It’s nearly time once again for the traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations on the lakefront – all free to enjoy! Organised by Queenstown Lakes District Council on behalf of locals and visitors, things kick off at 2.00pm with family-friendly entertainment down at the Dinosaur Park including roaming entertainers, face painting, a bouncy castle and fun games. Two great bands, Superficial and Wānaka Project, take to the stage in the spectator-only Ardmore Street layby from 8.00-10.45pm. Then headliners The Mandates get everyone pumped for a spectacular fireworks display at midnight before finishing their set at 1.00am.

A separate dance stage features Red Frogs DJs followed by DJ Jordi either side of the fireworks.

Don’t fancy the crowds? Why not grab a blanket and watch the fireworks from Lismore Park. As in previous years, there’ll be safe zones in town from 29 December through to the main event thanks to the awesome Red Frogs volunteers. And don’t forget that Wānaka’s CBD is alcohol-free round-the-clock from 6.00am Christmas Day until 6.00am on 6 January. QLDC would like to thank local suppliers, security and traffic management contractors, emergency services and Red Frogs NZ for helping stage this awesome event.

Mint Charitable Trust has grown (a wonderful problem to have!) and we’re now looking for a temporary home for the next 18 months while we work toward a bigger, long-term vision. We’re open to creative local solutions — a house, large office, shared or co-working space, or something we haven’t thought of yet. Ideally, we’re seeking a ground-level space of around 70–100 square metres, located near Three Parks, Gordon Road or Wānaka township. Our hope is to create a warm, welcoming hub where the Mint community can co-work, run programmes and social activities, collaborate with others, and connect with volunteers. Most importantly, it’s a place where we can keep delivering meaningful opportunities while we plan for the future. If you know of a local space that could work — even if it’s a little outside the box — we’d love to hear from you. Please contact charlotte.jackson@minttrust.nz

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wānaka History celebrates a year of growth

2025 has been a busy year for Wānaka History! In January we launched our new website, featuring a timeline and countless stories, biographies, and historic images. We launched audio stories in October, and you can now listen to over 100 clips of interviews discussing our region’s history. We have been working to install plaques as physical markers of important historical sites across the district. You can find these at the Wānaka Hotel, Queensberry Inn, St Columba’s Church, the original Police Precinct at Bella Vista Motel, and the White Star Garage, White Star Hotel, and Olympic Hall sites on Ardmore Street. All our achievements this year are possible because of the dedicated volunteers of the Upper Clutha History Society, our generous members and our funders, Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Graham & Olive West Trust, and Wānaka Masonic Lodge. New members are welcome and encouraged to participate through the Wānaka History website. The website also allows individuals to register for the quarterly Upper Clutha History Society Newsletter – ‘Those Were the Days’.
