REPAIR REVOLUTION BRINGING BELONGINGS BACK TO LIFE Free repair event this Sunday

Wānaka locals are invited to bring their wellloved belongings back to life at Wastebusters’ free Repair Revolution event this Sunday. Taking place at the Wānaka Community Workshop at 15 Gordon Road, from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Sunday, 30 August, the event will bring together skilled local volunteers who are generously sharing their time and knowledge to help keep useful items in use for longer. People can bring along one item in need of some care, including bikes, small electrical items, clothing, homewares and more. The team will do its best to help, with repairs depending on the skills, tools and time available on the day. Visitors will sit alongside their repairer, discover

how to fix their belongings, and hopefully leave with a useful new skill. Event organiser Abi Hurford Abel said Repair Revolution events are as much about bringing the community together as they are about fixing things. “These days are always so wholesome and easy-going. It’s wonderful to see people connecting, sharing knowledge and working together to give good items a longer life,” she said.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS All aboard for Cam: Fundraising cruise and dinner Cruise for Cam, a fundraising cruise and dinner on Lake Whakatipu, will take place on September 5, World Spinal Cord Injury Day, to support Wānaka's Cam Mitchell as he continues his recovery from a life-changing injury. Cam (32) was injured in a motorbike accident in the Cardrona Valley in February, breaking his back at the T6 vertebra and leaving him paralysed. He spent four months at Christchurch's Burwood Spinal Unit, learning how to live in a paralysed body and adjusting to life in a wheelchair, before returning home last month. His recovery is not yet complete. Cam has been accepted into Making Strides, a specialist spinal cord rehabilitation centre in Australia offering expertise not currently available in New Zealand. As the treatment is overseas, it falls outside ACC cover, leaving Cam and his partner Merryn to raise $150,000 to fund the programme themselves. Cam recently spent a trial period at the centre. Within days, the results were clear, giving him real confidence in what six months there could achieve.

Cruise for Cam will raise money to get Cam back to the centre for at least six months. Guests will board at Steamer Wharf for a cruise on the historic TSS Earnslaw and a gourmet BBQ dinner at Walter Peak Homestead, with entertainment on the night. Auction items donated by businesses including Glenorchy Air, Altitude Tours, Wanaka River Journeys, Queenstown Watersports and Hanmer Springs Resort & Spa will also be up for grabs, with further donations welcome. Thanks to RealNZ for supporting this event. Tickets are available now, with all proceeds going directly towards Cam's rehabilitation. Submitted by Merryn and Cam

Wheels to Dunstan: Connecting people to care

The Wanaka Family Store is seeking donations of quality clothing and homewares to help support local families.

For many Upper Clutha residents, a Dunedin hospital appointment starts long before they reach the hospital doors. Often, it begins at 6.30am with an early morning pickup and a ride with the volunteer-run Wheels to Dunstan service.

Community members are encouraged to have a look through their wardrobes and homes for items they no longer need. Clothing for all ages, along with suitable household goods and homewares, can make a real difference to others in the community. Donations can be dropped off at the Wanaka Family Store, located at Unit 4, 10–12 Umbers Street, Three Parks, Wānaka. If you have furniture you would like to donate, please call 03 443 5068 to arrange a collection. The Wanaka Family Store thanks the community for its ongoing generosity and support. Wheels to Dunstan is a volunteer service helping people access specialist healthcare services in Cromwell, Dunstan and Alexandra. Passengers travelling to Dunedin or Mercy Hospital can connect with the St John Health Shuttle in Cromwell.

World Lake Day: Celebrating and caring for local lakes

Now in only its second year, World Lake Day raises global awareness of the importance of lakes and the need to protect and conserve them. Thursday, 27 August, WAI Wānaka will mark the occasion with a community beach clean-up at Penrith Park, inviting locals and visitors to celebrate the lake that sits at the heart of our community. Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea support recreation, wildlife, cultural connections, tourism, and our wellbeing. While we're fortunate to enjoy two of New Zealand's most spectacular freshwater environments, protecting it requires ongoing care and collective action. World Lake Day also falls within World Water Week, which this year is focused on the theme Water for People and Progress. The theme highlights the essential role

water plays in sustaining healthy communities, thriving ecosystems, and a resilient future. The community clean-up is an opportunity to spend time outdoors, connect with others, and make a practical difference by helping remove litter from the lakeshore. Whether you join us at Beacon Point, learn more about freshwater health, or simply take a moment to appreciate these lakes, every action helps protect the waterways that connect us all. World Lake Day is a reminder that caring for Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea starts with small actions, taken together.

