JOHN RAE’S CELTIC ROOTS A SPECIAL EVENING OF JAZZ

Presented by Wanaka Concert Society and Chamber Music NZ Wānaka Concert Society and Chamber Music NZ present award-winning Scottish drummer and composer John Rae for an evening of jazz inspired by his Celtic heritage. Rae brings together the music of his Scottish heritage with contemporary jazz, including acoustic renditions of traditional pieces such as Robert Burns’ Banks and Braes, which was named “track of the year” by RNZ Concert’s Nick Tipping. The programme will also feature original compositions by Rae. Joining on the night are saxophonist Oscar Lavën, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and bandleader; celebrated pianist and composer Ben Wilcock; and rising New Zealand jazz star Jack Harris on bass. Together, the quartet will explore the meeting

point between Scottish musical traditions and the energy of the New York jazz scene, offering audiences an evening that moves between familiar melodies and contemporary improvisation. Free community arts nights coming to Wānaka

Warm up to Wao Summit with seven days of film

Wānaka film lovers will have the chance to explore some of the big ideas shaping our future when Warm Up to Wao takes over Cinema Paradiso from 19–25 October. Te Atamira’s popular Community Nights programme, established in Queenstown over the past three years, is now coming to Wānaka, with free monthly events offering locals the chance to get creative, try something new and connect. Each Community Arts Night will explore a different creative theme, led by a local artist sharing their skill, knowledge and passion. Te Atamira Director Ruth Heath, herself a Hāwea resident, is excited to bring this popular programme to her own community and create more opportunities for people across the district to enjoy the arts. “I saw an opportunity to bring this to Wānaka too, showcasing and sharing the creative talents within

our own community,” says Ruth. Community Arts Nights are relaxed and welcoming, with no experience required, and drop-ins are welcome. The first event, Exploring the Nature of Indian Ink, with local artist Merle Sea, takes place Tuesday, 29 September, 6.30pm – 8.00pm at Wānaka Community Hub. Participants will explore different ways to work with Indian ink, in a relaxed and playful session. Future Community Arts Nights will explore themes including singing and drawing, with events planned for the fourth Tuesday of every month and is supported by the Central Lakes Trust.

Held in the lead-up to Wao Summit 2026, the week-long mini film festival brings together seven highly acclaimed climate and environmental films spanning regenerative farming, nature restoration, community resilience, activism, truth, economics and the voices of the next generation. The programme includes Common Wealth, Rachel’s Farm, Orwell: 2+2=5,

Silent Friend, The Giants, Future Council and Wilding - with one film screening each day. Together, the films offer very different perspectives on the challenges we face and the possibilities for creating a more resilient future. The collaboration with Cinema Paradiso extends the Summit conversation beyond talks and workshops, using storytelling and cinema to open up new ways of thinking about our relationship with people, place and planet.

WHAT: Warm Up to Wao mini film festival. WHEN: Monday, 19 October 19, to Sunday, 25 October. WHERE: Cinema Paradiso. INFO: To secure your tickets, book directly with Cinema Paradiso: paradiso.nz

CRIME LINE

C r i me Li n e b ro ug h t to y o u b y New Wo rl d Th ree Pa r k s

POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING a reported assault that occurred on Muir Road, Hawea on 12 September involving two members of the public walking their dog. Enquiries are ongoing. POLICE HAVE CHARGED a 32-year-old man following a disorder incident at a retail premises in Wānaka on Saturday. At around 11.05pm on 12 September, a male entered a store on Ardmore Street and became verbally abusive towards staff. The male has been charged with disorderly behaviour and resisting Police. He is scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court on 2 October 2026. POLICE ARE REMINDING THE PUBLIC to remain vigilant following ongoing reports of online and social media scams. In one incident, a victim received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the BNZ Fraud Squad. The caller attempted to convince the victim they were dealing with a legitimate banking fraud matter. Police are urging the public to be cautious of unsolicited calls from anyone claiming to represent a bank or financial institution and requesting personal or banking information. IN A SEPARATE SCAM, a victim reported losing money after attempting to purchase tickets through Facebook Marketplace. Police encourage anyone buying goods or services online to exercise caution, particularly when dealing with private sellers on social media platforms. Be wary of requests for direct bank transfers, avoid purchasing from newly created or suspicious profiles, and independently verify the legitimacy of sellers before making payment. If you receive an unexpected call claiming to be from your bank, hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted phone number. If you believe you have fallen victim to a scam, contact your bank immediately and report the matter to Police via 105. Anyone with information relating to scam activity is encouraged to report it through netsafe.org.nz

