Wānaka set to serve up two days of top table tennis For the first time, Wānaka will host a table tennis tournament, with some of the South Island’s best players heading to the Wānaka Recreation Centre on 18–19 September. 26 teams from all around the South Island will be competing at different levels to win Graded trophies. Supported by the Wanaka District Club, this tournament has been going for fifty-three years and has been responsible for maintaining interest in this sport which has many benefits. Firstly, it encourages hand/eye coordination that sends messages to the brain, keeping those channels alive and open, necessary for good mental health. It allows the players to increase their anticipation and reflex skills, again supporting balance and reaction times which are beneficial to our continual good health.
As a bonus for the people of Wānaka a free entry to the tournament is available. A demonstration of those skills will be given by two of the very best players on Thursday, 17 September at 7.00pm. We encourage families to come along for thirty minutes or so to see where this sport can take you. Submitted by Tim Hawkins

Gearing up for kitten season, foster families wanted
MY COMMUNITY NEWS SPACES AVAILABLE Cat Rescue Wānaka is seeking out the help of local individuals, couples, and families through opening their homes to foster kittens. Each year, from Spring to Autumn, the amount of cats needing care gets a little much for our volunteers alone to handle. In anticipation of the influx of litters coming soon, we’re reaching out to the community to ask… would you like to foster a kitten with us? Being a foster parent is typically a commitment of 2-8 weeks and we supply everything needed to do the job (food, litter, bedding, paid vet bills). All you need to do is offer a loving home (where pets
are allowed) for kitties that need a respite before moving on to their forever home. Enjoying the companionship of a cat for a short time is a huge aid in curtailing the local stray cat population; the cuddles and zoomies are just a bonus! Pianist Abhinath Berry will bring an afternoon of beautiful, dramatic and virtuosic piano music to Aspiring Village on Sunday, 14 September, with a programme featuring works by Chopin, Ginastera, Liszt and Wagner. The first half focuses on Frédéric Chopin, one of the great composers for the piano. His two Op. 48 Nocturnes offer contrasting moods, from the powerful and dramatic to the gentle and reflective, while his Third and Fourth Scherzi combine energy, elegance and moments of quiet beauty. The second half moves into more colourful and theatrical territory.
Ginastera’s Piano Sonata No. 1 brings the rhythms and energy of Argentine music, while Liszt’s Rhapsodie espagnole offers a dazzling take on Spanish melodies. The programme concludes with Liszt’s dramatic piano transcription of Wagner’s Isoldens Liebestod, bringing the passion and intensity of the opera house to the piano. With music ranging from intimate and lyrical to powerful and exhilarating, Abhinath Berry’s performance promises a captivating afternoon for both classical music lovers and those new to the repertoire. OUT&about Wānaka celebrates four years with community party Four years of Pride in Wānaka calls for birthday cake. OUT&about Wānaka is turning four, and to celebrate, the team is throwing a relaxed community birthday party at the Lake Wānaka Centre on Saturday, 12 September. Hosted by drag king Hugo Grrrl, the afternoon will feature music, face painting, hot drinks and, of course, birthday cake. OUT&about Wānaka Chair Ollie Harcus said the birthday was an opportunity to get everyone together and say thank you. “It’s been incredible to see how much OUT&about has grown and how many people have got
involved over the last four years. Volunteers, local businesses, funders, trustees, performers and our wider community have all played a part. We really couldn’t have done it without them.” This year looks a little different, following the decision to move Wānaka Pride Week to every second year. “Moving to a biennial format gives us the time and resources to make Pride Week really special. IN THE EARLY HOURS of 26 August, Police were called to Edgewater Resort alongside Ambulance staff following reports of an alleged assault. POLICE WERE CALLED to a disorder incident on Ardmore Street on 29 August involving a physical altercation between two individuals. One person sustained a minor nose injury. IN THE EARLY HOURS of Saturday morning, Police assisted Fire and Emergency New Zealand at Eely Point Reserve following reports of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, emergency services found the front of the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, with the fire appearing to originate from the engine compartment. The fire was extinguished by FENZ and inquiries into the circumstances of the incident were completed at the scene. No injuries were reported. WET AND CHALLENGING weather conditions across the district have kept Police and partner agencies busy throughout the past week. With further significant rainfall forecast this week, Police are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise extreme caution if they do need to be on the roads during weather events. POLICE HAVE RECEIVED several reports of vehicles losing traction and leaving the roadway on local ski field access roads during recent winter conditions. Drivers are reminded to adjust their driving to the conditions, particularly on alpine roads where snow, ice, mud and reduced visibility can quickly create hazardous driving environments. POLICE ATTENDED A SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH on 27 August, on the Crown Range Road. The vehicle lost traction while negotiating a corner in snowy conditions. The driver reported the vehicle began to slide and rotate before colliding with a roadside barrier, causing damage to the front right of the vehicle. No one was injured. POLICE CONTINUE TO REMIND motorists that alcohol and driving are a dangerous combination. Police will continue to actively target impaired drivers and hold offenders to account. POLICE STOPPED A 43-YEAR-OLD MALE driver on the Wānaka-Luggate Highway on 28 August. He returned a result of 349 mcg/L. He was issued with an infringement notice. Police encourage anyone who plans to drink to arrange a safe alternative form of transport. DANGEROUS DRIVING can be reported to Police via 105, either online or by phone. If there is an immediate threat to public safety, call 111. POLICE AND WĀNAKA Land Search and Rescue responded to an emergency in the Treble Cone Ski Area on 31 August. The response was activated when a male slipped while trying to recover a snowboard and fell approximately 200m into steep terrain. The individual was extracted via Air Ambulance via winch and transported to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.