Each month, Wānaka’s songwriters, poets, comedians, and storytellers gather at Rhyme x Reason Brewery for Creative Juices, an open mic night dedicated to original works. Running for over six years, this monthly event pairs an eclectic lineup of local talent with a loyal, packed audience. Kept alive by poet Zoe Hawkins alongside musicians Jacob Smith and Alan Matheson, Creative Juices provides one of the warmest stages for local creatives and a captivating

show for observers. In addition to its home base, the event recently took over the reopened upstairs restaurant and bar of Hāwea Store and Kitchen. Whether you are stepping up to the mic or grabbing a drink to watch, be sure to claim your seat early. Creative Juices takes place every third Sunday of the month at Rhyme x Reason at 6.00pm. ON MONDAY, 17 AUGUST Police arrested a female allegedly responsible for a retail theft spree spanning both the North and South Islands. Police located and arrested the woman following investigations into a series of shoplifting incidents dating back to 1 May 2026 in Tauranga and more recently in Wānaka. It is alleged the offender targeted a number of retail businesses and stole a range of items including personal care products, outdoor equipment, camping gear, hardware, and homeware items. To date, the woman has been charged with eight theft offences. The current value of the allegedly stolen property is estimated to be $4,500. Enquiries are ongoing and Police expect further charges to be laid. POLICE RESPONDED TO reports of an altercation between two males outside an address on Burdon Loop, Lake Hāwea on 15 August. A male was arrested and removed from the address. POLICE RESPONDED TO A FAMILY HARM incident on 15 August. A 50-yearold male was issued with a Police Safety Order (PSO). POLICE CONTINUE TO RECEIVE REPORTS of increasingly sophisticated online scams. Offenders are using a variety of platforms, including telephone calls, websites, social media, and messaging applications such as WhatsApp, to impersonate trusted organisations and gain access to personal information, banking details, and online accounts. General scam prevention and reporting advice is available through Netsafe. netsafe.org.nz/scams ON 15 AUGUST, an 18-year-old female driver was stopped on Anderson Road and returned a result of 236 mcg /L. She was in breach of the zeroalcohol requirements for young drivers and issued with an Infringement Offence Notice. A 20-year-old male driver was stopped at a breath testing checkpoint in Wānaka. Officers detected a strong smell of cannabis. The driver was required to undergo an Oral Fluid Test (OFT). The test did not provide a sufficient result in accordance with roadside drug-driving procedures. On the same day, a 34-year-old female driver was stopped on the WānakaLuggate Highway. The driver returned a result of 490 mcg/L. She is scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court. ON FRIDAY, 14 AUGUST, POLICE STOPPED a 34-year-old male driver on Ardmore Street. The driver returned a result of 569 mcg/L. He has been charged with excess breath alcohol and will appear in court. POLICE WERE RECEIVED a report of dangerous driving at Cardrona Ski Area, with concerns that the driver may have been impaired. Police located the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who underwent breath alcohol testing. While the driver was not charged with an alcohol offence, Police identified concerns regarding the driver’s fitness to continue driving and issued a Roadside Safety Directive. ON 13 AUGUST, POLICE STOPPED A 27-YEAR-OLD MALE driver on the Wānaka-Luggate Highway. The driver consented to providing a blood sample for analysis. Police issued a Roadside Safety Directive, prohibiting him from driving for a prescribed period. Police are awaiting the results of the blood analysis to determine what charges will be filed. POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT of an alleged assault arising from a road rage incident in the Cinema Paradiso carpark on 13 August. Police have identified a vehicle registration associated with the alleged offender and are making enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. POLICE RESPONDED TO A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION on Brownston Street, Wānaka on 13 August. Following enquiries, the driver deemed responsible for the incident was issued with an Infringement Offence Notice. POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT OF DANGEROUS DRIVING on the WānakaLuggate Highway on 12 August. It is alleged that a driver attempted to overtake a truck but ran out of room, forcing an oncoming vehicle off the road in order to avoid a collision. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. A witness was able to provide dashcam footage, which is assisting Police with their enquiries. Investigations are ongoing. NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY.
