Help to spread a little joy this Christmas
Now in its fifth year, ‘A Little Ray of Giving’ is a community initiative developed to bring a little something extra to those who need it at Christmas. In conjunction with Community Networks, Ray White Wanaka asks the Upper Clutha community to embrace the giving season and dig deep for those in our community that are in need of some extra cheer this festive season. To help, simply purchase and bring a wrapped gift to place under the Christmas tree at the Ray White
office on 1 Helwick Street between 1st and 15th December 2017. With the help of Community Networks, the presents will be distributed to the children and families in the Upper Clutha area the week prior to Christmas. #alittlerayofgiving has grown over the past couple of years and those families that need help at this time of year are grateful for the extra support from the community. It’s a really simple way to make a big difference to those that need a little extra cheer.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Oh yes it is... Wanaka goes Panto! This year, there’s one more way to put some fun in your Christmas in the Upper Clutha, with a three-night run of classic pantomime. Cindy and the Villanelles is a ‘panto’ based on the story of Cinderella, but with local and topical twists. If you haven’t encountered panto in the theatre before, you’ll love it. It’s family fun with cheesy jokes, audience interaction and the fabulous stepsisters, of course. The local all-star cast includes recent school
leaver Ella Moore as Cindy and Kim Nichol, Gabriel Schwarz and Merle Schlüter as the Villanelles, assistants to the villainous property developer played by Richard Elvey. Rich is also producing the play, which is being directed by Gilly Pugh from a script by Liz Breslin. “Shout out to QLDC and CCS and the UCCAC and Mitre 10 and Radio Wanaka and all the cast and the crew working hard. It’s all making it possible for us to bring laughs and Christmas cheer to the Lake Wanaka Centre.” says Rich.
Cindy and the Villanelles runs from the 21st-23rd December at 7pm, with a 2pm matinee on the 23rd. Tickets, at $19 for adults and $9 children, are available from Eventfinda. Door sales (if any) will be available on the day at $20/$10. The Facebook page for the event is Wanaka Pantomimers, which will keep you updated with who’s playing who in the cast and general pantomime goings on. Oh no it won’t! Oh yes it will!
The future of Eely Point Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is seeking public feedback on a draft report outlining future development options for Eely Point recreational reserve. There will be a drop-in session from 4.00-6.00pm next Tuesday (12 December) at the Scout Den as well as information displays in Wanaka Library and the council’s Ardmore Street offices. The draft report is posted on QLDC’s website

A very special evening At this time of year when Christmas festivities are all around us it can be very difficult for families who know that their child or children will be absent, so a special evening is planned for bereaved parents and their families to give them an opportunity to express their feelings and to acknowledge the absences in a beautiful, meaningful way. Lighting a candle is a traditional way to show respect and love for those who have died, a way to contribute to the hope that the memory will endure. Central Otago Compassionate Friends will be hosting a Candlelight Evening so that families may gather to light candles for their children who have died, to show that they will always be loved and never forgotten. This year
the gathering will be Monday 11 December, in Alexandra. As well as a candle to light, parents are invited to bring items for inclusion in the programme; suitable items such as poetry, verses, readings or appropriate songs. A Memory Table will be set up for candles and photos or mementoes of the children who have died. In addition, those present will be invited to write a small message to place in a helium filled balloon which will be released along with others at the end of the evening.
