WELCOME TO OUR DISTRICT

Whether you are a first time visitor, returning regular, travelling locally for a staycation or from overseas, I’d like to thank you for choosing to visit Wānaka and the surrounding Upper Clutha district.

From slow tourism, reconnecting with nature, to actively adventuring, enjoying a major festival or event I’m sure you’ll leave wishing you could have stayed longer and will be working on a return visit.

You’ll find a great selection of locally owned and operated businesses - many run by people who, like myself, first came as visitors and ended up putting down roots and who love sharing their stories and passion for the area.

And even though we may have lived here for 20 plus years, we still find ourselves stopping and photographing views, sunsets, colours and cloud formations that remind us why we chose to stay here.

One of the things that I know our visitors love is that there is so much on offer to experience that it really doesn’t matter what time of year you visit and each season has its own draw cards.

If you are visiting from overseas you’ll really notice just how impactful our surrounding landscapes are on how it feels to be here, how uncrowded it feels, the lack of queues at our ski fields, the amazing network of hiking and biking trails, backcountry huts and the freshness of our air and water that we are privileged to take for granted.

Make sure you hunt down the artisan food producers, local wineries and coffee bean roasters. Catch a salmon and have it turned into fresh sashimi before your eyes or savour the taste of free range organic venison, our world famous lamb followed by a selection of very local cheeses.

Wānaka and the Upper Clutha has a very engaged community who are passionate about protecting the environment, supporting culture and our economy as the residential population grows year on year, so do make sure you allow time for all the conversations you’ll have with the many people you’ll meet as you travel.

Authentic, local and vibrant are the points of difference that you’ll remember long after you’ve returned home.

Enjoy your visit!

A MĀORI

HISTORY

A whakatauki of the tribe is:

Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei

For us and our children after us.

Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), first arrived in waka unua (double hulled voyaging canoes) from Hawaiki more than 600 years ago. Māori connections with the land, mountains and water of New Zealand are steeped in history going right back to the traditional accounts of creation.

Wānaka is one of the lakes referred to in our tradition of 'Nga Puna Wai Karikari o Rakaihautu' which tells how the principal lakes of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island) were dug by the ancient explorer Rakaihautu. The name 'Wānaka' is considered by some to be a South Island variant of the word 'wananga' which refers to the ancient schools of learning. In these schools young men would be taught whakapapa (genealogies) which stretched back over a hundred generations and karakia (incantations) for innumerable situations.

Wānaka was traditionally noted as a rich tuna (eel) fishery, with many thousands of the fish once being caught, preserved and transported back to the kainga nohoanga (settlements) of coastal Otago.

The tupuna (ancestors) had considerable knowledge of whakapapa (family), traditional trails and tauranga waka (landing places), places for gathering kai (food) and other taonga, ways in which to use the resources of Wānaka, the relationship of people with the lake and their dependence on it and tikanga for the proper and sustainable utilisation of resources. All of these values remain important to Ngai Tahu today.

The Mauri of Wānaka represents the essence that binds the physical and spiritual elements of all things together, generating and upholding all life. All elements of the natural environment possess a life force, and all forms of life are related. Mauri is a critical element of the spiritual relationship of Ngai Tahu Whanui with the lake.

10,000 YEARS AGO

Lake Wānaka and neighbouring Lake Hāwea were formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age.

ON THE MAP

Captain James Cook landed and mapped New Zealand.

EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

European settlement began in the Upper Clutha River Valley with the establishment of sheep stations by runholders. The first station was at Albert Town, the only place where settlers could ford the Clutha River.

THE START OF TOURISM

The first hotel in the region was opened by Theodore Russell, at the site of the present day Wānaka Hotel.

SNOW TOWN

The opening of ski fields in the area from the 1970's helped to cement Wānaka's status as a year-round resort town.

MĀORI SETTLEMENT

Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), first arrived in the region more than 600 years ago.

A VISITOR

Māori chieftans by the name of Reko and Kaikoura guided the region's first European visitor, Nathaniel Chalmers.

THE FIRST GOLD RUSH

At the height of the first gold rush, Cardrona was the region's largest town, with 400 people calling it home.

