M!NT Trust, a local charity set up to support those with intellectual disabilities, has today announced it will receive funds raised from the annual Hirepool Charity Golf Classic. The Wanaka based not-for-profit seeks to foster inclusion and empower intellectually disabled individuals to live vibrant and meaningful lives. Trustee and M!NT parent Amanda Dorset says the announcement was humbling, “To hear that we were the beneficiary for this tournament was such an honour.” Dorset said. Hosted by the Wanaka Golf Club, the three day event will be held on 18 - 20 March. The final day wraps with a charity auction, which includes items such as a luxury accommodation

package, a signed Beauden Barrett practice jersey, a Cardrona ski package and more. Hello all, I hope the first week of Autumn has been a relaxing one. Great to see the Paralympic team continuing the success of the Olympic team in Beijing. Here is a bit of what has been going on the past week. The week began with Police receiving several driving complaints around the area, one resulting in a positive breath alcohol result of 807mcg/L. They will be off to court and will more than likely be spending time on their bike in the coming months. Speaking of which, as it is starting to get darker earlier and lighter later, please spend a few dollars on front and back lights for you bike. Whilst you are there spend a few more dollars and get yourself a helmet. A friendly reminder that helmets are designed for your head and not your handlebars. There was a spate of Burglaries and damage done to properties in several locations around the Anderson Road / Mt Iron areas. Vehicles and boats parked in private driveways were entered into and items from car batteries to scooters were taken. Several tyres and safety strops were slashed and wingmirrors broken. The Good Spot was broken into, and their tip jar emptied. We do have CCTV footage of the offender but if you live in the area and have road facing cameras, we would love to hear from you. This offending occurred last Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Police attended several Family Harm episodes throughout the week, please seek help if things are getting tough at home. It is the time of year where the stags (Deer with the big antlers) like to find their female friends. This often means coming down from the hills and onto our roads. Please be extra careful and call Police if you do spot any wildlife on or near the roads. Our great friends from Wanaka Rotary had planted out the car park and rest area beside the Glendhu Bay camp ground. We were disappointed to hear that over 20 plants have been dug out and stolen, some of these plants are five years old. If you have been offered cheap plants or know who might have done this, please let us know. Lastly a cautionary tale about some boaties on a multiday trip up the lake who unfortunately told their family they would be back on Thursday, when in fact they meant Friday. For those heading out into the wilderness, it’s great to share that information with your family in case a rescue is required, however be clear with the message. Save distressing family members and involving search resources. On this occasion the mystery was solved before volunteers were deployed. Have a great week everyone.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Get Creative with watercolours in a relaxed & fun setting I have been running koha/donation based watercolour lessons at the Wanaka Arts Centre since October 2021. I am an artist who is passionate about people being able to experience watercolour painting with good quality materials & supplies and offer my time to the local Wanaka community on a koha basis on Monday and Thursday evenings. People often have a bad start with watercolour painting, as their first experience is likely to have been with low cost materials, which is totally understandable. Who wants to go out and spend a lot of money on materials and equipment they may never use again. However the quality of the art you produce is reflective of the materials you use with watercolour. At the classes you can try out good quality materials without a huge set up cost. I like to run a relaxed lesson, where you leave hopefully having had a laugh amongst good
Here we come – another 3,221 hours of support! 3,221 hours were given to the Wanaka community by the Mount Aspiring College Year 13 students during 2021, through its Students in the Community (SIC) programme. As Co-ordinator of the programme for this year, I’m totally impressed and very enthusiastic to work with the senior students to repeat this amazing result. Our region is so lucky to receive this voluntary support, and equally the senior students are very lucky to have access to all of these community opportunities. It’s a real win-win situation. The SIC programme is fully set to repeat these acts of kindness and giving back over the next seven months. All year 13 students

use their time and skills to make a difference in the community, undertaking weekly placements and short-term projects in a variety of areas eg. helping at preschools and primaries, visiting elderly, mentoring students, buddying with students with special needs; volunteering at local events, library, fundraising, theatre; coaching sports; planting and conservation projects; teaching technology to seniors; Mint Charitable Trust, Kahu Youth, Volunteer South, Food for Love, SPCA and more.
