WELCOME
NAU MAI, HAERE MAI!
On behalf of Queenstown Lakes District I am delighted to welcome you to Wānaka and the Upper Clutha.

It’s full of people, places and pastimes to provide a lifetime of memories whether you’re just visiting or a long-time local.
With Mt Aspiring National Park on your doorstep the stunning landscape is yours to explore whatever your thrill level. Take a stroll on the lakefront or climb alpine peaks, enjoy a gentle round of golf or hurtle down epic mountain bike and snow trails.
The seasons’ changing colours inspire different activities and moods. Spring bursts with green energy, summer relaxing blue and yellow, autumn is a knock-out combination of reds and golds, and winter pure white.
The Upper Clutha continues to change as more people visit and choose to live in this gorgeous corner of Aotearoa New Zealand. But change only adds to its character with ever more options for socialising, dining, shopping and enjoying world-class events like the Festival of Colour, Winter Games NZ and Warbirds over Wānaka.
Whatever you’re here for, and for however long you stay, Wānaka is yours to enjoy!

whakatauki
Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), first arrived in waka unua (double hulled voyaging canoes) from Hawaiki more than 600 years ago. Māori connections with the land, mountains and water of New Zealand are steeped in history going right back to the traditional accounts of creation.
Wānaka is one of the lakes referred to in our tradition of 'Nga Puna Wai Karikari o Rakaihautu' which tells how the principal lakes of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island) were dug by the ancient explorer Rakaihautu. The name 'Wānaka' is considered by some to be a South Island variant of the word 'wananga' which refers to the ancient schools of learning. In these schools young men would be taught whakapapa (genealogies) which stretched back over a hundred generations and karakia (incantations) for innumerable situations.
Wānaka was traditionally noted as a rich tuna (eel) fishery, with many thousands of the fish once being caught,
preserved and transported back to the kainga nohoanga (settlements) of coastal Otago.
The tupuna (ancestors) had considerable knowledge of whakapapa (family), traditional trails and tauranga waka (landing places), places for gathering kai (food) and other taonga, ways in which to use the resources of Wānaka, the relationship of people with the lake and their dependence on it and tikanga for the proper and sustainable utilisation of resources. All of these values remain important to Ngai Tahu today.
The Mauri of Wānaka represents the essence that binds the physical and spiritual elements of all things together, generating and upholding all life. All elements of the natural environment possess a life force, and all forms of life are related. Mauri is a critical element of the spiritual relationship of Ngai Tahu Whanui with the lake.

Amy Bixby Jewellery is a stunning gallery workshop, located at the base of Mt. Iron in Albert Town, easily accessible for walkers and bikers who are encouraged to pop in. Drop by for that unique, ‘one of a kind’ gift to remind you of Wanaka. Visitors not only get to browse and try on her entirely handmade collection, they are also able to see where she crafts her beautiful jewellery.
Amy’s aesthetic and appreciation for the handmade was shaped through her rural upbringing in Central Otago. The DIY mentality was instilled from a young age and the farm provided plenty of opportunities to create and explore. At Dunedin School of Art, her love of tools paired with her artistic creativity flourished in the metalsmith programme and a love of creating hand-forged jewellery was born.
Amy believes there is incredible value in crafting an object entirely by hand, knowing it won’t be reproduced in an exact

likeness. It not only retains that personal connection to its maker, but will also last lifetimes.
Custom work for all occasions, including engagement and wedding rings, are her passion. Amy connects with each customer and the lasting relationships that often develop as a result, are the ultimate perks of her job. Her goal is to create pieces that truly resonate with her customers and help showcase their individuality. As each piece is entirely handforged by Amy, no two pieces are alike. Walk-ins welcome or book a private curated session with Amy and have the studio to yourself.

SIT, BYO or BORROW!
In what may be a world-first, Wanaka is well on the way to being single use cup-free (SUCfree).

Cafes and caravans all over town have cup lending schemes or are running cup libraries and many are already completely SUCfree.
Hundreds of thousands of throwaway cups are being saved from landfill or contaminating our recycling streams every year.
We’d love you to get on board with this community initiative.
So while you’re here, remember to: Sit, BYO or borrow a cup. Thank you!
Welcome to beautiful, waste-conscious Wanaka!
Wasties, Mitre 11 and La Boutique are just some of the affectionate nicknames that locals call Wastebusters. Set up by the Wānaka community in 2000 to work for zero waste, Wastebusters funky and sustainable reuse centre is always buzzing with op-shoppers and people dropping off recycling and goods that need a new home. Find gear for your next outdoor adventure, hunt through our range of antiques and vintage clothing, or try on some new (to you) outfits. Voted Wānaka’s Favourite Clothing Store in the Local’s Choice Awards, chances are you’ll find that perfect thing, whatever you love.

The newest addition to wanaka’s exciting food scene!

Our mission – simply make the best tacos we can using NZ ingredients. For us that means starting with sourcing our whole corn kernels from a farmer named Pattie in Napier. Then using the traditional process of nixtamalization, we turn the corn into masa dough which is fed through Tony the Taco Press, and a delicious fresh corn tortilla is born. Our wood fire grill is at the heart of everything we make, this is where we lovingly grill fresh local ingredients, which are then nestled into your tasty, authentic taco. Best enjoyed with Mexico’s favourite cocktail – the Paloma.

5 DAY walks
01. Rob Roy Glacier Track

4–5 HR RETURN (10 KM)

One of New Zealand’s best half day walks. A 1 hour drive from Wanaka, the walk starts from the Raspberry Creek carpark. After a 15 minute walk through the valley you cross the West Matukituki River by swing bridge into beech forest. The track then climbs steadily through a small gorge along the Rob Roy Stream, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with spectacular views of the Rob Roy Glacier.
*In winter months please check track conditions with the Department of Conservation as the track can be subject to snow and ice.

