Wānaka will host an elite field of multisport athletes for the HiveEnergy Challenge Wānaka Multi on 18 October, now celebrating its sixth year.
The event has become a key early-season hit-out for those preparing for Coast to Coast or adventure races like Godzone. The race continues to grow, with the duathlon category up 40% and individual multisport entries increasing more than 10%, cementing its place as a spring highlight for competitive athletes. Competitors tackle Wānaka’s stunning terrain, trails, and lakefront, testing fitness, nutrition, and equipment - making it the perfect preparation for bigger events later in the season. Returning champions Simone Maier and Hamish Elliot will be competing alongside top athletes Sam King,
Flavio Vianna, Catherine Atkinson, Morne Pienaar, and Sam Pearce. They’ll be joined by exciting new competitors, including multisport legend Elina Ussher and Coast to Coast Two-Day Champion Emily Trevail and Courtney Hawke ensuring a high-calibre field.“

Lindis Pass Conservation Group Turns 21!
This year marks 21 years since the rst workdays of the Lindis Pass Conservation Group.
The LPCG set itself up as an Inc. Society soon after the local Forest and Bird branch was approached in 2004 by the Department of Conservation, for conservation volunteers to clear sweet brier from Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve. Driving through the Pass today, notice how free of sweet briar it is, as well as wilding trees and, hopefully, Russell Lupin. If it were not for the hard work year on year by LPCG volunteers, these weeds would be rampant. The overall integrity and visibility of the soaring upturned layers of rock, softly mantled in clean snow tussock grassland, which form the hallmark ridges and faces of the Lindis Pass,
would not be so impressively appreciated.
The LPCG is also working to reclothe bare areas with snow tussock grown from collected seed, and to return Kowhai and other 'shadow' species to the Pass landscape.
The AGM is being held up at the Pass (lower Otago side) on Sunday, 12 October. Starting at 10.00am, followed by a visit to check on the planted Kowhais, and the mother tree. All are welcome and fresh volunteers for the coming work season to May 2026 are keenly encouraged.

There are over 85 short clips organised by topics, and 20 storyteller pages that include longer versions of the interviews. This number will continue to grow as the UCHS’s team of quali ed Oral Historians continue to gather, edit and produce rst-hand programme.
The Society has received grant funding support from Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Graham & Olive West Trust, and Wānaka Masonic Lodge for this ambitious project.

Update on the Month of September from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade
Today I want to talk about multi plugs. To some it might not be the most interesting of topics but a lot of fires attended by Fire and Emergency are because of overloaded multi plugs. Always use good quality, certified multi plugs with built in safety features. Never daisy chain multi plugs, by that I mean run one multi plug off another one. This is a serious fire risk because it bypasses built in safety
mechanisms and makes it difficult to track the total electrical load. High wattage devices like heaters should not be plugged into multi boards. Too many devices running off one multi plug can exceed the multi plugs capacity and cause it to overheat. Never use them in enclosed spaces such as under rugs or furniture. This can trap heat and create a fire hazard.
