CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE RIDE AT A TIME…

LPG filling 8am-8pm daily

19 Ardmore Street

Written by: Ashley Peters

WORD (World Off-road Riding Department) is a non profit youth mountain bike organisation. Founded in 2013, they are on a mission to enable growth through adventure for 7-17 year old Tamariki & Rangitahi! This amazing organisation launched in Wānaka late last year, with 75 kids joining the term time programmes and we’re stoked to see it back for Term 1. This is the club you wish you had when you were a kid. Riders learn sweet bike skills, make new friends, do the mahi with trail maintenance, and gobble down snacks, so many snacks! WORD is committed and passionate about creating awesome experiences to build youth confidence, develop friendships, and foster a life-long love of mountain biking. Starting 8 February for 7

weeks, WORD meets at a different MTB destination around Wānaka. Each day, different age and gender groups meet their passionate and experienced WORD Instructor (1:8 ratio) to explore the trails! WORD believes in equality in order to reduce the barriers to participation and building connections within our community and environment. While the organisation has made amazing progress in striving for equality and creating opportunities for everyone in mountain biking, there is still room for growth and support for young women and girls. With the help from the Sport Otago Tu Manawa Funding, girls and young women make up 30% of the participants and 50% of the instructing team! Hi everyone, hope your week has been well. Here is what has been going on in the area. On Monday a burglary report was received. In this burglary an outboard motor was stolen. If you know anything about it, or see a motor going for cheap somewhere, then please let us know. There was also a report taken of threatening language and a subsequent trespass. Tuesday saw a flatting situation deteriorate, as it does happen. It resolved itself. Separate from that incident a trespass notice was served as well.

CRIME LINE

Ruth Brown

On Wednesday there was a low speed vehicle collision involving a car and a person by the lake front. That individual sustained moderate injuries. Thankfully the driver eventually made themselves known to us and saved us having to go track him down. A group of young teenagers on Thursday evening had their fun cut short and alcohol confiscated. As we were heading home for the evening, someone thought it was a good idea to drive on the wrong side of the BP roundabout and are now off to court on a drink driving charge. Another person is also facing court action after doing the right thing in the wrong way. Offering to pick someone up and drive them home when over the limit yourself is never a good idea. You may have noticed a bit of activity around town towards seatbelt and cell phone usage compliance. We will continue to be proactive in this area as it is a major contributing factor to road injury and deaths in New Zealand. We don’t want to have to knock on a loved one’s door to deliver the bad news simply because of that non-emergency call or not being bothered to put a seat belt on because it's only down the road. On a lighter note, I see we took a bit of stick on Facebook for moving vehicles on after parking on the broken yellow lines outside the pie shop in town. It’s not a local two-minute parking zone and there is a large carpark just across the road. It also makes it very difficult at times for people to back out of the legitimate angle parks outside the shop, so please don’t be lazy, walk the extra distance from the carpark to get your pie or ice cream.

If you would like us to include a birthday and give the gift of a free coffee phone 03 443 7805 or email hello@mymessenger.co.nz

WANT YOUR PET FEATURED? Email entry to: ads@mymessenger.co.nz

Saturday appeared to be a day of rest for offenders, with no offences reported, only lost property. On that, there is still a large amount of property at the station from the summer break we would love to reunite with its owners. Sunday saw a lot of paperwork being caught up on and a few people spoken to about various matters that were outstanding.

YES! I AM A GOOD BOY AND VERY HANDSOME TOO.

Well that’s it for this week. Remember we are still in the Red of the traffic light settings, so keep up the scanning in, wearing masks and sanitise regularly, we want to keep Omicron out of our area the best we can.

Have you been to puppy classes? Book in your puppy for one hour lessons in a four week block on Mondays at 6.00pm. Call our team for more details.

On Friday an individual was arrested for a family harm matter. Police also attended another family harm where one of the parties was removed from the address to allow a cooling off period.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Gluten free gingerbread decorating and morning tea!

Wanaka Coeliac Kids Club is now in its second year. The goals of the Club are to support children and their whanau living with coeliac disease.

written by Zoe Huggett

It is estimated that 65,000 Kiwis have coeliac disease and approximately 80% of these people are unaware they have the condition. Coeliac disease is a lifelong auto-immune disorder. It damages the intestinal lining and thus ability to absorb nutrients. It can cause crippling symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting and joint pain.

Come join us for this year’s first Wanaka Coeliac NZ Kids Club event hosted by Emma from Fog Food. We will be decorating ‘gingerpeeps’ and then sharing a delicious morning tea. Other events in the pipeline include sushi making.

If left undiagnosed or if gluten continues to be consumed, coeliac disease can cause infertility, poor growth and calcification of teeth and bones in children, multiple nutrient malabsorption. It also has links to depression and occasionally bowel cancer. Coeliac disease can be effectively treated with a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet.

