MY COMMUNITY NEWS Help us create the world’s most fabulous Labour Weekend Exhibition The countdown to the Wānaka Arts Labour Weekend Exhibition 2026 is officially on. Artist entries have now closed, with a fantastic response from artists. The exhibition is shaping up to be one of our most diverse and interesting showcases yet. This year’s event at the Lake Wānaka Centre will feature a vibrant mix of paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, photography, jewellery, and textiles from across New Zealand. It is a celebration of the creative community, featuring Hawke's Bay painter Joseph Rowntree as the 2026 Artist in Residence, alongside guest artists Michelle McIvor and Odelle Morshuis, and working artists Lee van der Geest, Sarah Freiburger, Gilly Sheffield and Tracy Rountree.

We’ve said before how vital our volunteers are, and it’s worth saying again – we simply couldn’t do it without you. Even if you don’t have an artistic bone in your body, there are plenty of ways to help. Setting up the exhibition is a massive undertaking, and we couldn’t do it without the support of our community. It's a really rewarding feeling to see the exhibition come together. If you have some time up your sleeve this Labour Weekend, email Shelley at artsco.wanaka.arts@gmail.com. No ongoing commitment required – it’s just a fun day helping to create the world’s most fabulous Labour Weekend Exhibition. Submitted by Wānaka Arts

Upper Clutha Tramping Club welcomes Southern Alps adventurer The Upper Clutha Tramping Club’s guest speaker on Wednesday, 14 October will be documentary maker and podcaster Paul Roy, who has travelled to more than 50 countries in his work over the last 45 years. The journey that had the most long-lasting effect on Roy was a three-month traverse of the Southern Alps in 1979, from Homer Tunnel to Nelson Lakes. With three companions, including Craig Potton (now a well-known environmentalist and photographer), they encountered an unusually wet summer, which forced long stays in huts, tents or bivies, while waiting out the weather and scuppered most of their plans to climb along the way. Carrying huge packs with climbing gear, tents, ropes, Primus and fuel for time above the snowline, food was always short and the distances between food drops – some of which were carried in beforehand – were long. At several times, completing the trip was in doubt. Paul will give an illustrated talk about a time before PLBs, GPS or instant communications, when

any serious accident meant someone tramping out from remote locations for help. Forty-seven years after that trip, Paul will reflect on the trip itself and the changes in the mountains he has seen since. He is still an active tramper, if somewhat slower and more cautious. All are welcome to attend the talk, held at 7.30pm at the Wānaka Volunteer Firestation.

Baby loss and memorial gathering

You are warmly invited to join us for a gathering to remember and honour all babies gone too soon. We remember the babies born sleeping; those carried for the shortest or longest time but never held in our arms; those who were held but could not be taken home; and those who came home but could not stay. On Thursday, 15 October, during Baby Loss Awareness Week, we will join the International Wave of Light, lighting candles at 7.00pm local

time in memory of babies who have died. As candles are lit around the world, a continuous wave of light travels across the time zones, creating a beautiful global tribute.

The free run club will meet at Bremner Bay at 6.45am and run for approximately 30–40 minutes. It is open to all abilities, with different groups catering for different running paces.

Kāhu Youth is a well-established non-profit youth organisation in Wānaka, providing a safe space for young people to feel uplifted and connected to themselves, their community and their environment.

It is a time to remember, to grieve, to honour each precious life, and to acknowledge the love and tender bond that remains. Everyone is welcome.

The initiative is designed to provide an opportunity for young people to socialise, build connections and start the week with some movement and fresh air.

The run club is free, but participants must register in advance.

An experienced counsellor is hosting four free group sessions in Wānaka and Queenstown this month to celebrate World Mental Health Day. Local therapist Theresa Bruce is offering four separate Interactive Drawing Therapy (IDT) workshops for adults and children in the Queenstown Lakes region. The onehour sessions hosted by Cascade Counselling provide a space for people to connect and decompress, with trained counsellors facilitating the sessions. “It is a fantastic approach that is not about the drawing, but uses externalisation – a process allows someone to gently work through feelings without becoming overwhelmed, says Theresa. “The free sessions offer a fun, lighthearted space for adults and children to pause before heading into the busy end-of-year season,” she adds.