02. Roy's Peak Track
5-6 HR RETURN (16 KM)
At the summit of this popular day walk is all-encompassing panorama that includes most of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding peaks and Mt Aspiring/Tititea. Before setting out, be mindful that this exposed track has no shelter from the sun or rain. Temperatures can drop quickly, even in midsummer – take warm and wind-proof clothing. There is challenging avalanche terrain above 1,000m during winter and in spring. Refer to www.avalanche.net.nz if planning a trip.
*Closed for lambing 1 October to 10 November.
03. Lindis Peak Track
4–5 HR RETURN (11 KM)

The track is signposted at the start of Old Faithful Road, off SH8. The view from the 1,226m summit is one of the most extensive in Central Otago. The vista includes the stunning St Bathans Range to the east and numerous peaks along the Main Divide – from the head of the Hopkins valley in the north, to Mount Aspiring/Tititea in the south.
*Closed for lambing 10 October to 5 December.
04. Dingle Burn Peninsula Track
CAR PARK TO TURIHUKA CONSERVATION AREA: 3–4 HR (11 KM)
Walking along Lake Hawea’s eastern shores there are great views up the Hunter valley and, on a clear day, to the west as far as Mount Aspiring/Tititea. From the car park, 8 km north of Timaru Creek, follow the 4WD track to Rocky Point and around the bluffs to Silver Island Bay, before gaining height to sidle around The Peninsula. The Turihuka Conservation Area is at the mouth of the Dingle Burn.
05. Isthmus Peak Track

ISTHMUS PEAK: 5–6 HRS RETURN (16 KM)
MATATIAHO CONSERVATION AREA: 5–7 HRS (15 KM)

This track is signposted just south of Stewart Creek on SH6. Follow the poled route along the creek until it joins a farm track. From here it’s a steep, winding, rocky climb to a skyline ridge, with sections where bikers will need to dismount and push. A sign on the ridge points right to the track to 1,385m Isthmus Peak, and left along the exposed ridge to the Matatiaho Conservation Area. Closed for fawning 20 November to 20 December. Craig Burn access: A short walk from the car park leads to a pleasant picnic spot on the lower Craig Burn. There is no formed track above this point on the conservation area; access is via scrubby, steep and rocky terrain.

10 SHORT walks
01. Mount Iron Walk
Arguably Wanaka’s most popular walk, Mount Iron is an impressive, glacier carved, 240m rocky knoll. From its summit a great panorama unfolds: lakes Wanaka and Hawea, the Cardrona and upper Clutha valleys and all the surrounding peaks.

Loop track: 1 hr 30 min (4.5 km)
02. Diamond Lake Track
Spectacular views include Lake Wanaka and a skyline dominated by the surrounding peaks. The distinct shape of Mt Aspiring/Tititea lies to the west. Sections of this track are steep, with significant fall hazard. The track is often slippery, even in summer – take extreme care. This track is not recommended during the winter months due to ice.
Circuit track return: 45 min, 2.5 km
Lookout return: 1 hr, 2 km
Lake Wanaka lookout return: 2 hr, 5 km

Rocky Mountain summit track return: 3 hr, 7 km
03. Beacon Point Walk
The track continues from Bremner Bay to Beacon Point, with great lake and mountain views along the way. It suits all ages and abilities, including baby buggies and bikes.
30 min (1.5 km)
04. Gladstone Track
From the Hawea dam the track follows the foreshore in front of Lake Hawea township before travelling through open farmland to John’s Creek Recreation Reserve.
1 hr 45 mins (4.5 km)

05. Glendhu bay track
Incorporating the Waterfall Creek Track, continue past the creek for one hour on terraces above Lake Wanaka, before dropping onto a small northfacing beach suitable for swimming. From here the track continues around to Glendhu Bay.
3 hrs (12.5 km)
06. Deans Bank Track
Loop track: the Deans Bank Track situated on the Clutha River/Mata-Au near Albert Town is a one-way multiuse track popular with mountain bikers. A walking track leads down to Dublin Bay.
Loop track: 1 hr 30 min - 2 hrs (11.5 km)

07. The Blue Pools

One hours drive from Wanaka in the Makarora area is this scenic short walk. Perfect for kids and an ideal swimming spot in summer, walk through beech/ tawhero forest to a swing bridge over the Makarora River. After crossing the river, follow a boardwalk to a viewing platform over the Blue Pools. Soon after, cross the Blue Pools bridge for great views up the river gorge.
Return track: 1 hr (1.5 km)
08. Eely Point Walk
Eely Point is a popular, sheltered boating and picnicking area. From Wanaka town follow the lakeshore to the right past the marina, and on to Eely Point. Carrying on round the point for another five minutes takes you to Bremner Bay, a good family swimming spot.
20 min (1 km)
09. Outlet Track
Spectacular scenery makes this popular for both walkers and bikers. The track follows the Clutha River/ Mata-Au; start or finish at the Lake Wanaka outlet or Hikuwai Conservation Area in Albert Town. Bikers should ride carefully and give way to walkers. The Hikuwai mountain bike loop above the main river track gives a more challenging ride.
1 hr (3 km)
10. Waterfall Creek Track
This track starts from the western end of Roys Bay, soon reaching Wanaka Station Park, a beautiful picnic area on the left. The track then winds along the lake’s western shores for superb views, passing Edgewater Resort and Rippon Vineyard before reaching Waterfall Creek.
1 hr (2.5 km)