A NEW NAME

The town of Pembroke was officially renamed Wānaka.

WĀNAKA TODAY

One of New Zealand's most beautiful towns in one of New Zealand's fastest growing regions. Wānaka has grown a reputation as a great place to visit and an even better place to live!

RAISE YOUR EYES TO THE SKIES

If you set your sights higher than the snow-dusted peaks and rugged ridgelines, Wānaka’s skies reveal a whole new dimension of adventure. With endless blue overhead and a dramatic alpine backdrop below, the air above Wānaka is more than just a view - it’s a playground for thrill seekers, explorers, and anyone chasing unforgettable moments.

Whether you're in the mood for a serene sightseeing experience or the rush of pure adrenaline, there’s an in-air activity waiting to elevate your trip. Take to the skies and discover the unique perspectives that only Wānaka can offer.

Start your aerial journey with a scenic flight aboard a fixed-wing plane, where you can soar above glacial lakes, braided rivers, and towering peaks (See Southern Alps Air on page 41). For an even closer look at the dramatic terrain, hop in a helicopter and land on a remote glacier, where the silence of the mountains surrounds you and the views stretch as far as the eye can see (See Wanaka Helicopters on page 19). Backcountry Helicopters (page 35) offers unforgettable adventures into Mount Aspiring National Park and beyond, giving you access to some of the South Island’s most untouched beauty.

Craving something a little more heart-pounding? Strap in for a tandem skydive and feel your heart race as you free-fall with panoramic views of Lake Wānaka, the Clutha River, and the mountains beyond. Or gently glide like a bird over waterfalls and ridgelines with a tandem paraglide - peaceful, powerful, and perfect for those who want to experience flight in its purest form. Want a mix of sky and lake? Try parasailing for a high-flying yet relaxing ride above the water, offering epic views and photo opportunities galore.

Wānaka’s love affair with the skies doesn’t stop there. Every two years, the town becomes the epicentre of aerial excitement during the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s premier aviation events. The next show will be held from 3 - 5 April 2026, transforming Wānaka Airport into a buzzing hub of vintage aircraft, military displays, and awe-inspiring aerial stunts. With three full days of high-octane fun, it’s an event that appeals to aviation enthusiasts, families, and photographers alike - a perfect reason to plan your next Wānaka getaway.

Prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground? You can still enjoy the magic of Wānaka’s skies. Join a guided night walk through the wilderness to experience the southern night in all its glory. Or take a stargazing tour and learn about the southern constellations, planets, and galaxies - Wānaka’s clear skies make it a prime destination for celestial discovery.

From the calm to the crazy, from sunrise to starlight, Wānaka invites you to rise above the ordinary. Whether you're flying, floating, or simply gazing upward, the skies here promise unforgettable memories.

Reach for the sky with your Wānaka experience.

A DESTINATION FOR ALL SEASONS

A SEASON OF COLOUR, CALM AND COSY CHARM

While every season has its charm, there’s something truly magical about autumn in Wānaka. As the days grow cooler and the landscape transforms, the town takes on a golden glow that’s hard to resist. With the poplar trees lining the lakefront ablaze in shades of amber, copper, and crimson, autumn is a dream season for photographers, artists, and anyone who appreciates nature at its most spectacular. This time of year is ideal for slower-paced adventures - scenic walks, crisp morning bike rides, or simply soaking in the colours with a coffee in hand. The cooler temperatures make outdoor activities more comfortable, and the softer light brings a special kind of clarity to the region’s already stunning views.

For those hoping to capture the perfect shot, the reflections on the lake and the dramatic backdrops of Mount Aspiring National Park provide plenty of Instagram-worthy moments. Early morning and late afternoon are especially rewarding for photographers chasing golden hour magic.