POLICE ARE ENCOURAGING anyone planning to head into the high country around Wānaka and the wider Southern Lakes region to carefully assess conditions and ensure they are well prepared before setting out. As daylight hours increase and temperatures begin to warm, outdoor activity across the region is expected to increase. Police remind recreational users that weather conditions in alpine and remote environments can change quickly. POLICE ALSO ENCOURAGE outdoor enthusiasts to utilise information available through the Department of Conservation, MetService, and other reputable forecasting services when planning trips into remote areas. WHILE OUTDOOR RECREATION is a valued part of life in the Southern Lakes, avoidable incidents can place both those requiring assistance and rescue personnel at significant risk. Thorough preparation, careful planning, and conservative decision-making remain the best ways to stay safe outdoors. WITH SNOW STILL PRESENT IN MANY ALPINE AREAS, Police are also reminding backcountry users to remain aware of avalanche risks. The New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA) provides daily avalanche forecasts, mountain weather updates, and safety information for the Wānaka, Queenstown, and Mt Aspiring regions. Anyone planning a backcountry trip should check the relevant forecasts before departure, carry appropriate avalanche and emergency equipment, and ensure they have the necessary skills and experience for the terrain they intend to travel through. Cold Kids CampaignAnother Remarkable Community Response

Pictured: Cold Kids Supporters get together held at Paddons Paddock last week.

As winter comes to an end, we’re reflecting on the impact of this year’s Cold Kids Campaign and the difference it has made for local families.

22 HELWICK STREET, WANAKA | CORNERSTORESUPPLIES.CO.NZ

Instant Havens, Start Here

Since May, Community Link’s Wellbeing Connectors have worked alongside 189 people, many of them more than once, helping families, parents, caregivers and young people facing significant hardship. The people reaching out for support come from all walks of life. Many have built successful careers, run businesses, raised families and contributed greatly to our community. Yet illness, injury, relationship breakdowns, caring responsibilities and the rising cost of living can gradually erode even the strongest foundations. This winter, one of the most common challenges has been keeping homes warm.

While many people in our district live in warm, modern homes, others are living in cold, damp rentals with limited heating. We’ve supported local families with heating costs, electricity bills and firewood while hearing stories of people carefully rationing heat, limiting travel to save fuel and doing whatever they could to get through the colder months. Some families told us they were collecting branches from the roadside to supplement their firewood supply, while others were carefully weighing up whether they could afford to turn on a heat pump or make an extra trip into town. These are the kinds of decisions many local households have faced this winter. The response from the Upper Clutha community has been remarkable.

Since April, the Cold Kids Campaign has raised more than $120,000, allowing practical support to reach local people when they needed it most. Businesses across the district backed the campaign through donation matching, fundraising initiatives and in-store promotions that helped provide pyjamas, blankets, hot water bottles and other winter essentials.

The campaign was strengthened through partnerships with the Hāwea Community Association, Lions members who cut and delivered firewood, and the Cucumber Sandwich Club, whose members continue to support local wellbeing initiatives.

Mature, established hedging - in before Christmas!

Our spring planting stock is selling fast - call or visit us to have hedging set aside for you.

Last Thursday evening, we had the opportunity to thank many of the donors, volunteers and supporters who made the campaign possible. What struck us most was not simply the generosity shown, but the genuine desire people have to see everyone in our community doing well.

The Cold Kids Campaign has helped hundreds of local people through a difficult winter. Just as importantly, it reminded us that those facing hardship know they are not facing it alone. Noho ora mai

Wanaka Ukulele Band looking for new members Got four strings and a love of music? The Wanaka Ukulele Band is looking for new members to join the group. We’re a friendly, incorporated society of local music lovers who gather once a week for a relaxed strum, a sing and a good laugh. You’ll also catch us performing at various local events around town throughout the year. We’re heading off to the Te Anau Ukulele Festival over the first weekend of October. When we return, we’ll be diving into a fresh set of new songs, making it an ideal time for newcomers to jump in and learn the new material together. We’re an amateur group with a strong focus on fun and community. Members don’t need to be professionals, but to jump right in, they should be able to hold a tune and strum along, knowing their basic chords, or bring complementary musical skills.

IN ROOM COPY

The band meets on Mondays from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Anyone interested can search for the Wanaka Ukulele Band on Facebook @wanakaukeleles, or call 0210 2417 219 for a chat.

If you’ve been thinking about getting into group music, come along and give it a go! Submitted by Vicky Hill
