ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP PIANISTS TO PERFORM IN WANAKA
Internationally celebrated pianist Jian Liu, who has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, will bring his extraordinary talent to the Lake Wānaka Centre for one night only on Monday, 8 June at 7.30pm.
Jan Liu’s programme surveys the different ways composers of New Zealand and Chinese heritage paint their worlds in sound.
The journey begins with landscapes featuring Douglas Lilburn’s From the Port Hills and Huang Hu Wei’s evocative Pictures from Bashu, while Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolour and Salina Fisher’s Three Short Pieces capture nature’s fleeting beauty in shimmering sound.
Gareth Farr’s Love Songs and Zhang Zhao’s Three Songs from the Mountains of Southern Yunnan give voice to love and longing.
The second half turns to childhood and memory. Gillian Whitehead’s Lullaby for Matthew and He Luting’s Lullaby offer tender moments of repose, while Anthony Ritchie’s Caroline Bay Suite and Ding Shande’s Children’s Suite Dance with the laughter of children at play before Sonatinas by David Farquhar and Wang Lisan bring the programme to a spirited close, brimming with energy and joy.

Death Café and DIY funeral presentation

We are delighted to be hosting two free community events on Wednesday, 10 June, courtesy of Rippon Vineyard.
Please join us from 1.00–2.30pm for The Death Café - a facilitated group discussion where people can openly talk about any and every topic related to death and dying in a safe, respectful and welcoming environment. Death Café is part of a global social movement that aims to increase awareness of death and encourage conversations that help people make the most of their lives. Hot drinks and baked treats will be provided.
Following this, from 2.30 - 4.00pm, Liz and Su will present an informative and practical session exploring traditional home death care and more affordable, personal DIY funeral options. This presentation will include caring for a loved one at home after death, understanding your choices, reducing funeral costs, and creating meaningful, family-led farewells that reflect the wishes and values of the person who has died. Everyone is warmly welcome to attend either or both events.

Sense of belonging with Aspiring Rotary
"My husband and I moved to Wānaka almost three years ago, bringing not only our belongings but also our entire business. We didn’t know anyone here, which in itself can be a scary thought. Within a month or so of moving, I was invited to a meeting for Aspiring Rotary and decided to join. I had never been part of a volunteer group before, and Rotary had never been on my 'radar', so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the very
first meeting, I felt a warm welcome, a sense of belonging, and gained insight into the incredible community that makes up Wānaka.
Aspiring Rotary makes meetings more accessible by only having 2 meetings a month for one hour. A key focus of the club is supporting the local community through hands-on involvement.
This includes catering at events, running bars at functions, and organising fundraising initiatives
for groups such as Mental Hunts. The club also proudly donates annually to the No Child Misses Out fund, alongside supporting many other local charities, community events, and grassroots initiatives throughout the Upper Clutha.
Our group is made up of business owners, workers, retirees, mums, dads, and grandparents, all united by a common purpose: giving our time and expertise to support the community.

Our longstanding Wanaka Travel Club is welcoming people who would like to hear about the travel adventures of others with an accompanying slideshow.
Our recent speakers have shared with us experiences to the Antarctic, South America, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea and more.
Once a month we gather at the Hāwea Hotel at 11.00am on the third Wednesday of the month. After the speaker, we enjoy conviviality and a two-course lunch which is often themed with the speaker's subject.
In October, we go on a Mystery Bus Trip – a day trip to somewhere interesting, complete with a special meal.
Each meeting is advertised in The Messenger's Community Diary and each member is contacted with all the details.
For those of you who are new to the area, this is a good way to meet people as part of a small, friendly group, to hear about travelling abroad and in some cases living experiences around the world.

Support for people living with Dementia
Every Wednesday from 10.00am – 1.00pm we have a small social group gathering for people with dementia. The key focus is for everyone to have some fun. We have various activities that occur and lots of stimulating conversations keeping the brain active. The sessions are all held in the comfort of a home environment. The group is
small and intimate giving it a nice cosy feeling. We currently have two spaces free.
On a Tuesday, Kate runs a program for people with younger onset dementia, who were diagnosed under 65 years old. This is an active group and they go on various trips out and about. Currently this programme is full, but if you would like to go on the waiting list, please feel free to contact.

Pop-up foodbank to begin in Hāwea
Community Link is bringing foodbank support closer to home for Lake Hāwea and Makarora residents, with a new pop-up service launching this week at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre.
Running every Wednesday from 12.00 - 2.00pm throughout winter. The pop-up aims to make it easier for local whānau to access food support without needing to travel into Wānaka.
As winter sets in and cost-of-living pressures increase, having practical support available locally can make a real difference for families. The initiative is designed to remove barriers and ensure people can access support easily.
Food parcels are pre-ordered, allowing the Community Link team to prepare supplies in advance. The collection time has been chosen to suit families, when children are at school and it is easier to visit the community centre.
Anyone needing support is encouraged to get in touch by emailing foodbank@communitylink.nz to arrange a parcel and learn more about how the service works.
The pop-up is made possible thanks to the support of the Lake Hāwea Community Centre, and Dunlop Builders, who are providing transport to Hāwea, reflecting a strong community effort to care for one another over the colder months.
By bringing services closer to where people live, Community Link hopes to ensure more families can access the support they need this winter.

Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust is excited to announce a new community planting site at Peninsula Bay, creating another important step in restoring native biodiversity in our region. The site will be home to thousands of locally sourced native plants over the next 3-4 years, helping to improve habitat for birds and insects, and strengthen the health of the local ecosystem. The project has been made possible through strong collaboration with QLDC, local residents, the Upper Clutha Wilding Tree group, Upper Clutha Tracks Trust and Bike Wānaka. Over the next years, we will work together to re-plant, mulch, and care for the young native plants until they become a forest.
This new planting area will also provide opportunities for hands-on environmental education, allowing local tamariki and community groups to learn about native ecosystems in a meaningful and practical way.
Community members are warmly invited to get involved in the first planting day happening on Saturday, 13 June from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. The site is located at the end of Penrith Park Drive.

Our Sky Tower Challenge team delivered some fantastic results at the May event. Thanks to the incredible backing from our community, sponsors, friends and family, the Wānaka crew raised $14,735 for Blood Cancer NZ, securing 3rd place in the 2–5 person team fundraising category. They also turned in some outstanding performances on the day, taking on all 1,103 stairs in full kit. Luke led the charge, smashing expectations with an impressive 11:32 finish. He placed 4th out of 322 in the Male Open 16–39 Donned and Started category, and 12th overall. Ethan followed with 16:12, Alex clocked 16:21, and Myah finished at 19:07.
Lake Hāwea took a team of ten, making for some great rivalry. They also posted some great times….. not as great as Luke’s though! Thanks to all out there that supported them for their $7,524 fundraising total.