If the weather turns wet - as it occasionally does in autumn - Wānaka still delivers. For a town of its size, Wānaka punches well above its weight in indoor experiences. Tucked away in the heart of town is Cinema Paradiso, an iconic movie spot lovingly described by Lonely Planet as a "national treasure." Think mismatched couches, an old-school charm, and still-warm homemade cookies served at intermission. For something to keep active, why not visit the

5 DAY walks

01. Rob Roy Glacier Track

3–4HRS RETURN (10KMS)

One of New Zealand’s best half day walks. A 1 hour drive from Wānaka, the walk starts from the Raspberry Creek carpark. After a 15 minute walk through the valley you cross the West Matukituki River by swing bridge into beech forest. The track then climbs steadily through a small gorge along the Rob Roy Stream, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with spectacular views of the Rob Roy Glacier.

*In winter months please check track conditions with the Department of Conservation as the track can be subject to snow and ice.

02. Roy's Peak Track

5-6HRS RETURN (16KMS)

At the summit of this popular day walk is an allencompassing panorama that includes most of Lake Wānaka, the surrounding peaks and Mount Aspiring/ Tititea. Before setting out, be mindful that this exposed track has no shelter from the sun or rain. Temperatures can drop quickly, even in midsummer – take warm and wind-proof clothing. From here it’s a steep, winding, rocky climb to a skyline ridge, with sections where bikers will need to dismount and push. A sign on the ridge points right to the track to 1,385m Isthmus Peak, and left along the exposed ridge to the Matatiaho Conservation Area. Craig Burn access: A short walk from the car park leads to a pleasant picnic spot on the lower Craig Burn. There is no formed track above this point on the conservation area; access is via scrubby, steep and rocky terrain.

Cardrona. Home to 600+ha of laps. Nine flavour-packed eateries. A world-class snow sports school.

Maude is a family owned and operated wine company with its roots firmly entrenched in Central Otago. Our first grapes were planted in the Maungawera Valley just ten minutes from the Wanaka township back in 1994, when it was still just a sleepy little holiday destination.

Our beautiful Maude Tasting Room sits just above the Wanaka Golf Course with breathtaking views over the lake and mountains. We implore you to come try some award winning locally handcrafted wines at our tasting bench. We offer a daily selection of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Bubbles.

If your day allows a more leisurely visit, enjoy a glass or bottle alongside some delicious small bites on our scenic terrace. Our gregarious staff will take you through the story of Maude Wines, sharing with you their intimate knowledge of the wines and what makes them so unique. Our hours are Thursday to Monday, from 12 to 5pm. Please note our hours and days do change seasonally so please check online. Bookings are definitely essential - we are still big on atmosphere, but small on space.

TARRAS VILLAGE

COFFEE WITHOUT THE WASTE

Wānaka is aiming to become Aotearoa’s first single-use cup-free town. Thanks to SUCfree Wānaka, many cafés now offer cup-lending libraries, and 10 are completely single-use cup free. Together, they’re saving around 180,000 cups from landfill every year!

Here’s how to enjoy your holiday coffee:

• Sit in and savour your brew

• Bring your own cup (grab one from Wastebusters if needed)

• Borrow a cup from a café’s lending scheme

Heading out for a hike or lakeside picnic? A reusable container is your best friend. Fill it with café treats, stash snacks, or save leftovers. Pair it with a refillable water bottle to save money, avoid waste, and help keep our lakes and tracks pristine.

SHOP SECOND-HAND FIRST

Forgot something or need an extra layer? Visit Wastebusters, just five

WELCOME TO WĀNAKA - A PLACE OF BREATHTAKING MOUNTAINS, CRYSTALCLEAR LAKES, AND A COMMUNITY THAT CARES DEEPLY FOR THE LAND. WHETHER YOU’RE HERE FOR A FEW DAYS OR A FEW WEEKS, WE INVITE YOU TO TRAVEL LIKE A LOCAL: TREAD LIGHTLY, CREATE LESS WASTE, AND CONNECT WITH THIS SPECIAL PLACE THROUGH MINDFUL HABITS.

For over 25 years, Wastebusters has helped our community rethink waste - keeping treasures in use and inspiring people to make more informed choices. That same spirit runs through Wānaka’s environmental initiatives, from Plastic Free Wānaka and the SUCfree campaign to the mahi of Love Wānaka. Together, we’re asking visitors to help protect what makes this place so special - for locals and for all who come to explore our town among the mountains and lakes.

minutes from town. Buying secondhand saves money, reduces waste, and offers unique souvenirs.

