة لم يكونا يحسنان‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫والدي يبذالن كل ما في وسعهما ّ‬ ‫التعبير عن المشاعر‪ .‬ذلك أن اإلفراط في تدليل الطفل‪ ،‬حسب منظومتهما‬ ‫القيمية‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫يعلم الطفل العجرفة‪ .‬فليس ثمة ما هو أقبح من فتاة متعجرفة‬ ‫ذات ثقة مفرطة في نفسها‪.‬‬ ‫اعتادت أمي تسليط الضوء على قلة مواهبي؛ والتأكيد على أنني ال‬ ‫أتمكن من ّ‬ ‫فضال على أنني لست‬ ‫تعلم اللغات‪ ،‬وال أملك أذنا موسيقية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جميلة وال عاقلة‪ ،‬وال موهوبة في الرياضيات‪ .‬الشيء الوحيد الذي أذكر أن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫علي وتقول إنني أحسن‬ ‫أمي مدحتني بشأنه‬ ‫يوما هو التنظيف‪ .‬كانت تطري ّ‬ ‫ترتيب األشياء أو أحسن تنظيف أرضية الحمام؛ وبهذه الطريقة كانت تجعلني‬ ‫أنهمك في أشغال البيت أكثر ألنني كنت متعطشة لسماع المزيد من المدح‪.‬‬ ‫ما من شك أن طفولتي لم تخل أيضا من بضع لحظات إطراء قصيرة‬ ‫عابرة من أحد الغرباء‪ .‬أتذكر مرة كنت فيها في مركز الرعاية النهارية التابع‬ ‫فشرعت أقرع ظهر الكرسي بقطعة عزف خشبية‪َّ .‬‬ ‫علق أحد‬ ‫للكنيسة‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫إن لي أذنا موسيقية‪ .‬لم أفهم‬ ‫وقال‬ ‫بي‪،‬‬ ‫يمر‬ ‫وهو‬ ‫قي‪،‬‬ ‫طر‬ ‫على‬ ‫األساتذة‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫إطراء فاحتضنتها وخبأتها‬ ‫معنى ذلك حينها ولكنني اعتبرت كلماته تلك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫في قلبي وتركتها هناك تعمل عملها‪.‬‬ ‫نشأت فيه أن أحدنا‬ ‫لم يكن ليخطر على بال أحد من أفراد البيت الذي‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫قد يصبح فنانا‪ .‬فجلباب الفنان كان حصرا على فئة معينة من الناس‪ .‬إنه‬ ‫مقصور على رجال عظماء ماتوا منذ زمن طويل‪ .‬رجال تمكنوا من إنتاج‬ ‫أعمال فنية ألن الله وهبهم نعمة من لدنه‪ ،‬وألنهم كانوا ببساطة موهوبين‬ ‫مثال على‬ ‫جدا لدرجة أنه لم يكن أمامهم أي خيار آخر غير إنتاج الروائع‪ .‬خذ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ذلك “موزارت” الذي شرع بتأليف السمفونيات بعد تعلمه المشي مباشرة‪.‬‬ ‫وأال أزعج‬ ‫َّأكدوا لي أن أهم شيء هو أن أتعلم السكوت والطاعة‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫علي كذلك تمشيط شعري ومساعدة أمي‬ ‫اآلخرين‪ .‬من البديهي طبعا أن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫في ترتيب البيت‪ :‬ينبغي تعليق المعاطف في مكانها ووضع القبعات‬ ‫عتب ُر مفيدة للفتيات‪،‬‬ ‫على الرف المخصص لها‪ .‬هذه المهارات كانت تُ َ‬ ‫فقد َّأكدوا لي أنني لو كنت جد متواضعة وجد مهذبة فإنني قد أجد رجال‬ ‫يقبل بي ويتزوجني‪ ،‬وبذلك تكون مهمة حياتي قد أنجزت‪.‬‬