Kids class: 10.00 - 11.00am

Gingerbread decorating and morning tea, Saturday, 12 February at the Wanaka Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street. Morning tea: 11.00am - 12.00pm Open to kids and adults, coeliac and gluten free. Cost: $5 per person (same price for kids/adults/ CNZ Members/Non Members). Tickets: www.fogfood.nz/our-workshops For more information on coeliac disease visit www.coeliac.org.nz

Wanaka’s festival of ideas, has been cancelled

written by Sally Woodfield

The three-day event, presented bi-annually by the Festival of Colour, was scheduled to take place 25-27 March, but following the move to the Covid Protection Framework ‘Red’ setting, the Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust made the decision to cancel the festival. “We considered all options and we feel we cannot guarantee the health and wellbeing of our speakers, audience members, staff and volunteers, and the wider community,” said Trust Chair, Alistair King. “We know this is incredibly disappointing and we appreciate how passionate our community is about this event which brings people together to listen, question, discuss and reflect on issues that affect us all. “We thank our loyal audiences, sponsors and partners for their support during this challenging time, and in particular Milford

Asset Management, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Lakes Trust, Creative New Zealand and the Otago Community Trust.”

Covid-19, and a number of speakers from the 2020 festival were to feature in the 2022 programme.

The 2022 programme featured speakers on subjects as diverse as sport, climate change, family relationships, death and dying, and the changing face of the media, along with a theatre season.

Mr King said Aspiring Conversations is one of many events having to cancel with the reverberations felt among artists and audiences throughout the country.

This is the second time Aspiring Conversations has been cancelled due to the impact of

Aspiring Conversations will return next year as part of the Festival of Colour.

Creative Wellbeing Programme starting in Central Otago

“I’m really excited to be contributing to this initiative,” said Fairbairn. “Personally, I have found being connected with other people and being involved in creative pursuits has been helpful in my journey.”

An innovative creative programme begins in Wanaka on 8 February and is open to anyone experiencing isolation or mental health challenges. Creative sessions will be held weekly in Cromwell, Wanaka and Alexandra with a variety of activities in a supportive environment. The programme will still run under Red Light with vaccine passes, masks and distancing.

The free programme aims to support anyone 18 years and doesn’t require a referral from a health specialist. Funding from the Ministry of Culture & Heritage has allowed Dunedin based creative space, Artsenta, to expand to Central Otago after successfully piloting the programme in the Waitaki District last year.

Local artist, Janie Shaw, will lead the creative side of the programme which has an arts and crafts focus. Janie is a visual artist and musician based in St Bathans. “This programme focuses on creativity as a form of self-expression and self-care, rather than artistic skill,” says Shaw. “We will provide a wide range of art and craft activities so hopefully there will be something for everyone.”

written by Paul Smith

Peer support worker, Fiona Fairbairn, who is based in Makarora and an active member of the Wanaka swimming community, will provide wellbeing support to attendees.

Anyone interested can email central@artsenta.org or get in touch on their Facebook page by searching Central Otago Creative Wellbeing.

Capturing the essence of modern living this home is spread across two levels, the upper floor plays host to a large open plan living space which is light and bright with a generous kitchen and oversized island bench being the hero where you can easily imagine yourself entertaining family and friends. You can relax and appreciate the lake and mountain views from the covered balconies with glass balustrades and in those cooler months enjoy the outdoor heating which will keep you toasty warm. Downstairs there are four bedrooms featuring built-in wardrobes, sliding doors leading to outdoor spaces with concrete patios. Two fully tiled bathrooms with underfloor heating along with a separate laundry and extra walk in storage add to the list of attributes this house has to offer. Don’t delay, call us now for a private viewing or come to one of our open homes. Vaccine passports and a mask will be required when viewing this property. wanaka.ljhooker.co.nz

THINKING OF RENOVATING?

How to avoid budget blow outs. Are you thinking of renovating but are daunted by the prospect? You are not alone in this. In a recent survey, over 400 respondents* said that encountering unforeseen costs and budget overruns was their single biggest fear. Sadly, this fear isn’t unfounded. According to independent industry research^ a typical renovation project results in 30% of costs being wasted.

6B McCormick Street, Wanaka

So how can you avoid this? Local renovation specialist Kathleen Magon from Refresh Renovations shares her tips for minimising your risk while renovating.

For lease

Looking for new Wanaka premises? Suitable for a number of uses, this contemporary building is situated on a popular Three Parks street with a great mix of national and local businesses as neighbours. The building has a floor area of approximately 343 sqm including an office, bathroom, utility room, and large warehouse area with roller door access. The property also benefits from 6 car parks and excellent street visibility with well-thought-out signage opportunities to increase the profile of your business in a thriving commercial area. With the neighbouring unit already leased and with a completion date nearing, this would be an excellent location for your business. Contact me for additional information and to arrange an inspection of your new Wanaka premises.

•

Define your objective – what do you want to achieve and why

•

Make a plan – break the project down into achievable milestones

•

Create and stick to your budget – try to avoid budget creep

•

Plan for the unexpected – have a contingency fund around 15-20% of your total budget

•

Create a project schedule – be clear on all your major deadlines

•

Expect the unexpected – even the most meticulous planning can’t foresee everything

•

Compromise – Set realistic specifications, avoid splurging on luxuries that add little value

Rachel Walsh M: 027 443 2683 E: rachel.walsh@raywhite.com Wanaka Real Estate Ltd Licensed (REAA 2008)

Your local law firm,

wherever you are

Above all Kathleen says that “planning is key”, even the smallest of projects such as a single room renovation still require proper planning. Homeowners should expect and plan to spend a portion of their renovation budget in the initial planning stages, as doing so can help de-risk your project. You might also consider using a project manager, they can help make the experience more enjoyable and more cost effective in the long run. To help determine who to use—look at their past projects, customer testimonials and what services they provide. Some might only provide design or construction services whereas others can provide an end-to-end renovation service. Once you have found a potential match - get in touch.