REAL RECYCLING MADE SIMPLE

Out and about? Recycle glass bottles and aluminium cans in the blue and black bins. These materials can be turned into new products when kept clean. Dirty takeaway containers go in the red rubbish bins.

• Most accommodation offers recycling. In our district, plastics 1, 2, and 5, along with glass, cans, paper and cardboard, can be recycled. If unsure, check with your host.

• Tetra Paks can be taken to Wastebusters.

• Used batteries? Drop them at Mitre 10 or the transfer station - never in the bin, as they can cause fires.

PACKAGE-FREE SHOPPING

Wānaka has plenty of ways to cut down on packaging. Support local producers and reduce plastic waste by choosing:

• Locally roasted coffee in paper bags

• Fresh bread, free-range eggs, seasonal fruit and veg

Plastic Free Wānaka has a great online guide to local waste-free shopping options.

COMPOST, REFILL, REPEAT

Ask your accommodation provider if they compost food scraps - many do.

GIVE BACK

WHILE YOU’RE HERE

Caring for Wānaka goes beyond waste. Love Wānaka supports projects that protect our environment. Donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word to make a difference.

BE PART OF OUR STORY

Our community is building a culture where reducing waste is second nature. As a visitor, you’re invited to be part of that story. By choosing to reuse, skipping single-use, shopping secondhand, travelling slowly, and giving back, you’ll help keep Wānaka special –for locals and future travellers alike.

WĀNAKA’S ADVENTURE EXPERTS SINCE

LET’S GO PLAY

Award-winning and emerging NZ artists with a focus on Canterbury, Otago & Southland artists.

Welcome to beautiful, waste-conscious Wanaka!

Welcome to Wānaka!

In what may be a world-first, Wanaka is well on the way to being single use cup-free (SUCfree).

Mountains, lakes and dreamy sunsets… Wānaka is our little paradise and we can’t wait to share it with you.

SIT, BYO or BORROW!

Cafes and caravans all over town have cup lending schemes or are running cup libraries and many are already completely SUCfree.

Join us on a mission to become Aotearoa’s first single-use cup free (SUCfree) town and say “yes” to reusable coffee cups, bottles and bags.

Hundreds of thousands of throwaway cups are being saved from landfill or contaminating our recycling streams every year.

While you’re here, follow the locals and sit, bring your own or borrow.

We’d love you to get on board with this community initiative.

So while you’re here, remember to:

Sit, BYO or borrow a cup.

Thank you!

Amy Bixby Jewellery is a stunning gallery workshop, located at the base of Mt. Iron in Albert Town, easily accessible for walkers and bikers who are encouraged to pop in. Drop by for that unique, ‘one of a kind’ gift to remind you of Wanaka. Visitors not only get to browse and try on her entirely handmade collection, they are also able to see where she crafts her beautiful jewellery.

Amy’s aesthetic and appreciation for the handmade was shaped through her rural upbringing in Central Otago. The DIY mentality was instilled from a young age and the farm provided plenty of opportunities to create and explore. At Dunedin School of Art, her love of tools paired with her artistic creativity flourished in the metalsmith programme and a love of creating hand-forged jewellery was born.

Amy believes there is incredible value in crafting an object entirely by hand, knowing it won’t be reproduced in an exact

likeness. It not only retains that personal connection to its maker, but will also last lifetimes.

Custom work for all occasions, including engagement and wedding rings, are her passion. Amy connects with each customer and the lasting relationships that often develop as a result, are the ultimate perks of her job. Her goal is to create pieces that truly resonate with her customers and help showcase their individuality. As each piece is entirely handforged by Amy, no two pieces are alike.

Bombay originally was made up of seven islands of lush, fertile land. The earliest inhabitants were the Kolis or fisherfolk, which named the islands as Mumbai after a patron deity Mumba Devi. The sultan of Gujarat acquired much of these lands by the 14th Century but it fell to the Portuguese in 1534. The Portuguese later gave MumbaDevi (Bombay) to England as part of a dowry upon the marriage of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II. By the middle of the 17th Century, England held control over the seven islands. Not until the 18th Century following land reclamation were the seven islands joined together again.