‫وإذا كان عملهم ترجماتهم‪ ،‬فإن اللقطات من إقامتهم هي مالحظة‬ ‫المترجم أو الكلمة األخيرة أو اليوميات‪ .‬كيف ظهر هذا العمل؟ ما كان‬ ‫السياق البيئي؟ من كان هناك ومن تعاون ومن دعم من؟ ما كانت‬ ‫شروط اإلنتاج ويمكن القول إنه كان من الممكن صنعها في أي مكان‪،‬‬ ‫لكن األعمال تبدو كأنها عالمة وسجل وقت التواجد‪ ،‬ووقت التركيز‪ .‬كيف‬ ‫تمت هذه الترجمات؟ من خالل لغة الصور والنوايا المشتركة واإليماءات‬ ‫الجسدية والتعاون ومشاركة صحن طعام والمشي لمسافات طويلة‬ ‫ومساعدة بعضهم البعض‪.‬‬ ‫معا إلنتاج‬ ‫إن الوجود المطلق لهؤالء األفراد الخمسة الذين يعملون ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يمكن المشاهد بسبب الطبيعة‬ ‫عمل مترابط ومتعاون بشكل متكرر‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اهتزازا من هذه الصور‪ .‬ال تبدو اللقطات‬ ‫الملموسة لوجودهم‪ ،‬فيطلع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫صورا ثابتة وال متصنعة‪ ،‬بل يبدو أن الصور تم التقاطها‬ ‫من اإلقامة‬ ‫جميعا‬ ‫يرقصون‬ ‫كانوا‬ ‫لو‬ ‫كما‬ ‫والحركات‪،‬‬ ‫األحداث‬ ‫بين‬ ‫أو‬ ‫قبل‬ ‫بالنانو ثانية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لساعات طويلة وتوقفوا مؤقتً ا للحظة فقط‪ .‬حتى تبدو للمشاهد أن هذه‬ ‫الصور راسخة‪ ،‬وأنها ستستمر عبر الزمن و إلى األبد‪ .‬إنهم يشبهون نجوم‬ ‫موسيقى الروك أو فرقة موسيقية في جولة لقد قفزوا لتوهم من‬ ‫الشاحنة في وسط منظر طبيعي بين حفالتهم‪.‬‬ ‫هم فرقة موشيقى البانك ويقومون بأداء أغنية في وسط البحر‪.‬‬ ‫مع من يتجاوب هذا العمل؟‬ ‫ال يتعلق األمر فقط بالنوع االجتماعي‪ ،‬لكنها ّأثرت هذه الصور‬ ‫لوجود المرأة الجسدي وغيابه علي بعمق في تصريحاتهم حول تجارب‬ ‫وغالبا ما تكون داخل حدوح المجتمع األبوي‪.‬‬ ‫النساء‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫غالبا ما “يقرؤون” هذه التجربة ضمن هذه‬ ‫إن الحقيقة التي يبدو أنهم ً‬ ‫السيناريوهات المفتوحة للغاية‪ ،‬تدل على أنه ليس مجرد موضوع‪ ،‬بل هو‬ ‫تعبير عن االنتشار الواسع والرسوخ لهذا النوع من التوتر والنضال‪ .‬حتى‬ ‫ديهي إلى درجة العبثية‪ ،‬مثل البرتقال‪،‬‬ ‫أبسط األشياء على الرغم من أنه َب‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من الممكن أن يصبح أداة للسيرة الذاتية وطريقة لنقل عالم مرئي بالكامل‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‪.‬‬ ‫فيمكن التعجب من البرتقال ويمكن تجزئته ويمكن عصره‬

