A new initiative from WAI Wānaka is set to support the next generation of freshwater leaders, with the launch of its Studentships Programme.
Developed in partnership with the University of Otago - Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka and Lincoln University – Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki, the programme will fund paid summer internships and postgraduate research focused on real-world freshwater challenges in Otago. The studentships aim to bridge the gap between academic study and community action, enabling students to directly contribute to projects that support the health of local lakes, rivers and catchments. From fieldwork and monitoring to data analysis and community engagement, students will play an active role in delivering practical solutions.
While the first studentships will be awarded in 2026, WAI Wānaka and its university partners share a vision
to build a lasting programme that supports students year after year. Growing a dedicated fund over time, will create ongoing opportunities for emerging freshwater scientists and researchers.
WAI Wānaka says the programme reflects a growing need to invest in both science and people to protect freshwater for future generations.
Community support will be key to the programme’s success, with donations helping to fund scholarships and research costs.
By connecting students, researchers and the local community, the initiative is designed to strengthen freshwater ecosystems while building skills, knowledge and leadership.
More information, including how to support the programme, is available at: waiwanaka.nz/2026student-scholarship-programme

Help Count Bullock Creek's Backyard Birds
Friends of Bullock Creek & Southern Lakes Sanctuary are inviting the Wānaka community to take part in a bird watch and bird count at Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs this winter.
After more than 10 years of wetland restoration and native planting, FOBC is keen to learn more about how native and introduced birds are using the site. Community members can help identify
and record bird species while enjoying one of Wānaka's unique natural spaces.
The bird counts will be held on Tuesday, 30 June and Sunday, 5 July, from 12.00 - 10.00pm, at Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs, 107 Stone Street. Participants will learn simple bird identification techniques from experienced guides Paul van
Klink (FOBC Restoration Lead) and Jo Tilson (Southern Lakes Sanctuary) and contribute to local conservation efforts. This is a family friendly activity and there will also be a free mug of hot soup for all attendees.
No birdwatching experience is required, and beginners are warmly welcome. Even 30 minutes of participation can provide valuable information. Please bring warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and binoculars if you have them.
Registration is essential, as numbers are limited for each session. To secure your place, please email admin@fobc.kiwi
Come along, meet fellow nature enthusiasts, and help build a picture of the birdlife returning to Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs.

Mahjong tournament to raise funds for Croquet Club
Wanaka Croquet Club is the venue for a Mahjong Tournament on Sunday, 28 June. Play starts at 10.00am and finishes at 2.30pm.
The entry fee of $20 will all go to the Wanaka Croquet Club. This includes a delicious lunch, tea and coffee. Sharen’s famous scones will be served.
The Croquet Club grounds take a lot of money and time to keep in the best condition. Unlike many sports, croquet can be enjoyed by all ages and can be played for fun or competitively. Men and women, young and old can play together. It helps keep the brain active well into later life. Croquet is best described as 'outdoor chess' - it challenges you to plan moves, anticipate opponents moves and think creatively. Gentle exercise without being too demanding on the joints. New members are
always welcome, and the new season starts in early September.
Anyone looking to hold an event is welcome to call and organise a fun time for staff and friends. For a pre-Christmas event, it is advisable to book early.
To book a place for the Mahjong Tournament, please phone Sue 0210 2564 815.

Free WānaSoup Tuesdays make a welcome winter return
Wānaka locals and visitors alike are invited to share in a simple Community Link tradition as Free WānaSoup Tuesdays return next week for winter at the Wānaka Community Hub.
Running every Tuesday from 12.00 - 1.30pm, from 30 June until the end of August, WānaSoup offers a warm cup of soup and an open invitation to connect. Last year, numbers steadily grew as people embraced the chance to meet others in a relaxed setting.
“This is really about bringing people together,” says Kenzie, Community Link Project Coordinator and WānaSoup organiser. “We’ve seen locals, newcomers, and even travellers drop in for a quick chat and a bite to eat.”
An enthusiastic team of volunteers, many returning from last year, will prepare a different
soup each week and be on hand to welcome everyone.
New this year is a casual chess corner, following requests from regulars. Several chess sets will be available for those keen to play a game or learn the basics while enjoying their soup.
Organisers are hoping for a strong turnout at the Hub from next Tuesday’s launch.
“Pop in, say hello, and be part of it.”

Wastebusters’ free repair event returns this Sunday
Wastebusters’ Repair Revolution is back this Sunday, 28 June, from 10.00am - 2.00pm at the Wānaka Community Workshop, inviting locals to bring along well-loved items in need of repair and get free advice from skilled volunteers.
The event follows National Volunteer Week, making it a fitting opportunity to celebrate the people who generously donate their time and expertise to support the community.
“Repair Revolution wouldn’t be possible without our incredible volunteers,” says event organiser Veronica Farmosa-Hamilton. “They share their time and knowledge so generously, and it’s amazing to see the difference they make.”
Over the past year, volunteers have helped bring more than 300 items back to life at
Repair Revolution events across Wānaka and Queenstown.
With a wide range of skills on offer, attendees can bring along clothing, laptops, small electronics, bikes, homewares and more.
The event operates as a drop-in day, with no booking required. Attendees are asked to bring one item each. Repairs are free, although koha is always appreciated.
Whether it’s a favourite jacket, a laptop that’s stopped working or a household item that’s been sitting in the ‘I’ll fix it one day’ pile, everyone is welcome.
For more information, or to sign up as a volunteer, visit wastebusters.co.nz/events.
