ROTARY CLUB OF WĀNAKA BOOK AND JIGSAW SALE RETURNS

Thousands of books and plenty of jigsaws will be on sale.

The annual Rotary Club of Wānaka Book and Jigsaw Sale, which will feature thousands of second hand books, will take place this weekend for three days, from Friday, 31 July to Sunday, 2 August.

The book sale has for years attracted hundreds of people to the Lake Wānaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price.

Rotary Club of Wānaka president Geoff McLeay said the public response to donating books and jigsaws over the past few weeks had been wonderful.

“We have had thousands of books and a lot of jigsaws dropped off at Mitre 10 MEGA,” Geoff said. “The Rotary team are busy sorting them and preparing for the sale.”

The books have been categorised to make browsing easy. Children’s books are just $1, while novels and general interest books are priced from $3. Some newer books and special interest books are a little more expensive.

“It’s a big job to categorise and price but well worth it when we see the response and the funds we can raise for the community,” Geoff said.

All funds raised will go to help the Rotary Club of Wānaka support worthwhile projects and causes. The book sale will take place at the Lake Wānaka Centre from Friday, 31 July to Sunday, 2 August. Opening hours are 10.00am - 4.30pm each day.

Join the Upper Clutha Tramping Club's August club night

Everyone, members and non-members alike, are welcome to join us for this informative presentation with the Upper Clutha Tramping Club.

For our August club night, David Norton's presentation will focus on some recent multiday trips he and his partner have undertaken into the knot of mountains between the Haast River, Waiatoto River and the main divide. This is a relatively quiet corner of Mt Aspiring National Park that doesn’t get visited much compared to other parts of the park. David will also talk about the impacts that deer are having on forests in this area, and more widely, based on a recent scientific paper he has published titled 'Deer in the headlights - sleepwalking our way to a native forest catastrophe'.

Afterwards there will be a chance for members and non members to catch up over a cup of tea.

In addition to our club nights, we promote safety in the outdoors by providing members and the general public access to training courses in trip leadership, river crossing, outdoor first aid and navigation skills. We also support the Te Kakano Trust with donations from our Green fund and assist with member planting days, the next one of which is coming up on Wednesday, 19 August at Diamond Lake. Wanaka parents encouraged to 'postpone the phone'

A group of Wānaka parents has banded together in support of the Smartphone Free Childhood NZ (SFCNZ) movement. Smartphone Free Childhood NZ promotes delaying smartphone ownership until a child is older.

The Wānaka group is encouraging more local parents to join the initiative, to bring about change at a grassroots level.

There is growing evidence that the shift from a playful, outdoor childhood to one where screens play a major role has negatively affected children's social and neurological development. They're being exposed to content they're too young to handle and the amount of bullying, predatory behaviour and problems around selfesteem and inattention are constantly rising.

Wanaka SFCNZ is asking local parents to support the movement by joining the Parent Pact: smartphonefreechildhood.co.nz/ parentpact, an anonymous, nonbinding agreement to delay giving your child a smartphone.

Thousands of New Zealand parents have joined the pact, in a nationwideeffort to change what has become the new normal for many Kiwi kids, of owning a smartphone and communicating via messaging apps and social media, instead of talking and face-to-face connection.

Please also join the 'Wanaka SFCNZ - Postpone the Phone' Facebook page, to keep up-to-date with local information and events.

We'd love to hear it!

Help shape Wānaka’s biggest month of wellbeing

Last year started with a simple question from Keity at Soul Yoga and Community Link: what if we created a month of activities to support mental wellbeing in our community?

The response was incredible.

Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month, more than 40 individuals and organisations came together to create nearly 60 experiences for locals. The programme was built around connection, learning and wellbeing, offering practical workshops, outdoor experiences, creative activities and opportunities for meaningful conversation. Participants learned new skills, discovered ways to manage stress and anxiety, connected with like-minded people, spent time in nature, and found space to slow down and reflect in the middle of busy lives. Attendees spoke about feeling calmer, more confident, more connected and better equipped to navigate life’s challenges.

So, we’re doing it again.

Community Link and Soul Yoga are now inviting local people, groups and organisations to help shape Mental Health Awareness Month this October. We’re looking for speakers, guides, adventurers, artists, makers, wellbeing practitioners, community groups, chefs and others whose work, life experience or personal journey has inspired a passion for mental wellbeing.

The kaupapa is simple: events must be free, open to the public, and focused on giving back to the community.

If you’d like to be involved, we’d love to hear from you. Contact Kenzie at connect@communitylink.nz and help create another month of connection, learning and wellbeing for Wānaka.

New menswear destination opens in Wānaka

Wānaka’s fashion scene has welcomed a new addition with the opening of DEVāL Menswear on Helwick Street.

Created as the brother store to the long-established DEVāL Boutique, DEVāL Menswear offers a carefully selected range of premium men’s clothing, footwear and accessories. The collection brings together globally recognised designers with quality fabrics and everyday wearability, balancing timeless style with individuality and modern New Zealand living.

The store is the vision of owners Sidney and Darcy, who spent the past two years watching the growth of Central Otago and the Southern Lakes region and recognising a gap in the market for premium menswear. Passionate about bringing worldrenowned brands closer to home, the young couple wanted to create an elevated retail experience while giving local men access to labels they would otherwise need to travel to find.

The store has been designed as a relaxed shopping space where customers can take their time browsing.

Visitors are invited to enjoy a complimentary beer while exploring the collection, with friendly styling advice available whenever it’s needed.

DEVāL Menswear stocks leading international brands including American Vintage, AG, Nudie Jeans Co., Citizens of Humanity, Diesel, Rag & Bone, Philippe Model, Vince and Sunspel.

Whether you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, invest in quality wardrobe staples or find something for a special occasion, DEVāL Menswear offers a curated selection of premium menswear in the heart of Wānaka.

Browse their range at devalmenswear.co.nz or pop in store.

A home that works as hard as you

Offering space, flexibility and multiple living options, this well-configured property combines a spacious four-bedroom family home with a fully self-contained one-bedroom unit and a detached studio, creating a lifestyle opportunity that's increasingly difficult to find. The heart of the home is the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, where large skylights fill the space with natural light. Multiple bi-fold doors open onto generous decking and established lawns, creating an inviting setting for entertaining, watching the kids play safely or simply enjoying the outdoors. bayleys.co.nz/228388