‫حمالت الملصقات الفنية في تاريخ الفن المعاصر وهي فتيات حرب‬ ‫العصابات “هل يتعين على النساء أن يصبحن عاريات للوصول إلى متحف‬ ‫متروبوليتان للفنون؟” – وتترجمها إلى سياقها الثقافي الخاص من أجل‬ ‫طرح السؤال “هل ما زلنا بحاجة لتندرج في صندوق األوهام الخاص بك؟‬ ‫– إرهابي مقموع ‪ /‬جسم جنسي مقموع – وتستولى على عمل الفن‬ ‫األصلي في نفس الوقت‪.‬‬ ‫تقوم روان المحروقي بربط السيناريوهات من خالل تركيزها على‬ ‫وتسخر المرح المتأصل في السيناريوهات إلعطاء قوة‬ ‫العنف المنزلي‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لرسالتها‪ .‬تصبح نافذة متجر مليئة باألباجورة حشود من عيون الرجال‬ ‫تراقبك أنت كالمشاهد‪ .‬المرأة دائمة في ظل الرجل‪ .‬والصورة األكثر إثارة‬ ‫للدهشة هي األم التي تبتسم مع صبي وصبيان آخران يبتسمان وهي‬ ‫صورة ترحيبية تحمل عنوان‪“ :‬قتل الطفالت‪ .‬االختفاء‪ ”.‬وعندما ُيطلب‬ ‫منها التفكير في اختفاء فهي ال تفكر في نفسها أو في شيء مثل في‬ ‫الخدعة السحرية‪ ،‬إنها تفكر في الفتيات‪.‬‬ ‫وعلى نحو ُمماثِ ل‪ ،‬فإن سلسلة من صور رقية مزار ً‬ ‫ردا على‬ ‫السيناريوهات تتحدث بوضوح شديد عن قوة شعور تثيرها الكلمات مثل‬ ‫“الحرية” و“العروس” و“الرأس” و“التنكر” و“الجدول الزمني” و“االختفاء”‬ ‫كشابة عمانية مع توقعات من حياتها وطريقة معينة يستخدمها المجتمع‬ ‫لتقديرها‪ .‬إنها مدفونة تحت األنقاض‪ ،‬وهي عروس قلقة بشكل واضح‪،‬‬ ‫ورحم ينتظر أن يتم استخدامه‪ ،‬وتُ قلل إلى مالبسها السوداء التي ترفرف‬ ‫في مهب الريح‪.‬‬ ‫تذهلك استجابات الفنانين للسيناريوهات ألنها تجعلك تعيد النظرة‬ ‫إليها والتفكير فيها مرة أخرى‪ .‬تتصادم مع توقعاتك في لحظة استيعاب‬ ‫غالبا على مستويين أو تتأرجح بين الحاالت‪ .‬إنها‬ ‫الصورة ألنها تعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقول‪ :‬أنا كمترجم وكاإلنسان الذي يتوسط في هذه القطعة الصغيرة‬ ‫ويمررها‪ ،‬لدي استجابة شخصية‪ ،‬أي سياسية لما أقراء‪ .‬أنا لست مجرد‬ ‫ِوعاء لتمرير التواصل عبره‪ ،‬بل أشعر بهذه الرسالة بطريقة معينة بسبب‬ ‫من أنا‪ .‬وهذه هي الطريقة التي يجب أن أقوم بها لروايتي القصص‪ ،‬لكي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‪.‬‬ ‫يتجاوب معي ومعك أنت‬ ‫يسري مفهوم ْ‬ ‫االن ِعكاس عبر هذه األعمال الفردية والتعاونية للفنانين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتتنكر في مالبس اآلخر‪ ،‬حتى‬ ‫الخمسة – وتعكس اللغة الجسد لآلخر‪،‬‬ ‫تصل إلى درجة التوأمة بطريقة ما بغض النظر عن مدى عدم تناغمها‪،‬‬ ‫لتصبح ترجمة لآلخر‪ .‬أو بنفس القدر تصبح ترجمة عن النفس من وإلى‬ ‫األنفس الخاصة والعامة ‪ -‬هل نريد أن ُنترجم بالعين؟ في هذه اللحظات‬ ‫من ارتداء األزياء أو ارتداء المالبس المطابقة أو ارتداء الحجاب أو ارتداء ألوان‬ ‫متطابقة أو مكملة أو ارتداء قناع أو حجاب حقيقي أو رقمي أو ارتداء وال‬ ‫شيء على اإلطالق ‪ ،‬نالحظ كيف يمكن للمالبس أو عدم وجودها أن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تأثيرا في جعل‬ ‫أيضا يمكن أن تخلق‬ ‫تضامنا واإلخاء واالنتماء ولكن ً‬ ‫تخلق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جسم أو ال إنساني أو منفور من‬ ‫الفرد غير واضحا وغير مدركا أو حتى ُم ّ‬ ‫دائما نترجم أنفسنا في نفس الوقت يجب علينا‬ ‫النفس‪ .‬عندما نترجم‪ ،‬نحن ً‬ ‫كسر أنفسنا وإعادة بنائنا مرة أخرى في سياق جديد ‪ -‬تصبح السيناريوهات‬ ‫خريطة تحدد طريقك‪ ،‬بينما تظل أنت الوحيد الذي يعرف ما هي وجهتك‪.‬‬

‫سألت‪“ :‬ماذا سنفعل؟”‬ ‫قليال”‪.‬‬ ‫وأجاب توماس‪“ :‬لنرى ما يحدث ونكتشف هذا المكان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫“يعني‪ ...‬هذا ليس بالضبط ما هو المتوقع منا”‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وأرغبت في أن أكون‬ ‫فارغا‬ ‫كانت تقلقني اإلمكانية أنه يكون ذهني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫استعدادا‪ ،‬وأن تكون رؤيتي واضحة وليست مجرد مجموعة من‬ ‫أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقريبا‬ ‫أسبوعين‬ ‫لمدة‬ ‫نسافر‬ ‫كنا‬ ‫ألننا‬ ‫مرهقين‬ ‫كنا‬ ‫الغامضة‪.‬‬ ‫االحتماالت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫من مطار إلى التالي‪ ،‬ومن فندق إلى التالي‪ ،‬ومن متحف إلى التالي‪ ،‬ومن‬ ‫اجتماع إلىالتالي‪ ،‬ومن القيام بخطاب ترويجي إلى التالي وإلى أخره‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫“إذا‪ ,‬لنرى مجرد ماذا يحدث بما أنّ نا قد فعلنا ما كان من المفترض‬ ‫أن نفعله‪ ،‬فقد يكون هذا شيئا جديدا‪ .‬أليست فكرة هذا البرنامج تمكين‬ ‫التعاون بين المؤسسات الفنية من المملكة المتحدة والخليج؟”‬ ‫استرخاء عن كل شيء‪’ :‬لنرى‪ ...‬لنرى فقط’‪.‬‬ ‫وكالعادة‪ ,‬كان توماس أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فكرت أنه ربما كان يجب علينا إلغاء هذه المرحلة األخيرة من الرحلة ونرجع‬ ‫إلى المنزل لكنني أردت المجيء إلى ُعمان فلم أزرها من قبل‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أخيرا برز مشروع جديد وكان أكثر إلهاما وتحفيزا مما كنا نستطيع أن‬ ‫و‬ ‫نحلم به من مكاتبنا في لندن‪.‬‬ ‫من أجل بروز هذا المشروع‪ ،‬تُ ّ‬ ‫طلب األمر بضع رحالت إضافية وساعات‬ ‫من المحادثة ومئات من رسائل واتس آب وحفنة حاالت سوء الفهم وأربعة‬ ‫فنانين عمانيين وواحد فنلندي ومنظمتين للفنون ومنزل واحد في الجبال‪.‬‬ ‫عملنا عدة مرات منذ عام ‪ 2000‬مع إيلينا براذاروس‪ ،‬التي اضطلعت‬ ‫بمسؤولية المرشدة والنظيرة لروان المحروقي وصفاء البلوشي ورقية‬ ‫مزار وريهام نور الزدجالي‪ .‬انطلقت براذاروس إلى جبل األخضر في جبال‬ ‫الحجر في سيارة الدفع الرباعي مع الفنانين العمانيين األربعة الذين لم‬ ‫معا لمدة أسبوعين‪،‬‬ ‫تقابلهم من قبل‪ .‬كان عليهم أن يعيشوا ويعملوا ً‬ ‫وشمل هذا القيام بالسياقة والتسوق والطبخ وتناول الطعام وغسيل‬ ‫األواني والمشي والتفكير وتصوير األفالم وتصوير الصورة والرسم‬ ‫والكتابة والمشاركة والمناقشة والنوم‪.‬‬

