It seems it may be a shorter and cooler summer. Cat Rescue Wānaka is encouraging locals to get ahead of the colder months, while supporting a vital community cause, through its latest kindling pre-sale fundraiser. The volunteer-led rescue, which cares for abandoned and stray cats across the Upper Clutha, is offering pre-ordered boxes of ultra-dry kindling, delivered directly to customers’ homes once enough orders are received. At $20 per banana box, the fundraiser provides a practical way for households to prepare for winter fires before the real cold arrives in April. A thank-you message from Cat Rescue Wānaka is
placed on top, along with a small sprig of lavender – a thoughtful touch that has become a hallmark of the group’s fundraising efforts.

Funds raised go directly toward veterinary care, food, desexing and fostering support for cats and kittens in need throughout the region. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Celebrating creativity in The Upper Clutha Home Industry competitions are at the heart of the Wānaka A&P Show, showcasing the creativity, skill and community spirit that make the event so special. From baking and preserves to flowers, produce and craft, Home Industry brings together entrants of all ages - from preschoolers proudly presenting their first creations to seasoned competitors displaying their skills across all categories. Long-time Wānaka local and Home Industry committee member Sarah Godfrey says the section is one of the most inclusive parts of the Show. Living in Wānaka on and off since 2003, she has been attending the A&P Show for more than two decades and joined the Home Industry committee last year to give something back. “You really see the whole community represented,” she says. “It’s friendly, well run, and there’s a great team behind it.”

Every small step makes a big difference. They’d also love to hear from you! Take a few minutes to share your thoughts and help shape the future of these waterways. Each entry goes in the draw to win one of two summer prize packs, worth over $250, thanks to KEA Outdoors and Marine & Sport Wānaka.
The health of local lakes and rivers is in decline. But it’s not too late to do something about it. This summer, local not-for-profit WAI Wānaka, is inviting everyone to enjoy the lakes responsibly. Whether you’re a local, visitor or holiday homeowner, you can help protect these precious waterways, while celebrating all they have to offer. This Friday, 9 January from 12.00pm to 4.00pm,
the WAI team will be at the Hāwea boat ramp and swimming embayment (aka the lagoon) near The Camp, Lake Hāwea. Head on down to have a chat, share your stories, and get some tips for keeping local lakes and rivers healthy for generations to come. If you can’t make it on Friday, there’s plenty of other ways to get involved.

Looking ahead, the communal heart of the village will include a boutique clubhouse, cafe, bar and wellness facilities like an indoor heated swimming pool. An onsite aged residential care home is planned, delivering much-needed care to the region. “The ultimate goal is for residents to feel a sense of belonging both within the village and to the surrounding community. They will be close to the local shops, golf club and the amenities of Three Parks,
