With less than two weeks to go until the Abbeyfield Wānaka Winter Fayre, excitement is building as organisers put the finishing touches on what promises to be a fantastic day for the community.

Recently, the organising team gathered to map out the event, planning where the stalls, entertainment, family activities and food will be located. After months of preparation, everything is coming together. The response from the community has been incredible. Businesses have generously donated raffle prizes and food, and local entertainers have stepped forward to help make the day a success. Visitors can also look forward to four fantastic raffles throughout the day, with one drawn every hour, giving everyone plenty of chances to win.

While the Winter Fayre is a wonderful opportunity to bring people together, it also supports something much bigger. Abbeyfield Wānaka is working to create a warm, affordable home where older people can

continue living independently, while enjoying the companionship, security and sense of belonging that comes from living as part of a small, supportive household.

Every person who comes along on Saturday, 18 July, whether it’s for a coffee, a sausage sizzle, the local stalls or the raffles, will be helping bring that vision closer to reality. If you can’t make it along, but would still like to support the project, donations can be made through the Abbeyfield Wānaka Givealittle page.

Join us from 10.00am until 2.00pm at the Wānaka Community Hub on McDougall Street and be part of a day that celebrates the very best of our community, while helping build a brighter future for local seniors.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS

Food for Love reaches 10,000 meal milestone

As winter settles into the Upper Clutha, local charity Food for Love is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand, delivering a record-breaking 10,000 home-cooked meals over the past year alone. This milestone represents a sharp 10% increase in service delivery within the last 12 months, compounding a massive 144% growth in nominations over the previous two years.

The volunteer-led organisation is now calling on the community for financial support to ensure it can keep pace with the rapidly rising need and ensure their freezers are well stocked for the winter months ahead.

Food for Love provides fresh, nutritious meals to residents navigating exceptionally difficult times. The charity steps in when individuals and families are recovering from major surgery, grieving a loss, living with dementia, managing the challenges of aging, battling terminal illnesses, or caring for sick children.

"Behind every single one of those 10,000 meals is a deeply personal story," says Sue Clarke, General Manager of Food for Love. "It could be a neighbour recovering from chemotherapy, a mother splitting her time between home and the NICU, or a family facing sudden trauma."

Food for Love is launching a community-wide appeal. As an added incentive, anyone who makes a financial donation of any size during the month

of July will automatically enter a draw to win a trailer load of dry firewood, split and delivered locally.

Donations can be made directly via internet banking using the details below. To enter the winter firewood draw, please ensure your details are filled out correctly. The winner will be drawn and announced on 3 August 2026. For full details visit: foodforlovewanaka.com/donate-win

Community invited to celebrate Matariki on the lakefront

Wānaka’s lakefront and Dinosaur Park will once again be the setting for a special gathering on Friday, 10 July from 2.00pm, as Kāhu Youth invites the community to gather and celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. Matariki celebrates the rising

of the Te Kāhui o Matariki star cluster and is guided by three key principles: remembrance – honouring those who have passed; celebration – giving thanks for the present; and looking to the future –embracing renewal and hope.

The event celebrates te ao Māori and features kapa haka, hangi, free activities for tamariki and rangatahi, storytelling of local Māori history and legends (purakau) by kaumātua Darren Rewi, bubble show, bonfires and fire dancers.

Road Closure: Please note that the Dinosaur Park carpark will be closed for the event from 12.00pm on Friday, 10 July. Accessible parking will still be available and can be accessed via the car park entrance.

Volunteers wanted for OUT&about Wānaka

OUT&about Wānaka is entering a new chapter in 2026, with its full Pride Week and Pride Street Party now moving to a biennial format. The larger celebrations will return in 2027, while this year will feature a smaller programme of events across Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September.

With preparations underway, organisers are now calling for volunteers to help bring the weekend

to life. Whether you can spare a few hours or the whole weekend, there are roles to suit everyone, including ticketing, bar service, decorating, photography, customer service, site support and pack down. No previous experience is needed.

This year's programme includes Drag Bingo, a relaxed Community Get Together and Pride After Dark, creating opportunities for the community to come together and celebrate.

Festival Director Oliver Harcus said volunteers are at the heart of every OUT&about Wānaka event.

"Every person who gives their time helps create a welcoming, inclusive experience for our community. Whether you've volunteered before or are keen to get involved for the first time, we'd love to have you on the team."

Anyone interested in volunteering can find out more and register at: outandaboutwanaka.co.nz/volunteer

Giving our native wildlife a fighting chance

From Wānaka to East Africa

An organisation transforming thousands of lives across East Africa has deep roots right here in Wanaka — and some impressive Kiwi names behind it.

