Don’t miss The Pinnacle on Saturday, 8 August, at the Lake Wānaka Centre – an opportunity to hear the personal stories of world-class snow sports athletes who live and train in New Zealand while competing on the international stage.

“From Wānaka, New Zealand,” was heard so often in snow sports commentary this Northern Season. Our region was the talk of the snow sports world at X Games, World Cups, Snowleague, Natural Selection, World Champs and the Olympics. We even had two sets of local brothers competing in the Olympics, one set are twins.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott became the most decorated snowboarder in Olympic history with her record of five medals. Plus, she ruled Natural Selection. Mount Aspiring College student Luke Harrold won the overall Snowleague, Luca Harrington won his first Olympic medal, Ben Richards won the Freeride World Tour, and Fin Melville Ives had his best pipe results ever, winning the Overall World Crystal Globe, even though he fractured

his collarbone and suffered concussion in his Olympic qualifying run. These are just snippets of our success stories.Wānaka Snowsports Club alone had athletes represent 6 nations during this Northern Hemisphere season.

Dropping Inn’s sponsorship will enable Wanaka Snowsports Club’s celebration event, with organisational assistance from Cardrona-Treble Cone and Snow Sports New Zealand, to be accessible to all snow sports fans and families. Tickets are priced at $10 for people aged 13 and over, and free for children 12 and under.

Doors open at 5.45pm for an athlete red carpet event with a drink on arrival. A bar will be available and food will be served during the evening. A silent auction in the Armstrong room will raise funds for Wānaka Snowsports Club’s young athletes. Tickets can be purchased from wanakasnowsports.co.nz

MY COMMUNITY NEWS

The Wānaka Community Resilience Group needs you!

Did the recent shake make you wonder what you can do to prepare your household for the big one? We invite you to join the Wānaka Community Resilience Group, where passionate volunteers come together to plan for the inevitable emergency situations our region faces. Our training sessions are a great opportunity for everyone – regardless of background or experience – to listen in or contribute to creating a resilient Wānaka.

With a diverse team of volunteers, we aim to enhance our community’s preparedness for emergencies and provide direct communications from Emergency Management Otago.

In an emergency, our main functions will be checking neighbourhoods and setting up and operating a Community Emergency Hub for the

public to get updated information, share resources and request needs. There are many roles that will need to be lled, all by volunteers.

Keen to help during an emergency? We welcome you to attend any of our group training sessions. We know there will be lots of helping hands when it comes to supporting our community, so any information and procedures we can learn before an emergency will be very bene cial.

Let’s work together to strengthen our community to ensure a resilient, safer future for all.

Please get in touch with us to join our mailing list. Visit our Facebook page or email: wanakacrg@gmail.com

New online calendar for family events

for

Information was scattered across dozens of Facebook pages, websites, newsletters and word of mouth, and I found myself worrying that I was missing opportunities to connect with other families.

I created the Wānaka Bubs Calendar, a free online community calendar that brings local playgroups, library programmes, music sessions, walks, toy libraries, parent meetups, classes and family-friendly events together in one place.

Opening hours: MON 9.00am - 3.30pm TUE 9.00am - 3.30pm WED 9.00am - 2.00pm THU 9.00am - 2.00pm FRI 9.00am - 3.30pm

My hope is that it makes life a little easier for local families, while also giving community groups and local organisations a simple way to share their events with more parents.

The calendar is completely free to use, and anyone hosting a family-friendly event can submit it to be included. Visit the website: sites.google.com/view/wanakabubscalendar

Wānaka artist and traveller celebrates 100 years of curiosity and wonder

On July 21, Wānaka resident Ola Reeve will celebrate her 100th birthday, marking a century de ned by resilience, travel, creativity and an enduring sense of curiosity.

Born in Palmerston North in 1926, Ola's life journey has taken her around the world, from the Paci c Islands and Melanesia to more than 30 countries. A talented artist, her paintings can be found on walls throughout Wānaka, including at the Wānaka Community Hub, the library and St John rooms, as well as in places as far a eld as Scotland, Hong Kong and the Falkland Islands.

Ola credits two gifts from the angels for helping shape her remarkable life: curiosity and wonder. Those qualities have carried her through childhood abandonment, loss and extraordinary life experiences, helping her build lasting friendships and embrace opportunities wherever they appeared.

Known for her mischievous sense of humour and positive outlook, Ola remains keenly interested in the world. Her latest fascination? Quantum physics.

A committed royalist following her years working in the Colonial Service in Melanesia, Ola says one of the most exciting parts of turning 100 is receiving a birthday card from King Charles.

The milestone will be celebrated with friends at several gatherings in Wānaka, where Ola says she has found her true home among the mountains. Happy 100th birthday, Ola from all your friends, the team at Community Link and The Messenger.

Ola has had her life story written up by friend Lindsey Scho eld – a copy is available for a $10 donation to Community Link. Contact Lindsey: lindsey67@gmail.com.

Queer literature the focus of quarterly club

Queer Quarterly Reads is a book club featuring LGBTQIA+ themes, authors and books. Each event includes an open discussion of a chosen book in a safe and supportive environment at the Wānaka Library.

Queer Quarterly Reads book club will next meet on Wednesday, 13 August at 5.30pm to discuss Not That I’d Kiss a Girl by New Zealand author, Lil O’Brien.

Part memoir and part coming-of-age story, the book explores identity, friendship, mental health and sexuality with humour, honesty and heart. O’Brien shares her journey of self-discovery as a young queer woman, creating a story that is both deeply personal and widely relatable.