The trauma-informed counsellor has more than 15 years experience of working with parents and children. She began as a teacher aide supporting neurodiverse students, before training as a counsellor and opening her practice in 2019. “When it comes to supporting someone, my main principle is to meet them where they are at,” she explains. “Often people, especially children, struggle to find the words to express how they feel and as a counsellor, I consider it my responsibility to have a strong, wide skillset that is adaptable to the needs of my clients.” The one-hour sessions will be hosted at Wānaka Community Hub, (details below). Spaces are limited to 10 people per session, with bookings via the Cascade Counselling website. Submitted by Cassandra Smillie

NEW ZEALAND POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY 2026 was observed on Tuesday, 29 September, with Otago Lakes staff coming together to honour colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities While the national service was held at the Royal New Zealand Police College, local staff and members of the Police family gathered at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Queenstown to mark the occasion and pay their respects. Police Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the lives and service of New Zealand Police staff who have been killed by criminal acts while carrying out their duties, or who have died as a result of their service. It is also a time to remember serving, retired, and former Police staff who have passed away over the past year. In the lead-up to the day, Police staff wear the Huia Pin as a symbol of remembrance, honour, and respect for those who have served before us. The pin serves as a visible reminder of the enduring bond within the Police whānau and our commitment to never forgetting those who gave so much in the service of others.

POLICE CONTINUE TO RECEIVE REPORTS of online banking fraud / scams. If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent your bank, hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted phone number. Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to a scam should contact their bank immediately and report the matter to Police via 105. Information relating to scam activity can also be reported to Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz. ON THE EVENING of 21 September, Police were conducting an alcohol checkpoint on State Highway 84 when a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old female entered the checkpoint. While she passed a compulsory breath screening test, officers detected a strong smell of cannabis inside the vehicle. A subsequent search located a quantity of cannabis. POLICE HAVE RECEIVED REPORTS of three incidents involving damage to parked vehicles, with two occurring on Ardmore Street on 22 and 24 September and another on Helwick Street on 24 September. In all cases, the vehicles were allegedly damaged while parked and no details were left by the responsible driver. Police remind motorists that if they are involved in a collision that results in damage to a vehicle or property, they are required to stop and provide their details to the owner and notify Police through 105 as soon as practicable. Leaving a note with contact and driver details is often the simplest way to ensure the vehicle owner can make contact and arrange any necessary repairs. It is also the right thing to do. POLICE STOPPED a 27-year-old woman on Wanaka-Luggate Highway on 23 September. She returned a result of 301mcg/L of alcohol per litre of breath and was issued with an infringement notice. POLICE STOPPED A 39-YEAR-OLD MAN on Noema Terrace, Lake Hāwea On 24 September. He underwent breath testing procedures and returned a result of 300 mcg/L of alcohol per litre of breath. He was also issued with an infringement notice. ALSO ON 24 SEPTEMBER, Police located a male driver who had been seen turning away from a compulsory breath-testing checkpoint on Lakeside Road. The driver underwent evidential breath-testing procedures and returned a result of 329 mcg/L of alcohol per litre of breath. He was issued with an infringement notice. POLICE AND WĀNAKA LANDSAR were deployed to a missing person incident in the Luggate area late on Monday, 28 September. Residents may have noticed an increased Police presence while search efforts were underway, including the use of Drones. Following an extensive search, the missing person was located safely. Police would like to extend our sincere thanks to the volunteers from Wānaka LandSAR for their outstanding effort and commitment throughout the operation. Their support, expertise, and willingness to assist are invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for the contribution they make. NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (TEN-FIVE) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (TRIPLE-ONE).

September Update from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade September again saw a lot of alarm activations at commercial premises. We never assume these are false alarms, even with the repeat offenders, so expect a full response each time. We genuinely do not mind being called out to these, there’s no boy who cried wolf as far as we’re concerned. It is open fire season which means burn piles and land management fires are permitted in rural areas. If you see something that is out of control, do call 111. If it’s your fire, and passers-by may be able to see flames or smoke, it is recommended that you notify the fire through the checkitsalright.nz website. This will avoid unnecessary call outs. There’s been a few minor car crashes on our patch and one major on the Lindis that saw us called in for additional resources alongside Cromwell’s brigade. Our single rescue tender covers the area from Haast to our side of the Crown Range summit and out to Queensberry; that’s huge. When you consider the occasions when we’re also called to support neighbouring brigades, it highlights just how important it is for everyone to stay alert, drive defensively, and adjust their driving to the conditions. Finally, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have departed this month. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Circling in the skies above Wānaka, there’s still much to discover about the kārearea The kārearea, also known as the New Zealand falcon, is an iconic raptor that can occasionally be seen circling in the skies above Wānaka, even around Mt Iron as it uses the updrafts in its hunt for food. A free talk about the kārearea is being held at the Lake Wānaka Centre on Tuesday, 13 October, hosted by Graham Parker and Tom Reeves from the Kārearea Project. The project has been running for the last 8 years with the team monitoring nesting pairs across the Upper Clutha basin with the aim of estimating the breeding population size, quantifying nest survival rates and causes of nest failures, estimating adult survival rates and territory size, and identifying actions to ensure the falcon survives and thrives in this area.
