At the beginning of 2025, the Upper Clutha History Society launched its new logo, website and social media accounts for Wānaka History.
Wānaka History is made up of two main components; an extensive website and a QR-Code/Plaque project for physical markers of important historical sites across the district. So far, plaques have been installed at the Queensberry Inn and the Wānaka Hotel, with a plaque at the original police precinct to be installed by mid-April. The primary goal is to bring the stories and vibrant history of the Upper Clutha region to life for the local community, visitors and tourists. The new website, www.wanakahistory.org, contains countless stories, biographies and images, as well as past newsletters and further resources. Content is uploaded on a regular basis, and the site is expected to
continue growing over the coming years.
You can also find Wānaka History on social media for weekly posts about interesting stories and images from the past.
The Society is privileged to receive support and assistance from an expanded group of volunteers who are engaged in continued capture of historical records, creating digital archives, oral history interviews and content creation.
The Society has received grant funding support from Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust and Queenstown Lakes District Council for this ambitious project.
New members and volunteers are welcome and encouraged to participate through the Wānaka History website. The website also allows individuals to register for the regular Upper Clutha History Society Newsletter – ‘THOSE WERE THE DAYS’.

I’m reaching out today with an urgent call for help as winter approaches. For many families in our community, the season brings not only the cold but a crisis that is becoming harder to overcome each year. Imagine a dedicated member of our community - perhaps a teacher, police officer, or a member of the Fire Brigade - someone who selflessly serves us all. Now, picture that person or a member of their wh ā nau suddenly facing an unexpected challenge, such as a medical emergency or a loss of work hours. This could reduce the family’s income to a single wage, leading to tough decisions: should they pay for food or keep the house warm? There isn't enough money for both. This scenario is not just hypothetical - it's the reality for many families, a fact highlighted in the Quality-of-Life survey, where one in three homes in Wānaka has little or no disposable income to cover unforeseen expenses.
Winter should never be a time when children go cold at home but for many families, that’s exactly what will happen. With inflation and energy costs at record highs, many of our neighbours are living with no cushion, vulnerable to a harsh winter if anything unexpected disrupts their financial situation.
The impact is especially severe for children. No child should have to face winter without warmth - yet without support, many will suffer. Cold homes make it harder for children to focus at school, more susceptible to colds and flu or enjoy the simple comfort of a warm meal at home. This is not just a matter of physical comfort; it’s a matter of health, well-being, and opportunity for the future.
This year, we estimate that Community Link will need $60,000 to meet the anticipated demand for heating assistance. Unfortunately, securing the necessary funds has never been more challenging. With government support decreasing and competition for charitable donations intensifying, we’re facing an uphill battle to raise the funds required to meet this need.
That’s where you come in. The crisis is real. We need your help to ensure that no child in our community goes cold this winter. Your donation will go directly to providing heating assistance to families who need it most. Every dollar will help us provide firewood and heating assistance to keep local families warm and safe throughout the winter.
If you have questions or would like to discuss how you can help, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly on 03 443 7799. You can also donate online through the Community Link website or via the QR code below.
On behalf of the families who will rely on your generosity, I thank you deeply. Your support helps ensure no one in our community has to face a cold winter alone.
Sincerely,
Kate Murray

On Saturday, 26 April, Paetara Aspiring Central will host another highly anticipated Castaways Recycled Clothing Sale.
The sale will feature 30 local sellers o ering a wide range of second-hand clothing, accessories, and footwear for men, women and kids. The event promotes a more eco-friendly approach to fashion by giving gently used items a second life and encouraging sustainable practices. As the global movement toward sustainable fashion grows, the sale o ers shoppers a chance to nd unique and stylish pieces without contributing to the waste of fast fashion. Each seller has carefully curated their items, which range from vintage nds to gently worn modern pieces. Whether you’re looking for statement accessories, comfortable footwear, or a wardrobe addition, there’s something for every style.
The Castaways Recycled Clothing Sale is not just about shopping; it’s a celebration of conscious consumption and community. By purchasing second-hand, attendees will not only get a bargain, but also reduce their environmental footprint. With the fashion industry being a signi cant contributor to global waste, events like these challenge traditional retail practices and o er a sustainable alternative for fashion lovers.
WHERE:
WHEN:
More than 9,200kg of waste was diverted from land ll at the 2025 Wānaka A&P Show - around 58% of total event waste.
A key contributor was the Show to Snow initiative, developed with Wānaka Wastebusters and Cardrona Alpine Resort. The trial saw 1,086kg of food waste and 5,258kg of manure collected for composting through Cardrona’s Plant a Seed programme, which supports native planting across the maunga.
Food waste was gathered from vendors, hospitality areas, and the Home Industry Pavilion. Bokashi-layered bins helped control odours, and collection stations in high-tra c areas encouraged strong participation from show-goers.
Recycling also received focus, with 200 bins monitored across the grounds. Standardised lids, clear signage, and on-site support contributed to clean streams and reduced contamination.
While the progress made this year is promising, organisers view it as part of a longer-term commitment. Continued re nement and community involvement will help shape future improvements.
The 2026 Wānaka A&P Show will be held on 13-14 March. For updates and more information, visit www.wanakashow.co.nz.

Earth Day is a global date in the calendar to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Here in Wānaka, we’re fortunate enough to live in paradise, with the lakes, rivers, and mountains on our doorstep. We want to protect this natural beauty and ensure it’s available for generations to come. If you’d like to get involved, WAI Wānaka are hosting a volunteer beach clean-up event at Wānaka lakefront on Earth Day, Tuesday, 22 April from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Head along to help care for local waterways, while gathering valuable data. The rubbish collected will be sorted and recorded into Sustainable Coastline’s national Litter Intelligence database. You can also be a citizen scientist, with ‘Get Your Feet Wet’ on Thursday, 24 April from 4.00 - 5.00pm. It’s a chance to learn about, measure and record a selection of indicators that re ect water quality. It’s about having fun, hands on learning, and making a positive impact on local waterways. Held at the lake entrance of Bullock Creek, opposite Speights Ale House. Look out for the WAI ags.
Both events are during the school holidays, so take kids and teach them a thing or two about protecting our environment. Head to https://waiwanaka.nz/events/ for more information.
Notice is given that the Annual General meeting of Wanaka SeniorNet will take place at 10.00am on Thursday, 1 May. All members of the community are welcome. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills, we have something for everyone. Don’t miss the chance to learn and have fun with like-minded people. This will be followed by a presentation from the Wanaka Oral History Project, ‘Behind the Scenes’. Everyone has a story, and the Upper Clutha History Society has an Oral History Project that is trying to capture some of these stories to build a picture of our area as it once was. Three SeniorNet members work behind the scenes and will show you how they produce high-quality snippets from the original interviews.

Update on the Month of March 2025 from our Fire Service
help. Volunteer Firefighters are not entitled to the same ACC benefits as Career Firefighters as we are considered to be non-employees. Volunteers are not covered for physical or mental injuries sustained while responding to calls. We serve our communities nationwide 24/7 and attend a wide variety of incidents, not just fires, and some can be traumatic to say the least.
A Queenstown Volunteer Firefighter has created a petition simply asking that Volunteers get the same ACC coverage as Career Firefighters. If you would like to help out and sign the petition, simply visit the website of the United Fire Brigades Association which is ufba.org.nz. Here you will find the Members Petition to Change ACC Legislation for Volunteer Firefighters which has a link to the petition. Your help is greatly appreciated.