Queer Quarterly Reads’ mission is to promote queer literature while fostering a supportive atmosphere for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies. This session is for adults only, and bookings are required.

The event is free and copies of Not That I’d Kiss a Girl are available through the library catalogue.

Queer Quarterly Reads was established in 2024 and is supported by OUT&About Wānaka.

Every year, hundreds of people choose to make the Upper Clutha home, drawn here by the mountains, lakes and lifestyle. Yet while moving here can be exciting, finding a genuine sense of belonging often takes surprisingly much longer.

That’s why Community Link is hosting Welcoming Day on Wednesday, 29 July at the Wānaka Community Hub from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.

In the year to June alone, around 920 new residents arrived in the Upper Clutha, helping grow our population to more than 18,000 people. The Wānaka Ward grew from 4,460 residents in 2000 to more than 18,000 by the end of 2023, more than quadrupling in just over two decades. Little wonder we are one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing communities, we’re constantly welcoming new neighbours. But settling in isn’t always easy. Finding housing, navigating the cost of living, making new friends and building a network can be challenging, even in a place as friendly as ours. QLDC’s Welcoming Communities programme has identified connection and belonging as some of the key challenges newcomers face.

The free event brings together more than 20 local organisations, clubs and services, making it easy to discover what’s available, meet new people and find opportunities to get involved in community life.

Whether you’ve been here six weeks, six months or six years, Welcoming Day is a chance to turn a place you live into a place that feels like home. Everyone is welcome, come along and enjoy a free sausage sizzle, Mr Whippy ice cream and a welcome tote bag.

Welcoming Day is presented by Community Link in partnership with Queenstown Lakes District Libraries, Sport and Recreation Centre and QLDC Welcoming Communities.

CRIME LINE

POLICE ARE REMINDING THE PUBLIC TO BE VIGILANT about online scams, particularly through dating websites and social media platforms. Police have received two reports of dating app scams. Commonly known as romance scams. Romance scams occur when an offender creates a fake online identity and pretends to be interested in a romantic relationship to obtain money, personal information, or both.

TWO FOREIGN NATIONALS WERE ARRESTED, charged, and convicted this week in relation to a significant shoplifting operation targeting two local supermarkets. Between 6 June and 8 July 2026, a male and a female repeatedly stole grocery items from both stores, with the total value of the stolen goods exceeding $3,000. As a result of the investigation, the offenders faced a combined total of 43 charges. Their offending demonstrates the significant impact that repeat retail theft has on local businesses and the wider community. Police remain committed to holding repeat offenders accountable and acknowledge the assistance provided by retail staff in identifying and reporting this offending.

POLICE STOPPED A 50-YEAR-OLD FEMALE driving on Ardmore Street on 12 July. She underwent evidential breath-testing procedures and returned a result of 1,075 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, more than twice the legal limit.

POLICE STOPPED A 43-YEAR-OLD FEMALE driving on Little Maude Drive, Lake Hāwea, On 11 July. She underwent breath-testing procedures and returned a result of 552 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

A VEHICLE COLLISION WAS WITNESSED by police while standing at a road snow chain enforcement checkpoint on the Crown Range Road on 8 July. At the time of the crash it was snowing heavily. A vehicle was stationary in the queue at the checkpoint waiting to be let up the road. A second vehicle drove around the corner and lost traction on the snow. A vehicle slid off the road and narrowly missed a worker who was controlling the checkpoint and the other vehicle became stuck in the snow on the side of the road.

A BUS ENCOUNTERED SLICK BLACK ICE on the downhill portion of Crown Range Road on Sunday, 12 July. Police are aware of a separate bus which encountered some issues and became stuck in the same location.

POLICE HAVE BEEN CONTACTED by one of our local ski resorts reporting dangerous and careless driving on the ski field access road. Driving on mountain roads can be challenging, especially in adverse weather conditions. Our local ski fields are notoriously steep, narrow, and unsealed, requiring specific driving techniques to navigate safely. The examples given were speeding, overtaking, failing to carry or fit snow chains. Police remind people that any vehicle related accident or incident on the access roads invite police to thoroughly examine the circumstances which could result in traffic offending and charges.

AS SCHOOL BALL SEASON APPROACHES, New Zealand Police are reminding parents and young people that after-parties should be safe, well supervised, and responsibly managed. While Police want everyone to enjoy the celebrations, alcohol can increase the risk of harm if appropriate planning and supervision are not in place. Police and Hato Hone St John may need to intervene if an event becomes unsafe or results in alcoholrelated incidents. Parents, hosts, and organisers all have a responsibility to provide a safe environment and understand their legal obligations. Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, supplying alcohol to anyone under 18 is an offence unless a legal exception applies. Parents remain responsible for decisions about their child’s alcohol consumption and should ensure any event involving alcohol is supervised, safe, and promotes responsible behaviour.

POLICE NON-EMERGENCY | NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (Ten-Five) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (Triple-One).

For Wanaka’s tiny dogs & the people who love them,

So me dogs move through the world with a softness of their own. They need gentleness, quiet and a familiar, consistent kind of care.

They’re the ones who don’t flourish alongside the bigger boys or in large groups. They don’t settle well with new and unfamiliar people in their home nor in kennels.

For these little ones, we created something small, calm and beautifully intentional.

We’re holding a small reserve list for when doors open again. Apply: wldc@tuta.io
