The Lindis Pass Conservation Group Inc.
The Lindis Pass Conservation Group has been working in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve since 2004.
We are local volunteers who have a partnership agreement with the Department of Conservation to care for the Reserve through exotic weed control, collecting roadside rubbish, and most recently by trialling the re-planting of snow tussock in areas where it has been lost. We hope that these plants will provide an additional seed bank to speed up natural recovery of areas denuded by previous burning, grazing and invasive Hieracium. The results of the Group’s work can be seen. As you drive through the vistas that are so famous in landscape photography, you will see that infestations of brier, broom and lupin amongst the tussocks are now almost absent on the Pass. Cromwell, Chionochloa rigida snow-tussock seed gathered from the pass has been germinated, grown over three years and replanted on a variety of sites. To trial a different method, Wanaka’s Te Kakano Nursery grew tussocks for us from split-up mature plants. We are delighted to find that the tussocks have grown well. Encouraged by this, ECAN is funding the Group to grow 2,000 tussocks for planting into the Reserve over the next 2-4 years.

The work of planting, weeding and rubbish gathering is ongoing. We meet five or six times each summer to spend a convivial day in a stunning and inspiring landscape.
