FARMERS GEAR

Upper Clutha farmers will gather on Friday, 8 May for the Wānaka A&P Foundation Winter Crop Competition Awards Dinner, celebrating farming excellence while raising funds for key community services.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Wānaka and supported by the Wānaka A&P Foundation, the event recognises top-performing winter feed crops and highlights the district’s rural sector.

“There are some great winter feed crops being grown in the district in preparation for winter feeding,” organising committee chair Deans Hudson said.

Local businesses, farmers, and supporters have been generous in contributing prizes for the award night’s fundraising auction.

Funds will go toward upgrading night vision goggles

for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, purchasing a nerve pain barrier machine for Dunstan Hospital, and providing literacy and numeracy packs for Upper Clutha children starting school.

“These community services are essential for our remote region, and every bit of support makes a difference,” Deans said.

Upper Clutha A&P Society chair Keith Cooper said the event reflected the spirit of the society and the Wānaka A&P Show, “celebrating rural life, bringing people together and supporting our community”.

The evening begins at 5.30pm at the Upper Clutha Rugby Clubrooms, with former farmers Tony and Alison Cleland, now of Carrick Vineyard, appearing as guest speakers.

Sew much to share at Aspiring Quilters’ Friendship Day

The Aspiring Quilters Club will open its doors to the community this Saturday, 2 May, for a special Friendship Day event celebrating creativity, connection, and craftsmanship.

Held at the Wānaka Community Hub auditorium, the gathering begins at 9.30am and runs through to 4.00pm, welcoming visitors to drop in for an hour or two, or stay for the day. Guests can enjoy a complimentary morning tea, meet the club’s friendly members, and learn more about the art of quilting.

A highlight of the day will be the display of impressive quilting projects created by the club’s talented members. Quilts have been made with care for charitable causes, including six 'Operation Wrapped in Remembrance' quilts, thoughtfully crafted and donated to veterans of recent wars, peacekeeping missions, and overseas

deployments as a gesture of gratitude and support.

The club also continues its ongoing commitment to the community through its charity cot quilt programme, having donated more than 60 quilts last year alone to newborn babies in the Upper Clutha, with more currently in production.

The event will also host fellow quilting enthusiasts from Cromwell and Alexandra, along with visiting quilters from Perth, making it a vibrant and social occasion.

Sales tables featuring fabrics, quilting supplies, and sewing notions will provide inspiration for beginners and experienced quilters alike.

Attendees are encouraged to bring along a handcraft project, enjoy conversation, and share in a warm celebration of friendship and creativity.

Regional Choir leads a musical adventure

Prepare your passport for a musical adventure as the Central Otago Regional Choir presents its upcoming concert series 'A World of Song – from Sweden to Samoa'. Directed by Richard Madden and accompanied by Alison Frude on piano, the performance promises a whirlwind tour of the globe in the universal language of song.

The choir will deliver a programme of 12 songs in seven languages, including timeless favourites such as 'Londonderry Air,' 'Shenandoah' and 'Loch Lomond'; cultural treasures such as 'Furusato' and the moving 'Wairua Tapu', bookended by the high energy Negro spiritual 'Little David, Play on Yo’ Harp' and the infectious rhythms of the Samoan dance song, 'Minoi Minoi'.

Guest artists Natasha Manowitz (mezzo soprano) and Portia Bell (cello) are the first recipients of a new initiative by the choir to offer scholarships to University of Otago music students. Four students in each of the next three years will be offered a financial scholarship along with the opportunity to perform as the choir’s guests. Natasha, already accomplished in flute and violin and a wellqualified musician, has recently returned to study as a solo soprano, under Tessa Romano.

WHAT: Aspiring Quilters' Friendship Day. WHEN: Wednesday, 22 April. 9.30 - 4.00pm. WHERE: Wānaka Community Hub auditorium.

Talented young cellist Portia Bell is pursuing a Bachelor of Music, has earned multiple scholarships, and is an active performer with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. She is also Principal Cellist of the Dunedin Youth Orchestra. Both performers will be accompanied by pianist Cameron Monteath, who is bound to impress with the Kapustin Variations, Opus 41 – a high energy piece requiring magical dexterity.

WHAT: Central Otago Regional Choir Concert, 'A World of Song – from Sweden to Samoa.'

WHEN: Friday, 8 May.

WHERE: Lake Wānaka Centre.

INFO: Tickets $30 from Wanaka Paper Plus.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS

Community invited to come together for Pink Ribbon

Otago locals are being invited to gather with friends, family and colleagues this May to host or attend a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is the Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, which encourages people to connect over a shared meal to make a difference for New Zealand women affected by breast cancer. Around 240 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year across Otago and Southland. Hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a meaningful way to support them, helping fund groundbreaking research, free patient services and early detection education.

Ah-Leen Rayner, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, says the flexibility of Pink Ribbon Breakfast means anyone can get involved: “We know many households are feeling the pressures of rising living costs right now, but

hosting Pink Ribbon Breakfast doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. It can be as simple as a morning tea at home or work, or catch-up at your local cafe. What’s important is coming together, because every effort counts.

“As a charity that doesn’t receive any government funding, we desperately need more hosts to make sure our programmes can continue supporting the thousands of Kiwi women who rely on them. Every dollar raised makes a massive difference –by hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, you’re turning coffee and conversation into something powerful.”

Pink Ribbon Breakfast Day is 21 May, but events can be held any time throughout the month. Once registered, people will be sent a free host kit with ideas and resources to get them started.

For more information and to register to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, visit pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz. Registrations close on 31 May.

Survey to test demand for commuter shuttle

Community Link is exploring whether a weekday peak-time shuttle service could improve transport options between Lake Hāwea, Albert Town, and Wānaka.

As fuel prices add additional pressure on local families, we are keen to get community feedback through a short online survey.

The anonymous survey, which takes around five minutes to complete, aims to gauge demand for the service and gather information on preferred travel times, pick up and drop off locations, and what people consider a reasonable fare. The results will help determine whether a shuttle service is viable.

Initial thinking suggests the shuttle would operate during weekday morning and afternoon peak times, supporting travel to work, early appointments, and daily commitments. The service would likely use a shuttle van and include key pick up and drop off points across Lake Hāwea, Albert Town, and Wānaka. If there is sufficient interest, weekend services could also be considered.

The idea has emerged in response to community feedback highlighting rising transport costs and the lack of public transport options between these

areas. As fuel, parking, and living costs continue to increase, commuting is becoming more challenging for many households.

At this stage, the proposal is exploratory only, and no decisions have been made.

WHAT: Community Link week-day peak time shuttle survey

INFO: Scan the QR code to take the survey.
