Wānaka’s next big musical set to make some noise this July
Following the overwhelming success of its inaugural production Blood Brothers, Onstage Wānaka is back with another bold and ambitious production. The hit New Zealand musical That Bloody Woman, is opening at the Lake Wānaka Centre this July.
Telling the story of suffrage icon Kate Sheppard in a modern, high-energy setting, That Bloody Woman is anything but a traditional history lesson. Packed with sharp humour, powerful music, bold characters and a rebellious spirit, the show celebrates the women who changed the course of New Zealand history, while delivering a theatrical experience that feels fresh, relevant and highly entertaining.
Rehearsals are well underway, with a talented local cast and a dedicated creative team bringing energy,
performances.
Following the sell-out success of Blood Brothers, demand is already building, and theatre-goers are being encouraged to secure tickets early.
Tickets are now on sale, with opening and closing nights already proving extremely popular and on track to sell out quickly! “This is one of those shows people will be talking about,” says Onstage Wānaka President Andrea Beryl. “If Blood Brothers taught us anything, it’s don’t wait too long to get tickets!”

The Upper Clutha History Society is holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the Lake Wānaka Centre Armstrong Room on Thursday, 28 May at 7.00pm.
This is a time to come together to review the past year and plan for the year ahead, including voting on our 2026-2027 Committee Members. Once formal proceedings have been completed, we invite everyone to stay for a cup of tea and a chat. All interested parties are welcome to join us.
The Upper Clutha History Society was established in 1985 to collect and preserve records and images of the history of the region and make them available to the public. In 2024 we established Wānaka History, including a website, social media accounts, and plaques installed at historical sites.
New members are welcome and encouraged to participate through the Wānaka History website. The website also allows individuals to register for the quarterly Upper Clutha History Society Newsletter – ‘Those Were the Days’.

Open Letter to Our Community: Winter Pressure Is Building
I am writing to you today with a genuine sense of urgency about the pressure many families in our community are facing as winter fast approaches.
Can you imagine waking up on a freezing morning, with the inversion layer sitting heavy, and getting the kids out of bed in a house with no heating, or asking them to do their homework in a room that hasn’t had any heating for days?
For some in our community, this is not hypothetical, it is what winter looks and feels like.
This year, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult, as rising living costs, fuel prices, and everyday expenses stretch household budgets further than ever before.
More families are feeling the strain, and when the added costs of firewood, electricity, and gas are factored in, especially as winter feels early and is shaping up to be particularly challenging for those trying to keep their homes warm.
What we are hearing every day is not just about finances, it is about stress, anxiety, and real uncertainty for what winter may hold. People are already juggling work, parenting, and caring for whānau, and the pressure is steadily building.
Many of the people reaching out are part of the fabric of our community, people working in classrooms, in healthcare, in retail, and in essential local services. They are families who have always managed, who contribute every day, and who are now finding that the margin they once relied on has disappeared.
Winter can often be the point where things tip. It is rarely one big event, but the steady build-up of power bills, rent, mortgages, petrol, and food costs until something must give. And as temperatures drop and the inversion settles in, many are quietly asking the same question: “How will we keep our home warm?”
Cold homes affect far more than comfort. They impact health, wellbeing, the ability for adults to keep working, and for children to attend school ready to learn.
At Community Link, we are already seeing demand increasing significantly.
The Cold Kids campaign enables us to provide practical, immediate help such as firewood and heating support, things that make a real and immediate difference.
We are also working to bring support closer, including a pop-up Foodbank in Hāwea over the winter months.
We are now halfway into the campaign, and thanks to the incredible generosity of our community so far, we have made a strong start. However, there is still more to do, and we need to raise a further $40,000 before winter fully sets in to meet the growing need.
