Queenstown Lakes Libraries is excited to launch LitFest 2026 - a district-wide festival of literacy running throughout May and June. Now in its second year, the programme features a range of free events from workshops to author talks and Rainbow Storytimes. The festival celebrates literacy in its broadest sense; reading, writing, storytelling, language, and shared ideas while showcasing local libraries as vibrant, welcoming spaces for learning and community. This year’s programme has expanded to include more workshops, a stronger focus on wellbeing and practical life skills, and events designed to support diverse learning needs.
Upper Clutha highlights include the return of popular writing workshop facilitator Stephanie Fieldsend, with a new a three part series. An Understanding Dyslexia parent information session with Chris Cole on 21 May, and a Community Singing workshop with Anna Van Riel on 5 June.
QLDC libraries hope attendees leave feeling inspired, confident and connected having discovered new skills, creative interests, or a renewed connection with their local library. All LitFest events are free, though some workshops require registration due to limited space. Free pancakes for Mum this Mother’s Day
Join us for a fun and relaxed Mother’s Day morning on Sunday, 10 May, hosted by Hāwea Presbyterian Church, as we serve up free pancakes for the community at the Lake Hāwea Longview Playground Park from 10.30am onwards.
This is our way of celebrating the amazing mums in our community. Bring Mum, bring the family, and enjoy a laid-back morning together in the park while the kids play and everyone enjoys a pancake (or three!).
Instead of holding our regular 10.00am service at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre (following our recent move from St Ninian’s in Hāwea Flat), we’re doing things differently this week and gathering outside in the park. Everyone is welcome to come along and be part of it.
If wet, the event will be held in the Lake Hāwea Community Centre from 10.30am.

Living with cancer, whether you’re newly diagnosed, in treatment, in remission, or supporting someone you love, can feel overwhelming. No one should have to navigate that journey alone. Our Cancer Walking & Support Group offers a gentle, welcoming space where you can connect with others who truly understand. We meet fortnightly for a relaxed, accessible walk designed for all fitness levels. These walks aren’t about speed or distance; they’re about companionship, fresh air, and taking time for yourself. Along the way, you’ll find conversation, encouragement, and the comfort of being surrounded by people who 'get it.'
The walk is there for you to share experiences, ask questions, or just simply listen. There’s no pressure to talk, just an open, compassionate environment where everyone is respected and supported. Each walk is followed by an optional stop at Edgewater for a hot drink before we make our way back to the lakefront.

Upper Clutha residents are being invited to rediscover the incredible experiences on their doorstep, with Locals’ May launching this week. The campaign is now live, with more than 100 offers available across Wānaka and Queenstown, including activities and attractions, hospitality, wellness and retail experiences.
Locals’ May is designed to give residents the chance to enjoy the places and experiences that make the region special, for a discount, while supporting local businesses through the shoulder season.
Wānaka deals include 40% off the Hāwea to Wānaka ebike hire and shuttle, 15% off sessions at The Sauna Wānaka, 20% off Cardrona Quad Biking Tour’s The Mountain Experience, and 15% off donuts at Sweet Spot NZ.

A community conversation on eating disorders
Local health advocacy group Health Action Wānaka (HAW) is taking action in response to growing concern about a rise in eating disorders in the Upper Clutha.
HAW Chair Monique Mayze says its 2024 community health needs research, Perception versus Reality: The True State of Healthcare in the Upper Clutha, highlighted the experiences of people struggling to access support for loved ones with eating disorders.
“Since the report’s release, we’ve continued to hear from people living with eating disorders, as well as parents and whānau supporting loved ones, about the barriers they face in accessing appropriate services.
“When local parent advocate Pip Miller approached us about this issue, we saw an opportunity to bring the community together for an open and informed conversation.”
With funding from REAP and Path Wānaka, the group is hosting a free community event focused on early identification, challenging common misconceptions, and outlining support services.

It will also explore the potential for establishing a local support group.
Speakers include Eating Disorders Carer Support chair Sarah Rowland and clinical nurse consultant Hayley Guinness, alongside a panel of local health and education professionals.