‫الرنين ‪2‬‬

‫كانت جبال الحجر تتوهج بضوء برتقالي غامق عند عبورنا األول ونحن‬ ‫نطير من البحرين إلى عمان فوق أعلى سلسلة جبال في شبه الجزيرة‬ ‫العربية الشرقية‪ .‬وكانت الشمس تحت األفق بينما كنا نلمح الوديان‬ ‫العميقة والضيقة التي كانت تختفي ببطء في الظالم الداكن من خالل‬ ‫النافذة البيضاوية للطائرة العمانية لطيران امبراير اي ام بي ‪ .175‬لم‬ ‫يشبه ذلك المنظر الصخري والجاف والقاحل أي شيء رأيناه من قبل‬ ‫وعلى الرغم من أننا لم ندركه في تلك اللحظة‪ ،‬فقد كنا فوق قمة جبل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شهرا‪ ،‬كنا سنستأجر سيارة‬ ‫أيضا أنه بعد ثمانية عشر‬ ‫شمس‪ .‬ولم نعرف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دفع رباعي للتجول في منتصف هذه الجبال وتصوير جبل شمس في‬ ‫وقت الفجر وهو يخرج من الغسق ويعكس أشعة الشمس الشرق‬ ‫أوسطية الشديدة باتجاه عدسات الكاميرا‪.‬‬

‫أعمال المجلس الثقافي البريطاني تتمحور حول فكرة الصدى على الدوام‬ ‫الفنون هي أكثر الطرق قوة في التقريب بين الناس‪ ،‬فهي تعزز‬ ‫مبدأ التفاهم المتبادل وتساعدنا على ادراك وتقدير ما هو مشترك فيما‬ ‫بيننا – الفنون هي وسيلة لمساعدتنا على معرفة الثقافات كما تساهم‬ ‫في انتشار صداها‪.‬‬ ‫مزدهرا للفنون من خالل الفنانين‬ ‫مشهدا‬ ‫تمتلك سلطنة ُعمان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المتمكنين باإلضافة إلى الفنانين الواعدين‪ .‬ومن خالل عملنا في الفنون‬ ‫والثقافة فإننا نأمل أن نشجع أكبر عدد ممكن من األشخاص على‬ ‫المشاركة واالستمتاع بتجربة األعمال الفنية للفنانين العمانيين‬ ‫والدوليين‪ ،‬عالوة على تبادل المعرفة والتجارب واألفكار‪.‬‬ ‫نحن فخورون بدعم برنامج إقامة فنان “صدى” والذي يشارك فيه‬ ‫أربعة من الفنانات العمانيات الموهوبات وهن و روان المحروقي‪ ،‬و صفا‬ ‫أعمال جديدة‬ ‫البلوشي‪ ،‬رقية مزار‪،‬و ريهام نور الزدجالي والالتي ستقدمن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بإشراف وتشجيع من الفنانة الفنلندية القديرة الينا بروثيروس‪.‬‬ ‫جزيل الشكر موصول إلى شركائنا “ذا وابنج بروجكتس” و “صالة‬ ‫ستال”‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى الداعمين لنا ‪ DCMS‬و ‪ GREAT‬من خالل برنامج‬ ‫معرض المملكة المتحدة والخليج‪.‬‬ ‫ونأمل أن تستمتعوا بهذا المنشور الذي يقدم لكم كتابات جديدة‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى األعمال الفنية للفنانات الخمسة والتي تتمحور حول‬ ‫مفهوم “الصدى”‪.‬‬
