The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival opens this Friday 29 June for six amazing days in Wanaka. The event includes talks, films, workshops and readings and showcases the top entries from the Adventure Filmmaking and Mountain Book competitions. Keynote speakers for 2018 will include inspirational and well-known American adventurer, Conrad Anker. Mark Sedon of Lake Hawea will talk on his recent 1,700km kite and climbing expedition to Antarctica. The programme includes adventure sports such as base jumping, mountaineering, climbing, ski, snowboarding, kayaking, surfing, mountain biking to foreign cultures, remote travel and environmental issues.

The recipient of the Hiddleston/MacQueen and the Best New Zealand Film Award goes to Wanaka local Jase Hancox for his film The Sky Piercer. The Sky Piercer follows a team, led by fellow Wanaka local Sam Smoothy, to climb and ski the East Face of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Accompanied by one of the world’s best snowboarders, Xavier de La Rue, professional freeskier Nadine Wallner and Wanaka local Fraser McDougall, Smoothy faces weather, ice and variable conditions as he sets out to achieve a life long goal. Don’t miss out! The festival is on in Wanaka from 29 June – 4 July, in Cromwell on 4 July and in Queenstown from 5–7 July. Tickets are on sale at mountainfilm.nz