Wānaka’s school communities are coming together for a lively night of music, dance and fundraising, with the inaugural WPS x MAC Ceilidh Night on Saturday, 6 June. Organised by the Wānaka Primary School PTA and Mount Aspiring College’s Friends of MAC, the adults-only event promises an energetic evening of Scottish tradition with a modern twist.
Guests can expect live music from renowned band Hair of the Dog, alongside guided ceilidh dancing – no experience required. With a professional caller leading the dances, even first-timers will quickly find themselves swept up in the fun.
The $75 ticket includes a significant supper, whisky tasting and continuous entertainment, including a highland dance demonstration, raffle, silent auction and more. Attendees are

CRIME LINE
AROUND MIDNIGHT ON 3 May, Police were called to Northlake subdivision. A local resident could hear a large piece of machinery from the construction zone start up and noises indicating that someone was trying to move it. They also reporting seeing lights and two people in the area. Police attended and found a large loader / compactor with its engine on. If you see or hear or see anything suspicious, please call Police. Anyone with information can call, quoting number 260503/1503.
A 30-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Muir Road, Lake Hāwea at 11.55pm on Sunday, 26 April 2026. She underwent evidential breath alcohol procedures, producing a result of 461mcg/L. She has a date in Queenstown District Court on 18 May.
A 31-YEAR-OLD MALE was stopped on Lake Hāwea-Albert Town Road at 10.50pm on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. The driver underwent EBA procedures. The driver denied having consumed any alcohol but having failed a passive breath test, admitted to having consumed alcohol. Evidential breath alcohol procedures were carried out roadside, returning a result of 400mcg/L.
A 68-YEAR-OLD FEMALE was stopped on Gladstone Road, John Creek on 29 April and underwent EBA procedures. She failed a passive screening test, was unable to complete a breath screening test. She underwent blood tests.
ON 29 APRIL Police were called to a MVA on State Highway 84 Wānaka, between Morris Road and Ballantyne Road intersections. Early indications suggest that the truck pulled out onto the highway, failing to give way to a campervan travelling in the same direction. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. The truck driver was conscious but sustained a head injury and suspected concussion. He was transported to Dunstan Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the campervan and passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to Queenstown Hospital.
AT 9.30PM ON 30 APRIL, a vehicle driving north on Makarora-Hāwea Road, in a 100km zone, hit a deer. This is the second report of deer v vehicle in recent weeks in that area. Nil injuries. Please be careful and keep an eye out for deer moving about early morning and night.
A STEADY NUMBER of driving complaints including vehicles crossing the centre line, unsafe passing manoeuvres and inconsiderate driving.
On 1 May, a member of the public reported all of the above in one incident. A vehicle traveling slowly in a 100kph area was overtaken, during the manoeuvre, the slower vehicle veered across the centre line by over 1metre, causing the overtaking vehicle to move out wider than necessary. The offending driver was located.
POLICE WERE CALLED to a MVA on Anderson Road on 2 May. As the driver approached the roundabout on Wanaka-Luggate Highway, they failed to give way and collided with another vehicle. Nil injuries.
AN 18-YEAR-OLD MALE was stopped on Hedditch Street, Wānaka on 3 May and underwent EBA procedures. The (restricted) driver returned a reading of 250mcg. He will be appearing in Queenstown District Court on 22 May.
WITH COOLER TEMPS and frosty windows, Police urge drivers take time to ensure that windscreens and windows are clear of ice. Be mindful of fog and ice around bridges that cross waterways.
ON SATURDAY, 2 MAY Police were notified of a party that got themselves into trouble kayaking on the Clutha River near the Red Bridge. Having capsized, they required rescue by a jet boat.

Community Link Cold Kids Campaign Launches as Winter Pressures Hit Local
Families
Recently a local family came through the doors at Community Link feeling completely overwhelmed. Both parents were working, the kids at school, and on the surface everything seemed fine. Then unexpectedly the car needed urgent service work.
The repair bill was unavoidable. The car was essential for work, but paying for it meant the power bill went unpaid and the heater stayed off. Groceries were stretched. By the time they reached out, the house was freezing and everyone was suffering.
Similarly, Sarah (name changed) found herself choosing between heating her home and putting food on the table. As a single mum who was working hard to make ends meet, she was doing everything she could but the bills kept coming and something had to give. Most nights, when the weather was cold, it was the heat pump.
“I’d tuck the kids into bed with extra blankets and hope they were warm enough,” she said. “You feel like you’re letting them down.”
Through Community Link’s Cold Kids Campaign, Sarah was able to access support that made an immediate difference helping with power bills, practical advice, and reassurance that she wasn’t alone.
