The Hawea Christmas Wonderland opens Wednesday, 3 December with a new display for 2025: Dreams of Christmas.

Visitors will step into a festive realm where children’s dreams are intertwined with the joy and wonder of Christmas. With playful surprises around every corner, there’s plenty of Christmas magic to discover for visitors of all ages.

Organised by head elves Barbara Mackenzie and Elizabeth Horrell, this is the seventh year the Wonderland has delighted the community. Due to popular demand, the Wonderland season has been extended to 12 days, running from Wednesday, 3 December to Sunday, 14 December, giving visitors even more chances to enjoy the magic.

Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, the

Opening hours: Weekdays 2.00pm to 5.00pm, Weekends 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Join our Community Workshop team and make a difference!

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9.00am to 12.00pm, volunteers come together to create practical projects for community groups and schools across the Upper Clutha.

We build and repair all sorts of useful things – from play equipment and raised gardens to display stands, traps, and theatre props. Using donated and recycled materials, our team works shoulder to shoulder, applying skills, creativity, and care to every project.

It’s about sharing knowledge, learning from each other, and enjoying good company – with a cuppa and a few world problems solved along the way.

Volunteering at the Wānaka Community Workshop is a great way to give back to the community, connect with others, and get out of the house. Everyone is welcome – all you need is a willingness to get involved.

Growing food security one vegetable at a time

The Upper Clutha Food Security Network presents Pumpkin Power. This project aims to encourage the community to grow this resilient and nutritious vegetable either for their own use or to share with neighbours and friends.

Diana Manson from the Hāwea Food Forest said pumpkins were chosen as they are relatively easy to grow, keep well and are versatile. In past years, pumpkins have been an important element to help supply our community with nourishing food over the winter.

The Food Forest has planted over 50 plants this season and hopes to harvest over 200 pumpkins. Grow Wānaka will be participating in the project and no doubt there will be some friendly rivalry between the two community gardens at weigh-in.

A wide variety of pumpkins are being grown from tiny Small Sugars to enormous Atlantic Giants. Join us at the Pumpkin Festival on 2 May 2026, where everyone is invited to bring their pumpkins to enter competitions and enjoy pumpkin-related activities.

You’ll find helpful hints for growing and harvesting a prize-winning pumpkin. For example, once a few pumpkins are on a vine, pinch off the growing tip to direct energy into the fruit.

This summer, local not-for-profit WAI Wānaka is inviting everyone to enjoy the lakes responsibly. Whether you’re a local, visitor or holiday homeowner, you can help protect these precious waterways, while celebrating all they have to offer. Keep an eye out for the WAI team at beaches and boat ramps over the coming months. They’ll be out and about sharing tips, hearing your stories and inspiring action to keep local lakes and rivers healthy for generations to come.

To make it easy, WAI Wānaka has created a practical toolkit with simple ideas – like choosing ecofriendly products, checking your boat for aquatic pests, and learning about local services.

Stay Safe from Scams: A free talk for seniors

Senior Net Wānaka's next talk is presented by Gareth Campbell, who describes himself as a Fraud Fighter on LinkedIn. He is Vice President of BioCatch, which provides fraud prevention solutions to many banking and financial institutions around the world. Join Gareth for an informative and practical session on how to protect yourself from scams and fraud. Learn about the latest tactics used by scammers in New Zealand – including fake emails, phone calls, and online tricks – and how to spot the warning signs. We’ll also cover simple ways to stay safe online, how to make secure payments, and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.

This talk is especially tailored for seniors, with easyto-understand advice and time for questions. This is our final session for 2025, and there might just be a hint of Christmas at the meeting! Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends and stay one step ahead of the scammers!