Bombay derives its unique character from its varied heritage and is still considered a patchwork quilt of Indian culture and faith. Modern Bombay or Mumbai, the financial and commercial nucleus of India has always been a magnet city attracting the young & elderly, scholars, engineers, artists and entrepreneurs, administrators and the actors from across the length and breadth of the vast and magnificent country of India. Everyone of them in search of fame and fortunes, with their talent, skills and tradition have lent Bombay it’s unparalleled character. With it’s Islamic-Gothic architecture surrounded by modern day Skyscrapers, with temples and mosques, synagogues and churches standing beside five star hotels & discotheques.

Here at Bombay palace, We have aspired to bring to your table a menu that reflects the cosmopolitan culture & culinary specialities of Bombay, the gateway to India.

10 SHORT walks

01. Mount Iron Walk

Arguably Wānaka’s most popular walk, Mount Iron is an impressive, glacier carved, 240m rocky knoll. From its summit a great panorama unfolds: lakes Wānaka and Hāwea, the Cardrona and Upper Clutha valleys and all the surrounding peaks.

Loop track: 1.5hrs (4.5km)

02. Diamond Lake Track

Spectacular views include Lake Wānaka and a skyline dominated by the surrounding peaks. The distinct shape of Mount Aspiring/Tititea lies to the west. Sections of this track are steep, with significant fall hazard. The track is often slippery, even in summer – take extreme care. This track is not recommended during the winter months due to ice.

Circuit track return: 45mins (2.5kms)

Lookout return: 1hr (2kms)

Lake Wānaka lookout return: 2hrs (5kms)

Rocky Mountain summit track return: 3hrs (7kms)

03. Beacon Point Walk

The track continues from Bremner Bay to Beacon Point, with great lake and mountain views along the way. It suits all ages and abilities, including baby buggies and bikes.

30mins (1.5kms)

04. Gladstone Track

From the Hāwea dam, the track follows the foreshore in front of Lake Hāwea township before travelling through open farmland to John Creek Recreation Reserve.

1.5hrs (6.5kms)

05. Glendhu bay track

Incorporating the Waterfall Creek Track, continue past the creek for one hour on terraces above Lake Wānaka, before dropping onto a small northfacing beach suitable for swimming. From here the track continues around to Glendhu Bay.

3 - 4hrs (12.5kms)

06. Deans Bank Track

Loop track: the Deans Bank Track situated on the Clutha River/Mata-Au near Albert Town is a one-way multiuse track popular with mountain bikers. A walking track leads down to Dublin Bay.

Loop track: 1.5hrs - 2hrs (11.5kms)

07. The Blue Pools

A one hour drive from Wānaka in the Makarora area is this scenic short walk. Perfect for kids and an ideal swimming spot in summer, walk through beech/ tawhero forest to a swing bridge over the Makarora River. After crossing the river, follow a boardwalk to a viewing platform over the Blue Pools. Soon after, cross the Blue Pools bridge for great views up the river gorge.

Return track: 1hr (3kms)

08. Eely Point Walk

Eely Point is a popular, sheltered boating and picnicking area. From Wānaka town follow the lakeshore to the right past the marina, and on to Eely Point. Carrying on around the point for another five minutes takes you to Bremner Bay, a good family swimming spot.

20mins (1km)

09. Outlet Track

Spectacular scenery makes this popular for both walkers and bikers. The track follows the Clutha River/ Mata-Au; start or finish at the Lake Wānaka outlet or Hikuwai Conservation Area in Albert Town. Bikers should ride carefully and give way to walkers. The Hikuwai mountain bike loop above the main river track gives a more challenging ride.

45mins (3kms)

10. Waterfall Creek Track

This track starts from the western end of Roys Bay, soon reaching Wānaka Station Park, a beautiful picnic area on the left. The track then winds along the lake’s western shores for superb views, passing Edgewater Resort and Rippon Vineyard before reaching Waterfall Creek.