Predator Free Wānaka is a volunteer-led organisation which has set up 1,100 plus traps along more than 30 trap lines around Wānaka, Hāwea, Hāwea Flat, Albert Town, Luggate, and the Cardrona River.

There are two new trap lines being set up along the banks of the Cardrona River by Predator Free Wānaka.

We are driven by wanting to see more karearea, tūī, korimako (bellbird), kererū, geckos and other unique taonga thrive in the Upper Clutha.

Trapping reduces the number of introduced predators such as rats, stoats, hedgehogs, ferrets, mice and possums, so our native wildlife has a fighting chance.

We are looking for more volunteers who may be able to help with the new trap lines. If you love the great outdoors, want to protect our native wildlife, and think you can spare some time, please contact megan@predatorfreewanaka.org.

Founded in 2009 by Wanaka local Cassandra Treadwell, So They Can has spent over 15 years working alongside communities in East Africa to create lasting, meaningful change. More than 55,000 children living in extreme poverty have gained access to quality education, while over 36,000 community members have benefited from life-saving healthcare, clean water, and economic opportunities.

The organisation's model is built on community-led development — the belief that sustainable change is only possible when driven by local leaders and supported by those who stand beside them.

With a Wanaka local at its heart, the organisation is a reminder that the people in our community are quietly doing extraordinary things on the world stage.

So They Can New Zealand is on a mission to raise $120,000 to build a dormitory to enable 100 girls to avoid female genital cutting and child marriage, receiving an education that will change their and their children's lives forever. If you are interested in supporting this project, please contact Cassandra: cassandra@sotheycan.org.

TWO GAS CYLINDERS were stolen from a local residential holiday property between 21 and 28 June.

POLICE URGE PEOPLE TO INSTALL CCTV and secure valuable items such as gas cylinders. Prevention measures are a deterrent for would be opportunists.

SHOPLIFTERS CONTINUE TO TARGET our retailers. Police will actively pursue all complaints of shoplifting. We ask people ‘if you see something, do something’. To reduce the incidence of this type of offending, you can help by getting a good description, including time, date and place, and advise a member of staff.

POLICE HAVE RECEIVED ONE REPORT this week of two dogs on the loose on a rural property. Each year, roaming dogs injure or kill livestock on rural properties in attacks that are often traumatic for both animals and their owners. Many of these incidents are preventable through responsible dog ownership. With a large number of lifestyle and rural properties across our area, it is essential that dog owners, particularly those in rural communities, ensure their dogs are securely contained and unable to roam. Even when not physically attacked, livestock can suffer significant stress from being chased or harassed by dogs, particularly during lambing season.

POLICE ENCOURAGE ALL DOG OWNERS to take responsibility for their pets. Responsible ownership means knowing where your dog is at all times and ensuring dogs are under effective control, whether on a leash in public, within a secure fenced area, or contained on your property. Owners of livestock on lifestyle blocks, including sheep, deer, cattle and horses, should remain vigilant for roaming dogs and regularly check on their animals. Police will follow up reports of this nature.

POLICE URGE PEOPLE TRAVELLING on our network frequently to get ready by signing up to the QLDC Winter Road Reports at qldc.govt.nz for daily updates on road conditions and chain requirements. Sign up and receive their 2026 road report from crews summarising conditions across the district.

UPDATED RULES REQUIRE DRIVERS to use snow chains in winter conditions on certain roads. From winter 2026, failing to fit chains when required can result in a $750 fine enforced by Police. Drivers are responsible for knowing how to properly fit chains and should check their vehicle manual or consult a mechanic if unsure.

It’s been a quieter month, and we’ve been to a lot of alarm activations. These are as exciting as they sound.

We’ve been fortunate so far, but the brigades on the other side of the hill have been to a couple of multi-vehicle crashes recently. Please take extra care when crossing bridge decks. There are lots of these around and they freeze before the surrounding roads (because cold air circulates above and below the structure). Even when the roads around appear clear, bridge decks can be unexpectedly slippery. Reduce speed before reaching a bridge, avoid sudden braking or steering, and increase following distances. Also, remember that ice is more likely on the road at sunrise than any other time of day, so watch out for that.

And a reminder that though your chimney should be swept at least once a year, it might need more regular cleaning if you burn regularly, use wet wood or you’re in a high wind area. If your chimney catches fire, close the fire’s door, get everyone outside and call 111.