August Update from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade
We responded to 27 callouts in August, up from 19 in July, and we’ve been kept busy with a bit of everything. It seems a few people around town may not have paid attention to the last Firewatch….grrr! We’ve had a couple of near misses involving ashes that weren’t disposed of properly. As a reminder: stash your ash in a metal bucket, saturate it with water, and leave them for at least five days before disposal. Don’t tip them into a flower bed beside your timber-clad house. We also attended two separate incidents involving wood burners. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to get us round and have things checked out. There was a fire at a construction site in Hidden Hills. This is a high-risk area, so we were pleased to get that under control quickly. There was also the large vegetation fire in Albert Town. Thanks to the support of our neighbouring brigades, it was brought under control swiftly, and with no structures damaged, we’ll count that as a win. Elsewhere, we attended a few car crashes, a car fire, helped several homeowners deal with flooding following the heavy rain, and responded to the usual array of alarm activations at commercial premises.

Food For Love is proud to celebrate 10 years of supporting the local community, marking a significant milestone in April 2026. Since its inception, Food For Love has been dedicated to providing meals and care to individuals and families during times of need. What began as a small, community-driven initiative has grown into a vital support network, made possible through the generosity and commitment of volunteers, partners, and supporters. To commemorate this milestone, Food For Love is hosting a special 10-year celebration on Friday, 17 April 2026. This event will bring together those who have contributed to the organisation’s journey over the past decade, recognising the collective effort that has made a meaningful difference in the community.
“This milestone is not just about Food For Love - it’s about the incredible people who have given their time, resources, and compassion over the past 10 years,” said Bex Sarginson, Co-Founder and Operations Manager of Food For Love. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has played a part in supporting our community.” This is an open invitation to all volunteers, partners, and supporters both past and present. Albert Town residents are invited to come along to the Albert Town Community Association’s (ATCA) Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 18 March at The Albie Tavern from 7.00 – 8.00pm. The AGM is a chance for locals to hear about the projects, events and initiatives that have helped bring the community together over the past year, and to find out what’s planned for the year ahead. The ATCA has been involved in a range of community activities designed to strengthen local connections and support a thriving neighbourhood. The AGM provides an opportunity for residents to meet the committee, hear a short update on recent work, and share ideas about future initiatives for Albert Town.
